GIVE YOUR CHILD A HEAD START If your child is doing exams this year (SATs in Year 6 or GCSEs in Years 10 and 11) then preparation is the key to success. Weak areas need to be highlighted as early as possible. For example GCSE module exams are in November and January, so not long to prepare. Also, some schools start GCSEs in Year 9. Interested parents will know that Entrance Exams for Grammar Schools are in September 2012 (at the start of Year 6). So Year 5 students should start to prepare for these exams now. Verbal and non-verbal

reasoning are not easy to master and require a decent amount of effort. The first couple of months of the new school year are of prime importance. This is the start of a new adventure for children and it comes with its own challenges. How well students settle in the first term will probably determine how well they will do in the rest of the year. If your child is below average then it is likely they need some extra support. A child is like a jigsaw puzzle with a few bits missing. If you can get those bits filled in they are likely to flow nicely and achieve their potential.

barnoldswicknews The Switch On!!! Thousands of people turned out for Barnoldswick’s spectacular Christmas Light’s switch on Saturday the 12th November, with hundreds participating in a carnival band led magical parade around the town centre carrying massive lanterns or illuminated swords and wands made during the event. Earlier in the day, over 40 local singers entertained the crowds from the town square music stage. Coates Lane School Choir, conducted by Helen Millington, thrilled the audience with their enthusiastic voices. Solo acoustic acts Tom Richardson, Tom Scothern and Dan Thomas played outstanding sets during the afternoon and local band Queen and Country were joined by 12 year old Ellie Schofield performing only her second public Ellie Sch appearance. ofield Visiting bands The Dunwells and Big J and the Piccolo Chickens brought five hours of live music to a crescendo for the switch on itself. Meanwhile, Santa was busy in his grotto seeing over 400 children during the afternoon. Youngsters were also treated to free donkey rides on Albert Road and a hands-on workshop at the Rainhall Centre produced hundreds of light up swords and wands for the parade. Several town councillors and volunteers dressed in fairytale costumes provided by Northern Costume Hire. Lots of families followed the fairytale trail to judge artwork displayed throughout the town centre. 8

Vice Chairman of Barnoldswick Town Council, Councillor Lindsay Gaskell, said, “I’m delighted that so many people The Switc h On Par came from far ade and wide for the Switch On event. I’d like to thank the hundreds of children and their families who helped create the stunning lanterns and illuminations for the parade. The atmosphere was fantastic! The parade was at least four times bigger than anything we’ve done before – next year we’ll need extra musicians in the procession. Thank you to everyone who helped to make it such a success!” Barnoldswick’s seasonal events continue with the Fairytale Art Trail, judging will be taking place until 27th November and The Christmas Windows event in the town will be launched on Saturday 3rd of December together with an Advent Hunt around the town.

Proud to be Pendle? If you are then let the Boundary Commission know. Many of you will have heard the news that the Boundary Commission has come up with plans to abolish the Pendle Parliamentary Constituency. The initial plans look to hive off Barnoldswick and Earby into Ribble Valley (meaning West Craven’s MP would also represent part of Preston), and lump the rest of Pendle into a new Burnley North and Nelson constituency. In these tough economic times it’s only right that we should cut the cost of politics and reduce the number of MPs, we should also make sure the system is fair with each constituency having roughly the same number of electors; but these proposals are simply daft! Barnoldswick and the likes of Bamber Bridge have no obvious links and there is no need to split Pendle in two. At the last Pendle Borough Council meeting there was strong support for the view that all the 20 council wards of Pendle Council should be represented by the same MP, with areas being added on as necessary to bring the constituency up to size. So if you agree with me that Barnoldwick should remain part of Pendle you have until 5th December to let the Boundary commission know your views. You can write to the Boundary commission for England, 35 Great Smith Street, London SW1P 3BQ. Or you can email: northwest@bcommengland.x.gsi.gov.uk. Every letter or email will be vital in getting the Boundary Commission to change their minds.

SPICE UP YOUR LIFE!
At Chilli Peppers Restaurant & Takeaway People flock from all over the country to eat at Chilli Pepper and it is easy to see why with excellent food complimented by friendly and courteous staff. We spoke to a couple from Nelson who said they travel over each week usually to enjoy the buffet, which is £9.50 on a Wednesday and Sunday. They said it was the ‘wonderful food and service’ that kept them coming back. Manager Mr Asu Miah said emphasis was placed not only on the food but the customer service and cleanliness and that had helped the restaurant scoop numerous prestigious awards including the ‘International Cuisine Award for Outstanding Food and Customer Service, ‘The British Culinary Award’ for the Best Hundred Restaurants in 2005 and the customer excellence award in 2007 and 2008. Even celebrity Jimmy Saville was counted as a fan of the restaurant.
If you love Indian Cuisine then we have no doubt you will love Chilli Pepper.

Matt’s Unbelievably Easy Mince Pies Ingredients (makes 18 pies) 225g 350g 100g 280g
Cold Butter - Diced Plain Flour Golden Caster Sugar Good Quality Mincemeat (I like mine with added Brandy!) 1 Small Egg - Beaten Icing Sugar - To Dust
1) To make the pastry, rub the butter into the flour, then mix in the sugar and a pinch of salt. Combine the pastry into a ball - don’t add liquid - and knead it briefly. The dough will be fairly firm, like shortbread dough. You can use the dough immediately, or chill for later. 2) Preheat the oven to 200C/gas 6/fan 180C. Line 18 holes of two 12-hole patty tins, by pressing small walnut-sized balls of pastry into each hole. Spoon the mincemeat into the pies. 3) Take slightly smaller balls of pastry than before and pat them out between your hands to make round lids, big enough to cover the pies. Top the pies with their lids, pressing the edges gently together to seal - you don’t need to seal them with milk or egg as they will stick on their own. (The pies may now be frozen for up to 1 month). 4) Brush the tops of the pies with the beaten egg. Bake for 20 minutes until golden. Leave to cool for 5 minutes, then remove to a wire rack. To serve, lightly dust with icing sugar.
