“Industry is one of the best events that has ever been introduced in NZ as it gives all hairdressers an opportunity to get recognised no matter what product company your salon is associated with. It is always great to be recognised in any competition that you enter. It was really nice to win this competition as I have been working on critiquing my men’s hairstyling for some time. I really enjoy the tailoring you can achieve with men’s hair and consider it one of the hardest haircuts to do”. Brad Lepper, French Revolver Studio Brad Lepper, Mens Hairdresser of the Year

Shar Sutherland Todd, Educator of the Year

“Being awarded the title of 2014 New Zealand Educator of the Year is a massive career highlight. After thirteen years as a guest artist and currently the longest standing member of the Wella NZ Creative Team. I can now further promote what I believe is the best hair colour in the world. It is my absolute privilege to be educating the next generation of hairdressers in New Zealand because the future of our industry tomorrow is built from the strength of our education today. My wish is to inspire those I teach to believe that with passion and a strong vision, anything is possible. Our fabulous team here at Sutherland Todd are my second family and we are all totally buzzing right now. Above all, I could not have won this award without my husband Ash, who is my rock!! We have four gorgeous boys and together we are constantly reminded that dreams really do come true!” Shar Sutherland Todd, Sutherland Todd Hairdressing

“With 2014 being the third year for Industry, it was at a point were we needed to see true engagement from the hairdressing industry for both the education and the awards. The entries for the awards were phenomenal, the standard of the photographic work was on another level from the year previous, which showed me that people were taking it very seriously and were entering to win. That was exciting for me, as that was the entire reasoning behind setting them up, was to see growth in our photographic work and for salons to have something to market in their regions. The education this year was insane! We had over 280 people through every seminar and the presentations from Sebastian, Joico, fudge and ghd were amazing. It was great to see the companies using a wide array of stylists from around the country especially the younger artists and supporting their work. This was the motivation behind starting Industry in the first place, having a platform for all hairdressers and having an event that brings EVERYONE together to celebrate the talent we have here in NZ.” Sara Allsop, Industry

One night in Bangkok!

Thailand is renowned as an international vacation destination but for kiwi stylists Adrian Barclay and Rebecca Brent their recent whirlwind trip was more a busman’s holiday. The duo presented a live show in Bangkok that was attended by over 200 Thai stylists. L’Oréal Professionnel in Thailand was keen for the duo to showcase global trends and demonstrate the latest techniques popular on catwalks and in salons. In particular, local stylists were keen to learn how to work with the texture of traditional Thai hair to deliver the latest international looks. Workshops were designed to coach salon staff on the tools and techniques they need to meet the challenges posed by an expected influx of global products, because in 2015 a range of international salon brands will become available for the first time. Offshore travel is usually an opportunity for New Zealand stylists to further develop techniques and discover new trends to bring home. In this case, the roles were reversed with our leading stylists helping to educate and introduce new skills and techniques to fellow stylists in an emerging market. “It has to be one of the biggest highlights of my career. We are a global family at L’Oréal and it feels great being in the position to mentor others and give back to the industry,” Adrian said. Adrian and Rebecca conducted a look and learn session, teaching Thai stylists new and various cutting and colouring techniques. Adrian says the colour techniques were both creative and practical and he believes Thai hairdressers were greatly encouraged to adapt and improve their service. “It was very rewarding,” says Rebecca, owner of Wellington salon Willis York and L’Oréal Colour Trophy 2014 Supreme Award winner. “Every single person we worked with had a genuine craving to learn more – they were all grateful for the information and techniques we were passing on to them. “We believe we left the stylists with invaluable knowledge,” Rebecca says. “You could see they felt more confident to adapt and apply the colour techniques to develop their service and skills and to take those skills back to their salons.”

Mane in Wellington The first salon to adopt Bitcoin!

Mane Salon, a hair salon in Wellington, is now accepting the new virtual currency Bitcoin as a means of payment, becoming New Zealand’s first hair salon to do so. From today customers can use Bitcoin, just as they would if they were paying cash. ‘As soon as we started offering customers complementary Wi-Fi last year, we saw for ourselves how customers love using their smart devices while in the salon, and one of our customers showed us how she could use her Smartphone to make payments using Bitcoin - we were blown away how easy it was’ says Summer Bouzaid, Mane Salon’s manager. Mane Salon Owner Janine Weatherley rang her salon’s bank ANZ, to ask how Mane Salon could add Bitcoin to existing creditcard and EFTPOS payment arrangements. ‘Our account manager didn’t seem know what Bitcoin was - I was quite surprised so I got my husband who is an IT consultant to setup Bitcoin for us’ says Janine. Stylists have been trained on how to accept Bitcoins, and Bitcoin stickers with a QR code have been placed on stylist mirrors, on Mane’s website and around the counter area to encourage customers to pay via Bitcoin. Mane Salon chose to outsource the most critical component of the solution, the Bitcoin wallet to an external 3rd party, www. blockchain.info, which means Bitcoins are held in a secure location, away from the salon and point-of-sale PC. As soon as a customer pays an email arrives informing the receptionist that the transaction has been successful. This usually arrives within a few seconds of the payment being sent. ‘It’s so simple, we hope to be able to reduce our credit card processing fees and our dependence on the bank, as well as well as simplify cash handling – I really hope Bitcoin takes off and our adoption plays a small role in its success. Despite recent adverse publicity about Bitcoin we’re getting right behind this new payment method and we’ll be sharing our Bitcoin experience via our Facebook page to help other small businesses adopt it for themselves’ says Janine.

St Tropez shines at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Sydney! “This year we wanted to push the boundary more so than before, we wanted to create a world in which you could step into and experience the wonder of our never-ending summer” said Jeremy Somers owner of Australian swimwear brand ‘We Are Handsome’. “We’re always going for a natural, healthy and tanned look nothing too over the top - and St Tropez are the leaders in helping us get this look year, after year.” Michael Brown, St.Tropez Skin Finishing Expert explains how to achieve the best finish: 1. “It’s crucial to prep the skin, especially in a show like this - it’s swimwear - there is nothing to hide behind, so the skin needs to be perfect. The models have all been sent the ‘St.Tropez Tanning Commandments’ before the show, so today we just needed to use the St.Tropez Tan Enhancing Moisturiser on the dry areas of the body like the elbows, feet, hands and of course the knees. 2. St.Tropez is all about customising your colour and so the Instant Tan in Light/Medium and MediumDark are perfect for layering and tailoring shades. For the lighter models we used the Medium/Dark to bring up their overall colour, and for the girls and guys with a natural base colour and more olive tones we used the Light/Medium Instant Tan. 3. To even out the skin while adding a little extra warmth and healthy glow we finished with St.Tropez Illuminator in Gold. I used this to highlight, define and sculpt the bodies - following the lines of the muscles to create definition and shape. The show was outside so the Gold Illuminator also worked perfectly to catch the natural light, contouring the body, creating a beautiful sheen and a gorgeous, healthy glow.”

Lorde collaborates with M.A.C. cosmetics!

New Zealand recording artist Lorde and makeup brand M.A.C. Cosmetics are collaborating on a limited-edition makeup collection due to be released this winter. Famously renowned for her sultry, deep purple lip hues, clear complexion, and lashings of mascara and eyeliner, the 17-year-old singer works frequently with M.A.C. senior artist Amber Dreadon on creating her looks for events and tours. “I have loved M.A.C. Cosmetics since I was a little kid,” said Lorde. “I remember saving up to buy my very first M.A.C. lipstick at 14, and it was used by about 20 of my friends! M.A.C. has a very clear aesthetic, that has always felt fashion forward to me. So I was really excited to work with them on these products, which I use pretty much every day and night. I hope you will too.” Lorde joins a slew of esteemed women including Rihanna, Beth Ditto and Lady Gaga who have each collaborated with the global makeup powerhouse. A M.A.C. representative said: “I’m very excited to let you all know that we have announced the news of our collaboration (and locally relevant one at that) with NZ singer/songwriter sensation, Lorde. At this stage, we cannot reveal any product related information or specific dates for the collection launch – only that it will be available exclusively online and in select stores in winter 2014.”

Great Lengths introduce App Tape Extensions!

Great Lengths Apps tape extensions, Great Lengths’ latest innovation, are easy-to-use, invisible tape extensions of the same high calibre, guilt free quality of Great Lengths keratin bond extensions. Great Lengths Apps use 100% Remy hair of the finest quality, sourced direct from Indian temples. In a religious offering known as tonsuring, willing devotees shave their heads and offer their hair to the Gods. Their temples take the hair and sell it to hair extension distributors. Great Lengths is the only hair extension company world-wide who directly oversees each step of the process and can trace back every single stand to the donor temple. The proceeds of the hair go to the temple and support both the community and the temple’s running costs. After the hair is purchased it then travels to Italy were it is pigmented and bundled. Through Great Lengths patented technology the hair molecules are lifted from the hair without harsh and damaging chemicals. This secret process is similar to how cashmere sweaters are dyed and, like cashmere, the integrity of the hair remains intact. From the darkest blacks to the most platinum blonds, the hair soft and silky to the touch without brittle dryness. There is no need for masking features such as silicone, and upon obtaining the right colour and tonality, the hair is sent to be hand mixed. After the delicate process of osmosis each bundle of re-pigmented hair is hand blended by colour specialists. The bundles are drawn and blended repeatedly by hand, adding depth and dimension to the colour. The bundles are then divided and delicately attached to the fine adhesive tape bonds. The finished Great Lengths App is the culmination of many months work, from the ethical sourcing straight through to t h e c u t t i n g - e d g e t e c h n o l o g y, all finished off by hand. The extensions arrive to you in pristine condition so that you may look your very best and feel even better. Great Lengths Apps carry dozens of shades for the perfect match to your hair. Natural looking extensions are easily achieved by mixing tones for a perfect blend. We also carry balayage and fashion c ol ou r s, all avai lable i n 4 0 c m length. These tapes are reusable and take minutes to apply.

Mercedes-Benz fashion week Sydney - Desert Designs

“Inspired by the aesthetically Australian and spiritual SS14 collection, the hair look is very tribal with accents of natural elements and colours. The Desert Designs girl is ethereal and a world traveller that the braided, effortlessly glamorous look suits her perfectly.” Jayne Wild, ghd Hair Director. “This season Desert Designs brings together a conceptual collection for both men and women, exploring the themes love and water. We are excited to collaborate with ghd hair director Jayne Wild, creating a contemporary take on a tribal-inspired braid for our ‘Together, Towards the Water’ collection.” Jedda-Daisy Culley

and Caroline Wels, designers. Our collection is inspired by three of Jimmy Pike’s stories. ‘Japingka’ depicts how people and spirits work together, harnessing the forces of nature to create waterholes. ‘Mangkja’ is a white bird from the Dreamtime, he is like an owl. ‘Mirnmirt’ is a sand drawing when a woman talks about marriage with a man, she draws this story in the sand. ‘Together, Towards the Water’ is a colourful, rich in landscape print collection that celebrates the universal sacredness of water and the effects this natural element has on our emotions.”

Create The Look with Jayne Wild: 1. Apply ghd total volume foam to freshly washed hair, this gives the hair body, texture and volume to work with. 2. Use a ghd air hair dryer and a ghd paddle brush to blow dry hair in vertical sections. 3. Using a ghd tail comb, create a centre part. 4. Taking two pieces of hair at the front of each section, add in coloured hair piece to the root by tying a knot in the front of the hair. 5. To create the reverse braid, split section into three then start adding side sections as in ‘classic’ corn row braiding, so that the braid sits at the top, until the ends of the hair are all braided. 6. Repeat on second section. 7. To finish, spray ghd final fix hairspray into the hair to hold and using ghd smooth and finish serum, smooth down any fly aways.

5 Top Stylists join Redken’s elite international artist network!

These newly-inducted industry rock stars are: Auckland’s Dry & Tea senior stylist Zoe Clark, Gracious senior stylist Chantelle Kitt, Blaze senior stylist Natasha Boustridge, Raven stylist Levi Wilson and Kylie Hayes, part-owner of Dunedin’s Moha Morrison Hayes Hairdressing. They will join existing long-term Redken Artists Mana Dave, Kelly Latu and Tim Riwhi, who will lead the New Zealand team. The global Redken artist network is dedicated to enhancing the skills of every salon professional. Redken artists are renowned for their common elements that link artists throughout the world. Whether it’s an in-salon class, a session at the Redken Exchange or a sold-out event at the Symposium, the principles that form Redken’s foundations are all self-evident, impersonal, universal, inspiring, enlightening and empowering. Selected following months of screening, the new five had to put together extensive audition packets in addition to undergoing an intensive panel interview and likeability assessments by Redken directors. New Zealand National Education Manager Kyla Rose says they wowed with their expertise, energy and edge. “They are talented industry professionals who have demonstrated creativity, passion and innovation in their

the Redken Artist Connection. For three days they undertook a training programme to improve their technical, business and communications skills. Each participated in extensive information and training sessions and had the chance to unite and share their knowledge and passion with some of Australasia’s top industry talent. Award-winning Dunedin-based hairdresser Kylie Hayes says the Redken Artist Connection was one of the most inspiring experiences of her career. “Overwhelmed, excited and nervous” when she discovered she’d made the cut to be a Redken artist, Kylie says she felt honoured to be in the company of such a talented band of hair professionals. The Redken energy is second to none. You are in an environment of hugely passionate and talented people, all with the purpose to share and grow alongside one another.” One of Hayes’ most insightful moments at Redken Artist Connection came from a session with Redken’s New York-based Director of Training John Stellato. “John asked the room to rate themselves on a scale of one to 10. The exercise recognised self-doubt, but made people realise that we are all worthy 10s and that we should look at our peers as 10s too,” Hayes says.

Hayes, who has represented New Zealand in Paris and has won numerous awards, says anyone with a passion for hair can be a success in the industry. “Surround yourself with the people you aspire to be like, have the thirst to learn from them but most important always share your knowledge to help others succeed,” Hayes says.

Wellington Fashion Week - Moochi Autumn/Winter 14

Sexy, feminine and timeless hair, decades apart but still on-trend best described Moochi’s Wellington Fashion Week show. Modern takes on a ‘60s classic and a nod to the ‘90s, hairstyles created

softly backcombed at the root area and finished with a sprinkle of Redken Powder Grip 03. The hair was then swept slightly across the forehead and

by Redken Artist, Dry & Tea senior stylist, Zoe Clark, working hand in hand with the Moochi design team to enhance the label’s stunning winter 2014 collection. “Moochi is always about making women feel confident and chic,” says Clark. “These looks are about creating street style with an edge and really complementing the detailing of the clothing and fabrics.” A ‘60s-inspired low ponytail was the perfect look to kick off the show. “This ponytail is a fashion statement in itself - it’s an effortlessly cool look,” says Clark.

gathered into the low ponytail. A final spray of Redken Control Addict 28 gave the perfect night-time shine. The second look – a half topknot - was inspired by the hugely popular ‘90s style. With the corners of the eyes as a guide, a triangle section of hair was taken from the top of the head with Redken Quick Tease 15 added at the root area and blow-dried to create volume and texture. A sprinkle of Redken Powder Grip 03 was then added to give a matte ‘lived-in’ finish and feel. Hair was then pulled through a tie, finishing with a loop to create a topknot, with the ends of the hair left out. To enhance the ‘lived-in’ feel, another sprinkle of Redken Powder Grip 03 was added at the root of the remaining hair with a light spray of Redken Fashion Waves 07. “I’m a big fan of the topknot and I love this cute new hybrid hairstyle,” says Clark. “This has a more natural, slightly grungy feel that is very on-trend. Leaving some hair around the neck, just felt right for that winter look.”

Create the looks with Zoe Clarke: The hair was blow dried straight using Redken Pillow Proof Blow Dry Express Primer followed by Redken Duo Shield 07 Protecting Gel Cream to provide control and shine. Using the arch of the eyebrow as a guide, a deep side part was shaped and taken back just past the crown. The triangular section was then clipped aside, with the remaining hair pulled in to a low ponytail tied at the nape of the neck. Redken Quick Tease 15 was applied to the roots of the initial triangular section and blow-dried in to the hair before being

Spa at the Pullman - Auckland Having enjoyed several functions at the Pullman Hotel over the years, I was eagerly looking forward to experiencing their fabulous ‘Spa at the Pullman’ which was successfully relaunched in 2012. Last year it was rated by Tripadvisor as being one of the 10 best Spa’s in the South Pacific while this year is the only New Zealand finalist in the ‘Best Luxury Hotel Spa’ category for the 2014 Luxury Spa Awards. When I rang to make my booking I was pleasantly surprised to hear that not only was valet parking included, but that I was also welcome to arrive early and relax in the plunge pool/steam room. Unfortunately being on a fairly tight schedule, I had to leave the swim for another time. But definitely an additional benefit! At reception I was provided with dressing gown, slippers and disposable underwear. After changing I was shown through to the main Spa area and offered refreshments. After taking me through to my treatment room my therapist then explained to me how my Spa Ritual was going to work and the various steps she would take me through over the next 90 minutes. What I was about to experience was a Thalgo Polynesia Spa Ritual, a de-stressing massage using vanilla bean oil sourced right from the beautiful islands of Tahiti. Scented vanilla candles also added ambience to the room. The first part of the ritual consisted of an exfoliating skin scrub using sand and oils. I was then wrapped in foil to help my body preserve heat and assist the exfoliation process. Then a relaxing head massage followed before it was off the shower to clean up! Back on the table again the main massage started, very soothing flowing back and forward like the ebb of the tide, a more relaxing feel rather than invigorating. Finally heated soft bags of sand were gently pounded over my body, to simulate circulation. The final stage was the application of a beautiful gold oil over my arms and upper chest, wow!

38 | www.imagesmagazine.co.nz

As always it all seems to come to an end way to soon and I came out feeling refreshed, totally relaxed and floating on air! I took time out to take a moment and sit, savour the experience and enjoy a lovely cup of Lemongrass tea, before joining the rat race again! Will I be back? Absolutely!

The secret sauce to business success! Malcolm Gibbons - Salon Business Guru

In this article I’m going to tell you why just setting goals won’t work, and then I’m going to show you what you need to do so that they will work for you, and only then will they work in harmony with you getting what you want – (this is the secret sauce to your business success) So you’ve heard this right? In business (and Life) it is important to have goals… in fact you’ve probably heard it many times over and over! Your mum has told you, your teachers, you’ve seen it on the telly, you’ve read it in countless books, you have watched “The Secret” where it is inferred that “everything one wants or needs can be satisfied by believing in an outcome, repeatedly thinking about it, and maintaining positive emotional states to “attract” the desired outcome”. You’ve heard about the ‘Law of Attraction’ that subscribes to a theory of vibrational attraction… to the extent that belief is “like attracts like” and that by focusing on positive or negative thoughts, one can bring about positive or negative results. This belief is based on the idea that people and their thoughts are both made from “pure energy”, and the belief that like energy attracts By knowing exactly what you want to achieve, you should then like energy. know where you have to concentrate your efforts. You’ll also Now to some extent these theories may or may not be that quickly spot the distractions that can, and sometimes easily, lead true, but I’m not here to argue or debunk their merits, no – what you astray. I’m hoping to do in this article is to get you – yes I’m talking to Have I said enough to convince you that having a dream, you Mr or Mrs business owner… to get you to realise that you vision or at least some idea of where you want to go AND you need to set goals, or targets, or aims or whatever the hell you want have set some goals around that is a good idea? Like I told you at to call them, but you need to set some, you need to have some the beginning – I’m going to tell you why just setting goals won’t things that you’re aspiring to achieve or at least working towards work… and here’s the reason… Although setting goals is a BIG AND that’s not all, keep reading and I’ll tell you why just doing step towards a desired outcome… the mere fact of just having set this won’t work, and then I’m going to show you what you need to them won’t work - unless you then see to the next step, and that do so that they will work for you! Are you up for that? Great then is creating a PLAN on how you’ll expect to achieve them. read on… There are many reasons why even when we do set goals, we I work with many business owners who feel as if they’re adrift don’t achieve them. Sometimes the goals we set are unrealistic. in the business – I often use the analogy that they are feeling like New Year’s resolutions are typical examples. Suddenly, we expect a cork in a spa pool! They work hard, but they don’t seem to get to change the way we eat, or the way we exercise just because the anywhere worthwhile, they continue to struggle, much like a cork calendar changes. It’s like expecting a child that’s never ridden a bouncing around against the bubbles, and to some extent being bike to suddenly jump on and go, or to run a marathon without reactionary to which way the months of training. These bubble bounces them, also, goals are based on illusion problems just seem to make If you always do what you’ve always done, with little regard to natural a beeline straight for them. growth. you’ll always get what you’ve always got. They are somewhat aimless Another HUGE reason in what they are doing, not we don’t achieve our goals is knowing what the day will bring... Are you getting the picture? because we tend to set and forget them… now, that can work on Does it sound a bit like you? Do you wonder what the day will an automatic oven, or a washing machine… we can set and forget bring, rather than bringing something to the day? Anyway… what time we want our dinner to start cooking before getting I’ve figured out that a fundamental reason they feel this way home, or the laundry to start so we can wake up to it being done is that they haven’t spent enough time dreaming about, thinking ready to peg on the line, because the next steps are programmed about, or writing about what they want from the business, thus in the system and the machine just gets on with doing what it has they haven’t articulated their vision nor set themselves any formal been programmed to do, imagine if there was no program set up goals and are aimless and direction-less. Think about it, would in the machines, that’s right, there would be cold, raw dinners and you head off on a major trip with no idea of where you’re going? unwashed clothes… so, it transpires for us to achieve our goals we I bet not! “If you don’t know where you’re going, who knows, need to program the next steps into our system too. you may already be there” - and you can quote me on that - but So, how do we set and achieve goals? Stephen R. Covey says they sure do hit the nail on the head when it comes to the results it best in his book “7 Habits of Highly Effective People”. “To begin they’re getting because they have no goals. with the end in mind means to start with a clear understanding of The truth of the matter is that Goal setting is an extremely your destination. It means to know where you’re going so that you powerful process for working to get your ideal business, and for better understand where you are now and so that the steps you motivating you to turn your vision into a reality. are in the right direction”. And as I said I’d tell you earlier, the secret sauce to achieving your goals is having appropriate steps to take that lead you to your end result. And that’s where many people fall down, they don’t PLAN the steps or do anything different to what they have been doing in the past, which brings me to my all-time favourite

Strategic planning is the key to helping you gain control of the future and the destiny of your business and provides you with a road-map to achieving your dream business

saying – ‘If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.’ To have change happen, you need to plan to make change happen! We need to understand that Planning helps you set a course for the achievement of your goals. “Planning to plan” is often the single most important component in effective business planning. Spending some thoughtful time preparing to create your plan identifying goals, stating some business objectives, evaluating current and future processes, and considering your “vision” or purpose for your business – all will result in a tightly focused plan. For those of you believing planning to be a daunting task, proper preparation makes the process much more simplified. The consideration needed for planning is to actually do something, yes, many people want different or better results but are not doing anything different or better to get them. You need to pick some well thought out strategies to implement along with the varying tactics you’ll use to get them. It’s worth mentioning that you need to continue to test and measure your strategies and tactics, many business owners continue to spend good money on tactics that aren’t working, but because they are not measuring results, they have no idea they’re not. Now, instead of reacting to unexpected changes (called crisis management) start to plan and anticipate and prepare for them. Businesses caught off guard, spend heaps of time and energy “playing catch up”, they use up their energy coping with immediate problems with little energy left to anticipate and prepare for the next challenges. This vicious cycle locks many businesses into a reactive position. It doesn’t have to be that way. The alternative is called strategic planning which provides a viable alternative to crisis management. Strategic planning is the key to helping you gain control of the future and the destiny of your business and provides you with a roadmap to achieving your dream business – whatever that looks like to you. So if you are setting goals and hoping to achieve them through some miracle of nature without actually planning and taking action on that plan then you will continue to get what you’ve always got, but if you want change and more success, then a strategic plan with actionable tactics is the answer, and for help with that process, contact me on 021 210 8950. Brad Lepper travels to India to join the AU/NZ Sebastian artistic team! Top Auckland Stylist Brad Lepper from Revolver Studio, joined Lisa Muscat from é SALON in New Delhi as part of the AU/NZ Sebastian artistic team. They had the pleasure of meeting artists from various other countries including Japan, China, Taiwan and of course India, at the Wella Professionals Studio. T hey w er e all m e nt or e d by Se ba st i a n International artist Anthony Cole from New York, on the next season’s looks and in particular the two new Sebastian Collections, which Brad and Lisa will be showcasing back here in New Zealand and Australia. “ We covered exciting new cutting techniques never seen before.” Said Brad. Wella Professionals had flown in young stylists from some of the best salons in India to be inspired and learn from the Sebastian artistic team. Brad and Lisa contributed and participated in a showcase where they presented one look each to an audience of over 80 student hairdressers. What they set out to achieve was to demonstrate Sebastian cutting and styling techniques and to inspire their audience to walk away and create something different, pushing their own creativity! The next day the 80 students were split into two classes and divided between all the artists; it was their turn to create something that inspired them from the day before, or try new techniques which they may not have seen before or just needed to practice. “It was all about 100% education and giving back to the industry the lasted trends on styling and cutting. I spent 10 days in India, educating, doing a photoshoot and interviews with the local magazines.” Said Brad. After 8 days the artist group split up and went to various cities. Lisa went to Chennai and Brad travelled down to Bangalore in southern India, where he did two more education showcases featuring high editorial looks before conducting

interviews with local bloggers and magazines. One thing that impressed Brad was that the Indian stylists attending were genuinely thirsty for knowledge and were very eager to learn. When you consider the size of population of India, as opposed to New Zealand, they felt special and really appreciated being selected to be there! New Zealand Stylists need to appreciate just how well off they are here! Look out for the Sebastian INSPIRE showcases featuring Brad Lepper coming your way soon! Hannah Wilkes, owner of Felix Culpa, operated out of a container after the earthquakes as part of the Revival Bars complex on Victoria Street. After a year the salon became so popular it soon outgrew the unique space as two new stylists and themselves could hardly fit in the container! Hannah and her husband Daniel have opened a much bigger salon in the building next door to the container and moved in April 2013. Felix Culpa has now grown to 6 stylists and one apprentice. The salon is renowned for their unusual marketing

campaigns and twice a year they put together a photoshoot of all the stylists at Felix Culpa and put that image on the back of a bus. It helps to create interest in who these stylists are, as the photoshoots are always a bit quirky and edgy. The salon continues to go from strength to strength with Felix Culpa being highly commended in the prestigious L’Oréal Colour Trophy Salon Team Award. Just to add to their glory, Jem was chosen to be part of the L’Oréal id team this year.

L’Oréal Hairdressing Industry Report

Photo: L’Oréal Professionnel The scale and economic power of New Zealand’s hairdressing community has been revealed for the first time in the inaugural L’Oréal Hairdressing Industry Report. The report shows Kiwi women are spending more on their hair per visit than ever before and the number of young people entering the industry is growing. The result of months of industry research and surveying the report shows 8,000 hairdressers and 1,200 apprentices are now employed in New Zealand. Together they create an annual turnover of $0.6 billion - more than each of retail giants The Briscoes Group (Briscoes, Rebel Sport and Living and Giving) and Hallensteins Glassons. The large consumer market turnover is the result of an increasing spend per visit by Kiwi women. The report reveals an average spend of $161 for a cut, colour and blow dry – with an average visit rate of every nine weeks for a haircut and every four months for a colour. L’Oréal New Zealand Professional Products Division General Manager Gary Marshall says the industry is in good health, despite the economic recession of the past few years. “The number of visits per woman has reduced slightly over that time but the overall industry revenue is stable because of increased spend,” he says. “Almost 30 per cent of New Zealand women now rank hair as their top day-to-day beauty priority. It’s a necessity, not just a luxury.” The health of the industry is reflected in the growing number of young people training to become hairdressers – 17 per cent more qualified in 2012 than the year before. Of the 1,200 apprentices in 2012, 80 per cent were under the age of 25 and many were direct school-leavers.

“It’s a career that offers travel, the ability to start your own business and lifelong learning,” says Marshall. “But it’s also fiercely competitive due to low-entry costs and the rivalry in securing and retaining customers.” The industry is dominated by independent owners who have weathered the economic storm by driving customer loyalty and adapting to meet increased demands from clients. The L’Oréal report shows time-pressured New Zealanders are increasingly looking for express products and greater levels of customer service as salons move toward more spalike environments. It has long been known that women reveal much to their hairdressers, but the depth of that client relationship may have been underestimated. Customer insights reveal women want to “fall in love” with their hairdresser and feel guilty when they “cheat” on a regular stylist. Profiled within the report are many of the country’s top stylists who say exceptional service is as important as a great result to ensure customer loyalty. L’Oréal is the world’s leading cosmetic, skin care and hair care company. In New Zealand, it employs 192 staff including nationwide area managers and educators who work to create a strong brand presence for L’Oréal products and services.

Pacific Resort Aitutaki It was with great excitement and anticipation as we boarded the Air Rarotonga jet-prop Saab 340 for our 45 minute journey to one of the most beautiful islands in the world... Aitutaki. Just 230 kilometres north of Rarotonga, we were there before we knew it. As we were landing, the views from the air of the spectacular turquoise lagoon were simply stunning and quite frankly, something that we will treasure for quite some time to come. Aitutaki is one of the 40 ‘Unforgettable Places to See Before You Die’ according to the best selling travel guide by Steve Davey. After a lovely traditional ei greeting upon our arrival, it was a short ride to our holiday destination, the magnificent 5 Star Pacific Resort Aitutaki. Pacific Resort Aitutaki has won numerous awards including the Supreme Award at the Air New Zealand Cook Island Tourism Awards and Australasia’s Leading Luxury Boutique Resort 2013 at the World Travel Awards. In TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards 2014, the resort was named in three categories including Top 25 Luxury Hotels in the South Pacific. We were met by the Duty Manager who very kindly gave us a quick guided tour of Hotel and then she showed us to our amazing bungalow right on the beach! The Resort consists of 27 absolute beach-front Bungalows, Suites and Villas all with sweeping views of the world famous Lagoon. It didn’t take us long to adjust to being in paradise! Right outside our Bungalow on the white sandy beach is where Air New Zealand filmed its new Promotional video just days before we arrived! It was about that time of the day, so we decided to check out the Black Rock Café & Bar down by the pool and we were pleasantly surprised to see on the blackboard that ‘Binnie’ was the special cocktail of the day! Well of course we had to try one or two... Fabulous! It was wonderful to kick back and just relax around the pool before booking in at the Rapae Restaurant for dinner. We both went for the Lamb Rack - delicious. The food, wine list and service were absolutely first class!

Our secret island getaway! There is nothing quite like waking up completely refreshed and straight into an early morning stroll along the beach with virtually no one around and the feel of sand between your toes! It’s easy to see why Weddings and Honeymoons are so popular here... It really is the perfect place for romance! Flippers & goggles were included in our room so we could go snorkelling in the Lagoon. Kayaks are also available for use by guests as well as bicycles for those keen on exploring the rest of the island. After a delicious breakfast at the Rapae restaurant, where you can order whatever takes your fancy as it’s all included in the cost of your stay, we decided to treat ourselves to a relaxing ‘Couples Massage’ at the hotel’s exclusive Spa. Named Tiare after the famous Tahitian flower, we found the Spa discreetly tucked away just off the main hotel foyer. Greeted by our two lovely therapists, we were soon made to feel at ease. We enjoyed a traditional Cool Islands Te Tika Healing massage using healing oils and deep long flowing holistic massage techniques that improve general well being. The massage oil used by the therapists, contained a massive 30% Bio Active Healing Oil produced in the Cook Islands scented with geranium, lemon myrtle & peppermint. Apparently it assists with improving skin tone & reducing impurities. I think we both agreed that out of 10, we would give it a 91/2! It certainly was one of the more therapeutic massages we have ever had! We relayed our experience to the Canadian couple in the Bungalow next door and they went straight down to the Spa and booked in! Unfortunately our adventure in paradise came to an end far too soon and we found ourselves saying goodbye to this remarkable island and to our stay at the amazing Pacific Resort Aitutaki. I can only say this, if you are looking for the ultimate getaway to completely chill out and recharge your batteries while enjoying unsurpassed luxury then Pacific Resort Aitutaki is the place for you! We cannot wait to go back, maybe we will see you there next time?

iD Dunedin Fashion Week 15th Anniversary!

Royal New Zealand Ballet dancers, Couture collections and the latest high-end fashion from New Zealand’s best-loved designers dazzled crowds at this year’s 15th anniversary iD Dunedin Fashion Shows. Standout shows celebrating 15 years of iD Fashion Week included an inspired collection from international guest, Paris-based Australian designer Martin Grant, a new couture collection from New Zealand guest WORLD and stunning winter collections from popular local favourites NOM*d, Carlson, Mild-Red, Tamsin Cooper, Charmaine Reveley, Company of Strangers, Storm and DADA Vintage. Hosted by TV3’s Mike McRoberts and Paula Penfold, the annual iD Dunedin Fashion Shows were the culmination of a week-long celebration of fashion events in the city. Show highlights also included capsule collections from DEVáL and newcomers ‘Clothes I’ve Made’, Highnoontea, Wilson Trollope and eco fashion label Senorita AweSUMO. An incredible choreographed contemporary dance by the Royal New Zealand Ballet’s Loughlan Prior with other dancers Mac Hopper and William Fitzgerald to help launch Tamsin Cooper’s new range of men’s jackets stunned the 3200 showgoers over both nights. “What an incredible way to celebrate 15 years,” says iD Committtee Chair Susie Staley.

Born in Tehran, Mahdian was influenced by her friend, former judge and Mittelmoda representative Stefano Sopelza, to enter the Awards. Her collection impressed the judging panel with its bold geometrical shapes, diverse cuts and innovative technologies. “While overall, the standard of finalists were amazing, the winners stood out because their unique character and personality as a designer came through in their garments,” says iD judge and WORLD creative director Francis Hooper. 2014 Patrick Cameron Photographic Challenge

There are eight images in the collection which Patrick says are “Each designed with their own special technique to achieve interesting textures that evolve into fantastic silhouettes. The shapes are extreme but maintain a flattering and feminine element. This is not commercial hair, but a collection of images that demonstrates the craft and variety skills required to execute the look. They form the inspiration and foundation for you to transfer to a consumer hair style with amazing results. The looks in the collection are inspired by beautiful and intricate hats and fascinators, which play with texture shape and exaggerate forms, to create the looks Patrick says that “you have to understand how to build a structure to understand the balance and to create an elegant shape. I feel very passionate about bringing manual dexterity back into hairdressing. These techniques are easy and fun but also require artistry and finesse. It’s a lesson in construction.” Over the coming weeks Patrick will be revealing a few tips about each look to help inspire you. The complete set of rules and terms of entry are available on the websites and the entry form which is available from the NZARH office, Regional associations and as a download on the Patrick Cameron and NZARH websites. One important change to the rules this year is that hairpieces will be allowed. Patrick has confirmed that, “this time a hair piece will be allowed, but the hairpiece can only make up a quarter of the style, in other words only to complement the finished look, and most importantly the hairpiece must not dominate to finished look”.

Sessions: The Editorial Collection The NZARH is a proud to partner with Patrick Cameron for the third year, in presenting the 2014 Patrick Cameron Photographic Challenge. Open to all members of the NZARH the inspiration for the challenge is driven by Patrick’s latest collection, Sessions: The Editorial Collection. When asked why he continues to support the New Zealand hairdressing industry Patrick said, “As a New Zealand trained Hairdresser living in London and travelling the world as a leading educator, I know the importance of great training which is why I am behind the NZARH one hundred percent. As an industry we must standardise the level of training our new hairdressers receive and apprenticeships and in salon training is the way of ensuring they are get the best start possible.” “With the Patrick Cameron Photographic Challenge I hope to inspire and take the skills developed in training and working in a salon day to day and allow new and experienced stylists to have fun experimenting and developing their skills”. Entrants are asked to present three images of a style inspired by the collection which utilise the techniques and shape to create a commercially wearable hairstyle. The three images front, profile and back – are of the one hairstyle.

A Step by Step guide to curling Hair Extensions! If you just happen to have tight, curly hair and want hair extensions, then we have the solution for you. Gary Rogers from Rogers Design Forum in Parnell, has perfected the art of creating tight curly hair extensions. With a reputation around Auckland as the ‘extension king’ Gary has been extending the hair length of the rich and famous for many years. He now shares his knowledge with other hairdressers to help them become more confident when faced with such a challenge. Some say it can’t be done... Gary will show you how!

3 Roll hair at 360ª flat. Paper the bottom and band the ends using size 8 rubber bands. Pin rolled rods to head. Continue until you have enough on your head whilst ensuring you keep the hair moist with spray water.

4 Once you have completed rolling, Perm as follows: Mix together 60ml Hydrowave with 3 ml Hydrowave Phase 2. Apply by dotting over rods 2 to 3 times.

Finished hair style

2 1 Using 12 pkts of 50cm 100% Human Hair Bonds, take 2 at a time and sellotape these together.

82 | www.imagesmagazine.co.nz

Tee Pin the sellotaped bonds to shaved mannequin head. Shampoo and Condition hair. This balances out the ph levels.

5 Use bag to cover: first fill bag with hot air to kick the process off. Leave covered for approximately 25 minutes.

6 Place head in basin face down and rinse for approximately 8 to 10 minutes. Place mannequin back on stand and towel dry with small towels, finishing with paper towels and paying particular attention to the paper ends.

7 To neutralise, mix 50ml Permfix with 50ml water. Using the same procedure as perming, dot over rods 2 to 3 times. Rinse thoroughly - we recommend 8 to 10 minutes. Repeat neutralisation once more.

8 Brush on thick repair conditioner to each rod using a tint brush and bowl. Then using your fingers, squeeze conditioner in all around each rod. Leave for approximately 5 minutes and rinse thoroughly. Rods are left in throughout this procedure so the curl formation remains strong.

Emma Barry, who we used as our model, has been going to Rogers Hair Design for years and gets her extensions re-applied every 6 to 8 months. The finished look is simply divine and definitely worth the effort.

9 Towel dry hair. Unwind from rod and leave on towel to dry overnight or when needed.

Thoughts by Shar Sutherland Todd Fake It Till You Make It!

Many years ago I read one of my all time favourite books by Andrew Matthews, called Being Happy. In it was a thoughtprovoking story about a famous violinist. He had just performed an astonishing concert and was approached soon after by a mesmerized woman wishing to thank him. She told him she would have given her life to play as he just had. To this, the violinist responded, “I did!” That resonated intensely with me because I have endeavoured over the years to be at the leading edge of an industry that at times can be highly perplex. As my fellow hairdressing friends, mentors and competitors all know, being at the top of hairdressing in New Zealand is extremely demanding but worth every second. I have clambered my way from the bottom and given everything a go. I never said no to anyone and I jumped at the chance to help or be involved in EVERYTHING. On weekends, all hours and mostly in my own time, I trained, practiced and networked like there was no tomorrow. For some the Green Eyed Monster has reared its ugly head along the way. It intrigues me when comments are passed after a competition or event that it must have been rigged because it is always the same ones winning. If people focused that same energy on their own performance, they too may achieve their desired outcome. Paul Serville is someone I have always admired and he was coming down to do a show back in my early years so without a doubt I wanted to be involved. I was told he didn’t need hairdressing help so I put my hand up as the makeup artist and was promptly sent their requirements. As I read through the instructions I soon realised I was in too deep. Slightly panicking, I held my head high with confidence and went with the “Fake it till you make it” method. It worked and the models looked stunning! I think Paul would have been horrified if he knew that the only real experience I actually had was on myself (sorry Paul). My career journey has been in waves of ups and downs as has my life and I wouldn’t be where I am without all of them. I have lost more times than I have won but I never ever gave up. I learned that if you stick at something long enough it will pay off because where your focus goes, your energy flows and results show. Ironically the only lucky people I know are also hard working with extremely great work ethic and a willingness to help others selflessly. So if you are thinking of an easy ride to the top, without the hard work and challenges along the way, I suggest you jump off now. As far as I am aware, the only place that success comes before work is in the dictionary.

Sue Nicholson PSYCHIC MEDIUM

Internationally acclaimed psychic medium Sue Nicholson is well known for her work on New Zealand television, appearing on TVNZ’s popular ‘Sensing Murder’ and as a regular guest on ‘Good Morning’. Sue also conducts live shows throughout New Zealand and overseas. She regularly holds seminars, teaches workshops and continues to work one on one with private clients. We caught up with Sue to see what she has been up to lately and find out how she achieves that amazing hair colour! I have been very busy touring around the country doing shows but for the past three years I have also been working on a special project of my own – ‘The Butterfly Guiding Light Oracle’, a set of empowerment cards which have only just been released this year. As a little girl I was always fascinated by butterflies. When I was very young I would get a piece of paper and fold it in half then draw a butterfly and colour half of the butterfly with paint. I would then fold this back in half to get the reverse image on the paper of the entire butterfly, which really fascinated me! Three years ago I knew I was going to have my own butterfly cards, but at the time I could not envision how or what they would be like. I had a few attempts at trying to explain to designers how I wanted them to look but just could not get my vision across to anyone. Becoming quite frustrated I put them to one side and then a couple of years later when I was talking to my close friend Amanda, we had a eureka moment where she suddenly understood my vision for the cards! She was able to put onto paper and bring into reality what I could see in my head. I am so pleased as the final result is a glorious spiritual product for everyone to learn from and enjoy. There are 49 beautiful and inspiring cards in the deck – divided into seven colour groups representing the seven chakra systems: Red (root), Orange (sacral), Yellow (solar plexus), Green (Heart), Blue (Throat), Indigo (Third Eye) and Violet (Crown).

Within each colour group there are seven cards. Each colour group contains two cards of a higher significance known as the Guardian and the Teacher that give specific additional advice. The cards can be used as a day to day tool to give you insight into specific questions in your life regarding work, relationships, home, etc. We are on tour at the moment in the North Island with the ‘Other Side’ shows. I am holding regular seminars alongside these shows on how to develop your intuition and get in touch with your spirit guides and have now also developed workshops for the Butterfly cards to teach those who want to use them in a more indepth way. I often get asked about my hair and as I have been changing my hair colour for about the last decade, have ended up going for more vibrant colours recently. I feel as women get older just having a few lighter shades put through their hair, lifts the skin tone. In my case it’s not just a few shades of colour - I go for the most bright and vibrant shades I can! Over the years I have tried many different brands but came across ‘Scruples’ last year and just loved their amazing range of colours from the naturals to the very vibrant. The thing I noticed was my hair wasn’t dry or coarse, even with the blonde put through it. Also I love to go out into the sun which is not good for coloured hair as it fades, but I have found that the Scruples colour stays the same. The condition of my hair is also very good so I think the products are great! I am busy working on a series of on-line webinars at the moment so that I can reach and help more people and about to launch an amazing new range of crystal jewellery based on quantum physics and healing – this jewellery is unlike anything that has been seen before and is something I am very excited about. If your readers want to be kept posted on the launch of this new range of crystals or find out anything else about what I am doing they can visit my website at www.suenicholson. co.nz For more information on the butterfly cards go to www.theguidinglight.co.nz

Amanda Tonge, Stylist at Miss Fox in Wellington, tells us how she creates Sue’s unique look using Scruples True Integrity: “Scruples True Integrity contains the lowest ammonia content of any professional hair colour brand in the industry: .04 % - .8%. It has the reflection of a translucent with the coverage of an opaque and can also be used as a demi-permanent. It also contains botanicals - Orange Flower Extract, Orange Oil, Sunflower, Vitamin E and Aloe Vera.” To create Sue’s look I applied the following: Roots – 7CC, 6RR and Conceal. Foils – Power Blond, Ends – 7CC, 6RR and an inch of red intensifier. Our special weapon Scruples Conceal was added into the mix to help cover any pesky greys. By adding Conceal, we eliminated the need to add any base colour therefore there was no sacrifice to any vibrancy. This is a strong consideration when choosing colour for Sue because she requires maximum vibrancy and coverage in one step. Another feature of the colour that delighted Sue was the grapefruit fragrance, lack of staining and absolute minimal bleed-off from the red into the blonde. True Integrity has a beautiful colour selection of 78 shades with maximum grey coverage and high shine without colour bleed. It also contains Scruples patented PBX (protective barrier complex) - a blend of four essential ingredients which shields the hair colour molecule and deposits it deep into the hair.

Backstage at iD Dunedin

iD Dunedin is the pinnacle on the fashion calendar for the Southern city and it’s a time of great excitement and camaraderie for local salon Klone. The Klone team has been working on the hair for the Emerging Designer Show since its inception 10 years ago and relishes taking on the opportunity every year. With a large team of 15, the entire Klone workforce leaps on board to assist and that makes for a really great atmosphere and cooperative teamwork, says salon owner Karl Radel. The show is a collaborative process for the Klone team and involves a lot of brainstorming to come up with the hero looks for each theme. “We treat it as a competition and those who come up with the winning idea get to lead the direction of that style. It creates a sense of ownership for team members and something they can be proud of,” Karl says.

Stylist shares fashion week hair secrets! From polished ponytails and tousled waves to braided crowns and boyish looks, some of the biggest hair trends for 2014 have emerged on the catwalk at iD Dunedin Fashion Week. All were created by the talented Darryl McNamara, owner of Dunedin based salon, Aart on St Andrew and his creative team. The task was no mean feat, with more than 10 hair looks within one show, some models sporting multiple looks and all unveiled on the Southern Hemisphere’s longest catwalk at Dunedin’s historic Railway Station.

“It was an incredible project and one we started prepping for three months prior to the show to get it right,” says McNamara. “The designers showed us what they’d like and we reinterpreted it. Darryl and his team worked closely with WORLD designer Francis Hooper to create the sleek, structured high ponytail for the label’s outstanding collection. Created by first smoothing the hair, tresses are then swept up into the high ponytail. Redken Flex Shape Factor 22 is used to smooth flyaways around the face, while Redken Outshine 01 Anti-Frizz Polishing Milk is applied to finish the ponytail ends. Similarly, the Aart team worked side by side with Nom*D’s designers to create the intricate braided look to accompany its clothing collection. Models’ hair is loaded with Redken Guts 10 Volume Spray Foam and Redken Fabricate 03 Heat Active Texturizer and then blow dried in to create texture. Dual braids are created by twists on each side of the centre part, with the braided ends left out and frayed. Moving away from the updos, models’ hair is taken completely out for Company of Strangers. Yet, despite remaining loose, a tomboyish androgynous look is retained with the stringy texture created using Redken Guts 10 Volume Spray Foam and Redken Fabricate 03 Heat Active Texturizer. “ We h a d u p t o 1 7 models to style at once and you don’t have a lot of time for each look,” says McNamara of the show’s 15th year. “We needed the right products to add texture, shine, and help to tease, braid and create the perfect curls. Our stylists couldn’t have done such an outstanding job on this project without Redken’s amazing product portfolio.”

Naked Tan’s Lee Taylor

Lea Taylor, founder of Naked Tan, wanted to create a range of tanning products that enabled women on the go to feel and look beautiful in less than 2 hours. Thanks to Lea, this is finally possible! She has revolutionized the market by introducing the first wash ‘n’ wear 2 hours spray tan that makes every woman feel like a goddess! The Naked Tan spray tanning formulation is enriched with Aloe Vera and contains no parabens, no alcohol, no nano particles, is odour-free and organic! So we can feel beautiful and care for our planet. Now with a 6-year proven formula, Naked Tan is considered as the market leader in Australia and can be found in over 3000 leading salons, day spas and hairdressers across Australia, Fiji, Bali and New Zealand. A 10-minute salon treatment results in a goddess like glow which develops over time and is ready to wash ’n’ wear in only 2-hours (compared to the 8-hour process of other traditional tanning solutions). Naked Tan specializes in providing two ranges. A Professional Range for salons & spas and a DIY retail range for consumers. The beauty world has never been the same since the launch of Naked Tan solutions. Who needs 8 hours to feel like a goddess nowadays? If you do, you should try a Naked Tan! It’s best for longer. We caught up with Lee while she was in Auckland recently and over lunch at Ponsonby Central she shared with us the story behind Naked Tan. “I started the brand in 2005 when I commenced working on a product basically because we needed to innovate and make a splash on the market with a new tan”. At the time the market was very demanding, women only having available the 8 hour or 12 hour tan, so we came up with a formula that it could be sprayed on and washed off but achieve the same results in just 2 hours. We had been looking at the NZ market but we are glad that we held off because now we have House of Camille to distribute our product which really aligns with our brand. “We had been looking for a good spray tanning brand for about 2 years but we wanted to make sure that we got the right one! It’s been great to have Lee come over as a national trainer and start the ball rolling! We have had 16 clinics come in for training yesterday and straight away sold six packs which included the Machine, solution etc. as soon as they saw the application in action they had to have it.” Said Steve Arthur from House of Camille.

Britomart Precinct welcomes The Face Place MedSpa

Cosmetic Medicine clinic, The Face Place MedSpa, are the latest to join the ‘beauty hub’ at the Britomart Precinct, with a beautiful new clinic that opened in April. Dr Catherine Stone and her team are recognised as industry innovators, with Catherine starting The Face Place in 2001 as Australasia’s first specialised Botox clinic, then launching The Face Place MedSpa as NZ’s first medical spa in 2004. Catherine helped the New Zealand public understand and accept cosmetic treatments with her role as a medical expert on the top-rating TV program ‘Ten Years Younger’. The new MedSpa is located at ground level on Customs Street East, with a highly visible street frontage.

“Treatments such as Botox are now much more socially accepted, so we’re delighted to stand proud for the industry, and send the clear message that ‘this is normal’. We do have options available for those who still prefer discretion, however the demand for this is becoming less and less.” The team of doctors, nurses and dermal therapists at The Face Place MedSpa provide safe, simple and effective medically proven cosmetic treatments that can be done in a lunch-time. The clinic has built a reputation for providing high quality treatments with beautiful natural looking results, with loyal clients who regularly fly from all around the world. “We believe everyone has their own unique beauty,

“When we first moved to Vulcan Lane, cosmetic treatments were highly discrete and very ‘hush-hush’, so our premises were hidden away on the second level, to offer the highest levels of confidentiality,” says Catherine. “You only knew where to find us if you had a referral, or were a client.”

and our aim is to enhance this while softening out the negative signs of ageing. We also love some fun and personality, and this is reflected in our display images and the decor of the new clinic – which challenge the status quo.” www.thefaceplace.co.nz

Tenuous trends...

Jamie Dryden Fabrik Hamilton In an ever expanding digital world the planet is shrinking and the search to unearth the next trend is becoming critically tedious. Far too often have I sat in at ‘look and learn’ sessions by the industry’s leading crimpers listening to them harp on about current and predicting trends which I feel is all too predictable. They all do it. Every major product company releases a quota of beautiful cut and coloured images and then normally ask a leading stylist in their list of consumers to present these trends to the world. Now the world is usually made up of provincial hair stylists who are glad to just get out and see some good work, which I think is great, but the question I always ask myself is, would this be more interesting if I was watching someone’s vision and unique technical ability?

I think as so called creative hairdressers we need to stand up and start showcasing our vision, like the brilliant Emiliano Vitale and Lisa Muscat at NZ Hair Industry recently held in the Pullman Hotel in Auckland. This was a showcase of the most beautiful, creative and breath taking work I have witnessed in ages. Not one bit swayed by trends or popularity but presented with panache and executed on stage with the highest level of technical ability. Amazing. Inspiring! Now I think these’ look and learn’ session have their place but the format is all wrong. Too often you turn up excited to see one of your peers work and vision only to be bogged down in what a product company believes to be current and what product you need to be using in order to get this certain look and to think we have to pay for this two hours of corporate advertising! I’ll pay for vision and creativity any day but I always leave most presentations feeling a little under inspired and short changed. Trends are clearly an important part of a hairdressers life but most hairdressers with any sort of am imagination will spot a trend before a client comes in and asks for it. There is no need to turn up at some fancy hotel in Tauranga to have a well known hairdresser (usually from a bigger town) tell you. If I turn up at one of these events I want to leave smiling in wonderment at what I’ve just witnessed. I don’t necessary want to leave thinking I’m going to do that tomorrow on Mrs Smith but wondering how on earth was that possible to do with hair. This

92 | www.imagesmagazine.co.nz

is what inspires me. It drives me to think of what I can do that no-one has done before, to leave my mark on the industry. That’s what I teach at Fabrik. As a male hairdresser I have always shrunk away from trends myself. My hair and dress sense hasn’t changed much since my impressionable teenage years in the 90’s trying to emulate my idols The Stone Roses, well my hair has got shorter and my jeans skinnier but overall I still wear pretty much the same style of clothes and keep my hair tidy and short. I guess if I was to describe my style I’d call it one outfit for all occasions. I don’t look out place at the gym or at a function in the same outfit, jeans and trainers all the way. This seems to humour my younger colleagues but let me tell you there is nothing more disconcerting than a man in his 30’s trying to look to hip or trendy, hairdresser or not. So the whole point of this short bio is because I recently attended the music festival Laneways. I was alert as always to what the trendies and alternative kids were up too. To my horror the main trend or trends that stood out were for the boys. The top knot with the sides crudely shaved was the stand out, hoards of alternative indie kids jigging about like music loving sensei. This is a hairdressers worst fear as each individual appeared to be grooming themselves, completely devoid of any expertise. Shaky horseshoe lines from recession to recession with the most pitiful of ponytails held together strainingly by their little sisters hair tie. Boohoo. The second and most distressing trend was the full beard. In their numbers they were, like a throw back to 1970’s folk concerts or a Morris dancing convention in the West country of England. Distressing it was for myself as I had previously sported some man fluff on my chin through no other reason than laziness and decided to shave it off as summer time in NZ is hot enough for a Scotsman. Well relief that I had been very practical in my preference for comfort over looks as I may have been part of the beardie club. Dancing and mingling with my beard brothers was not on my list of things to do over the course of the day and I was very glad to have shaved my badge of acceptance off. The funniest thing happened that day though when I bumped into an old friend who I hadn’t seen for years. I hadn’t seen this person since working in Auckland around 2005 and could only be described as a clean cut fashionable person. He had always bemoaned my choice of bearded face and my response was it was only laziness and hate of the razor blade. Well there he was in all his glory sporting the double Whammy; top knot and full beard. Well astonished I was at this 30 something trendy and the power of trends. I know not all hairdressers who present and teach throughout the country can’t be as talented as Mr Vitale and Miss Muscat but we do seriously have to raise our game and stop hiding behind ‘trends’ and passing it off as creativity.

Hair Extensions Rule at Melbourne fashion festival ! Hair extensions were huge at this year’s at Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival, and one of the most talked about shows was the ‘Camilla’ showcase with one of Australia’s most talented and influential hair stylists Brad Ngata using clip in hair extensions. To create the looks, 4-5 hair stylists were assigned to each model at a time to attach a total of 150 full head of hair extensions, which is 15000 grams of hair that’s 15kgs in weight! The brief: The Camilla girl is a warrior, tribal, with a primal energy! Create the look with Brad Ngata: 1. Add texture to the hair with a sea salt 2. Add pre-done dreadlocks, extended plaits and basket weaving to create drama. 3. M u l t i - t e x t u r a l , p r i m a l c o l o u r s , extended length will dramatise the hair and bring an element of wonder. 4. All of the hair was prepped with the below products to give a dry, “dirty” texture. The dreadlocks had been prepped with Homme Wax and Fix Design the hair is back combed then the wax and fix design is applied and we rub the hair together causing friction fusing the hair together then we used an iron to seal the texture in. Brad’s trend forecast: “Look out this year for wet and dry buns and ponytails, straight and smooth long hair as well as wet and dry textured buns. There is definitely an air of sophistication to this years runway looks; it’s all about timeless classics with a twist”.
