Folklore & Fiction
in The West Country by Brian Spencer
Entrance to Tintagel Castle; birthplace of King Arthur
A
uthors and artists find inspiration for their work in Cornwall, be it from the perfect light of St Ives, or when basing their novels on the local folklore, by setting them in its countryside and coast. During a short coastal walk near St Agnes on the north Cornwall coast, we realised that we were looking at the opening scene in the popular costume drama, Poldark. This series based on Winston Graham’s novels is set in and around early eighteenth century Cornwall. In the opening clips, Poldark is seen galloping furiously along the cliffop. There is no indication of where this is, but it didn’t take us long to pinpoint it about half way between St Agnes Head and the attractive Porthtowan Bay to its south. What aren’t shown in the opening titles are the enigmatic towers of Thomas Newcomen’s pumping engines, lining the cliffs below where Poldark madly gallops. The ponderous pumps were used to dewater the local mines and feature in later episodes based on the lives of those who mined the tin ore stretching far out under sea. Other scenes (there are 23 in all) that are based out of doors use the coastal and sea scenery; especially the old stone-built harbour complete with vintage sailing ships moored at Charlestown on the south coast near St Austell.

The ‘Manderley’ boat house from the 1940s film of the Daphne du Maurier book Rebecca.
The harbour near St Austell is transformed into Charlestown.
The setting for the more up to date series of Doc Martin is further along the coast at the tiny fishing village Port Isaac. In the series this becomes Port Wenn, home of the grumpy but caring doctor who looks after the health of the tiny community. Moving north again along the coast, the next feature that took our notice is a real building, but one that is mixed with myth, legend and folklore. This is Tintagel Castle, where King Arthur, saviour of England against the marauding Danes, is supposed to have been born. Not only the king, but the wizard Merlin, is supposed to have lived there, where the wizard trained infant king for his future duties as monarch. The castle stands on one of the most spectacular sites in all Britain and it is easy to populate it with knights and sorcerers. Standing on a dramatic rocky headland, connected to the mainland only by a slender neck of rock, Tintagel Castle was an important power centre and trading port, inhabited by Early Medieval Cornish rulers. Recent excavations have uncovered links going back to the 5th century, a base for trading tin and other goods for luxuries from as far away as the Mediterranean. Links with the legendary ‘King Arthur’ were first recorded in the 12th century, by Geoffrey of Monmouth. It was he who wrote the story of Queen Ygraine who was shut away at Tintagel by her husband to protect her from the lusts of Uther Pendragon. Over the centuries, Tintagel’s romantic setting has fascinated writers and artists, ranging from Tennyson, to the pre-Raphaelite painters. Tintagel Castle is an English Heritage property, including the attractive beach and cove. Despite not being supposed to have links with past heroes and heroines, Tintagel Post Office just reeks of a past. Standing in the centre of Tintagel village, the medieval half-house as it is technically called, sits beneath a massive stone roof that still holds good after 600 year despite its alarming dips and hollows. Today the National Trust owned building is furnished as the Victorian letter-receiving office that once served the local community. The cottage garden to the rear offers a retreat from Tintagel’s bustling High Street. Daphne du Maurier set many of her novels in and around the Cornish coast and moors. Living at the head of a creek near Fowey, she used her home and surroundings as the back-cloth of her tales of romance and intrigue. Her home Menabilly became Manderley, the fictional home of Maxim de Winter, the husband in Rebecca which she wrote in 1938,

filmed later by Alfred Hitchcock. The two artists, du Maurier and Hitchcock, became good friends and colleagues, working together on Rebecca (1940) and The Birds (1953). In all five of du Maurier’s books were made into films: Frenchman’s Creek (Mitchell Leisen – 1944), My Cousin Rachael (Henry Coster – 1952), and Don’t Look Now (Nicolas Roag – 1973).
The narrow sea inlet where Daphne du Maurier set Frenchman’s Creek.
The narrow inlet from the sea below her home became Daphne du Maurier’s Frenchman’s Creek and the Barton Lands further along the coast were the backcloth for My Cousin Rachael. The idea of writing Jamaica Inn came about one wild and foggy night when the weather forced her to abandon her journey across Bodmin Moor. This made her decide that the inn would be an ideal base for smugglers bringing luxuries from deserted beaches along the coast, carrying them onwards to ready markets further inland. The inn still stands, but in its present form as a kind of visitor centre. Moors of the south west are full of tradition, folklore and archaeological remains. Dartmoor was peopled by our earliest ancestors who left stone circles, cairns and lines of stones often stretching miles over what is now bleak wasteland. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle had his detective hero, Sherlock Holmes do battle with the Hound of the Baskervilles amidst the deep bogs of Grimpen Mire.
The St Ives light attracts artists from around the world.
Beyond the moors and Cornish Coast, that mistress of crime fiction Agatha Christie made her Devon home further to the east in Devon. This was Greenway, an attractive house high above the Dart Estuary. Here on a simple typewriter she wrote scores of crime novels, creating the likes of Poirot, her Belgian crime-fighting genius. Several of her stories are set in and around Greenway, or its fictitious alter-ego; many of her books were made into films or stage plays, but none have been as successful as The Mousetrap, still going without a break for over seventy years on the London stage. Greenway is a National Trust property. Due to the narrow roads between the house and Torquay, visitors are requested not to arrive by car, but to use the vintage bus running frequently from Torquay to Greenway. Booking is essential for anyone finding it necessary to use a car. There is also a train halt about half a mile away connected to the house by a shuttle bus or woodland walk.

The Lost Houses
of Derbyshire by Maxwell Craven
Photograph by Richard Keene taken in May 1855, showing the house virtually unchanged since it had been built 150 years before. [Derby Museums Trust]
MEYNELL’S HOUSE DERBY Francis Meynell (1698-1768) was a member of what was, in the early eighteenth century, a younger branch of the great Derbyshire house of Meynell, recorded in the county as of knightly status from c. 1100. His father had an estate at Anslow in Staffordshire and property elsewhere in that county, but also set up as an apothecary in Derby, building himself, in the first years of Queen Anne a very fine town house immediately adjacent to the surviving house built by his friend Alderman William Franceys. CountryImagesMagazine.co.uk | 21
The Lost Houses
of Derbyshire by Maxwell Craven
The building, which was destroyed in 1935 to make way for a branch of Martin’s Bank, was without doubt by the same hand as its larger and rather grander next door neighbour, Alderman Franceys’s house of 1694. Although the architect is not known, both houses have very similar detailing, especially in respect to the first floor window surrounds. Indeed the upper storey surrounds are eared and contain rose paterae, a feature still to be found on the former Lloyd’s
bank on the corner of Market Place and in Sadler Gate as well as the former George Inn (now Fould’s) a few doors up in Iron Gate, of 1691. Unlike Franceys’s House, Meynell’s three storey brick façade was articulated by a giant Corinthian order enclosing all five bays of windows, with an entrance to the shop part of the premises between bays one and two, and a carriage arch giving access to the family’s entrance and the yard

behind, between bays three and four. A large scar in the tiles on the street front of the roof in a photograph of 1855 suggests that when built and until the mid-19th century, there was a row of dormer windows there lighting an attic Inside, the first floor contained two spacious rooms with fielded oak panelling, and entered through eight-panelled doors in muscular eared architraves. The staircase was a fine one, also in
oak with two turned balusters per tread. Even the garden was of above average description, boasting a ‘pilastered summerhouse’, presumably a brick edifice built en-suite with the house.. At the time of the ’Forty-five, when Meynell and his family, faced with the imminent arrival of the Jacobite claimant in the shape of Bonnie Prince Charlie, forbore to join the Whig corporation in their flight to Nottingham, they found themselves host to Alexander Forbes, 4th Lord Pitsligo and his entourage. The words ‘Charming Kitty Bailey/Wm. Napier’ were found scratched by a diamond on the pane of a window. But any romantic tale of Jacobite romance it vitiated by the date below – 1747 – and by the absence of any Napiers from the roll of officers in the Highland army! Nevertheless, bearing in mind that ‘Bailey’ may be as mis-spelling of ‘Bayly’ a connection with Francis cousin’s and sometime Derby MP Thomas Bayly might reasonable be postulated. Francis Meynell, had been born at Anslow Park, was baptised at Rolleston, for Anslow is not a separate parish. He had been educated at Derby School and on his father’s death in 1727 inherited his modest landed estate in Anslow, making the Derby residence a true town house, as well as being the place of business, the shop portion being serviced on the ground floor.
his father. In 1778 he was practising in London, despite having inherited the apothecary’s business in 1768, and married a cousin there, from whom his son Godfrey was eventually to inherit a large portion of the ancient Meynell Langley estate, which had gone out of the family in the fifteenth century. Thus with John in London, the business was run after 1768 by his brother Francis (1738-1825) from Rotten Row - as the area was then called, prior to the demolition of the houses opposite
Meynell House in 1870-77. At some stage, this Francis retired, and there is no record of his two sons having succeeded him. The date was, in all probability 1796, for that is the date claimed as that of the initiation of their business by Thomas and James Storer, who took the building on and opened the shop part as a grocery. The section on the right of the ground floor they let off to Benjamin Smith, a hosier who was there for many years. In 1890, the Storer family sold the business to

In their day, apothecaries were the nearest most people got to having a GP, and they were in consequence, the repository of much confidential information concerning their clients. Indeed, this fact is often used to explain why Henry Franceys, the apothecary next door (son of Alderman William), was allowed into the County Assemblies when in fact, not being a member of the gentry (unlike Meynell), he should have been restricted to the separate Borough Assemblies. More likely, Franceys got in because he had married a Harpur of Twyford Hall, and by chance more than intent, Francis Meynell had also married a Harpur, but in his case she was Jane, daughter of John Harpur of Littleover Old Hall, senior cousins to the Twyford branch. The next step up from being an apothecary in those days was to train as a surgeon, and in due time Francis Meynell’s son John (1726-1802) was duly articled in 1740 to a local surgeon and in 1747 – the year that next door neighbour Henry Franceys died, enabling Francis Meynell to take over most of his clientèle – he qualified and worked at first from the house alongside

The Lost Houses

Giles Austin a west-countryman, who traded under his own name. He rebuilt the house, improving the shop façade, adding iron bratishing to the facia and installing a parapet centered by a pediment which read TEAS COFFEES/1796/ AUSTIN & Co/GROCERIES which clearly indicates that he considered himself merely a continuator of the concern.
In 1910, he moved out of the house itself, building a pleasant detached villa in a couple of acres of Village Street, Normanton-by-Derby called Homelands (later replaced by a large grammar school of the same name, now itself no more) and the upper floors of the Market Place house were henceforth devoted to storage, although he did fit gas and electricity.
Austin had no children, however, and on his death in 1929, the business was sold again to a well-established grocery called Hodgkinson’s, and they continued the shop until 1935 when they moved the business almost next door. The house was then sold (possibly by the Meynells, who may well have retained the freehold) to Martin’s Bank. They were not so kind towards it, however, and demolished the old house to make way for their new bank. The only thing rescued was double bowed neo-classical timber facade of the shop of c. 1770, just visible in the early photograph. This was presented to the Museum and is still in their care. The quality of the carving is excellent; one would love to know who made it. The new building was erected to a design by the Nottingham firm of Bromley, Cartwright and Waumsley. This was at least built on the same scale (unlike any modern successor!) but in brilliant white Portland stone and with its windows in steel from Crittall’s. Since the 1960s it has been the outlet of a succession of building societies.

Antiques & Collectibles by Maxwell Craven
Royal Commemorative Mugs Most commemorative objects, from coins to china plates, tend to cost a lot more to buy than you get back for re-sale, as the plethora of relatively modern specimens which come up for sale in Bamford’s general sales testify. Today you can expect to pay in the region of £10 or more for a 1953 Coronation mug, given free to most school children (including me) at the time. But it is not so much the occasion commemorated, but the manufacturer that made the item. For instance had one’s parents gone for a Wedgwood one for about £1 with a design after that striking and original inter-war artist Eric Ravilious, then today you might expect £250-280. The best names show the best returns, in other words. The earliest Royal images on mugs (or similar) were those of Charles I and Charles II which turn up on a few extremely rare tin-glaze mugs, for which you may expect to pay £5,000 or more assuming the condition is better than dire. Up until the mid-eighteenth century all commemorative mugs were hand painted, too, but towards the end of that era however, the invention of printing on pottery allowed for mass production. As a result you can find plenty of George III images making that monarch known to far more of his subjects as a result. Consequently, it is possible to put together a selection of mugs that chronicle the most significant events of the King’s 60 year reign. Those that celebrate the return of George to health after his first bout in mental difficulties sell for about £400, depending on condition. The reigns of his two sons George IV and William IV saw mugs to commemorate both their coronations and deaths. These tend to cost £300 or more, although royalty was not the only subject to catch the potters’ eye. Heroes of the wars against France, Nelson and Wellington in particular 30 | CountryImagesMagazine.co.uk
Elizabeth II Coronation Wedgwood/Ravilious were at a premium. Today it seems to be Nelson who outshines Wellington in popularity. A Nelson, blue printed mug used to make around £400 but since the bicentenary of Trafalgar in 2005 prices have increased noticeably, whereas the bicentenary of Waterloo had a notably less inflationary effect on Wellington’s. For the new collector, the reign of Queen Victoria from 1837 to 1901 offers the most opportunity with prices starting at £20. Her Coronation (1838) mugs have been the subject of debate amongst collectors as to whether they were made in Staffordshire or South Wales, although in either case auction estimates hover around £750-850 for examples in good condition. Fortunately Victoria’s Golden and Diamond jubilees of 1887 and 1897 offer richer pickings and more affordable ones, too. A good maker such as Doulton produced Jubilee bone china mugs in several colour schemes, now fetching around £120 for a clean example. Earthenware Jubilee mugs by lesser known makers can regularly be found for £30 and less but some of these bear images of the old Queen which she would have found less than flattering.
Pictures on this page; clockwise from top left: Edward VIII by Laura Knight. Victoria Coronation Swansea mug, slight damage, £500. George II rare Worcester mug, 1755, £1,350. Prince of Wales inauguration 1969 by Delphine Pottery £10-15 & mark. George III & Queen Charlotte, c. 1809 Staffordshire creamware £1000 plus.
The advent of the new century saw more in the way of Coronation mugs: Edward VII, George V, Edward VIII, George VI and the Queen all provoked a welter of commemoratives of varying quality. For most a price of between £10 and £40 should be the norm, and at Bamfords they turn up our general sales rather than in Fine Art ones. People often mistakenly assume that because Edward VIII reigned only 10 months and abdicated without being crowned, his commemoratives will be scarce, but this is not the case. In fact every enterprising pottery in the country put out commemoratives in anticipation of his coronation, and they had to be sold off inexpensively when he decided to give it all up for love. One of the best is, surprisingly Burleigh earthenware, but designed by Derbyshire’s own Dame Laura Knight, which sells for £50-60. As we are currently remembering the slaughter in the trenches and elsewhere occasioned by the Great War, mugs relating to this conflict have edged up a little being usually in the £30 to £60 bracket. In more recent years subject matter has included our Queen’s two Jubilees but more importantly her children’s rite of passage. At home I found a mug commemorating the inauguration at Caernarvon Castle of the Prince of Wales in 1969 by Delphine pottery, and royal weddings have generated a wide variety from Princess Anne through to that of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (with Meghan and Harry to come pretty imminently). The 1981 wedding of Charles and Diana generated a plethora of mugs, some pretty dire, but one in bone china by, say, Caverswall sold for a bit over a fiver
in 1981 would now fetch £25 or even a tad more, for Caverswall is a good maker, whereas mugs by less well regarded firms go for prices nearer £8-12. Of course, here in Derbyshire, it is often worth going for Royal Crown Derby examples. They are very good quality, for which initially one would pay a great deal comparatively, but second had examples in good condition with their boxes are still highly collectible, although if you bought one new, it will take a few decades to make your money back.

Naples to Rome
All holidays have to come to an end but we had one last card up our sleeves. We had flown out to Naples but had booked our return flights from Rome.
34 | CountryImagesMagazine.co.uk
Now being a bounder for adventure I hadn’t quite factored in the distance from Castellabate to Rome (348km) as I had been carried away by visiting the south, but all was not lost, as using the motorways would only take three and a half hours with a coffee break. At this point it was suggested that if we set off early we could pull in a trip to Herculaneum, just south of Naples, before continuing on to Rome for our overnight stay. I’m still mystified by speed limits in Italy but worked out that 150 Km/h is pretty quick and so we did well with time! To say we crammed a lot into these last two days is an understatement. Arriving at Herculaneum before lunch, and being in a rush, we started our tour the wrong way round but stuck at it and did all the numbers in reverse order.
Left: The Trevi Fountain, Rome. Above: Part of the excavated Herculaneum. Below, left to right: The statue of Marcus Nonius Balbus and 3 photos of the extensive excavations. Herculaneum, destroyed when Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, is now a World Heritage Site. Having now visited both Pompei and Herculaneum, I feel that the latter, though less well known is better preserved. Mosaics floors and wall art, timber structured buildings complete with roofs, beds and doors are all in a remarkable state of preservation. You have to get your head round the proximity of Herculaneum to the sea to understand why more than 400 cowering skeletons were discovered in 1981 under old arched boat buildings down by what was once the seashore. The larva deposit that covered Herculaneum differed from the ash that covered Pompei leading to many things surviving intact there. A mix of ash and hot gases, hit the mostly evacuated town of Herculaneum at speeds of 100Mph. Six more flows and surges buried the buildings, causing small damage in some areas and preserving structures, objects and victims almost intact. Other areas suffered significant damage with walls being smashed
and columns torn away and in some instances being moved huge distances including the marble statue of Herculaneum’s patron, Marcus Nonius Balbus, being found in two pieces –with head and torso separated. The partially repaired statue now stands in front of the Basilica. Excavation of the site began in the early 1700’s but took a back seat whilst it was found that Pompei was much easier to excavate. When we visited Pompei years ago we had a tour guide and I would recommend doing the same when visiting Herculaneum. As we hadn’t booked one we had to eavesdrop on other tours. Not understanding Chinese, Russian, Swedish and many I couldn’t identify, didn’t help much so I was at a terrible disadvantage, not helped by going the wrong way round too! We didn’t really do this fascinating site much justice as a long hot journey

to our hotel just off Via Assisi, not far from The Appian Way in Rome beckoned. A much needed shower, dinner, and a Peroni in the bar ensued as we planned which sights we could pull in before our 7pm flight the next day and then it was lights out. The Trevi fountain for the grandchildren was chosen first (one having to be hauled out because his 5 year old brother, wreaked revenge for earlier holiday misgivings, and shoved him in!) He was rescued before the police got there. It’s sacred you see and you can’t go in. There is a lot of begging on the streets here. One man was so invalided that the only way he could move about was by sitting on a skateboard and using extremely deformed hands to propel him around. On a trip to Egypt we saw worse suffering with some of it inflicted by parents on their children to cause sympathetic people to donate spare cash. What awful times we live in when we have to resort to this. Compared to Paestum and Herculaneum the Trevi Fountain is new! Built in the 1700’s and cramped in by buildings now used as shops to extract money from tourists who jostle to get to the front to get a picture. The ones in the brochure where there isn’t a soul around is far better unless you want a selfie of course. But I didn’t because I know what I look like! I wasn’t as impressed with the Trevi as I should apparently have been. Ah well there’s no accounting for taste. I prefer Aber Falls! We made our way to the Pantheon in Piazza della Rotonda. One of Rome’s best preserved and visited buildings and one of the most recent completed by Hadrian around 126AD. Factoring in queueing time is important and wearing the right clothes too. Ladies with bare shoulders aren’t allowed and one of our party had to wait outside for a jumper swap. “It’s a religious building’ the security man armed with a gun explained in an annoyed voice.
The interior dome of The Pantheon
The Pantheon is famous amongst other things for its hole in the roof. Let’s face it, not many people invite you round to look at the hole in their roof ! I suggested that a big a cork could fix it. But this is a hole with a difference, you do come out with neck ache as you marvel at the superb architectural 142 feet high structure which is still the worlds largest unreinforced concrete dome. Amazing for a 2,000 year old building. The famous painters Raphael and Annibale Carracci, the composer Arcangelo Corelli, and architect Baldassare Peruz are all buried here along with kings and queens. I had read that Voltaire was buried here but that’s an easy mistake to make as he’s buried at The Pantheon in Paris. Changes over the years has seen parts of the building swallowed up by surrounding structures with some of the marble removed and the tops of two pillars are now in the British Museum. We just have to nick stuff don’t we? I suppose they fit snugly with the Elgin marbles. I used to get cross at school when kids used to pinch mine too! Sightseeing over and it was time to hop on the bus. Tickets are for sale in various places if you can find them. I’ve no idea how the drivers know who has paid or who has not it’s so haphazard. I suppose in this country with only half a dozen people on the bus it’s easy to spot a dodger, but a crammed bus with people hanging on everywhere it must be a challenge. Our return flight was from Rome’s Fiumicino airport, much smaller and far less hassle. The final sting in the tail came when, looking at my car hire details it stated that I was dropping the car off at Ciampino airport but the Hertz man at Fiumicino never said a word. Writing this article has made my mind up – I’m going back later this year with just a few tweaks. GP

Part Four:
Finding Your Own Voice by: Manuel Delaflor
We live immersed in a flood of images Manuel Delaflor is a Visual Artist, currently living in Chesterfield. He has won several contests, and has exhibited his work in various countries in Europe and the Americas. Currently, he is available for portrait and corporate photography and he is also giving photography workshops in the Peak District and in London. To know more or to book an appointment write to: manuel@manueldelaflor.com .
Never before like today, have we been surrounded by millions of images. Did you know that more than 100 million photographs are being uploaded JUST to Instagram every day? And, as you know, there are many more websites and social media destinations where users upload their images. And so, amongst this ocean of photographs... can we still have a voice? Do we still have something to say? The answer is a loud YES! Why? Simple; Nobody else in the planet is you. Nobody else in the planet sees what you see. Sure, they might see similar things, especially if they are close to you, but they will never see the world through your eyes. But how to do it? Probably you are thinking that you need to be able to express your own point of view in a way that is interesting to others? Well, I have a small confession to make. But let me be clear about this right away. If you think you have to force yourself in to making something that will look interesting TO OTHERS; you are mistaken. This is what I did when I started in the photography business. I wanted others to feel impressed about my work. I was dissatisfied, and stressed.
42 | CountryImagesMagazine.co.uk
Later in life I realised that others can only see what they are (what they have inside) and so I understood that it’s not the others I need to please, but myself. ONLY MYSELF. Trust me on this one, if you can impress yourself (by a photo that you like, it doesn’t matter if you think it is good or not, trust your feelings), you will find others who will be impressed too, and will love what you do. That’s just human nature. We all see differently, think differently, feel differently, and no matter what you do, some people will love it, and some will hate it (most, will find it irrelevant, but don’t worry about that).
Okay. Lets get in to it. These are the elements combined to create your own style: 1) Personality: Your personality is the most important factor in the style you will develop. Who are you? What moves you? What makes you smile? What moves you enough for you to make an effort? Long walks? People? Animals? Nature? Architecture? Music? We are naturally passionate about things that move us.
In a way, you’re reading this because you have been moved by something else in a way that it made you attempt to capture it.
are SIMILAR to what others do. There is always something that makes them stand out.
So, ask yourself, as often as you can:
• Use social networks that encourage inspiration. A good example of this is Pinterest.
a) Why do I want to capture this? What is the real reason? Is it because it’s beautiful? Interesting? Rare? Personal reasons? (Capturing memories for your family). b) What do I want to say or transmit with my photographs?
• Museums! When was the last time that you visited an art gallery or a museum?
Okay. Everything sounds interesting; but...
As I often say, a photograph is a return ticket to a moment otherwise gone. What do you want to say with that instant in time that you captured? The answers are very personal (there is no right or wrong here) and they will help you find your own path. What you put in that frame is part of who you are. And, whatever it is, it doesn’t matter how ‘pretty’ or ‘well made’ or ‘horrible’ or ‘plain’ it is. You should be proud of yourself merely for taking that snapshot out of the world. c) What do you NOT want to say, or what are you NOT interested in? This is also a fantastic way to understand yourself better, by getting rid of what doesn’t represent you, at all. 2) Equipment, technique, light, composition: Know your equipment, its limitations. The type of light you choose can define your work (natural, flashes, study). Make them yours. Become one with them by studying them. If you dominate your tools and master the composition, your style will show by itself ! 3) Post Production: Your photographic style can also become what you want it to be when you post produce your images. This is not always necessary, there are some photographers who like to get their final product right in the camera. Others (like me) use post processing to finish what the camera can’t accomplish. 4) PPPPP... (I will not say what I mean by this at the moment, you have to read to the end of the article to find out I’m afraid) Now, all those are based around you. To work around you and what you are and the means to do it. The second thing you can do to find yourself is find inspiration. Inspiration is an emotional force that is born from within. It’s about looking inside, not outside. Although inspiration comes from the inside, it is quite useful to look for external emotional stimuli. They will help us to unleash a cascade of ideas. To activate it I recommend: • Cinema, series, books and above all talk with people who have a different point of view to yours. • Visit the websites of great photographers. You will find what makes them unique. They are the ones who stand by their own, even when their photos
Still find it complicated? Here goes a trick for starters: Focus only on one idea and make it a project (you can always change it later). When we focus on a concrete project it is easier to understand all its possibilities. We will make the most of it and enjoy it much more. Have faith in what you do, and do not fear criticism, get nurtured by it. Photography is like writing. Knowing the technique will not get you anywhere. If you want to leave your mark, to be an artist, the important thing is not how you write, but having something to say. If everything still fails: Do the following exercises to develop your own style. 1) Define your thematic focus - choose a theme or type of photography in which you want to develop. Work on it, see what others have done with it. 2) List the elements that you don’t like in your own work compared to others. Make a list of those which you have to improve to define your style; Equipment, technique, composition? 3) Critically study the artwork from other artists. This is something we do at some of my workshops. We have a session and the assistants can present the work of someone they admire, and we all comment on it and learn from it. 4) Explore - Try new things, new topics, things you have not done or photographed yet. This will get you out of your comfort zone. And this is WHERE WE GROW. Well that’s all for today. Heavily packed as you can see. I want to finish the present article with another thing I have learnt; From time to time you will create a work that will change the way you understand your art. Open your eyes well to discover the ‘revelation photos’. They are the ones that will guide you to a unique and personal style. Keep an eye on them.

Gardening
eading again my previous gardening articles, February can be a varied month in terms of weather; but usually gives us the first positive signs of spring with daffodils appearing all over the county. The same as last year I’ve done my first gardening talk. It’s been enjoyable and a revelation writing down a ‘story’ of what I do as a plant manager. For 10 years I’ve been doing the ‘Confessions of a Plant Manager’ talk and it’s always a pleasure to get another ‘chapter’ added. I’m looking forward to starting properly on my allotment this month; having acquired it late on in the season last year. The mild weather will hopefully prompt the beginning of the gardening season sooner rather than last year’s late start.
General Garden Maintenance • When you do plant any new shrubs or trees, remember to place rabbit guards around them to prevent damage to bark. • Fix nesting boxes to any suitable surface. Check bird feeders and fill if needed. • Again top up bird baths with fresh water and defrost with warm water on frosty days. • Clear away old leaves in borders and around ponds. Take out any leaves or plant debris that has fallen into the pond and compost them. • Dig over borders and remove and thin out congested herbaceous beds. • Trim back any tatty looking autumn-flowering heathers. • Spread a good layer of home-made or nursery bought compost around established roses and shrubs. • Look out for weed seedlings appearing; keep under control with regular hand weeding or hoeing. • Look for ‘multi-buy’ bargains on compost at nurseries or garden centres. Buy cheaply now to last the spring and summer season. • Last chance this month to plant bare root hedging.
In the Allotment or Vegetable Patch • Finish winter pruning fruit trees and soft fruit if not already done so. And paint any cuts with a pruning sealing compound. • Buy onion and shallot sets and seed potatoes now. Apply a potato fertilizer to the planting area if it needs it. • The frosts may have done this but use a winter-on fruit tree wash (before they come into leaf) to kill any over-wintering aphid eggs. • Sow carrots, parsnips, peas and broad beans outside in soil that has been warmed by covering with sheets of polythene or cloches. • Last chance to plant bare-root raspberry canes. • Cut down autumn-fruiting raspberry canes to soil level.
In the Greenhouse • Buy and plant summer flowering bulbs in pots. Bringing pots of spring flowering bulbs into the greenhouse will promote flowering. • Sow summer bedding seed such as lobelia, ageratum, antirrhinum, verbena and begonia now. • Vegetable crops to sow in a heated propagator should be tomatoes, onions, celery, peppers and aubergines. 46 | CountryImagesMagazine.co.uk
• Vegetable crops to sow without heat, ready to plant later outside, are Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, onion, leeks and spring cabbage. • Check your greenhouse for any winter damage and repair. If there are any empty places in the garden try these: Camellia : Technically some camellia varieties start to flower around Christmas time but the majority look their best at this time of year.

Ericaceous compost loving camellias have an unfair reputation of being difficult to grow, this is a shame as with good preparation and a little care camellias are as easy to grow as most other garden shrubs. Camellias need shelter – but not too much if they are to thrive. An area in dappled shade, under trees is ideal, but they will tolerate a more open position if shaded for part of the day. A west-facing aspect is perfect as strong early morning sun on frosted flower buds can cause them to thaw too quickly and drop off.

In very exposed gardens, camellias are best fan-trained on a west or southfacing wall. Ideal for container growing most people would find a place for a camellia in their garden, with so many varieties it is hard to recommend a single variety – but Margaret Davis (pink/white bi-colour), Debbie (double pink) and Lady Campbell (double red) are my favourites. Jasminum nudiflorum: ‘Winter Jasmine’ One of the best loved Winter shrubs, bright yellow round flowers from the beginning of January to the end of February. This jasmine does not twine like the Summer Jasmine but does need to be trained up a wall or fence. Likes a full sun or partial shade position in well drained to heavy clay – prune often to prevent bare patches. Jasminum nudiflorum has the RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Erica darleyensis : When customers come into the nursery and ask me for plants to brighten up the garden or liven up newly planted containers the first thing I recommend are winter heathers, they are easy to grow, cheap
and give instant colour. Plant around any garden shrubs in groups of 3 to produce a fantastic show all winter long with carpets of white, pink or red some varieties have bright golden foliage which contrast with deep green evergreen plants – remember to leave space for summer flowering heathers!

Foraged Food by local photographer Dave Clay
From Wayside and Woodland
Our ancestors were masters of making the most of nature’s larder, a talent we have sadly mostly lost in this age of fast food and convenience stores. They had learned how to live in harmony with their surroundings and gathered the seasonal fare at their disposal. We are now into winter, a time of year when the trees have lost their leaves and there is not a lot growing in the hedgerows but there are still things that can be found and put to good use. One note of caution… When foraging from the wild, try to avoid taking from roadside verges that may be polluted by passing traffic, also, avoid anything from areas where people have exercised their pets and if you are not sure what it is DON’T pick it. Hairy Bittercress: Cardamine hirsuta, also called Bittercress and Land-cress A common garden “weed”, though I would dispute the term, as a “weed” is just a wild plant growing in the wrong place. This is a member of the brassica family, a crucifer related to mustard. It grows from a small rosette in freshly disturbed soil, its small white flowers have four petals in a crucifix shape and are bourne at the top of long thin stems. The developing seed pods are long and thin containing many seeds. It seeds itself freely and I find it coming up all over the garden. Bittercress has a peppery taste, and contains vitamins A and C. Remove the roots and rinse under the tap, it can then be added to sandwiches as you would add watercress. It can also be blended with pine nuts, olive oil, parmesan and garlic to make a pesto
Wild Garlic
Garlic mustard: Jack by the hedge, hedge garlic - Alliaria petiola Another cruciferous plant, a native biennial and food plant for the Orange tip butterfly, one of the heralds of spring. I have this growing in the hedge bottom in the garden, an attempt to encourage the Orange tip to breed there. The leaves when crushed give off the faint aroma of garlic and can be used in salads or to give flavouring to sauces. You don’t need many seeds of this to ensure a constant supply in your own garden, it grows easily . Wild garlic or Ramsons - Allium ursinum One cannot fail to identify this plant when it appears in the spring as it imparts an overwhelming aroma of garlic. All parts of the plant are edible, but do not confuse it with lily of the valley which is definitely NOT edible . If it smells of garlic, it will be garlic. Ramsons grow in woodland and damp areas and can appear in large swathes, putting on quite a display. The strong garlic smell will fade once picked and will not overpower any dishes you use it in. It can be used in salads or as flavouring in soups. The flowers can be used to garnish dishes and the leaves can be used in much the same way as Bittercress to blitz up a pesto. Please only take
Rose Hips Bittercress
as much as you need when picking leaves and remember that it is an offence to dig any plant up that you may come across. Again you could grow this from collected seed in your garden but it takes a while to establish a large patch. Rose Hips - Rosa canina / Rosa rubiginosa (Dog rose / Sweet briar rose) The hips of the wild dog rose and sweet briar rose contain 20 times more vitamin C than oranges. Studies show that rose hip may also help relieve symptoms of osteoarthritis. Best picked in late autumn or early winter when the frost has got to them (this helps break down the plant cells and soften the fruit), they can be used to make rose hip syrup which I fondly remember from my childhood. Every winter I would be given rose hip syrup to ward off colds, the hips also produce a very nice wine. Finally… A few more leaves that can be used in salads providing vital vitamins during the early months of the year, daisy, dandelion (though not to every ones’ taste as they are rather bitter), chickweed, good King Henry and fat hen. A lot of useful plants have names that go back centuries and show that our more recent antecedents were a deal more informed than we sadly are. If you have been inspired to find out more, there is plenty of information to be found in the many books that have been written on the subject and on the internet …happy hunting! “Whatever job I’ve done I’ve tried to do something different.” - Stephen Tompkinson
CountryImagesMagazine.co.uk | 51
T
he last time Stephen Tompkinson was in Nottingham he was completely starkers in the Old Market Square. When he returns at the end of April he’s promising to keep his clothes on: “I think once is definitely enough,” he maintains.
Now the star of TV programmes such as Ballykissangel, Wild At Heart and DCI Banks, Stephen is returning to Nottingham in Yasmin Reza’s comedy Art.
By Steve Orme
On that occasion, in 2013, he was filming the BBC One series Truckers, a drama that focused on the lives of a firm of Nottingham-based lorry drivers. His character, Malachi Davies, went through a midlife crisis and ended up naked on top of a 40-tonne truck. “You saw quite a lot of me then! That was a Father’s Day I shall never forget,” says Stephen. “The place was absolutely packed.” The series was written by Nottinghamshire author Billy Ivory who Stephen rates very highly. “Billy is such a great writer the crowd absolutely behaved themselves and really loved the dialogue that I was saying. That’s testament to how good a writer Billy is.” Now the star of TV programmes such as Ballykissangel, Wild At Heart and DCI Banks, Stephen is returning to Nottingham in Yasmin Reza’s comedy Art. Some people may think it strange that an actor who has played such gritty characters on the small screen is appearing in a comedy. They forget that Stephen played the ambitious but unethical reporter Damien Day in the satirical comedy Drop The Dead Donkey for which he won best TV comedy actor at the 1994 British Comedy Awards. And for the past four years he has appeared in Trollied, the Sky TV comedy set in a supermarket. Art has been described as “one of the most successful comedies ever”. It has attracted huge audiences worldwide for more than 20 years. Stephen will team up with suave Nigel Havers and character actor Denis Lawson for the four-month tour. It will be déjà vu for Stephen who appeared in Art 18 years ago. “I made my West End debut in it at Wyndham’s Theatre alongside Michael French and James Fleet. So when the producer rang up and asked if I would be interested in having another crack at it, I leapt at the opportunity. “I think the play’s so wonderful. I know Nigel and Denis and I thought we could have a lot of fun. Touring is a lovely way to see the country as well. It’s
52 | CountryImagesMagazine.co.uk
been a while since I’ve done that, so I’m very excited.” Stephen will again be playing Ivan just as he did at Wyndham’s Theatre: “It’ll be interesting to see what I’ve learned and what feels different 18 years on. It’s like going back to a good book – sometimes you find more about a character because you’ve experienced more yourself.” Stephen has never appeared alongside Nigel Havers before – but he and Denis Lawson were both in the 2003 ITV mini-series Lucky Jim, based on the Kingsley Amis novel. Stephen is also looking forward to being at the Theatre Royal again. His last visit was in The Play What I Wrote, about Eric Morecambe and Ernie Wise. “I’ve always had very fond memories of Nottingham. My first TV series was in Nottingham called Tales of Sherwood Forest with the late, great Pete Postlethwaite.” Stephen was also in the final episode of Boon, the crime drama starring Michael Elphick which ran from 1986 until 1995. Four of the seven series were filmed in Nottingham. Now Stephen is concentrating on Art. He actually enjoys touring: “It’s a great opportunity to revisit places you haven’t seen for a long time. The lovely thing about Art is it’s 90 minutes straight through with no interval, so you get quite a bit of time off and you can do a little bit of exploring and see how places have changed.” Stephen Paul Tompkinson was born on 15 October 1965 at Stockton-on-Tees, County Durham. There was no one in his family with acting experience; Stephen began to get the acting bug while he was at school. “I had a couple of special teachers who were prepared to stay behind, put plays on and harness the energy and imagination that kids have. It was a real treat. I had a very big, close family and used to see the way they would react to people like Morecambe and Wise and Laurel and Hardy, and I wanted to emulate that.”
After graduating from London’s Central School of Speech and Drama, he soon began to pick up work. He became a member of the BBC's Radio Drama Company and shortly afterwards started to get television roles. Now he is known for playing Father Peter Clifford in Ballykissangel, Danny Trevanion in Wild At Heart and the stubborn title character in DCI Banks. Stephen believes that one of the most fortunate things about his career is that he has not become stereotyped. “Whatever job I’ve done I’ve tried to do something different. I still love doing radio where I first started and if I haven’t done theatre for a while I get very itchy to be back on stage. As long as I’m enjoying the variety, then I’m never going to get bored and hopefully that will transfer to the audience. “That was the strange plan I had at drama school but it seems to have come to fruition. I’m more than happy with the way things have gone.” ITV has announced that there will be no more episodes of DCI Banks which Stephen feels is a great shame. “We had a good six years of it. We did very well and I think the main person to thank for that is Peter Robinson who came up with the original novels. Banks is still going in book form but sadly ITV decided they’d had enough of him. “I get a lot of letters from America, Australia and all round Europe from people who still enjoy it very much, so there’s life in the grumpy old detective yet.” Stephen says the job he is still most proud of was the film Brassed Off, the 1996 depiction of the troubles faced by a colliery brass band after the closure of their pit. “If you’ll forgive the pun it still strikes a chord with a lot of people. The more time goes on the more shameful the government’s actions were in dismantling that industry and the effects that it had. They’re still felt today.” Stephen had a busy time up to Christmas with
theatre and television appearances, although he managed to get some time off to spend with his family. Twice divorced, Stephen has lived for more than ten years with Elaine Young and has a daughter Daisy by his second wife. This year is already shaping up to be busy. Stephen will soon be seen in a BBC six-part series called The Split which explores divorce through the lens of a family of women lawyers. He will be appearing in Art until June when he’s hoping for a bit of a rest. It’s a hectic schedule, so what’s driving him on? “I love the fact that people come to the theatre wanting to be transported somewhere for a couple of hours. It’s such a unique shared experience, especially when you’re doing a comedy and you get that immediate laughter from an audience. It’s a wonderful feeling.” * Art will be at the Theatre Royal, Nottingham from 30 April until 5 May.
“I’ve always had very fond memories of Nottingham. My first TV series was in Nottingham called Tales of Sherwood Forest with the late, great Pete Postlethwaite.”

Viator’s Bridge and the Dove Holes
This short walk can be fitted in with a trip exploring more of Dovedale or simply as a day out combined with lunch at one of the hospitable pubs in villages round and about the valley.
It is over 300 years since Izaak Walton fished in the pure waters of the river Dove along with his impecunious friend Charles Cotton of Beresford Hall, near Hartington. Apart from light traffic along the short stretch of modern road through Milldale, the two friends would easily recognise this part of the dale. Dovedale and its famous trout stream have changed little since Walton and Cotton spent time along its banks, angling and philosophising. Walton referred to the Dove as being ‘The finest river that I ever saw and the fullest of fish’; a sentiment true even today. Many of the houses in this tiny hamlet are founded on dwellings that would have been standing in Walton and Cotton’s time. The village takes its name from two mills that once provided employment for people living there; remnants of both mills remain, still capable of taking power from the river. Lode Mill is higher up the valley; converted into a barn, it once ground and separated lead ore from the parent limestone. The mill closest to the village is Ochre Mill; powered by water from the leat which

begins a few yards upstream of Viator’s Bridge, is also recognisable as a barn, but in its day it produced powder for making red lead paint. In his angling treatise The Compleat Angler, Izaak Walton refers to himself as ‘Viator’ (traveller), and addresses Cotton as ‘Piscator’. (angler). In the book Walton expresses amazement at the narrowness of the bridge which bears his nom-de-plume, ‘Viator’. The route followed by this walk follows the river downstream from Viator’s Bridge as far as the curious rock formation known as Dove Holes. A secluded dry dale to the left and a few yards prior to the holes, climbs up to Hanson Grange Farm where the walk joins an ancient packhorse way back down to Milldale.
2½miles (4km) of valley walking, with one steep climb through woodland beneath The Nabs. Level farm tracks followed by a narrow packhorse track back down to Milldale. Recommended map. Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 scale Outdoor Leisure Sheet 24; The White Peak Area. Car Park. About a quarter mile above the village, west along Hope Dale (free). Refreshments: a cottage in the centre of Milldale serves light refreshments over a half-door. Pubs in several nearby villages.

The Walk with Rambler
• From the car park walk down to the river and cross narrow Viator’s Bridge. Turn right to follow the riverside path for a little under a mile. The thin alkaline soil on the craggy valley sides, supports many semi-alpine plants such as thyme and dwarf cranesbill. • Turn left at the finger post pointing to Alsopen-le Dale and climb the tree-lined dry dale and go beneath the line of rocky crags known as The Nabs guarding the dale’s exit. • Before turning left uphill, walk forwards for about 80yards to visit Dove Holes. These massive water-worn holes appear, at first glance to be the start of an extensive cave system but are, in fact only about 20ft (6m) deep. This is a good vantage point for views up and down the dale. • Return to the finger post and turn right to rejoin the described walk. • Turn left though a stile at the dale head and follow a series of stiles leading to the right of Hanson Grange Farm. Join its exit lane about 100yds (91m) beyond the farm. Hanson Grange Farm. There were several extensive monastic sheep walks in the area, until the Dissolution. Hanson Grange was part of one. The farm house looks Jacobean, but is probably built on older foundations.
Dove Holes
• At the end of the partly walled section of the farm lane, turn left as indicated by a signpost close to an underground reservoir. Follow the sign’s direction across a series of fields, downhill towards Milldale. • Zigzag downhill on the ancient packhorse way back into Milldale. The George at nearby Alstonfield is a popular pub for travellers, either by car, on foot, riding or pedalling. The oldest relic in Alstonfield Church is the economically worded inscription on the double decker pulpit which states: ‘Be faithful and etc., and I will give thee a crown etc.’ No doubt the carpenter was in a hurry when he carved those words!

Summer Holiday 1963. The year Beatlemania was born, the Profumo affair scandalised Britain and preceded the resignation of Harold Macmillan, Ronnie Biggs, Buster Edwards and co. snatched £2.6m cash from the London to Glasgow mail train, the ‘Britain in Bloom’ campaign began, the US trounced ‘Great Britain’ 23-9 in the Ryder Cup .... and Cliff Richard and the Shadows took off on a jaunt across Europe in a Routemaster bus in the film ‘Summer Holiday’. The film is now a feel-good stage musical in Michael Gyngell and Mark Haddigan’s adaptation, with Don and his fellow London Transport bus mechanics journeying through Paris, the Alps, Italy and then Greece, along the way picking up three young girls in a clapped-out Morris Minor and a young American pop star on the run from her domineering mother, and all to the strains of a hit-filled score featuring In the Country, Summer Holiday, I Could Easily Fall in Love with You, Bachelor Boy, Move It, Living Doll, The Young Ones and On the Beach. The great outdoors
With outdoor holidays firmly on the horizon the big question to ask is Caravan or Motorhome? There are fors and againsts for both. With a motorhome you can easily drive from place to place for a one or two night stay here and there. However that can be accomplished with a caravan if you’re a practical organised person, admittedly it takes a little longer than just reversing a motorhome into a space but the basic connection principles are the same. You can pitch up a caravan and leave it in place whilst you wander around The Duke of York near Flagg is a family run, traditional pub with Dining Room and a campsite with stunning views. All pitches have electric/water. The shop stocks anything from eggs to kitchen roll. This year sees 400 years of Licensees here and to help celebrate we are holding two Beer Festivals with Live Music over the Late May and August Bank Holidays. (Pitches are still available for both weekends.) We will also be holding monthly Quizzes and other Events throughout the year. The Duke of York Campsite
is on the A515, adjacent to the Duke of York pub and restaurant, six miles from Buxton and Bakewell, and 12 from Ashbourne. The site is a convenient base for the Peak District, and there’s easy access to the Tissington and High Peak Trails. Pitches all have spectacular views over the Peak District and beyond. The modern amenities block comes with pot-washing facilities, toilets and free hot showers. Underfloor heating is also provided. The site is popular in all seasons with families, couples, singles and groups who want to get away, but with the comfort of a pub and restaurant on the doorstep. Well behaved dogs on leads are welcome.

the area. Motorhomes have to come with you unless you tow a small ‘run around’ vehicle, or bikes. Reversing a caravan is quite a skill whereas a motorhome is easier but requires the same observation skills . Things have become a little easier since caravans have been fitted with remote control motormovers. You just pull up, unhitch the caravan and by using the remote control, position your caravan in the right spot. Space in both caravan and motorhome is again down to what you need. The caravan doesn’t have all the paraphenalia needed to actually drive the vehicle (steering wheel, gearstick etc) but then again the motorhome generally gives you two very comfortable armchair like seats. The best way to choose is not to have pre-conceived ideas but to take a look at both motorhome and caravan and see which you feel comfortable with. Whichever mode of mobile home you pick, there’s a tremendous choice of sites to stay at around this country and the continent. You can find sites that are purely a grassy field with a waste disposal area, to award winning sites that offer five star quality. Budgets and your needs can generally dictate the one you go for.
Glossop Caravans break new frontiers with a luxury range, special edition motorhome Superb quality at very competitive prices was assured as Glossop Caravans launched its first-ever range of Special Edition motorhomes at The Caravan & Motorhome Show in January, Customer demand has persuaded the family-run company to extend long-established relationships with leading UK manufacturers Elddis and Swift to create a luxuriously-appointed selection to complement its popular Special Edition Caravans. Models from the brand new Elddis Chatsworth and Swift Celebration ranges - which include two-berth to sixberth options – were on show alongside the company’s Special Edition 2018 Coachman Festival, Elddis Chatsworth and Swift Celebration. “We’ve been working in close partnership with the UK’s top three manufacturers to create high-specification caravans offering unbeatable value for money for the past 25 years - and they’ve never been more popular,” said Stan and Brian Laing, Joint Managing Directors, Glossop Caravans. Over the past few years, they’ve won a string of prestigious awards for their high standards of design and workmanship, which have raised the bar and also proved a huge hit with our customers. Their positive feedback has persuaded us to take the plunge and work with both Elddis and Swift to offer the same top quality features and attention to detail at competitive prices. Motorhomes are becoming increasingly popular as more and more people discover the freedom and flexibility they can bring to their leisure time . The range of Special Edition caravans has been extended with the Swift Celebrate based on the UKs best selling caravan, the Sprite. Fans of the company’s Special Editions will appreciate the Swift Celebration’s chic new look - grey and gold upholstery and geometric-patterned curtains and cushions - plus a new 2018 Elddis Chatsworth option, the 462 lightweight two-berth. Customers keen to find out more about the Special Edition ranges are able to browse details online at www.glossopcaravans.co.uk; printed brochures are also available.

Sinfonia Viva Appoints New Principal Conductor Dutch conductor Frank Zielhorst has been appointed as Principal Conductor of Sinfonia Viva - the East Midlands’ professional orchestra, based in Derby, which has celebrated its 35th anniversary this year. Mr Zielhorst said he was relishing to take up the role with Sinfonia Viva and to programme a ‘menu of delights’ for orchestral concerts around the region. “I worked with the orchestra as guest conductor both at Derby Cathedral and at Derby Theatre for the ‘Mechanical Advantage’ education project performance in 2017 and was very impressed both with the quality of work and with the reception from the Derby audiences. “Sinfonia Viva is one of the top regional orchestras with an amazing reputation. It is a multi-talented orchestra with an excellent band of players, incredible versatility and
a great management team to support the activities. “Taking on the role as Principal Conductor gives me the opportunity to develop my artistic vision and to embed Viva even further into the artistic fabric of the city and region. The orchestra has a packed programme of high quality education and outreach work for which it has a well-deserved national reputation. “My focus as Principal Conductor is to raise the identity of the orchestra on the concert platform to the highest possible level whilst nurturing that well-earned reputation for imaginative creative projects. Mr Zielhorst (32), who takes over the baton from Duncan Ward, will make his debut under his new role in February at the culmination performance of the Orchestra’s education Spring residency. This will be followed by a concert at Derby Cathedral in March.
Moscow City Ballet Moscow City Ballet returns to the Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham with two stunning ballets, each presented in classic Russian style with full orchestra.
Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet is the perfect marriage of a powerful dramatic musical score with a passionate love story – every dancer’s dream. The choreography, interpretation and virtuoso performances beautifully complement the world’s most famous tragic love story and iconic musical score. For many, the stirring sounds of Dance of the Knights, commonly known as Montagues and Capulets, will be recognizable as the theme tune to BBC TV’s The Apprentice. The enchanting and romantic story of The Sleeping Beauty inspired Tchaikovsky to write some of his most glorious music, and the ballet has captivated audiences for well over a century. Featuring the delicate Princess Aurora, her gallant Prince, wicked Carabosse, the beautiful Lilac Fairy and a host of fairy-tale characters, this truly magical production showcases the company’s exquisite dramatic and lyrical talents. Brimming with some of Russia’s best young dancers, outstanding principals, stunning soloists and a sublime corps de ballet, these stand-out performances by the Moscow City Ballet dancers never fail to add that magical ingredient of Russian soul.

Dining Out
The M Dog at Pentrich
any years ago, before man had walked on the moon or The Beatles had got together, one of the simple highlights of a warm summer Sunday evening was to walk with my brother and our parents to The Dog at Pentrich. Our route was via Lowes Hill, Hammersmith, Asher Fields (no A38 in those days) and in to the village. The stroll was timed to put us outside The Dog at precisely 7pm; the time local licensing laws permitted public houses to open on Sunday evenings. Too young to enter the pub, me and my brother would sit outside on a low wall, bottle of Vimto in one hand and a bag of crisps in the other.
Our most recent evening visit to the Dog Inn was not going to be for Vimto and crisps but to discover what the new chef, Adam, was offering on the completely re-styled menu. The Dog Inn has changed dramatically over the years; it’s larger; the main extension houses the dining area and has a contemporary interior but still retains many of its period features. It also boasts a wood-burning stove. A welcome site on a cold January night. Jane who, from the start of the New Year, has taken over running the front of house met us. This is a family affair; Jane along with her husband Graham run the bar and restaurant and Chef Adam is their son. Adam has worked in several well-known local restaurants and, until returning to Pentrich, was head chef at one of Sheffield’s top eateries. Some things change for the better and it was a delight to see the array of gins that are now on offer from ‘Bathtub’ through to ‘Rhubarb and Ginger’. Sue ordered a G&T made with the latter. It was served in a long stemmed copa glass which is shaped to enhance the botanicals in the gin. And some things don’t change; I ordered a pint of good old-fashioned Bass and it didn’t fail to delight. We sat and chatted in the cosy bar till our table was ready. Sue started with the soup of the day; a silky, smooth comforting leek and potato with house-baked focaccia; a pillow of soft dough laced through with olive oil infused sundried tomatoes. I chose the salt and chilli squid with a toasted sesame Asian style ketchup. Adam had made a change to the menu and the salad part of the dish was mostly fine strands of mooli. This cool, mild radish provided a counterpoint to the tempura batter on the squid and the hint of mild chilli in the ketchup. 64 | CountryImagesMagazine.co.uk
This is an ever-evolving menu as I witnessed when my main arrived with spinach; a welcome addition to the rich flavour of the slow cooked marinated blade of beef and the refreshing savoury note of the smooth celeriac fondant. Set on a bed of tangy white onion purée it was accompanied by sliced chestnut mushrooms and just the right amount of deep, dark real ale sauce. A salty note was provided by the crispy cooked pancetta. The plating was thoughtfully balanced and presented a visual feast. For her main Sue chose an 8oz rump steak with a peppercorn and whisky sauce; if there is a grill section to any menu it will always be her first choice. All the steaks are served with, chunky chips, Portobello mushroom, confit tomato, beer battered onion rings and a watercress salad. The steak was grilled beautifully; just the right amount of charring on the outside and still pink on the inside. Throughout the meal we never reached for any extra seasoning. After our unhurried starter and main we had a little room left for desserts; Sue chose the ice cream and I chose the lemon parfait. The ice cream was a trio of flavours, decorated with shards of French meringue, and served with raspberries, blueberries and a buttery, homemade shortbread biscuit. The parfait was served with sherbet, lemon curd and toasted almonds and again decorated with the French meringue. The Dog has a varied and quite extensive bar snacks and meals menu, served till 3pm in the afternoon and 9pm in the evening, which we will be returning to try. There are around 30 wines to choose from ranging from easily affordable whites and reds to some special occasion champagnes. But I still have a soft spot for those warm summer evenings of the late 1950s with a bottle of Vimto.

t Horsley Lodge, the Head Chef David Smith, has added a European element to the new season’s menu. Gone are the more elaborate dishes, as the menu has become an all day offering of classic English meals, steaks, burgers, with now tapas, and thanks to the installation of an authentic pizza oven, a Pizza Menu! At the bar, local real ales, five draught lagers including three from Spain and Italy add to the Continental feel and a wine list with “just nice decent wine” to compliment the food on your plate, or enjoy on its own.

But it’s not just in the restaurant where this new menu is served; “We have a menu on every table: in the bar, club room and lounges too, “explained Tom Williams Horsley Lodge’s Operations Manager,” and we serve all day from 7am for breakfast right through to last bookings in the evening. Plenty of choice from our Drinks Book too with extensive whiskys, gins and rum to try” There will be something for everyone, Horsley Lodge is renowned as a “celebration destination” but with this new menu, it becomes a much more “let’s go to Horsley for a meal”. Dealing with Cat Flu While we are all in the midst of ‘the worst flu season since 2011’, you may have missed your 4-legged friend with the sniffles as well. Cat flu is very similar to the human cold and flu. Although not transmissible between you and your cat, cat flu can spread quickly and leave your cat quite ill.
So what is cat flu? Similarly to the sore throat and runny nose you may be experiencing, cat’s infected with the flu can have symptoms such as; runny eyes, aches, sneezing, coughing, fever and dehydration. As a result, your cat will often not want to eat and will be feeling poorly and lethargic. It is most commonly caused by one of two viruses, feline calicivirus or feline herpes virus. Cat flu is most dangerous in kittens and elderly cats who can be severely infected and even die.
How is cat flu treated?
DERBY & ALLESTREE PRACTICES 134-136 OSMASTON ROAD, DERBY, DE1 2RF TEL: 01332 345119 367A DUFFIELD ROAD, ALLESTREE, DE22 2DN TEL: 01332 55396 WWW.SLVETS.CO.UK bed all day when they have the flu so keep them quiet, warm and away from stress. You can help to nurse your cat by cleaning discharge from their eyes with damp cotton wool and encouraging them to drink. Cats will often turn their nose up at their normal food so try providing something extra tasty and smelly such as pilchards or cooked chicken. Warming their food can often help the smell get through their blocked nose but some cats need hand or syringe feeding. Steam is really good at breaking up mucus so put your cat in the bathroom when running a hot bath or shower.
How can I stop cat flu?
that show symptoms. In multi-cat households it can spread quickly on your hands and clothes and your cat’s bowls, brushes and beds. Unfortunately, like with cold sores in humans, cat flu can infect your cat for life. Some cats become carriers and do not show symptoms but still spread the virus. Other cat’s can show symptoms for life, often this is a mild watery eye or nose but can become more serious during times of stress. If your cat has had flu before then it’s still important to vaccinate them, as they may have only been infected by one of the viruses or strains.
Cat flu can be prevented by keeping your cat upto-date with their vaccinations. If you are unsure if you cat is covered, then just give your vets a call or check their vaccine card. Cat flu can spread easily with direct or close contact between cats so it’s important to try and quarantine any cats
If your cat is showing these signs it is advisable to see your vet. But there’s lots of things you can do to help your feline friend too. As cat flu is often caused by a virus, antibiotics are often not needed. A vet will check your cat over and give the much needed treatments, which could include anti-inflammatories, mucolytics, multivitamins, appetite stimulants and in severe cases cats may need to be placed on a drip. Like you or I, cats will often just want to stay in

TRIED & TESTED ● TRIED & TESTED ● TRIED & TESTED ● TRIED & TESTED ● TRIED & TESTED ● TRIED & TESTED ● TRIED & TESTED Restore and Replenish Face Cream is a natural collagen boosting face cream, it quickly absorbs into my skin which is perfect in the mornings for the school rush before applying my makeup. Over time it aims at fine lines and wrinkles, but even after the first use it gave my skin an instant plump and glow. Great Product! CB
Wonder Eye Cream, I found this cream really soothing which I imagine is from the cucumber oil and witch hazel that it contains. It was soon absorbed and felt lovely and light. A reassuringly gentle eye cream to use. I loved it. JP
Micellar Water has a great pump action dispenser. The product smells lovely and cleansers effortlessly. I’m a big fan of Micellar Water rather than a standard cream cleanser. Love this. VP

Many will have heard of Stephen Glover a writer of travel guides and directories in the first part of the nineteenth century. His magnum opus was to be The History and Gazetteer of the County of Derby (1829 & 1831). This was an ambitious work, overly so in retrospect as only two of the three or four promised volumes appeared. Miraculously, now nearly 200 years old, Glover’s notes for the whole work have survived and are lodged in the Derby Local History Library.
A new book
‘The Glover Notebooks’
has now been published by Stephen Glover’s three-times great grandson (my mother was a Glover) Graeme Webster. Graeme explains to Country Images Magazine how the book came about . “I’ve known about the existence of the Notebooks since a child and resolved to someday exhume and publish them. My wife and I went to the North-East in 1973 and they rested in the Library until the beginning of this century when, fortuitously, I was appointed as an external examiner at the University of Derby. That re-kindled the idea and I made contact with the Library. It was very supportive and I was able, over several visits, to photograph every page of the six manuscript books. Some of those pages were still legible but others have faded or are heavily overwritten with his later additions and crossings out so that reading them was quite difficult. The text is illustrated with pictures cut from magazines of the time; Glover doubtless intending to replace them with specially commissioned etchings in the final publication. His moneyed subscribers also paid for etchings of their houses to be included in the books. Three of these, previously unpublished, have survived in the Glover family and are reproduced where appropriate in the transcription. Even more interesting were his many sketches, especially of church monuments and of armorial bearings, made in the early years of the nineteenth century.
The front and back covers. The front has a picture of Stephen (the only one that seems to exist) made late in life; the back, a flavour of his sketches.
It rapidly became clear that trying to reconstruct the missing parts of the History and Gazetteer was impossible but I resolved to attempt a transcription of the Notebooks. That I did and it seemed for a time that it was going to be published in book-form but, like so many other things, the sharp down-turn in the economy overtook the idea and nothing happened. Just as well because, a decade on, we have been able to do a much better transcription. It was possible to enhance the faint sketches while preserving the Glover, ‘style’. It has also been possible to include many footnotes, expanding on Glover’s often terse remarks and references, bringing major items up-to-date and providing modern measurements. So, at last it is published, all 600 pages of it, in book-form. It’s available from the publishers, Moorleys Print and Publishing, 23 Park Road, Ilkeston, DE7 5DA, for £21. A final note: Because Derby was by far the biggest centre of population in the County and the name appeared near the beginning of the alphabet, Glover went that far in his two published volumes; then stopped. As a result, many towns and villages, Glossop, Ilkeston, Matlock, Repton, Wirksworth, to name but a few, appear only in the Notebooks. Especially interesting are the lists he gives of occupiers of land (ie farmers), inhabitants and their trades or professions. They show how Derbyshire was rapidly changing in the early 19th century from an essentially rural society to an industrial one, with major tourist centres in Buxton, Matlock and the Dales. These lists are invaluable to anyone researching their ancestry giving, as they do, real detail at a time before the first census. The Notebooks also include many detailed accounts and lists of charities. Derbyshire notables, such as Flamstead, and Hutton, have extensive notes regarding their life’s work.
