May, is by my reckoning, the gateway to summer. I seem to feel happier when it arrives. The lighter nights, higher temperatures and the opportunity to do more in the garden has a definite effect on the spirit. This seems to be echoed by our customers who have some mouthwatering deals on offer to brighten up the summer days too. Cooking is still very much to the fore and kitchen companies therefore offer beautifully designed kitchens at affordable prices. The gardening section is full of advice from Mark Smith. He knows what he’s talking about and is worth following. To widen your horizons we dip our toes into an area of Spain that furnished us with a memorable holiday. Local photographer Dave Clay reveals to us the world of the Dragonfly Max, Brian, and Vicky all make their usual major contributions to this months edition. Steve interviews Tommy Cannon.

The Lost Houses

of Derbyshire by Maxwell Craven

Glossop Hall The south East part of the house showing the improved conservatory and John Douglas’s raised roof and low canted bay to the left, from a post-card. [M. Craven]

T

he Glossop Hall that was demolished in 1958-59 was an unlovely house of titanic proportions, once set in a spectacular wooded park. Unlovely it may have been, but it had an interesting history and was itself at least the third house on the site, although it probably included portions of the fabric of at least one of its predecessors.

The manorial estate of Glossop passed at the Dissolution from the Abbey of Basingwerk to the Talbots, Earls of Shrewsbury & Waterford, of whom George, the 6th Earl had the dubious fortune to have married Bess of Hardwick, who spent much of his fortune building prodigy houses like Worksop Manor and Hardwick. At this stage we have no knowledge if there was a manor house at Glossop, especially as all the families mentioned so far were firmly seated elsewhere.

The Lost Houses

of Derbyshire by Maxwell Craven This situation appears to have continued until the death of the 7th Earl of Shrewsbury, who left a crop of daughters but no sons, amongst whom his estates were parcelled out. Much of the Derbyshire land went to Lady Alathea Talbot who in 1606 married Thomas Howard, a grandson of the Attainted 4th Duke of Norfolk, who went by one of his subsidiary titles, the Earl of Arundel, although Charles II made his son Earl of Norfolk, and his grand-son had the Dukedom restored to him by reversal of the Act of Attainder. The couple’s son Henry Frederick Howard, a Catholic, like all his family, was fairly prolific, producing at least five sons, of whom the youngest was Bernard, (1641-1717) who actually lived at Glossop and in all probability built there a new house on rolling parkland west of Old Glossop. From his time there long survived a chimney-piece dated 1672 and a priest’s hole, which survived later rebuilding. His son also Bernard (1674-1713) married a lady with a house situated in a less climatically inclement part of England, and moved out in 1712, settling a lease for life on his cousin Lady Philippa Howard, a daughter of the 6th Duke of Norfolk. This was because her husband, Ralph Standish of Standish, near Wigan, was a younger son and they thus needed a house. Thus the couple with their three sons and three daughters settled at Glossop, but clearly wanted a more modern house, so began to replace or rebuild Bernard Howard’s Jacobean house in 1729-31. Work stopped in the latter year, probably with the house mostly complete, when Lady Philippa died, leaving Ralph with a single surviving child, a daughter, Cecilia, born in 1699 and by this time married to William Towneley of Towneley Hall, near Burnley and living away from home. He continued to live part of the time at the house but on his death in 1755 aged 84, the house and its vast moorland estates reverted to the main Howard line in the person of Henry Howard, (1713-1787) who resumed using the house, but only as a shooting box in the season. This page; top to bottom: Photograph printed from a lantern slide supplied by Richard Keene Ltd of Derby and probably taken in the 1860s. [Derby Museum Trust] Glossop Hall, South front, c. 1890. The two storey part to the right of the new conservatory is a remnant of the 1729 house, complete with bulls eye window, with the 1820 extension to the left. From a post card. [M. Craven] Eighteenth century sketch of Royle Hall as rebuilt by Ralph Standish. [Private collection] 16 | CountryImagesMagazine.co.uk

At this stage, the house itself bore the name Royle Hall after the ancient name of the pastures west and south of the old village on which it had been built. A sketch of it taken in the later 18th century shows a three bay house with a hipped roof, a single bay extension to the south and another to the north, but much lower and probably the small domestic (Catholic) chapel suggests that the house started off as a simple William-and-Mary (that is, rather old fashioned for its date) house of two storeys and attics.

In 1827 the diarist James Butterworth visited the area and wrote: ‘At a small distance from the village stands an ancient building called Royle Hall, but now named Glossop Hall. It serves as a retreat during the shooting season, there being plenty of game here; Round it are planted large firs, and in front a very extensive hill is covered with firs of many years growth, through which are pleasant roads.’ And by the 1780s the house was only permanently inhabited by the rather aristocratic agent Charles Calvert with the estate bailiff Thomas Shaw inhabiting the service wing. Calvert had moved on by 1797, however, when the role was taken over by Matthew Ellison, who first re-named the house Glossop Hall. The Ellisons were a Staffordshire family and Matthew had three sons, one, Francis, adopted, and four daughters. Whilst the eldest, Thomas sired a long line of Glossop solicitors, and Frank founded a mill in the town, later living at Park Hall, Michael succeeded as agent at the Hall and he by his son, Michael Joseph Ellison. Meanwhile, one of the daughters, Mary, had married Joseph Hadfield of Lees Hall nearby and their son was Matthew Ellison Hadfield, of whom more anon.

and Hurst of Sheffield before working for P F Robinson in London. He returned to Sheffield to set up in practice in 1832, taken John Grey Weightman as partner. One of their early works is the parish church at Matlock Bath and another is the Catholic church of All Saints at Glossop for, like their masters, the Ellisons and Hadfields were devout Catholics. Two years later he built the Town Hall, followed by the Market Hall and the handsome railway station with its Howard lion, a number of other commercial buildings and a small number of domestic properties were also designed by him over the years, including his

own residence in the town. Hadfield designed a large number of Catholic churches, too, for Lord Howard was keen to spearhead a great Catholic revival in the vast area of his estate and beyond. To his credit stand St. Charles Borromeo, at Hadfield (1858) – burial place of quite a large number of Lord Howard’s family in the 19th century - two in Manchester (St. Chad, Cheetham Hill of 1847 and St. Mary, Mulberry Street of the following year), and the particularly satisfying St. Mary, Hallam built in 1850. He also designed Salford’s Catholic cathedral and much of the early Victorian commercial heart of

Bernard Edward FitzAlan-Howard was in occasional residence in 1815 when he succeeded a distant cousin as 12th Duke of Norfolk. At first, having inherited the house, he extended and remodelled it to the designs of London based family architect Robert Abraham (17741850). This consisted of extending northwards a further five bays, the extension to include a new, grander, staircase, but it was done in matching style, complete with attic dormers and banding between the storeys and of small limestone ashlars with millstone grit dressings. Abraham also provided a fine new pedimented stable block set around a courtyard, to the west of the house, embellished with a Wren-like tower and walling replete with rusticated piers topped with ball finials. On the Duke’s death in 1842, the estate went to his second son, Lord Edward FitzAlan-Howard, later (1869) created 1st Lord Howard of Glossop. Not satisfied with the house his father had created, he decided to embellish the whole starting in 1850, and this time employing his agent’s cousin, Matthew Ellison Hadfield (18121885) as architect. Hadfield had been articled to Woodhead

Sheffield. To Glossop Hall he added a rather overlarge three storey and three by three bay residential block of the SE angle, and rebuilt the chapel at the NE end in heroic style complete with a space-rocket campanile which looked for all the world as if it had slipped across the Irish sea from somewhere like Tara. His client essentially wanted a lot more than the size, cost or the site of the existing building could allow, and the result was the rambling inchoate house of later years. It was however, set in splendidly designed grounds, almost certainly the work of Edward Milner (1819-1884) mainly re-modelled before the rebuilding of the house. Milner was later to design the park at Buxton. To the east, a series of massive terraces led up to the entrance, whilst the private garden and lawns were to the south, where an impressive conservatory by Messengers of Loughborough was added. Francis, 2nd Lord Howard succeeded in 1883 and about two decades later called in the Artsand-Crafts architect John Douglas of Chester to make alterations on the recommendation of the 1st Duke of Westminster, but the family made increasingly little use of the house, even during the shooting season, after the Great War and when Lord Francis died in 1924, his son and successor (another Bernard) found himself saddled with death duties and decided to sell the house and the 9,110 acre estate.

The immediate Parkland, however, was purchased ‘with rare public spirit’ by the Glossop Borough Council and remains an attractive park (called Manor Park) to this day, having been added to the National Register of Parks and Gardens at Grade II in 2001. The house, not wholly surprisingly in that unoptimistic age, failed to sell and was instead let as a school becoming the Kingsmoor Residential School, moving in at the beginning of May, 1927, and after a period of uncertainty, flourished until the post-war period, when numbers fell and in 1953 the school left the hall and moved to new premises in Marple, Cheshire. Thereafter, no tenant could be found, and the site was eventually sold to a developer, being finally demolished in 1958-59. One of Hadfield’s lodges survives as a house at the top end of Norfolk Street where it meets Talbot Road, and the house site is covered with the 1950s bungalows of Kingsmoor, Park and Hall Closes.

The hub of the home, the heart of the home, whatever you want to call it, a well thought out and planned kitchen is essential to any home.

SUFFOLK BY NEPTUNE Suffolk is a collection that’s known and loved for its simplicity, its less-is-more approach and its Shaker influence. Whether it’s the kitchen cabinetry or the free standing pieces for the rest of the home, our customers tell us how they appreciate its ability to suit any style of house. Its pared-back nature lets it act as a blank yet beautiful canvas. But, we wanted to help Suffolk to do more. Its ‘standard’ palette felt a little too country. A few of its details were a bit too fussy. And some of the learnings and new ideas we’ve had since it was first designed deserved to become part of the entire collection. So, we’ve gone back to the drawing board. This is Suffolk Kitchen, again, anew. For local stockists visit www.neptune.com 24 | CountryImagesMagazine.co.uk

New for 2018 at Thorpe’s of Ilkeston “Nothing lasts forever” so says David Thorpe of Thorpe’s Furnishers in Ilkeston. As many of the big chains are finding, there are now more high street closures than stores opening. Bucking the trend, Thorpe's of Ilkeston are opening their recently acquired unit in the old Ilkeston Co-op, to be branded ‘£399 or less’. What this means is that whilst they will continue to offer quality furniture at the old shop (now 130 years old!) in planning for the next 130, they will be offering a new range of furniture at £399 or less – to include beds, sofas, wardrobes etc. Thorpes recognize that furniture has now become a fashion product, and unlike grandma who made her three piece suite last for thirty years, some customers prefer a change every three of four years, and therefore want to pay a price that enables this to happen. On offer will be branded furniture, as well as some lesser known names, all with free local delivery”.

From Picasso to Dahli

Spain never really appealed to me as a holiday destination, especially the popular tourist areas where they proudly proclaim, ‘Full English Breakfast or English Pub’ I may as well stay at home for that but, we were tempted to dip our toes into Girona in Catalunia and Ronda in the Province of Malaga. These are two contrasting areas and both full of excitingly different experiences for the visitor. On arrival at Girona airport and with not really a clue in which direction to point the hire car we came up with a cunning plan. One member of the party would hire a taxi and let the taxi lead the rest of us to our destination on the outskirts of Sant Esteve. When we showed the non -English speaking taxi driver the map he just shrugged and went to another taxi driver who also shrugged. This wasn’t going well, but he agreed, with a lot of gesturing, to take us if one of us map read for him! The journey of only a few kilometres to the northwest of Girona towards Figueres, in the dark, was quite unique indeed and at times somewhat scary. The villages in this lovely area were exactly what we were looking for - old and traditional. The small village shop sold everything from bread to bikes. On our first day we called in for Pan and was told, by pointing at the clock, to come back in an hour. On doing so we picked up the most beautiful freshly baked loaf. This shop became our source of

34 | CountryImagesMagazine.co.uk

supplies for the week and we had some excellent food. We wondered what the response would be when we asked for steak, “come back later” was the reply and we duly collected some superb steaks. When we asked for onions the old lady just shouted into the back room and her husband (we think) came out with garden fork in his hand and went across the road and dug up some onions. It just couldn’t get better. Why on earth would you want the hassle of Marbella when this kind of thing is around. One of the villages had a restaurant, not well signposted but the villagers knew it was there. Again no English was spoken but one of our party declared that he had ‘worked with a Spanish waiter’ and knew a bit of Spanish so he ordered the food. ‘No pesce no carne’ he said expecting to receive no fish or meat, however the waiter proudly presented us with huge plates of salads with fish and meat, plus wineskins full of red wine that you poured with accuracy down your throat, a skill that took some mastering but we were determined to succeed. We feared what the bill would be for the eight of us but I’ve never had such an exceptional , unordered(!) meal so cheap in my life. They were so good to us the platters kept coming, so did the bread and wine. The emphasis for our trip was also on seeing

Catalunya. Trips up and down the N11 to Girona and Figueres or the C56 West to Banyoles and East to Llafranc from our base were easy. Girona boasts six museums Catalonia-Girona Museum of Archaeology, Girona History Museum, Cinema Museum, Girona Art Museum, Jewish History Museum and Casa Masó.

Girona declares “The historic city of Girona invites visitors to trace its more than 2000 years of history through two fortified enclosures, the Força Vella and the Medieval Quarter. The Força Vella dates back to the Roman foundation while the medieval extension of the city walls was carried out during the 14th and 15th centuries. The city’s artistic heritage has been preserved in the numerous monuments that have survived

CountryImagesMagazine.co.uk | 35

until today. The highlights of Girona are rounded off by the impressive old Jewish Quarter or Call, with its beautiful streets and porticoed squares, and by the exuberant baroque spaces and Noucentisme-style buildings by architect Rafael Masó.” The city’s many restaurants offer a wide variety of food: Catalan, Mediterranean, market and signature cuisine. Girona gastronomy has now become an international model of quality, with Michelin-starred restaurants that include El Celler de Can Roca, proclaimed by the prestigious Restaurant Magazine as the Best Restaurant in the World! We didn’t try that one but opted for the smaller bars where you can pick and choose from a large variety of tapas and a glass of Ratafia, a sweet liqueur made from a local herb, which makes for a very sociable afternoons relaxation. A ride into the Pre Pyrenees Natural park of Sierra ei Cadi, the largest in Catalonia, afforded us the opportunity to film a golden eagle as it walked up the dusty track towards our car whilst we were having a coffee, then took off majestically only 25 yards in front of us. We were transfixed. It is obvious why this mountain range is so popular with hikers. It is also an area the young Pablo Picasso visited. Whilst on the subject of famous artists, a short drive up to Figueres, right on the edge of the Spanish/French border, will offer you the opportunity to visit the Dalí Theatre and Museum which houses the largest collection of Salvador Dali’s work, and he’s buried under the

36 | CountryImagesMagazine.co.uk

stage too! During 2017 an exhumation order of his tomb was executed due to someone claiming to be a child of his. A short flat walk from the Dalí Theatre brings you to Castell de Sant Ferran the place where Napoleon based his troops and is proclaimed to be the largest castle in Europe. As we took a leisurely stroll through the old town, through its squares, looking at the historic buildings, you realise that it’s a place that you need to explore again. Flights to Girona are from East Midlands, and Birmingham.

You can also opt to fly to Barcelona which will give you easy access to the coastal area of Calella de Palafrugell or Llafranc (my favourite). There are many companies who offer villas in this area but it is a little more pricey than inland which is to be expected. The beaches are a real treat around here providing a great base to get to Girona, Figueres or Barcelona further south. Visiting this area provided us with history, scenery, beaches and brilliant cuisine. One to definitely return to.

Antiques & Collectibles by Maxwell Craven

A

t various times over my boyhood, I received a propelling pencil for birthday or Christmas, which, of course, duly got lost at school or somehow broken. Most were plastic bodies and some had different coloured leads. My grandfather had a silver one boasting a dippen nib with a propelling pencil hidden beneath the nib’s curve, which could be moved out whilst the nib retracted.

Mama, who was a serious bridge player, had a set of four with the suits in colour on the silver bodies and little coloured silky tassels, which lived in a powder blue box and came out when she and her friends sat down to play, along with the gin. Perhaps I should have kept mine, for most propelling pencils or mechanical pencils are collectible and some highly collectible.

engraved jewels; there was something for every income level. But until the early 20th century, they were generally all just plain, propelling pencils. They may be found in a bewildering variety of media: gold, silver, ivory, tortoiseshell, and there are numerous novelties, from guns, parasols, axes, creatures (great and small) and so on.

The modern pencil was born in 16th-century England, where, in Cumbria, a major deposit of graphite was found. The earliest pencils had square solid graphite cores. In 1795, a Frenchman named Nicholas Jacques Conté mixed powdered graphite with clay so that the material could be formed into rods that would be hardened by firing. This allowed pencil makers to vary the quality of the mark made by the rod—the greater the percentage of graphite to clay, the softer the rod and the darker the mark.

The first major development was the propel-repel pencil. Whereas the previous incarnation of the pencil had the lead freely sliding in and out of a closely-fitted tube, a new innovation approached the problem a little differently. The end of the lead firmly fitted into a socket, and the socket—

It also enabled a new type of pencil to be invented in 1822. This was a ‘mechanical’ pencil, the cocreation of English inventors Sampson Mordan and Gabriel Riddle. Mechanical pencils, aided by the user, had a small rod which pushed the graphite rod down a tube of conforming diameter usually with a twist action mechanism via helical drive to the pencil’s point, and held them there. When done writing, the mechanism could be twisted the reverse way. Between 1822 to 1874, more than 160 patents were registered pertaining to a variety of improvements to such pencils. The first springloaded mechanical pencil was patented in 1877 and the twist-feed mechanism was developed in 1895. Some of these pencils are simple, some are fancy, with lead-storage compartments, erasers hidden inside the finial, or even finial-mounted 40 | CountryImagesMagazine.co.uk

attached to a shuttle—moved up and down the length of the barrel. Unfortunately, when used up, the lead tended to break off, right at the socket. Then the only solution was to ream out the socket, or discard the pencil and buy a fresh one. Further development was required. This came in the 1930s. Rather than simply wedging the lead into a socket, a propelling rod was placed inside the socket; one which travels only far enough to push remnants of the lead out of the socket, doing so only when the mechanism is at the furthest point of travel along the barrel. This design was truly revolutionary, and is still in use in fine mechanical pencils today. It

Above: A silver Eversharp pencil in its original box, c. 1930, say £30-50. Far left: Tiffany & Co., New York, silver 1920 skyscraper pencil, sold recently for £2,250. Top left: Chester 1895 marked silver two colour pencil by Henry Griffiths, estimated at £50-80. Bottom left: A silver miniature seal top Mordan pencil 1891 and a gilt metal example with ring and cabochon twist, from a collection we once had at home: value at auction c. £15-25. became eloquently known as the propel-repelexpel pencil. Needless to say, there are numerous variations and combinations of all three varieties. The slide- and screw-mechanism pencils from the early part of the 19th century are highly prized, as are the combination pen-pencils (like Grandpa’s) from later that century. Some had a pencil on one end and a pen on the other. Throughout the nineteenth century and into the 20th, Sampson Mordan and Co. remained the pre-eminent manufacturer in the UK. Miniature mechanical pencils were also popular. They were typically decorated with celluloid or enamel cases. Some telescoped, others were built into pocketknives. In the early 20th century, you could get everything from tricolour pencils to ones with calendars on their cases (these were usually made by Mordan, too). By the 20th century, even high-end retailers like Tiffany and Cartier were commissioning examples, often designed in Art Nouveau or Art-Deco styles. Collectible brands of 20th century pencils include Yard-O-Led (which boasted twelve 3in leads in the barrel, patented in 1934) and Wahl-Eversharp (founded by C R Keenan 1915, but taken over by Wahl 1918), which cased their

pencils in metal and hard rubber, while Sheaffer and Waterman used hard colourful Bakelite. Of course, advertisers liked to put their logos and slogans on mechanical pencils too, especially during the 1930s and 1940s and these, even if quite cheaply made, are all the more collectible for it. Victorian pencils are so varied and attractive that many collectors refuse to stray into the following era in their collecting. At Bamford’s we recently sold a lot of three gilt metal ones - one chased, the others engine-turned, one with a seal top and one with a ring on the end for attachment to a châtelaine or similar for marking dance cards - for £22 against an estimate of £15-20. Base metal and non-exotic material ones are not expensive but can be very attractive and, of course, retain their utility as long as you want them to! These can also have amusing refinements, such as a Stanhope – a peephole at the top with a view of some beauty spot, or a portrait of a notable – or a seal end with an engraved armorial, enabling one to track down the original owner. Even in base metal the engine turning or chase-carving can be of respectable quality, and yet £20 will often buy you one at auction, although non-precious metal

examples do tend to be sold in groups. Some are not only precious metal, but wonderfully attractive like the Mordan piglet pencil sold recently for £1,695 or the exceedingly rare pencil made to resemble Capt. Whitehead’s 1869 pioneering compressed air torpedo, registration marked for 1877, which retailed recently for £1,200. Strangely, some of the very earliest sold of late (made by Joshua Butler or Sampson Mordan) have been priced at under £600, despite such refinements as gold and tortoiseshell bodies. At auction, though, such prices are unlikely to be attained. A two colour Henry Griffiths & Sons silver pencil marked for Chester 1895 was estimated at £50-80 and barely cleared its upper estimate. Another firm sold three unremarkable 9ct gold 20th century ones for £100, but another, slightly superior from the 1940s was estimated at £50-80 and made £180. The exotic ones, like a wonderful quality 1920 silver skyscraper by Tiffany, recently sold for £2,250. In other words, these useful and attractive little items can suit any taste at almost any price. Just remember, though: check condition, and go for quality.

…Of Horse Stingers, Eye Pokers, SNAKE KILLER &

T

here are many legends in Folklore pertaining to Dragonflies, in Europe they are often associated with snakes and the Devil. In Germany there are over 150 different local names given to these oft maligned creatures, Teufelsnadel (Devils needle), and Schlangentoter (Snake Killer) being just a few of them. Norway gives us Oyenstikker (Eye Poker) and Sweden Trollslanda (Troll's Spindle).

Horse Stinger probably derives its description from someone having observed a dragonfly near horses, who seemed to be trying to repel it, when in fact the truth of the matter is more likely to be that it was only trying to feed on the horseflies that were doing the actual biting. Naughty children were once told that if they told lies the dragonfly would come and sew their mouth shut, you can perhaps now begin to appreciate how these beautiful insects have come to have such a bad name.

approached closely for a photographic opportunity.

Our subjects can be traced back millions of years , fossils have been found in the coal measures laid down in the Carboniferous period (two such fossils were found locally at Bolsover Colliery in 1978). They show similarities to present day dragonflies but lack some features and for this reason are now referred to as Griffon flies. They were also much larger than present day, some of them having a 30 inch wingspan .

Dragonflies have 360 degree vision, their compound eyes are built up of around 30,000 facets allowing them to see in ultra HD. Their four wings can move independently giving great manoeuvrability, they can fly at up to 30 m.p.h. in pursuit of their quarry and are capable of hovering, moving backwards and changing direction in the blink of an eye. Catching a meal is achieved by using stiff hairs on their legs which form a “basket”, they can then either eat on the wing or retire to a convenient perch to consume the unfortunate victim.

Let us now set the record straight, dragonflies will not bite you, sting you or sew your mouth shut! They are however fierce predators, feeding on other insects such as mosquitoes, flies , smaller dragonflies and other flying insects. They are also very territorial, some can be encouraged to take up residence on a stick pushed into the bank of a pond and can then be

Damsel flies are smaller relatives of dragonflies, these are a more dainty looking insect and fold the wings over their back at rest. Dragonflies can not do this as the wings once expanded and dried following emergence lock into place horizontally. Both begin life under water as “nymphs”, they pre-date any small creatures they encounter including small fish and even their own

Darning Needles

kind. The mouth parts of the nymph shoot forward at lightning speed to catch lunch and this gave the inspiration for the design of the Alien in the film of the same name. They don't however, have it all their own way, many are taken by larger fish as a tasty snack. As a neat survival trick, the nymph can shoot water through its bottom and becomes jet propelled to avoid capture. Once fully grown (which can take up to four years), the nymph will climb emergent vegetation and split its skin to emerge as an adult dragonfly or damselfly. This is normally triggered by rising water and air temperature indicating suitable conditions. During this time it is very vulnerable to predation as it takes a couple of hours to pump fluid through the veins to inflate the wings, then harden off. For this reason the emergence takes place at night. The resulting insect will not gain its full colours until it has fed, in this state they are referred to as “Teneral. They now fly away from water to find hedgerows and woodland rides where they can feed in comparative safety, returning later to dispute territories and mate with newly emerged females. Mating takes place in a wheel shape , the male grasping the female behind the head. Once mated the female will then lay her eggs. Some species release their eggs directly into the water (chasers do this), others such as hawkers will deposit eggs on submerged vegetation. The Willow Emerald damselfly lays her eggs in cuts made in willow bark over water. There are many different survival strategies. So next time you are out for a stroll and come across one of these magnificent creatures don't be afraid of it, you will not get bitten, stung or have your mouth sewn shut, marvel instead at the beauty and the inspiration for both a blockbuster and a form of modern transport in the guise of the helicopter. ’ve lost count how many times I’ve said the good weather is just round the corner after such a long wet winter and spring. At the time of writing this, it`s still grey skies with the odd occasional fantastic day! I do believe my prediction has got to be a hot dry summer and autumn and before long hose pipe bans. With the first very warm, sunny day I thought it was the perfect time to remind you when you are out in the garden to wear sun screen or clothing that will protect you from the sun … not the first thing people think about while doing gardening but sun protection should be part of your gardening equipment. I’m feeling a lot more positive now I’m able to get out into the allotment and plant herbs and vegetables, there’s a bit of a back log.

Allotment or Vegetable Patch:

• Feed strawberries as they are forming fruit, with a liquid tomato fertiliser or powder sulphate of potash. • Earth up potatoes by moving soil or compost up around their stems. • Hang pheromone traps in apple and plum to control pests. • Remember to pick rhubarb as it develops and water clumps with liquid feed. • Remove strawberry “runners” as soon as they grow – they take nutrients from mother plant. Pot up runners in plant pots to make extra plants to plant up in the autumn. • Feed fruit trees and bushes with sulphate of potash • Watch for signs of powdery mildew on fruit trees and bushes and treat with a fungicide. • Plant out crops raised under glass, such as tomatoes, marrows and courgettes. • Prevent birds from eating your soft fruit by covering small bushes with netting.

In the Greenhouse:

• Remember to properly ventilate your greenhouse, poor air circulation can encourage disease. 44 | CountryImagesMagazine.co.uk

with Mark Smith

• Keep a look out for pests, check under leaves and new shoots for signs of attack – usually red spider mite, whitefly or greenfly • Try hanging sticky traps over plants to catch any whitefly. • Important to water growbags and pots regularly, sometimes daily if needed in very warm weather. • Pinch out the centre of any cuttings to promote bushy growth • Liquid feed any planted up hanging baskets.

General Garden Maintenance:

• Still a great time to sow new lawns with grass seed. – remembering to water well if there is a lack of rain. • Rake out any dead grass from lawns. • Feed the lawn with a suitable lawn fertiliser. • Check for daisies and dandelions, and dig out. • Plant out container grown trees and shrubs - remembering to water well if there is a lack of rain. • Tie in any new growth of climbing plants, such as honeysuckle and clematis etc. • Buy a water butt to collect any rainfall to use later. • Buy a compost bin to recycle any green waste from the kitchen and garden. • Apply bark mulches around newly planted or established trees and shrubs to retain moisture and help suppress weeds. • Sprinkle a handful of sulphate of potash around fruit trees and bushes • Give camellias, rhododendrons, azaleas and pieris a good handful of ericaceous (acidic) fertiliser. • Clip hedges and apply a granular fertiliser . • Keep topiary in check by giving a light clip now. • Hand weed beds to prevent weeds establishing. • Watch out for Red Lilly Beetle on the leaves of lilies. You can easily squash any you find or spray with a suitable pesticide like Provado Ultimate Bug Killer. • Apply teak oil to wooden garden furniture to condition and improve the look of it for summer. • Look out for greenfly and blackfly developing on shrubs, perennials and roses, spray with a pesticide.

Try these three plants that will give you great late spring colour; Exochorda x macrantha “The Bride”: A simply stunning shrub with light green rounded leaves, a mass of pure white flowers starting from the end of April into mid May. It likes full sun or partial shade – some books say acidic soil but it will be okay in neutral, well drained soil. It will reach about 4ft in height. Scabious ‘Blue Mist / Pink Butterfly” Fast becoming one of my favourite plants for value for money, this exciting plant has a dome forming habit with rounded , dome shaped flowers of powder blue or light pink that appear from the beginning of February to late September. It attracts masses of bees and butterflies and grows about 1ft x 1ft, it needs a sunny, moist but free draining position. Sorbaria ‘Sem’ A great shrub that should be better known. Attractive pale yellow foliage with narrow pointed leaves and vivid bright orange, red new growth. Height 4 to 5ft needs a sunny well drained position. Makes a good container plant.

T

hey go together like ďŹ sh and chips, bread and butter or salt and pepper. But now Cannon and Ball, the comedy duo who at one time pulled in almost 20 million viewers for their weekly television show, are having to undertake solo projects to stay in work.

Steve Orme interviews

Tommy Cannon

CountryImagesMagazine.co.uk | 51

Tommy Cannon is doing his first solo stage play, a new comedy called Seriously Dead, while Bobby Ball has been seen in a couple of TV sitcoms. But the pair who have been a double act for 55 years will join up again later in the year. They will both be in Bobby’s play The Dressing Room which will tour for two months before Cannon and Ball spend Christmas in panto, the third successive year they have been signed up to play at Crewe Lyceum. This year’s show is Jack and the Beanstalk.

The Dressing Room features a group of comics having a laugh before Cannon and Ball do 25 minutes of their own material.

Tommy looks on acting as a challenge, although he admits it’s a bit odd looking around and his old mate Bobby – catchphrase “Rock on Tommy!” – isn’t at his side. “It’s a bit nerve-racking to be honest with you. But sometimes we have to do things separately simply because if we don’t work we don’t earn any money.” Tommy, a likeable northerner with no pretensions, doesn’t hold anything back when he talks about how the world of entertainment has been turned upside down over the past couple of decades. “When you think about what we do, we’ve got nowhere to go and do it. Summer seasons have gone. In the ‘80s we used to do 25 weeks at Bournemouth and 25 weeks in Blackpool, Torquay and all them sorts of places. But they don’t do it any more. “When variety died it were just like somebody had switched the light off. We went ‘where’s all that gone? Where’s the summer seasons gone? Who’s changed that?’” Tommy appeared in a Christmas special of Lee Mack’s TV sitcom Not Going Out – Bobby plays Lee’s dad – and Tommy also made a guest appearance last year in the soap Doctors. Four years ago he and Bobby toured a farce, Ha Ha Hood!, with Su Pollard – but apart from that he has done little acting. That’s why he’s enjoying Seriously Dead. “I’m a character by the name of Albert Blunderstone who’s a bit of a northern boy, has a bit of a way with the ladies. Me and another guy have done a bank robbery and he’s disappeared. It was £50,000 we stole and I’m trying to find out where it’s gone because I never got any of it.”

How did Tommy get the job? “I know Leah Bell who’s the director. She’s written it and is in it as well. I heard that she was after me to do the play. I rang Leah up and she said it would be lovely if I could do it. So I said let’s give it a go. It was as simple as that.” Thomas Derbyshire was born in Oldham on 27 June 1938. He met Robert Harper in the early 1960s while they were working as welders in the same factory. They formed a club act and turned professional in the late 1960s, changing their names to Cannon and Ball. 52 | CountryImagesMagazine.co.uk

Their primetime Saturday night programme The Cannon and Ball Show was one of London Weekend Television’s most successful series and lasted for 12 years. They recently returned to the small screen in a reality-type show called Last Laugh in Vegas. Nine showbiz legends from the worlds of comedy, music and variety were given a last shot at putting on an act in Las Vegas, the variety capital of the world. Cannon and Ball joined Bernie Clifton, comedian Mick Miller, pianist Bobby Crush, singer Kenny Lynch, pop idol Jess Conrad, singer Anita Harris and Su Pollard for a five-part TV series in which they prepared for the gig of a lifetime.

Tommy admits it was fun but it was also challenging. “We didn’t know what we were going to do. All we knew was that we were going to be out there for virtually two weeks. We enjoyed it.” But while they were there a gunman opened fire on a crowd of concertgoers at a music festival on the Vegas Strip, leaving 58 people dead and 851 injured. “Vegas was very special apart from the fact that all them people got killed,” says Tommy. “That was very sad. Typical Americans – the following day they were going down the Strip with banners the size of a garage saying ‘keep your heads high America, we can beat this’. It was fantastic to think they were rallying round so quick.” The programme may lead to new opportunities for the showbiz veterans who went to Vegas, although Tommy is taking nothing for granted. “If anything does happen it would be in the early stages of next year. TV don’t work that quick any more. We’ll have to wait and see. Who knows?” After Seriously Dead Tommy and Bobby will start another tour of The Dressing Room. It features a group of comics having a laugh before Cannon and Ball do 25 minutes of their own material. “It’s variety within a play,” says Tommy. He agrees there is still an outlet for variety but the problem is that the younger generation doesn’t experience it. “It’s 30-odd years since we were on TV, every Saturday, Christmas specials and Easter specials and all that stuff. There’s a whole generation who’ve grown up in that time. They don’t know about us unless they go on YouTube. “The funniest thing of all is when you do pantomime the kids are waiting for an autograph and they say ‘you’re really funny, why aren’t you on telly?’ There’s a new generation out there who don’t know what variety is about.” As well as the good times, Tommy has had a number of bad experiences. When variety died, he found

it difficult to get back on his feet. Last year he was made bankrupt but remains stoical about it: “It’s just one of those things in life – it happens to lots of people.”

“You’ve got to live each day of your life. Your life is now. Not tomorrow because you don’t know if you’re going to wake up tomorrow and yesterday’s gone. So your life is now. Don’t look back, only look forward.”

He lives with his second wife Hazel near York with their two daughters and a son. He has two daughters from his first marriage.

Wise words from a showbiz lynchpin who has every reason to look to the future.

Tommy Cannon appears in Seriously Dead at the Pomegranate Theatre, Chesterfield on 13 May while Cannon and Ball will take to the Pomegranate stage in The Dressing Room on 23 September.

His career now seems on the up again and 2018 has been really good so far. “We’ve had a heck of a year. My daughter got married recently, we’ve been backwards and forwards to London doing shooting for Last Laugh in Vegas – I don’t know whether I’m on me backside or me elbow to be quite honest with you. I’m still in there fighting.” Tommy became a Christian in 1992 which he says has made a big difference to his life. “But I’m not holier than thou and I don’t go round telling people what they should do with their lives and all that business. I’m happy being a Christian.” He doesn’t have any big ambitions left but he’s still content to rock on: “I cannot believe I’m 80 in June. I think: how have I lived this long? Looking back on the TV we used to do I think to myself: it were 34 years ago! Where’s that gone? CountryImagesMagazine.co.uk | 53

A walk with Rambler

Tideswell, Miller’s Dale & Litton Useful Information

T

he history of the Peak District is writ large on this walk. Starting way back in time when volcanoes spewed out their lavas, the walk enters one of the loveliest dales in the White Peak, but it was where orphaned children were unable to enjoy its delights. Climbing out of the dale, the way is across fields whose layout would still be recognised by the medieval farmers who ploughed their furrows with pairs of oxen. Two villages come next, Litton and Tideswell, the latter with its church classed as the ‘Cathedral of the Peak’. From there the way back to the car park follows back roads and footpaths laid out well over a hundred years ago. The volcanic activity mentioned above took place in what is now known as Tideswell Dale. The hillside to your left, on walking down the dale, has some quarried areas of dark coloured rock between layers of limestone. These are the remains of lava flows that spewed out of volcanic vents surrounding a tropical lagoon that once covered what became the White Peak of Derbyshire. At the dale end the path joins the main, or Miller’s Dale down which flows the clear waters of the Derbyshire River Wye. A mile or two downstream the river enters its prettiest section, aptly called ‘Water-cum-Jolly Dale’, but before it reaches this sylvan glade, the

river once powered a cotton mill whose young operatives lived a life of hell. This is Litton Mill to which orphaned children were brought from workhouses as far away as London to enter a life of cruel servitude as so-called apprentices. Nowadays the mill having ceased production, has been converted into apartments and its subordinate cottages are now lived in by locals whose ancestors may well have been those orphans apprenticed to slavery. There were two cotton mills along this section of Miller’s Dale, and depending on fate, any child not destined to the cruelty of Litton Mill might have found itself working at Cressbrook Mill a few yards beyond the delights of Water-cum-Jolly. These children although still used as cheap labour, were by comparison with their brothers and sisters upstream treated more fairly. The place where they worked was called Cressbrook Mill. Like its partner, the mill stopped spinning cotton decades ago and like Litton has been converted into apartments. Climbing out of the main dale, the walk follows Cressbrook Dale where this salad plant was once gathered as a cash crop. Using a woodland path until it reaches open pastures, a side path climbs narrow Tansley Dale to reach Litton village. This village where the locals run a co-operative store selling basic foodstuffs rather like the original

Public transport: Chesterfield/Tideswell service: (Buxton route) – G&J Holmes/ Hulleys number 66. Parking. (Pay) is at the head of Tideswell Dale (B6049) self-help founders, has a welcoming pub as well as a tea room attached to the shop. Narrow fields surrounding Litton and its larger neighbour, Tideswell are known as strip fields designed to be ploughed in one day by a team of two oxen. A quiet side road leads from Litton into Tideswell. Once the major town in this part of the Peak, its parish church, aptly called the Cathedral of the Peak, speaks well of Tideswell’s one-time even greater prosperity. Being on what was once a busy cross-country turnpike, it still has pubs that once welcomed travellers on not-socomfortable mail coaches whose horses could be changed here.

The Walk

Tideswell, Miller’s Dale and Litton • Follow the partly surfaced path down Tideswell Dale from the car park and toilet block. Swop sides at the fork and go over a small wooden bridge, continuing to walk downstream. A side path on the left a hundred yards from the start of the walk leads up to a small quarry where the basaltic lava was spewed millions of years ago. • Entering Miller’s the main dale, turn left along the valley-bottom road and follow it to Litton Mill. • Go through two imposing gateposts and walk through the mill yard, bearing right on a concessionary path. Continue to your left down the dale. Although the rest of the mill is private, it is still possible to see the pipework of a turbine which powered the working mill in its later years. • Look out for birdlife as you follow the River Wye in its twists and turns down the dale. Spend time admiring the view of Water-cumJolly Dale. N.b. the path is sometimes flooded at this point, so keep well to your left. • Keep to the left of Cressbrook Mill and follow the path as far as the road. • Turn left along the valley road and where it begins to climb, take the right fork still going uphill. • Leave the road where the road doubles back uphill, and walk forwards along a woodland track. • Beyond a group of cottages, continue ahead on a narrow woodland path climbing steadily up Cressbrook Dale. • Where the path goes downhill at a clearing, follow it over a narrow footbridge and climb steeply uphill from the far bank of the stream. • Reaching a boundary wall at the top of the slope, do not cross the stile but begin to go back downhill in order to cross the dale. • At a junction of paths close by the stream, cross the latter by way of stepping stones and begin to climb Tansley Dale. • At the head of this dale start to bear slightly right and cross a series of narrow fields, using stiles to keep on course. • Bear left on entering a narrow track accessing the fields and follow it for about twenty yards

and then go to your right into a field. • Walk diagonally left to the far left hand corner of the field in order to enter Litton village close to its tiny village co-op. (The pub is almost opposite if you want something stronger). • Bear left along the village street and, on reaching the green, bear right on to a side road. • Follow this road, over a minor cross roads for about three quarters of a mile, until it joins Tideswell’s high street opposite the magnificent parish church. Tideswell sits at the bottom of a sheltered bowl. Almost a town, it is one of the most self-supporting

places in the Peak; the church dates from around the 14th-century and is an indication of the woolbased wealth of that time. The ebbing and flowing well which gave Tideswell its name was once one of the Seven Wonders of the Peak, is in a private garden round the back of the church, but it does not appear to have worked for many years. • Bear left along the main road past the church, past the public toilets and then turn right on to a side road (Gordon Road). • Follow this side road, parallel to the main, until its end and go through a small gate above the sewage works and join a path. • Follow the path until it reaches the main road and then turn right. • Cross over and turn right to follow the pavement back to the car park.

Millers Dale Holiday Cottages The Old Stores and 1 Rock View are two Holiday Cottages in Millers Dale, Derbyshire. Gallery... Wildlife artist Richard Whittlestone opens his Spring exhibition on the 12th of May at his gallery on the Chatsworth Estate, with the theme of British Owls. "Owls are without question the most popular subject amongst the public visiting my gallery", says Richard, "I think we can all identify with their rounded - almost human - facial features, not to mention their beautifully marked, soft plumage and calm, quiet manner." We are fortunate here in Derbyshire to have all five species of native Owl resident the year round. Tawny Owls are the most common and most vocal, especially through the winter months. Barn and Little Owls frequent open farmland, often roosting and nesting in the many stone

barns dotted throughout the Peak District. Short-eared Owls are birds of the open moorlands, their numbers rising and falling with the availability of the field vole - their main food source. Long-eared Owls tend to frequent coniferous woodland and heathland, similar in appearance to the Tawny but smaller and more shy. Two other Owls visit the United Kingdom, the Snowy Owl, a rare migrant across Scotland, and the European Eagle Owl which is now reported to be breeding in the North- East. "I have observed these birds many times in Sweden" Richard continues, "but not yet here in Britain". "Little Owls (although not a true native) are probably my favourite of all, they have such attitude and can be watched easily as they are active during daylight hours. We have a pair in the fields beyond our garden and their dumpy little figures can be seen on the wall tops or on the branches of the old sycamore as they hunt for moths or worms". Richard has also painted this months front cover 'Tawny Owl Portrait'. "I have studied many rescued Tawny Owls from close quarters, their intricate plumage and deep set eyes never fail to impress, they have an air of aloofness about them". The exhibition will include many new owl portraits and full paintings, plus finished sketches and pen and ink drawings. "I have also produced a number of miniatures", says Richard, "small and very affordable, they sell well, so be quick with those!"

Fairground Battle! Victorian carousel made by one of England’s finest makers set to go to foreign shores. The call of the Victorian fairground got phone, internet and room bidders into a spin as they battled to own a magnificent carousel in a tense auction contest. The rare opportunity to buy a unique, English, hand-carved merry-goround, dating back to 1895, sparked interest across the world. Just after 8pm on April 5, a phone bid of £35,000 secured the stunning work of art and a piece of British fairground history. However, it is now destined to leave the country where it was made. Charles Hanson, owner of Hansons Auctioneers, said: “The ride will be hopping across the Channel to a buyer in France. It was an exciting auction battle with bidders in the room as well as on the internet and phones. The interest was huge and deservedly so.

The Victorian carousel seen through the years.

“The ride was made in Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire, by George Orton, Sons and Spooner of Swan Works, a firm regarded as the best in the business, and was last used at Nottingham Goose Fair in 1979. “This hand-turned carousel is an example of British craftsmanship at its best, exemplified by the magnificent carved detail in each of the horses and peacocks created to delight children when Queen Victoria was still on the throne. “Many people have come to see it in our saleroom including some whose fathers or grandfathers once worked for the firm that made these merry-go-rounds. “It’s an important, very early and unique carousel which captures the essence of the Victorian fairground.”

In its early days, the ride, which can be flat-packed, would have been transported by horse as part of a travelling fair. According to historical documents found with the item, it’s the only 10-section, three-abreast carousel ever built and, apart from redecoration, is exactly as it was. The ride is 18ft in diameter and features 12 ponies and six peacocks along with the peacock chariots, which can carry nine children in each. No two carved figures are the same and they are all suspended on twisted, brasscovered iron rods. It also features mirrored ceilings and a mirrored centre. Mr Hanson said: “The ride was originally made for Fred Westrope but was taken to fairs by the Meakin family. It was a regular visitor at Burton’s statutes fair every October. It was later bought by a Mrs West and taken to fairs in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. Later it passed to Jimmy Fantom and travelled with the Fantom family for 46 years. After its final appearance at Nottingham Goose Fair, it passed to Burton couple George and Joyce Mander who restored it to its former glory and took it along to steam rallies and vintage fairs. The historical notes tell us that every effort was made to retain its Victorian authenticity during the painstaking restoration. “Rides such as this demanded ornate carving, decorative brackets and other embellishments made with great skill. In time, the demand for speedier, more thrilling rides heralded their demise.” “We hope the new owners cherish its rich history and continue to enjoy what is a magnificent object.” The Victorian merry-go-round was sold at Hansons Auctioneers, Heage Lane, Etwall, on April 5. Dining Out at The Yeaveley Arms eaveley is one of those cosy little red brick villages that hug the farm land between Derby and Ashbourne. So perfectly do they fit into the landscape that if they were not there you would know that there was something missing. On an unseasonably chilly spring evening the village still had a warm atmosphere none more so than the welcoming lights of the newly refurbished Yeaveley Arms. We had been delayed and so, arrived fashionably late. Fears that this would be a problem were soon dispelled as we walked into the cosy atmosphere of the busy bar with its homely seating and glowing log burning stove. The Yeaveley Arms had been abandoned for 4 years but was now looking stunning. We were booked into the pub’s Pear Tree Restaurant, so named after the tree that stands outside. Adjoining the bar, but separated by a glazed partition, the restaurant is a quiet space with subdued lighting emphasizing the candle lit tables. Rob Parker, MD and landlord, introduced himself to us and took our drinks order. Susan chose a glass of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and I followed Rob’s recommendation; a tall glass of a Bavarian craft beer, Fels Pilsner, from 700 year old brewers: ABK. This new beer is a full flavoured yet smooth drink and for the non-wine drinker would be an excellent choice to accompany a meal. We selected our starters and again followed Rob’s recommendations for our mains. From a starter selection of six dishes including shellfish, soup, and 2 vegetarian dishes, Susan selected the duck liver parfait. The smooth paté had rich flavour and was paired with smoked, sliced duck breast. The smoke is evident but not overwhelming. This was served with toasted sour dough and a red onion jam that brought the 2 flavours together. I continued the smoky theme and chose the smoked-haddock chowder. Chowder takes many forms and most are not very elegant but this was the exception. Flakes of aromatic, smoky flavoured haddock filled the bowl surrounded by a creamy, velvet smooth chowder sauce and a scattering of croutons. The final flourish was a swirl of tangy Romesco sauce. This is a hearty fisherman’s soup that has been elevated to restaurant standards. For our mains I stayed with the fish while Susan chose the crackled pork belly. The pork meat was ‘falling apart’ tender. In contrast, the perfectly seasoned crackling snapped when bitten and melted in the mouth: all the pleasant tastes and textures you expect from pork. It was served with a small pan of smooth, tender 64 | CountryImagesMagazine.co.uk

boulangere potatoes and generous portion of braised red cabbage that brought in a sweet note to compliment the pork. A small pot of creamy, peppery sauce was the finishing touch to this dish that has become a favourite at the Yeaveley Arms. My main was the Romesco baked hake. The fresh, flaky white fish fillet had a crust of Romesco sauce and sat on a bed of fennel, roasted peppers, tomatoes and saffron potatoes. All the taste and flavours of northeastern Spain’s Mediterranean coast. This dish is bright, balanced and full of rich savoury flavours from the roasted vegetables and the hint of smoky paprika. After our meal we chatted with Rob about his background and his further plans for the pub. Educated locally and at Buxton High Peak College his first placement was with Herr Director Reinhard Schreek at the Parkhotel am Kurhaus. After returning to the UK he held various positions including Banqueting Operations Manager at the 5 star Langham Hotel, London. He is planning more taster menu evenings at the pub. The first was a seafood menu. The pub has hosted live music evenings and more dates have been arranged through the Summer including a regular Saturday afternoon slot. It’s also the centre of community activity embracing everything from a pop-up café to a car boot morning in aid of a village charity. The Yeaveley Arms opens 7 days a week: 4pm to 11pm on Monday and Tuesday and the rest of the week, from Wednesday to Sunday, 12 noon to 11pm. Their bar menu has an extensive selection of all the traditional dishes including burgers, fish and chips, bangers and mash and flat iron steaks and also, what is rarely seen these days, an assortment of reasonably priced, lunchtime sandwiches. The bar menu is available on Wednesday and Thursday between 12 noon and 2pm and from 6pm to 8pm. On Friday and Saturday the bar menu is only available between 12 noon and 2.30pm. The Pear Tree Restaurant’s new a la carte menu is available between 6pm and 8.30pm, Wednesday to Saturday. On Sunday along with the bar the restaurant serves the roast menu only between 12 noon and 4pm. A big ‘thank you’ to Rob and his staff for making us feel relaxed after our demanding journey and for a memorable and tasty dining experience.

Ashmere - Age Is Just A Number!

A

shmere Derbyshire who have seven residential homes across Derbyshire launched its bespoke intergenerational programme with Emma Quinn from Boogie Beat music and movement seeing all seven homes take part in a Boogie Beat marathon, inviting local children aged 0-6 years to participate in a free class alongside Ashmere residents.

“We wanted to reach out to the community and build better relationships between young children and the elderly and were confident that working with Boogie Beat was the perfect way to achieve this. The classes use traditional fairy tales and nursery rhymes to help develop confidence, coordination and social skills and most importantly they are fun for any age” said Sarah Dixon community relationship manager at Ashmere. Emma Quinn from Boogie Beat said “I have been running Boogie Beat music and movement Derby/Notts for over four years in various private day nurseries, pre-schools, soft play

centres and schools. The franchise itself was established in 2000 and is highly successful across the UK! I previously worked as a primary school teacher and have danced all of my life so it enables me to mix my two passions- what more could I ask for” Kidsley Grange Resident Winnie Martin said “well I wondered what was happening at first, all I saw was lots of babies and toddlers arrive and thought they must have got lost! But the girls (staff) told me that we were being visited by the local community and we were all having a sing song with the young children, oh it was so nice to see the little one’s dancing and singing and I even got to hold a little baby girl, it made my day”. Ashmere Derbyshire isn’t stopping there and is looking forward to offering lots more intergenerational activities and it will see them become the first care home provider in the area offer free dementia friends training to local schools and brownie groups. www.ashmere.co.uk

Why you should make a Lasting Power of Attorney

N

o one likes to think about becoming incapable of making their own decisions, but incapacity can strike at any time through illness or accident. It can affect people of all ages, turning the world of the sufferer and their family upside down.

Stroke-sufferers may be physically or mentally incapacitated, temporarily or permanently. This may mean that they are unable to deal with their personal and financial affairs like they used to and they need help from family. However, without having made a Lasting Power of Attorney, your family could be placed in a situation where they are unable to help without first having to make an application to the Court. In the meantime, they may not be able to access your funds to pay for expenses and bills, or make decisions about your medical treatment and care. To avoid the stress, delay and expense of a Court application, you should make a Lasting Power of Attorney now, to ensure that the persons you trust can step into your shoes if you need help in the future.

Obesity in pets: not to be taken lightly! We are well into 2018 now and I expect many of us have given up on our new year’s resolutions but what about our pet’s health and fitness? It is estimated that 1 in 3 of our pets are overweight. Obesity in animals is the most common nutritional disorder seen by vets, yet it is easily preventable. Like with humans, obesity is caused by an excess of calories in, to calories burnt.

How can I help my pet lose weight or just keep my pet healthy?

What can obesity do to my pet?

A lot of vet practices will offer free weight clinics where your pet can be put on a management plan and be prescribed specific weight loss diets to quickly get your furry friend healthy again. But, there are lots of things you can do at home to help your pet lose weight or just keep your pet fit, healthy and happy.

Similarly to obesity in humans, being overweight can cause many health problems. Obese dogs and cats are more likely to suffer from arthritis, diabetes, skin conditions, heart and respiratory problems, liver disease and cancer. Alongside this, carrying extra weight can cause our pets to be stressed, uncomfortable, suffer heat intolerance and exercise intolerance meaning they cannot play games or lag behind on walks.

Diet is the most important key to managing an animal’s weight. Whatever food your pet is on, check the packaging label to make sure you’re feeding the correct amount for the appropriate weight of your pet. Weighing out the correct amount of food is also very important, many brands will provide measuring cups but unfortunately they are extremely inaccurate and can be 20% more than your pet needs.

How do I know if my pet is overweight?

Pet treats, such as Bonios, Dreamies or dental chews, are generally very high in calories but human food is often the worst. Feeding 25 grams of cheese to a 12kg dog is like you or I eating a cheeseburger! It is important to give your pet treats but it is also important to consider their overall intake. If giving treats, take a portion of your animals dinner away to prevent overeating. There are lots of healthy treat alternatives too, why not try giving your dog pieces of carrot or apple instead. As well as what goes into our pets, physical fitness is also very important. Promoting regular exercise, such as long walks and playing games with your pet, will help to keep them healthy. Knowing if your pet is the correct weight and initiating weight loss can be difficult but popping in to see your vet or nurse will provide you with lots of advise or assurance.

Vets don’t like to assign a specific weight to a dog or cat because there is such a vast range, from Chihuahuas to Great Danes and even within specific breeds there can be large variations. Due to this vast variety, it is better to focus on areas pets carry excess fat. You shouldn’t be able to see your pets ribs, but with a light touch you should be able to feel them. Having to press to feel the ribs or spine may mean your pet is overweight. From above, you should also be able to see a waist and from the side, you should be able to see a “tummy-tuck”. If you are unsure if your pet is under or overweight, most vet practices offer free nurse clinics where you can get your pet checked and receive lots of friendly advice.

XC40 Becomes Volvo’s Most Successful New Model Launch in UK Ever The Volvo XC40 premium compact SUV is proving a smash hit across the globe, and the UK is no exception. Selling at twice the Swedish firm’s own sales forecast rate, more than 3,000 XC40s have been sold in the UK since it was launched in a nationwide retailer event in late February. With sales currently at 2,000 cars a month, the XC40 has immediately become the most successful new model launch ever in the UK. These remarkable figures are especially significant because the XC40 is Volvo’s first ever compact SUV, and it is already taking conquest sales from the likes of Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Range Rover. Since it was launched, the XC40 has also won the European Car of the Year and What Car? Car of the Year awards, being praised for its lively performance, quality, style, comfort and safety. The first cars in the UK were the lavishly equipped First Edition XC40s, of which more than 1,000 examples were available. Almost all of these were sold even before the car had arrived in retailer showrooms. The XC40 combines bold design with cutting-edge connectivity, ingenious interior storage and Volvo’s industry-leading safety technology. It is available with a range of petrol and diesel engines, with front- and all-wheel drive, and with a manual or automatic gearbox, allowing customers to choose the perfect XC40 for them.
