Blue Water Clothing is growing!

After opening its door three months ago Bluebird Fine art at Mercia Marina has enjoyed a fantastic response to the gallery and the artwork on display. With a constant turnaround of artwork and a very diverse range they hope to offer something for everyone and welcome all to come along and enjoy viewing the collection. They are looking forward to growing the business through the remainder of summer and into winter, with an ever-growing portfolio of artists and plans to hold artists events and exhibitions. They face an exciting future at the popular marina site. Tel: 01283204753 info@bluebirdfineart.co.uk www.bluebirdfineart.co.uk

WILLINGTON Willington has evidence of the oldest settlements, for it was in the flat pasture lands to the east of what is today a bustling village, that extensive traces of human habitation were discovered dating back to the Bronze Age, including a cursus, one of those enigmatic features that so far have defied accurate interpretation.

SWARKESTONE

Swarkestone a few miles to the east, also had a population possibly rather scattered in the Bronze Age. Swarkestone Lowes just NW of the village marks the site of a cluster of high-status burials. Indeed it may be that the relatively dense Bronze Age population of Willington was lorded over by the grandees buried at Swarkestone. Swarkestone Bridge is always represented as Medieval, but its origin was without doubt a pre-Roman causeway across the flood plain of the Trent with a ford across the river itself, which is narrow at that point.

MERCIA MARINA

Take time out to browse the fantastic range of shops and eateries at Mercia Marina, the largest inland marina in Europe. Enjoying stunning waterside views and located between the villages of Findern and Willington, Mercia Marina is well worth a visit.

MELBOURNE

Before the re-establishment of the monastery (for men only this time) Repton was far outshone by Melbourne, a Saxon era settlement, which has the most substantial and important church in the middle Trent Valley.

ETWALL

Repton has an interesting connection with Etwall, for Repton School’s founder, Sir John Port, endowed it with lands from his Etwall Hall estate and built the master of the charity he set up a fine house at Etwall, now rebuilt in Regency Gothic, as Etwall Lawn.

HILTON

Hilton is almost an extension of Etwall these days, but it is very distinct. Ownership was split very early in Medieval times and it never had a parish church nor manor house, its proprietors all having such luxuries available to them elsewhere. Mind you, it does have one of Derbyshire’s few remaining timber framed gentry houses in the shape of Wakelyn Old Hall, now refurbished to a high standard after years of being semi-derelict.

BURTON

Nestled in East Staffordshire, Burton has a rich brewing industry that continues to thrive. Originally built around Burton Abbey it continued to spread outwards and become industrially strong as a market town with the extension of the River Trent Navigation.

A true taste of India Set in a delightful position at Mercia Marina, Lotus Indian Kitchen affords you the opportunity to get the true taste of Indian food at a restaurant with plenty of ambience whilst surrounded by earth’s natural treats. If it’s a quick bite, (they are open from 11.30am to 10.30pm each day) or the full dining experience including streetfood, grills and curries just like you’d get in India, there’s plenty on the menu to delight your taste buds. Everyone concerned at Lotus Indian Kitchen is dedicated to providing diners with the complete experience. The restaurant is owned by Sanj Kumar and Sunny Chandhoke, who have worked closely with Vid Patel to bring a new concept of Indian dining to Derby. Whilst sharing sumptuous dishes with friends or relatives in the light airy restaurant bedecked with antique artefacts and modern graphic art from India you can also see the chefs working away preparing your dish and as a twist, there isn’t a tablecloth in sight in this rustic informal setting. The idea of eating ‘tapas style’ is that each

person orders two or three dishes then these can be shared by everyone around the table (that’s if you want to share yours!) and, even better, you can stagger their arrival to match your dining speed or you might prefer grills and streetfood as starters followed by curries as mains. Whilst chatting to friends and making a decision on your meal, make a start with Farfar and Chutneys from the streetfood and grills menu to whet your appetite. From there on the choice is yours depending on your taste. A point to remember is all meals are cooked to a medium chilli level so if you want stronger just ask. A trip to the Lotus Indian Kitchen website can give you the complete picture of what Lotus Indian Kitchen can offer the discerning diner. www.lotusindian.co.uk

Murray’s Funeral Directors

serving South Derbyshire and Derby from our branch in Findern.

The freedom of flying A light aircraft flying over Derbyshire gives you an unobstructed grandstand view of the fabulous natural environment in which we live. Experience the joy and excitement of flying, soaring above the beautiful Derbyshire countryside. Take a bird’s eye view of your favourite landmarks – maybe it’s Carsington Water Reservoir, Dovedale, Froggatt Edge, Chatsworth House, Ladybower Dams or your own home area. Taking hold of the flying controls, you can really experience the freedom of flying. Derby Aero Club offers a wide range of flying services including tuition for the Private Pilots Licence. Flying from its home base at Derby Airfield, Egginton, the club caters for all ages. Recently a number of our younger students have achieved their first solo flight at the youngest legal age of 16.

When Sue and Dave Barke started their company Murray’s Funeral Directors in Burton upon Trent back in 1999, one of the things they felt passionate about was being able to serve the local community from a base within the local community. So as they became better known in the area and started helping families in Derby and South Derbyshire, they were determined to find a base from which they would be able to provide the complete service. With this in mind their office in Findern has fully equipped chapel of rest, quiet room and arranging rooms. This means that a funeral can be carried out without the need to transport your loved one to other branches. There is ample car parking and the whole area is accessible for persons of reduced mobility. They offer both traditional and contemporary funerals and pre payment plans to suit all needs.

We’re here for you in your time of need, day or night…

Derby Airfield is also the home of the Comet Racer restoration project. A team of volunteers are working hard restoring Comet Racer G-ACSP that was originally flown by Amy Johnson and husband Jim Mollison in 1934, in the air race from England to Australia. Why not come along to the airfield on a fine day and sit with a cup of tea, watching the aeroplanes come and go, or purchase a ‘Trial Lesson’ as a gift for someone special or even for yourself? A trial flying lesson makes an ideal present, gift vouchers are available from the Derby Aero Club.

A night under the stars at Calwich Under Canvas

W

hen we were offered the chance to stay at Calwich Under Canvas in a luxury yurt, we jumped at the opportunity as it’s something we’ve always fancied doing as a family.

and is run by Jason and his family who live on site. They have 3 yurts which each sleep up to 4 people, and have the use of a woodfired sauna and hot tub on site, which on arrival we selected the time we wanted to use the facilities and Jason made sure the fire was lit and that the hot tub was ready for us to use. There is also a wooden yurt for couples which boasts its own private hot tub.

We weren’t quite sure what to expect or even what to take with us, so it was all very new and exciting. We arrived at Calwich one warm and sunny afternoon and were really impressed to see how luxurious the whole experience was in this stunningly beautiful setting on the edge of the Peak District, although only 5 mins drive from Ashbourne. This is the perfect answer for people who want to go rural without enduring the basics of camping.

When we arrived we were shown around the site, and the facilities which can only be described as on a par with a luxury 5 star hotel. The showers were stunning, beautifully designed to a very high specification, complete with hairdryer and ghd straighteners.

The small, tranquil site was opened just over 2 years ago

20 | CountryImagesMagazine.co.uk

We received a welcome breakfast hamper which included fresh bread, eggs, sausages, bacon, beans, tomatoes, mushrooms, butter and juice. A lovely welcome! We weren’t sure what cooking facilities there would be,

but we found a huge modern fitted kitchen space with two range cookers, two fridge freezers, lots of cupboards, pots, pans and everything you could wish for as well as two charcoal bbq’s, so we could just wheel one up to the yurt for dinner.

playing football. They loved picking the fresh cherries from the huge, old cherry tree and devouring them. That night they were asleep as soon as their heads touched the pillows and slept soundly while we sat out on the deck under the stars and enjoyed some quiet time together.

As you can see from the photographs the yurts are large, spacious and luxurious. They have everything you need in them plus more; fluffy white towels and towelling robes, comfortable large beds and crisp white linen. There is no electricity, so we were supplied with candles, torches and lanterns which was so romantic in the evening. Each yurt has its own log burner which Jason will light for you in the evening. Although it was a lovely balmy evening for our stay, I can imagine nothing cosier than sitting by a roaring fire on a chilly autumn evening.

We went to sleep staring at the stars through the clear roof of the yurt and woke up to a perfect morning of bright sunshine, and a hearty breakfast. Our only regret was that we wish we could have had longer there to relax. We really enjoyed our time as a family, but were interested to hear that they hope to open a communal space for people who wish to book the whole site for parties, anniversaries and family get-togethers so that they have a space to meet up and socialise too.

Our boys were happily occupied playing football in the field, (accompanied by Jason who seemed to enjoy himself too!) and we had a great time playing games using the equipment stored in the basket in the corner of the kitchen. Because we had the boys with us Jason had lowered the temperature of the hot tub so that it was slightly cooler, which was really perfect as it was such a hot summer day, we could have even enjoyed it cold! The boys loved it. Absolutely nothing is too much trouble for Jason and Sarah and no amount of photographs can show how peaceful, tranquil and beautiful this site really is. You feel so away from it all, in another world and yet with all the luxuries you could wish for. Our boys loved all the freedom of the open spaces to play in and the toys, and thoroughly enjoyed

Luxury Yurts on the Edge of the Peak District Our yurts are perfect for couples, families and friends and can accommodate up to four people. Each yurt is tastefully furnished, has a log burner and its own decking area. There is a hot-tub and sauna to use, along with stunning washrooms, with underfloor heating and a fully equipped large kitchen area.

The

Andulucia Touch Winding our way up the hills into the Andulucia area of Spain from Malaga airport afforded the opportunity to travel at the same level as the buzzards, not quite so spectacular were the moans of “I feel sick” from the back of the Mercedes Vito. We didn’t stop, as we knew it would soon pass! Cruel but true, safe in the knowledge that promises of ‘Grande Cervesa’ would be enough to cure it.

T

here were two routes to Ronda, our destination: via Cartama, Pizzara and El Burgo, or my favourite, to follow the AP-7 as far as San Pedro and then up the A-397. Just look at it on the map and see how it meanders it’s way to Ronda. We started this climb on an unusually cloudy day in July and visibility at times was pretty poor. After about an hour we suddenly came through the cloud and broke out into bright sunshine. It was as though someone had just switched a light on taking us all by surprise and part cured the travel sickness! We then realised

how high we had climbed as we were level with a buzzard floating not 100 yards across the ravine. Concentration however is needed on this road and I wouldn’t recommend it to the tired driver. But this is the road to go up, not come down as that’s slightly scary in a hire car with brakes that aren’t 100%. Ronda is and always will be in my top five destinations in Europe. This moorish town has seen a lot of action and boasts the most delightful gorge. Walks around the walls take you straight back in time.

If it’s stunning views and instant access from your hotel to an old town you require, you can’t do better than the Parador du Ronda, it’s smack on the edge of the gorge and sports a variety of rooms including duplex rooms complete with long balconies ideal for partying on. The pool isn’t huge but is in the right place for the sun. The terrace wraps around the hotel and again offers views over the valley below. As is normal in Spain there’s always someone playing Cavatina on a guitar. I was heartily sick of the guy in the square who played it constantly, I wished he’d learned CountryImagesMagazine.co.uk | 27

Ronda

Ronda another song to go with it. Every time we went out, there he was selling CDs of himself playing 12 songs. Yes, in case you’re wondering, I did pick one up to look and see if he could play anything else. So why didn’t he?

to put up with people opening their car doors on your back; check their web site and you’ll see I’m not joking when I say that as they are all seated on the street corner. It’s the place to go for a great night out.

The gorge separates the new(!) 15th century town from the old Moorish one. The stone bridge ‘Puente Nuevo’ spans the gorge and if it’s open you can pay to go down into the gaol built into the bridge. Just off the square is the famous 18th century bullring where you can hear crowds roaring occasionally when it is still in use.

A short walk from the Parador Hotel to the park shows what family life is like here. Children playing, parents talking, grandparents sitting watching and the occasional dog wandering about. At 10.30pm all the park gates were locked, which took us by surprise as our villa was 50 yards from the park through a small gate and we then had to walk about a mile around the park to get back to our villa. It was a learning curve, from park ‘throwing out time’ everyone either goes home or to one of the bars in and around town and life continues until the early hours. Further into the square where many of the restaurants are, opposite the church, the children were enjoying a game of football with a small crowd of spectators. The fountain was the apparent goalpost at one end and the steps to the underground car park at the other. No one minded the game though. Everyone muddled in and if the ball came your way you just sent it back.

On the Moorish side of town is Palacio de Mondragon, a public museum in a 14th century house. Just along from the museum is Parca Duquesa de Parcent where a small bar serves excellent coffee and cakes. The park also comes complete with Cavatina playing guitarist selling records. This one has an amplifier too, so his mistakes can be heard clearly. Further out of town and easy to walk to is Barrio de San Francisco. The bar Bodego San Francisco, on the street corner, is tremendous value for money with tapas food the best I had in the area and was able to observe the world go by. You have 28 | CountryImagesMagazine.co.uk

Each morning an early walk into the town to avoid the tourists(!) afforded us the opportunity to enjoy ‘pan con tomate’ and coffee or ‘Churros with chocolate dipping sauce’ all served at speed with no moans. Just wave and the coffee keeps coming. Peeping through a rather large door about a quarter of a mile from town centre I was quite surprised when it opened to reveal a cavernous shop that specialised in port. The guy beckoned me in and even though we had no idea what each other was talking about, sign language was enough to show that I was being offered port and wine to try. I had a terrific time in the very cool, partly shaded shop, looking and trying his wares. (Oh and buying a bottle or two). Canny folk these Andalucians. Coach trips from the coast pour into Ronda at about 10.00 and disappear at 3.30. These trips seem to have become less over the years as the tough economy bit deep and Ronda’s shops suffered a little, but nothing can alter the beauty, position and history of this place for me. It’s a must visit at anytime. Just off the square on Calle de Lorenzo is Michael Angelo’s a family owned

pizza restaurant that makes the best Calzone going. I have yet to experience one as good or prices so reasonable. In the square itself there are the traditional restaurants and bars that will leave you spoilt for choice. A short drive west from Ronda is the village of Montejaque. It’s a typical sleepy Spanish village. Behind curtained doors are shops, bars and people just doing everyday things. We had visited this village years earlier on market day Thursday and, in the middle of the village was, and still is, a bar but now under new ownership. We were greeted by the former owner with “Jimmy Johnson, he my friend, come inside”. The place was bedecked with Glasgow Celtic memorabilia. Football really travels. The village itself boasts two reasonably priced hotels.

The park at sunset

Many companies offer villas in Ronda and it’s surrounding towns. Getting on the west side of town affords the best views of the valley. There are large and small hotels plus a number of villas some with quite breath taking views and pools.

and the Spanish keep driving at you expecting you to move so parking on the edge of town is advisable. Walking through the town with rocks overhanging is quite unnerving but life goes on as normal. There’s plenty of restaurants here so a day out would work well.

Setenil, a few miles north of Ronda is very popular with houses that are built into overhanging rock. The streets are pretty narrow

As we had a full day spare to get to the airport home we decided to go west from Ronda,

through Montejaque and then drop south via Jubrique. If you want to explore the wisdom of that decision just check it out on a map first. It was an adventure especially as one of the hire cars seemed to have dodgy brakes so, on the steep downhill bits, I was braking for two as we went nose to tail. Well, what are holidays for if you can’t have a bit of adventure. Strangely no-one felt sick going home! CountryImagesMagazine.co.uk | 29

The Lost Houses

of Derbyshire by Maxwell Craven

Pinxton Castle Local legend assigns Pinxton Castle the positively romantic role of being the birthplace of Fair Rosamond de Clifford, the celebrated mistress of Henry II, ‘born in a castle close to the church’.

have no trouble living with materialism but sometimes rampant materialism can do hideous damage to important landscapes, historic buildings or archaeological sites.

A case in point is the so-called Pinxton Castle, otherwise known as Wynn’s Castle, situated right up against the eastern Derbyshire border by Junction 28 of the M1. Indeed, the county boundary kinks round it, underlining the age of the original demesne. Uninhabited since the fourteenth century, this fortified manor house decayed away inside a small park embellished with fishponds for centuries until the M1 and the A38 made their intersection here in the 1960s. This was bad enough, but when a large shopping village – admittedly replacing the old Normanton Colliery, but just as substantial and intrusive - was built within the last few years, the encroachment on three sides became excessive. Now a huge development has taken place

The Lost Houses

of Derbyshire by Maxwell Craven right up against the south side of the site, too, which has even caused the authorities to block off footpath access. It has, in short, ended up spoilt, sad and desperately out-of-context. As it is a scheduled ancient monument, one can only say that the County Council of the 1980s (and the local council) should be ashamed of themselves for allowing things to get to this pass.

The motte seen from the south; note the dry moat, right, and part of the earlier earthwork, left. [L. Wyatt] The moat, SW angle [Private collection]

32 | CountryImagesMagazine.co.uk

Almost totally lost within Castle Wood, Pinxton Castle consists of an approximately rectangular dried up moat averaging 35 feet in width and today with less than six feet to the bottom. This is orientated with its angles on the cardinal points of the compass, northwest of which is a more substantial dyke running NW to SE with a conical mound of oval plan about 65 feet wide and 10 feet in height: this represents the remains of the motte or conical mound upon which once stood a timber Norman keep, from which the site derives its soubriquet of ‘castle’. The building platform atop the motte measures some 66 feet, plenty of room for a structure from which the newly arrived Norman lord could use to keep order within his no doubt turbulent demesnes. The motte would have originally been surrounded by a bailey, or banked enclosure topped by a

timber palisade, traces of which appear to survive parallel to the SW part of the moat. North of the motte is a building platform thought to have formed the base of a later gatehouse, and when the moated manor was built in the 13th century, it was plonked inside the motte’s bailey, and the earlier defences adapted as a perimeter wall with its NW gatehouse.

Local legend assigns it the positively romantic role of being the birthplace of Fair Rosamond de Clifford, the celebrated mistress of Henry II, ‘born in a castle close to the church’. In truth the de Cliffords were then a Welsh Marcher family and had no connection with Pinxton, so the tale is highly unlikely, although the church might have had a timber predecessor.

It may even be that the motte’s timber tower was partly replaced in stone, for carved architectural stonework of a secular nature has been identified within the fabric of the church of St. Helen, Pinxton, known to have been built in 1299, which date may well mark the dismantling of the true ‘castle’ and its replacement by the moated manor. To carry the dressed stone half a mile for re-use would have saved expense of procuring new freshly carved ashlar.

Pinxton is unusual though, because the parish lies in both the counties of Derby and Nottingham. This is because it was included in the western extension of the Royal Forest of Sherwood,

Excavations by the Pinxton Archaeological Society led by G E Monk in 1951 were severely hampered by tree roots but revealed traces of a hall house within the moat measuring about 30 feet by 23, although the building was probably more complex than a simple hall. A late 12th century carved stone capital was discovered, implying a high-status stone building unless it was one piece of the keep on the motte that wasn’t required as stone for the new church. Also identified was a row of substantial post holes, implying a timber-framed probable hall. Unfortunately, the records of the excavation itself have been lost but it is assumed that the society was responsible for uncovering the overgrown building remains which are currently visible and include the level floors of small structures, wall footings and trenches, sandstone rubble and pieces of brick and roof tile. Some of these remains may belong to a farmhouse or outbuildings built on the site after its abandonment as a major residence, and they may overlie further evidence of the moated house. There were also found a number of superb serrated green glazed roof tiles, which I incorporated into a display in Derby Museum when my colleagues and I re-displayed the Archaeology Gallery in 1983. Similar ones have been spotted in the garden of much later Stanton Old Hall in the Peak district. The later manifestation of the site is associated with a series of five well preserved fishponds, one still waterfilled. The mound, in the past interpreted as a collapsed motte, is difficult to interpret, but one may safely conclude that the subsequent house was not strictly speaking a castle in the accepted sense.

H

anciently known as Fulwood, and probably predates the time when Derbyshire was detached as an administrative unit from Nottinghamshire in the early eleventh century. Nor does Pinxton feature in Domesday Book but the lost place name of Snodeswic or Esnotrewic which does appear in it, as well as in the famous donation of Wulfric Spot of 1004 to found Burton Abbey, is believed to refer to it. Although a Roger Le Wyne is allegedly associated with the site in the mid-12th century (probably as the constable or castellan), we do not hear

The Lost Houses

of Derbyshire by Maxwell Craven anything very positive about it until about 1220, the chief lord, Robert de Alfreton, granted the manors of Normanton and Pinxton to his tenant at the latter place, Ralph le Poer, whose father Roger le Poer was in some way connected to the de Codnors of Codnor Castle, predecessors of the Greys. The late 12th century carved stone capital from Pinxton Castle must therefore date from his time. Esnotrewic was held in 1086 by one Drogo – from his name of Norse or Norman stock – who was, in all probability, Roger le Poer’s grandfather; he held the manor under William Peveril. Ralph must have been pretty young at this stage, for his son and heir, Ralph, was recorded as himself being as under age in 1252, thirty two years later. He, however, seems to have died quite young, for his two sisters and co-heiresses were made wards of St. Thomas de Cantilupe, Bishop of Hereford, from whom their father had held an

DERBY’S LARGEST AND MO

estate - although where it was is not clear; perhaps in Ilkeston area, where the Cantilupes had their Derbyshire seat. The elder, Dionysia – she would be Denise today - married Robert le Wyne, probably a descendant of Sir Roger, and it was Dionysia who inherited the house and estate – hence, of course, its alternative name, Wynne’s Castle. It had passed to her son Ralph by 1278. The Le Wynes took their name from a Saxon, Leofwine. Although a common Saxon name, this particular Leofwine may probably have been the man of that name who retained, post Conquest, his estate at Temple Normanton and also held Handley and Coal Aston. His descendant, Adam son of Godwin le Wyne or FitzLewin, was a lead speculator, for he was granted 60 acres of lead-rich land near Wirksworth early in the 13th century by Sir Robert de Stanton of Stanton-inPeak.

Dionysia’s grandson Sir William le Wyne lost his wife and probably any sons he had in the Black Death, leaving him with an only daughter named Dionysia after her great-grandmother. She was probably unmarried and past child-bearing in 1356 when he sold the whole estate to Sir Alured de Solney of Newton Solney, who was the grandson of the elder Dionysia’s sister Margery. Young Dionysia was, however, allowed to retain Pinxton for her lifetime, being still described as ‘Lady of Pinxton’ in 1375. The family did not, however, die out, as three of Sir Walter’s uncles continued as Wirksworth area lead traders up to the time of the Black Death and one indeed may have been the progenitor of the Levinges of Parwich Hall. Funnily enough, the Poers hadn’t died out either. Anthony Poe (the name then being articulated with an umlaut over the ‘e’ rather than a final “r”) went to Ireland with Charles Blount, 1st Earl of Devonshire, settled and founded a large family, from whom descended the extinct Poe-Domville baronets, extinct in the 1960s and the Le PoerBeresfords.

To revert to Anthony Poe, for a moment, his grandfather Richard Poe was proprietor of a locality in Pinxton called Poesfield. He was also a Forester-in-Fee of the Royal Forest, and was living in Henry VIII’s time. Furthermore, it emerges from Thoroton’s History of Nottinghamshire that he was descended from a Robert le Poer who had a small estate just in Nottinghamshire hereabouts and whose posterity held a forestership of Sherwood by hereditary right. It cannot have been a co-incidence that the farm once butting onto the demesne of the Pinxton Castle was Range Farm, deriving from Armorial bearings of Poe [M. Craven] Ranger Farm, and is thought to have been their residence. Poesfield is in all probability the ancient name of the site, and probably represents a portion of the estate settled on Ranulph fitz Roger le Poer, the younger brother of the Ralph who was granted the Lordship of Pinxton by baths • showers • toilets • shower enclosures • basins • furn Robert de Alfreton way back in 1220.

gradually abandoned. The de Solneys, after all, had a seat at Newton Solney, and their successors at Pinxton, the Longfords had theirs, of course, at Longford. It was only when the Cokes acquired the estate at Pinxton in the 17th century that anyone thought to live there again. The fact that they built a new house, Brookhill Hall, nearby, would seem to confirm that the old moated manor house of the Poes and Le Wynes had long since mouldered into ruin.

G

as safety is important all year round, but it is not always a household’s top priority. Gas Safety Week - coordinated by Gas Safe Register - provides a platform for the gas industry, consumer organisations and individuals to focus all our communications about gas safety in one week, generating interest in the media and having a greater impact amongst the public.

Anyone who uses gas in their home needs to be aware of the gas risks and how to keep safe. There has been a great deal of support for Gas Safety Week from MPs throughout the years. Several MPs have recorded messages urging their constituents and the public to have their gas appliances safety checked each year by a Gas Safe registered engineer and warned of the dangers of carbon monoxide.

Get your gas appliances checked by a Gas Safe registered engineer

Six simple steps to help keep you safe and warm in your home

1 Only use a Gas Safe registered engineer to fit, fix and service your appliances. You can find and check an engineer at GasSafeRegister.co.uk 2 Check both sides of your engineer’s Gas Safe Register ID card. Make sure they are qualified for the work you need doing. You can find this information on the back of the card. 3 Have all your gas appliances regularly serviced and safety checked every year. If you rent your home ask for a copy of the landlord’s current Gas Safety Record. 4 Know the six signs of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning – headaches, dizziness, breathlessness, nausea, collapse and loss of consciousness. Unsafe gas appliances can put you at risk of CO poisoning, gas leaks, fires and explosions. 5 Check gas appliances for warning signs that they are not working properly e.g. lazy yellow flames instead of crisp blue ones, black marks or stains on or around the appliance and too much condensation in the room. 6 Fit an audible carbon monoxide alarm. This will alert you if there is carbon monoxide in your home.

Royal Mint Collectors’ Coins 2018 gold proof 5-coin commemorative set in plastic capsules and presentation box of issue [Royal Mint]

O

One of the tasks I seem to spend vast quantities of time on when I am working at Bamfords is cataloguing collections of coins. Much of what comes in is base metal and well used, and has little value; some is in various purities of silver and needs sorting. If circulated, everything not a rarity is estimated at bullion price. Collectors though like their coins in the best possible condition, even, if possible the scarce and rare ones.

ther collectors buy new issues from the Mint direct so that they do not have to worry about the arcane business of grading for wear. The Mint issues coins either in brilliant uncirculated (BU) condition (that is, as first issued), or proof. The latter is when the specimens are struck from specially polished dies, giving the field a mirrorlike brilliance, and often, these days, with the relief portions of the design given a frosted finish to enhance the contrast. The mint tends to issue both base metal and precious metal examples of most issues and, since realising how much extra money they can make from having several different commemoratives each year, there is a bewildering choice. Furthermore, buying direct means that one pays a premium even for the simplest (card folder) packaging, let alone de luxe and executive packaging, involving hefty leather and satin rich presentation boxes. The coins themselves, if BU, are worth their face value; the mint’s packaging thus makes them expensive to buy and takes a couple of generations

to recoup the outlay. For instance, as I write, today’s paper carries an advertisement from the Mint about a Paddington Bear 50p issue, which is BU base metal and can be yours for £3.99 plus postage: that is, a mark-up of £3.49. If the issue is proof, then it loses value less and, of course, with issues struck in precious metals at least their bullion value remains in line with gold and silver process generally. Yet in both cases the purchase price includes a hefty mark-up to cover manufacturing costs (special dies) and better grade packaging. Proof coins have been officially issued since 1887 (earlier ones were strictly unofficial, especially prior to 1731/32), as have another popular collector’s item, the specimen set: in these one buys all the coins issued for a particular year in a special package, either BU, proof or precious metal proofs. Specimen sets used to be issued only at the beginning of a new reign or when the obverse (head side) changed, eg. 1887, 1893, 1902. 1911, 1927. 1937 and so on. It was not until 1977 that yearly specimen sets became regular,

although at first they were BU only and base metal, until 1981 when the £5 coin and sovereign were included. Indeed, gold only sets - £5, £2 sovereign and half sovereign) were issued in 1982, although the £2 was thereafter dropped, re-appearing as a base metal coin from 1986 and regularly a decade later. With so much choice, collecting from new becomes a matter of deciding what you like and can afford, but do not expect your investment to grow for a considerable time, unless you are well enough off to collect bullion coins. Many collectors stick to crown coins – old 5/-, then 25p but more recently with face value of £5. Again, there are many commemorative issues. There are at least one commemorative each year these days, and one can collect the standard £5 coin from your bank or building society, but there are also base metal proofs, silver proofs and gold ones, too. Furthermore, sometimes the proofs are struck double thickness – called a piedfort – and since 2004 these have also been issued in platinum – current list price £4,000 plus! I shall cover commemorative crowns on another occasion, however. Well-struck coins are essentially a miniature work of art, but the best way to collect them is to buy at auction, preferably in their unopened sets. Whereas today you might pay £55 for this year’s specimen BU set, £95 for the current commemoratives in a set (£5 Prince Louis, three £2: RAF, Armistice and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and a 50p for the 1918 Representation of the People Act), you then could also shell out £210 for a premium proof set and no less than £550 for the silver proof set struck as piedforts. At auction in a year or two, when collections get to the saleroom, prices are going to be more like £20, £45, £80 and £285 respectively. Incidentally, the 5 coin commemorative set also comes in gold (at a price). The latest trend, started by the private mints (like Pobjoy, Westminster, London Mint Office etc., mainly at the instigation of the marketing executives of various insular crown colonies etc.) has been to issue proofs in base metal or bullion with coloured enamel designs: hence the Royal mint

will now sell you a Peter Rabbit set or a Winnie the Pooh set (both basically 50 pence coins) with coloured Peter or Winnie in various engaging contexts. The former is a set of four, the latter only two, and will cost you 10p BU or £60 enamelled, whilst there is no reduction if you buy the coins in a set, for while the Peter Rabbit sequence is not sold as a set, for Paddington’s set of two - £120; you can even order the latter in gold, a snip at £780! The sensible thing to do is to concentrate on a particular period, like specimen sets pre-2000, or pre-decimal issues and buy at auction or from reputable dealers. That way you will accumulate really rather attractive coins, mainly attractively packaged, which will also have a chance of appreciating. And, of course, rarity counts, so buy a price guide: Seaby, Coin News and MyHobbyStore all produce helpful ones, but most important, the former two both give mintages which will guide you as to rarity.

August 2018

There are several highlights of my horticultural year and one of them is the HTA National Plant Show. This fantastic show is a chance to see all the latest varieties of trees, shrubs, climbers, houseplants, bedding plants, vegetable plants and new planting ideas. This year again over 300 different varieties – most being judged on the day. Sadly this is a trade only show, which is a shame due to the exciting varieties on offer. Many of these will be in a garden centre near you this time next year. Allotment or Vegetable Patch: • Once onion tops start to die down they can be lifted • If ready, pick your plums now; be careful how you handle them as they can bruise. • Use netting on autumn fruiting raspberries or blackberries to protect them from birds. • Pick early fruiting varieties of apples now. • Feed fruit trees and bushes with liquid sulphate of potash, such as a tomato feed. This will work quickly especially if the leaves are looking very yellow. • Buy onion sets now for autumn planting. • Water celery and other crops regularly in hot, dry weather. • Veg to sow now include swedes, spring cabbages, and beetroot for leaves, winter lettuces, radishes, coriander, and Japanese onions.

• Sow green manure in any bare spaces in your plot.

In the Greenhouse: • Pick off any lower leaves from tomatoes so air and light can reach the fruit, and water regularly to help prevent fruit splitting or blossom end rot. • If it`s still warm, look out for signs of red spider mite and treat with a systemic insecticide right away. • Thin out weaker looking bunches of indoor grapes. • Keep a look out for vine weevil beetles – usually crawling across paths or around the bottom of pots. • If going on holiday this month, set up a watering area using a growbag tray and some

capillary matting. • Water down the greenhouse floor each morning on hot days to increase humidity. • Open all vents and prop doors open on warm days to improve ventilation, this will help reduce fungal problems. • Shade delicate plants on hot, sunny days to prevent scorch.

General Garden Maintenance: • Carry on feeding lawns with a suitable fertiliser and moss killer. • Keep mowing the lawn regularly, and if there is a heavy rain fall remember to keep spiking and sanding the lawn. • Remember to water newly planted trees and shrubs well, if there is a lack of rain. • Feed any established trees and shrubs with a suitable granular fertiliser. • Check roses for signs of black spot, take off leaves and treat with fungicide. Remember don’t compost any diseased leaves, always put them in the garden waste bin. • Apply bark mulches around newly planted or established trees and shrubs to help suppress weeds. • Top up bird baths regularly with fresh water. • If available in your local garden centre or plant nursery, plant any spring flowering bulbs now. • If summer bedding looks tired – dig these up and put them in your compost heap.

Plants that impressed me at the show: Hydrangea paniculata “Polestar”, dwarf “tree” hydrangea with lacecap-like pink and white flowers. Ideal for a container – and doesn’t require any special compost.

48 | CountryImagesMagazine.co.uk

More hydrangea (there were over 15 new varieties), this one is hydrangea macrophylla “Campano” you cannot tell from the photo but this is a bi-colour almost tie-dye effect. Worryingly the breeder named the pink and the blue the same name – I know the colour can be changed, but still.

I never like to pick favourites, because they normally change ! but this was simply incredible – zantedeschia “Frozen Planet” , pure white and green new leaves that mature to translucent with the contrast of the deep burgundy / purple flowers.

Another show-stopper dahila “Hypnotica Icurus” – this was one of the few plants I said wow out loud to. Definitely on my list for next year.

If you are only going to buy one from this list, rosa “Timeless Purple” – stunning scent and great colour, there is also “Timeless Cream” and “Timeless Yellow” all with great disease resistance and long flowering periods.

Loropetalum is in my top 3 of favourite plants in my garden but my only issue was the hot pink flowers, this new variety “Ruby Snow” has pure white flowers. Evergreen and ideal for containers as it only gets to 3ft maximum.

Digitalis “Firebird” – another great hardy variety of Foxglove that has sensational colour and is extremely free flowering.

Ergnigum “Magical Silver” and Ergnigum “Magical Blue Lagoon” both stunning varieties – both would work really well together in a border as they grow to the same height and width, small flowers but masses of them.

There were so many plants I wanted to include, but ran out of space! I cannot wait for all of these and the many more to come out in the future. Creepy Crawlies upholstered furniture. Household sprays work well but always read the label before use and make sure fleas are the only live things left in the room! Unfortunately, nothing in our arsenal can kill the pupae stage of the flea life-cycle, because of this, regular and thorough cleaning weekly is often the best technique to fully rid the home.

Summertime

brings us long days, BBQs and good weather (most of the time), but it also brings an increased risk of finding creepy crawlies on our pets. Most ectoparasites (parasites that live on the outside of your pet) found on our furry friends are just a nuisance for ourselves and our pets but some can carry life threatening diseases.

Ticks

Fleas The most common parasite found on cats and dogs is the flea. They can turn up on the cleanest pet and in the most spotless of homes. For most pets, fleas are an irritation but fleas can have the potential to cause allergic reactions, spread tapeworms and in young, old or diseased animals, there is the potential for severe blood loss and even death. If your dog has an itch it could be fleas. Excessive scratching can cause hair loss, redness, thickened skin and infections. Combing your pet is the best way to check for fleas; look out for live fleas or little dark specks in the coat. Treating your pet with a veterinary advised flea treatment is the best way to clear the infestation, however, pets can become repeatedly infected or you may find bites on your own body. If this is the case, it is important to treat the home as well. Fleas can live for months in sofas, beds, carpets and anywhere they can squeeze into! Wash all bedding at 60°C weekly and regularly vacuum floors and

Ticks are becoming a lot more common in the U.K, and with global warming, it’s set to worsen. Dogs will often pick them up after spending time in long grass, shrubs or heathland. When they attach themselves, they will typically feed on your pets blood for 8-12 days before detaching. The biggest concern for vets is the diseases ticks can carry, namely Lyme’s disease, Ehrlichiosis and Babesiosis. All the diseases can cause death and spread only by ticks. Lymes disease causes the Bulls-eye rash, lethargy, fever and lameness. Ehrlichiosis and Babesiosis typically cause a high fever and a loss of appetite while Babesiosis can cause coffee coloured urine. If any of these signs are seen in your pet, you should seek veterinary advice immediately.

Unfortunately, the old wives tales of drowning the tick in alcohol and burning the tick does not work. Equally, do not attempt to remove the tick with your bare hands as you could be at risk of catching the diseases too. Tick removers are available at most vets and pet shops and are undoubtedly the best tool for the job. Grasping the tick as close to the skin as possible, with tweezers and pulling sharply is the next best technique. Once removed, check the mouthpiece is not left embedded in the skin as these can become infected or continue to spread disease. If you are concerned about removing the tick, visit your local vet and they’d be happy to help.

Prevention not cure. Keeping your pet up to date with regular ectoparasite treatment is the best way of preventing home infestations or deadly diseases. Supermarket products do not cover against ticks and are often inadequate at preventing fleas. Give your veterinarian a call to see which treatment would provide your pet with the most comprehensive cover.

Prompt identification and removal of ticks drastically reduces the chance of catching a disease. After a trip to the Peaks or a wander through the park, check around your dogs face, underbelly and inside legs. Ticks come in a range of shapes and sizes as they feed. They can be as small as a pinhead and as large as your fingernail. Their colour ranges from cream and grey to browns, and are often described as small pebbles or mistaken for warts/ skin tags.

e’s known as a magazine editor, journalist, screenwriter and television comedy quiz show panellist. Now Ian Hislop has revealed yet another talent: playwright. The editor of Private Eye and one of the captains on Have I Got News For You has been collaborating with Nick Newman since they were at boarding school and they are bringing to Nottingham their play The Wipers Times.

Steve Orme interviews

Ian Hislop & Nick Newman

I

an sticks to what he knows well: The Wipers Times tells the true, extraordinary story of a satirical newspaper created in the mud and mayhem of the Somme. He says: “I was presenting a documentary about the First World War. I came across a reference to The Wipers Times and there was a joke quoted from one issue. I followed it up and I could see that it made the most brilliant story which was much too good to be used in a mere documentary.” Nick adds: “What was so extraordinary about it was the fact that it was original source material, written on the frontline by troops on active service. What stood out was that it was genuinely funny and that the jokes had survived the test of time. “We wanted to revisit the material in some way so we wrote a three-page document about how we’d recreate the theatre of war. We put the idea of making a film about The Wipers Times to the BBC and we then heard nothing for ten years! “This was in 2003. Nobody was interested in the subject. Then along came Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks, War Horse at the National Theatre and in the West End, and the Spielberg film. “Paradoxically this revival of interest in the period worked against us. Who’d want to put on a play or make a film that’s set in World War One when Birdsong and War Horse had been so successful?

“Audiences were looking for a different experience. What The Wipers Times was doing at the time was putting a smile back on people’s faces.”

“Then, completely out of the blue, we got a commission to make a drama documentary about The Wipers Times for the BBC as one of the programmes marking the centenary of the war.” The duo believe they had so much trouble selling the idea of The Wipers Times because they were concentrating on a very different aspect of the conflict. “Sometimes you get the impression that nobody ever laughed during the period between 1914 and 1918,” says Ian. “The whole experience of World War One had been coloured by poets publishing in the 1920s and the memoirs and dramas written in the 1930s,” says Nick. “Audiences were looking for a different experience. What The Wipers Times was doing at the time was putting a smile back on people’s faces.” Hislop and Newman have been doing that throughout their careers. They appeared in revues at school together, both went to Oxford University and they worked together on Private Eye. Ian, born on July 13th, 1960, became editor of the satirical magazine in 1986. He is reputedly the most sued man in English legal history. Even before Ian became the boss Nick, born two years earlier, was working for Private Eye as a cartoonist. Their partnership began to thrive. They wrote scripts for the sardonic television series Spitting Image and also penned sketches for The Harry Enfield Show, creating the character Tim Nice-ButDim.

56 | CountryImagesMagazine.co.uk

Ian continues to have the higher profile of the two, joining Have I Got News For You when it started in 1990. He is the only person to have appeared in every episode. The Wipers Times is set in a bombed-out building in the Belgian town of Ypres which British soldiers pronounced Wipers. Two officers, Captain Fred Roberts and Lt Jack Pearson of the 12th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters – a Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire regiment – discover a printing press and create a newspaper for the troops. It was far from being a sombre journal about life in the trenches. The officers produced a resolutely cheerful, subversive and very funny newspaper designed to lift the spirits of the men on the front line. The Wipers Times rolled off the press for two years and was an extraordinary tribute to the soldiers’ resilience in the face of overwhelming adversity. In 2013 the BBC broadcast Ian and Nick’s dramatisation. Captain Roberts was played by Ben Chaplin and Lt Pearson by Julian Rhind-Tutt. Michael Palin and Emilia Fox played supporting roles. But Ian and Nick always had the idea of adapting The Wipers Times for the stage. “All the way through the process, we thought of it as a play,” says Ian. “On the face of it, it’s all jolly poems and spoofs but it’s also very subversive. There’s a letter from a reader asking for advice. Is it permissible, he asks, to shoot a superior officer? He receives the reply that it is, given extenuating circumstances.”

The Wipers Times tells the true, extraordinary story of a satirical newspaper created in the mud and mayhem of the Somme.

The Wipers Times is at the Theatre Royal, Nottingham from 28 August until 1 September. Nick adds: “The film got such a fantastic response that we felt it wasn’t going to represent the end of the story. We’d written our first play, A Bunch of Amateurs, in 2014. It was our first attempt at writing for the stage and it was produced by the Watermill Theatre near Newbury. “It went down so well that the Watermill told us if there was anything else we wanted to do, they’d be interested in seeing it. So we suggested joining forces on The Wipers Times.” The play toured the UK in 2016 and 2017. It also had a run at the Arts Theatre in the West End last year. Now it is touring again for nearly two months before returning to the West End for a seven-week season. There were a number of other trench journals apart from The Wipers Times, so what made it special? Ian has no doubts. “It was funnier - and ruder! I have a friend who’s a captain in the Royal Engineers and she brought a party of her sappers to see the show. I was a little worried about how it would go down with the men but she reassured me. She said that the way the guys were represented was exactly how the guys behaved.” So why should people see the play? “They should come because it’s 100 years since this extraordinary newspaper was first produced,” says Ian.

What stood out was that it was genuinely funny and that the jokes had survived the test of time.

“They should also come as a tribute to these two amazing men who didn’t get a lot of credit in their time for producing The Wipers Times but probably deserve it. So come and see their legacy.” CountryImagesMagazine.co.uk | 57

Around Winster

W

inster is a haphazard cluster of seventeenth and eighteenthcentury houses linked by narrow hillside alleys or ginnels as they are known locally. They sit in a pattern which suited the lead miners and their families in the hey-day of this now extinguished Peak District industry.

The central feature of Winster is a two-storied, late seventeenth-century Market Hall; the first National Trust property in Derbyshire.

The walk follows paths once trodden by miners who, usually in small groups, delved beneath the surrounding heights. Often run on a part-time basis, the miners would be satisfied with a daily input of enough ore to fill their wes’kit (waistcoat) pockets. Small abandoned stone barns, used as stores by these miners, still dot the surrounding fields. At the side of the nearby B5056 Cromford/ Bakewell road, close to its junction with the Newhaven road, a communal lead store has been preserved as an interpretive feature. A little way down the road from it, the Miners’ Standard pub takes its name from the standard dish used to measure quantities of ore. In contrast with this small-time mining activity, the last and most productive lead mine in Derbyshire was nearby at Mill Close. It was still in operation until 1939 when flooding led to its abandonment. The central feature of Winster is a two-storied, late seventeenth-century Market Hall. Standing opposite the co-operatively run village store and post office, it was the first National Trust property in Derbyshire. Winster has its own team of Morris Dancers, and every Shrovetide the women and children of the village hold pancake races along the main street. Parking is difficult in the centre of Winster, but can usually be found roadside to the west (Elton) side of the church, or at a dedicated car park above the village near the Miners’ Standard. The Matlock to Bakewell via Elton bus runs through Winster (but not on a Sunday).

Useful Information 5½ mile (9km), of easy/moderate walking on field paths. The path between Clough Wood and Winster has muddy sections after prolonged rain. Recommended Map: Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 scale Explorer Map, Sheet OL24: White Peak area. Parking: above the village near the Miners’ Standard, or roadside on the Elton road beyond the church. Public Transport: Hulleys 172 Matlock, Winster and Bakewell service runs at 38minutes past the hour Monday to Saturday only. Refreshments: The Bowling Green (side street next to Market Hall, and the Miners’ Standard both serve food.

The Walk with Rambler

Around Winster

• Old Mill Close Mine winding house • Walk up the side street away from the Market Hall and go past the Bowling Green Inn. Turn left at Hope Cottage to follow a footpath signposted to Bonsall. Bear left with it, passing the public toilets and follow a narrow alley, head out of the village. • Using stiles to keep to the grassy path, climb diagonally right across a series of fields. From fields disturbed by ancient lead mining activity, look to your left across the wooded valley. Stanton Moor is to the right and beyond it are the rocks of Robin Hood’s Stride, once known as Mock Beggar’s Hall from its apparent shape in poor light at dusk. Further on, the deep trough of Lathkill Dale cuts a swathe through the limestone plateau. Looking to your right again beyond Stanton Moor, the wide swathe of the Derwent Valley carves its way past Chatsworth and into the gritstone moors of the Dark Peak. • Go through a stile in the wall on your right and turn left following a wall close by Luntor Rocks. Then, following waymarks, incline right, uphill. A fenced-off area below Luntor Rocks marks the site of an abandoned mine shaft. Most mines but not all, are blanked off with concrete beams, or by beehive cairns. Treat every mine shaft with respect for many have unstable sides.

• At the top of the rise, go diagonally left across the level field, heading for a stile in the top wall. • Cross the stile and turn left to follow the moor road for about a quarter of a mile. • By the weight restriction sign, turn left down the first of two adjacent tracks. Keep to your right of the farm house, and then bear left to walk round the lip of a quarry. • Begin to go downhill across open fields, bearing right at a path junction marked by a yellow arrow. Head towards a ruined barn. • Turn left and descend towards a dry dale running roughly left and right. Cross it and climb to the right towards the outskirts of Wensley village. • Follow the narrow street leading into the village and main road. Cross and, keeping to the right of the cottage opposite, follow a signposted path indicating the way to Stanton Moor and Birchover. Aim ahead towards woodland. • Cross two fields and then follow a forest track. • Climb over a stile and turn left, uphill along a surfaced lane. Fork left at the lane end, to bear left along a woodland track. The factory seen through trees on the right of the lane stands on the site of Mill Close Mine,

once the most productive lead mine in the Peak. Starting in the 1700s, it had a chequered career until the mid-nineteenth century when more efficient pumping equipment made it viable for the next hundred years or so. The factory began by extracting residual lead from the spoil heaps, but now specialises in extracting lead and other metals from worn-out batteries etc. The preserved surface remains of the Old Mill Close Mine are passed close by on the next section of the walk. • Take the left fork at the finger post and walk down into the valley bottom and bear right. The imposing tower of the Old Mill Close Mine winding house is to your right. A short diversion here is worthwhile, but do not follow the path in front of the winding house; return to the valley bottom path and turn right. • Follow the path upstream through woodland. Bear left with the path in order to cross the stream and go over a stile. • Using two old gate posts and stone stiles to indicate the way, go half-right then diagonally left uphill. • Cross the stile at the valley head and turn right along the road back into Winster.

Out & About

Derbyshire abounds in the hidden treasures away from the familiarity of the standard tourist routes. Half day tours from Ashbourne include a 40 mile journey along the county’s undiscovered by-ways, crossing the centuries from Roman times to the present day. Why was a 19 arch viaduct built over the Duffield to Wirksworth railway? What is the connection between the film star Rudolph Valentino and Hazelwood? When did mice delay a major explosion? More specialised themes concentrate the limestone quarries of Wirksworth and Middleton, lead mines great and small or the history behind rose gardens. In each case, the emphasis is on the people who were involved. www.offthederbyshirebeatentrack.co.uk

Lynn Smith is a local artist who many will recognise for her beautiful floral water colours. Recently Lynn has ventured into using acrylic and oils. She finds inspiration from nature and the changing seasons whilst walking in the Derbyshire countryside with her dog Alice. Illustrated is an acrylic piece entitled ‘Warm Sweet Summer’. Other examples of her work can be seen at Out Framed, Market Place, Ripley.

Duffield Art Gallery is privileged to have the last works of the late Frank Wright, including some previously unseen works. Frank died in October 2016, a lifelong resident of North Nottinghamshire, Frank spent his early working life as a mining engineer and surveyor. His drawing office training enabled him to produce the fine detail so often found in his work. After leaving the mining industry in the eighties, Frank continued to paint professionally full time, his paintings highlighting the beauty of the Derbyshire countryside, and his ability to capture light and reflections on water. Franks collection of works are framed in beautiful handmade gilt frames from Frintons of Frinton -On-Sea, Britain’s leading framers. Jill Underwood, who owns and runs the gallery says “I love paintings by mature artists, full of accumulated skill and a lifetime of experience, trends come and go, but work of this quality will always be relevant. As you enjoy good music, or good food and wine, you should enjoy good art”. Prices start from £395 to £595 depending on size. The gallery will be open for a late night on August 17th, you can complete your evening in the newly opened “Bradmans Wine Cellar” next to the gallery.

iva restaurant is well situated in the middle of Matlock on Dale Road; being close to a car park just around the corner. We visited this restaurant and discovered an idyllic place to eat in and experience that special Italian dining cuisine at a very cost effective price… On entering the restaurant we immediately felt delighted that we had chosen this venue. Viva is a stylish, modern and glamorous restaurant which offers a traditional Italian and contemporary cuisine. We were greeted by a waitress and taken to our table. Looking around, the open kitchen is impressive and pristine; together with the carefully chosen wallpapers and sculptures it all creates a totally enjoyable different dining experience. We were struck by the hustle and bustle of the restaurant, even on a raining mid week evening the restaurant was busy. And soon we were to find out why... Having examined the extensive menu of traditional dishes my partner eventually (with the expert recommendation from our waitress) chose the Cozze al Vapore at £6.95. This delicious dish consisted of steamed mussels in a cream, lemon and garlic sauce. I went for the Funghi Dolcelatte priced at just £4.95. Also delicious – the button mushrooms were stuffed with the famous Italian Dolcelatte cheese, coated in breadcrumbs and then baked in the oven and served with ciabatta bread. For our main dishes, my partner chose the Filletto Pepe Verde at £19.95. His fillet steak was cooked to perfection and the flambéd sauce of black peppercorns, brandy, French mustard and cream beautifully complimented it. He really was enthusiastic and remarked that it was one of the best steaks he has ever had! The dish was served with a garnish and French fries. Equally looking too good to eat was my choice of pasta. I chose the traditional Salsa di Pollo at £11.25. This popular pasta dish consisted of diced chicken breast, mushrooms, onions, fresh herbs and a hint of pomodoro and garlic in a creamy sauce. All this was washed down with a glass of house red and a Peroni beer. The appetising substantial portions had completely filled us up and so to finish the evening off we just had a couple of coffees.

In conclusion, all the dishes were dazzlingly presented and bursting with flavour and nothing was too much trouble. It’s so good to have an Italian restaurant on ones doorstep that is excellent value for money and very affordable. Children are welcomed at Viva and I noticed the kids menu; for £6.95 they can choose any pizza or pasta from the menu, just in a smaller size. A massive thank you to Saj and their team. We’ll be back very soon so watch this space.

Afternoon Tea Week

August 14th to 20th

T

he space between lunch and evening meal is far too long so why not slot something in between like an afternoon tea. The Victorians were good at this and Queen Victoria herself enjoyed this social occasion. Traditionally this meal contains tiny finger sandwiches, scones with jam and clotted cream, and sweet dainties like cakes and pastries to give you a bit of a gee up for the rest of the day.

This simple afternoon meal grew into a social event, especially for those who spent their lives in the upper echelons of the day’s society. Today that has spread to all aspects of society and we can all enjoy that relaxing china cup of fine tea. As the name suggests, tea was a central part of this meal, a tradition started by Anna, 7th Duchess of Bedford. A pot of fresh tea with a snack just takes away the stress of the day. Hence Afternoon Tea. To join in celebrating Afternoon Tea Week simply, for the length of a week, make a pause for Afternoon Tea a part of your day.

riving along a single-track road, which meanders through the craggy hill and grassy dales of North Derbyshire, I am forced to perform an emergency stop.

It’s not a good time. I am – thanks to a Sat Nav intent on herding me back to an A-road – twenty minutes late for an appointment with yogurt-maker Laura Howe. But what can I do? A hare has decided to hop slowly down the road in front of my car. Unlike me, he is clearly not late for an important date. When I finally reach my destination - Leisure Farm at Cressbrook - it’s well worth all the U-turns. Sitting at the kitchen table, with a restorative mug of tea in hand, my eyes keep straying to the window. Laura’s home is surrounded on all sides by never-ending fields on which husband Tom, and his family, keep their free-range dairy herd. The cows graze over 265 acres of land known as Litton Slack at the heart of Derbyshire’s White Peak. This

is rambler country; luscious green meadows dissected only by centuries old limestone walls and sheer, breath-taking ascents falling into verdant valleys. It’s easy to see why Laura wanted to create a business inspired by the location. Never mind yogurt-makers - artists and poets would be moved by this countryside setting. “We were on a family holiday in Pembrokeshire when I realised how many people were running a rural business from their farms and homes and I wanted to do something like that,” Laura recalls.

Self-confessed ‘foodie’ journalist Amanda Volley showcases all that is great about food and drink in Derbyshire.

A Taste of North Derbyshire Yogurt

“My favourite was a tea shop in Bosherston Lilypond, which was in the front garden of a ladies’ cottage. She just did simple things like cream teas and cakes. I came away thinking I’d love to put that ethos into a business of my own.” Back in North Derbyshire, Laura began to think of products which could be made using milk from the family herd. The cows are mainly made up from pedigree Dairy Shorthorns; renown for producing creamy, protein-rich milk ideal for making dairy products like cheese and butter. “My first idea was to make ice-cream but one free from any preservatives and additives,” says Laura who launched her eponymous ‘Laura’s Dairy’ in December 2014. “I did a few trial-runs and got as far as looking at machinery. But a relative of ours spoke to the manager at the Chatsworth Estate Farm Shop. He told her the real gap in the market was for a yogurt produced in Derbyshire. I did a bit of research and realised farms which make yogurt from their own milk are few and far between. The nearest one is in Leicestershire.”

CountryImagesMagazine.co.uk | 71

“He’s been behind me all the way. If I do have any doubts Tom is the one telling me to keep going. I think he’s just so proud that we’re making something from the farm’s milk.”

For Laura, the suggestion was like lighting a touchpaper. Somehow – in-between juggling a job in the public sector in Matlock and looking after her three boys William (12), George (10), and four-year-old Ted – Laura turned every bit of spare time over to developing a ‘really good’ yogurt unsullied by superfluous ingredients. “My job involves a lot research but, even with the help of my sister-in-law, it still took two years to get up and running as we had to jump through so many hoops,” Laura recalls. “We also tested a lot of yogurt. I wonder what the staff in Waitrose at Buxton thought when we were buying £20-worth at a time?” Laura says the help she got from Derbyshire Dales District Council was invaluable. “They were able to give everything from practical advice on yogurt making to advising us on what funding was available,” Laura says. “Also, we got a massive amount of input from other food producers including a lady called Christine Ashby who has worked in the dairy industry for years.” Christine, an award-winning cheese-maker, teaches dairy and cheese courses at colleges and food schools. “We met thanks to Reaseheath College in Cheshire,” Laura explained. “I’d planned to do their yogurt-making course but they thought it might be too basic and gave me the tutor’s number. Christine ended up coming to teach at my home for two days.” Laura’s aim was to make a stripped down, ‘grown-up’ yogurt; low on sugar but naturally creamy due to the protein-rich milk. “When Christine said I’d have to put skimmed milk powder to control the amount of liquid whey, I wasn’t keen on adding anything,” she says. “But she was right. The small batches were fine but once we started making yogurt in bigger quantities, a puddle appeared on the top. It tasted fine, but the texture was too runny.” Christine’s advice also proved to be invaluable when it came to perfecting the products. “I think it helped that she wasn’t a fan of yogurt,” Laura smiled. “The honesty of her feed-back was fantastic. The first batch of natural yogurt wasn’t quite right and so I spent a few months tweaking it. Getting the consistency right was the biggest challenge. When I found out Christine was running a cheese-making course in Bakewell I took her another sample. She really liked it.” With the natural yogurt perfected, Laura decided to branch out on different flavours and roped in friends, family and colleagues as ‘tasters’. “I was very popular in the office as I’d often come in with samples,” she recalls.

72 | CountryImagesMagazine.co.uk

“I’m pleased to say they loved all the yogurts. In fact, I still get lots of orders from work. My colleague Barbara uses yogurt instead of butter in a delicious orange cake.” Talking to Laura, it’s clear why the yogurts have been attracting such glowing praise from customers. Her social media page is liberally sprinkled with positive reviews; the most common adjectives used are ‘creamy’ and ‘delicious’. Small wonder two of Laura’s yogurts scooped prestigious prizes at the Bakewell Show last summer. Her salted caramel – inspired by her children’s love of caramel desserts - was pipped by her own lemon curd which won a highly contested 1st prize. “I love homemade lemon curd but wasn’t sure about making my own as I am no baker,” Laura explained. “I approached a local trader who makes wonderful jams and preserves from produce grown in her garden. Unfortunately, she couldn’t provide me with a regular enough supply of curd but she was so helpful. I ended up with her granny’s recipe. It hails from Devon and can be baked in the oven. She said it was fool-proof and she was right. It’s gorgeous.” It’s such a good yogurt, Laura has even had some hand-written fan-mail. In the letter a customer explains that she had to take time to praise the delicious (that word again) yogurt. ‘Especially the lemon curd – yum, yum’. “The feedback keeps me going,” Laura admits. “I get up at six every morning to cool the yogurt I put on before going to bed. I’m creeping on tip-toe so as not to wake the boys. Then I give the boys their breakfast and it’s off on the school run, which can take an hour as they’re at three different schools.” If Laura is not at the ‘day-job’, she rushes home to start on another batch of yogurt. “The reality is a bit different to the dream I had on holiday. I seem to spend most of my time doing lots of cleaning with my hair scraped back in a hair-net,” she laughs. “I’ll also squeeze in some paperwork and make deliveries. My eye is constantly on the clock as I have to be at the school for when Ted finishes at 3pm. After the boys are in bed, I put on some more yogurt. It can be a bit crazy sometimes.”

enquiries about supplying large farm shops and larger retailers, but I’d have to rent a bigger space and buy equipment. Even though there is European funding to help – at least at the moment - it’s not an easy decision to make, especially when the children are so young.” For now, Laura is concentrating on supplying artisan shops and delicatessens around her home. Her yogurts have also proved a big hit at many of the local farmer’s markets including ones held at Sharrow Vale in Sheffield and Dronfield Local Producers Market in North-East Derbyshire. She also has a regular pitch at the hugely popular Bakewell Farmer’s Market, which takes place on the last Saturday of the month. “The other stallholders are so supportive,” she says. “I’m also attracting a lot of regular customers. One lady comes all the way from Lincolnshire – she’s such a big fan of the yogurt. One of the most unusual outlets is Cox Brothers in Longstone. They’re the people who pasteurise our milk and, they liked the product so much, they asked if they could sell it. They don’t have a shop, just a fridge and an honesty box.” Laura was also invited to attend a recent food festival in nearby Tideswell. “Unfortunately, I twisted my ankle while making the yogurt. Thankfully, my husband Tom agreed to go instead,” she explained. “He’s been behind me all the way. If I do have any doubts Tom is the one telling me to keep going. I think he’s just so proud that we’re making something from the farm’s milk. The popularity of the yogurt is a reward for all the hard work he and his family have put into the herd.” He even helped Laura secure a new customer: “Tom went to help a man whose car had become stuck over-night in a snow drift,” Laura recalls. “Tom spotted him the next-morning and - as he

helped to tow the car out of the snow – found out he was one of the owners of Hassop Hall Hotel, near Bakewell. Tom told him about my business and within a few days I was at the hotel reception handing over a cool bag full of yogurt samples. It’s a luxury hotel with exacting standards and so we were thrilled to get the order.” At this point, it seems only polite to meet the ‘ladies’ who make all this possible. As they are grazing on land a few fields away, Tom graciously offers us a lift on his off-road utility vehicle. The Dairy Shorthorns are fine looking beasts; even the colour - many of them are red and white - underline how special they are as a breed. “They won’t hurt you – they’re more curious than anything,” Tom reassures as a few – very large cows decide to cluster round for a close up with my camera. “We have 300 head of cattle altogether. They get a lot of attention as the breed is really back in fashion – one scooped a prize for best cow at the Christmas market in Leek last year. They’re outside grazing on grass for much of the year and you can taste that in the milk.” Back at Laura’s home, she presents me with a full set of her current yogurt flavours to try. I halfheartedly protest that she’ll be depriving herself of a lunch-time treat. “It’s fine, I don’t eat as much yogurt as I once did,” she laughs. “I’ve had to eat so much of it over the last few years. That’s one of the reasons I’d love to make a cheesecake using our yogurt. I could never get bored of cheesecake.” Laura’s Dairy yogurt is available at farmer’s markets including Bakewell Farmer’s Market, which takes place on the last Saturday of every month and Dronfield Local Producers’ Market, which takes place four times a year at Dronfield Hall Barn.

A business inspired by the location

Throughout the interview, Laura has to break off to check on the progress of the yogurt she is making for her next farmer’s market. It’s clearly a round-the-clock, seven-days a week operation. The gentle hum of the yogurt-maker has become the sound-track to family life. “I make the yogurt in what was our former utility room,” she says. “It’s quite a small space and I’m nearly at full capacity in terms of orders. I’ve had a lot of CountryImagesMagazine.co.uk | 73

Life’s a marathon. Look good running it.

FIT

Active beauty for an active lifestyle. Every day is jam-packed and full of surprises, look good no matter what you’re doing—whether that’s hiking or heading to Sunday brunch straight from yoga. Introducing CliniqueFit, a carefully curated line of athletic-inspired, high performance skin care and makeup that’s long-wearing and designed to fit seamlessly into your on-the-go lifestyle. Get that post-workout glow (without the workout), mascara that won’t run when you’re on a run…or running around town, and skin care that helps you keep your cool, even as your day heats up. These game-changing products feel as comfortable as they look, stay in place while you move and go wherever the day takes you. CliniqueFit helps you look as good as you feel—high-performance formulas for your highly active life.

CLINIQUEFIT POST-WORKOUT MATTIFYING MOISTURIZER £26 A double action moisturizer that hydrates skin for up to 8 hours while keeping surface oil in check. This lightweight, oilfree gel formula provides a matte, shinefree finish leaving skin soft, comfortable and nourished. Talk about instant mattification. CliniqueFit is perfect for before, during and after your workout. Go ahead, put it to the sweat-test.

CLINIQUEFIT WORKOUT 24-HOUR MASCARA £20 Separates, lengthens and curls lashes without flaking or clumping for a full 24 hours. The unique maneuverable brush has four faceted sides and a pointed tip to define each and every lash and deliver full, voluminous body from root to tip. Sweat and humidity resistant. Cold water proof, yet easily removed with warm water.

CLINIQUEFIT WORKOUT MAKEUP SPF 40 £29.50 A refreshing, lightweight foundation that wears for a full 12 hours and provides broad spectrum protection with a blend of chemical and physical sunscreens. Moderate coverage immediately evens skin tone and conceals the appearance of pores, without causing breakouts. Simply shake and blend for a shine-free, natural matte finish that is both sweat and humidity resistant. Ideal for oilier skin types. Available in four shades.

For more information and to buy online visit www.clinique.co.uk TRIED & TESTED ● TRIED & TESTED ● TRIED & TESTED ● TRIED & TESTED ● TRIED & TESTED ● TRIED & TESTED ● TRIED & TESTED POST-WORKOUT MATTIFYING MOISTURISER I’m not sure how this works but having just joined the gymn, I can honestly say it works well. I’ve also used it every day during this hot summer because it hydrates with none of the oiliness, it’s excellent. JP

WORKOUT FOUNDATION This is not only great for workouts but perfect for hot days, it has a matt finish and lasts all day. It has a runny consistency so a little goes a long way. It gave a medium coverage but can be built up. With a SPF of 40 too its a great all round foundation. CB

WORKOUT 24-HOUR MASCARA This survived an hour long gym session followed by a high intensity spin class. Looked like I’d just put it on! Fab product that really does last. VP
