Season of Mists and Mellow Fruitfulness
As
autumn slowly creeps upon us, our focus moves from holidays to making our homes ideal for the winter months that lie ahead.
Kitchens and fires are Vicky’s main themes for September. A functional fully kitted out kitchen has, over the years, become an essential part of modern living whether it be a place for creative cooking or one in which we create an open space for families to be together. Most homes have a fire as a central focus so we want something that not only looks good but gives warmth and comfort. This month Draycott is ablaze with floral hanging baskets and we have a lovely selection of independent businesses for you to visit. Steve interviews two of the nations most popular singers Aled Jones and Russell Watson. Brian is puffing away up in Scotland discovering the delights of the Lochs. Max explores a house that once stood proud in Chesterfield. How sad to see such majestic places now lost forever. NEW AREA Our policy of increasing our circulation into quality homes has led to The Derby edition of Country Images encompassing Draycott into its distribution area giving our advertisers greater exposure for their products.

Clyde Steam Puffers
Brian Spencer takes a trip on the last sea-going puffer, boats that once provided the lifeline for remote communities around Scotland’s west coast.

oal smoke spiralling its lazy way above the shining inverted keel of Glasgow’s Science Museum guided us to the puffer VIC32, our home for a week’s cruise around the Firth of Clyde. Puffers were once the lifeline for communities throughout Scotland’s west coast, and beyond, carrying everything from coal to livestock. Their curious design was based on canal ‘gabberts’, horse-drawn barges carrying coal between Glasgow and Edinburgh. Short and stubby they had to be less than sixty feet long in order to fit into locks along the way. Around 1870 someone had the bright idea of installing steam engines and doing away with horses, opening the way to working beyond the canal, trade which in any case was declining with the advent of railways. As puffers were flat-bottomed, they could find their way into places lacking conventional harbours. They simply ran into sandy bays, waited for the tide to go out, sat down and unloaded their cargos into whatever wheeled vehicles were available.
The Firth of Clyde
Loading coal for the boiler
The result of this change to mechanical power was a curious hybrid of canal barge-cum-sea-going vessel. A blunt bow held the crew’s quarters below a steam-driven winch to operate the simple crane used for unloading cargo out of the cavernous hold. All the important works, from skipper’s cabin to coal-fired boiler were crammed into the tiny space offered by the stern. Steering the boat was hampered by the helmsman having to peer round a funnel directly in front of the wheel-house. This curious arrangement was linked to the reason why the boats were called puffers. As the first engine-powered vessels had unlimited canal water for their boilers, there was no need to economise. Exhaust steam was simply blown directly up the funnel, making a puffing sound which gave the boats their name. Condensers fitted to sea-going puffers in order to avoid using sea-water, removed the need to exhaust waste steam up the funnel, but the name stuck.
The funnel is directly in front of the wheel-house www.countryimagesmagazine.co.uk | 9
Anyone who remembers the BBC TV comedy/drama The Vital Spark, will recall the mis-adventures of the motley crew of an aging puffer plying its way around the Western Isles. There was also a full-length Ealing Comedy The Maggie, in which an American tycoon Calvin B Marshall, played by the late Paul Douglas is tricked by the Maggie’s devious skipper into hiring the puffer to deliver expensive furniture to a remote Hebridean island. Suffice to say the furniture never reaches its destination, but along the way the tycoon learns a lot about life from the ‘wee boy’, the Maggie’s cabin boy as well as local people frequently played by local inhabitants of the west coast. Both the BBC series and the Ealing Comedy were based on stories written in the early 1900s by the late Hugh Munro, a Glasgow Evening News journalist. He immortalised the likes of Para Handy or Hurricane Jack and the scallywag crews of the puffer trade around Scotland’s west coast. Never out of print for long his stories brought to life the exploits of characters such as those imprisoned for poaching game, or in one reported case, stealing their boat’s petty cash. It wasn’t just the crews that were characters, puffers also had a life of their own – there was once a puffer tied to Arran’s Lamlash harbour wall for months, waiting for a replacement to its propeller which had lost a blade.
Cruising with the Vic 32
While there are several puffers awaiting restoration in harbours up and down the country, the VIC32 is the only one currently sea-worthy and able to carry passengers. 10 | www.countryimagesmagazine.co.uk
Although built to the design of a traditional Clyde puffer, VIC32 started life working for the Royal Navy during WW2. The initials VIC are a naval acronym for Victualling Inshore Craft, one of 100 made during the war to carry supplies ranging from food to high explosives. Built by R Dunston’s of Thorne on Humberside, VIC32 spent the war victualling warships and naval bases around the North Sea. Although these little ships had a mundane existence, they served their country well in time of war. Regrettably only a handful survived into more peaceful times – some ended their days as tramp steamers in the Far East; a few still languish in naval museums or were scrapped, but only the VIC32 carries out its original work, albeit for pleasure not commerce. Enthusiasts Nick and Rachael Walker found VIC32 languishing in a Whitby dock. In 1975 they were on their way home from Northumbria after an abortive attempt to buy a small yacht. Quite by chance they spotted the puffer when they were about to leave Whitby. Even though it looked rather grubby, nevertheless it was in reasonable condition, basically needing only a bit of TLC. Enquiries led the Walkers to the VIC’s owner, Keith Schellenberg one-time owner of the Island of Eigg who proved willing to sell. The boat was sufficiently sea worthy to sail down to St Katherine’s Yacht Haven in London where with the help of volunteers, it spent the next three years undergoing considerably more than simple TLC. The result was an almost unique example of a coal fired steam boat ready to find its way back to the traditional home of the puffers around Scotland’s west coast. In 1978 crewed mainly by teams of volunteers, VIC32 made its way home. Since then it has carried well over 5,000 passengers
The Firth of Clyde and Loch Long offer spectacular scenery; whether on deck or from the wheel of the VIC 32.
including narrow boat enthusiasts Timothy West and Prunella Scales featured in their canal series on TV. Passenger accommodation might be a bit cramped on two levels in the converted hold, but it is adequate and cosy, complete with its steam operated 78 rpm gramophone, or the series of steam whistles on the funnel called a calliope. Everyone pitches in, from helping wash dishes, to steering the puffer, or shovelling coal to feed the insatiable engine. We joined the VIC32 at its berth behind Glasgow Science Centre. To one side was the Paddle Steamer Waverley making ready for trips ‘doon the watter’. To our front and under restoration was the Queen Mary – not the trans-Atlantic liner, but the original boat to carry that illustrious name, (for years it had to be known as Queen Mary 2 after HRH King George V asked that the newly built liner was named after his wife). Sailing down the Clyde made us realise how narrow the river is and the difficulties launching new builds. Most of the yards are no more – John Brown’s where RMS Queen Elizabeth 2 was built is now the site of a college of technology. Our first night afloat was at anchor opposite Faslane Nuclear Submarine base at the head of Loch Long. We seemed to attract the attention of the police, but hopefully it was simply the novelty of a puffer in this area of almost science fiction. Sailing south down the Firth of Clyde we went past Dunoon to call at Rothesay on Bute. Here we cosied up for the night to one of CalMac’s ferries preparing itself for the holiday season.
For generations of Glaswegians, Rothesay was popular port of call for Clyde trippers, many of whom take full advantage of the magnificent public toilets that have stood on the quay since Victorian times. Fairly recently the harbour authority wanted to demolish it, but HRH Prince Charles in his capacity as Duke of Rothesay, designated the structure as the only Grade 2 listed Victorian toilets in Britain! With the advantage of an offshoot of the Gulf Stream, Bute has two magnificent gardens. Both are a short drive south from Rothesay and we were able to visit them quite easily. Mount Stuart is part of the Victorian stately home of the Marquess of Bute whose family fortunes were based on south Wales’s collieries. The small hillside garden set within woodland is a pleasant contrast to the castle’s heavy interior. A mile or so closer to Rothesay, Ascog Hall is home of the oldest fern in Britain, a 1000 year old King Fern, remarkably the sole survivor of the Victorian collection. A short hop took us to Great Cumbrae and a visit to its Episcopalian Cathedral, then onwards to Tarbert at the mouth of Loch Fyne to pick up 10 tons of coal whilst watched over by a picnicking family of four sheltering under a convenient lorry’s tailboard. Despite the pouring rain, Nick had been advised that the Crinan canal was about to be closed and so a hurried dash up to Ardrishaig and working VIC32 through fourteen locks ended a memorable holiday more suddenly than expected. www.countryimagesmagazine.co.uk | 11

West House Chesterfield

A
about seven years ago I found myself sat next to Sir Nicholas Soames at lunch, which put me on my conversational mettle. What does one say to a grandson of Sir Winston Churchill and the son of a Tory Grandee (the last governor of Southern Rhodesia inter alia) and a man who himself is a bit of a grandee? After a little small talk I suddenly recalled that his grandfather was Arthur Soames, son of the proprietor of the Brampton Brewery, Chesterfield and nephew to Lady Baden Powell. That being so I asked him what he knew of the family brewery, and the family homes, Stubbing Court and the vanished West House Chesterfield. In the event, this got him going splendidly, and I learnt quite a bit about what he had learned from family reminiscences in his childhood.
The
Lost Houses of Derbyshire by Maxwell Craven

To be fair, I did know a bit about the latter, simply because it was on the reserve list of houses to be included in The Derbyshire Country House, but which failed to make the cut when Mick Stanley and I were planning the second volume in 1982. West House, Chesterfield was a classic piece of rus in urbe: a country villa situated almost in the centre of town, in this case, Chesterfield. It stood on West Bars, the street leading from the SW angle of the Market place towards Brampton, on its north side hardly more than two or three hundred yards from the bustle of the Market Square itself.

West House in its days as an hotel, showing Harry Soames’s new gates, from a post card. [Private collection]
The land appears originally to have had a confusing succession of owners, but in 1765 George Holland, who had owned the site for eight years (but whose ancestor William Holland had sold it as far back as 1616) sold it to opulent lead mining entrepreneur Nicholas Twigg for £110. He enlarged the plot in 1769 and proceeded to build a new house. The reason may have been his desire to live adjacent to his partner in his mining enterprises, Henry Thornhill, who had acquired neighbouring Rose Hill, upon which I shall have more to say in a later article. Unfortunately, if that was his intent, Thornhill shortly afterwards moved his base to Derby, and Twigge re-sold the land along with his ‘newly erected messuage’ to Anthony Lax in 1770. Lax was the scion of a minor Yorkshire

landowner whose mother, Sarah Jefferson, was the great grand-daughter and ultimate heiress of the somewhat grander Maynards of Kirk Levington Hall in that county. The wedding was on the 22nd May 1766 and the settlement would appear to have included the large area called West Fields either side of West Bars so the acquisition of a brand new house adjacent would have made much sense. West House was quite a grand brick house of two and a half storeys, the five-bay entrance front facing West Bars, from which it was artfully shielded by trees. The architect was almost certainly Edmund Stanley, a Nottinghamshire born builder-architect who settled in the town in 1763. Of two and a half storeys, the entrance front had a threebay centre, which broke slightly forward under a generous pediment centred with an oval patera, although the Doric pilastered door-case below was stone and here the pediment, supported by pilasters and frieze, was modillioned. There was a sill band at first floor level right round. The west front was centred by a wide full height canted bay with a hipped roof, possibly added a generation later, whilst the other show front, that to the east, also of five bays under three gables, looked across lawns to a wall which hid the backs of the buildings of the town. The service accommodation was to the north with a lower stable block running westwards
from it enclosing the pleasure grounds and concentrating the semi-rural view westwards. The interior was apparently well fitted up with good joinery including a very fine staircase leading off the hall; as was de rigeur for the whole of the first half of the 18th century, then the dining room was panelled. The grounds were landscaped as a small park. Anthony Lax’s mother Sarah, apparently a redoubtable old girl and keen to be seen as a cut above Chesterfield’s municipal elite, assumed the surname of Maynard in September 1784 and the following March received a grant of arms, so the owners of West House henceforth became Maynards. Anthony died in 1825 without issue, leaving the house and Derbyshire estate to his brother John’s fourth son, Edward Gilling Maynard, then thirty-two and married into the Wallers, local attorneys. His eldest brother received the landed estates in Yorkshire and the family latterly were of Skellingthorpe Hall, Yorkshire. Meanwhile, Edward was appointed to the bench, and to a deputy lieutenancy and kept a pack of harriers at West House. He made few if any changes to the building, however, bar enlarging the stables He died in 1881, to be succeeded by his son Edward Anthony Jefferson Maynard, who found the increasing pollution and expansion of the town too much, and so moved away to Duffield Hall and later Egginton Hall, both of which he rented, eventually building himself a superb Arts-and-Crafts seat called Hoon Ridge just west of Hilton. He had trouble finding a tenant for West House, especially as he had sold much of the land for building, thus cutting his own throat economically. Some of the ground, south of West Bars, called Maynard’s Meadows, went to the upstart Lancashire, Derbyshire and East Coast Railway which built a very impressive station looking more like a country house than a railway terminus, diagonally opposite West House. Nevertheless, in 1889 he found a tenant. This was Harold Soames, the second son of Arthur, of Irnham Park, Lincolnshire, a descendant of an ancient family enriched as London traders in the reign of James I. Harry Soames was the proprietor of the Brampton Brewery and had previously been tenant of the Gladwins of Stubbing Court, where his children were born. He moved the drive, added imposing new gates whilst blocking an old pedimented pedestrian entrance. These children, two daughters and a son, were brought up at West House and apparently enjoyed a very happy childhood there. The son, Arthur, eventually bought
Sheffield Park, Sussex from the 3rd and last Earl of Sheffield, and his son was the Tory Politician Christopher, later Lord Soames who ended his career enjoying the dubious accolade of having brought Zimbabwe into existence. He, of course, married Mary, Winston Churchill’s daughter, and hence their son, my companion at that lunch. One daughter, Auriol Edith married Robert Davidson of Colombo, capital of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), and the other, Olave St. Clair, born 1889, married in 1912, Robert Baden Powell, hero of Mafeking and founder of the scout movement, later created 1st Lord Baden-Powell. She, for her role in her husband’s endeavours was, like her cousin once removed, Lady Soames, made GBE and became first Chief Guide. She died in 1977.

With more than 12 years experience & expertise in the installation of artificial grass there’s not many that know more than we do about the subject. Today’s artificial grass is manufactured from materials that are both UV stabilised & Hypoallergenic respectively protecting the colour of the grass from fading due to the sun’s ultra violet rays & not having any plant material component, free from all pollens, thereby safe for those who suffer from plant & pollen allergies. There maybe cheaper services around, but none come with our level of professionalism & our piece of mind 10 year guarantee on all artificial grass products.

The Soameses left West house in 1895; the prospect of the opening of the LD & ECR Market Place station proved an intrusion too far, and Harry went to live in the engagingly named Liliput, Dorset. Neighbour, Fred Butcher of Rose Hill bought it for a shade over £3,000, who let it to Col. Kinsman from whom the tenancy rapidly descended to his nephew, Lt. Col. A T H Barnes, of Lord Gorell’s family and another descendant of the 1616 seller of the site. His son occupied
it, but moved in 1906 and a year later it became the relatively short-lived Park Hotel and Restaurant which closed in 1912. The following year it re-opened as the local Conservative & Unionist Club which moved again in 1915. Eyre & Co. were the next tenants, but in 1921 it was sold to the government as a tax office. When this closed in 1935 the freehold was sold to the Borough of Chesterfield which cleared it soon afterwards to make way for Chesterfield’s spanking new Town Hall.
Ironically, the station, latterly LNER and serving a line which never prospered, closed to passengers on 3rd December 1951 and to freight traffic on 4th March 1957. The building was subsequently demolished to allow a new road to be put through. No trace of either station or house now remains and architecturally, Chesterfield is poorer for the loss of both.

Modern Collectibles by Maxwell Craven
Swatch Originals A 1985 Original Swatch in typical kaleidoscopic colours, 1985, ÂŁ75.
In the early 1980s, when just appointed Keeper of Antiquities at Derby Museum, one of my duties was to scan the more prestigious auction catalogues. The reason was because I had determined to increase our collections relating to the then total unsung Derby clockmaker and Enlightenment scientific pioneer John Whitehurst FSA. Yet by the middle of the decade, I was astonished to find much space in these catalogues devoted to gaudily coloured rubberised plastic watches, bearing the imprimatur of Swatch and attractive, remarkably high, estimates.
It
turned out on investigation that Swatch was (and is) a Swiss maker founded as recently as 1983 by Nicolas Hayek. The product was developed as a response to the 1970s and 1980s flood of inexpensive Asian-made digital watches.
Black Jelly Fish variant, sold for ÂŁ700
The name Swatch is a contraction of second watch, as these watches were intended to be casual, disposable accessories. Development began in the early 1980s, under the leadership of Ernst Thomke with a small team of watch engineers. Conceived as a standard timekeeper in plastic, Franz Sprecher, a marketing consultant hired by Thomke to give the project an outsider's consideration, sought to create a fashionable line of watches. The Swatch was originally intended to re-capture entry level market share lost by Swiss manufacturers and to re-popularize traditional watches at a time when digital watches had achieved wide popularity. www.countryimagesmagazine.co.uk | 35
Modern Laser Track Chronograph, £86
Vivienne Westwood Cigar Box Putti with box sold for £130.
Relatively modern Unisex System auto-wing Swatch £110
The first collection of twelve Swatch models, introduced in 1983 ranged in price from 39.90 to 49.90 Swiss Francs but was standardized at 50.00. Sales targets were set to one million timepieces for 1983 and 2.5 million the year after. With an aggressive marketing campaign and relatively low price for a Swiss-made watch, it gained instant popularity in its home market. Compared to conventional watches, a Swatch was 80% cheaper to produce by fully automating assembly and reducing the number of parts from the usual 91 or more to 51 components, with no loss of accuracy. This combination of marketing and manufacturing expertise restored Switzerland as a major player in the world wristwatch market. Synthetic materials were used for the watchcases as well as a new ultra-sonic welding process and assembly technology.
Standard current ladies’ Swatch, £40 new
36 | www.countryimagesmagazine.co.uk
As I had noticed, the popularity of the Swatch peaked by the mid-1980s. Among the trends associated with Swatches are wearing more than one model, using them as ponytail holders and attaching them to clothing. This era of prosperity also marked the introduction of designs created by artists like Keith Haring, a move that added an air of style swank to Swatch's trendy reputation. Like other companies, Swatch's continuing success relies on the steady introduction of new and innovative products, which makes any Swatch manufactured before the mid-
1990s somewhat rare. Limited edition or themed Swatches are even harder to find and fetch significant prices at auction. The Swatch Originals are the most widely collected and are plastic-cased. Standard ones can be got for £10-15 but new ones only range between £40 and under £100. But it is the vintage ones that people collect, because they were conceived as virtually disposable, with the result that the reservoir of available ones has shrunk significantly. Other than Originals, limited edition models are the most rare and valuable ones. To form an idea of what constitutes a rarity Swatch, I might draw readers’ attention to the Jelly Fish Chronometer, for instance. Swatch produced only 2,000 numbered Jelly Fishes in 1990, making this one of the rarest early Swatches. It features a completely translucent strap and case through which wearers can watch the precision components in operation. The drawback is that the strap can get yellowed with use, reducing the value to £60-80. Black Nubeo ones can reach £3,000, however. Another is the bizarrely named Cigar Box Putti Pop Swatch. This was designed in 1992 by Vivienne Westwood for the Autumn/Winter collection and features baby angels on the dial and strap. The production of only 9,999 numbered watches, released bizarrely in whimsical cigar boxes assured its rarity. Still with its box one will cost you £80-100. Another
is the Trésor Magique of 1993. Although not a Swatch Original (and lacking the plastic case) its solid case and platinum crown make it very collectible and the limited edition release of only 12,999 numbered watches endows it the rarity collectors like. Recently one sold at Bamfords for over £1000.
Eccentric platinum Trésor Magique Swatch, estimated at £1,500
As the foregoing makes clear, Swatch watches are available in various sizes, shapes, and designs and indeed, there are various subsidiary types as well, like the Swatch Irony which is metal cased, some self-winding with a chronograph version introduced about six years ago. Another version is the Skin, an ultra-thin version (an eighth of an inch) of the original Swatch – hence the name. There is also the Bijoux version, incorporating blingy embellishments like Swarovski crystals.
More recently, the firm has introduced digital dials and various hi-tech additions that rather cut across the original intention of the brand. That said, the firm introduced in 2013 System51 claimed to be the world's first mechanical movement with entirely automated assembly, using the 51 components of the movement anchored to a central screw with automatic winding and a 90-hour power reserve. The movement is permanently sealed in its case with structural adhesive securing both the acrylic crystal over the dial and the case back, making it invulnerable to environmental conditions including moisture, dust or foreign objects – and also making it maintenance free (and, of course, impossible to service). To the collector, it is the original, or at least earlier, models that are sought after.
Jelly fish watch, sold recently for £375 without box. Standard early Swatch bought for £11.50

Draycott a pleasant surprise for those inclined to stop and look around.
It
always lifts our spirits when we visit Draycott,
because they always seem to have the flags out there. Indeed, practically every house appears to sport a flagstaff holder. When my wife and I went last, in July the place was ablaze with floral hanging baskets and wonderfully colourful displays of canal art, especially on The Green, inspired by the nearby canal, currently subject of a terrific but inevitably slow effort of restoration by the Derby & Sandiacre Canal Trust.
The other impression is that for so small a place, it has a remarkable number of good buildings, albeit that the local authority has allowed most of the older properties, including a number of good late Georgian farmhouses, to install uPVC windows, which never do a period building any favours. This is all the more astonishing as most of the village lies within a conservation area. The inhabitants, apparently known locally as Neddies, are a remarkably friendly, traditional, lot. There is much of interest in Draycott. For a start it sits astride the Roman road from Little Chester to Sawley Ferry, from whence it continued SE through Leicestershire to join the Leicester-Lincoln road at Willoughby-on-the-Wolds. It jinks off the road to Long Eaton by the Coach and Horses to maintain its alignment, absolutely straight all the way from the southern edge of Spondon until it reaches the river. Draycott is a remarkably common place name, being Old English and unsurprisingly carrying the meaning of ‘cottages on a neck of land’, not the more prosaic ‘cottage where a dray is kept’ as previously interpreted. 40 | www.countryimagesmagazine.co.uk
It appears in Domesday Book, so was probably founded on the Roman Road sometime after the English settlements, being just above the highest known flood level of the river, which lies less than a mile to the south. When the mini ice age came, along with the Black Death in the 1340s, the river levels rose, as evinced by places where the parish church was founded amidst the village, but later – post c. 1340s – river level rises forced the village to move to higher ground, leaving the church isolated as, for instance, at South Wingfield. The situation may have been the same at Draycott, for its church has always been ancient St Chad, Church Wilne, a Saxon foundation in the greatly shrunken village, much closer to the river and lower too, much prone to flooding. Although Church Wilne fails to appear in Domesday (it was probably untaxed by the king) it and the original settlement of Draycott may have been entirely co-terminous, the village moving up the slope of the flood plain in the 14th century, leaving the church, a chapel-of-ease to that at Sawley, alone among the water meadows.. I counted four lively pubs (and a good micro-pub) in Draycott, which is another reason to have one’s spirit lifted (unless one is on the wagon, of course), and several old cottages, including a 16th century barn, and the remains of the manor house on South Street (no.4). This is L-shaped, a typical small late 16th century or older manor with a straight coped gable at the south end, rebuilt probably in the 19th century to incorporate the corner porch, with a two bay range with mullioned windows. Underneath the harling it is mainly brick possibly incorporating some early timber framing. Little is known of it, as the manor was long held by the Bishops of Lichfield. The Stanhopes, who acquired the estate at the Reformation, probably used it as the
Some of the many Draycott buildings described by Maxwell including: a handsome Arts-and-Crafts range of shops, the council’s astonishingly exuberant brick single storey primary school and the impressive Victoria Mill on the east side of the village.
factor’s or bailiff ’s house and latterly their tenants were the ubiquitous Placketts. The village thus lay entirely within the Elvaston estate of the Earls of Harrington. It was the 8th Earl who built a handsome Arts-and-Crafts range of shops with flats above in 1897 on the west side of the very modest Market Place, the architect being Alexander MacPherson of Derby; its affinity with the Liversage Trust estate where it faces Nottingham Road, Derby is unmistakable. It is only spoilt by gaudy shop facias. My favourite building in the village itself is the council’s astonishingly exuberant brick single storey primary school on Hopwell Road. Completed in 1905, it is of thirteen bays no less, the centerpiece and end bays being prominent Dutch gables surmounting Venetian windows, vying with four tall round headed lights under dormered classical pediments, interspersed with plain sashes, to produce an impressive ensemble. One end is still labelled ‘Infants’ the other ‘Mixed’. It has strong similarities with Wilmorton School, Derby, by Coulthurst and Booty and may also be their work. The wrought iron railing in front is especially fine, with occasional wiggly balusters, art nouveau lyres and urn finials, probably the work of Edwin Haslam of Derby. Another local grandee, albeit one whose meteoric rise and fall caused much remark a century ago, was Ernest Terah Hooley (1859-1947), who inherited a thriving lace manufacturing business. He became an international financier and friend of Edward VII, only to meet financial nemesis just prior to being offered a baronetcy by his Royal confrère,
which was accordingly withdrawn. Living at Risley Hall, he gave Draycott the impressive Victoria Mill on Station Road on the east side of the village, 1888-1907. It has a swaggering ogee domed clock tower which dominates the entire settlement, and its sides are an impressive 57 bays wide, despite the narrow frontage presented to the road. It is now converted as flats, as is the handsome pedimented two storey range of the Towle family’s Draycott Mills (also lace, originally cotton) on Market Street, added 1842 to an earlier mill of 1814 behind and another beyond of 1800, propped by baulks of timber with further outlier with truncated factory chimney. On Hopwell Road is an odd truncated-looking round tower of three stages seemingly made of concrete blocks, which we presumed must have had a WW2 origin; unlike a windmill, the sides do not taper. Across the fields to the West stands Draycott House, a neat brick villa of three storeys designed by Derby’s celebrated Joseph Pickford and built in 1781 for Derby copper mill proprietor, William Evans, from whom it descended to his son-in-law (and kinsman) the banker Thomas Evans of Darley Abbey. It later was sold to the Scotts, one of whom is said over the decades to have shored up the banks of the lake in the small park with a very considerable number of empty whisky bottles in order to conceal his toping from his family! It was sold in the 1930s to the Radfords from whom it descended to the Hirons family, there until recently. Often overlooked by those travelling towards Nottingham, Draycott is a pleasant surprise for those inclined to stop and look around. Maxwell Craven www.countryimagesmagazine.co.uk | 41

Gardening in September with Mark
F
irstly I would like to say ‘thank you’ to everyone who has been in touch about last month’s article and the Derby Royal Hospital – Intensive Care Unit Court Yard Garden that I designed and planted. I loved all your comments and they are much appreciated.
September already and what a busy month it is. I’ve already had emails from readers who have come back from holiday fearing that their plants are dead or water logged. Also the ‘perennial’ question ‘When is the best time to start autumn and winter bedding?’ Well, most garden centres have seasonal bedding already in stock. So it is just a case of when you feel your plants have seen the best of the flowers or if the plants look tired. Before I forget, you need to start planting spring flowering bulbs this month. Many plant nurseries and garden centres will be stocking their new season spring flowering bulbs, such as hyacinths, narcissus (daffodils), crocus and tulips. There are a number of ways bulbs are sold: 1. Loose – Often the cheapest way to buy (no extra packaging) and you can closely inspect the bulbs before you buy. Usually a bigger ‘grade’ (size) of bulb for your money. 2. In Packs – Very quick way of buying bulbs, also with the nice
Smith
picture on the front of the packet so that you don’t forget what you have purchased. If it’s your first time buying bulbs, then this is the best way as there will be good planting instructions. 3. On-line – No inspection before you buy, usually a smaller ‘grade’ (size) of bulb, can be cheap but with added delivery charge.
Allotment or Vegetable Patch: • Pick apples, pears, plums and gages as they ripen, wrapping apples in paper for storage. • Plant spring cabbage plants now. • Save seeds from good varieties of beans for sowing next year. • Buy strawberry plants now, late summer or early autumn is always the best time to plant. • Prune out fruited blackberry stems and tie in new ones. • Lift and store onions • Cut down the ferny shoots of asparagus to soil level.
In the Greenhouse: • Line greenhouses with bubble wrap for insulation if temperatures start to fall at night. • Clear out exhausted crops and wash down with a garden disinfectant glazing, staging and framework.

• Plant dwarf bulbs in pots including iris, crocus, chionodoxa and scilla which should be on sale now in garden centres and nurseries. • Towards the end of this month wash off greenhouse shading paint.
General Garden Maintenance: • Fill compost heap with old flower heads and stems from around the garden. Making sure to compost diseased leaves. • Improve drainage on compacted lawns by spiking the ground with a fork or aerator and apply lawn sand plus sulphate of Iron to green up the lawn and kill moss. • Collect, wash with a garden disinfectant and store away canes, plant supports and pots. • Trim hedges to keep them neat and to control their size, this may possibly be the last cut of the year. • Lookout for leatherjackets, found now on lawns, and treat with a suitable insecticide or biological control. • Collect any fallen leaves from around roses to reduce the risk of diseases carrying over to next season. • Prune rambling/climbing roses back after flowering. • Grow bulbs in ‘aquatic’ baskets ready to drop into gaps in the border in spring. • Prepare ground ready for planting spring bulbs, by adding sand or a good bulb planting compost. • Plant new evergreen hedges such as laurel, conifer, pyracantha and escallonia. • Clear away faded bedding plants from borders and containers - then compost plants.
Re-Planting after the holidays or if you need a bit of late summer colour ? Here are 3 plants that look good during September. Abelia `Kaleidoscope` In my top 3 of favourite shrubs. Compact evergreen shrub with lemon yellow, variegated leaves that turn a beautiful orange red in autumn and winter and give outstanding colour throughout winter. During the year at various times this shrub has white trumpet flowers that bees love. Ideal for a border or container. Lonicera “Copper Beauty” Impressive variety of evergreen Honeysuckle with a profusion of bright yellow, scented flowers. The stand out feature is the burgundy new growth that appears throughout the growing season. Best grown against a sunny wall but can grow in semi-shade
Photinia `Little Red Robin` Dense evergreen shrub, with vivid bright red new growth throughout the year, as it grows. Pruning regularly helps promote new growth and makes it even denser. Good shrub for the border but is a great alternative to box balls in pots.

“You can walk into a room, meet somebody for the first time and immediately you know whether you can have a laugh with them and whether you’re going to get on with them”
Steve Orme interviews
Aled Jones and Russell Watson www.countryimagesmagazine.co.uk | 51
T
ake two of the world’s greatest classical voices, get them to sing a selection of their favourite hymns, arias and popular songs, and what do you have? One of the fastest-selling albums nowadays of any genre.
“We had a massive fight, I won and I got what I wanted,” says Russell. In reality they quickly agreed on the tracks.
Aled Jones and Russell Watson are continuing their partnership with their first tour together, stopping off in Nottingham where they will perform numbers from their debut offering In Harmony. And after speaking to the pair of them I reckon they could carve out a new career for themselves: on the stand-up comedy circuit. Aled was in London where he had just presented the breakfast show on the radio station Classic FM while Russell was in Cheshire. Despite being more than 150 miles apart, they continually made each other – and me – laugh. So much so that at one point no one could speak because they were guffawing so much. I ought to have known what to expect when I joined a conference call which linked the three of us. When prompted to state his name, a voice called out “the one who’s not Russell Watson!” The conversation soon had a light-hearted edge. When I asked Aled and Russell, who first sang together on the Songs of Praise show The Big Sing nine years ago, why it

had taken them so long to collaborate again, Aled chimed up: “It took us that long to get over how bad it was the first time!” Russell shot back: “I haven’t slept since.” For a brief moment they became serious. “To be honest with you,” said Aled, “we both lead busy lives and the time I suppose wasn’t right. For the first album the time was right. It took a couple of calls, a couple of texts and the next thing we know we’re doing the album.” Russell said the pair had known each other for almost 20 years and had met at a charity event at the Royal Albert Hall. Since then they had become “good pals”. “You can walk into a room, meet somebody for the first time and immediately you know whether you can have a laugh with them and whether you’re going to get on with them. Aled makes me laugh, I enjoy his company and we get on really well.” Russell says he can’t wait to go on tour because they will have fun as well as doing something they both enjoy: singing. Aled agrees. “The thing that’s come out of it which is brilliant is that our voices really blend together. There was no guarantee at all that that would happen.” When I ask who chose the tracks that would go on the album, they were back to their mischievous selves. “We had a massive fight, I won and I got what I wanted,” says Russell. In reality they quickly agreed on the tracks. They also concurred on what the touring show should be.
“The tour is very much a reflection of the album,” says Aled. “We’re both used to being on stage on our own but this is the first time properly that we’re doing a tour with somebody else. We’ve sung with other people in one-off concerts but for this tour we’ll be singing duets for all of it.” One of the problems facing any entertainer is “corpsing” – laughing uncontrollably. My fear is that this will happen to the pair of them while they’re on stage. Aled is concerned too – but in Aled’s individual way. “We were having a chat about this the other day. We’re the biggest corpsers in the world. Sometimes Russell has this glint in his eye which sets me off – which is very unprofessional of him.” “We’ve had a couple of moments,” says Russell, “where we’ve been doing certain things that are meant to be very serious and then I’ll give Aled a little look, raise an eyebrow and he’ll start laughing. As soon as he starts laughing I start laughing and that’s it, game over.” But once the tour actually starts, Russell hopes sanity will be restored: “Once we get on stage and there’s an audience, the dynamic changes. You’ve got the adrenalin from being in a big venue and everything else. “Initially I hope I don’t forget the words, remember where to walk on stage, where to come off, say the right things between the songs. There’s all these different things going on in your head.” Aled interjects that he’s hoping to remember the dance routines as well. “Yes, the dance routines are huge,” maintains Russell. “There’s this moment when I do a triple back flip into a full pirouette and then I end up in the splits. I’ve practised that a lot but I’m struggling with the splits.” “I’d pay good money to see that,” states Aled.
People have been paying to see Aled and Russell for a number of years and both are successes in their own right. Aled Jones MBE was born on 29 December 1970 in Llandegfan, Anglesey. He became famous for the cover version of Walking In The Air, the song from Channel 4’s animated film The Snowman, based on the book by Raymond Briggs. By the time his voice broke when he was 16 he’d recorded 16 albums, sold more than six million records and sung for Pope John Paul II, the Queen and the Princess of Wales. He married Claire in 2001 and they have two children, one of whom is an actress. Russell Watson was born on 24 November 1966 in Irlam, Lancashire. While he was spending the first eight years of his working life in a factory making nuts and bolts he never imagined he would later be described as one of the world’s greatest classical singers. After winning a local radio talent competition his career took off. His debut album The Voice held the number one spot in the UK classical charts for a record 52 weeks and also held the number one spot in the USA. He suffered serious health problems just over ten years ago when he twice had a brain tumour which threatened his life as well as his singing career. But he recovered and his illness made him appreciate his two daughters all the more. He is now married to his second wife, Louise.
After the In Harmony tour you would expect the pair of them to work together again although Russell isn’t so sure: “I’ll never work with him again. The whole onstage persona, TV, backstage – it’s all just an act.” After another spell of chuckling he sets the record straight: “I’d definitely work with Al again. It’s been a great experience. There’s no question that I’d want to repeat that. “It’s rare in the music industry that you get these moments where it’s great fun. I have to go back a long, long way before I can remember when I had this much fun working with somebody in the music industry.” Their record company is pressing for a follow-up because In Harmony has almost reached gold status. “If I’m being absolutely honest,” says Russell, “I genuinely thought I would never have another gold record again. This has been incredible. It’s very rare that artists are handed gold discs any more because the industry’s changed so much and people don’t buy CDs. It won’t be long before they’re obsolete. To gain a gold record on sales is quite a feat and we’re really proud of that.”
Aled Jones and Russell Watson will be In Harmony at Nottingham’s Royal Concert Hall on Wednesday 2 October.
Next year will be Russell’s 20th anniversary as a recording artist and it will be 30 years since he first walked on stage professionally. While he’s celebrating those landmarks Aled will be touring Australia as well as continuing his presentation work. Another album and tour may be on the horizon. And I wouldn’t put it past them to stage a few comedy gigs as well. My chuckle muscles have only just recovered… www.countryimagesmagazine.co.uk | 53

P
eople have been living around Deepdale for thousands of years. Their early burial mounds are on the surrounding heights and, nearby, is the mysterious stone tomb of Five Wells. Badly damaged by Victorian archaeologists, there were once two chambers within this elongated limestone cairn containing pottery and flint tools. Chelmorton is a linear village with its houses filling the gaps between farms. They all use water which flows from a well above the road end – it goes by the delightful name of Illy Willy Water. The 700 year-old parish church is dedicated to St John the Baptist and the traditional locust weather vane commemorates the time he spent in the wilderness.
Left: Deepest Deepdale Below: Dogs have their own barrel at the Church Inn
The village sits at the lower half of a west-facing slope, covered by a unique pattern of narrow enclosed fields – the preserved relics of medieval husbandry. Oxen were used to drag simple ploughs and these lumbering beasts were difficult to turn. As a result, fields tended to be long and narrow, with each farmer working those around his farm and sharing common grazing on larger fields beyond the village. Deepdale to the north of Chelmorton is a complete contrast to the ancient fields above the ravine. With the exception of the stark ugliness of Topley Pike Quarry, the dale is completely unspoiled and nature is in command. Away from the quarry, the path is across rough stony ground and care must be taken, otherwise a twisted ankle could mar a fascinating walk.

Specialised plants and shrubby trees live on the sparse rock-strewn soil. The dale bottom is damp, but above it, dry scree slopes lead to limestone crags. Caves in the outcrops on both sides of the dale below Raven’s Tor, were once the dwellings of stone-age people. 8. Keep left where the dale forks, using a wide grassy path known as the Priest’s Way, along what is now Horseshoe Dale. The name Priest’s Way probably dates from the time when much of the land in the Peak District was owned by various monasteries. The track would be used to link the grange, a monastic farm near Brierlow, with grazing on land above King’s Sterndale. The roughly worked opening at the bottom of Bullhay Dale on your left, is an adit, or mine entrance. This one-time lead mine was worked for its content of fluorspar in recent years. A useless hindrance to lead miners, fluorspar is
used in toothpaste, or as a flux in steel making and as a source of the gas fluorine. What was once a waste product is now a valuable commodity. Do not enter the mine, as it is in a dangerous condition. 9. Walk uphill and then go through the abandoned stock-yard to reach a wicket gate offering access on to the main road. Turn left and follow the road, continuing with it past the turning for Chelmorton for a total of about 400 yards. 10. Turn right, away from the road, opposite a black painted corrugated iron shed and walk along a narrow path working its way round the ancient field system. Go diagonally to the right at the lane end. 11. Go to the right on to another access track and follow it towards the village. 12. Reaching the village, turn left and walk up to the pub.

Two Trains Running
Derby Theatre 22 to 26 October
There’s a controversial new president in the White House, and racial tensions are on the rise. It is Pittsburgh, 1969, and the regulars of Memphis Lee’s restaurant are struggling to cope with the turbulence of a rapidly changing world. The diner is in threat of being torn down, a casualty of the city’s renovation project that is sweeping away the buildings of a community, but not its spirit. The iconic American playwright August Wilson paints a vivid portrait of everyday lives in this defining moment of American history. When Two Trains Running opened on Broadway in 1992, its legendary première won Tony and Drama Desk Awards. Directed by Nancy Medina, the 2018 winner of the RTST Sir Peter Hall Director Award, this major revival will introduce this Pulitzer Prize short listed modern classic to UK-wide audiences for the first time. www.countryimagesmagazine.co.uk | 57

'Sitting'
the plague of our times
P
osture is really important, and posture affects everything that you do in life. It’s important in order to move, to feel, to be well. It’s not just how straight you can stand – it’s how you hold your body when you’re sitting. It’s your exercise form when you’re moving your body and keeping it in action. It’s the way you hold your physicality when you’re sleeping, when you’re at work. Your posture is the mechanics of your body and how you live your life, and it affects how you can live your life and how you can move. Once upon a time, proper posture was a priority and though people sat in non-ergonomic chairs, working 12 hours a day, in stressful situations doing close-quartered work, being posturally aware, they had good posture. Now, 50 years later, in society there has been a decline of the good habit of posture, a shifting emphasis away from carriage and posture as being an important thing that people of character looked to and worked for. Computers ushered in a whole new era of posture problems, with people hunched over first desktops, then laptops, and a problem that is progressively worsening in our society. Tech-neck has become short-hand for the low-grade pain that many people walk around with, complaining about, and take to be “normal.” With people spending so much time sitting, the core muscles of sitting are not activating, resulting in the long-term in changes in spinal mechanics resulting in neck and back pain and other physiological functions such as breathing. Article by Paul Ashburner -register Osteopath, posture Specialist

Ron Brooks Toyota wins coveted
Franchised Dealership of The Year Award
R
on Brooks Toyota, now run by the second and third generations of the founding family, has operated from the same site in Ilkeston, Derbyshire since it was awarded a Toyota franchise in 1973. Before that it sold French-built Simca.
In times of multinational car dealerships Ron Brooks stands apart and it is refrshing to to see an independent dealership thriving. Ron Brooks has redeveloped and expanded the facility several times since 1973, opening a new
showroom in 2005 and also building large new workshops. The Ron Brooks business has been so successful — financially and also in achieving high levels of customer satisfaction — that it is regarded as one of the star performers across the country. It also has a special relationship with the nearby Toyota factory in Burnaston coming top in Toyota’s BRIT — Best Retailer in Town — awards on two out of three balanced scorecard measures and came second in the UK on the third measure. Although its founder died over 20 years ago, the business continues to foster an atmosphere of “buying a car from Ron” and always asking
itself “What would Ron do?”. It operates on a basis of developing long-term relationships with its customers and, while developing succession plans in anticipation of future retirements and employing apprentices, it has a large number of long service employees. Holiday entitlement increases for those with longer service. It also is closely involved in the community, sponsoring several local and youth sports teams. When it opened a second dealership in Mansfield, key staff from Ilkeston spent time ensuring that the company’s culture was embedded in the new operation. The dangers of e-cigs and vaping for your pet
J
The trend for ‘vaping’ has completely sky-rocketed over the last couple of years
ust about every town and city high street has a vaping lounge or a store selling electronic (“e”) cigarettes and the associated paraphernalia. Currently, the jury is out as to whether vaping is more beneficial than traditional smoking and whether there are long-term health risks attributable to this activity so far, the broad consensus is that there are fewer harmful chemicals in vape ‘smoke’; essentially it just contains water vapour and the constituents of the intensely heated oil, liquid, or ‘juice’ – normally nicotine at whatever percentage concentration, or CBD variants. The carbonisation/burning of tobacco in traditional smoking, releases many more chemicals; many of which we now know to be carcinogenic. Nicotine is very toxic to your pet and unfortunately, the smaller the bodyweight, the less is needed to cause clinically significant problems. Just 0.5-1mg per 1kg weight is toxic, and 4-5mg per 1kg is considered lethal.
THE MAIN DANGER TO YOUR FURRY FAMILY MEMBERS IS THE E-LIQUID ITSELF It is vitally important, therefore, that these liquids are stored safely and securely away out of any pets’ reach. Cats and dogs are naturally curious and their keen senses of smell will pique their interest in the e-liquid. As we all know, they will lick, chew, eat, or drink pretty much anything! Depending on the strength of the e-liquid, if kitty got hold of it, it could literally be the case that ‘curiosity killed the cat’ – not something any of us here at Saint Leonard Veterinary Centre want to see happen. Whilst the spotlight is on our feline companions, I’d like to draw your attention to something that you probably aren’t aware of. Your kitty (like all cats) has a particular sensitivity to a chemical called Propylene Glycol, or PG as it’s known. Why am I telling you this, you ask?

Well, PG is a component found in an awful lot of commercial e-liquids and it has been linked in studies to a condition called ’Heinz Body Anaemia’. In a nutshell, this condition means that your cats’ red blood cells have a greatly diminished ability to carry Oxygen around their body. Never a good thing, as I’m sure you realise. WHAT SHALL I DO IF THEY GET HOLD OF IT? Let’s imagine that despite your best efforts, Fido or Kitty have managed to get to your vape liquid – luckily though, you’ve spotted them! What should you do? Firstly, wash any residue off their fur and skin with good old fashioned soap and water (easier said than done with water-phobic cats, I know!), as nicotine is easily absorbed through the skin. Once you’ve done that, and washed any off your own skin, try to rinse their mouths out with water if they’ll tolerate it. Don’t get bitten in the process! I’d really like you to attempt it though – unfortunately nicotine is even more readily absorbed by the oral mucous membranes than it is by the skin. Symptoms of nicotine poisoning usually begin to be seen within an hour of the animal ingesting it. If your fur-baby has absorbed nicotine into their body you’ll commonly see a lack of co-ordination/tremors/ seizures, weakness/lethargy/depression (or conversely, hyperactivity), excessive salivation or drooling, diarrhoea, vomiting, dilated pupils, rapid breathing or breathlessness, and cardiac (heart) arrhythmias. I’m sure you’re getting the seriousness of nicotine poisoning to your beloved pet, but I am just going to emphasise the point; don’t muck about, if you suspect this has happened get pooch or puss straight here to SLVC. If you remember (and I appreciate it’s a stressful situation, but please try to), bring the bottle of e-liquid with you; there are different percentage strengths of nicotine, and we need to know what we’re dealing with as soon as possible. If left untreated, the nicotine poisoning can cause paralysis of the lung muscles, leaving your pet unable to breathe and possibly dying as a result if there is no-one around to perform Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). We all like to think that this will never happen to us, but sadly it does. I fervently hope that we never have to see your muchloved pet here at SLVC in these circumstances; but if we do, rest assured that I and the rest of the team will be doing our utmost for them. Care and management would routinely include giving emetics (to make them vomit) and activated charcoal to ‘mop up’ as much nicotine left in the stomach as possible to stop further absorption and damage. We would also give them fluids intravenously, as well as drugs to decrease their heart rate and blood pressure if necessary. If your pet was having seizures we would also administer medication to stop this continuing. Close monitoring of their vital signs would continue for as long as needed, and we may sneak in a few cuddles with them where possible – purely to reassure them, you know. I can’t say it enough; please, please, please take extra care to keep these liquids away from your fur-baby. Until next time; stay safe, stay well, and be happy.
We’ve been in care for over 30 years and one thing remains the same. We deliver great care, from our family, to yours.
