Winter Golf Offers As the winter months approach, golf gets squeezed into shorter days and the need to book your round in advance becomes vital. It’s quite noticeable that many courses seem to slow down in the afternoons during the summer months and yet in the winter months the afternoons can be the warmest parts of the day. If like me, you also slow down a little over the winter due to being extremely nesh, I find that the driving ranges, provided by many clubs, give me the opportunity to keep it all going and not lose my mojo. Clubs are now vigorously advertising their winter packages. There is so much on offer out there at the minute, with clubs offering lower joining fees, attractive membership packages and cheaper rounds. Golf has become very competitive over the years with many clubs realising that people have lots of choice and need to be an ‘attractive’ club to gain members.
Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire are, I feel, blessed with some of the best clubs in the country. We can rival anywhere and boast of our prowess at giving any level of golfer a challenge. From the unrivalled views from the top of New Mills GC and Chevin GC to the open undulating lowlands of Chilwell GC and The Nottinghamshire GC to name but four, we are very fortunate as golfers. If only our golf could match the surroundings. There are a few clubs in our immediate area that over the years we haven’t had the chance to play so in 2017 we hope to bring you reports on them. We do get invites to play around the country and, whilst we will take some of the offers up, we do want to make local clubs our priority. If you would like us to report on your course please get in touch with us at info@imagespublishing.co.uk We do hope that you enjoy this issue and that it gives you plenty of food for thought as to where to play over the winter.

Chilwell Manor Progress! Ahh, that’s a dirty word at some golf courses. I have heard that if you say this word at certain golf clubs you will be led out, tarred and feathered, and will spend your life forever an outcast where the only option is to take up Footgolf! The thought of having their beloved tree cut down or favourite hole redesigned or green dug up and re-laid is just too much for some members. But let me tell you this, even your Royal St David, the Belfry, Gleneagles and the hallowed turf of St Andrews, dig up, remove, and reshape to keep the course enjoyable to play. Do you think their army of green keepers are there just to mow the fairway! 8 www.countygolfer.co.uk
Fortunately in the Midlands we have golf clubs that are not afraid to progress ! One of these is Chilwell Manor Golf Club. Over the past 30 years they have dug up all 18 of their greens, and over a period of five years re-laid and re-profiled them, they have also paid for substantial drainage work to make the course playable throughout the winter. But the most
drastic change to happen in the past couple of years was that they have employed the services of Golf Course Surveyors who came and surveyed the course, and who’s job it was to assess it with impartial eyes and improve it, thus making it more enjoyable to play. This resulted in a hole by hole plan to remove trees and bushes that should not be on the course. But they have not stopped there, they employed a new head green keeper (Dan Wheatley) who also shared their vision. So it was that we received a call from the club secretary to come and have a round of golf
with him and see the changes for ourselves. Now I promise you this, that Chilwell Manor Golf Club is one of the friendliest around. They have a nice modern club house with sky sports, good ale on the bar, and serve a good sturdy breakfast which I recommend you try, all at the same time. The Pro shop is conveniently placed next to the first hole so if you find you’re down to range balls or balls with Kevin written on them, you can now stock up on your Pro V’s (put them on the business card).
The first hole is a good one to get you going, a relatively easy hole, a par 4 315 yards, basically a long drive aimed at the bunker in the centre of the fairway, leaving a short iron to the green. I did notice that on this hole, down the left of the fairway, the trees and bracken used to be quite dense, but now like me if your ball does roll in there, you can find it and hit out of it, you don’t want to be loosing your Pro V on the first hole!!
Heading home on the 18th Look at those large greens
Steve going for a long put
On the 3rd 413 yard par 4 you see more of the improvements . It’s a dog leg right and you need to be hitting a good drive here, hugging the left of the fairway or as close as you dare. This will give you sight of the green which has a large water hazard on the left, they have really cleaned up the area around the green so you have a better view of it. It’s a stoke index 1 so I was happy to get a par. The next major change you will see is on the 5th 395 yard par 4 , this hole, doglegs right across a dyke with the obvious obstacle, a tree in the centre of the gap. I exclaimed “they’ve missed a tree, where is my chainsaw”, but apparently they decided to leave this in for the fun element, to be fair I came nowhere near to hitting it, but it just leaves that bit of doubt in your mind. On the right of the hole the corner of the dog-leg used to have
large dense trees, these have been pushed back giving you more sight of the corner, a vast improvement in my book. The next few holes parallel each other and I noticed that the trees have been cut back to allow the air to flow between the fairways, this keeps them healthy and reduces damp and moss creeping into them. Newby and myself discussed how nice the definition between the rough and fairway was making the course look picture perfect. The 8th 413 yard par 4 is a relatively straight hole, a big accurate drive is needed as it, like the other parallel fairways, is lined with trees, even if you get a good drive away you have a big second shot onto the green as a dyke cuts in front of it. In true Lefty style I managed to find all the obstacles on the hole, you know me, I love playing behind trees and out of water filled dykes! When I eventually got to the green, I could see it was raised and undulating, I quite enjoyed putting on it. You now cross over a road to play the next 9, starting with a 156 yard par 3. This hole is my Nemesis, I have never hit the green, I’ve been short, to the left, to the right and even off the back and on the road which runs adjacent to it on the left! So this time I was determined. With a small crowd gathering as
they came of the 17th, I teed off. It was sailing toward the flag, which by the way was placed right behind a bunker, it was the tiger line, going straight for the flag onto the top lip of the bunker and it embedded itself in the sand, a 5 followed. It defeated me once again! Another noticeable change is on the 11th, 344 yard par 4 where there used to be some huge conifer trees on the right of the fairway that seemed to be taking over, well they have gone thank goodness, making this hole look so much better and also the green on the 15th that used to have these lurking at the back. I need to tell you that on the day it was either torrential downpour or 30 degrees sunshine and the waterproofs were on and off all day, then the rain decided to stick around at which point we had to take shelter it was so bad. We decided we would just sit it out and see if all that money spent on drainage had paid off, well I’m pleased to report that I didn’t need to put the wellies on, as soon as the rain had stopped there were no puddles to be seen anywhere even on the greens.
The re-laid greens look fantastic
Off the whites you need a driver on this par 3
Thinned out trees framing the fairway
By the time we hit the 18th the sun was shining and the clubhouse was welcoming us home, I was walking with Steve Hoy (Hon House Secretary) and discussing the problems with golf today and what we thought could improve membership. We often get asked our opinion on the matter, the answer is this, make golf accessible to all and enjoyable, have a course that always improves, make it a joy to play, not so difficult that you feel that you would never play again. Offer a clubhouse that has sport on the TV, which serves food and good ale and lager, changing facilities that are new and up to date. The Members need to play their part by being welcoming and using it for their social events. Chilwell Manor tick all these boxes, this is a club that’s not prepared to stand still, the investment they have made now will keep this club going for another 100 years and I for one can’t wait to come back and play it, I will only be 140 years old.

As I was staying in a hotel on the beautiful island of Mauritius it would be a crime not to play a golf course! So myself (Stav the Greek) and ‘Hodders’ asked the hotel reception to arrange a round of golf at the Ile aux Cerfs golf club. After a short phone call everything was arranged. Excited!
Mauritius
Pick up was early, 7am early. We both met up for breakfast and waited for the mini bus. After a short mini bus ride we arrived at a big entrance to the golf club. Beautifully neat grass and hedges surrounded the roadway and the golf course name ILE AUX CERFS, made you feel like you were going somewhere special. After a drive down a long driveway we were dropped off at the boat house. Not often do you have a boat house on a
golf course! There we waited to be picked up by the speed boat, but as we waited we were reminded we were on a tropical island by the presence of a huge spider above our heads. Easily 3inchs long, we gave it a wide berth! After a boat trip of around 10mins we arrived at the island, and greeted by a well mannered young man with a golf buggy to drive us to the club house. We were provided with a buggy with touch screen gps and a full set of Callaway golf clubs each. We were given 3 balls each. I had a feeling that might not be enough, ha! Then after a brief spell on the driving range we made our way to the first tee, a par 4. The first thing you notice here is a
“With turquoise water and white sand to the left and lush green tropical plants to the right”
ILE AUX CERFS Designed by the two-time masters champion Bernhard Langer, the golf club is accessible to players of all levels. The course covers the southern half of the Ile aux Cerfs island with the holes snaking up and down the length of the island, boasting natural undulations, volcanic rock outcrops, lakes and gullies, and a variety of tropical trees and plants. All 18 holes of this island golf have views of the Indian Ocean. Expansive white sand bunkers and water set off the natural backdrop of trees and vegetation perfectly. 18 www.countygolfer.co.uk
Water is an essential feature of the course. There are nine lakes in all, and three of the holes require tee shots across sea inlets to the fairways. The luscious turf is Salam Seashore Paspalum grass, which is resilient in the tropical climate and allows the highest standards of course conditioning. In 2013, upgrading works were carried out on the front nine holes in order to offer a better golfing experience to golfers. Since then, feedbacks have been enthusiastic and positive. In June 2014, the back nine holes started to be reviewed and upgraded. These major changes will enable golfers to discover a more accessible golf course, regardless of the golfer’s level. The unique island golf course of Ile aux Cerfs will definitely be one of the most stupendous golf courses in the world, a “must play” as Colin Montgomerie puts it. www.countygolfer.co.uk 19
As you approach the green on the 11th and the 12th (par 4) you have views back to Mauritius and its mountains. With turquoise water and white sand to the left and lush green tropical plants to the right. It was difficult to play golf as we spent most of the time enjoying the views! This back 9 is when we had settled into our game and starting to be more consistent.
Ile Aux Right Bunker
water hazard right in front to reach the fairway, let’s just say we had a slow start to our game and move on from there. Now the 2nd hole is interesting, down hill towards a beach. There is a path at the back of the green and we had to have a quick look before moving on to the 3rd hole. A stunning beach! Not a usual sight on a golf course in the midlands. Ha! A quick photo and we had to move on.
Ile Aux Practice Green Ile Aux Behind 4th Tee
20 www.countygolfer.co.uk
Every hole we played had a beautiful view or something of special interest, but a stand out hole for me was the 11th. It’s a par 5 dog leg to the right, and runs parallel with another beach. Myself and Hodders had great tee shots with a driver. Both straight and down the middle. I don’t have the longest drive but I ended up past the dog leg and just under the trees that separate the fairway and white sand beach. Any longer a drive and I would have been on the beach, I can think of worse places to be!
The final two holes were a great finish. The 17th had a huge mangrove area that needed a good tee shot to clear. Thankfully I was hitting straighter now and we both landed on the fairway. Phew! By this point I had lost a few balls to thick tropical undergrowth and we didn’t fancy looking for them, as you can imagine the wildlife that could be in there! The 18th was the hardest index 1 and a bit confusing. It’s a long par 4 and after we both had a good tee shot we were now left with a choice of two greens! Both with flags and playable. One to the left with great views over the bay and back to Mauritius and the other up on the right behind the clubhouse. That green is the one we played. It was surrounded by a gully, volcanic rock and thick vegetation; challenge accepted. We both hit the green managing to clear the gully, and finished an amazing round with a par. After returning our equipment and going back to the boat house ready to be picked up, we reflected on an experience that we might never have again. Obviously frustrated that we could have played better but totally satisfied that we could enjoy such a course. If you ever have the opportunity to play this course, I thoroughly recommend it. And maybe bring a change of clothes so you can enjoy the beach and a cocktail or two after your round!

SAUNTON SANDS
ROYAL NORTH DEVON We arrived to a nice greeting and some of the best sausage butties I have seen for a long time, so after filling our bellies with hot food and drink, looking out over the golf course from a very grand conservatory window, we were ready to brave the elements in our Galvins. The one thing you will notice about Royal North Devon is the history that surrounds you from the very start, within the changing rooms there are old oak doors and pictures and on show in the dining room is a museum of old clubs and honour boards dating way back. It all embellishes the history of this club, to think who has trod the same boards in 1864 as we did that morning beggars belief. Once all kitted up we walked to the first tee, and surprisingly although it was raining quite badly the wind wasn’t hitting us hard which makes a change for a coastal links course. The teams were chosen, Newby and the Terrier and Lefty and myself, we all hit cracking first drives into the very damp slightly foggy sky. What a cracking first opening hole, a par 5 that can be reachable in two but there is a little burn just to test you have hit the 2nd shot well, which I just managed to get over and chip onto the green missing the birdie putt, but got a safe par. The greens were very true and got faster as we made our way around as the greenkeeper 22 www.countygolfer.co.uk
Come and play golf in the promised land of sun, sea, sand and surf I was told, it has given it to be fine and we are playing two of the best courses in Devon. That sounds fantastic I said, so I got my bag, clubs and shoes all cleaned up ready for the trip. Past history has told me though that although Newby and Lefty are blessed with picking some of the best courses to play in the country they are not Michael Fish or John Kettley for that matter, so I packed another pair of golf shoes and plenty of socks. This was the least of my worries because as we drove into Devon the clouds were very dark and low, and as it started to tip it down I thought I may need to take the boys up on their offer of using their wet suit to play in instead.
was ironing them along the way. I would really love to go back and play North Devon again as on a nice day I bet the views are unbelievable, but with the sea mist we did not get to see that much of the scenery, but we saw plenty of the course that has not changed much since the original layout. You could imagine Harold Hilton standing there looking at the lie of the land and picturing what shape each hole could be. The amazing thing that you do not see in many of the top 100 courses in the world is livestock, that is actually grazing on the course while you tee off, and I am sure I saw one or two of them smile as we hit our balls into the large reed beds that surround the fairways. Once you are in there it is just a reload. Each hole has its own test and I am sure that when the wind blows that test will be three fold.
There are some cracking holes, some quite short that you can open the shoulders but some that you have to plot your way around to give you a good second shot into the green, all in all a great test for any golfer and definitely worth a visit when down in Devon. This was a pleasant surprise for me not having played in Devon before, even though it was raining again and we had to dry off the days play in our rooms the night before, making it feel like I had been in a Turkish bath all night. No, it was the fact that I did not know that the course I was about to play would fall into my top 3 alltime favourites. There was no disappointments at all from walking into the very modern club house and well stocked Pro shop, to eyeing up the first tee shot on the 1st hole on the West Course, everything was as I hoped it would be from what Lefty had told me. As I looked out over the raised tee on the first the view was unbelievable, the sand dunes in Devon that the East & West courses of Saunton Sands merge between are amazing. The first two holes are the best that I have played and that includes the Old Course at St Andrews, Allwoodley in Leeds and St Georges Hill. I won’t explain how my tee shot went, all I can say is, you must play with decent accuracy because
if you are off the first cut of rough you need to reload. This didn’t put me off as the 2nd hole brought even more delight. In fact even though I had got some very soggy socks and my golf www.countygolfer.co.uk 23
SAUNTON SANDS (cont’d) wasn’t up to much the first 9 holes, nothing could spoil the excitement of getting on to the next tee to see what this golf course could throw at us. I managed to pull my golf together for the second nine which is a good job as Lefty had held it together for us on the front 9 so there wasn’t much in it on the scores. Just one mention about the 9th hole, this was a 141 yard par 3 and was absolutely spectacular. The green was surrounded by bushes and there was water at the front of the green, I’ve never seen such a par 3 on a links course. I hit a wedge and went through the back due to the wind, which you don’t feel because of the shelter the bushes give you, so take care when playing this hole. We followed the course layout between the sand dunes and was amazed how it opens up and then closes in on you, plus how deceptive the designers have been as everything seems very far away but actually you have to trust the yardage otherwise the hazards soon swallow you up and the bunkers are definitely hazards.
BURNHAM & BERROW GOLF CLUB Another special mention about the 15th and 16th holes, the 15th was a short blind par 4 with again great use of the dunes, when you get around the corner you think it should have been a driver over the hill side as it is reachable for the bigger hitters but with plenty of risk. I think I may have been the only one to make a par here so it made the match very interesting. We then took a walk up another dune playing down to a very nice par 3 which again is unusual for a links course. This again is one of the reasons why I very much enjoyed this course. The final 2 holes are a good challenge; with a good drive needed and a second shot.
This championship links is particularly noted for its distinct sand hills that form stubborn, natural obstacles, along with its hostile buckthorn, a marsh mid-way through the round and the prevailing south westerly winds that whip in from the Atlantic and along the Bristol Channel. The club’s first professional was the legendary JH Taylor, five times an Open Champion, who described the course as “one of the most sporting courses conceivable”. ST ENODOC
I cannot praise this course highly enough and I have heard people say that the East Course is the better of the two so I definitely need to take another trip to Devon to find out for myself.
Cornwall’s St Enodoc is another links ‘once trodden, never forgotten’. Founded in 1890, it was designed by the revered James Braid and is set among the dunes overlooking the River Camel estuary and with far-reaching views over the north Atlantic Ocean. Recent refurbishments, under the guidance of Peter McEvoy (who has said “St Enodoc is a fabulous course, one of the finest links courses in the world”), have included laying new greens and tees. Across the Camel River from St Enodoc and over the majestic Trevose Head that juts into the Atlantic Ocean, Trevose Golf & Country Club offers a brilliant links designed by Harry Colt. With only a gentle breeze the 7,179-yard Championship Course offers good scoring opportunities, particularly with 3 par 5’s, but the character of the course is transformed when the wind blows in from the sea. Testament to the quality of the course, Trevose has staged the English Amateur Stroke play Championship, or Brabazon Trophy as it is known, in 2008 and in 2012 hosted the McGregor Trophy (English Under 16s Open Strokeplay). ROYAL NORTH DEVON GOLF CLUB After a 4am start, is there a better way to wake up than by being hit by a stiff Atlantic wind and driving rain! The Royal North Devon Golf Club(or RND as it’s known) holds the title of England’s oldest golf club, dating back to 1864. It quite astonishingly still has a virtually unchanged layout, still playing as it would have been played 150 years ago in Victorian England.
RND’s collection of old golf balls
Situated on the West Coast of Devon on common land, this links course runs in and out between the dunes along the coast which gives it, its natural, gentle undulations. In an area I’ve visited many times for holidays, it’s a course that has always intrigued me, having only seen the opening couple of holes from the road.
All UK links courses suffer the same problem, on a hot blue-skied summers day they are an absolute joy to play. Sadly the English weather doesn’t always deliver these conditions, and when the wind blows, and the rain drives down, a round on even the best course can become a battle. On our arrival we were sadly greeted with the latter! After a 4am start and a 5 hour journey down though, it would have taken 3 feet of snow and lightening to stop us playing and enjoying our round. The history hits you as soon as you enter the club house where you get a feel for its rich history from the golf museum, honors boards and the clubs top competition trophies. Nowhere else can you see an honors board that starts at 1864 and runs through to today. It’s a Who’s Who of English Golf. I’d considered bringing a wetsuit down with me on the off chance I could sneak in a quick surf whilst down there (Saunton/Croyd/Putsbrough all within 10 minutes drive!), I wouldn’t have been any dryer if I had worn it to be fair, as the rain really hit us hard at the start of the round. Quite incredibly though, even whilst the rain was coming down, the course played like it was bone dry, not a puddle, not a splash. The first 2 holes are quite open and flat as you play your way out towards the coastline, but when you get to the 3rd the course suddenly seems to really wake up, as you start to play through the
“ undulations. At this point you start to get the feel of a truly classic links course. Anything off line requires some serious recovery, but stick to the fairways and you get a great roll, adding yards to your drive even on a wet day. The 7th hole is a real standout hole, the green isn’t visible even from the elevated tee, you play down avoiding well placed bunkers to the right, before playing a shot back up the hill onto the green. A quite brilliant hole to play, as are the following few holes as you walk in the footsteps of some of golfs greatest, John Henry Taylor, Harry Vardon, James Braid and JH Taylor to name just a few. All have played at RND. After the 16th you come back out of the dunes, and the course opens up again as you play your way back towards the clubhouse, being careful not to hit any of the free roaming livestock on the way.

Myself and The Terrier had challenged Lefty and Spencer to Stableford four-balls for the two days. A little bit of competition always adds to the game, and ensures you keep your focus, despite the stunning views of North Devon’s coastlines around us. With never more than 2 points in it, the sledging hit new height (or lows as case maybe). But Lefty held his nerve and sank a 10ft putt on the 18th
green, they claimed a 1point victory, and with that the banter began! Since RND last held the Open Championships the game has changed so much, as have the courses they’re played on. Manicured perfection RND is not! But if you love golf you really need to visit RND, it’s where it all started in England, just to see the history and walk the fairways, is an incredible experience. It’s a truly historic place and a fantastic challenge as well. We would like to thank Atlantic links for arranging the trip for us, Royal North Devon Golf Club for their hospitality the long range binoculars are well worth a look through in the club house. And Saunton Sands Golf Club for letting us play their excellent West Course, and a special thank you to the Royal and Fortescue Hotel in Barnstaple for putting us up for the night. Big Investment in New Fleet of Machinery for Chevin Golf Club This year has seen a lot of investment into the club. The clubhouse conservatory area has been completely reglazed and redecorated earlier in the year. Sky TV has been bought into the club giving the members a very pleasant atmosphere in the bar and lounge areas. In the office, the outdated IT systems have been upgraded to a high standard and the largest investment is now to be made when Chevin Golf Club will be taking delivery of a new fleet of Toro mowers in the next month.
Whilst we have always tried to present the course at its best, getting this new machinery will enable the green staff to improve the condition of the course further. The members and especially the green keeping staff are looking forward to this machinery arriving with the prospect of our course being improved to an even better standard than in the past. Now that our new catering team are settled in we are able to offer catering for visitors and groups, 7 days a week, with extra special deals available on Mondays.
The fleet will consist of the following equipment:
Cheshire Turf Machinery will be providing the state of the art equipment, which will enable Chevin to maintain its’ golf course to the best possible standards. General Manager Andy Mellor said the existing old and outdated fleet was struggling to cope with the demands of the terrain at Chevin and the arrival of the new fleet will provide a capability that will enable the green keeping staff to maintain the course to a standard expected from one of Derbyshire’s finest courses.
(See our advertisement) Our General Manager, Andy will be pleased to discuss rates with any visitors. Our Open Competitions for 2017 are now on our website. www.chevingolf.co.uk The investments we are making into the club will enable members, both present and future, and visitors to enjoy our course, with its magnificent views over Derbyshire and then to relax in the clubhouse with a drink, some tasty food and friendly company.

I find it’s always good to start a round of golf feeling relaxed. Get rid of the distractions of the day, and concentrate on getting a good round in, as well as having a good time trying to win a competition. That is the aim at Morley Hayes today. Well a top three finish at least. First off a bacon sandwich and a coffee which is always top notch. It’s not my usual way but a quick pint looking out over the course from the balcony has loosened up the joints just in time for the tee off. As always the course is in great condition. Flags in tricky positions to keep you thinking at each green, and sunshine too (not guaranteed for every round). It turns out the new green keeper is making some nice improvements throughout the course, and striving to advance seems to be a Morley Hayes ethos in general. They’re always looking for ways to improve on the last time you visited. A new tee position here, an altered water feature or green there. I think golf courses should change like this rather than being content with everything just because “that’s how it’s always been”.

Watching the video of our own tee shots back on the Par 3, 16th hole is certainly making for some interesting conversation over dinner. Although I’m biased as mine beat the Pro. Sorry James. At least you’ll get to tell me where I’m going wrong everywhere else on the course, as the prize is a 2 hour playing lesson. It turns out we have finished 3rd overall. Thank you for the generous prizes of hampers including wine and chocolates. I’ll have to hand those over to my wife as recompense for sneaking off for the day, but it was well worth it. Supports Drive To Get More Women & Girls Into Golf
FAME TATE
A couple of years ago Derbyshire Golf Development Officer Nigel Furniss contacted me and asked if I would help to support the National drive to get more women & girls playing golf. It was really not a difficult answer for me, as I am keen to work on projects and initiatives that help to grow the game, especially female participation where possible. I was officially named Ambassador for Derbyshire Golf this summer. So what does the role involve? Well it is not written down in writing, but wherever possible I am happy to endorse and support projects designed to increase participation and expose people to the great game of golf. For instance earlier this year Derbyshire Golf asked me if I would like to get involved with a “Special Olympics” project in Chesterfield. The project run by Derbyshire Sport brought together young people with disabilities at the new Queens Park Sports Centre on Sunday July 31, it was a great event where participants, along with their families, friends and carers were encouraged to have a go at basketball, boccia, golf and football - all for free. I was on hand to run the golf project which was a great success and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of meeting and working with some great people and their families. My work over the past three and a half years at Tapton Park has seen me introduce over 200 women to the game through my Fame Golf Academy coaching and introductory programmes. A high percentage of these ladies now play golf regularly and have
36 www.countygolfer.co.uk
joined golf clubs, including Tapton Park, Hallowes Golf Club and Beauchief Golf Course, Sheffield that I know of. This year, I have also been running coaching sessions for kids of all ages at the golf club. Every Saturday morning there is girls only coaching, mixed junior coaching and more recently an Under 6 group. These coaching sessions involve The Golf Foundation’s Junior Passport Scheme and it is a fantastic programme to get children involved in golf. The multilayered programme progresses a complete novice golfer into a junior golfer ready for membership at a golf club. This has proved to be hugely successful and we have consequently gained around a dozen new junior members at the club, since the summer. I am delighted to have been asked to work with Derbyshire Golf; I believe the work they are undertaking to develop the game in Derbyshire is well overdue. I am particularly
keen to see more young people take up the game of golf and enjoy the opportunities it can provide for them, which I have been privileged enough to experience first hand. I will be supporting and promoting the programmes to nurture the game at every level and will be rolling out a series of beginner and introductory programmes for all at Tapton Park Golf Club over the coming months. The work of Derbyshire Golf is great in trying to raise the profile of golf and raise funding. Recently this has seen them unlock £19,200 to fund two Community Golf projects which aim to introduce 1600 people to golf over the next 12 months, with a target of over 400 females. This has to be great for the game and will hopefully lead to increased numbers of participants and members. Nigel Furniss, Derbyshire Golf Development Officer commented; “We are delighted that Fame has agreed to become an ambassador for Derbyshire Golf, she clearly sees the value of our work and will help us to promote our programmes and initiatives, in particular to get more women and girls playing golf. We will strive to develop a strong relationship and help to promote and encourage the activities and programmes that Fame will deliver through the Fame Golf Academy.” Over the past 8 years the Derbyshire Golf Development Group have raised over £500,000 which has been used to drive and deliver initiatives with the aim of supporting golf clubs and facilities in Derbyshire to run projects and initiatives to increase participation and golf club membership.
Golf is a great game, it is good for your health, you burn well over 1000 calories in a game of golf, it is great for your mental health as you mix socially with other people, you are in the outdoors getting exercise which is good for your heart rate and it helps to stimulate the brain. So why not Get into Golf if you don’t already play?? England Golf Women & Girls participation Manager Lauren Spray explained “It is great news that Fame will support the National drive to attract more Women & Girls to golf. England Golf has invested over £300,000 into the 2016 national marketing campaign and aims to reach more people than ever before. I urge all clubs to take advantage of this opportunity and to run women and girls taster days and/or beginner courses as we aim to raise the profile and awareness of the social and health benefits of playing the game. These types of days are brilliant opportunities for clubs to raise their profile within their local community, as well as increasing revenue streams and membership. Further support is available via the women and girl’s factsheets which are free to download from the England Golf website www.englandgolf.org/womenandgirls. It’s definitely an opportunity not to be missed!” For more information about The Fame Golf Academy and coaching, please contact Fame on: 07500931759 or visit the website at www.famegolfacademy.com

ON TOUR WITH A LOCAL PRO James Whatley, writes for County Golfer, informing us about the life of one of Derbyshire’s top Professionals. James is AA PGA Professional, Head Professional of Morley Hayes and Academy Director of East Midlands Golf Academy.
JAMES WHATLEY
James has been ranked in the top 10 in the Midlands 7 out of the last 8 years. He has represented Great Britain and Ireland in the PGA cup against the USA, played for England in the International Team Championships and played on the European Tour. His reputation as a consistent player and a highly regarded coach is recognised by top class Amateurs and Professionals whom regularly seek his advice and knowledge on their own games. I wrote back in June how I felt Danny Willet winning the US Masters would have a massive positive impact on Golf, I really feel the game has gone from strength to strength over the last four months. Two main events jump out at me, Henrick Stenson playing arguably one of the best final rounds of Golf to defeat Phil Mickleson to win the Open Championship and the other was watching Justin rose win the Olympic Gold in Rio. Both events pushed golf into the headlines for the right reasons. I have to say I only watched the last round of the Olympics and it was fascinating to see the climax of an event which had been in the press for some high profile names withdrawing. Both Rory and Jordan have come out after saying they underestimated the event and are looking forward to Tokyo in four years time.
2016 PLAYING SEASON… A LOT OF FUN! My season has come to an end and has seen me finish 5th in the Midland Order of Merit. This is the 7th time out of the last 8 years I have finished in the top 7. In all the pro ams I’ve played this year in the Midland region I have finished in the top three at least ten times. It is the first year for a long time I can honestly say I’ve really enjoyed my golf. Although it has been a long season, combining my commitments at Morley Hayes it has been worthwhile. One of my highlights was finishing in 14th place in the British Club Pros final at the Oxfordshire. I started with a poor two over par round, dropping 4 shots in the last 5 holes and with 6 holes to go in my 2nd round I was no where making the cut, but I reeled off 4 birdies in the last 5 holes to make the cut by two. It was such a satisfying feeling knowing I could produce that kind of golf under pressure. For me, I am not a golfer who wants to swerve those situations , the bigger the occasion the better it is. If I can pass on any tips to performing under pressure, it would have to be develop and practice a solid pre shot routine. Something you
can repeat time and time again. Another highlight was finishing 4th in the National Fourball Final with friend Ian Walley. We started very slowly with a -2 70, but we followed it up with 62 and 64. We have been very consistent in this event, the last four years we haven’t finished outside the top 7, with our best finish being 2nd in 2014.
was probably the weakest part of my game.
Although I haven’t won trophies this year it has been my best stroke average since I kept stats, so for me it will be more of the same next year. Past winters I’ve got to this point and looked at my game and thought I need to re-invent the wheel. This year it will be just to keep ticking my swing over and improve my pitching as this
I must also say a massive thank-you to my two sponsors, Total Aggregates and Intercity who have continued their support of me throughout the 2016 season.

MORLEY HAYES
Winter golf isn’t for everyone so if you are one of the golfers that hardly players from now until April, spare a thought for this. Challenge yourself to touch a golf club at least once a week in the next six months. Even if it’s just picking up an old club in the house and checking your grip. Maybe have a putter in the house and practice your stroke on the lounge carpet. At least it won’t be a bobbly surface!! Or the best idea, meet your friends down at the Driving Range at Morley Hayes, hit a basket of balls then go and have a pint. I just know from experience, not touching clubs for a long time can create a lot of problems when you start playing again.
A lot of new things are in the pipe line at Morley Hayes for 2017, the Driving Range extension will go ahead , a buggy path around the course is underway and possibly one other thing that may come as a surprise to a lot of people. My lips are sealed at this point but hopefully I can report more in the New Year.

QUICK GOLF I was recently interviewed for Radio Derby about the introduction of a format of golf called ‘QUICK GOLF’ The European Tour are apparently going to trial playing 6 hole competitions, with music playing. There will be time penalties if you take longer than 30 seconds to play your shot once you have put your bag down. My personal view is, golf takes far too long. I would love to see tighter rules to quicken players up. I think the traditional 18 holes is great, but shouldn’t take longer than three hours. When myself and Silky did the 100 holes of golf in 2014, we averaged 1 hour 45 minutes to play Morley Hayes, this was off the back tees and walking / running. Unfortunately I know when we watch the Ryder Cup tomorrow, pace of play will be very slow. It needs to change from the top before the pace improves at the local clubs.

White Peaks Golf Trolley Repairs Based at Ormonde Fields Golf Club, John White began repairing golf trollies for its members in 2013. Using contacts made in the golf industry, John sources new and used parts for the major brands like Motocaddy, Powakaddy, Hillbilly and Powerbug for quick and economic repairs. John is a Motocaddy authorised service agent and handles their warranty work in Derbyshire, as well as servicing and none warranty repairs. With the ever increasing popularity of lithium batteries, John invested in a lithium/lead acid battery capacity tester and can give a condition report of any golf batteries. Occasionally trollies “go for a walk” and can end up in ditches and ponds with impact and water damage. Most golf and household policies cover this event and John can handle all the necessary paperwork required by insurance companies for repair work. John collects and repairs trollies at Cavendish, Buxton High Peak, sickleholme, Grassmoor and Shirland golf clubs on Mondays, and Maywood, Erewash Valley and Horsley Lodge golf clubs on Thursdays.Trollies requiring urgent attention can beleft at Ormonde Fields Golf Club or at his home address by prior arrangement.

MAPPERLEY
‘St. Andrews Institute Golf Club’ was founded in the early 1900’s, and by 1909 was paying its £1.00 subscription to the Notts. Union of Golf Clubs. About 1924 the Club was taken over by the Y.M.C.A and became the ‘Morley House Y.M.C.A Golf Club’. All progressed smoothly until 1931 when it was reported that because members wished to play golf on Sundays, the Golf Club should secede from the Y.M.C.A, and so in 1932 Mapperley Golf Club was established. I was quite intrigued by the course badge - a cow! However, it soon became clear why this was chosen because the clubs history records that cattle used to graze on the course. Fences were immediately erected to protect the 9 greens. The club badge now proudly sits on all Mapperley’s correspondence as a reminder of its humble and most fascinating beginnings. Wind forward to1983 and a new 18 hole Golf Course was opened by Neil MacFarlane 44 www.countygolfer.co.uk
MP, Minister for Sport. The design of the rolling parkland course, with stunning views from the clubhouse of Gedling Country Park and all the way across to the Vale of Belvoir, was by golf pro’ John Mason. Since that time, there has been a continual investment programme, involving improvements to both the Clubhouse and the Golf Course.
I last played this course in 2006, and other than remembering that I liked the course, I couldn’t actually remember much about it, but then again I struggle to remember what I had for breakfast today, so there’s no real surprise there then! This meant that I was effectively playing, for me, a new course. My first thoughts on arriving were “why on earth is the car parked packed at 10am on a Wednesday?” Simple answer, its seniors morning, and they get an increasable amount of support for it. The added advantage this made, was that the if we got our act together, got out there quickly and kept up with the last group, the half way house would be open when we got there. Now that’s motivation for you! Of course keeping up with a group of seniors is practically impossible, as its a known fact that a senior player can complete 18 holes on any golf course in under 2 and a half
hour with considerable ease! But we would give it our best shot all the same. The round didn’t start all that well, the tee shots blind over a hill and down to the green, with the fairway sloping left to right, and the ideal tee shot would have been a high line, then letting it run down to the right. The conditions were wet when we played which slowed the ball down on the fairways, but on a dry summers day you’d easily get an extra 40+ yards on your drive on this hole. With the hilly nature of the course, this is the case for a lot of the holes. A dry hot summers and you could easily knock a handful of shots off your score. Today was not however one of those days, as I managed to add handfuls of shot through bad driving and poor irons. www.countygolfer.co.uk 45
HOLES TO LOOK OUT FOR 4TH It’s a great hole, with an elevated tee you play around a sweeping fairway. It moves from right to left which leaves you with the old dilemma of how greedy you’re going to be. Add to that the 2 bunkers on the inside corner and its a real thinkers shot. With a good tee shot you’ll probably still have to play your approach shot with the ball above your feet giving an extra level of difficulty. Its a hole where there’s a lot to go wrong. 8TH A dinky little par 3 at just 119 yards on the yellows. What could possibly go wrong here??? Not much to be fair, its pretty straight forward, but that doesn’t stop it being a nice hole to play, with its views into the distance, and heather in front of the green. Even though its short you can still land before the green with no danger. (The half way house after is the added bonus!!)
This was heavily confounded by my 2 playing partners, Spencer and his wife Heidi, who had both made steady starts, being members at Sickleholme had hardened then to the conditions. What felt like hills to me were just small undulations to them and the driving rain that hit us on the last few holes was just a bit of moister! John’s back to back birdies on the 3rd and 4th put him a good mood for the round and was playing some great golf that 3 birdies for the round. Whilst Heidi was hitting straight and steady and was racking up a decent round for herself. At 5719yards the course isn’t the longest around, but what it lacks in length it makes up for in character. Its a tight course, with most fairways lined with mature tall trees, If you missed the fairway by a little bit you’re in trouble but you’ll find it. If you miss it by quite a way, its gone! I do love a course that undulates and rolls, it makes tee shots far more interesting, the views better and adds a whole new element to playing. This course gives you 46 www.countygolfer.co.uk
all that. Despite being close to the centre of Nottingham most of the time you had no idea, the thick mature trees cut out the sight and sounds of the city really well.
12TH Love this hole, 542 yard par 5, gently sweeping to the left, not great if you slice, but if you can draw the ball as a right hander you have a big advantage. After a good drive, your may still have to lay up as the approach to the green is guarded by a stream. Lovely hole to play, real challenge.
Back at the club house there’s a real homely feel to it, the staff at the bar are really welcoming, the food is good and really reasonably priced. Seb took care of us really well when we were there (Hope you eventually got your cup of tea matey :-) I’d recommend the chilli! Thanks to John Newman in the Pro shop for looking after us as well.

Reading through this years (2016) course reports in County Golfer I realised how much the team love playing golf and view golf as an enjoyable game to play with good friends.
Some may feel that their lighthearted, life as it really is, view is not quite up to ‘Masters’ standard of golf but then they don’t play as good as that either. Thinking along those lines I wondered how many in our two counties do play to that standard, and if they do why are they not in the Ryder Cup Team? We must try harder to get to scratch. However, over the past year we have been invited to play and write about golf as a game played for enjoyment. The welcome and hospitality we have received has overwhelmed us. Our reports on some of the countries top 100 courses - St Andrews, Machrihanish, Royal St Georges, Saunton (East) has led to more invites for 2017. We have even played courses that don’t ask you to wear a tie! Some will let you buy a drink in the bar without wearing a trilby or smoking a pipe! Others let you walk on the grass with no levitation required. Some now allow ladies in the clubhouse! Where will it all end? Golf is such a rich set of tapestries. Rules are made,
2016
some are broken, rules are changed, some we will never understand. I was once asked to move a yard to the right because I wasn’t allowed to buy a drink in the spot I was standing in, because that was for members only. The barman explained “It’s more than my jobs worth to serve you there” at which point we both moved a yard and he served me! Oh boy. I feel clubs need rules otherwise it will result in mayhem. But there are less rules at St Andrews than there are at some of our counties courses. I’m glad to say that many clubs have relaxed a little whilst still retaining the dignity that playing golf deserves.

So with no inhibitions, consultations, phone in, email, facebook or public/private surveys, here is a completely biased view by the County Golfer team of Lefty, Newby, Fame, Yorkshire Terrier, Spence and Badger of the courses we have played in 2016. You may argue if you wish but these are our rules. If you disagree please explain why in full on the back of a postage stamp! We’ve had a great years golf and our hearty thanks goes to all the clubs that have made our visits a real treat.

Tewkesbury Park reveals golf course upgrades
to address” explained McEvoy. “However, it’s also true to say that more casual golfers or higher-handicappers aren’t really seeing much of a performance benefit from all this new technology.
Playing surfaces are now among the finest in the West of England. New photographs show beauty and challenge of refurbished golf course
“So another goal with the course works at Tewkesbury Park was to be sympathetic to the playing majority. I think that the average golfer will also find our new-look golf course extremely playable, and naturally even more enjoyable than it was before.”
Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, England – One of the West of England’s most scenic golf hotels has completed a major series of improvements to its golf course, and has published photographs which showcase its new look. The work recently undertaken on the 6,579 yard Par 72 golf course at Tewkesbury Park, set in a commanding position overlooking Cheltenham, the Cotswolds, the Severn Valley, the Malverns and the Welsh Mountains, has transformed not only its condition, but also the level of golfing challenge and its aesthetic appearance. One highlight is the extensive re-bunkering, which has updated the golf course to meet the challenge of the modern game. The work has been overseen by experienced course designer and amateur golf icon Peter McEvoy OBE, with construction work by DAR Golf, the Irish-based bunker construction experts.
McEvoy, who remains the only British amateur golfer to make the cut at The Masters, continued: “It has been a pleasure collaborating with DAR, John Clarkin and Chris Bromley on this project, and I am very proud of what has been achieved at Tewkesbury Park.” See www.tewkesburypark.co.uk for more details.
New golf programme provides new opportunities for young golfers. Golf returned to this year’s Olympic Games after an absence of 112 years. Alongside a national campaign designed to grow interest in the sport, Chesterfield College and South Chesterfield Golf Club at Grassmoor are helping people in Derbyshire who have a passion for golf to get the skills they need to carve out a career in the industry. The college and the club are running an exciting Golf Development course from September 2017 that gives school leavers (predominantly aged 16-18) the chance to develop their skills in the game and in the industry whilst studying for a Level 2 Diploma in Sport. The course opens up what has traditionally been an elite sport and gives people in the region a chance to access a free or low cost course (depending on age) that will see them study with professional golfers and gain qualifications and experience in everything from playing and coaching to green keeping, customer service and hospitality.
Craig Pollard, Head Teaching Professional at South Chesterfield Golf Club said: “We are excited about working with the college to deliver this course. We know how important grass roots sports are at developing stars of the future. What we sometimes forget is that there are a team of people and organisations behind every Olympian or champion who have helped them to achieve success. “We need to invest in developing people to play and work in the industry to make sure we can produce champions of the future. I believe that this course will give people the right experience, skills and qualifications to help us do that.” Stuart Allen, Director of Learning for the Health Wellbeing & Society department at Chesterfield College said: “The new course we are running might not be guaranteed to produce Olympians but it is certain to give students employability skills and a chance to participate, enabling them to carve a career in a sport that they love. Developing the next generation of golf experts also brings all kinds of economic, health and community benefits for the surrounding areas. “There is no other course in golf development in the region that is as accessible to everyone, so it is great to be able to offer it in Chesterfield. Getting this qualification will give anyone wanting a career in sport a real advantage when it comes to securing a successful career.” To find out more, visit www. chesterfield.ac.uk/diplomain-golf or email Adam Milner at milnera@chesterfield.ac.uk
“Modern equipment has revolutionised the way elite golfers play the game, and the level of challenge at Tewkesbury Park for the better golfer was one thing which we needed

Edwalton GC’s future secured by Glendale Golf A popular golf centre at the heart of one of England’s largest cities has had its future secured until at least 2025. Customers and staff at Edwalton Golf Centre, on the south eastern outskirts of Nottingham, are celebrating this week after Glendale Golf announced that it has signed a contract to manage the venue on behalf of Rushcliffe Borough Council for a further nine years. Glendale Golf, one of the UK’s leading golf club operators, has also committed to an investment programme which will see a wide range of facilities at Edwalton GC upgraded over the next twelve months. “This is fantastic news for the community” said Simon Robinson, Deputy Leader of Rushcliffe Borough Council. “It removes any uncertainty about Edwalton Golf Centre’s future, and we can all now look forward to enjoying this valuable local leisure hotspot for many years to come. “We recognise and appreciate that Glendale Golf has shown great trust and faith not only in the golf centre, but also in the local area and its residents. We look forward to working closely with them in the future.” Glendale Golf has been running Edwalton GC since 2002. It recently appointed a new management team at the centre, which is on Wellin Lane close to the A52 ring road between Edwalton and Tollerton. Tom Brooke, Managing Director of Glendale Golf, said: “We are happy to make this emphatic commitment to the future of one of the country’s leading public golf centres. I know that this will be welcome news to the thousands of people in the Rushcliffe borough and beyond who embrace Edwalton Golf Centre in their lives year in, year out. It is right at the heart of the local
community, and as well as providing a vibrant, affordable pay-and-play golf experience, our recent addition of FootGolf has also made it a great place for all kinds of families to enjoy their leisure time here, whether they are golfers or not. “Recent visitors to Edwalton GC will have seen that our programme of improvements is well underway. Today’s announcement is an important milestone in the history of a much-loved local facility, and we will continue to drive quality standards here ever higher.” The practice range at Edwalton GC has already been upgraded with a smart new look, and newly-appointed Centre Manager Simon Williams and his team are actively implementing other refurbishment plans, particularly in the bar, restaurant and function areas. “Generations of local golfers have learnt to play the game here at Edwalton” he said, “and we are massively excited for the future. There’s nowhere better than Edwalton for beginners to learn golf, for miles around.” Rushcliffe Borough Council’s John Cottee, who as Cabinet Member for Communities heads the council’s sports and leisure team, said: “Glendale Golf’s staff at Edwalton Golf Centre have brought huge amounts of young people into sport over recent years, and we urge all residents to come and try this high quality local sports facility in even greater numbers over the next year. “The borough of Rushcliffe offers great sport, great lifestyle and a great place to live, and it is fantastic to have Edwalton’s place at the heart of the area secured until well into the next decade.” Edwalton Golf Centre boasts Nottinghamshire’s longest main 9 Hole golf course, plus an attractive 9 Hole Par 3 course, a 9 hole FootGolf course, a golf clinic, a golf retail store and a large putting green – all open to the public. A generously large patio area and refreshment facilities also make it the perfect place to just drop in for a coffee and relax. “Edwalton Golf Centre now represents a long-term opportunity for Glendale Golf to grow the sport in the Nottingham area and beyond” said Tom Brooke. “We are thrilled to be able to look into the future with such confidence.” Contact Edwalton Golf Centre on 0115 923 4775, or visit www.glendalegolf.co.uk/ Edwalton-Golf-Centre

SkyTrak launch monitor and golf
0%
simulator now offering finance deal
HADDENHAM, BUCKS, UK – It already connects wirelessly to your PC or tablet, and now the award-winning SkyTrak also connects seamlessly to your bank account, with the announcement of a new 0% interest-free finance deal.
At just £1,795 SkyTrak is already relatively inexpensive compared to its rivals after effectively inventing a new golf product category – pro-quality personal launch monitors and golf simulators at consumer prices. Golfers can now buy SkyTrak for just over £200 down after passing a credit check, followed by 12 months of low-cost monthly payments. “With SkyTrak we have shown how buying an accurate golf launch monitor needn’t cost you as much as a new car!” said James Holmes, UK and European Sales Manager at SkyCaddie. “Now, with this new finance deal, we’ve made it even easier to invest in a SkyTrak for yourself, which means playing real golf in controlled conditions, and seeing the benefit in your handicap. “With the assistance of their PGA pro, golfers will see their handicap tumble when they put SkyTrak through its paces” continued Holmes. “Work on your game, or use SkyTrak to test your next set of golf clubs, or just use it for entertainment. With a host of golf simulator add-ons now available, you can use your SkyTrak to play over 90,000 golf courses! “SkyTrak is perfect at a golf club if it wants to organise sociable indoor golf events at any time of year especially through the autumn/winter when the nights draw in, or in rainy periods. SkyTrak’s ‘Nearest The Pin’ contests are proving especially popular, for example - everybody understands how those work, they encourage audience participation, and offer instant gratification. “Why not invite your friends around to your house to play full-on simulator golf with SkyTrak? All you need in addition are a hitting mat and a practice net..” SkyTrak is a joint venture between the Ridgeland, Mississippi-based SkyGolf (also known for SkyCaddie GPS and the SkyPro personal golf swing analyser), and North Carolina-based SportTrak, a company which provides entertaining digital technology solutions to avid sports enthusiasts. “SkyTrak gives golfers world-class technical quality, a powerful set of game-improvement tools, and an astonishing golf entertainment system in an all-in-one package, at a fraction of the price you previously expected to pay” said Holmes. “Our new 0% finance deal should mean that many more golfers will find they can now afford to buy a SkyTrak for themselves, thus equipping themselves with a highly advanced and accurate launch monitor and golf simulator with access to the world’s best, most spectacular and most playable golf course software.”
