HOPE SPRINGS ETERNAL ON THE GOLF COURSE
The 82nd Masters in Georgia proved a very exciting game to watch for me personally and produced moments of scintillating golf and absolute horror as I can equate with all those things and some in between. The cut and thrust of golfers catching up a bit and then falling behind showed how golf can bring joy and despair all in one round. For Jordan Spleith to start the day no shots behind only to lose out on the last hole with a bogey was cruel. But, which one of us hasn’t hit a tree occasionally when fighting for a million and a half pounds prize money and a free jacket?! All in all a great few days of golf but one Sergio Garcia will want to forget, running up the biggest score on a hole in Masters history and yet I thought “I would have been proud of most of his shots”. Most courses I visit have a hole where I think “I got a par here last time so I can improve with a little more accuracy”. That’s what Sergio must have thought because he shot an Eagle this hole last year. Golf eh? The courses this year have, so far, been what can only be described as a bit wet. Trying to get a sunny photograph has been a bit hard to say the least. But on the plus side we played Ashbourne golf club at the end of last year on a sunny day and we are pleased

A Course for All Seasons Bulwell Forest Golf Club
W
hat a winter we have had it just does not want to go away, never mind using a golf buggy on the course, a boat would have been more appropriate to get around! There is only a hand full of local courses that can take such a battering from the awful weather we’ve had, and one of these is Bulwell Forest, built on sand stone this course drains really well and thank goodness for that because at the time of writing this I still had not swung a club in 2018! www.countygolfer.co.uk 7
8 www.countygolfer.co.uk
Let’s get to the point, this course is a lot better than you may first imagine, on first impressions you might think it’s not in the best position against a ring road and a large housing-estate, but you would be wrong to think that because this is the original Nottingham Club and I just love the layout. You have some majestic tee shots and some cracking par 3s to test the very best golfer, theses vary from 93yards to 200 yards. The Club house benefitted from a refurbishment a few years ago, and they serve a good breakfast and nice pint too. The pro shop will keep you stocked up on balls, chocolate bars and water. This is a very friendly club and relaxed, just the type of course to invite your mates to, especially those that haven’t played in a while. So instead of a hole by hole review, I’ll introduce you to some that I think you’ll enjoy. You will find there is no par 5 on the front for men and just one for the ladies. The first few holes 1-3, are the ones to help you get warmed up, they’re quite forgiving and you stand a good chance of getting a par on at least one of these. Hole 4 is 255 yards and a par 4. Even though it’s stoke index 16, if you have a slight slice or draw from your tee shot it will leave you a lot to do. Why? Because down the right is out of bounds and down the left are dense trees. To make this a little bit more difficult there are a couple of trees in about 100 yards blocking your straight shot to the green, forcing you to go left.
www.countygolfer.co.uk 9
10 www.countygolfer.co.uk
Put it this way – I walked off with a 7 and Newby a 5 – it could have been a lot worse. Moving on to hole 7, this is a very short par 3, 93 yards uphill. Directly behind the back of the green is a large netting to stop you hitting it onto the road. I always struggle with really short holes, I’m either hitting it way too far or way too short! Newby opted for a 9 iron and a gentle swing which looked like it hit the green. I opted for the same and it looked like mine did also. When we got up there Newby had managed to find a hole in the net! I managed just to cling on and a gentle tap with the sand wedge left me an easy putt for a par. Basically a pitching wedge would suffice. This is the start of 2 of my favourite holes, the 8th a 325 par 4, this is what I call a driving hole. An elevated tee looking down onto a sweeping fairway which goes to the right. For you right handers it should be an easy shot, but for us ‘lefty’s’ with a bit of a slice it could end up on the next fairway. In true Lefty style this is exactly what I did. I had to play my second shot from the 12th fairway. The green on the eighth is massive, so fortunately for me my second shot landed on the green but still left me a 40-foot putt. Now we start to climb back up – the 9th, 311 yards par 4 / index 2. Don’t get caught out on this hole like I did, it’s all about your second shot. It looks, from standing on the fairway, that the green is closer than it is, when in fact it is a lot further back, on a hill. So, do not under club! If I had known this I probably would have got a par. The back 9 really vary from hole to hole. A good example of this is the 10th, which is a blind uphill tee shot with your second shot having to go over a big dip and hit an elevated green. You have to be accurate and hit it with a lot of power. Not many will walk away with a par on this one. As you get to the 15th the course opens up again giving you the opportunity to hit big long drives which are very enjoyable to play. The 17th is another cracking par 3, it’s a good old way at 200 yards again so you need to crank up the power. The course finishes with a gentle par 4 winding its way back to the club house. www.countygolfer.co.uk 11
Over all I like Bulwell Forest, it’s a course I could quite happily play every week, the green keepers do a cracking job of keeping it in great condition despite the locals (some of whom don’t seem to appreciate what a lovely oasis of green this is!) in fact when you play here you get the sense that this is like the start of Hollinwell in some places. If you were looking to become a member of a club then you’re going to be hard set to find a friendlier place and this course offers real value for money.

Wi th th e masters finish ed and th e forecast for some dry weath er, th e golf season is now upon us . . . finally.
I
must report that my sister Janine, who I have mentioned in some articles before, sadly passed away in January. Aged 40 she had been fighting breast cancer for eight years. She was a truly tremendous and inspirational person who as a family we miss so much. With a loss so close, you have two choices, either sit in a corner and crumble, or you take life and live it. Life is so short , it’s not a dress rehearsal, so if there is something you want to do, see, achieve, go and do it. We will make Janine’s legacy live on. This November we are holding a ball in her honour, it’s a sell out with 500 tickets sold. On the note on living life, I have always wanted to go to the Ryder Cup, so this September I shall be there to support Team Europe in Paris.
Playing season.
The wet weather has been unbelievable and so many courses have been closed. I really hope we can have a string of dry months and that you all can get your value out of your memberships. My season was due to start last week but the first Derbyshire Alliance was cancelled, so my first event will be the Cornish festival starting next week. It’s a three day event , playing at St Enodoc , Trevose , and Carlyon bay. It’s always exciting starting the competitive season and I can’t lie because I always feel a little nervous. Having a scorecard in your pocket is always different from just playing social golf. My experience has told me it’s important not to get too technical early on, as it’s all about scoring.
After the Cornish festival, I will have a run of four weeks of Pro ams and qualifiers for national PGA events. I have worked really hard in the gym the past 6 months. In November I joined CrossFit Deviant based in Derby. It’s a combination of gymnastics, weightlifting and cardio. I thought I was quite fit until I saw some of the athletes down there. I’m slowly getting there and I’m loving the challenge of all the movements. Just basic skipping was hard at the start but you soon remember what to do. This winter saw me set up a winter coaching programme, I limited it to 10 spaces and these were quickly taken. It gave me and the student a clear picture and instead of it being a quick fix, it was more long term and I’ve had some great results for players. www.countygolfer.co.uk 15
East Midlands Golf Academy Repair Cen tre. This month saw EMGA launch our repair centre. Mainly focusing on re gripping, we shall be offering a wide range of grips at competitive prices within first class service.
Season opening tips. To get your season off to the right start , here are 5 tips to help you improve. Until the courses fully recover , you can get quite a lot of bad lies around the green. Instead of using your irons to chip with, try your rescue wood, and just putt with it. This will help get the ball up a little and give you a nice bit of run.
16 www.countygolfer.co.uk
Tee your driver a little higher. I see too many amateurs with a low tee peg, and with the size of the driver head increasing, I feel it’s really important to have a high tee.
Club up.
I’ve done a lot of yardage’s with my players this winter and it amazes me how far off a lot of people are . The majority think they hit the ball further. Next time you go out , take a club to get you to the back of the green and see how you get on. With a winter of gimmies, get on the putting green and practice holing those two foot putts because in the first medal of the year they will seem quite a bit longer.
Book a lesson.
If you are someone that never has lessons, but struggles around their handicap. Go and see your local PGA Pro, either have a session on the range or even have a 9 hole playing lesson. Let them help you with your course strategy , short game and club selections.
Morley Hayes
A year into the membership at Morley Hayes, and we have introduced an unlimited option. If you are looking at a club to play at where there are no winter greens or tees, look no further than Morley Hayes. The driving range has been refurbished and a new cafe area added. I can truly say it’s fantastic and compliments the already fantastic facilities that Morley Hayes has to offer. Hot food will be served and it will be a great place to hit balls, meet friends and socialise. By the end of the year , new bays will be added and a large teaching bay will be ready to use. This will give me the space to offer custom fit and be able to offer our ever extending client base the option to purchase clubs from us.
Major predictions With Patrick Reed taking the masters, we have three majors left. I actually don’t think I’ve predicted a winner yet in this magazine, so here goes another year of predictions.
US Open: Jordan Speith The Open: Tiger Woods US PGA: Rickie Fowler May I take the opportunity to wish you all a great golfing season , enjoy the sun when it makes an appearance and most of all keep smiling.

Tranquillity …AT LAST!
Ashbourne GOLF CLUB
When I think of Ashbourne and sport, the first thing I think of is Shrovetide Football, what a sport!! 2 teams consisting of hundreds of players fighting over a ball, running, kicking and many scrums. When someone scores a goal, they’re lifted high up on the shoulder of one of his team mates and carried around to applause! It’s generally chaos! 18 www.countygolfer.co.uk
www.countygolfer.co.uk 19
20 www.countygolfer.co.uk
In complete contrast, up on the hill, high above the village sitting in tranquillity, is Ashbourne Golf Course, where it’s anything but chaos! A place where you’ll see no fighting, running, kicking or scrums, and only rarely will anyone be paraded around on someone’s shoulders (this is usually after a hole-in-one, or a particularly good committee meeting!) For me, it’s the tranquillity that draws me to a round of golf. Just a couple of good friends, the open fairways and peace and quiet. Away from work, away from the troubles of life! And being a fair-weather player too, our trip to Ashbourne Golf Course on one of the best days of the year so far was something to truly look forward to! The first thing you notice about the course is the location (Sounds obvious I know!). It sits high up
above the village and looks out over some of the best views you’re ever going to see, stretching far out into the Peak District. On a clear, sunny day it’s truly breath-taking! The course eases you in gently with the first few holes being pretty flat, a big dogleg left on the first hole is a bit tough to judge if its your first time at Ashbourne. It’s a little bit of a “hit and hope” hole unless you’ve played before. As you turn onto the 3rd hole the course begins to reveal its true colours. A long par 3, lined with trees and with a big right-to-left sloping fairway, that also falls away down to the smallish green. It’s a tough hole that easily has the potential to ruin your card before you’ve even got going. Sadly there really isn’t a safe way to play the hole, it’s green or bust from the tee!
www.countygolfer.co.uk 21
22 www.countygolfer.co.uk
This hole sets the tone, as you start playing your way up and down the fairways, each hole either rising or falling in front of you. Personally I’m a big fan of courses like this, I get a little bored if the course is flat. The extra challenge at Ashbourne of judging the length of your shot really adds to the challenge of playing there, whether an amateur or professional. Deciding whether a 100 yard shot is sand wedge or an 8 iron depending on if you’re facing the Eiger or the precipice! And this course has those sorts of shots in abundance (although without a buggy I might not be quite as enthusiastic!). The 6th hole is a great example of this, a 152 yard par 3 steeply up hill, with the green sloping steeply towards you. There’s a big bank at the back of the green to catch anything too big like mine, but two putting from above the hole is a huge challenge. Landing below the hole is ideal, but incredibly tough to do.
The 10th hole may lead you to think “the front 9 were hilly, I’m glad its flattening out now”! Don’t be fooled, the 11th is right back in the vein of the first 9. The fairway slopes down and steeply to the right. Land on the hill on the right and you’re in trouble and go right and it’s out of bounds. The only option is to land on the fairway, but with that sloping strongly to the right, you’re not guaranteed to be safe either. My favourite hole on the course has to be the 12th. A long iron downhill (no surprise there!) will leave you laying up before a large pond, you flirt with danger as you see how close you dare get. The closer you are the easier the next shot. Then you have another iron over the water, up the hill (again no surprise) onto the green. It’s not the hardest hole to play, but it’s a great challenge and a fantastic hole.
www.countygolfer.co.uk 23
After playing your way through the hills, the last few holes are back on the flat as your work your way back to the club house, with a fantastic closing hole. A dogleg right from the tee leaves the decision as to how greedy you’re going to be. I suppose this depends on your card really, protect your score or go for the big finish. Your second is approaching the green with water and the club house to your left. So a good finish is a must especially on a sunny day when the
24 www.countygolfer.co.uk
members are outside enjoying the sun watching you return home. Without the buggy I reckon I’d have felt as if I’d played in the Shrovetide match, but as it was we had a fantastic round. The green’s rolled beautifully, the fairways were all in fantastic condition. You may not be able to guarantee the weather, but this course will never let you down. On a clear, sunny day, it really is a fantastic place to play. Newby

View behind green on signature 9th hole Barlborough Links Golf Course
FAME TATE
New Year, New Start. 2018 for me has already brought big changes and we are only in April. In February I resigned from Tapton Park Golf Course and moved to Barlborough Links Golf Course to work alongside Andy Carnall. It is quite ironic how things turn out and go full circle. I first met Andy when I joined Chesterfield Golf Club in 1991 when he was working as an assistant professional. He then employed me at Tapton Park in 2012 to increase female participation and I am absolutely thrilled that we are now back working together and excited about what the future holds.
View behind 7th green
View behind 4th green Barlborough Links Golf Club was taken over by Barlborough Links Golf & Leisure Ltd in June 2016. The course was run down but the Head Professional and Director, Andy Carnall, saw potential in the layout of the course and how it could become a good quality 9-hole course for players of all standards.
The course has nine full length golf holes totalling over 3,000 yards and was built in the late 1990’s with greens of USGA Specification. The layout of the course is friendly but with a few challenging holes to test even the best players.
Looking down 5th fairway
Under the new ownership, the course is rapidly improving and whilst aimed at the pay and play market, the club offers various membership categories from Affiliate Membership at £10 for 5 years to Full 7 day unlimited use membership at just £400 per year. The golf course appeals to golfers of all age, but particularly suits those who want to continue to play golf but are short on time (maximum 2 hours for 9-holes) and those who may be in their twilight years who simply find 18-holes too much. Alongside the 9-hole course, the club has an 11 bay floodlit, covered driving range, practice putting green and chipping area, 9-hole FootGolf course and small coffee shop/reception - more information on our website www.barlboroughlinksgolfclub.co.uk. For Andy and myself, developing golfers is of high priority and the club offers free coaching evenings, improver and advanced group coaching sessions, plus grant funded group coaching sessions. I am still continuing my work with Derbyshire Golf as a community golf coach, offering group coaching sessions for beginners to grow the game and making golf accessible for all, thanks to funding from Sport England; Derbyshire Golf Project, Chesterfield and NE Derbyshire. These sessions are open to businesses, colleges, social clubs, sports clubs etc within the area, with the aim of giving groups the chance to have a go at golf for FREE. Our Tuesday night mixed beginners group is already proving to be a great success and it is fantastic to see a full driving range, everyone having fun and learning new skills.
As you all know, developing junior and ladies golf is a huge passion of mine and for me it is all about growing the game. I have started to offer girls only junior coaching at 9.30am and mixed junior sessions at 11.00am on a Saturday morning, where juniors are encouraged to develop their talent to whatever level they aspire, in a fun, friendly, welcoming atmosphere. In addition to the junior coaching, I offer ladies only coaching, coffee and cake mornings every Thursday 10.00-12.00. These sessions are a fantastic opportunity to develop skills on the range and on the course, learning alongside ladies of a similar ability, with the added advantage of delicious cake and coffee. As the weather starts to improve, there will be more sessions available to both juniors and ladies. I have also taken the lead on our “Schools Golf Development Programme” and am already working in 3 local schools to develop new young golfers into our great game. With 9-holes costing as little as £8, and unlimited golf memberships from £300 with easy payment options, why not pop down to meet Andy and his team of friendly staff and enjoy a round. On a more personal note, I would like to thank everyone who has continued to support me over the last few months and followed me to Barlborough. For more enquiries about coaching/playing opportunities, contact Fran on: 01246 813111 or Fame on: 07500931759 You can follow us Facebook and Twitter.

hen the invite came from Karl Adams to play at Radcliffe on Trent Golf Club we quickly packed our bags. If, like us, you’ve been heartily sick of the rain then you can bet your life the golf clubs are too. They have had a tough time with closures for waterlogging but, on the upside, the sun has started to shine, albeit haphazardly, and summer is beckoning, (or so we thought). 34 www.countygolfer.co.uk

Entering the Pro Sop we had a warm welcome from Claire who has been at the club for 15 years now. We were kitted out with scorecards, water and the customary chocolate bar to replenish lost energy. The sky was looking ominously dark as we eagerly set off.
As there was a two ball waiting to tee off after us we did the gentlemanly thing and let them through. That lull should have allowed us time to take a breather and capitalize on our good drives. I did get to walk over the bridge though and was happy to see my ball on the fairway.
All three of us got off well at the first with high hopes of beating the Bulwell Forest scores. As I didn’t play there I was on a winner, anything under 100 and the honours were mine.
My second shot was not long enough as I under clubbed leaving me short and having to decide which club to use to get onto the green. I needn’t have bothered because again I fell short.
Lefty took the Tiger line over the trees and declared that “he had deliberately left it short of the ditch”. He’s full of rubbish like that. I say that with confidence because he lost his ball on the next shot. Then I looked for the camera to take a photograph and realized I’d left it on the floor outside the clubhouse, so off Lefty drove at speed to get it.
I’ve realized, the more I think about the shot the worse I hit the ball. But I was pleased to come off with a 5. Newby went off to the left and into the trees and then had to get back to the green and came off with a six. Three perfectly achievable pars ruined. That’s golf for you.
www.countygolfer.co.uk 37
The second hole affords a gently sloping downhill shot. We all felt that the bunkers were incredibly well placed to catch the mid handicapper. It’s a dog-leg right. Watch out for the right bunker as it’s a beast to get out of. I thankfully landed my third shot short and managed to chip within three yards of the hole. I needed a miracle to avoid a 6 but I didn’t get one. Two putts and I came off with a six. The greens were playing magnificently and pretty quick. It’s a struggle to get used to them after a winter of soggy greens. Your game has to change. On the Third, a dog-leg right, Lefty parred it. A great tee shot that was long and true just bisected the fairway giving him a super approach shot to the green with a 9 iron, and two putts saw him dancing with joy. He should have birdied this one after such a good start.
38 www.countygolfer.co.uk
The 4th. This is a long par 4 at 437 yards and Newby got the second of his three pars. At stroke index 3 this is a tough hole and I scraped a five, which was hugely disappointing . I’d read up on the holes on the web site and it said this about this long par 4, “Don’t go left, trees await” I should have listened! The 5th hole. I really don’t want to write about this one. I’m sure it’s a good hole. Aren’t the trees nice at this time of year? 6th. Newby thought he had nailed it but the green narrowed alarmingly and his shot went slightly left which left him a nasty downhill chip from out of the rough. The chip didn’t go as planned and the ball refused to get up to the green in sufficient distance to get another par. Lefty went into the bunker. In fact I’m sure he was the only player to do so which is unusual because we all catch one normally.
By the 7th hole the rain had decided to get a bit heavier and to be honest it spoilt what was a most enjoyable round so far, but we have to bear with that in England, it makes the game even more difficult but hones your skills. The greens slowed a little at this point but I found that my putting was getting better as I could punch them a little harder to get up close and even into the hole. Before we played the 8th we were caught up by a couple of friendly local lads (pictured) who were as wet as us. The 8th is 192 yard par 3. The bunkers are not as near the green as you think. You need a good 170 yard carry just to get past the middle bunker. I landed a yard short leaving me to pitch onto the green. I scuffed it and ruined my chance of a wet birdie. Newby took a 5 iron and wellied it but only made the front of the green. Lefty went into the left bunker and said he did a 4. We are convinced that his score converter is rigged similar to the euro against the pound and at the minute his currency is
strong against the par. The 9th. We were quite soaked by now and the shots were not impressive as I ended in the rough on the right and seemed to stay there for the next three shots feeling soaking wet. Just in the distance we could see the clubhouse and a pint of Speckled Hen was calling out to me, so we decided that we would follow the procession to the clubhouse and come back to fight the back nine another day. The greens really held up well to say that the rain came down pretty heavy and the course was still good underfoot. A real treat to play. While we were ordering drinks and perusing the menu Phil, complete in cooking gear, said that the steak pies were good. To prove the point may I direct you to the picture of the magnificent steak pie, presented to us elegantly by Louise, which we devoured along with chips and peas. Our efforts were so appreciated by the members that one came across to congratulated us for finishing it. We were convinced it was a ‘pie for four’ but nevertheless in true Desparate Dan style and not wanting to appear rude we ate it all.

Phil and Louise really looked after us well in the clubhouse and we appreciated the time they gave us even though they were obviously busy. Our thanks to all at Radcliffe on Trent GC for a super day. We intend to come back on a sunny summers day to play the back nine and have another super steak pie. PS: Just to clarify things, we were playing off yellows. In fact the yellows are only 174 yards shorter than the white. ‘We should play off whites I said, but no one listened. Not that I would play any better, but I like the elongated views of holes.

Switzerland’s oldest golf club, Engadine Golf Club, Celebrates 125th Anniversary in 2018 Switzerland’s oldest golf club, the Engadine Golf Club, established in 1893 and located in the picturesque Engadine Valley, will this year celebrate its 125th anniversary with a number of commemorative golf events whilst also looking back on its rich, eventful history. The Engadine Golf Club not only has a fascinating story to tell but the fact that the golf club is home to two separate, very different golf courses located a mile apart and run by a single organisation, Golf Engadin St. Moritz (www.engadin-golf.ch), sets it apart from most traditional golf clubs. The 125-year-old Samedan course is an ancient, linksstyle parkland layout that runs along the flat valley floor, meandering through streams and characterized by broad fairways flanked by giant larch trees whilst its younger sister course at Zuoz-Madulain, opened in 2003, offers challenging elevation changes, undulating fairways fringed by meadow flowers and receptive greens as it weaves its way along the side of the mountain and between the pine forests. Situated on some of the highest terrain in the country and within a UNESCO World Heritage site, both Samedan and Zuoz offer stunning views of the towering Alpine mountains beyond and many of the charming villages of the Engadine Valley. To mark the 125th milestone and ensure an unforgettable year for the club, Golf Engadin St Moritz is hosting a series of golf events over the summer as well as staging two exhibitions to showcase the unique history of the club. Preparations for the anniversary began in 2016. 125 sapling larch trees were planted on the Samedan and Zuoz courses. With some of the existing larch trees even older than Samedan, 125 club members sponsored the planting of a single larch each to guarantee the future of both courses and their characteristic larch populations. This sustainability project will be recognised at the Anniversary Tournament on August 1 50 www.countygolfer.co.uk
when Mixed Foursomes will be played, just as it would have been some 125 years ago. An Anniversary Dinner will then take place that evening at the famous Badrutt’s Palace Hotel in St. Moritz. However the first event to launch the summer celebrations will take place on June 6 when the club’s partners, local dignitaries, hotels and nearby golf clubs will be welcomed to the Samedan clubhouse for a look behind the scenes at Engadine Golf and to view an exhibition of over 20 posters located around the Samedan golf complex depicting the club’s history. This will be followed by the St Moritz Gold Cup in July, the Swiss Senior Amateur Championship the week after that and the three-day Golfers Choice Engadin ProAm over both golf courses in August. The Engadine Golf Club will also be the theme of an exhibition at the Design Gallery St Moritz from June to December. Along the famous giant escalator from Lake St Moritz up to Badrutt’s Palace, 31 posters will portray the times gone by at the club as well as the development of golf in the Engadine. Finally a 20-year-old single malt whisky by Glentauchers in just 246 numbered bottles, 125 of which come with a matching decanter designed by Robert Niederer, has also been produced to mark the jubilee. This being a nod to the fact that at the end of the 19th and start of the 20th century, sandwiches were washed with whisky for breakfast at Samedan!

DERBYSHIRE GOLF DEVELOPMENT GROUP CONTINUE THEIR DRIVE TO GROW THE GAME The Derbyshire Golf Development Group are continuing their Drive to Grow the Game by funding GET INTO GOLF programmes across the county. The GET INTO GOLF initiative will aim to encourage more people into the sport in Derbyshire through a series of projects tailored to introduce new golfers to the game and support them to become Golf Ready. The programmes will be funded by monies from the partner bodies (formerly DUGC & DLCGA) of the newly formed Derbyshire County Golf Ltd and aims to deliver 20 projects across the county. The funding will be used to raise the profile of golf out in the local community with an aim to encourage people to take up the sport and hopefully become golf club members. Nigel Furniss, Development Officer for the Derbyshire Golf Development Group , said: “The DGDG are committed to running initiatives that grow the base of new golfers coming into the game. It is really encouraging to receive this support from DCGLtd, it will allow us to take golf into the community and work in partnership together with clubs and facilities to try and develop the game of golf.
“All clubs are currently facing the challenge of recruiting and retaining members, the Derbyshire Golf Development Group has recognised the potential of working with clubs and golf coaches to grow the sport in the community and at the club. “Our target now is to introduce 160 new people to golf over the next few months and hopefully excite them to want to continue in the game and consider joining a club, but more importantly become a lifelong participant in a sport which brings so many health and social benefits.” Get into Golf is a national campaign to inspire adults and young people to take up the game and is run by the England Golf through its network of County Golf Development Groups, supported by Sport England and National Lottery funding. Get into golf opportunities include taster sessions and lowcost beginner courses with PGA professionals. They are a fun and sociable way to start golf – and a great way to make new friends. To register to take part in one of these GET INTO GOLF programmes please send your interest either via the Derbyshire Golf website www.derbyshiregolf.org or Email Derbyshire Golf Development Officer Nigel Furniss nigel.furniss@derbyshiregolf.org www.countygolfer.co.uk 53
