Golfer

Spring 2019

Welcome to the Spring edition of County Golfer.

So

Tiger Woods is back to his winning ways. I wish I was, but as the sun gets stronger, the days get longer and the rounds get more frequent I hope to start to emulate his form in my own little way. Consistency is the biggest problem for many of us especially off the tee where wild drives cost many a shot. I noticed in James Whatley's article which appears later in this edition, he extols the virtue of using irons off the tee. I started doing this last year and know that it saved me a few shots per round just by being a bit more accurate. True, I haven't been driving as far but at least I'm on my own fairway and not trespassing somewhere else with a shot trying to get back over the trees. This became apparent whilst playing Radcliffe on Trent GC where a wayward shot will cost dearly. Whilst many seem to be able to hit high over the trees I seem to go through them (or try to).

There are changes afoot at many golf clubs around the counties with some being taken over. Stanedge , for instance is now under Fame Tates ownership and we wish her every success there. Nestled high up in Derbyshire it has an idyllic setting and has tremendous potential under Fames direction. Lefty and Newby decided to try the delights of Tewksbury, whilst I had a short trip to Ireland to spy out the golf clubs over there. I came across a green and pleasant land featuring some fine golf clubs. Meanwhile here in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire we sport some of the finest courses that we could wish for. Let's get out and play them.

Happy golfing

RADCLIFFE-ON-TRENT

110 YEARS at Radcliffe-on-Trent Golf Club

R

adcliffe-on-Trent Golf Club is set in an idyllic position affording outstanding views over the Vale of Belvoir with the castle itself on the horizon. Originally designed as a nine-hole course by Tom Williamson, a local golf professional of great repute and designer of over 60 golf courses in the UK and abroad, the course is one of the premier golf courses in Nottinghamshire.

6 www.countygolfer.co.uk

A RICH HISTORY The course has a rich history boasting not only royal visitors but also top class golfers who have sampled its delights. In 1903 several sportsmen applied to Lord Manvers, the local land owner, and he provided them with around 40 acres of land, on lease, at very favourable terms. Consequently, the Manvers Coat of Arms was adopted by the Club on its formation in 1909. Tom Williamson and Harry (Vardon Grip) Vardon participated in the opening exhibition match played on the 9th

October 1909 which attracted a crowd of almost two hundred people. The land was subsequently purchased in February 1920, followed by a further 50 acres in 1924, allowing for the construction of another 9 holes. The new 18-hole course was formally opened in June 1925 with an exhibition match between Harry Vardon and Tom Williamson against C. A. Whitcombe and the Club Professional, George Carlin, finishing “all square. In 1966 more land was acquired by the side of Dewberry Lane but, unfortunately, the Club lost their clubhouse and 21

acres of land in 1972 following the County Council’s decision to reroute and widen the A52. However an exchange of land was arranged and 30 acres were gained. Frank Pennick, the Golf Course Architect, was commissioned to relay the course and he created a number of new holes whilst the present clubhouse was built, eventually opening on the 17th July 1972. Since that time the Club has planted hundreds of trees on the course and continues that policy to this day. In 1982 the Club held a Junior Open Tournament which became the prestigious McGregor Trophy. The tournament affords aspiring young golfers their first opportunity to experience the thrill of playing a 72 hole competition. Many former competitors have gone on to achieve recognition as top international players within both amateur and professional ranks, including Lee Westwood, Justin Rose, Graeme Storm and Eoardo Molinari. In 1993 the McGregor was adopted by the English Golf Union and is now known as the English Boys

8 www.countygolfer.co.uk

Under 16 Open Championship and recognised to be the leading stroke play event for players under the age of sixteen. In 1998 the EGU agreed to rotate the competition around the country in line with all other major competitions. Consequently, the event was last held at Radcliffe in its Centenary year 2009, and again in 2014, but is delighted that it will return again in 2019. HOW IT IS TODAY Playing the course today (6402 yards Par 70) is as challenging as it has always been and is one of the best and hardest parkland courses within the region, giving a true test of golf for all levels of play. County Golfer has played here a few times over the years and found it a most challenging course. Some areas are quite tight and accuracy is at a premium but at other times you get the chance to go for it big style but, beware the trees will snaffle you up if you are wayward. The course information says “Holes 16, 17(signature hole) and 18 will make any golfer, of any level, concentrate

especially on a Medal round”! We would heartily agree with that because it’s at this point, when you are tiring after 15 holes, that this course will bite you in the bum! and we know it! Membership is currently on offer and the Bronze deal looks a winner to us. BRONZE membership allows you the freedom to decide when to play and know how much it will cost. It offers great value for money and the chance to join a thriving club with full practice facilities including a driving range. You choose to play at either peak or off-peak times and pay accordingly. The charge will range from 10 credits during off-peak and 27 credits at peak time or in competitions. Worth a look we feel. Whether you have a good or bad round the club’s famous steak and ale pie is a real treat.

TEWKESBURY PARK

T

he 93-room luxury hotel, spa and golf course won Best UK & Ireland Hotel for Weddings, Parties or Special Occasions in the awards ceremony, which took place on 5th November 2018 at The Mayfair Hotel in central London. The luxury hotel, spa and golf course at Tewkesbury Park now offers the complete golf break with outstanding accommodation and some of the finest playing surfaces in the west of England. Golfers looking for the ultimate luxury golf break now have six brand-new historic suites to choose from, each offering five-star levels of opulence, detail and traditional quality rarely found in English golf hotels. Three other individuallydesigned ‘Indulgence’ rooms can also be found in the 18th Century manor house, and the remainder of Tewkesbury Park’s bedrooms now offer a minimum of four-star style, comfort and interiors. Tewkesbury Park’s 6,579 yard Par 72, 18-hole golf course –designed by highly-acclaimed golf architect Frank Pennink, whose Vilamoura Old Course in Portugal is among the most revered in the Algarve – recently completed a

major bunker refurbishment program. Golfers will also find a reconditioned golf course maintained by a fleet of new greenkeeping machinery, plus a new golf shop, and new locker rooms. To soothe your muscles before or after golf, the hotel’s indoor pool, sauna, steam room and outdoor hot tub have all been refurbished. Two new spa treatment rooms now feature fresh treatments using the locally-sourced, naturally-inspired and chemical-free Natural Spa Factory products. In addition, the hotel’s newly-equipped Gym will keep you in trim. Located just five minutes from Junction 9 of the M5 motorway, and only an hour from Birmingham or Bristol, Tewkesbury Park’s commanding hilltop position means you’re guaranteed breathtaking views of the Cotswolds and the nearby towns of Tewkesbury and Cheltenham, with the beautiful Malvern Hills also visible in the distance.

www.countygolfer.co.uk 15

TEWKESBURY PARK It's that time of year again when the County Golfer team head out of our area to find you the reader somewhere new to play and stay, and for some time we had been hearing rumbles along the golf chatter line about a place called Tewkesbury Park in Gloucestershire having won awards in November 2018 for Best UK & Ireland Hotel for weddings, parties or special occasions, also the CondĂŠ Nast Johansens award for Excellence 2019.

BELOW: The par3 5th hole, playing over water with Tewkesbury Abbey in the distance.

Since Tewkesbury Park not only has a golf course but an indoor pool, sauna, steam room and outdoor hot tub with two spa treatment rooms, we decided this would be a good trip for the golfer and non golfer in your life, so with that in mind, this makes the ideal place to get away to for a nice weekend with a treat for everyone. In our case, Newby and myself (Lefty), this was perfect as our wifes

16 www.countygolfer.co.uk

don’t play golf and would not usually come away on a golf trip. This also suited me fine as sharing a room with the Yorkshire Terrier last year drove me to the edge, as he is a snorer! My wife and I were booked into one of the Opulent Historic Suites which are in the original part of the manor house, called the King Edward IV. It over looks the 18th green and has far reaching views across the Cotswolds. The bed was a super king Hypnos bed which as you would imagine gave us a pleasant nights sleep. There was free Wi-Fi, and a very nice 48 inch smart TV, and the room also had a seating area which was pleasantly situated in the bay window. The bathroom was reached by walking through a dressing area and had luxury White Company and Bramley toiletries, a shower and double ended bath, no expense had been spared.

We were taken on a tour of the rest of the hotel to see the other rooms, from a room called ‘Just right’ which would set you back about £110 plus breakfast, to ‘ A touch of class’ which are mostly on the ground floor with doors leading outside where you can sit and enjoy the sunshine. All the rooms were beautifully appointed and finished to an impeccable standard. Outside the hotel is the club house with a well stocked bar where you can watch sports on the giant TVs. They cater here for the golfer on the go with fresh sandwiches, pies and sausage rolls to grab as you head out onto the course. BELOW: The 16th green, a beautiful par 3 playing up towards the hotel.

The course itself was designed by Frank Pennink who designed Vilamoura Old course in Portugal, it's 6,579 yards, par 72, 18 hole course which winds itself around the hotel, and it's not just the hotel that has benefited from the

9 million investment, the course has also with a major bunker refurbishment and new investment in greenkeeping machinery giving the course better definition. HOLES TO LOOK OUT FOR Hole 1. Straight away you're up for a par 5, 499 yards elevated tee shot into the elbow of this dog leg left, keep right from the tee to avoid a copse of trees. Hole 4. The hardest on the course yardage wise, not the longest par 4 at 411 yards but it's tight and requires an accurate uphill shot to the green. You would not be too unhappy walking off with a bogey. Hole 6. A cracking par 5, the fairway slopes away from you with the 12th century Tewkesbury Abbey making an appearance in the distance, a real chance of a birdie here as the ball keeps on rolling long after you have hit it.

www.countygolfer.co.uk 17

TEWKESBURY PARK Hole 7. A beautiful little hole but with a checkered history. A par 3 named bloody meadow as it's right next to where one of the bloodiest battles of Tewkesbury took place. For me it was a scene of victory as I got a birdie. Hole 10. The best hole on the course in our opinion, a 180 yards par 3, you tee off from an elevated position down onto the green, where the sheer satisfaction of hitting the green in one never leaves you. Hole13. Stroke index two and don’t you know it, the fairway snakes left then right with a tight green to aim for, the advice for this hole is accuracy over distance. Hole 14. 319 yard par 4. Who put that tree in the middle of the fairway? Be careful OOB down the right, but if you dare, flirt with the right and you will get one over your opponent like I did with Newby, I parred it, he had a bogey. Hole 16. I loved this uphill par 3, it's only 158 yards but anything short especially on a hot day will find your ball making its way back to you. Take a longer club, if you hit too long the large bank at the back of the green will catch it and roll you onto the green. Hole 18. 252 yard par 4, PUT YOUR DRIVER AWAY, this is a really intriguing hole to finish on, it’s a very short par 4 with a blind shot off the tee to where the green is. If you're comfortable with a 3 iron then use it, you will be on or near the green, don’t bottle your second shot as most of the hotel rooms and dinning area over look this green so hold your nerve, then you can hold your head up high when you walk off in front of the spectators. After we finished we headed back for some local ale in the club house, watched a bit of golf and reflected on what a great course it is. 18 www.countygolfer.co.uk

JAMES WHATLEY A belated Happy New Year to you all and I hope you have wintered well. I feel we escaped any really bad weather. Before I go any further I must say

"Welcome back Tiger Woods!!!" What a win at the Masters. I won’t say I ever doubted that he would come back but as the years passed it became more unlikely. There are a lot of haters out there in the crowd. In my opinion all I ask them is, do you smile all the time at work?

JAMES WHATLEY James Whatley, writes for County Golfer, informing us about the life of one of Derbyshire’s top Professionals. James is A AA PGA Professional, Head Professional of Morley Hayes and Academy Director of East Midlands Golf Academy. James has been ranked in the top 10 in the Midlands 7 out of the last 8 years. He has represented Great Britain and Ireland in the PGA cup against the USA, played for England in the International Team Championships and played on the European Tour. His reputation as a consistent player and a highly regarded coach is recognised by top class amateurs and professionals who regularly seek his advice and knowledge on their own games.

To perform at such a high standard , with so many distractions and thousands of people watching, you have to go into a mental zone that blocks everything out . Quite a few of my clients since his historic win have asked me questions. Here are a few and my honest answers to them.

Did you ever doubt Tiger ? I tried not to and always defended him, but when his short game went a few years ago I did wonder if the great man we saw would ever win again. When he played last year injury free, there was definitely hope.

Did Tiger inspire you growing up? Absolutely, his win at the 1997 Masters was amazing, I must have watched The VHS of that Masters 50 times, I was 14 at the time and I was just really getting into golf. A lot of people forget he was 4 over par after 9 holes on his first round. What was the turning point in this years Masters ? People will say hole 12, but the two shot swing on 7, Tiger a tap in birdie and Frankie making bogey. It gave Tiger hope. When Finau and Molinari hit it in the water on 12, Tiger was licking his lips. What impressed me was Tigers par putt on that hole. It never really got mentioned, but it was a solid 8 feet.

Did you cry when he won ? There was a tear in my eyes, especially when he embraced his children. I think what has happened

20 www.countygolfer.co.uk

to him over the last ten years has no doubt changed his priorities, so to have his kids to see him win was so special.

Do you think he will win more majors this year? History states when Tiger wins he wins multiple times, people forget he won 5 times in 2013. I expect him to win a few more tournaments and can see him contending in all the majors. As you can probably tell I’m a huge Tiger fan, I love success, that’s why I want Manchester United to return to winning, I want Liverpool to win the league this year after 30 years since last winning the league. People who don’t like successful people, I challenge you not to say anything unless you can say something nice. Long live the Tiger. I will try and summarise my last 6 months starting with the PGA playoffs last November in Turkey. Rounds of 72, 71, 69 left me 1 under par and 5 shots off getting in the PGA cup team. I still have a chance this year at the British Clubs pros in June , where the final 7 members of the team will be chosen. Out in Turkey my putter was a little cold and I just didn’t get going. It is 11 years since I played for Great Britain and Ireland in the PGA cup against the USA, I can’t believe where the years have gone. It brings back many happy memories, especially having my Dad

there to watch me hit every shot. I will be doing my best to prepare for the club pros , we will role the dice and see what happens. I have spent plenty of time in the gym, visiting CrossFit at least three times a week. I managed to damage my groin, and get a frozen shoulder along the way. It has taught me to pace myself and not try and do too much. I enjoy the gym , more for my mental well-being than my golf swing. I visited Turkey again in January for the EMGA annual trip, a short visit to Spain with the college students was quickly followed by another trip to Sawgrass to watch the last round of the players Championship and then play a Pro Am. I stood behind Rory when he hit his drive up the 18, I can honestly say it’s one of the best live shots I’ve ever seen. To be able to pull the trigger under that kind of pressure with water all up the left side of the fairway was incredible.

Two days before we were challenged to play off the tips and try to break 80... everything was going great until the 15th at two over par in tough winds, I finished 5,6,5,6. The easiest 80 I will ever shoot. The famous 17th hole is only 130 yards but with the wind blowing straight into you, it played so difficult. The trip was fantastic and I recommend to anyone that has the chance to make the journey. It ranks as my favourite parkland course in the world. The bar has been set in the Whatley house hold already this year. With my wife winning the first two tournaments of the year she has played in, my 9 year old son making his first birdie and my youngest scoring 38 goals for the little Eaton diamonds under 7s. I don’t have any choice but to aim to win some trophies.

In the pro am I shot rounds of 75, 76, 69 and 66 for a 2 under par total and to finish tied 4th. The 66 was on the stadium course at TPC Sawgrass and it was one of the best rounds I’ve played. I played the last 10 holes in 7 under. www.countygolfer.co.uk 21

JAMES WHATLEY With the season upon us I thought it would be a good chance to talk to you about what essentials to have in your bag this year? Here are a list of mine 1.Golf balls. Sounds a basic one, but always worth having a few extra just in case. I get asked a lot about what ball to use, my biggest suggestion is to use the same one. What I mean by this is, don’t use a Titleist for a few holes, then switch to a Bridgestone. A lot of people use balls they have found. I would encourage you to buy enough of your favourite ball and stick with it. 1. Tee pegs, make sure you never run out . 2. Pencils, stock up. 3. Pitch repairer. Look after the greens, not enough people repair their marks. 4. Glove, and a few spare ones in a plastic bag, just in case it rains. 5. Range finder, and a few extra batteries . 6. Sun cream. When you are as fair as me, factor 50 is essential ( in a plastic bag, just in case it leaks. )

Morley Hayes 15 years have passed since I first started working at Morley Hayes , within that time I have seen the complex become bigger and better. On my first day at work in 2004 the hotel was just being started. The owners are always investing and the attention to detail is fantastic. It really is a great place to come and work 22 www.countygolfer.co.uk

7. Sharpie. Always important to mark up your ball. 8. Line me up. I use a line on my ball to help with my putting alignment. 9. Ball marker. I use a 20p tail side up. 10. Sunglasses. I find these can help when reading putts. 11. Pain relief . As I’m getting older I quite often need to take ibuprofen to help me play through the season. 12. Plenty of water . Stay hydrated. At least two litres per round . 13. Good pair of waterproofs . 14. Head covers. Yes you know I support Forest, and yes what a disappointment. It’s the hope that gets you. I’m not a fan that wishes bad on Derby, and as we speak there is still a glimmer of hope and I hope you make the playoffs. With regard to my clubs, I’ve changed my irons for the first time in 6 years . I’ve gone to 4,5 irons AP3 6-9 irons AP2 PW Vokey 46 degree. My wood set up is still the same, a Taylor Made M1, and old Titleist 3 wood and a cobra rescue. I’m really looking forward to this season, the season will come thick and fast and I need to get my game in shape for May through to September .

and I am always proud to represent Morley Hayes when I’m playing around the world. With awarding winning restaurants and a championship golf course it is one of the best facilities around. Most recently there has been the introduction of a tower course membership for only £60. This will allow you to keep your handicap

and play in competitions without having to spend over £1000. The golfing landscape is changing and golf clubs need to look at the needs of the golfer. The quality of the golf course going into the season is fantastic, the fairways are by far the best I’ve played on in the county this year. Chris and his team are working hard on getting a course that

is consistent 12 months of the year. A lot of places have struggled to recover from the dry weather last year. I take my hat off to any local clubs that have invested in over seeding their fairways to get them back to the high standards that members require. The golf course is your product and it’s so important you keep investing to keep standards high.

East Midlands Golf Academy EMGA has had a successful winter, we are constantly looking at growing the game in all areas. All the professionals do a fantastic job and I’m very proud of each one of them. I got asked recently what I enjoyed the most about my job, now... I enjoy all of it but I would say some of the most

rewarding parts are beginner classes. Getting people to hit the ball up into the air for the first time, play their first hole, make their first par. Golf has given me so much over the years and it’s great to give something back.

One tip to help you this season. You haven’t always got to hit a driver. I recently did a playing lesson at Morley Hayes. On the par 5 , 3rd hole, I suggested a 5 iron off the tee, we then hit 6 iron for the 2nd shot , this left 100 yards to the green. I see so many people on that hole use their driver ending up either out of bounds or hitting it way into the trees right. I challenge you to go and play your home course with just a set of irons, see what you shoot. It may just make you realise there a few holes that you don’t need a driver

TRACK YOUR DISTANCE, CLUBHEAD SPEED, PATH, FACE ANGLE AND MANY MORE THINGS

on . If you would like a playing lesson please get in touch and let me help you play better golf this season. May I take the opportunity to wish you all a great golfing season and I hope to see you down at Morley Hayes soon for either a basket of balls on the range, a round on either the manor or the tower course, or a meal in one of the restaurants. My best

AN OLD IRISH LINKS

The oldest 9-hole links golf club in Ireland

O

n a short visit to Ireland I was delighted to come across a small links course that proudly claims to be the oldest 9-hole links golf club in Ireland. Buncrana Golf Club is a superb seaside 9 hole links course, offering superb views all around. The course is actually situated overlooking the beautiful ‘White Strand’ on the shores of the Lough Swilly and offers a challenging round of golf to players of all handicaps. Their story is one of grit and determination over 120 years or more to ensure this club reaches the highest standards for a links course. They are a friendly bunch too. Chatting to some members afforded us the opportunity to realise that this is a truly welcoming golf club. A history of love and determination. Buncrana Golf Club has a rich history having been in existence since 1890 . The Buncrana Municipal Golf Club was 24 www.countygolfer.co.uk

affiliated to the Golfing Union of Ireland in 1951 and in 1995 the name of the club was changed to the Buncrana Golf Club. However it is claimed that golf was first played here in the early 1800’s, which would make the club the oldest 9-hole links golf club in Ireland. In the early 70’s the members, on a voluntary basis, took it upon themselves to construct a clubhouse. This was primarily because the current premises were constructed out of a tin frame with a wooden finish internally and on stormy days the sand from the shore would blow through the premises! Over the years the club was very fortunate to enlist the services of some very hard working committee members who maintained the clubhouse and course to a high standard. In the late 90’s like their predecessors, the committee and the members of the Buncrana Golf Club decided that the clubhouse was too small and the time was right to bring the clubhouse into the 21st century.

LEFT: Don’t go into the rough or bunkers as it's hard to get out. They even provide ladders to get out of the bunkers!

This new development would consist of new locker rooms, shower rooms, reception, function room and kitchen. The dedicated committee and members set about raising their own funds. The club ran two very successful prize draws which were very well supported by the local community and surrounding areas. These draws raised enough revenue for the club to contemplate the clubhouse extension/refurbishment and in September 2000 this development started.

Rather than sit back and rest on their laurels the committee then decided to enhance the course. The decision was taken to develop 2 new holes to expand the course by introducing another par 4 hole and a new par 5 hole. This development as in the past was carried out by various fund raising projects and was ready for opening in the spring of 2010. The course will remain a 9 hole course but the par will increase from a 62 to a 66 and the extra length will also be beneficial.

Throughout this development the club expanded its member base and catered for the visiting golfers to the area, which in itself is no mean feat.

I

find myself in a very unusual situation. Fame Tate, PGA Professional and former Ladies European and Asian Tour player normally writes articles for County Golfer and now I’m sitting writing an article about her acquisition of Stanedge Golf Club in February this year! Maybe I could just let Fame write it, but that just wouldn’t do would it? I challenged Fame to explain in one sentence, in her own words the ethos behind buying Stanedge Golf Club. We both then agreed a sentence wasn’t enough so here she goes. “Stanedge is a great 9 hole golf course situated on the edge of the Peak District, with superb views and great turf to play golf on. We aim to make golf fun and

accessible at Stanedge GC to both visitors and members alike. We will develop a very inclusive and open policy, allowing people to feel welcome, comfortable and relaxed whilst enjoying their experience at Stanedge Golf Club either on the course, in the clubhouse or learning to play the game with the help of our PGA professional staff.” How has the new era started I ask? “Since we acquired the club 4 weeks ago we have had a great response to our various offers with 50 new members signing up to join the club and various groups getting involved in our coaching and learn to play offers.” Fame explained.

STANEDGE

LEFT: Perfect position at last!

It's my turn now to fill you in on the club and Fame. Stanedge Golf Club, was founded in 1934 and in 1995 the club managed to buy the course, together with some additional land to allow for course developments, as a result, the par for the course was increased from 64 to it’s current 69. Stanedge Golf Club has evolved quite a lot over the past 77 years and has become known as ‘The friendliest golf club in Derbyshire’. Fame is looking forward to building on this reputation and driving the club forward taking it onto what sounds like a bright and exciting journey. As a local girl, Fame knows the golfing trends in the Chesterfield area well as she started playing golf at the age of 10 at Tapton Park Golf Club on the pitch and putt course, this will help her as she carves out a new future for this beautifully situated nine-hole moorland course. It’s fair to say that if you ask many golfers in the area “Which was the first course that you played?” they will say “Tapton”. This was true also for me and my son and many of his friends. Fame then joined Chesterfield Golf Club not long after and soon developed into a talented young player playing for the Derbyshire Girls Team, the Derbyshire Ladies Team

and then at the age of just fourteen, playing off scratch, she was selected to represent England. She then went on to represent England for a total of nine years and Great Britain and Ireland for five years. She also represented Great Britain and Ireland in The Curtis Cup in 2002 and 2004, and in The Vagliano Trophy in 2001 and 2003. Fame was one of only a selection of players to participate two consecutive times in the biennial Curtis Cup. Tapton didn’t get me that far but there you go, and as we know, talent always shines through and Fame has it in abundance as her playing history shows. Putting that into effect at Stanedge is a challenge that she is more than ready for and, in the short time since she has taken over, the new initiatives are already starting to appear. Back to Fame “We want to make Stanedge Golf Club a place where people feel welcome and relaxed so they may enjoy their time with us. We need to make it known to everyone that golf is FUN, ENJOYABLE and ACCESSIBLE at Stanedge Golf Club and it’s simple to get involved. For those who would like membership we have some fantastic introductory offers such as Family Membership (Husband, Wife & Children U17) for £950, for a family of four this equates to less than £20 per month per individual. We are also keen to grow Junior Golf and introduce young players to the game, at £50 per year this is less than £1 per week, I’m not sure where you can get access to sports facilities at that price anywhere else?” What about coaching then? Fame explains “We will also be running regular coaching sessions for all abilities and in particular for those new to the game through our Get into Golf programme”. www.countygolfer.co.uk 29

STANEDGE Our round. We picked the best day of the week to play Standege, fast moving clouds, sunshine and no wind. It’s funny because we had been scheduled to play two weeks before but that was called off due to snow! Such are the delights of the Derbyshire weather. Stanedge is so accessible, situated just off the main Chesterfield (postcode S45 0LW) to Matlock road. Playing golf in a picturesque setting is always a bonus in my book and it doesn’t get much better then here as the club’s elevated position provides panoramic views over the surrounding countryside. If you aim for the Crooked spire off the second tee you won’t go too far wrong! The moment we stepped into the clubhouse at 10am we were welcomed by a couple of

the members who were just enjoying a cuppa after their round. Once again I’m baffled by the scheduling of golfers minds as the nicest part of the day was definitely from 11 onwards. But then again, we all have differing lifestyles. By the time Brian and I were on the 7th hole we were playing millionaires golf. Noone pushing us round, so we had the longest nine holes in history. Definitely more than two hours. My advice is to get there at 12, have a sandwich and coffee, and then enjoy the best that golf can give you. On the first tee I suddenly had an attack of “I remember this hole from my early golfing days”. The green is slightly left and I played wildly right over the wall and into the field. Could I better it this time? Yes no problem, I am a more skilful player nowadays. Well sometimes anyway.

I dropped the ball just off the left-hand edge of the green and then chipped on. Two puts and a four. I shudder to think that so many will walk off with pars and birdies but I get a bogey. The greens were quick and to my surprise, having been under snow and a wet winter were quite dry. There is work to be done on these after a tough winter, and I’m sure over the months they will get better as the grass grows and the greenkeeper plies his trade under Fame. I personally think that it’s best to join the club now so that you can experience it’s progress and to be a part of it too as Fame puts her stamp on the course to bring it to a standard that she knows she can. Time and money spent has already started to pay dividends. The second hole, a 320 yard par 3, gives the opportunity to get the driver out and aim at Chesterfield. I went slightly left to the pine trees and enjoyed walking on the pine needles and bouncy grass. I decide on a seven iron for the next shot and aimed fair and square at the green but came up short. Distance judgement failed me here. One more shot onto the green and two puts for another bogey. Things were going OK

LEFT: The Couse sits high above Chesterfield giving some amazing views from many of the holes.

Enjoying the view over towards Chesterfield on the third tee must have put me off the next shot because when it came to look for my ball, I had cleared the rough the lane and the wall and into the field. Shots dropped here I’m afraid. A good, accurate tee shot is essential, and I was regretting leaving my driver at home as I am finding irons easier. They failed me on this occasion. Brian was beautifully placed on the fairway and I knew he had this hole in the bag as I didn’t fancy the barbed wire in the field. Taking a drop I felt that I could pull it all back but my ball hit the hump just before the green and bounced right rather than forward and it slid off to the right. A chip on and two puts. Total disaster. I felt that, although showing signs of winter wear, the greens were running well and I was coping with them, they were slower on the first four holes. The 97 yard par three 4th is a nasty little hole in the copse which I remember from last time. If I’m faced with playing over water, I always feel I will go in it and then use a bigger club. Well my head went into ‘water ‘mode and I over hit. Brian went the squirrel route! However, I did get over the bracken, the bunker, the green and beyond. Strangely I got a bogey. My hole. Hole 5 at 415 yards brings a completely different hole into play as the course widens out and is so undulating and green. Getting this uphill tee shot beyond the rough, anthills and trees on the right will then give a good approach to the two-tiered green. I loved this hole for many reasons; it’s long and presents the challenge of working out your way over the ditch, and then up onto the green. It’s best to get up and on rather than onto the first tier. Great hole and along with it comes hole 6, a par 5, 526 yard stroke index 7 challenge. It’s a dogleg right but first you have to work out the ditch and the sharp right to the green. We both got off well, Brian’s second went over the ditch mine went in due to the fact I tried to be smart and cut the corner over the tree. Not my best idea. Nevertheless I was enjoying a super round of golf in great conditions. The sun was out and we were on our own. Come on everyone get out here and have an afternoon round in the

most idyllic setting. A double bogey for me, bogey for Brian.

family friendly. Fame’s aim is to make it a family friendly experience.

Brian played onto the green on the 7th which is just behind the clubhouse before going through the gate to the 8th. He won the 7th , I won the 8th because he lost two balls! The 8th mirrors the 3rd so it’s a climb back to the road via the lane, but this time the elevated green goes off left. I did well here. My third shot onto the edge of the green and two puts and in, so a bogey. Hurrah! I just can’t believe the 9th , Brian’s first shot to the centre of the fairway was followed by a wild shot into the copse of trees on the right where it ricochet on I don’t know how many trees but came out onto the fairway. We drew that hole.

I do feel that you can’t get a better owner of a golf club than someone who’s done the rounds as they say, and know a good course when they see one. I take my hat off to you Fame and wish you every success. You can find more information on the Stanedge Golf Club website; www. stanedgegolfclub.co.uk or on the club’s facebook page or follow the club on twitter @stanedgegolfclub also follow Fame on facebook and twitter @famegolfacademy

Back in the clubhouse Fame asked “How was the round”.Why do people insist on asking that? What do you say? GRRRRR or hmmmmm or amazing I parred every hole, or I was rubbish. I decide honesty was best and admitted to a round of bogeys and double bogeys. We both agreed over a bowl of soup and roll that we had thoroughly enjoyed our day’s golf. Brian said it only took him 20 minutes to get there and would be back again and so will I because I think that by coming back quickly with course knowledge I stand a chance of beating Lefty and Newby! Stanedge Golf Club has all the ingredients for golfers; it’s friendly, accessible, affordable and

ALL THE GEAR Celebrating the company’s 40th anniversary, Taylormade introduces original One Mini Driver Drawing on Inspiration from Company’s First Metalwoods, The New Model Incorporates Many of Company’s Most Iconic Product Innovations in a Mini Driver for the Modern Generation TaylorMade Golf Company, an industry leader in product innovation and technology, announce the release of the Original One Mini Driver, a new metalwood that pays homage to the brand’s storied history and utilises many of the most important product technologies in the company’s long lineage of industryleading metalwood performance.

36 www.countygolfer.co.uk

EVOLUTION OF THE MINI DRIVER

TaylorMade first entered the category with the introduction of SLDR® Mini in 2014 and enhanced the product the following year with the faster, higherlaunching AeroBurner™ Mini – both utilising predominantly steel in their construction. While both offered the company’s Speed Pocket™ technology, Original One Mini Driver is designed to deliver a new level of speed, forgiveness and visual appeal never-before seen in this category.

UNDER THE HOOD OF THE ORIGINAL ONE MINI DRIVER

With Original One Mini Driver, engineers have utilised key product technologies found in many of the company’s most notable metalwood offerings intended to deliver a faster, more forgiving and adjustable product. It all starts with a revolutionary tri-material construction, comprised of a titanium body, 50g steel sole plate and TaylorMade’s instantlyrecognisable carbon composite crown. The combination of these three

materials creates an ultralow CG for distance and playability.

WHO IS ORIGINAL ONE MINI DRIVER FOR?

Like its predecessors, the Original One Mini Driver is targeted at golfers of all skill levels. It has been engineered to provide an option off the tee that delivers the accuracy and control of a fairway wood but with more distance and forgiveness. Faster swing speed players may additionally benefit from ease of use off the turf with Original One Mini Drivers’ combination of a medium face depth with ultra-low centre of gravity location for extreme distance and excellent playability from fairway lies.

WHERE THE MINI DRIVER FITS INTO THE BAG

From a performance perspective, the Original One Mini Driver with its 275cc head (9% larger than AeroBurner Mini) will fit directly between a driver and a fairway wood. Some golfers will opt to play the club in addition to their current fairway woods, while others may choose to replace a longer fairway wood that was mainly being used off the tee. Most golfers will keep the regular driver in the bag as the club that ultimately delivers the most distance.

“In 1979, golf was changed forever with the introduction of the Pittsburgh Persimmon™ - the original metalwood. For the past 40 years, TaylorMade has continued that legacy of innovation with game-changing technologies, engineered to help golfers perform at their best. The Original One Mini Driver incorporates that heritage of innovation with key performance technologies, packed into a confidence-inspiring shape that delivers on distance, forgiveness and accuracy.” Tomo Bystedt, Senior Director, Product Creation

Five years to get to Ant! I’ll get to the Ant bit soon so bear with me but first…

I

love words. For instance what about Anomaly? What does it mean and how do I use it? Will I ever use it? Who thought of it? Why? Let’s give it a go. Anomaly: Dictionary meaning. Something that deviates from what is standard, normal or expected. Ok I get that but how does it work? Example: The garden centre proudly proclaimed on a huge sign. “We advise, we carry, we sell, we wrap, we load. The anomaly: We couldn’t find anyone! Lesson. In this instance the service deviated from what I expected in five areas due to the the fact no one was on hand so the services on offer just couldn’t happen. So

44 www.countygolfer.co.uk

which aspect of anomaly did that come under? It deviated from what was expected. Or even what is normal!

anomaly, and 3.5 million quotations that took 70 years to compile and is the accepted authority on the English language

Example 2. A Welsh farm food shop statement. “All our produce is from local producers”.

Originally planned by the Philological Society in 1857 as a ten year project it soon became obvious that this estimate was wildly off the mark and after five years they had only got to the word Ant! I told you I’d get to the ant. The enormity of the task was soon realised and more weight was added to it as the Oxford University Press and Scottish lexicographer and philologist Sir James Augustus Henry Murray began work in earnest.

The anomaly: At the checkout the guy told us that although they had a bakery the bread was from a big supermarket chain! Lesson: Supermarket bread was not what I expected from a local farm food shop. So which aspect of anomaly did that come under? It deviated from what was expected. The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) is an amazing publication of 600,000 words, including

The dictionary was finally finished in 1928. Sadly Murray, having dedicated his life to the task, did not see its completion as he died in 1915. But,

is a dictionary really ever finished? The answer is a resounding no. Language is alive and changes rapidly, especially if words from other countries are brought into play as OED has embraced. Over the 150 years since its inception, the OED has been continuously updated. In fact from its original ten volumes of 400,000 words it now boasts 600,000. Quite unsurprisingly this dictionary story has had its fascinating aspects. For instance one of its major contributors, who, during his life submitted around 10,000 words for inclusion was an ex Union Army surgeon who

in 1872 had shot George Merritt on a dark London street. A case of mistaken identity or the work of a madman? William Chester Minor was found legally innocent of murder, and was “detained in safe custody until Her Majesty’s pleasure is known”, a fact unbeknown to Sir James Augustus Henry Murray at first. It’s a fascinating story that you won’t find on the OED website. So how do I know all this? In 2000 I came across a book by author Simon Winchester entitled ‘The Surgeon of Crowthorne’. It’s a most fascinating book following the life of Dr William Chester Minor an inmate of the Broadmoor

Asylum for the criminally insane. The film “The Professor and the Madman” (allegedly released this month but not so just yet!) starring Mel Gibson, Sean Penn, Natalie Dormer and others, including Steve Coogan, is released based on the book the ‘Surgeon of Crowthorne’. The book is brilliant, I do hope that the film, when it eventually hits the screen, lives up to it. It would be such an anomaly if it didn’t. I’ll let you apply the science. GP

RUDDINGTON GRANGE

RUDDINGTON

GRANGE 48 www.countygolfer.co.uk

We all have that one friend that we play with who we know will always give a really detailed excuse as to why they don’t have a great round today. An excuse that they will use over and over again, they feel that they’d have probably played to par if it wasn’t for…. (insert their excuse here!). The most committed of these players are those that lay their excuses out before they even reach the first tee, just in case they have a bad round. “Struggling with the old knees this morning” or “my ankle’s really starting to play up” or “did I mention I’d played a full 90 mins last night for my local team”. Well guess what? When we played at Ruddington Grange on May of this year, I was that guy!!!

www.countygolfer.co.uk 49

RUDDINGTON GRANGE

I

thought I’d get the excuse out really early, two days early in fact, when Lefty told me we were playing Ruddington Grange, a course I hadn’t played for a few years. “I’ll give it a go, but my shoulder might not hold up after my snowboarding injury in February”. Trying to sound like I was some sort of hero for attempting to play was never going to go down well in the County Golfer Office, it was received with a barrage of abuse! It was a legitimate reason, but sadly this makes no difference. So off we went to Ruddington, Lefty, me and my excuse! It was a beautiful sunny day, the first of the year in shorts (although this was a bit premature as I was freezing on the back 9).

A BIT OF HISTORY The clubhouse itself dates back to 1828 and was built by Charles Paget, and later was brought by Sir Thomas Isaac Birkin, owner of The Birkin Lace Company in Nottingham, who allowed monkeys to roam freely around the house and gardens. At this point I could make a joke about this still being the case, as Lefty was now there, but that would be incredibly immature!! It then passed hands a few times until in 1987 then owner Jack Johnson decided to turn the land into a golf course. The clubhouse has pictures on the wall when it was originally opened in 1988, a very open and bare course, as most are when they start. But over 30 years of natural growth, 5,000 additional trees, and a small army of hard working greens keepers later and you have the beautifully green and mature course that you have today.

OUR ROUND It’s always important to get away well on the first tee. A good drive can set the tone for the rest of the round. A duff shot can also set the tone! With a nice wide open fairway to aim at, 50 www.countygolfer.co.uk

and only 336 yards off the yellows and 303 yards off the reds, this is a great opening hole as it’s pretty easy and a nice one to get you in the swing. Sadly, this was the first and only time I would get my driver out of the bag. It was a decent enough drive, but with my shoulder injury (I know I’m just moaning now) it was obvious that I would have to play the rest of my round without the driver, but at least it would give some practice with my irons. Now you’re settled in after the first it really steps up sharply. The Par 5 second is fraught with danger. Maybe not with your first shot, but definitely with your second/third/ fourth/ hopefully no more. There’s a bunker on the right to catch out any long drives, a stream running diagonally across the fairway, a bunker before the green. There’s also trees to the right of the green partially protecting it if you’re

coming in from the right side of the fairway. It may not be the hardest hole on the course, but you’ll struggle to pick up any shots on it. The 4th hole is relatively short, but a very cleverly designed hole. There’s water on the right which shouldn’t come into play unless you really slice it. If you drive 250 yards you should be ok, any further and you have to have pinpoint accuracy as a stream one side and trees on the other make the fairway incredibly narrow. Lefty decided to take this on, and as much as he got the 250 yards right he played it left into the trees. Me on the other hand, playing with irons, laid up well short and left me a simple iron shot into the green, definitely the way to play this hole. The 9th is another hole that favours a more reserved approach. Lefty went at it with his driver and www.countygolfer.co.uk 51

RUDDINGTON GRANGE overshot the fairway and ended up in the trees. I took an iron, the sensible and correct decision. But just as important as the club choice is direction, as I landed under the trees on the right of the fairway that stick out protecting the green, this made a second shot into the green not an option. Instead playing out and having to take a third shot. This hole pretty much sums up Ruddington Grange, you have to be so so accurate from the tee. The clever layouts, the

52 www.countygolfer.co.uk

well placed bunkers, the big trees added to the lakes and the streams mean you have to pick your route to the green carefully. It’s not a matter of seeing how far you can hit up the fairway and seeing how short an approach shot you can get. Playing this way will lead to a poor rounds. In a way, not being able to use a driver probably helps you the first time you play here. The 16th is a great hole, one that I’d love to play again. It’s a big dogleg to the right, with a stream, water, trees and a bunker that all come

into play. The best way to play this is with a long iron up towards the stream that runs across the fairway, ideally to the left of the fairway. This leaves you with a long shot into the green. I went to the right of the fairway which killed any chance of hitting the green in two. Lefty went long and into the stream which did the same. There are some holes that no amount of GPS trackers or course planners can prepare you for, and this is one of them.

For such a relatively new course, it’s incredibly mature. There are lots of big trees around that not only add to the aesthetics, but also add to the trickery. It had been many years since I’d played Ruddington Grange, but it definitely won’t be anywhere near that long till I return. And no doubt I’ll have a new excuse by then too.

GOLFING NEWS Exciting times ahead for students at Performance Golf Academy There are exciting times ahead for the students at the pioneering Performance Golf Academy education & player training programme run in partnership with Derby College. In April the students will compete in the Association of Colleges National Championships to be played at Morley Hayes. All this takes place alongside the students weekly training schedules which sees them undertaking technical, physical, mental, planning and performance measurement sessions with the coaching team on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday each week at Morley Hayes Golf Complex. The innovative programme set up in 2007 which provides a 2 year education and golf training programme for 16 -19 years is proving a huge success, with all students improving their games to a higher standard, and many moving on to find employment in the golf industry. Derby College students have enjoyed huge success in recent years with students winning Gold medals in national and regional events, with several players progressing to gain national selection to represent the England Schools Golf Team. The Church Course At St Enodoc: One Of The Best Value Courses In England’s Top 100

G

reat debate abounds year round amongst golfers and the golf media alike about which the top golf courses in England are, but less often the topic turns to which are the best value courses in a country boasting hundreds of good quality layouts. Whilst all such discussions are on the whole subjective, there can surely be little argument that the Church Course at St Enodoc is one of the best value courses in the top 100 golf courses in England?

Whilst regularly appearing at the higher end of golf course rankings created by the various golf magazines following assessments by panels that consider such factors as design, location, conditioning and overall impression, a round over the championship links Church Course in north Cornwall will cost just £85 in the peak of summer. And of course if you fancy a spot of relaxation after work or whilst on holiday when the summer days are long, then a twilight round can be booked for as little as £55 whilst 18 holes in the winter will also set you back just £55. Compared to the green fee rates of the top five golf courses in Golf World’s Top 100, St Enodoc is the lowest and indeed over half the price of most of them, therefore offering incredible value for money for the quality of the course.

Newark bounced back in some style

A

fter two defeats in a row, Newark bounced back in some style winning both home matches in April. The third and fourth matches of the season took place, respectively, on Wednesday 17th and 24th April and ended with victories for the home side by 3½ to 2½ against Rushcliffe Golf Club and 3½ to 1½ against Worksop Golf Club. Both matches were played in pleasant weather (which always helps!) with both visiting captains complimenting the course set-up and condition. The food in The Clubhouse has been ‘top-notch’ and much appreciated by visitors and home players alike. In the match versus Rushcliffe, the Captain, partnered by Alan Maidlow secured a point while the Vice-Captain and Dave Yarnell managed a half and there were wins for Lee Hessey and Jamie Macintyre and Michael Bayliss and Tom Cutts. The match against Worksop featured only five pairs. The Captain and Dave Yarnell secured a ‘friendly half’ in the top match while there were wins for the Vice Captain and Garth Stinson, Graham Cobb and Dennis Rawle and Rock Hastings and Ben Pindar.

Ian Woosnam installs SkyTrak at home.

E

uropean golf legend Ian Woosnam has based his new indoor swing room around SkyTrak, golf’s most affordable launch monitor and simulator. In summer 2018 the 61 yearold Welshman saw a SkyTrak in action while making plans to convert some space at his home in Jersey, and decided that it was the right technology for his home setup. After the conversion, which was completed in December 2018, Woosnam began to use SkyTrak both to sharpen his game for tournament play, and as a source of entertainment for golfing friends. “SkyTrak helps me to produce my best golf” said Woosnam. “It gives me everything I need to work on my game including golf course simulation. With it I can now practice at home whenever I want. It’s proven to be accurate and easy to use, and also has a wealth of choice as regards golf courses.

‘Woosie’, as he is known to millions of golf fans worldwide, is still a regular Top 10 finisher on the Staysure Tour, with his last win coming at the Dutch Senior Open in 2014. In 2008, in his first year on what was then called the European Seniors Tour, he won the Order Of Merit and he is a five -time winner on the Tour. In his distinguished professional career to date the Jersey resident has scored 52 professional wins, including the 1991 Masters. He was the first golfer to win more than £1 million in prize money in a single year, and spent 50 weeks as the World No.1. He won the World Matchplay Championship in three different decades, represented Wales in 14 World Cups, and played 8 times in The Ryder Cup, captaining Team Europe to victory in 2006 at The K

Club with a record-equalling winning score. Woosnam has been using his SkyTrak intensively in recent weeks, to prepare for playing in the Masters tournament in early April. On using SkyTrak for ball and equipment testing, Ian Woosnam said: “I needed something which I could get my numbers on” he said, “and since having the SkyTrak installed I have used it to test different golf balls, looking ahead to the 2019 Staysure Tour season. It has also been useful when looking at changing shafts. “And when friends have come around to play golf, it has been absolutely great. I have a wonderful social area now at home, perfect for indoor golf, with the SkyTrak at the centre of the setup.”

“SkyTrak helps me to stay match-fit and keeps my game sharp before tournaments. I can also pick it up and take it with me when I travel to Barbados, where I can just set it up at my place over there – so it’s the ideal launch monitor for my busy schedule." www.countygolfer.co.uk 61
