ALL ABOUT HENDERSON COUNTY The Beautiful Communities of Henderson County, North Carolina Fletcher, Flat Rock, Hendersonville, Mills River, Laurel Park, and Area Communities
Henderson County History Henderson County was part of the Cherokee Nation for 10,000 years. After treaties with the Cherokee in 1777 and 1785, the land was officially opened for settlement by early Appalachian Mountain pioneers. Early land grants date back to 1777, with most occurring after the Revolutionary War in 1783 and 1785. Early settlers included Revolutionary War Patriots, such as Andrew Miller, Matthew Maybin and Joseph Henry, along with many others. Some Tories, such as William Mills, also settled in the county in the 1780s. Henderson County was named for Chief Justice of the State Supreme Court, Judge Leonard Henderson who died in 1833, five years before the county was created. Henderson County was created from Old Buncombe County and Rutherford County. Hendersonville received its original charter in the 1840’s with a population of several hundred people. The county of Henderson is called a typical mountain county, because it consists of these elements: mountain ranges, isolated peaks, a rolling plateau and level valley areas. Elevations range from 1400 feet near Bat Cave at the foot of the Blue Ridge, to 5000 feet on Little Pisgah. Henderson County is located on a intermountain plateau and is almost circled by mountains. To the west, the county touches the Pisgah Ledge, and to the east and south borders the Blue Ridge and Saluda Mountains. The county is bordered on the north side by Buncombe county, to the east by Rutherford and Polk counties, to the west by Transylvania county and to the south by South Carolina. The first source of revenue was agriculture for the people of Henderson County. The settlers grew corn, wheat, rye, potatoes and cabbage. As the self-sustaining pioneer settlers entered the county, they brought fruit trees with them. Hendersonville had easy access from the lowlands and quickly became a vacation destination for tourists to spend the summer months to escape the sweltering heat, for a milder, cooler climate. Historic Hendersonville has been welcoming guests for more than a century, thus creating a strong tourism based industry. This basic economy held up after World War II. Today’s economy is based on tourism, manufacturing, agriculture and retirement.

Burntshirt Vineyards
Burntshirt Vineyards was named from mountain lore, that farmers would burn their fields to clear the land on Burntshirt Mountain for planting. They tossed their shirts in the fire for good luck, and the fields yielded a bountiful crop! The legend lives on to this day on the majestic land that is now Burntshirt Vineyards. Burntshirt Vineyards occupies a unique position with two vineyards situated on both sides of the Eastern Continental Divide at some of highest elevations on the East Coast. A total of twenty-five acres of vineyards were first planted in 2009 in this magical area of the Blue Ridge Province of the Appalachian Mountains. The vineyards were planted with a combination of nineteen European varietals and French-American hybrids. What started primarily as a grape growing operation evolved into the idea of a winery when owners, Lemuel and Sandra Oates, recognizing the quality of their fruit and the opportunity to be a part of the thriving North Carolina wine industry, decided to embark on production of their own premium, estate wines. Open daily year-round. Sun.-Thurs. 12-6 pm, Fri. & Sat. 12-7 pm. Tours daily at 2 pm, 2695 Sugarloaf Rd, Hendersonville, NC 828.685.2402 www.burntshirtvineyards.com

Saint Paul wines are produced and crafted by full-time winemaker, a graduate of California Polytechnic University with more than 14 years of experience in producing wine in Sonoma, California before coming to North Carolina. The tasting room is open year round. Hours are Sunday 12pm - 6pm, Monday - Thursday 11am - 6pm, Friday & Saturday 11am - 7pm. 588 Chestnut Gap Rd, Hendersonville, NC 828.685.4002 www.saintpaulmountainvineyards.com

A large outdoor space provides ample room for seating, games, and special events. The brewery also promotes the art and music scene with nightly live music and monthly art shows. Sierra Nevada's east coast brewing, bottling and distribution operation in Mills River is located 10 miles from downtown Hendersonville in Henderson County. MILLS RIVER NORTH MILLS RIVER RECREATION AREA
About Mills River The Town of Mills River was incorporated in 2003. The Town is 22.5 square miles with a population of 6,897 people. Historically, the community was predominately agriculture and this remains a key cultural element to the Town. The past decade has seen growth for the Town including residential, commercial and industrial development for the Town while also continuing to have a strong agriculture presence. During that same time, the Town purchased property and built a town hall and library facility along with the first phase of the Town park. Lodging establishments in the area range from bed and breakfasts, cabins and cottages and pet friendly environments. Amenities such as shopping, specialty shops and restaurants are conveniently located within a short drive. The Asheville Regional Airport and access to Interstates I-26 and I-40 are nearby the Mills River Area.
North Mills River Campground North Mills River Recreational Area is located within close proximity to Sliding Rock, Looking Glass Falls and the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway. Mills River runs through the rustic campsites, which are organized into two loops on opposite sides of the river.
The Town of Mills River began development of the Mills River Town Complex in 2009 with construction of the first town hall and library building utilizing American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds. The Town received a grant as part of the North Carolina Parks and Recreation Trust Fund that helped to begin Phase One of the park development. In June of 2012, The Town opened Phase I of development for the Mills River Park including a 0.4 acre multi-use trail, a dog park, picnic shelter, tennis courts and playground. Future plans include ballfields, soccer fields, additional playground and picnic shelters, and utilizing the river frontage for fishing, tubing and kayaking. At this time, the rear fields remain in agriculture pending additional facilities. Sierra Nevada’s east coast brewing, bottling and distribution operation in Mills River is located 10 miles from downtown Hendersonville in Henderson County. Sierra Nevada Brewing Company is among America’s first craft breweries and remains highly regarded for using only whole-cone hops and the finest quality ingredients. Sierra Nevada has set the standard for artisan brewers worldwide as a winner of numerous awards for a wide variety of beers and ales, including the legendary Pale Ale. The facility officially started brewing in June 2014 with the release of Rain Check Spiced Stout; a specialty beer brewed for western North Carolina and several surrounding states. The brewey is located on approximately 90 acres along the French Broad River. www.sierranevada.com. Lodging establishments in the area range from bed and breakfast to vacation rentals and some offer pet friendly environments. Unique Sights You Can’t Miss! Jump Off Rock Jump Off Rock offers spectacular scenic mountain views and photographic opportunities during all four seasons of the year.
Jump Off Rock is a scenic overlook which provides a panoramic view of rolling pastures, the Blue Ridge and Pisgah mountain ranges. Jump Off Rock also holds an Indian legend that has been passed down for many, many years. Over 300 years ago a young Cherokee Indian Chief fell in love with a fair Indian maiden. They often met on top of the rock ledge overlooking the valley below. When the young Chief was called to war, the maiden promised him that she would wait for his return from their favorite rock ledge. When the maiden received word that her young Indian Chief had been killed in battle, she climbed to the edge of the rock and jumped off, tribal hunters found her broken body below. Indian legend has it that on moonlit nights you can see the ghost of the maiden on Jump Off Rock. Jump Off is located about 5 miles from downtown at the end of Laurel Park Hwy in the Town of Laurel Park. Directions from downtown Hendersonville take Fifth Avenue West, it becomes Laurel Park Highway, the road dead ends at Jump Off Rock. The park is open daily, sunrise to sunset. No admission charge.
The Old Home Place - Music Barn A fun and friendly venue where country music is performed Friday & Saturday nights, 7:00 P.M. to 10:30 P.M. You’re invited to a night of local culture and enjoyment in a smoke and alcohol free environment. The Old Homeplace is fun for the entire family. Put on your “yeehaw” shoes and come on down. Location: 4060 North Mills River Rd., Mills River • 828.891.7704

Thomas Wolfe’s Angel Author Thomas Wolfe’s first novel was Look Homeward, Angel. In the book there are constant references to an angel statue carved from Italian marble. This is the angel Wolfe placed in American literature. Thomas Wolfe’s father, W.O. Wolfe, sold the statue to the Johnson family to mark the family plot in Oakdale Cemetery. The angel is holding a lily in her left hand and extending her right hand upward. Oakdale Cemetery is located on Hwy. 64 W., just a short distance from downtown. The statue is protected by a wrought iron fence, and there is a historical marker located on the highway.
Historic Henderson County Courthouse The Courthouse was built in 1904 to replace to first courthouse, which was built on the same site in 1842. The Historic Henderson County Courthouse, (1905) was designed by Richard Sharp Smith, the supervising architect of Biltmore House. The Historic Henderson County Courthouse was built of brick in a neoclassical revival style featuring six Corinthian columns on the front and four columns for each of the two side porticos. The focal point of the Courthouse is atop of the copper dome, a 6-foot statue of “Lady Justice.” The statue is the Greek goddess Themis (“The Greek Goddess of Divine Justice and Law”) who is without a blindfold, holding a sword in her right hand and scales in her left. It is believed to be only one of only three in the United States without a blindfold, statues of Themis/Justice are blindfolded to typify that Justice should be impartial. The Courthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 10, 1979. The Historic Henderson County Courthouse is located on Main Street between First & Second Avenues.
