Is a word that means different things. Imagine Art celebrates its 10th year as a featured studio in the EAST Austin Studio Tour. Our community recognizes that this 10th year may also be our last year in EAST, or at least in this place that has become “Real” (i.e. street) to us. Months ago, a handful of us were sitting on the porch when Kati Hammond, one of our Art Directors, simply said, “I’ve been thinking about COVERED, as a show theme for EAST. I see art in a salon style covering the walls”. Vision. That was all we needed to move forward. This exhibition is a culmination of many labors. AmeriCorps Members joined us – as laborers - in September of 2019. Their entry into our community was a submersion - into our culture, our beauty, our mess, our tasks and our daily life. We happily integrated their ‘being with us’. In return, we COVERED them with our acceptance and our gratitude, as well as our challenges and our duties. Much of the work that covers the walls this EAST is new work. Many of the artists that are featured are also new artists in our community and EAST is their debut exhibition. The presence of our AmeriCorps Members has made our labor lighter and has extended our capacity to pull off this 10th year of EAST. The walls are COVERED with the stories of our artists. For some, this story-telling style is their only method of communication. The colors, textures and shapes represent words, feelings, memories and experiences. Our community is rich with personal story. Woven together, these individual expressions tell a greater story – a story of a community place where a people are being transformed for the Glory of God.
A story where we are indeed COVERED by a presence that is greater than ourselves. This community has, perhaps, been COVERED to the point of being hidden in the world. Our formation, as a community, has benefited from that hidden state. That hiddenness has given us the time and space that we needed to discover our own identity. We, as a people of Imagine Art, are more than a free, public art studio. We are more than a makers community that offers a public gallery, affordable space rental and a hot lunch. We are called to be change agents. We are called to prepare for something new that is coming. We are Catalyst in a system that begs for change. Despite being the least likely to succeed we have become leaders – place makers and change agents. Knowledge of our identity gives us the strength to walk in the vision of our calling. Vision. That was all that we needed to move forward. This statement is not complete without acknowledging the connections between place, presence and people. We are a people who are COVERED. We are COVERED under a special anointing. We are wearing a collective Mantle for such a time as this. As a people, we are invited into a greater story, one that happens beyond the walls of Real Street. It is a story that grafts others in to our community to be COVERED with us. We prepare to move forward from this hidden and COVERED place into an unknown, new path. We are a people who are preparing to pioneer into a new chapter. We have not read the last pages of this story. We have just enough light to see the path that is straight under our feet. We are COVERED in grace as we proceed in faith.
