Editor´s Note Is it true it takes a lifetime journey to get to “know yourself”?

Knowing yourself is beyond figuring out your favorite color or your favorite subject in school or your favorite music album. Understanding you – the human being – on deeper levels than the surface. It is an unpredictable road that you must be willing to explore. It brings you face-to-face with your deep self-doubts and insecurities. It makes you take a serious look at the way you are living your life and put it to question. Knowing yourself means understanding your strengths and weaknesses, your passions and fears, your desires and dreams. It means being aware of your likes and dislikes, and your tolerances and limitations. You will, at various points in your life, pause to take stock, and at those times you will realise just how you have changed and how you have grown. Life isn’t static, things have to grow and change and we humans are a part of that big picture of life. Getting to know yourself is part of that growing and changing. The day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom. ~Anais Nin

Meeting Henry Yau, Public Relations & Promotions Director at the 1. How long have you been working with the Children’s Museum and what has been your greatest achievement? I ha ve been at the Children’s Museum of Houston for nearly eight years. From a marketing perspective, our greatest achievement was being named “America’s No. 1 children’s museum” by Parents magazine. From a community perspective, our greatest achievement is to be involved in the creation and the execution of engaging events which keep families coming back time and again.

2. What are some new renovations or events coming up at the Children’s Museum?

06 www.imaginekidsmagazine.com

We are planning to expand to Fort Bend with the opening of the Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center in summer 2016. Mirrored after the Children’s Museum of Houston, the Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center will be housed in a 10,000 square foot repurposed historical building on Highway 90 in Sugar Land. Inside the Discovery Center, six exhibits will be managed as platforms for learning for children from birth to 12 years, with specific measurable educational outcomes for each. Each exhibit will be focused on a quintessential childhood question such as “Where Does It Come From?”, “How Does it Work?” and “Can I Solve That?”

3. What sets apart the Children’s Museum from all other museums in Houston? We are a hands-on, minds-on epicenter for the hip and young. Everything is interactive. We have more than 52-weekly themed events during the year! This means we change our activities every week so that there’s something new to do every day. We

are the only family destination catered to just kids in Houston! We truly are a Playground for Your Mind!

and fields. Sociologists say the rest of the country will look like Houston in the next 50-years. Enough said!

4. Besides The children’s Museum of Houston, Which is your favorite place in Houston? It can be a building, a park, a restaurant, etc.

6. Do you have any advice for young adults pursuing their careers?

I discover a new favorite place every month. Houston is a rapidly evolving landscape! I love to eat in Houston Chinatown (along Bellaire Blvd.); I love to walk in Hermann Park and along Buffalo Bayou Park; I love coffee and dessert shops! (Café Agora, Café Brasil, Boomtown, Black Hole, Antidote, Siphon Coffee, Tout Suite, Red Dessert Dive, Fat Cat’s, Sweet Paris Creperie; I like looking for knick-knacks at Kuhl-Linscomb, Insomnia and Fit; I enjoy going to concerts at Fitzgerald’s. I like taking visitors to BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir and The Vietnamese Buddhist Center.

5. What makes Houston different from other cities in Texas? Houston is a city of opportunity and a melting pot of cultures… but is the people who live in Houston - talented, creative, caring, giving and accepting – which make the city special. We have experts and leaders in all crafts

Yes, first decide what you’d like to do then stick to it (no matter how little it pays at first). Take as many internship opportunities as you can and don’t get sidetrack with jobs that have nothing to do with your career (even though they help pay the bills). What you’re trying to gain is experience; the money will come later. Take risks when you’re young because as you get older, you become more hesitant to do things. It’s OK to ask your parents/family for help!

7. You graduated from the University of Houston, if you had to name one thing that prepared you the most for your future career, what would that be? You’re the driving force of your own destiny. If you don’t take action, nothing is going to happen. When you’re in school, you’ll meet a lot of dreamers. But it’s those who take action who make things happen and go far.

Meeting Houstonian Celebrity Lauren Marquez

9 year old, Lauren, is a native Houstonian. She has been in the business for 3 years. Lauren first signed on with Page Parkes and a year later was picked up by an additional talent agency called Trinity Talent in Louisiana. While Lauren can be seen in the recent feature film, Addicted, you can also find her on local runways and in print ads such as Academy.

feature film Addicted, was my very first movie audition. I auditioned on tape on a Friday, got a callback on Monday, and had to be in Atlanta on that Wednesday to audition live. By the time we got back to Houston, I had gotten the part! I had one month to learn my lines and prepare to be gone for a few weeks before we actually started filming in Atlanta. I was only 7 ½ when I filmed the movie.

1. Lauren describe a typical day in your life

3. What was the funniest moment while filming addicted?

I go to school, do homework, have chores and responsibilities, play outside, have sleep overs with my friends, have lots of family time, and yes, even have a regular bedtime. The only time I feel different is when I am actually on stage modeling in a fashion show, shooting a print ad, or on a set filming a movie. But for the most part I am a typical nine year old and I like that.

The one moment that made everyone laugh and smile the most was what the director, Billy Woodruff, would do after shooting a scene. When he was satisfied with the way the scene went, he would shout out the word “Happiness”.

2. How long have you been working or preparing for this role?

It sounds silly, but right now my favorite place in Houston is my school. I am in 4th grade and I love socializing with my friends and getting a good education at the same time. School is fun.

I have been taking acting and modeling classes since I signed up with Page Parkes at the age 6 ½. The role of Kayla, in the

5. What makes Houston different from other cities? I have visited lots of other cities and am glad I live in Houston. I like how it is so big and there is always something to do. I like the parks, museums, restaurants, and festivals. Also most of my family lives here so we have lots of family get togethers.

6. Do you have any advice for young adults pursuing your career? First, make sure you have the support from your family and friends. They are the ones that will help make your dreams come true. Second, you need to have a lot of self-confidence because there is a ton of rejection in this business. Thirdly, continue to be yourself because at the end of the day it’s your faith, friends, family, and education that are most important.

done to prepare me for my future career. The school side of Page Parkes offers a lot of training classes for both modeling and acting and the talent side gives a lot of support and sends you on the auditions. Mrs. Parkes is such a professional and really trains her talent to be professional at all times too.

8. If you have to thank one person for helping you achieving success. Who would that be? I really have to thank two people for my success, my parents. They have always believed in me.They have paid for my acting classes and photo shoots. They drive me to all my auditions, even when they are in Dallas, Austin, New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and Atlanta. My mother attends all my fashion shows, shops for my clothes, and is the only one in the world who knows how to style my hair correctly.

7. If you had to name one thing that prepared you the most for your future career, what would that be? Signing up with my first talent agency, Page Parkes, has been the very best thing I have

INVISALIGN A Clear Alternative for Orthodontic Appliances Dr. Gustavo Salas

Invisalign is an alternative that has been developed by orthodontist in order to offer an invisible solution. In that way, you can smile during and after the orthodontics treatment. Invisalign is based in an aligners system practically invisible and removable that are custom made to each patient’s teeth in order to guarantee a higher comfort and stability. Invisalign aligners move teeth thanks to the application of precise forces to achieve a movement controlled for each tooth. In contrast to traditional brackets, Invisalign not only controls the degree of movement per aligner, but also the time of each movement. In this way, this is an efficient system of application of forces that moves teeth towards the prescribed and desired position. Aligners are changed each 2 weeks (according to orthodontist indications) and the sequence is in a numeral order to be capable to advance in the orthodontics treatment. The most important thing is the patient must understand the set of aligners consists of a sequence of numbers, each aligner of the upper and lower bow come together in an individual little bag and are numbered from number 1 up to the number given for each individual case. It must be cleared that visits to 10 www.imaginekidsmagazine.com

Orthodontists are every 6-8 weeks as an average. Because they are removable aligners, they must be used, at least, 22 hours per day. Of course, they must be removed to eat and to brush teeth; then they must be kept into the mouth in order to achieve the expected results. Invisalign advantages are many compared to braces because, besides being an aesthetic aligners system (transparent or invisible), it offers a better care of teeth, that means; it is easier to brush you teeth and use floss. The risk of breaking braces or wires by eating food is none and emergencies with Invisalign are less than 1% and most of treatments are shorter. In other words, the satisfaction index for Invisalign is 96%. Invisalign is simple to use and very comfortable. Besides it is easy to be adapted to our daily life. Fall Home Maintenance

Windows and doors are not sealed properly, you can get wáter damage. Any wáter damage can créate a mold issue, so address these problems quickly. • Check for cracks in driveway and foundation and seal.

Our homes are one of our greatest investments, and it is important that we maintain our investments so that they don’t lose value. While most people think of sprucing up their homes in the Spring, for what is typically known as “Spring cleaning”, there are some maintenance ítems that you should attend to in the Fall in order to prevent repairs later. Below is a brief list of ítems you should routinely check in the Fall: Exterior Maintenance: • Have a licensed roofing contractor inspect your roof for loose or damaged shingles. If there is damage caused by a storm or weather, contact your insurance Company. 90% of roofs in Houston are covered by insurance. • Clean out gutters and downspouts. The weather is not always cool enough to cause leaves to fall in the Fall, but if you missed this during Spring cleaning, do it now. • Check Windows and doors to make sure they are sealed properly. Not only will this prevent drafts, but if 20 www.imaginekidsmagazine.com

Yard & Garden: • Organize your garage. • Clear leaves from lawn and reseed patchy áreas. Fertilize your lawn with a high phosphorous mix. • Cover outdoor faucets. You can purchase foam covers at any hardware store. Interior Maintenance: • Have your heating system checked by a licensed HVAC contractor. • Replace air filters. • Check fireplace for gas leaks and have cleaned. • Check your smoke detectors and CO monitors. The current fire safety code requires interlocking smoke detectors to protect your family. These minor routine maintenance ítems will not only maintain the value of your home, but can also keep your family safe.

Gustavo Salas DDS, MS Specialist in Orthodontics for Children and Adults

Arteterapia
