COMMODORE REPORT STEVE SEVERAID
Hello members, it's been an interesting year in and around South Beach Yacht Club! We started the year with the tragic loss of our Club Steward. Thankfully we found Traci and she's been a champion, learning under difficult circumstances. Now, as we find the end of the year approaching, we are faced with our next challenge, quality food service! As many of you may already know Chef John will be retiring on December 15. He will be sorely missed. However, we will take this opportunity to make the next food service solution even better than before. There is something challenging about volunteering at this Club for me. When I was Vice Commodore we lost our chef right away and we had to hurry and find new food service. There was a 100 year flood
in Thailand and as I professinally respond to emergencies and disasters I found myself traveling far more than usual. This year as incoming Commodore I found myself without a Club Steward within weeks of starting. Dick Haidick, myself and others scurried to find a replacement. Since then we have experienced unprecedented disasters in Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico and Napa. Once again I find myself traveling like a maniac and not able to be at the Club as much as I would like to be. I want to thank everybody around me for their support and helping me through a very difficult and busy hurricane season. Not only was I dashing off to hurricanes but my life felt like a hurricane and continues to.
We are quickly approaching our Annual Auction on November 4th and encourage all of you to join us. It's going to be a great night and hopefully we will be able to support our junior sailing program as they grow with us. Here’s to fairer weather in the future so we can all deal with our personal hurricanes.
I visited both the Rockport Yacht Club as well as the Aransas Pass Yacht Club. Both suffered damage and remained closed as a result of the powerful hurricane Harvey.Â

VICE COMMODORE REPORT
I
t was an amazing summer at SBYC with our peak activities of boating and racing. Clubhouse activities provided a nice place for a relaxed drink or meal with friends, after a great day on the water. The summer was filled with entertaining parties. The “Ticket to Ride” Beatles dance party was well organized by Eleanor Harrison, and featured great dance music by a group that truly captured that Beatles sound. Good food, good costumes, and a great evening of dancing. The Beatles party has become one of the well-attended favorites on the Club calendar, as we all flash back to what we were doing during the Beatles era, especially “When I’m 64.” The “Burning Man” SBYC style was our most innovative party of the year. Scott Hauser and Austin Wallace did a great job of organizing a fun party, without burning down the Club. The various member camps allowed for a carnival atmosphere supplemented with a variety of pot-

luck creations to sample. The audio and visual show created by Scott and Austin made it feel like we were transported to a vast Nevada desert, without the gritty sand and wind. Our “Summer of Love” dance party commemorated San Francisco’s hippie era. Ken Ludlum coached out a play list of 60’s music, or was band leader Stephanie Teal actually a reincarnation of Janis Joplin? Best costume prize for couples went to Marcia Bever, a groovy flower chick, and Dennis Gavfert, as Austin Powers. Two guests won costume prizes.
Nanci Williams won best female costume for her customized tie dyed outfit, and best male went to Jimi Hendrix imitator Dave Wilson. Hidden Harbor Yacht Club had their cruise in that night, and they added some wild and crazy people to the dance floor. Do you have ideas to offer the Events Committee? Send them in!

f you missed the announcement at the September members meeting or in the weekly Wave, several Club committees merged efforts and analyzed the costs of the bar inventory and determined that price increases are necessary to ensure the Club can continue without financial impact. I am happy to inform that the changes have been contained and only affect a couple of items. Beginning October 1st, there is a $1 increase (extremely reasonable) to the gold liquors ($6) and beers ($4 pints & $14 for pitchers). I commend the group of evaluators in exploring all options and limiting the impact. I also guarantee that SBYC remains an outstanding bargain, particularly in the Bay Area!! OOD Gerard Sheridan was so “moved” by the news he offered to host a special ceremony to celebrate the “passing” of the $3 beer at the Club. Perhaps others were comparably inspired and joined him to honor the life & times of the SBYC $3 pint.

REAR COMMODORE
W
e’re in the final quarter of the year. All over the planet, people are getting their boats hauled out of the water and getting them winterized for storage. We are so lucky to enjoy boating year round. Have you taken advantage of the great weather we ended up having this year? There is still time. We have a winter season of racing coming up. The dates are online already for the Island Fever Series races in 2017, and will be posted soon for the 2018 dates. Me? I finally was able to take the time to join other boats from the Club on a few of the cruise-outs. Alan Maybruck supports the varied hosts. They work out details with our host clubs, they find activities, and communicate with the cruisers to make it a great experience. At the Oakland Yacht Club cruise-out, we had cocktails and appetizers dockside, brunch at OYC, and we went on a tour of the St. George Distillery. It was fun to see the joyful faces of our racers after each Friday Night race. It was delightful to see them after the X-Bay Friendship race. The same joy even shined after the Jazz Cup Regatta where the lack of wind did not allow for a single boat out of 103 sign-ups to finish. It doesn’t take a fast boat to enjoy racing. It doesn’t even take a boat. Some of the best fun in the Club is volunteering on the Race Committee. We get quite a few people on the water, and the act of volunteering is one of the best ways to share a good experience with your fellow members. We have a smaller, but every bit as dedicated, group of people who are working very hard to train a

Joan Bryne of Hearts of Gold 1st Place Spinnaker 90-135 new generation of sailors. They have put in many hours getting our small boats safe and sailable for our Juniors. It's paid off. Over the summer our junior racers competed in the BAYS regattas, bringing home 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 7th, and 10th place results. Congrats to twins Taytum Weymer and Kelsey Weymer and members Finnagh and Enya Hanrahan. We hope to develop better tools and a more complete saiing schedule to help round out this youth program. I enjoy my place in the Club, working with talented, caring, driven people who do their best to help their fellow members. It’s not too late to get out on the water folks! See you at the Club!

HOOMAN JAZAIE
Hooman is a former member of Los Gatos YC and a current member of Coyote Pt YC. For many years he has participated in CPYC races, InterClub races, SBYRA races, and cruise outs. He currently owns a Cal 20 but frequently races a Catalina 42. For several reasons he wants to be part of SBYC, but primarily because of the "all volunteer" concept. He can't wait to jump in and start contributing to the operations, as well as learning all there is to know on Race Committee.
ELIANA OLSON - Junior Membership Although Eliana lives with her parents in Brooklyn NY she comes to San Francisco each summer for one specific purpose…to sail. This is her second year doing double camps with our Junior Sailing program, and she’ll probably be a junior instructor very soon. She loves sailing with her grandparents and will likely have full control of their Cal 29 in a couple of years. Her primary goals are to sail more and do more racing. She likes the calm and quiet of sailing in the mornings but loves hiking out on a boat in the afternoon Bay breezes. She can’t wait to come back again and again. Along with our other recently installed young ‘uns, Eliana represents the future of South Beach Yacht Club. Please welcome Eliana Olson!
GARY STORM Although Gary grew up in Salinas, he spent every free moment boating on Lake Tahoe…usually water skiing. His passion for being closer to water and boating drove him to recently buy a Mainship 34 that he keeps in Emeryville. He plans to explore the Bay, expanding his water experience with his family and introduce his son to our Junior Sailing program. He and his family looks forward to participating in cruise-outs. Gary completely supports our volunteer structure and with a second home in our neighborhood, he hopes to find many opportunities to contribute.

SHARK SEWARDS At the September meeting David McGuire gave a very interesting presentation on his study and campaign efforts to protect the many species of sharks. David is the writer, producer, and underwater cinematographer of several award-winning shark documentaries. His latest film is Sharks of San Francisco Bay. David is the founder of Shark Stewardship, a non-profit where sharks are studied in terms of population, movement and how these factors relate to fisheries. Through Sea Stewards he catalyzed the coalition leading to the passage of the California Shark Conservation Act, AB 376. The Shark Stewards project is dedicated to ending shark finning and the shark fin trade.
2017 SBYC RACING Spring brought about the Friday Night Series over 15 weeks of racing with typically 40 boats competing from week to week. Everyone has a chance to place from week to week. Gotta be one of the best racing series on the Bay. The post race parties are legendary. July's PICYA Lipton Series enticed racer Paul Kaplan who placed second in his division, bringing home a perpetual trophy to the Club. September launched with the 30th Annual Jazz Cup. Wow! Over 100 boats registered! But then mother nature showed her fickel side. No wind and plenty of heat. Leaving all racers in various stages of dipping and diving in the bay. No racers crossed the finish line. But the parties at SBYC and BYC were great! And we are now officially Mount Gay Red Hat Racers. Late September brought on the Catalina 34 Fleet two-day five-series SF CUP. Next up the Red Bra Regatta held in late October. A record-breaking 19 boats registered –and yet again –windless.The party was busting before the race - squirrely during the doldrums and heaved long and deep into the night. Throughout it all our incredible SBYC Race Committee supported each and every race! photos of the Red Bra Regatta, Jazz Cup and more will be published in the next issue.

THE VALLHALLA CUP Congratulations to SBYC member Paul Kaplan for placing second in the Admirals Cup in the Lipton Series Regatta hosted by the Sausalito Yacht Club. This lovely historical and perpetual Vallhalla trophy was presented to the South Beach Yacht Club's Sprite skipper at the Berkeley Yacht Club during the PICYA delegates monthly meeting in September. The last time SBYC placed in the PICYA 2010 Lipton Series was when Gerard Sheridan won the Sir Thomas J. Lipton Challenge in Tupelo Honey and Daniel Knox won the Larry Knight in Luna Sea.
