hinking about our 30th Anniversary, got me reflecting back on how I came to be where I am at South Beach Yacht Club. In the year 2000, I bought a Tanzer 22, my first boat. I was a member of Los Gatos Yacht Club then, and I was sailing up to San Francisco as often as I could get away. I would pull into a guest slip at the SB Harbor and walk up to the double-wide for a beer and to chat with the local members. I sold that boat in 2003. For one year, I was a partner on an Erickson 27 at South Beach Harbor. I would spend weekend days sailing, or sanding it. Once in a while, I would chat with a nice man on the boat next to us. He told me about South Beach Yacht Club. That was Martin Fay.
I was thrilled when I got the nod for a slip at South Beach in 2009. I was racing on boats there already, but that doesn’t compare to the experience of having a home for your boat in the place you know it was meant to be. I became a member at South Beach in 2013. I am so happy to be a part of this growing Club full of fun, friendly people whom I came to enjoy in the trailer on the Pier! Just recently, I sold my Catalina 27 to a guy who has a slip in the harbor, and I bought a Catalina 30. hoy Mates,we’ve had a good run at the SBYC in our first half. Several members have stepped up and deserve thanks for crafting so many wonderful experiences so far, with many more to come. A huge thank you Susie Fay and Erica Ackerman for a fabulous Crab Feed and to Deb Phairas for hosting a jam-packed Super Bowl party. Our “Meet the Chef ” nights featuring Small Plates & Bar Bites by Chef Mark has been a great success. An a la carte dinner served tapas style, with small plates for one or two to share, held monthly. All plates priced between $5 - $10 apiece. The fish tacos and poke have been devoured. Plans to amp up these evenings with card games and live music are underway. Next time bring a few friends! Fancy dress was in order at the SBYC Oscar’s party. A big thanks to Barb Haiduck and Jocelyn Swanson for hosting and entertaining. Opening Day not only brought in awards for Anabel and Good Omen but the 30+ plus volunteers who prepared 1,000 tasty oysters and savory steak sandwiches were well rewarded with a beautiful evening on the deck. You have to admit, especially with our present Clubhouse, that the costs of being a member - in this great boating location, the physical beauty of our home away from home and the enchanting view we enjoy comes quite affordably considering what you could be paying at other yacht clubs or any other type of activity based membership group. To keep the fantastic first half momentum going we need a few more volunteers to sign up as Deck Cap-
tains, party hosts or co-hosts and at least one more host for a Cruise-Out. For each of these there are seasoned people to coach you. So please pitch in and help make the Club the great place it can be. an Francisco Baykeeper has been a fierce champion of San Francisco Bay since 1989. They are a passionate team of lawyers, scientists, and policy advocates tackling the biggest threats to the Bay. Baykeeper regularly patrols the Bay by boat, plane, and drone to identify and stop pollution. On patrol a few years ago, Baykeeper’s staff scientist witnessed a towering pile of petroleum coke, a refinery by-product, on a shoreline loading dock. The company was transferring the material into the cargo hold of an idling ship, and the black powder was falling directly into the water. Baykeeper staff took photographs and collected a water sample. Results showed that the
sample contained high levels of lead, arsenic, zinc, and other heavy metals that harm fish and birds in the Bay. Baykeeper investigated the facility further and discovered that the company had reported dumping high levels of pollutants into the Bay for many years, but local agencies had failed to do anything about it. So Baykeeper’s lawyers contacted them, and after two years of site inspections and negotiations with Baykeeper’s technical experts, the company agreed to install protective equipment and comply with legal requirements to keep pollution out of the Bay. With an estimated 280 legal victories under its belt, Baykeeper has a track record of reducing heavy metal, sewage, oil, and trash pollution. Baykeeper’s patrol boat is berthed at South Beach Harbor. A group of ten volunteer Skippers (including SBYC members Robert Fairbank, Bob Wertz, and Adam Simmonds) helm the weekly Bay patrols.
The on-the-water and aerial patrols, along with the group’s pollution hotline (1-800-Keep-Bay or hotline @baykeeper.org) are key ways that Baykeeper finds and stops pollution. And Baykeeper knows how to have fun and celebrate a good cause, too! They will host the 5th Annual Bay Parade on Sunday, July 15 – a celebration of the Bay, on the Bay, for the Bay – with the grand finale in McCovey Cove featured on the Giants jumbotron. Costumes and decorated boats encouraged! And Anchor Brewing hosts the after party with free food and beer.
Baykeeper is seeking boaters to volunteer in the parade on July 15. Boats of all sizes are needed to host swim teams and accompany swimmers in the water. If interested, please visit baykeeper.org/bayparade for more info and to register for the event. It’s a great way to give back to the Bay!

REAR COMMODORE

ver since being approached to take on the role of Rear Commodore, everyone keeps asking about my “vision” for the year. Sure, I can oversee and delegate to the Executive Race Committee, Jr. Sailing Committee, and Cruise Out Director. But what do *I* want to accomplish, how will *I* leave my mark? Over the past few months, I’ve had many conversations with various people at the club, about numerous different topics and ideas. How can we expand Jr. Sailing? How do we get more boats for the Red Bra Regatta? Whatever happened to the Adult Dinghy program? Maybe we should organize a monthly member sail day? What about a Women’s race clinic? Does the Club offer any learn-to-sail opportunities? Can we partner with Treasure Island Sailing Center? Or Spinnaker Sailing? Or Bayview Boat Club? Really, these are all asking the same question. How can we expand access to the water? All of our members have a demonstrated interest in boating. And while some own boats and can participate in boating at their pleasure, many others are looking for more opportunities. And are asking if South Beach Yacht Club, their yacht club, can help them in this endeavor. This is a conversation happening across the country, in every yacht club or boating club. We all know the trends. Participation in the sport is down, boat ownership is down. We’re very fortunate in the Bay Area that many people who have never sailed before are drawn to the Bay and pick up the sport later in life.

Elsewhere, the conversation is about kids who grew up sailing dropping off after college. If we had unlimited money and unlimited space, the solution might be easy: Buy a fleet of dinghies, a fleet of keel boats. Have boats for charter, staff to teach, events for racers, etc. But we don’t have unlimited space. We have very limited space. We’ve basically maxed out. And we certainly don’t have unlimited money. So we need to be more creative. We’ll need ideas from our members. And probably some of the great volunteer spirit that we’re so proud of. I’m hoping to continue these conversations throughout the year. Brandon Stander, a new Director and chair of SLRP, and I are currently working to schedule a series of town hall sessions specifically on this topic. We hope that you will join us in brainstorming ways to expand access to boating in our club. We all have a demonstrated interest in boating. But we want everyone to have every opportunity possible to turn that interest into action. Please reach out to me! All of our members have a “demonstrated interest in boating”. O N T H E D O C K O F T H E B AY Nyna Armstrong is working to join the ranks of mostly-male Principle Race Officers (PRO) who run sailing races. Nyna passed the US Sailing PRO course and is making her way through the remaining requirements - here acting as timer, managing the flag and sound volunteers on Anabel to start the race. Having joined the RC two years ago, Nyna is now co-chair of the Friday Night Series and member of the Executive Race Committee. “Racing is a huge part of who we are as a club, and the Race Committee is at the heart of it. Whether you’re a racer, cruiser or power boater, you’ll love the fast pace and camaraderie. Join us!”

pening Day on the Bay festivites hooked us two winning entries in the annual season
opening parade. Anabel decked out in her flag finery and a costumed tribe (Hanrahan's) won 2nd Place in her category and Good Omen (Gerry and Matthew Cannon) hauled in 3rd Place in her category. John Prouty and Milt Smith displayed worldwide pride with over a dozen college students from U.C. Berkeley's Rotaract Club on Fuelin' Around and Ron Davis and crew on Even Kiehl brought our total entries to four proud boats! We are competing for the Benham Award - fingers crossed. Post the Parade - Bob Mason hosted an Oyster Festo with a packed deck on a gorgeous afternoon. So many friends and traveling members popped in a true reunion of like-spirited folks!
PRACTICE PAYS OFF Congratulations to our member Finnagh Hanrahan, and to Marianna Lubarski, daughter of FNS racer Sergey Lubarski of Russian Roulette. Both girls have completed a 4 day 40 hour course for US Sailing Level 1 Instructor course. It was hard work because even before attending the course, they needed to complete 5 hours of CPR and First Aid training, a 16 hour Safe Powerboat Handling Course and a 1 hour online SafeSport course. oger Ladwig and Lori O’Rourke organized this year’s cruise out from SBYC to Marin YC over Memorial Day weekend. A veritable armada left South Beach on Saturday morning and steamed north to Marin: JYB (Roger Ladwig and Lori O’Rourke), Even Kiehl (Ron and Danette Davis), Two Drifters (Tom and Elissa Rogers), Gianduja (Brad and Evian Ketchem) and Take Five (Bruce and Julie Wicklund). Later Sam I Am (Mike Satterland and crew Joani Bryne, Colm Pelow, Axel and Jan) had a leisurely sail over to dock with the rest of the fleet.
Saturday afternoon everyone settled in, explored Marin YC’s great facilities – bocce court, swimming pool, rec center, and did what we do best on cruise outs: hang out and chat with friends. The cruisers, joined by road cruisers Patti Mangan, Karen and Phil Thomas, Tad and Libbie Sheldon, then helped the Wicklunds rename and christen their new boat, Take Five, with the required ceremony and Champagne. The group’s instructions as to which way was North, South, East and West, for purposes of pouring said Champagne into the sea, was iffy to say the least…

After dinner at MYC, the evening ended in the bar (who’d a guessed?) to watch the Warriors crush the Rockets in game 6 of the Conference Finals. Not so bright and early Sunday, we headed for brunch at Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael aboard Take Five, and all enjoyed the glorious weather and sunshine. Everyone helped with Sunday night’s cocktails and a dinner of hearty appetizers at the Marin YC recreation center, with great sunset views over the docks.
