We interviewed Sara Carling (Rocklin, CA), the designer of our new Happy Harvest scrapbooking line about her experiences as a designer and her inspiration for her new line. Here’s what she had to say...

Imaginisce: What did you use as inspiration to design the Happy Harvest line? Sara Carling: It’s easy be inspired when you’re dreaming up a fall collection. Apple pies, cozy sweaters, crisp fall air, lovely colors. It’s my favorite season.

I: What is your favorite thing about the Happy Harvest line? SC: Honestly, I love everything about this line. But if I had to choose it would be the colors, word art, characters, and leaves blowing in the wind.

See! I can’t just pick one thing. The collection as a whole really captures the magic of fall.

I: What made you decide to become a scrapbook line designer? SC: I feel like this career found me. I started as a digital scrapbooker who needed designs to use for my layouts. I thought it would be fun to create some of my own, and one thing lead to another.

I: What is your creative process when you are designing a scrapbooking line? SC: Have you heard of method acting? I call it method designing. For example, when I’m designing a Christmas collection (even if it’s in the middle of summer) I’ll listen to Christmas music, bake holiday cookies, and maybe even put up a decoration or two. I want to get excited about whatever the theme is so that those feelings come through in the designs.

I: How did you get into the scrapbooking industry? SC: I taught myself graphic design, and started selling some of my designs online to digital scrapbookers. I had some small work with a few scrapbook companies, but not much. Then, four years ago I met Imaginisce at a trade show in Anaheim, and I’ve been working with them ever since! They are such a warm & wonderful company to design for!!

I: What do you do when you have a creative block? SC: Creative blocks are tricky. One thing that seems to help is to do something else that’s creative in a different way. Things like baking, or other forms of crafting. They help to get me in the right energy so I can design.

I: What are some of your quirks or traits that most people wouldn’t expect you to have (as a designer)?

SC: Aside from the fact that I’ll put up my Christmas decorations in July just to get inspired, I find it to be a little quirky how much music plays a role in my creative process. I find new music with every collection I design. It helps to give me new energy.

I: What is your favorite vacation spot? SC: My favorite “Daycation” spot is at Lake Tahoe in the summer.

It’s the perfect place to lay out on the sand with the kids, and play in the cool glacial waters of the lake. It couldn’t be more beautiful there.

I: What is your favorite talent that you’re working on developing?

SC: A talent I’m working on developing is Aztec dancing! I recently met a group of Aztec dancers at a Pow wow in Northern California. I was so blown away by them that I talked to them after to learn more about their culture. They were so kind, and invited me to come practice with them.

Now I dance with them twice a week. I’m so new to it that I have no idea what I’m doing, and I’m certain I look like a fool. But I completely love it. I hope to learn it well enough to perform with them in full costume some day.

I: If you could tell our scrapbookers one thing, what would it be?

SC: You all inspire me so much! I love seeing the amazing things you do with stickers, stamps, ribbons & paper. I feel honored every time I see someone use my designs to help capture & preserve their memories.

Designer Hints: 1. Using corner rounder, round bottom left and right corners using corner rounder. Flip pages are 3 1/4” width and 3 1/2” height.

2. Trim around all text for each page as shown. Sizes of those squares will vary in size based on the size of the text. Carefully review each phrase to determine approximate size.

3. Chalk ink around all cut pieces, circles, text blocks and background papers.

When pages are assembled punch holes 1/2” from top edge and 1/2” from outer edge.

Carefully remove smaller part of layered sticker on Winter Wonderland sticker stacker. We will reapply foam tape to these and adhere the top layer pieces to our countdown pages.
