FREEMASONRY IN PICTON
Supporting Charities and the Community A fraternity of men founded in England more than 300 years ago
PICTON’S LODGE Est.1909 Are you a Mason new to the area? Why not come along to one of our meetings and enjoy the hospitality offered by the brethren.
Are you interested in learning more about Freemasonry? Perhaps interested in joining? Find out more about us, including our long-term program of fundraising for charity.
Contact our secretary E: email@pictonlodge.com Picton Masonic Lodge meets on the second Saturday of each month at 7.00pm.
Lodge Picton No. 258 (Adapted from an article by Brother Tony Morrice)
The Lodge Picton was born of informal discussions between three men whilst out walking the hills around Picton in 1909. It has survived two world Wars, Depression, good and bad times, but to this day remains in continuous operation. The first meeting of Lodge Picton took place in rented rooms in Menangle Street, Picton on 26 February, 1909. At this meeting rooms used were dedicated and the installation of Worshipful Brother Walter L. Craig, Picton's first Master, took place. The minutes recorded 'The Charter having been exhibited, the Lodge under name "Lodge Picton" was declared open and according to established usage and custom, to practice the arts and conduct the ceremonies of Ancient Freemasonry".
The first social function held by Lodge Picton was held later in that year, and became an annual event to serve as a reunion of the Brethren. 1909 was a period when the railway had only been in Picton for 44 years and place names such as Tahmoor, Nepean, Avon Dam and Yanderra hadn't been thought of. There was however, Picton, Bargo Brush and Picton Lakes, as well as very few cars and a poor road system. Picton, up to 1960 had a major locomotive depot and at one time there were up to 4,000 men employed by the Department of Railways. Out of the many men who came to work for the railways, a good proportion of them either initiated or affiliated into the Freemasonry in Lodge Picton.

Autumn in Bowral
From the Editor April Welcome to the Southern Highlands and surrounding areas when pleasant autumn days and cooler nights make for a perfect time to enjoy the delightful attractions and events that our region is known for! During April and May, indulge your appreciation of antiques and theatre, participate in a truly Scottish event and join in the celebration of the pumpkin and the apple. For those of you with a love of Australian Road Transport History, look out for Haulin' the Hume, an event that will retrace as much of the Old Hume Highway as possible, reliving some of the sounds, sights and smells of the pre-emissions era. The Illawarra Fly will hold an exciting event for the kids during the School Holidays with Star Gazing and Indigenous Story Telling at the Treetop Walk. It will be a unique experience and one the kids will thoroughly enjoy. An annual ‘standout’ festival in the Southern Highlands is Brigadoon in Bundanoon. Held each year in April, the gathering of the clans means that festivities will include a street parade,
massed pipe bands, dancing, games, displays and more. All to celebrate this important Scottish event! The Robertson Railway Committee will host a Vintage and Classic Car Day during April. The day will be made special with displays of restored and functioning vintage working machinery. The Southern Highlands Antiques and Collectables Fair is on again early in May and promises to be a draw card for collectors, both serious and novice. Coincidently, 5 May is a day in our region when we celebrate the pumpkin and the apple. The Collector Village will hold its annual Pumpkin Festival with all things ‘pumpkin’, and Tallong will hold its annual event, the Tallong Apple Day. Why not make a day of it and enjoy two festivals on the same day. Both events promise to be family friendly, with lots of fun, food and entertainment.

HAULIN' THE HUME
27 April
Western Sydney Historical Truck Club will host Haulin’ the Hume for 2013. We will retrace as much of The Old Hume Highway as possible. Leaving Sydney, we plan to relive some of the sounds, sights and smells of the pre-emissions era. We will depart from the Beech Road Industrial Estate opposite ‘Uncle Leo’s’ in Casula, and follow Highway 31 down through Camden, up over Razorback, through the ‘hole in the wall’ at Picton, and cover the picturesque drive through to Yerrinbool, Mittagong, Berrima, Goulburn, The Cullerin Range and then into Gunning for lunch at the Gunning Showground where a display will be held for public viewing. We will then head to Yass where the day will finish.

Haulin' the Hume
Old Hume Highway Road Run 27 April
Once again, the Western Sydney Historic Truck Club is conducting their club run on 27 April, retracing as much as possible of the old Hume Highway between Sydney and Yass. Starting at Casula in Sydney, the 250 strong field will wend its way through Camden, up the Razorback, through the ‘hole in the wall’ at Picton, through to Yerrinbool, Mittagong, Berrima, Goulburn, The Cullerin Range and down to Gunning for lunch. They will stay in Gunning for 4 hours starting from 11am, so you can catch a glimpse of the entries before they head on to Yass for the evening via Veterans Road. Sunday will be spent returning with stops along the way including in Gunning which is always popular. The field includes semi trailers, various vintage rigid trucks, prime movers and the ever popular fleet of 16 clipper buses. So take a vantage point along the route or simply head to Gunning
for the market day and wait for the rigs to roll in. It is sure to be great day with a chance to relive the sights and sounds of a transport era gone buy. Ph: 0414 714 562 www.wshtc.com.au It is all in the cause of Autism so donate what you can to Autism Spectrum Australia on (02) 8977 8300.

Bundanoon Berrima - a shoppers paradise Berrima is a unique, historic village offering a day tripper the most wonderful array of food and shopping experiences in a living history environment. Established as a township in 1831, Berrima is a preserved Australian, Georgian, colonial town. It is located in a picturesque valley on a bend of the Wingecarribee River. The town was laid out in the manner of an English village around a village green. The centre of the village today is a living museum, with many of the original buildings, including the gaol, still providing a unique atmosphere within the town. Today, Berrima is a favourite day trip destination for Sydneysiders and Illawarra and Canberra residents. It offers exquisite boutique shopping, antiques and great food. Moss Vale, the Shire Capital Moss Vale is the gateway to the Hume Highway and the Illawarra and is central to Southern Highland townships and villages and to Highland attractions. The town retains an atmosphere and charm of yesteryear due to an effort to preserve and restore old public buildings and private homes. Some buildings date to the 1860s 1890s, the Old Post Office. The Moss Vale Hotel, Court House and the historic Railway Station are fine examples of the 19C architecture. Leighton Gardens, in the centre of town, is as pretty as a picture in spring and autumn with massed displays of flowers and shrubs.

Bundanoon, a "place of deep gullies". Early industries in the district included timber milling, sandstone quarrying and farming. Today Bundanoon retains many of its early 20C buildings and has a 'yesteryear' charm about it. Bundanoon has its share of interesting craft shops, art galleries, cafes, restaurants, nurseries and picnic areas. You can hire a bike, walk through nearby Morton National Park, enjoy picnic spots, native flowers and birds and see kangaroos and wallabies at dusk on the edge of town. Take a walk to "Glow Worm Glen" and discover how the Glow Worms live and glow. Bundanoon is a bushwalkers paradise with fourteen suggested walks; most have vantage points with spectacular views across the valleys. Probably the most visited lookout is the one overlooking the Grand Canyon 3km from the town centre.

Bundanoon
"a place of deep gullies"
Bundanoon is Brigadoon for a day Feel the thrill of the occasion on 6 April After the mists have risen at dawn, the town of Bundanoon becomes Brigadoon for a day. The main street is closed for the big parade which begins at 9.30 am when thousands will line the streets as hundreds of pipes and drums, colourful floats and displays, marchers and vintage cars, make their way to the grounds. After the bands have arrived, the first of the massed band displays takes place. With carefully manoeuvred patterns of marchers, the flourishes of the drum majors, and the heavenly sound of the pipes, you don't need to be Scottish to feel the thrill of the occasion. After the Official Opening ceremony at 10.30am, there will be a massed demonstration of Scottish Country Dancing. There are enough activities to keep you busy and entertained at Brigadoon throughout the day, including the solo fiddler, kennel club, Highland Cattle,
displays choirs and other performers. You could spend some time watching the bands and drum majors practising, admire the highland dances, take in the colourful tartan dress of the crowds, or visit the many stalls. There are dozens of food stalls but don't miss out on the Highland delicacies such as Scots pies, haggis, blood pudding, square sausage, and the famous Scottish Shortbread. Other stalls offer Caledonian souvenirs and goods, jams and preserves, clothing, arts and crafts, and information. As the day draws to a close, the final ceremonies, with pipes and drums, appear for the Final Massed Bands Display. Then the crowd falls silent for the Lone Piper. In the evening, visitors to Brigadoon and participants gather at the local hall for the Ceilidh - a traditional Highlands knees-up where the haggis holds pride of place.

World Premiere for Pride and Prejudice in the Southern Highlands
Steve Clancy and Ebony Hope as Mr Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet with Jim Cheesley the director.
This April, the Highlands Theatre Group is proud to present their version of Pride and Prejudice. Publicity officer Nicole Freeman said “I was having coffee with a group of ladies the other day and was explaining the next show to them when they all looked absurdly at me ...... because, of course, they all knew the book". She added that “it is unusual and
impressive, that 200 years on, Pride and Prejudice is still a favourite, especially amongst women, when other books of Jane Austen’s generation, have long since faded from the public’s consciousness.” The local Jane Austen Society approached the Highlands Theatre Group mid 2011 in anticipation of the bicentenary. Performing such a well known story has its draw backs because there is, more than ever, the need to get it right, and for it to follow the story as much as possible. Director Jim Cheesley had an idea about how he wanted the play to unfold so, because there was no definitive play for the novel, he set about writing his own. After unveiling it to members last year, they were satisfied they had a great script, and after one of the biggest turnouts to auditions in January, they are confident of a successful show with a great cast.
BOOKINGS: The Highlands Theatre Group’s world premiere of Pride and Prejudice, go to: www.htg.org.au Click on the yellow ‘BOOK‘ button. Follow the prompts or contact Southern Highlands Tourism on

VENUE: Mittagong Playhouse, Bowral Road, Mittagong. It is suggested if you are picking up tickets, to get there at least 20 minutes before the show starts. JOIN the Highlands Theatre Group email list to get show updates and go in the draw at the end of each production for two free tickets to the next one!
