Coffee Shops in the Hunter

A short history of the London Coffee Shop (it’s not Starbucks) The Starbucks on Russell Street near Covent Garden piazza is one of London’s many cloned coffee shops. Can you imagine walking in, sitting next to a stranger, and asking for the latest news? Or slamming a recent novel down next to someone’s coffee and asking for their opinion before delivering yours? It’s not the done thing.

now stands, was the white marble head of a lion with wide-open jaws. The public was invited to feed it with letters, limericks and stories; the best of the lion’s digest were published in a weekly edition of Joseph Addison’s Guardian newspaper, entitled ‘the roarings of the lion’. This is one of London’s many forgotten coffeehouses, the first of which was opened by an eccentric Greek named Pasqua Roseé in 1652. So next time you are in a Starbucks in London, don’t forget to slam your novel on an adjoining table and start talking about politics!

But more than 300 years ago, precisely this kind of behaviour was encouraged in thousands of coffeehouses all over London. In 1712, the Starbucks site was occupied by Button’s coffeehouse. Inside, poets, playwrights, journalists and members of the public gathered around long wooden tables drinking, thinking, writing and discussing literature into the night. Nailed to the wall, near where the Starbucks community notice board

Newcastle Airport is international ready

On the 25 August the Hunter region celebrated a major milestone with the official opening of the international arrivals and departure fit-out at Newcastle Airport. The fit-out has included the installation of the necessary security technology, IT technology, passenger screening equipment, and furniture for the border agencies. “It’s great to see it all come together. Our region is now one step closer to offering direct international services at Newcastle Airport,” said Airport CEO, Dr Peter Cock.

“From a terminal infrastructure perspective, we have done everything we need to do to be ready for international flights,” said Peter. “I know our region is passionate about travel and there is an incredible desire for international travel. I know, because I’m asked almost every day that you want to be able to fly overseas from your local airport. While my team can talk the talk to the airlines, we need you to walk the walk with the airlines. We need you to keep travelling, we need you to choose Newcastle Airport as your point A when you travel, at the moment be it for a domestic or international trip—hubbing through Brisbane, the Gold Coast, or Melbourne. We need you to show the airlines that we want to go smarter and fly from our local airport. We deserve to have this infrastructure and we deserve to have direct international flights to our region. We’ve delivered the first to you and I assure you we’re working hard to deliver the latter too,” concluded Peter. www.newcastleairport.com.au

I OUGHT TO BE IN PICTURES By Neil Simon Playing 11 to 25 November

I Ought to be in Pictures is a play by Neil Simon that later became a film of the same name. The three-character comedy/drama focuses on Herbert Tucker a struggling, writer's-blocked screenwriter who abandoned his New York family 16 years earlier. Now his daughter Libby has arrived on the West Hollywood doorstep of the father she barely remembers, convinced he can jump-start the Hollywood acting career she desires. This forces Herb to deal with the responsibilities of parenthood, and to come to terms with his onagain/off-again relationship with adoring girlfriend Steffy. After three failed marriages, his affair with Steffy is a casual one. As the story progresses, Herb draws closer to his daughter, who realizes that her trip's true purpose was to re-establish a relationship with her father.

Hidden Treasures Did you just think D’Arcy Doyle when you saw the painting above? Think again! The painter is Lex Yates. Lex Yates was 17 when he came across d’Arcy Doyle’s paintings and was intrigued by their natural purity and detail. Fast forward 30 years, and after a successful career in the metal working industry Lex decided to study fine arts and finally spend more time painting. Doyle had remained an inspiration for Lex throughout the decades. Another 10 years on, after many years on a farm in Queensland, Lex now lives on a bush block in the Lake Macquarie Area, enjoys painting both contemporary art and Australian bush scenes, of which most are painted based on his own childhood memories, and has finally found the confidence to make his paintings available to the wider public. The small rural writers festival with big names and big ideas ‘COME ON UP’ is the catch cry of the Upper Hunter Valley and the rural town of Scone wants you to ‘come on up’, not just to experience great country hospitality and marvel making connectionslandscape, but to be stimulated at the glorious and10refreshed by making new connections at the - 12 November 2017 annual Scone Literary Festival. Now in its fourth year, the Festival this year, on 11 and 12 November, boasts a stellar line up of big names worthy of being on the bill of any major city festival. It is the only writer’s festival in the Upper Hunter and is growing in audience size and reputation at breakneck speed. One of the stars is Peter FitzSimons and significantly, as the 11th is Remembrance Day, his many books have relevance, covering

various conflicts including Fromelles and VilliersBretonneux. He will be in conversation with our local literary treasure Phillip Adams. President of the festival committee Jan Sinclair said: ”We may be a small festival in a small town, but we have big ideas and a real desire to grow this wonderful event into one of the region’s biggest events. We are so thrilled to have the likes of Peter FitzSimons on this year’s program. Attracting such names really takes the festival into a different league. We would like to think that in the next few years we could grow in size and become similar in size to the Byron Bay Writers Festival”. And with a line up like the 2017 event there is no reason that this might not eventuate!

Fine dining award win for Circa 1876

Circa 1876 is the best fine dining restaurant in regional NSW, with the Pokolbin restaurant’s win at the prestigious Restaurants & Catering Industry Association Australia (R&CA) awards [September 18] cementing its culinary reputation. Executive chef Trent Barrett and his team brought home the NSW Regional Fine Dining award from the Savour Australia Restaurant & Catering Hostplus Awards for Excellence. Circa 1876 also earned an honourable mention in the NSW Regional Restaurant Caterer category. Trent Barrett, whose sustainable dining philosophy fuels his menu through the restaurant’s kitchen garden, onsite bee hives, quails and chooks, praised his team: ``No one can achieve excellence without the commitment and skills of a team, and I am blessed to work with so many talented chefs and wait staff here. "While we appreciate that our guests expect to be wowed by our meal designs, our aim is always to nourish diners with ingredients of the freshest and highest quality. This award confirms we are on the right track.’’ Located next to Peppertree Wines, Circa 1876 and The Convent boutique hotel on the same property recently joined the Escarpment Group collection of luxury properties. Escarpment Group general manager Ralf Bruegger said: "There are many fantastic restaurants in Australia and the Hunter Valley is home to some of the best, so this is a terrific achievement and a wonderful acknowledgment of the calibre of our business and the team behind it.’’

34th battalion embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Hororata (A20) on 2 May 1916

Maitland’s Passchendaele Centenary From late September 2017, there will be a number of events and exhibitions in Maitland to mark 100 Sam Apthorpe (2nd from right) & Mart Farrell (3rd from left) WWI years since enlistment Maitland Showground the Battle of Passchendaele. Fought in Flanders, the 34th Battalion (known as Maitland’s Own) was at the front of the charge on 12th October 1917. There were high casualties. Maitland Regional Museum's exhibition ‘Maitland’s Own’ is now open on Fridays to Sundays 10.00 am to 3.00 pm until 26th November at Brough House, Church Street, Maitland. Group bookings at other times are welcome; phone 49334450. This exhibition pays respect to the 34th Battalion, other WW1 veterans, WW1 medical personnel and the war effort at home. Contributions of artefacts, memorabilia, stories and photographs have been loaned by the veteran’s families and the Australian War Memorial. Much of this material has not previously been on public display.

Discover SOMETHING ANYTHING “Something Anything”, so true to its name! Why not take the scenic route if you are travelling from Sydney! Take the Peats Ridge exit at Calga and then onto George Downes Drive. 12 km along George Downes Drive hidden behind Jerry’s Cafe at Kulnura you will find Something Anything and be in for a big surprise! If you are travelling South from the Hunter Valley then you would head to Wollombi and then continue South on the historic Old Northern Road. When you come into Kulnura, Jerry’s Cafe is the first service station you come to. You will find a mixture of old and new gifts and collectables, unique homewares and art. Take a walk through time, as you see old wares and antiques mixing with new homewares. Locally made sculptures and artwork are also available. Jo Anderson owner/operator tries her utmost to find different pieces not the same as you find in any Westfields. She has also travelled overseas and imported her own beautiful pieces. Old pieces come from luck at auctions or people selling on consignment. Some old items have been revamped into stunning new pieces of interest; most of which don’t stay long in the

shop! So if you like it, make sure you get it, as you may not see it again. There is also a superb collection of cow skin rugs. Jo personally picks the most unusual and stunning skins when purchasing as she knows they are harder to get, but if you want more traditional plainer colours there is more available and she can easily find the right one for you. Something Anything was formally an old garage, which has been lovingly transformed into an inviting shop full of an eclectic mix for the home and garden. A must do visit! www.hunterimag.com.au

Hire a tinnie and spend the day exploring the Lake’s sand islands, or get your friends together and have a laugh trying out stand up paddle boarding.
