A taste of Autumn

From the Editor April Welcome to the Southern Highlands and surrounding areas as the summer heat abates, pleasant autumn days and cooler nights make for a perfect time to enjoy the delightful attractions and events that our region is known for! During April and early May, indulge your appreciation of antiques and vintage cars, participate in a truly Scottish event and join the celebration of the pumpkin and the apple. An annual ‘standout’ festival in the Southern Highlands is Brigadoon in Bundanoon. Held each year in April, the gathering of the clans means that festivities will include a street parade, massed pipe bands, dancing, games, displays and more. All to celebrate this important Scottish event! The Robertson Railway Committee will host a Vintage and Classic Car Day during April. The day will be made special with displays of restored and functioning, vintage working machinery.

The Southern Highlands Antiques and Collectables Fair is on again early in May and promises to be a draw card for collectors, both serious and novice. Join the fun at the Illawarra Fly when the Easter Bunny will create excitement for kids, handing out loads of easter eggs and playing games over the Easter School Holidays. There will be two Easter Egg hunts. Check page 15 for more details. Have a safe and happy Easter! Coincidently, 6 May is a day in our region when we celebrate the pumpkin and the apple. The Collector Village will hold its annual Pumpkin Festival with all things ‘pumpkin’, and Tallong will hold its annual event, Tallong Apple Day. Why not make a day of it and enjoy two festivals on the same day. Both events promise to be family friendly, with lots of fun, food and entertainment.

Camden, Narellan, Campbelltown Macarthur - the best of both worlds! Where can you find a vibrant city with modern delights, enjoy the tranquillity of nature reserves and historic charm, but also revel in adrenalin packed activities. Macarthur is less than an hour’s drive south-west of Sydney and includes the cities of Campbelltown and historic Camden. Throughout the region, the history of colonial settlement is reflected in the large number of heritage listed buildings; Camden Park House and Macarthur Park are fine examples of 19C architecture prevelent in the area. The Macarthur district played a significant role in the birth of the Australian Wool, Wine and Wheat industries. History books tell us that John Macarthur was responsible for our success as producers of fine Merino Wool, but historical records show that Elizabeth Macarthur, his wife, played a larger role than he did. John & Elizabeth Macarthur established convict built Belgenny Farm on part of the original 5000 acres granted to the family by Lord Camden in 1805. Today, Belgenny Farm is a major educational centre with direct links to our agricultural history. It offers specialised educational and environmental tours, giving young people and special interest groups a chance to learn about agriculture and its history in NSW. Macarthur is rich in history but also in art & culture. There is a diverse range of cultural venues including a number of small boutique art

galleries such as Struggletown Fine Arts Complex. Campbelltown Arts Centre and the Campbelltown Entertainment and Exhibition Centre are the entertainment heart of Macarthur. Macarthur is bordered by scenic hills, nature reserves and the Georges and Nepean Rivers. The beauty of the nature reserves and wildlife trails will surprise and delight with spectacular flowing streams, rock escarpments and native flora and fauna. For a superb day out, visit one of Macarthur's most interesting attractions; Australian Botanic Gardens, Mount Annan offers a lovely family day out in the midst of 416 hectares of Australian bushland. The facility includes picnic areas, a restaurant, over 10 kilometres of walking tracks and a native flora research facility and NSW Seedbank.

Innovation by Accident 14 April–12 July The Trainworks Exhibition

Railways were once the cutting edge of invention and innovation, and improvements in rail vehicle design, track and signalling have been ongoing since the first locomotive hauled the first train. Trainworks, in partnership with the NSW Rail Transport Museum and the Australian Railway Historical Society (NSW Division) is presenting a temporary exhibition detailing some of the innovative improvements designed and implemented by the railways throughout the years, including many that have come about to improve safety following accidents. The exhibition is part of the 2012 National Trust Heritage Festival and will include photographs and small railway objects and lectures.

Guest Lecturers - Sunday 22 April Join civil engineer, historian and bridge expert Bill Phippen to discover how the Hawkesbury River (railway) Bridge was built and why it was better than the original. Come on a journey with RailCorp Chief Engineer, Signals and Control Systems, Warwick Allison as he discusses how signalling has developed from innovation by accident to safety by design. Discover the wonderful innovations and inventions on the Garratt steam locomotives with renowned railway author Craig Mackey. There is no additional charge for the exhibition or the guest lectures but bookings are highly recommended. Information and bookings go to www.trainworks.com.au Ph: 02 4681 8001

Historic Berrima

Berrima & Moss Vale

www.highlandsimag.com.au

Bundanoon Berrima - a shoppers paradise Berrima is a unique, historic village offering a day tripper the most wonderful array of food and shopping experiences in a living history environment. Established as a township in 1831, Berrima is a preserved Australian, Georgian, colonial town. It is located in a picturesque valley on a bend of the Wingecarribee River. The town was laid out in the manner of an English village around a village green. The centre of the village today is a living museum, with many of the original buildings, including the gaol, still providing a unique atmosphere within the town. The area is famous for its bushranger activity in the late 1800s. Today, Berrima is a favourite day trip destination for Sydneysiders and Illawarra and Canberra residents. It offers exquisite boutique shopping, antiques and great food. Moss Vale, the Shire Capital Moss Vale is the gateway to the Hume Highway and the Illawarra and is central to Southern Highland townships and villages and to Highland attractions. The town retains an atmosphere and charm of yesteryear due to an effort to preserve and restore old public buildings and private homes. Some buildings date to the 1860s 1890s, the Old Post Office. The Moss Vale Hotel, Court House and the historic Railway Station are fine examples of the 19C architecture. Leighton Gardens, in the centre of town, is as pretty as a picture in spring and autumn with massed displays of flowers and shrubs.

Bundanoon, a "place of deep gullies". Early industries in the district included timber milling, sandstone quarrying and farming. Today Bundanoon retains many of its early 20C buildings and has a 'yesteryear' charm about it. Bundanoon has its share of interesting craft shops, art galleries, cafes, restaurants, nurseries and picnic areas. You can hire a bike, walk through nearby Morton National Park, enjoy picnic spots, native flowers and birds and see kangaroos and wallabies at dusk on the edge of town. Take a walk to "Glow Worm Glen" and discover how the Glow Worms live and glow. Bundanoon is a bushwalkers paradise with fourteen suggested walks; most have vantage points with spectacular views across the valleys. Probably the most visited lookout is the one overlooking the Grand Canyon 3km from the town centre.

Bundanoon is Brigadoon This is Scotland with a “wee” bit of “Aussie Flavour” 21st April 2012 Australia’s premier Scottish Gathering – Brigadoon – will again weave its magic, at Bundanoon Be prepared to have your blood stirred and spine tingled as the mist rolls back to the skirl of bagpipes and the village becomes Brigadoon for the day. Once again, Highlander, Celtic Rock Band, is bringing its unique sound to the gathering, this five piece group has a unique sound which has been wowing audiences of all ages with their electrifying high-energy music. The Street Parade starts at 9.30am and features some 23 Pipe Bands from all over the State. The Opening Ceremony begins at 10.30am on the Oval and the Gathering is officially opened by the Chieftain of the Day. Bundanoon, a "place of deep gullies". Bundanoon is a delightful village set close to the Morton National Park and offers scenic walks, waterfalls and stunning views nearby. It is perhaps the prettiest of the Southern Highlands villages. Bundanoon presents a charming scene with its avenue of English trees from the town approach to the main shopping strip. The area is a bushwalkers paradise with fourteen suggested walks, most have vantage points with spectacular views across the valleys. Details can be found by visiting www.bundanoon.com.au

Spectators are treated to a spectacular Massed Pipes and Drums display of highland music. With the swirling of a myriad of coloured tartans and accompanying music that stirs the heart, it makes you proud to wear the Kilt of your ancestors. At the Oval there are over 120 specialist stalls, selling everything imaginable, from Scottish pies to shortbread, from Clan memorabilia to souvenirs, with copious amounts of burgers, steaks and a variety of food promoting every nationality, even the Scots favourite “Haggis”. Everyone is made most welcome at the gathering and encouraged to participate in the “Traditional” and not so “traditional” games.

Throughout the day you can enjoy Highland and Scottish Country dance demonstrations and at irregular intervals the Pipe Bands entertain the crowds with their own special individual styles of music and display marching. Heavy Championship This year the Brigadoon Challenge will again consist of three events. 1. Heavyweight Caber 2. Tossing the weight over the bar for height & 3. Throwing the weight for distance. Using a points system the overall winner of these events wins the Brigadoon Challenge. One of the main events of the day is the display of strength by David Huxley, Australia’s world heavy events champion and his Tartan Warriors. These giants of men compete in a competition to lift the “Bundanoon Stones of Manhood”. As the day of festivities comes to an end, the crowds are once again treated to the spectacle of the Massed Bands which is followed by the lone piper and a closing address by the Chieftain.
