Garlic growing has begun! By now, garlic seeds should be in the ground and, ideally, starting to shoot. The Australian growing season runs from planting around April to harvesting in November. It’s hard work planting the seeds! Every single seed needs to be hand-planted, which means getting down and dirty in the soil. Then, we add natural fertiliser and seaweed products to get them going. The wet conditions are not great but, at this early stage, the garlic should be able to cope with the extra water. It likes to be moist, so it’s probably on the wetter side of that now. Hopefully, the drier conditions will start soon. We like to get our garlic planted in raised beds, so that the water can run off and down the troughs if it gets too much. Taste test Italian Cheese at Gourmet or Glutton! Taleggio, this classic Italian cows milk cheese has always been a firm favourite. The taste is mild, sweet and slightly acidic with a lovely soft creamy texture, it is a lot smellier than it tastes, with an aroma that is yeasty and grassy. As always, eating the rind is a matter of personal preference with washed rinds. Don’t be put off by the very rustic appearance of this cheese and the presence of light mould patches on the surface. They are a result of the natural aging process. This cheese just screams out for a rich malty brew so why not try it with one of these: 1. Murrays Brewery’s Angry Man Pale Ale- produced at Salt Ash! 2. Coopers Extra Strong Vintage Ale – A limited release brown beer. 3. Matilda Bay DogBolter- A Guinness Style Dark Lager, thick, rich, malty and intense. Not a brew for faint of heart. The conclusion is that this cheese goes extremely well with beer with the flavour intensifying. At first I thought we nailed it with Murray’s Brew but each beer we tried the flavour of this cheese just intensified.... culminating with an amazing chocolaty sensation, with the Dogbolter…Basic rule it just needs a beer strong enough to hold it own and it will be fabulous. August: Start your Veggie Garden You can grow your vegie garden in a tank bed or raised treated pine surround. If your tank has a base then you will need to put in some drainage material at the bottom followed by some Rich Organic Soil as a base for your veggies. They don’t grow well in shade, so pick a sunny spot so you can run your rows north to south, preferably with your taller plants at the rear. You will need to use a liquid fertilizer regularly to ensure maximum growth. A thick layer of mulch will also help by retaining moisture in the summer months. If unsure of the pH level in your veggie garden bed, drop in to your local nursery and get them to do a test for you. Weeds starting to appear in your lawn need to be sprayed with Bin-Die, which is suitable for most lawn varieties. Paspalum will need to be dug out if possible by hand.

The Women Of Lockerbie A play by Deborah Brevoort and directed by Janet Nelson. December 21st 1988, shortly after taking off from Heathrow airport, Pan Am 103 exploded over the small town of Lockerbie, Scotland. The town was showered with thousands of litres of blazing aviation fuel and the wreckage of the plane. The death toll was 259 International passengers from 21 countries many of whom were young American students returning home for Christmas. The play, The Women of Lockerbie begins 7 years later, during a memorial service, when a mother of one of those American students, is found roaming the hills of Lockerbie, seeking some sort of closure. She meets some of the courageous women of Lockerbie, who are fighting the U.S. government to obtain the victim’s clothing found in the plane’s wreckage. The women, determined to convert an act of hatred into an act of love, want to wash the clothes and return them to the victim’s families but the U.S. government will not release them.

Celebrating Aboriginal Culture at Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery At this time, when Aboriginal culture is being celebrated, the gallery is proud to stage two meaningful and relevant exhibitions in partnership with the community.
3 July – 21 October 2012: Stencils Past, Stencils Last reflects contemporary culture while acknowledging stencil art as an ancient traditional Aboriginal practice and includes work made by local artists in workshops run by artist in residence Mini Graff with Jason Wing. Each weekend afternoon, over an eight-week period, the gallery watched artists cutting stencils, spraying paint, and yarning about the
exhibition’s themes and directions. Multigenerational points of view were layered with technical and culturally diverse ideas to ensure the workshops moved beyond simple skills development into genuine artistic expression. The resulting exhibition is a moving and contemporary exploration of issues around Aboriginal pride and the after effects of the ‘National Apology’ in 2008, all focused through the lens of cultural and personal identity. 13 July – 26 August 2012: Northern Impressions: a celebration of contemporary printmaking invites the viewer to take a rich visual journey through the Australian landscape and into Aboriginal ‘country’, where the connection the exhibiting artists have to land is given powerful visual form through printmaking. The exhibition showcases 53 limited edition prints by artists from across the
Top End, Central Australia, Mornington and Bentinck islands and Kimberley Regions – including Timothy Cook, , Peter Newry, Rammey Ramsey, Shorty Jangala Robertson, Freddie Timms, Conrad Tipungwuti, Daniel Walbidi and Eubena Nampitjin as well as non-Indigenous artists Wayne Eager and Marina Strocchi. 2012 Hunter Valley Electric Vehicle Festival The Hunter has a long and proud history as the centre of electric vehicle and public transport manufacturing in NSW. The annual Hunter Valley Electric Vehicle Festival is about celebrating this history and taking a look at the exciting future that electric vehicles will bring. The Festival has two fun events open to the public in addition to some behind the scene industry policy workshops. The Hunter Valley EV show runs 10-4pm on Saturday the 18th August at the Newcastle Foreshore Park. The road through the park will be closed off for the day and the whole area set aside for electric vehicle demonstrations, food and entertainment. The show features a huge range of electric vehicles including the latest in electric supercars and motorcycles. Guided tours of an electric train will be happening at Newcastle railway station, and there will be heaps of activities for the whole family including ferry rides on the solar sailor, a science show on electric vehicles and test rides of segways, electric bicycles and

mobility scooters. Sunday the 26th August brings the EV Prize race day at the Cameron Park International Kart Raceway. The day incudes a demonstration race of the electric superbikes in support of the EV Prize endurance race. Vehicles in the EV prize have been under construction by High Schools, University, TAFE and privateer teams over the last six months and they will be battling it out on the twisty circuit to see who has the staying power on a controlled battery.

Wollombi in for a Wild Ride The historic township of Wollombi will be in for a wild ride on the Saturday before father’s day, 1 September with the fourth version of this exciting mountain bike event to be held in and around Wollombi. Event organiser Paul Humphreys of local sports event company H Events said the event is being held to promote health and fitness and also promote the Hunter Prostate Cancer Alliance (HPCA). “It’s really the perfect event for the venue with outstanding scenery, safe but challenging tracks and trails and most of all a welcoming community”. In its fourth year the event is expected to grow the field size substantially across the three course distances designed for novice to experienced riders. The 15km course is designed to attract the novice and family riders who are after a bit of healthy fun. The course is mostly flat with some interesting trails. The 45km course is for a more regular rider who has the fitness to climb up dome difficult terrain and also navigate some rougher tracks and trails. The 75km course is intended for riders who have trained for the event Noyce Brothers Wines
and have some experience in long distance mountain bike riding. The 45 and 75km events are also part of the National Mountain Bike Marathon Series, which includes 6 races across NSW and VIC. A range of event categories will be on offer with medals awarded and local produce up for grabs from local businesses. Staged from the back paddock of the home of the famous Dr Jurds Jungle Juice, The Wollombi Tavern, the post event activities will be as interesting as the ride. H Events will be staging FitROK, where competitors are given the opportunity to belt out some tunes or play an instrument in a low key ‘open mic’ type forum. Organisers are sure that there are plenty of people who enjoy keeping fit and also play music. “MTB riding is good for your heart and music is good for your soul, we want to encourage both.” says Humphreys. The event compound will be behind the Wollombi Tavern off 2994 Great North Rd with the 75km event starting at 8am. Valley view, Cessnock
Cessnock & Kurri Kurri Cessnock is a sub-region of the Hunter Valley, 120 kilometres north of Sydney, 40 kilometres west of Newcastle and 30 kilometres from the coast. Pastoralists commenced settling the land in the 1820’s. The township of Cessnock developed from 1850, as a service centre at the junction of the Great North Road, with branches to Black Creek (Branxton) and Maitland. During the 1860’s, land settlement was extensive between Nulkaba and Pokolbin with wheat, tobacco and grape growing, the main crops. Coal mining was the principal industrial base of the Cessnock area for over fifty years. Changes in mining, including automation and the introduction of sophisticated computerised equipment, have lead to the closure of some mines in the area and this, together with the natural ageing of the population, has resulted in a decline in population in some villages over the

last twenty years. Consequently many areas have undergone a change in character, with rural residential housing development and weekend retreats becoming popular. The Hunter Valley wine-growing area in Cessnock City is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and one of the most famous with around 4,500 acres under vine. The vineyards of Pokolbin, Mount View and Allandale, with their rich volcanic soils tended by entrepreneurial vignerons, are also the focus of a thriving and growing tourism industry. The town has a number of fine restaurants, guesthouses and galleries. The Convict Trail is a conservation project that is restoring the convictbuilt Great North Road. This is one of Australia's national historic treasures.

This exhibition focuses on the new technologies, attitudes and techniques being embraced by artists in the 21st century, as the boundaries between art mediums blur. It features 26 works by eight artists – Addison Marshall, Andrea Hylands, Jacqueline Clayton, Paul Wood, Pip McManus, Roderick Bamford, Stephen Bird and Walter Auer.
Each of these artists has very different styles. Jacqueline Clayton, for example, hand moulds life size flower replicas from ceramic made from face powder; Paul Wood combines pre-made sculptures with ceramic and glass ware from op shops; and Walter Auer creates blackened ceramic toys from discarded teddy bears. Maitland the stage for international contemporary art practice. 9 outstanding exhibitions, “PaperWorks”, will be opened by Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC,CVD, on Saturday 30th June at Maitland Regional Art Gallery. In a first for Maitland, the blockbuster exhibition “PaperWorks” presents to the City of Maitland, art from across the globe. Maitland Regional Art Gallery along with Maitland City Council is excited to present in a series of 10 separate concurrent exhibitions, new artwork from Italy, America, Australia and South Africa each showcasing artwork from leading international artists each working with art on paper including two local young emerging artists. The artists represented in the exhibition include Elizabetta Gut (Italian), Gao Ping (Chinese), William Kentridge (South African), Garry Shead (Australian), Michael Platt (USA), Lisa Kirkpatrick and Ben Soedradjit (Australian), Jean Baptiste Apuatimi (Tiwi Islands) all complimented by the Natural History Illustration students from The University of Newcastle To round off the artistic feast there will also be an exhibition featuring work currently owned by the City of Maitland, drawn from the extensive MRAG collection to which this exhibition is focused and supports. It is hoped with this exhibition MRAG and the people of the city can showcase Maitland and what it can do to a world audience.

Here you will discover the geographically blessed towns of Paterson, Vacy, Gresford and East Gresford, ringed by the ancient Moonabung Ranges and criss-crossed by the pristine waters of the two rivers that flow from the Barrington Tops. The Inglis Art Prize Friday 24th August - 5pm - 7pm. Scone Arts and Craft Centre. Open to Public - Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th August 10 - 5pm Kingdon Street Scone, NSW, Australia More than 100 artworks have been entered in the Inglis Art Prize including a number of works from overseas pieces. This year’s theme is “At the Track”. The Inglis Art Prize has a prize package of more than $18,000 and is the brainchild of deputy chairman Arthur Inglis.‘‘It is something that I thought was a worthwhile addition to the landscape to bring together art and the horse world,’’ he said.
The inaugural Inglis Art Prize in 2011 proved to be highly competitive, with many outstanding paintings, portraits and sketches. Now in it’s second year the momentum continues to build. The works of finalists for this year’s prize will be exhibited at Newmarket, in Sydney, before moving to Melbourne and finally to the nation’s horse capital, Scone, during Horse Week Festivities in mid-May. Among the high profile artists with works entered is the Melbourne based Brian Clinton who chose the champion mare Black Caviar as his subject. The prize will be judged at Newmarket on August 9 and will be exhibited 24th to 26th August at the Scone Arts and Craft Centre.
The Australian Infantry Museum The Australian Infantry Museum will be closed to visitors from the 8th June 2010 to the 31st August 2011. For further details contact the Museum Manager Captain John Land. The Royal Australian Infantry Corps Museum was established in 1911. The Royal Australian Infantry Corps Museum has undergone many changes over its 97 years. Now located within the School of Infantry, the museum tells the story of the Infantry Soldier from colonial days through to current operations. The Infantry Corps new $13m museum showcases its history, equipment and contribution to Australia’s heritage. The building was opened by CDF Gen David Hurley at Singleton on September 1, coinciding with the anniversary of the centenary of the School of Infantry's opening. Six-weeks of bad weather hampered the completion of the museum and
pushed back the opening of the galleries to late October. The site displays the Infantry Corps’ extensive collection of 5500 catalogued items, including equipment, weapons, battlefield artefacts, training documents and soldiers’ stories. Throughout the galleries and exhibitions the profile of the Australian Infantry Soldier is displayed with actual weapons, uniforms, equipment, maps, medals, pictures, stories, personal letters and videos, as used during these operations. Other significant exhibitions include a historical display of the Royal New South Wales Regiment and the Royal Australian Regiment. Closed from 8th June 2010 to the 31st August 2011. In America they have the Million Dollar Highway and Route 66 - roads of song, legend and myth. Australia has the Bylong Valley Way. The setting is the Aberdeen Highland Games July 7th and your dedicated team from iMag were there for the weekend to capture the action and spend a little time in the Upper Hunter soaking up the atmosphere. We stayed at Airlie House Motel and Restaurant for two nights and we couldn’t recommend it highly enough. From the moment we walked through the door we were made to feel very welcome by Wes, Tracy and all of the staff and the
service was outstanding. The hotel was full due to the event in Aberdeen but nothing was too much trouble and the food…! It has a welldeserved reputation for great food and we could not fault breakfast or dinner. Fresh ingredients, beautifully cooked and presented – we ate three delicious courses at dinner and thoroughly enjoyed all of it. Originally a Victorian mansion, it has a relaxing, cosy ambience, made all the more inviting by the smiles of the staff (and guests). The whole place just lends itself to settling back and taking it easy. It is comfortable and affordable. There is a sign in the bar saying “Come as guests but leave as friends”. We’ve seen this before but for the first time we think

Cruickshank Callatoota Estate The Cruickshank family interest in wine goes back to 1950 when John, as President of the Students Union at the University of Tasmania, helped entertain a famous Spaniard, Don Salvador de Madariaga, Professor of Spanish History at Oxford, who was on a lecture tour of Australia. Among other things, he advocated that Australians should drink wine instead of beer for the good of their health. John was taken by this, for those days, radical proposal. His interest was further encouraged when a few months later he made a business trip to Europe during which he became accustomed to drinking wine with his meals. John's interest in wine grew quickly and he soon became one of the pioneers of the movement to include wine in one's daily life. When he moved to Canberra in 1952, he met several like minded people with whom he founded the Canberra Wine and Food Club in 1953. The Club grew quickly, and by 1957 had its own licensed club house, probably the only wine and food club in the world with such a facility. In 1973, John purchased the homestead block of an old property called Callatoota at Wybong in the Upper Hunter Valley planting the first 4-hectare vineyard with the best available clone of Cabernet Sauvignon. In 2006 the development of a large open cut coal mine across the road from the vineyard was approved. To avoid the adverse effect on the vineyard and cellar door sales the property was sold to the mine and a larger vineyard near Denman purchased in 2007. Since then the company has built a new Winery, Cellar Door and Restaurant. Visitors are welcome every day from 9:00am to 5:00pm.
