Garlic growing has begun! By now, garlic seeds should be in the ground and, ideally, starting to shoot. The Australian growing season runs from planting around April to harvesting in November. It’s hard work planting the seeds! Every single seed needs to be hand-planted, which means getting down and dirty in the soil. Then, we add natural fertiliser and seaweed products to get them going. The wet conditions are not great but, at this early stage, the garlic should be able to cope with the extra water. It likes to be moist, so it’s probably on the wetter side of that now. Hopefully, the drier conditions will start soon. We like to get our garlic planted in raised beds, so that the water can run off and down the troughs if it gets too much. If you’re growing at home, you might want to consider doing this, too. For more info, recipes or to contact us, please visit: www.huntervalleygarlic.com.au

Taste test Italian Cheese at Gourmet or Glutton! Taleggio, this classic Italian cows milk cheese has always been a firm favourite. The taste is mild, sweet and slightly acidic with a lovely soft creamy texture, it is a lot smellier than it tastes, with an aroma that is yeasty and grassy. As always, eating the rind is a matter of personal preference with washed rinds. Don’t be put off by the very rustic appearance of this cheese and the presence of light mould patches on the surface. They are a result of the natural aging process. This cheese just screams out for a rich malty brew so why not try it with one of these: 1. Murrays Brewery’s Angry Man Pale Ale- produced at Salt Ash! 2. Coopers Extra Strong Vintage Ale – A limited release brown beer. 3. Matilda Bay DogBolter- A Guinness Style Dark Lager, thick, rich, malty and intense. Not a brew for faint of heart. The conclusion is that this cheese goes extremely well with beer with the flavour intensifying. At first I thought we nailed it with Murray’s Brew but each beer we tried the flavour of this cheese just intensified.... culminating with an amazing chocolaty sensation, with the Dogbolter…Basic rule it just needs a beer strong enough to hold it own and it will be fabulous. For more information on fabulous cheeses visit Gourmet or Glutton, Shop 2, 129 Swan Street Morpeth, Ph 02 4933 5233. Opening Hours: Wednesday - Sunday 10am - 4pm www.gourmetorglutton.com.au

August: Start your Veggie Garden You can grow your vegie garden in a tank bed or raised treated pine surround. If your tank has a base then you will need to put in some drainage material at the bottom followed by some Rich Organic Soil as a base for your veggies. They don’t grow well in shade, so pick a sunny spot so you can run your rows north to south, preferably with your taller plants at the rear. You will need to use a liquid fertilizer regularly to ensure maximum growth. A thick layer of mulch will also help by retaining moisture in the summer months. If unsure of the pH level in your veggie garden bed, drop in to your local nursery and get them to do a test for you. This will tell you whether you will need to add some lime (or dolomite) if your soil is too acid, as can often be the case near the coast. Whether you choose vegies, shrubs, trees or climbers now is the time to plant. Feed your camellias with some Azalea & Camellia food as soon as they have finished blooming. Fertilise your roses with some cow manure, or a customized fertilizer such as Amgrow Rose Fertiliser or Sudden Impact for Roses to maximize spring blooms. Weeds starting to appear in your lawn need to be sprayed with Bin-Die, which is suitable for most lawn varieties. Paspalum will need to be dug out if possible by hand.

The Women Of Lockerbie A play by Deborah Brevoort and directed by Janet Nelson. December 21st 1988, shortly after taking off from Heathrow airport, Pan Am 103 exploded over the small town of Lockerbie, Scotland. The town was showered with thousands of litres of blazing aviation fuel and the wreckage of the plane. The death toll was 259 International passengers from 21 countries many of whom were young American students returning home for Christmas. The play, The Women of Lockerbie begins 7 years later, during a memorial service, when a mother of one of those American students, is found roaming the hills of Lockerbie, seeking some sort of closure. She meets some of the courageous women of Lockerbie, who are fighting the U.S. government to obtain the victim’s clothing found in the plane’s wreckage. The women, determined to convert an act of hatred into an act of love, want to wash the clothes and return them to the victim’s families but the U.S. government will not release them.

Celebrating Aboriginal Culture at Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery At this time, when Aboriginal culture is being celebrated, the gallery is proud to stage two meaningful and relevant exhibitions in partnership with the community.
3 July – 21 October 2012: Stencils Past, Stencils Last reflects contemporary culture while acknowledging stencil art as an ancient traditional Aboriginal practice and includes work made by local artists in workshops run by artist in residence Mini Graff with Jason Wing. Each weekend afternoon, over an eight-week period, the gallery watched artists cutting stencils, spraying paint, and yarning about the
exhibition’s themes and directions. Multigenerational points of view were layered with technical and culturally diverse ideas to ensure the workshops moved beyond simple skills development into genuine artistic expression. The resulting exhibition is a moving and contemporary exploration of issues around Aboriginal pride and the after effects of the ‘National Apology’ in 2008, all focused through the lens of cultural and personal identity. 13 July – 26 August 2012: Northern Impressions: a celebration of contemporary printmaking invites the viewer to take a rich visual journey through the Australian landscape and into Aboriginal ‘country’, where the connection the exhibiting artists have to land is given powerful visual form through printmaking. The exhibition showcases 53 limited edition prints by artists from across the
Top End, Central Australia, Mornington and Bentinck islands and Kimberley Regions – including Timothy Cook, , Peter Newry, Rammey Ramsey, Shorty Jangala Robertson, Freddie Timms, Conrad Tipungwuti, Daniel Walbidi and Eubena Nampitjin as well as non-Indigenous artists Wayne Eager and Marina Strocchi. Produced with Northern Editions in Darwin since 2004, this diverse selection of the studio’s finest prints celebrates the printmaking medium, displaying its potential for collaborative virtuosity, technical excellence and luminous colour.

Business to Business TALKING BUSINESS by Brett Gleeson
Measuring your success as a businessperson There are some attributes that successful business people have in common. Their success is not attributed to good luck or the state of the economy or the industry they are in. Their success can be attributed to who they are and what they do and how they do it. Successful business people do more things at a higher standard and achieve better results. Somebody is always buying something from somebody, so how is it that successful business people manage to get people to buy from them? It usually comes down to a few simple factors.
Starting or growing a business? Start with us... Offices and Light Industrial Units available at subsidised rates. • Phone, reception and office support • Mentoring and advice on tap • Accredited Training and workshops
Successful business people: • Set higher goals and achieve them • Stretch themselves and those around them to achieve just a bit more • Measure their success by accomplishment • Look for solutions, not problems • Have a clear positive picture of what the future can be • Let their passion and enthusiasm shine • Think strategically • Work on their business as much as in the business • Are generous in their praise • Act as a coach and mentor How do you rate as a successful business person? If you rate high, say 7 or above you are doing pretty well. If you are not at 7, then its time to think about doing things differently. Remember the words of Albert Einstein....”Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting a different result.’ If your level of success as a businessperson could be higher...try doing things differently. Until next time, Brett Gleeson Centre Manager, Business Growth Centre www.mybgc.org.au

Event organiser Paul Humphreys of local sports event company H Events said the event is being held to promote health and fitness and also promote the Hunter Prostate Cancer Alliance (HPCA). “It’s really the perfect event for the venue with outstanding scenery, safe but challenging tracks and trails and most of all a welcoming community”. In its fourth year the event is expected to grow the field size substantially across the three course distances designed for novice to experienced riders. The 15km course is designed to attract the novice and family riders who are after a bit of healthy fun. The course is mostly flat with some interesting trails. The 45km course is for a more regular rider who has the fitness to climb up dome difficult terrain and also navigate some rougher tracks and trails. The 75km course is intended for riders who have trained for the event Noyce Brothers Wines
and have some experience in long distance mountain bike riding. The 45 and 75km events are also part of the National Mountain Bike Marathon Series, which includes 6 races across NSW and VIC. A range of event categories will be on offer with medals awarded and local produce up for grabs from local businesses. Staged from the back paddock of the home of the famous Dr Jurds Jungle Juice, The Wollombi Tavern, the post event activities will be as interesting as the ride. H Events will be staging FitROK, where competitors are given the opportunity to belt out some tunes or play an instrument in a low key ‘open mic’ type forum. Organisers are sure that there are plenty of people who enjoy keeping fit and also play music. “MTB riding is good for your heart and music is good for your soul, we want to encourage both.” says Humphreys. The event compound will be behind the Wollombi Tavern off 2994 Great North Rd with the 75km event starting at 8am. Event information and on line entries are available at www.wollombiwildride.net or contact H Events on 02 4934 8138.

The Mai-Wel Group Celebrity Comedy Debate We all give a hoot!
Fun with Wine If you haven’t been to Adina lately you have missed the new release Pinot Grigio. This very popular style is grown at Adina – the vines quite possibly the oldest in Australia. This fresh young wine goes perfectly with Salads, seafood based rice and pasta dishes. On the other hand this Italian variety is a wine you can drink at any time easily. With summer sure to come again you need to be ready with a bottle or two of Adina Pinot Grigio. Still in Lovedale, a visit to St Clements Estate will be well rewarded. St Clements boasts magnificent views, wood fired pizza and some excellent wines, not least of which is the Premium red. This is an unusual wine being 40% Barbera, 40% Nebbioli and 20% Grenache. Sitting outside St Clements with a great red and wood fired pizza – that’s a pleasant day or night, you might need to rug up if you choose to sit outside. The view is well worth it though. Enjoy the crisp, clear Winter days in the Hunter Valley. Take the time to discover Lovedale – in the next issue I will tell you about a hidden treat you will simply die for! “Wine is the drink of Gods milk for babies and water for beasts.”
Maitland’s favourite fun evening is back! The 8th annual Mai-Wel Celebrity Comedy Debate is Saturday, 11th August and will see celebrities team up to debate the topic: “Reality TV Is Better than Reality”. Arguing the affirmative – that Reality TV is Better than Reality – will be reality show cooking star Alvin Quah, 1233 ABC Newcastle Radio personality Aaron Kearney, and humourist and author Kerry Cue. Arguing the negative – that Reality TV is NOT Better than Reality – will be Celebrity Apprentice contender and comedienne, Fiona O’Loughlin, President of the Mai-Wel Board of Directors Mr Graham Burns, and the Old George and Dragon’s Executive Chef, Gavin Forman. The audience will also have a chance to participate in the evening and go head to head in the annual Comedy Debate Auction with major prizes up for grabs. While The Mai-Wel Group’s Celebrity Comedy Debate is a light-hearted event, its purpose is to raise funding and community awareness of The MaiWel Group. Since its inception in 2005, the event has made numerous projects possible, such as the recently completed Mai-Wel Community Programs Centre in Telarah. Tickets are just $70 each. To purchase, contact The Mai-Wel Group on 4932 8599, or visit www.maiwel.com.au.

James Estate Wines At James Estate, we enjoy the simple life…smiles, laughs, friends and fresh air…wine is a bonus! James Estate continues a tradition started some 30 years ago when vineyard and winery practices were commenced on the estate property. The vineyard is situated in the Upper Hunter Valley NSW, 18km from Denman, a renowned quality vineyard area. The Upper Hunter wine region has soils that range from sandy loams to heavy clays on deep sandstone bedrock. A vast range of microclimates are also experienced creating distinctions between alluvial river flats, valley floors and sloping hillsides. This gives it a character distinct from the more well travelled Lower Hunter regions of Pokolbin and Lovedale. Surrounded by the Wollemi National Park, James Estate enjoys an enviable position with sweeping views of the
Goulburn River from our spacious cellar door sales and tasting area. The property and winery cover 1560 acres with planting capacity for 850 acres. If the Lower Hunter is the civilized, tourist centre of the region, the Upper Hunter is the frontier; a little less travelled and also a little wilder. Here wedge tailed eagles soar over our estate on Bylong Valley Way. It's a great part of the world and a great wine region to visit.
Find James Estate at 951 Bylong Valley Way, Baerami in the Upper Hunter or visit the cellar door in Pokolbin at 1210 Hermitage Road, Pokolbin For more information on James Estate, find them on Facebook, follow them on Twitter or see the website www.jamesestatewines.com.au 2012 Harvest

Valley view, Cessnock
Cessnock & Kurri Kurri Cessnock is a sub-region of the Hunter Valley, 120 kilometres north of Sydney, 40 kilometres west of Newcastle and 30 kilometres from the coast. Pastoralists commenced settling the land in the 1820’s. The township of Cessnock developed from 1850, as a service centre at the junction of the Great North Road, with branches to Black Creek (Branxton) and Maitland. During the 1860’s, land settlement was extensive between Nulkaba and Pokolbin with wheat, tobacco and grape growing, the main crops. Coal mining was the principal industrial base of the Cessnock area for over fifty years. Changes in mining, including automation and the introduction of sophisticated computerised equipment, have lead to the closure of some mines in the area and this, together with the natural ageing of the population, has resulted in a decline in population in some villages over the
last twenty years. Consequently many areas have undergone a change in character, with rural residential housing development and weekend retreats becoming popular. The Hunter Valley wine-growing area in Cessnock City is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and one of the most famous with around 4,500 acres under vine. The vineyards of Pokolbin, Mount View and Allandale, with their rich volcanic soils tended by entrepreneurial vignerons, are also the focus of a thriving and growing tourism industry. The town has a number of fine restaurants, guesthouses and galleries. The Convict Trail is a conservation project that is restoring the convictbuilt Great North Road. This is one of Australia's national historic treasures.

Morpeth is an area of outstanding natural beauty and offers a great experience for everyone who enjoys the pleasure of a walk in a country village with the opportunity of shopping and dining in unique style. It's a little place not far from Maitland, with a history to make us all proud. Morpeth was once upon a time a busy river port and frontier town established during the late 1820's. The Heritage buildings and Bond Stores stand in testament indeed, Morpeth was the largest inland seaport of the new Australian colony and commercial icons Brambles, Simsmetal, Arnotts and Soul's Pharmacy were born in this magnificent place. Set along the banks of the Hunter River, the drive to Morpeth is an added attraction. The green fields stretch for miles and the weeping willows sway in the breeze. It is very hard to find a place to match our beautiful Morpeth.
As you stroll through the cobblestoned village you will notice that Morpeth has everything from art galleries to specialty shops to a Trading Post and even a Bazaar. Local artisans and craftspeople have their wares for sale throughout the town. You will have the opportunity to taste locally made fudge and sip ginger beer. Fine fashion, teddy bears, art and craft, tempting treats to take home, beautiful jewellery, home furnishings and objects of interest, we promise that you will find them in Morpeth. A range of restaurants and cafes offer al fresco dining, river views, heritage surroundings and a cosmopolitan standard of menu. Grab a bottle of the finest wine available for tasting from the local wine cellar then select your café, even the most finicky of foodies will find something to their liking. Tocal Homestead
The Allyn & Paterson River Valley Tocal - Paterson - Vacy - East Gresford - Gresford There is a lot on offer for visitors to the Allyn & Paterson River Valley, just two and a half hours’ drive from Sydney, an hour from Newcastle and where Dr Henry Lindeman planted his first grape vines in 1843. Here you will discover the geographically blessed towns of Paterson, Vacy, Gresford and East Gresford, ringed by the ancient Moonabung Ranges and criss-crossed by the pristine waters of the two rivers that flow from the Barrington Tops. First stop could be historic Tocal Homestead for tales of the olden days of bushrangers, graziers, and other characters who inhabited one of the greatest Australian cattle and horse studs of its time. Have a look at the rare architect-designed barn built around 1867, and the gracious Colonial Georgian country house. Tocal Homestead is a very popular venue for
weddings and milestone celebrations. Paterson has inspired many artists to pick up a brush to try to capture this picturesque Australian country town on canvas. Take the time to look at the many fine old homes, grand commercial buildings, museums, art gallery, pubs, cafes, parks and shops that contribute to Paterson’s unique style. 9km north of Paterson is Vacy, with rugged Mt George to the west. It is well worth a visit to the café, hotel, arts & crafts shop and general store for a taste of country hospitality, great food and quirky crafts. Travel over the Vacy bridge, circa 1898, to Bunna Bunoo olive grove and gift shop. You can see the roof tops of the cabins and lodges such as Banjos Bushland Retreat and Cabins in the Clouds on Mt George, perfect destinations for weekend getaways or a longer stay.
The small towns of Gresford and East Gresford are the gateway to Lostock Dam, Mt Allyn and the Chichester State Forest to the north. Take the Allyn River Road drive past homesteads set among rolling green hills and granite outcrops. Visit Clevedon craft shop, Natural Furniture Works, the Beatty Hotel and Camyr Allyn winery. History lovers will enjoy a drive to St Anne’s Anglican Church and suspension bridge, and St Mary’s on Allyn at Allynbrook. The story of edna wears... It was a strong creative urge and a growing mountain of fabrics which sparked the beginning of edna wears ... With a love of all things vintage a label inspired by styles from the past seemed natural and so a range of one-off and limited edition items including handbags, belts, purses, brooches, hair accessories and items of clothing emerged. The very vintage sounding name ‘Edna’ seemed perfect when I discovered it was Hebrew for ‘rejuvenation’ You can purchase edna wears products in the Singeton VIC shop.

The Inglis Art Prize Friday 24th August - 5pm - 7pm. Scone Arts and Craft Centre. Open to Public - Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th August 10 - 5pm Kingdon Street Scone, NSW, Australia More than 100 artworks have been entered in the Inglis Art Prize including a number of works from overseas pieces. This year’s theme is “At the Track”. The Inglis Art Prize has a prize package of more than $18,000 and is the brainchild of deputy chairman Arthur Inglis.‘‘It is something that I thought was a worthwhile addition to the landscape to bring together art and the horse world,’’ he said.
The inaugural Inglis Art Prize in 2011 proved to be highly competitive, with many outstanding paintings, portraits and sketches. Now in it’s second year the momentum continues to build. The works of finalists for this year’s prize will be exhibited at Newmarket, in Sydney, before moving to Melbourne and finally to the nation’s horse capital, Scone, during Horse Week Festivities in mid-May. Among the high profile artists with works entered is the Melbourne based Brian Clinton who chose the champion mare Black Caviar as his subject. The prize will be judged at Newmarket on August 9 and will be exhibited 24th to 26th August at the Scone Arts and Craft Centre.
The Australian Infantry Museum The Australian Infantry Museum will be closed to visitors from the 8th June 2010 to the 31st August 2011. For further details contact the Museum Manager Captain John Land. The Royal Australian Infantry Corps Museum was established in 1911. The Royal Australian Infantry Corps Museum has undergone many changes over its 97 years. Now located within the School of Infantry, the museum tells the story of the Infantry Soldier from colonial days through to current operations. The Infantry Corps new $13m museum showcases its history, equipment and contribution to Australia’s heritage. The building was opened by CDF Gen David Hurley at Singleton on September 1, coinciding with the anniversary of the centenary of the School of Infantry's opening. Six-weeks of bad weather hampered the completion of the museum and
pushed back the opening of the galleries to late October. The site displays the Infantry Corps’ extensive collection of 5500 catalogued items, including equipment, weapons, battlefield artefacts, training documents and soldiers’ stories. Throughout the galleries and exhibitions the profile of the Australian Infantry Soldier is displayed with actual weapons, uniforms, equipment, maps, medals, pictures, stories, personal letters and videos, as used during these operations. Other significant exhibitions include a historical display of the Royal New South Wales Regiment and the Royal Australian Regiment. Closed from 8th June 2010 to the 31st August 2011. The setting is the Aberdeen Highland Games July 7th and your dedicated team from iMag were there for the weekend to capture the action and spend a little time in the Upper Hunter soaking up the atmosphere. We stayed at Airlie House Motel and Restaurant for two nights and we couldn’t recommend it highly enough. From the moment we walked through the door we were made to feel very welcome by Wes, Tracy and all of the staff and the
service was outstanding. The hotel was full due to the event in Aberdeen but nothing was too much trouble and the food…! It has a welldeserved reputation for great food and we could not fault breakfast or dinner. Fresh ingredients, beautifully cooked and presented – we ate three delicious courses at dinner and thoroughly enjoyed all of it. Originally a Victorian mansion, it has a relaxing, cosy ambience, made all the more inviting by the smiles of the staff (and guests). The whole place just lends itself to settling back and taking it easy. It is comfortable and affordable. There is a sign in the bar saying “Come as guests but leave as friends”. Cruickshank Callatoota Estate The Cruickshank family interest in wine goes back to 1950 when John, as President of the Students Union at the University of Tasmania, helped entertain a famous Spaniard, Don Salvador de Madariaga, Professor of Spanish History at Oxford, who was on a lecture tour of Australia. Among other things, he advocated that Australians should drink wine instead of beer for the good of their health. John was taken by this, for those days, radical proposal. His interest was further encouraged when a few months later he made a business trip to Europe during which he became accustomed to drinking wine with his meals. John's interest in wine grew quickly and he soon became one of the pioneers of the movement to include wine in one's daily life. When he moved to Canberra in 1952, he met several like minded people with whom he founded the Canberra Wine and Food Club in 1953. The Club grew quickly, and by 1957 had its own licensed club house, probably the only wine and food club in the world with such a facility. In 1973, John purchased the homestead block of an old property called Callatoota at Wybong in the Upper Hunter Valley planting the first 4-hectare vineyard with the best available clone of Cabernet Sauvignon. In 2006 the development of a large open cut coal mine across the road from the vineyard was approved. To avoid the adverse effect on the vineyard and cellar door sales the property was sold to the mine and a larger vineyard near Denman purchased in 2007. Since then the company has built a new Winery, Cellar Door and Restaurant. Visitors are welcome every day from 9:00am to 5:00pm.
