‘We believe everyone has the right to access good, clean and fair food’ Slow Food is an international non-profit association formed in 1989 as a response to the standardising effects of fast food and the ‘fast life’. There are now thousands of members in over 100 countries, divided into local focus groups called convivia, of which Slow Food Blue Mountains is just one. Three interconnecting principles define Slow Food: GOOD - A fresh and flavoursome seasonal diet that satisfies the senses and is part of our local culture. CLEAN - Produced in harmony with the environment and human health. FAIR - Accessible prices for consumers and fair conditions and pay for small-scale producers. Hills & Hawkesbury In March 1788, Governor Arthur Phillip set off to find more suitable land for agriculture and travelled up the Hawkesbury River as far as Dangar Island. He returned the following year and navigated the river to a point upstream of Windsor. Governor Phillip and his party reached this area by boat on 6th July 1789 and named it

Green Hills. He was impressed with its farming potential and quickly arranged for food production to begin in order to relieve the shortages in Port Jackson. Governor Macquarie named the settlement Windsor in 1810. This was the start of the Hawkesbury Hills District, still a rich production area for food and a wonderful playground. Visit

Wait, weep & be worthy: exhibition at Hawkesbury Regional Gallery looks at women and the ‘home front’ In 1914, journalist Cora Harris wrote: ‘What men suffer through war is written in histories…but what women suffer is never written.’ For gallery Director, Diana Robson, this provided a challenge worth rising to. According to Diana, while the first year of the ANZAC commemorations inevitably focused on the men who fought and died in the trenches, the second year of the centenary offers a chance to turn people’s attention to the untold stories and contribution of women on the home front. ‘We want to make a meaningful
contribution to the anniversary by providing a different perspective on the conflict and its effects on the people left behind,’ she said. We have asked contemporary artists to respond to the theme, and we will also be displaying original historical items that tell of women’s experiences, both in supporting the troops abroad and in keeping the home fires burning.’ The exhibition will feature a number of contemporary Australian artists as well as original art, photos and film footage, posters, objects and clothing from WW1 collections. Parramatta was founded in 1788 by Governor Arthur Phillip as a western outlying farm colony of Sydney. Initially it was called Rose Hill and was renamed Parramatta, an Aboriginal word meaning “head of waters,” or “the place where eels lie down”, the year after it was proclaimed a town in 1790. It was incorporated as a municipality in 1861, became a city in 1938 and was expanded in 1948, 1959, and 1972 by the inclusion of surrounding centres.
Port Jackson harbour. The Parramatta River Cat ferry takes passengers from Parramatta to Sydney along the River. The River Cat is a scenic and relaxing way to explore the waterways . Ferries are cheap and certainly a fast and pleasant way to travel all over Sydney. There are many pleasant places to eat, shop and even go to the theatre along the Parramatta River, not to mention stroll, fish or simply relax. Parramatta is famous for a wide variety of retail and dining options!

SHAVE OFF HER HAIR !
Convict women who lived in the Female Factory at Parramatta were expected to behave. If not, harsh punishment was handed out – made to wear the cap of shame, solitary confinement or, worst of all, having her head shaved and losing her crowning glory. You will gain inside knowledge of the Female Factory when taking a guided tour with Topp Tours. This lively ‘Herstory’ exhibition and informative 3-hour mini-bus tour visits the historic sites and brings to life the colonial times. You will see where the convict women lived and worked – the ‘Factory above the Gaol’ site, the hospital and Matron’s house of 1818, the 1830 walls, original clock and third class women’s sleeping quarters. What happened to their children? How could a woman gain her freedom? What is oakum picking? All will be revealed. Clock tower – Female Factory Site And the brilliant ‘Herstory’ exhibition in Hambledon Cottage House Museum is included in this tour. Here you can meet ‘face to face’ some of the spirited women of the Parramatta Female Factory including the mother of famous bushranger Ben Hall. Do not delay, make a booking today. In the foyer of some of the new buildings you will see glass around what was discovered and in the Justice Precinct you will find the remains of the earliest convict hospitals on display. At the top of Boddington hill, turn left into Tableland Road then left into Queen Elizabeth Drive. Take the left hand fork at the end for a 10 km drive to one of the most remote and beautiful picnic grounds in the Blue Mountains, Ingar Picnic Ground. Collaborative Photographic Exhibition Well Katoomba’s newest Art Gallery is at it again – with yet another fabulous exhibition – this time by local Blue Mountains and Sydney based Photographic Artists. Gallery ONE88 is one of the Associated Exhibitors in this year’s international HeadOn Photo Festival which is held over the month of May. GalleryONE88 will present in one space three Sydney A-listed photo-artists, Edmond Thommen, Chris Meredith, and Len Metcalf and their Exhibition titled “3+1” - an exhibition of images from an art-nude photoshoot of one model. The shoot took place on a sunny Monday
morning in December 2015 near Cronulla, with an internationally acclaimed fine-art model. The three took turns to direct the model and create their work - sometimes calling on each other to assist or advise on a particular set-up. The exhibition reveals that the three photographers represent their subject in vastly different ways. The images cover the full spectrum of styles from monochrome fine-art through to contemporary almost abstract interpretations of the female form. In its other space, GalleryONE88 will present a collaborative exhibition of Continued on page 20

Wallerawang/Portland In 1863 Thomas Murray selected land that would later become the site of Portland and he established the first lime kiln on the corner of Lime and Villiers Streets. Both Portland and Wallerawang are blessed with two historic public houses, schools, fascinating historic buildings, lakes and fishing streams, delightful little stores and friendly people. Portland is famous as the Town that built Sydney due to its Cement works and Wallerawang is famous for its Black Gold (coal) associations with Delta electricity. Portland’s Crystal Theatre hosts cinema as well as art shows and is famous for its street fairs. Portland’s big swimming pool has celebrated 50 years and Wallerawang’s historic old station’s heritage redevelopment has led to a florist, lolly shop, café and art gallery.
