In March 1788, Governor Arthur Phillip set off to find more suitable land for agriculture and travelled up the Hawkesbury River as far as Dangar Island. He returned the following year and navigated the river to a point upstream of Windsor. Governor Phillip and his party reached this area by boat on 6th July 1789 and named it Green Hills. He was impressed with its farming potential and quickly arranged for food production to begin in order to relieve the shortages in Port Jackson. Governor Macquarie named the settlement Windsor in 1810. This was the start of the Hawkesbury Hills District, still a rich production area for food and a wonderful playground. Visit the Information Centres throughout the Hills Hawkesbury area for more information. Surrounded by 10 National parks an hour’s drive from Sydney, the area provides a wide range of recreational pursuits. Encircled by noteworthy national
parks - Dharug to the north and east, Yengo to the north-west, Cattai to the west, and Marramarra to the south Wisemans Ferry is a rustic village on one of the country's most famous waterways.

New exhibition takes a long look at the book On show till 30 October at Hawkesbury Regional Gallery in Windsor is Choose Your Own Adventure, which brings together a diverse group of artists to investigate the medium and meaning of contemporary book arts, including the book as object, as media, and as a site of resistance. The exhibition has four components: Shaun Tan; The Art of Story Discovering the Lost Thing- Book to Film – in which we see how a popular children’s book The Lost Thing was created and then became an Oscar-winning film. Visitors will see the work behind the work, including the original painted and collaged illustrations for the book, the character sketches, storyboards and the final short animation. Kylie Stillman, Local Branch, an installation specially created for this
exhibition using books ‘weeded’ from the Hawkesbury Library collection. The work features more than 500 books that have been intricately carved, examining the lifecycle of both trees and books. Since her time as a student Stillman has enjoyed the challenge of finding materials and pigments from the ‘real world’ to create an artwork, and is best known for her book sculptures and woodcarvings.
A display of artist’s books from the Manly Library collection: Manly Library’s biennial Artist’s Book Award has provided an opportunity to develop a significant collection while contributing to the development and awareness of this energetic emerging contemporary art form. Entries are received from around the world, marking this as a globally recognized event.

Hawkesbury Art Fair returns for another big year The third Hawkesbury Regional Gallery Art Fair will be held at in the Gallery 4 November – 4 December, and, according to Gallery Director, Diana Robson, it will be a celebration of local creative activity not to be missed. ‘The Art Fair is when the gallery becomes a showcase for the diversity of creative people in this beautiful region’ said Diana. ‘It’s also an opportunity for local artists to sell their work, and for residents and visitors to the area to buy original art from the
region’s best-known and accomplished artists.’ As usual, the fair will feature the best traditional and contemporary artists, designers, crafters and jewellers living and working in the Hawkesbury, as well as selected visiting artists from Penrith and Blue Mountains. Organisations represented at the fair include Hawkesbury Camera Club, Macquarie Towns Art Society, Hawkesbury Community Artists, The Ferry Artists, Hawkesbury Printmakers,
Hawkesbury Artists & Artisans Trail, and Piggery Lane Studios & Gallery.

Dunedoo Dunedoo is a rural community surrounded by undulating hills and wide valleys, on the Golden Highway, 90 km east of Dubbo, 20 km west of Singleton, and 80 km north of Mudgee, NSW. It is the perfect spot for a picturesque stopover because of its proximity to Mudgee, Dubbo and Warrumbungle National Park. Contact a Visitor Information Centre for assistance planning your trip to Dunedoo. Many local families have worked on
the land around Dunedoo since white people first settled there in the 19th Century. Prior to this, the district was home to the Wiradjuri and Kamilaroi nations, who gave it its name, meaning “Place of the black swan”. Several sites of historical interest are close to the town. When you visit Dunedoo, take advantage of the beautiful parks on the northern side of Bolaro Street, offering well-kept amenities and an enclosed
children’s playground. Across the road there are several eat in or take away outlets. Spend time browsing the great collection of early Australian furniture and country antiques in the antique shop or uncovering mining, military and family history treasures in the Dunedoo Historical Museum. If you plan to stay, there is a wide range of accommodation ranging from Camping, Pub Stay, a motel and bed & breakfast accommodation.
Dunedoo Tunes on the Turf
This year Tunes on the Turf kicks off on Saturday 12 November at 12 noon and powers through to midnight, with these gigs: One Proud Monkey - Dave’s Way and the Cotton Thieves - Bitter Sweethearts - Haleigh Hing - Civil Hands - Paulie Housier - Mick Picton - Richard Perso (back by popular demand) - Legless Pedestrians BUSKERS are invited to perform @ the Made ‘n’ Grown Markets in Dunedoo Park on Saturday 12th 8 am-12 noon. No power!! Since its inception, many local businesses have made significant contributions to the success of TOTT. These include Watsons Transport - Dunedoo Swan Motel - S&S Meats Dunedoo Lions Club - Monster Signs -Essential Energy - Coates Hire Back in 2012 a few locals were sitting around at the Sports Club in Dunedoo (Sunday Session!!) thinking how great it would be to have live music in Dunedoo. As usual, you get talking and the English teacher at the time, Don Edwards, stepped up and did a few Sunday arvos at the club. From there, talk started about how many locals we have who are talented in some (musical) way and why don’t we try and make a day of it. In early 2012 a few people came up with the name Tunes on the Turf (TOTT) and so the phone calls started to try and convince “acts” they were good enough to perform. As locals came on board, the music teacher at the time, Brent Budden, organised Dunedoo and Coolah Central Schools’ rock bands to perform and so we had the beginnings of Tunes. Following on from Brent, Kyle Wells continued to assist. We are now in the process of branching out, sourcing acts from our wider music community. Each year we have been lucky with the weather, except 2016 where a massive downpour made things a bit wet but did little to dampen the spirits of festival goers! The crowd numbers have grown each year with some familiar faces amongst many new faces. The word is TOTT is an event not to be missed on the Central West calendar. TOTT is “booked in” for the SECOND weekend in November every year at the Dunedoo Sports Club and will go ahead regardless of the weather. There will be hot food and cool drinks for our visitors to indulge. Families are welcome with a playground for the kids to share and much more. Courtesy buses will be available from Leadville, Tucklan, Digilah, Cobbora and Mendooran. To arrange pick-up times and venues please contact Dunedoo Sports Club after 4pm 63751018 FREE CAMPING AVAILABLE, first in best dressed! Parramatta was founded in 1788 by Governor Arthur Phillip as a western outlying farm colony of Sydney. Initially it was called Rose Hill and was renamed Parramatta, an Aboriginal word meaning “head of waters,” or “the place where eels lie down”, the year after it was proclaimed a town in 1790. It was incorporated as a municipality in 1861, became a city in 1938 and was expanded in 1948, 1959, and 1972 by the inclusion of surrounding centres.

Sassafras Gully is an excellent walk from Springwood Station. Cross the pedestrian crossing and turn right, continue past the shops. Carry on along Macquarie Road and turn left onto Homedale Street. At the bottom of Homedale Street, turn right onto Valley Road, and then left onto Sassafras Gully Road. Continue to the bottom of Sassafras Gully Road, follow along the fence of house number 18 to the start of the walk. Lost Bear Gallery is proud to present an exhibition of new works by glass artist Kayo Yokoyama together with works on paper by David Middlebrook, starting 5 November. Kayo Yokoyama was born in Japan and emigrated to Australia in 1997. Now based at Blackheath, her work centres around the theme of home. Previous work has explored the search for a physical home across cultures, later evolving to the search for a home not physical, but internal, unaffected by location. Delicately etched trees are a repeated symbolic motif that hint at the universal comfort of nature even in unfamiliar places. As her confidence with her craft grows, her forms and motifs have expanded, and this exhibition sees numerous new explorations. The moon and waterfalls are recent motifs, representing nature’s beauty and companionship. Elongated domes, sometimes harbouring other, smaller domes within them, speak of sanctuary and containment, as do the forms with old ships etched onto them. David Middlebrook’s career spans 25 years, with over 30 solo exhibitions and works in numerous public collections. Like Yokoyama, Middlebrook’s landscape works have a pervasive theme, revolving around the concept of the horizon. Yet unlike the metaphorical homelands of Yokoyama, his work concerns the physical, Australian landscape. The horizon line is the simple, but not simplistic, visual element through which he explores the essence and narrative of the landscape. His beautiful, meditative works come about through a unique approach that emphasises mark making. Lost Bear Gallery is a leading destination for contemporary art in the Blue Mountains. This exhibition can be viewed daily from 10-5 at 98 Lurline Street, Katoomba. Visit lostbeargallery.com.au

Hydro Majestic looks west
Medlow Bath to Mt Victoria Recent developments in these areas establish this as a centre with attractions to rival those that have made Leura to Katoomba so renowned. Reopening of the Hydro Majestic in November 2014 following upgrades, redevelopment of Redleaf Resort, the opening of Parklands and many other accommodation improvements in the area are attracting new visitors. Combined with more places
to eat, galleries and a wide variety of new businesses, we now have a newly evolving centre, drawing locals and visitors into a thriving new cosmopolitan area to spend time; to return to, seeking new experiences.
Blackheath
Blackheath at 1065m abve sea level is 114 km from Sydney and most famous for its November Rhododendron Festival. The Blackheath Rhododendron Gardens are in Baccante Street. The town’s shopping centre has a delightfully relaxed village atmosphere. Blackheath is filled with natural beauty and there are many breathtaking views and bush walks to experience. Blackheath is full of colonial history. The first building in Blackheath was "The Scotch Thistle Inn" erected by Andrew Gardner in 1831. The Inn was visited by the renowned scientist Charles Darwin in 1836. The site for "The Scotch Thistle Inn" was located slightly south of the present Gardners Inn Hotel. On the outside of the famous Victory Theatre antique centre is one of the town’s proudest displays, a colourful mural designed by local artist Jenny Kee and painted in 1985 by members of the local community on behalf of the Blackheath Area Neighbourhood Centre. It has been recently refurbished by this proud community.

Wallerawang/Portland In 1863 Thomas Murray selected land that would later become the site of Portland and he established the first lime kiln on the corner of Lime and Villiers Streets. Both Portland and Wallerawang are blessed with two historic public houses, schools, fascinating historic buildings, lakes and fishing streams, delightful little stores and friendly people. Portland is famous as the Town that built Sydney due to its Cement works and Wallerawang is famous for its Black Gold (coal) associations with Delta electricity. Portland’s Crystal Theatre hosts cinema as well as art shows and is famous for its street fairs. Portland’s big swimming pool has celebrated 50 years and Wallerawang’s historic old station’s heritage redevelopment has led to a florist, lolly shop, café and art gallery.

Walking on the Wild Side Second Koala joey emerges Keepers at Taronga Western Plains Zoo have spotted a second Koala joey to emerge from its mother’s pouch this breeding season. Milawa, meaning Murray River in Wiradjuri language, is a female joey and is approximately six months old. She is the first joey for mother, Lemon who is showing all the right maternal behaviours to be a caring and nurturing mother. “We generally start to see the Koala joeys emerge at around five to six months, and from this time they remain visible, usually clinging to their mother’s front before moving onto their back as they grow and develop,” said Koala keeper, Denyell Woodhouse. “We are really happy with the progress both mother and joey are displaying, with Milawa starting to sample leaves. She is usually quite visible clinging to the front of Lemon,” said Denyell. Koala joeys generally stay with their mother until approximately 12 months of age, when they start to become more independent, exploring their environment on their own and in the wild, finding their own home range.
The Aussie Walkthrough exhibit has also had two Red-necked Wallaby joeys emerge from their mother’s pouches. They are approximately seven months old but are still staying close by their mother’s sides. Another Koala joey is also expected to emerge in the coming month. “A great time to see the new arrivals in this area is at the daily keeper talk at 2:30pm,” said Denyell.
