Across the month, an array of arts, cultural, musical and community-based events will fill our theatres, venues and parks! Start your April with the melodic sounds of the Central Coast Symphony Orchestra as they perform Mozart and Schumann on April 1st at Laycock Street Theatre. After the Easter weekend, some of Australia’s best young dance talent will perform as part of the Australian Youth Dance Festival. Programs will take place both at Laycock and in the Mt Penang Precinct at Kariong. Art buffs will delight in the annual Sculpture on the Greens, held from April 14 right through til the end of May at Wyong’s Kooindah Waters Golf Club. The 5 Lands Art Trail enters its fourth month, with 20-plus artists studios open throughout the region on the third weekend of the month (April 21 and 22). Tune into the northern region of the Coast in April! Kooindah Waters at Wyong hosts its annual Family Fun Day on April 1, Toukley’s Wet Wild and Rhythm showcases everything from extreme sports to drumming and more on April

Traditional ANZAC Day services and Gosford Race Club’s annual ANZAC Day Race Meet will take place on April 25 amongst a range of other meets throughout the month both at Gosford and Wyong Clubs.

Gosford City Playground Strategy Gosford City Council is currently in the midst of implementing an updated Playground Strategy. This strategy provides a plan for the provision of new and updated playgrounds across the Gosford City Council area until 2025. The primary aim of the strategy is to develop, redevelop and maintain playgrounds in order to meet the needs of our community. Playgrounds and play spaces are an integral part of any community, providing ongoing opportunities for play. Play is an essential part of the life of children and of adults. It has a direct effect on our physical, mental, emotional and social well-being. Play also aids the development of the imagination, which is integral in helping us in defining who we are and who we want to be.

While children are arguably the largest users of playgrounds, modern playgrounds are developed to offer more than play equipment for young children. The areas across the Gosford City Council provide space for picnics and other social gatherings, rest points along walkways and cycleways, and locations to enjoy the surrounding environment and views. You will continue to notice changes in the parks and play spaces over the coming months and years. Some outdated equipment will be removed allowing funds to be allocated towards the renewal and maintenance of other areas. We hope that our visitors and residents alike will continue to enjoy and make the most of the parks and play spaces strategically placed throughout the Gosford City Council area. For more information, please go to the My Gosford Playground app: www.playgrounds.mygosford .com .au

Fish keeping made easy... with a little help from Penrose

Seacoast Fishing What's happening this month... Buy the freshest seafood on the coast. Our commercial fishing business has been operating from Kincumber for the past 8 years and we have the freshest fish in town. Straight from the boat to our shop, which is located 400mtrs from the scenic road roundabout towards Macmasters Beach. Our catch consists of Snapper, Ocean Jackets, Bream trevally, mullet (which is the catch of the month!) and Lobsters. We also have local Oysters, school prawns and a variety of frozen products. As our weather cools and the westly winds start, mullet season begins for us April and May, this happens each year when the mullet schools up in big patches coming out of our estuaries and they travel to the sea, this is where our licensed boys use the hauling nets to catch some, most of the mullet schools head straight out to sea, but some travel along the coastline for a while, these are the fish the boys try to catch. Mullet has the best omega 3 oil content, which is so good for us, flavour is strong, but a great fish to eat (our favourite). Fresh is Best! We are open thurs, fridays 12.30 to 6.00pm and saturday 9 to 6.00pm. Please call us anytime for updated catch info on : 43686160 Patanga Street, Kincumber

Autumn is the perfect time for salads and what better addition to a salad than Little Creek Cheese’s very own Salad Cheese range. What is Salad Cheese? It is made the same as a Fetta but using only Cows milk. Salad Cheese comes in 4 wonderful marinated flavours, Italian, Dill and Garlic, Sundried Tomato and the newest one in the range Chilli and Basil. Impress your friends at your next BBQ with a salad complete with Salad Cheese. Not into salad? Then they are also perfect on top of a Pizza. Why not try it on top of mini pizzas. To make 4, use 2 English Muffin, cut in half as the base. Spread each half with small amount of Little Creek Cheeses Sundried Tomato Fromage, add toppings e.g. ham, cherry tomatoes and then top with some of the Salad Cheese. Place under the grill and cook till melted. It’s a quick snack and the kids will love it. If you cannot make it out to the factory at The Old Wyong Milk Factory along Alison Rd, you can purchase Little Creek Cheese from Peters Deli at Erina Fair and also from Caesars Coffee Shop in Erina. Enjoy. www.centralcoastimag.com.au

Our History Wyong Museum & Historical Society Some snippets from history – gleaned from various newspapers over the years... 19 August 1930. The “Orama” left Sydney on Saturday for London with 2300 cases of eggs. The “Port Victor” loaded 1750 cases on Monday, while today the “Mooltan” will lift 2000 cases. This means that in four days consignments totalling 2,000,000 eggs have been sent to London from Sydney. (What were the English chooks doing? Or not, as the case may be.)

1860's Violin Amongst the musical instruments in BWHS Museum is an old violin which has quite an interesting history. Its maker was Jerome Thibouville-Lamy of Mirecort, France and it is believed to be from about 1860. It belonged to Thomas Job Barnett whose brother David won it in a horse race in Bourke in 1866. David gave it to his 6 years old brother Thomas who taught himself to play. As a young man Thomas played his violin at dances in the Quirindi district. It was donated to our Society in 1969 and has been on display since then. We had a visit in 2005 from Tom Barnett's great-granddaughter and her family from Newcastle and they were naturally delighted to see the violin on display and in good condition. Henry Kendall Cottage West Gosford

4 August 1939 Doesn't it seem strange that the author of “Home Sweet Home” never had a home? (This apparently simple melody with its so emotional combination of music and words has always tugged at my heart strings – it's a simple piece of music, but requires the voice or instrument of an artist with a “pure” tone to perform it; and it gets me every time. Of course every second house had a piano in it in those days, and someone in the family had lessons and thumped away on it – no doubt murdering this beautiful song in the process). The author was John Howard Payne, who wrote it when he was stranded, penniless, in Paris. He was a wanderer on the face of the earth all his life. In a letter he wrote to a friend on 3rd March 1851 he himself says : “Surely there is something strange in the fact that it should have been my lot to cause so many people in the world to boast of the delights of home, when I have never had a home of my own and never expect to have one”. He died homeless, in Tunis, a year after he wrote this letter. His body was taken from his foreign grave and brought to the country of his birth, at last finding a home for the homeless author in the Arlington Cemetery at Washington, U.S.A.

Dadang Christanto: Survivor

1 April to 20 May 2012 Survivor is a major performance by Brisbane-based Dadang Christanto, a significant contemporary IndonesianAustralian artist. Survivor illustrates the disaster of May 2006 when a botched drilling operation in the Sidoarjo region of East Java blew out into a mud volcano. The toxic mud so far has drowned more than 11 villages and some 50,000 people have fled their homes. Factories have closed, at least 90 hectares of paddy fields ruined and fish farms destroyed. Every day, more than 20 Olympic swimming pools of stinking mud are produced, slowly consuming more villages. Survivor is a single 3 hour performance; local volunteers silently occupy the gallery space, covered in mud from the neck down and holding a photographic portrait of missing persons. Over the course of three hours participants maintain a silent vigil, memorialising this catastrophe and its ongoing consequences. The work contemplates loss and history, politics and shared humanity. After the performance, the exhibition space will contain the detritus from the performance alongside video and photographic documentation of the performance.

Elissa Ramsay

14 April to 9 May 2012 Elissa Eastwood (Ramsay) works in a unique style using resin, incorporating an eclectic mix of recycled materials and etching to build up very detailed works that, due to the nature of the materials used, lure the viewer to look beyond the surface and into the artwork. Counting Zigzags Backwards is an energetic and stimulating body of work, drawing inspiration from literature. The works travel from vibrant, fiery landscapes and sullen, stormy skies to intriguing narrativebased works that leave the viewer with questions, challenging them to complete the story. www.centralcoastimag.com.au

Ettalong & Woy Woy Italian Festival After a growth and development period of 3 years, the Central Coast Italian Festival is again set to wow locals and visitors to the Central Coast, on the weekend of April 14 and 15. “Targeting young Australian families, the aim is to inspire our next generation to adopt an understanding of the Italian culture” said Chris Farnon, event organiser. The venue for the festival is the stunning Italian inspired seaside village that is the Ettalong Beach Tourist Resort. Built by an Italian family, the resort started out as a modest market and has grown into a village boasting culture and activity, with the largest undercover market on the Central Coast, a 7 screen cinema complex, a 38 room boutique motel with pool and spa, plus 14 restaurants and cafes, some opening onto piazzas.

• OPEN 7 DAYS • HALF CABIN, OPEN & ALUMINIUM BOATS • BAIT & FISHING GEAR AVAILABLE AT KIOSK • EXPLORE THE BRISBANE WATERS 3A Petit St Booker Bay 18

If you are planning to travel to Italy come and speak with the experts in this field also. Our own “Michael Angelo” will be on site with paintbrush in hand, adding to the collection of Italian Renaissance art found throughout the cinema and buildings. Fashionista’s make note of the fashion parades and budding chefs be inspired with our cooking demonstrations. Join in the fun of the pasta eating competition – note the “no hands” rule – and dance the night away with Italian DJ George Vumbaca and singer Fran Brescia, beside the fountains and statues in the gorgeous

The Carousel This historic icon has charmed and delighted young and old at The Entrance since 1930. It has seen a number of owners since its arrival in Australia from France in the early 1900s and is now part of the National Trust classified Haas Family carnival, a family that has 400 years of carnival ancestry. The carousel, which was built in the late 1800s in Germany, was originally ‘powered’ by a pony but was converted to steam at the turn of the century. It remained steam driven until the 1950s when an old chev. engine was installed, and was converted to electricity in the 1970s. Its reed pipe organ, operated by bellows, remained in commission until 1950. Music is now supplied by tape, although the organ front has been restored. The carousel has pride of place on The Entrance waterfront where it is visited by not only today’s children, but by the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents of those children.

Azzuro Blu Wharf, The Entrance. "What a lovely evening out. Although it was raining we were able to park within a few metres of Azzuro Blu Wharf, The Entrance where The Italian Restaurant, right on the Waterfront is situated. We were so well served, cold water on the table, a comprehensive wine list, friendly service along with authentic Italian food - it doesn't get much better than that. Oysters, sweet fresh Sydney Rock Oysters were shared by 3 guests at our table. They were succulant Morney, Kilpatrick and Natural, whilst I enjoyed a Chicken Caesar Salad as an entree. Our main dishes were delightful. 2 of our party of 4 had the Scampi Alla Grillia dressed with lemon juice and garlic with rocket salad and shaved parmesan and cherry tomatoes. They thoroughly enjoyed the scampi, our other guest had the Enzo Prawns sauteed with garlic and chili in Napolitana sauce. While I admired the presentation and taste of their meals my favourite was definitely my own. Home made light, fluffy gnocci with a delicate cream sauce accompanied by Sauteed King Prawns and fresh Asparagus - it doesn't get much better than that. Do yourself a favour, enjoy this peaceful haven right on the waterfront with lovely views and food to match. The menu is more exciting than standard Italian restaurants, a great way to relax and enjoy." Carolyn Sinclair, Owner/Chef (Retired) Old Courthouse Restaurant, Minmi, Hunter Valley.
