From the Editor HAPPY NEW YEAR & KUNG HE FAT CHOI What a wonderful year it will be, I wish you good health, prosperity & happiness. It’s time to celebrate, enjoy our holidays, party with friends and family, go somewhere to watch the Fireworks bring in the New Year and then again for Australia Day to celebrate our beautiful country. The sandy beaches and clear waters beckon as the heat rises, contact Andersons Marina and Boat Hire (see page31) to explore the coast as you never have before. We have so many truly beautiful escapes on the coast, come and enjoy them with us. I say thank you to the lovely people that contacted me to let me know that they use iMag to set their social calendar. That is what I like to hear, that iMag is a useful tool to enhance the joy in your life. something different for you to try. Luka Chocolates are now available on line (see p3) that means you can buy your favourite handmade chocolates and send them to a loved one anywhere you like. Even to you. How good is that? Emma and I had a lovely lunch at Osteria A’Mano at Wyong and I tell you about that on p52. CATCH A TRAIN to WYONG, there is so much to do within walking distance from the Train Station. Please don’t drink and drive, visit ALCOFREE (p32) to purchase the best Wines and beers made traditionally then the Alcohol is removed. I love the German Sparkling Rose and the Gluten Free Beer. Totally delicious. To all my contributors, advertisers, readers and associates, have a very Happy New Year and Kung He Fat Choi!

Show Your Canine Pal some Summer Lovin’ The warmer weather is here, and as much as Aussies love the beach, there’s someone else in your family who loves the beach too – your canine companion! Did you know that there are nine designated ‘dog off-leash’ exercise areas on beaches across the Gosford LGA? These are: • Forresters Beach; • Wamberal Beach; • Terrigal Beach; • Avoca and North Avoca Beach; • Copacabana and MacMasters Beach; • Putty Beach; • Ocean and Umina Beach; • Pearl Beach; and • Patonga Beach. 8
www.monthlyimag.com.au
To check out the specific locations where your dog can go ‘off the leash’ at the beach, visit Gosford City Council’s website - gosford.nsw. gov.au To comply with current legislation under the Companion Animals Act (1998), dogs are permitted to exercise on council’s beaches in specific, off-leash designated areas, or while on the leash, as long as it is not a ‘dog prohibited’ area - such as between the red and yellow flags. While it’s great to let your dog off his lead for some exercise, please remember that you still need to be able to have your pooch under effective control. And to ensure everyone enjoys their day at the beach, don’t forget to take a water bowl and some doggie bags with you!

Update & renovate your kitchen This distressed kitchen which was lovely in its time needed to be revamped. The doors were in perfect condition but the owner wanted to brighten her kitchen and family area. So we refinished the doors and panels in a white acrylic paint, distressed the edges in with the keeping of the original finish. New kicks and a small amount of cabinetry. Then we gave the shutters a new look with the same paint finish. Well you can see the result, it has opened up the space and given a much fresher and new look to the whole area. The owner was very excited with the result. As were we.

"I do a few different types of massage therapies. Some clients leave it to me to treat what I find and the way that I treat them while other clients request certain treatments that they prefer. My specialty is definitely M.S.T Bowen therapy. There are a few different types of Bowen therapies around and this is one of the best. With this I can assess a client and correct postural and skeletal imperfections and misalignments just by adjusting muscle. There is NO skeletal forced manipulation or “cracking”. This treatment can be done in half an hour while clothed for just $50.00. So for those of you, who don’t want to be massaged, maybe a little self-conscious, are stretched for cash or if you can only spare half an hour then this is for you." Have you been hacked or conned? Part II In my last article I spoke about the dangers and risks the Internet can pose for the unprepared. In this article, I’m going to Richard Krupka continue the education, Owner PC Wrangler reinforce the warning and use a real life example to illustrate how easily it can happen. It’s my hope that this will enable you to keep yourself safe while you explorer the Internet. In the last few weeks a new variant of the “CryptoLocker” ransomware virus was released. This is a particularly nasty virus and attacks the host by seeking out important documents, spreadsheets, pictures etc… and encrypts them; rendering them useless. A website is then displayed to the victim explaining what has happened and if they want their files back, they need to pay the ransom, hence the term ransomware. It’s not possible for a technician to “decrypt” the files without knowing the encryption key or method used, the only way to recover files is to either pay the ransom or remove the virus and restore from backups. If you don’t have backups, your files are lost forever. So, how are people getting infected? What’s the entry point? It’s actually rather simple. There is an email going around from "The Office of State Revenue" which claims you have been caught speeding. To find out more, the email directs you to a website where you download a form; the download is the virus. Now, I know some of you reading this maybe laughing at “how stupid some people can be” others of you are going to people I’ve already helped, some have been helped by other technicians and some of you will need help in the future. But let’s look at why.
The Setup – ABC Bank Account Security Warning You receive an email from the ABC Bank claiming your accounts have been compromised and you need to click the provided link, login and immediately change your password to protect your accounts. The Reaction There’s only 2 possible reactions - how the email relates to you. • If you don’t bank with the ABC Bank, you can easily identify the email as a scam and delete it. • If you do bank with the ABC Bank, you can’t as easily identify the email as a scam and dismiss it, there is always the lingering doubt/question; you may even click the link and login. It’s the same with this virus. Everyone I’ve helped over the last few weeks has said: “I always speed on the M1 to and from Sydney, I thought they had finally caught up with me”. Because the email related to them, they opened it and downloaded the form. It’s that simple, once they finally send you something that relates to you, it’s not so easy to recognise it as a scam. Last time I gave you 10 tips on how you can protect yourself, in this article I’m going to give you just 1 Golden rule: It’s always a scam. The Carousel This historic icon has charmed and delighted young and old at The Entrance since 1930. It has seen a number of owners since its arrival in Australia from France in the early 1900s and is now part of the National Trust classified Haas Family carnival, a family that has 400 years of carnival ancestry. The carousel, which was built in the late 1800s in Germany, was originally ‘powered’ by a pony but was converted to steam at the turn of the century. It remained steam driven until the 1950s when an old chev. engine was installed, and was converted to electricity in the 1970s. Its reed pipe organ, operated by bellows, remained in commission until 1950. Music is now supplied by tape, although the organ front has been restored. The carousel has pride of place on The Entrance waterfront where it is visited by not only today’s children, but by the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents of those children.

MARINE RESCUE Central Coast
Top 10 tips for safer summer boating MRNSW Central Coast Unit Commander Roger Palmer said ‘These Top 10 Summer Boating Safety Tips are to help boaters enjoy our waterways.’ 1. Log On with the local MR radio base when you go out. So MR knows you’re out there. 2. Wear your lifejackets. Lifejackets save lives – but only when you wear them. 3. Travel at a safe speed. A safe speed is one at which you can stop quickly in an emergency. 4. Check mechanicals and battery. More breakdowns are caused by these faults than any other cause. 5. Check your safety equipment. This should include lifejackets; marine radio; anchor; flares; EPIRB; bucket; fire extinguisher; navigation lights and a torch. 6. Make sure your fuel is fresh. Old fuel causes serious problems, especially with outboard tanks.
7. Call for a radio check. If the signal is poor it can be fixed before you Unit Commander Roger Palmer need it. 8. Check the weather forecast. You can call your local MR base for the latest information. 9. Know your position. If you break down out there, we need to know where you are so we can help. 10. Take extreme care crossing bars. Do not attempt to cross a bar you’ve never crossed before without getting local advice.

Peninsula Theatre Woy Woy
"Yes, Prime Minister" from February 27
By Anthony Jay and Jonathan Lynn Directed by Christine Vale at Woy Woy’s Peninsula Theatre for three weekends from February 27. The original writers of the hit TV series “Yes Minister” and “Yes, Prime Minister” collaborated once again five years ago to create a new comedy about our favourite English P.M., the honourable James Hacker. Spin, blackberries, sexed-up dossiers, sleaze, global warming and a country on the brink of financial meltdown form the backdrop to mayhem at Chequers as the Foreign Minister of Kumranistan makes a seriously compromising offer of salvation. Prime Minister Jim Hacker remains in power with his Cabinet Secretary Sir Humphrey Appleby and Principal Private Secretary Bernard Woolley. But for how long? Woy Woy Little Theatre director Christine Vale (“The 39 Steps”, “Competitive Tenderness”) has assembled a stellar cast to bring this ‘comedy with adult themes’ to life. Andrew Thomson (“Insignificance”, “The Accused” & “Inheritance”) plays the P.M., Mike Jeffries is shifty Sir Humphrey Appleby: Cabinet Secretary, Adam Young (“The Mousetrap”, “The Underpants”, “The Producers” & “Spamalot”) takes Bernard Woolly: Principal Private Secretary to the PM for a ride you won’t forget, while Kellie Martin (“Streetcar Named Desire”, “Antigone” & “A Funny Thing… Forum”) plays Claire Sutton: Special Policy Adviser.
Others in the cast include Bob Farmer (“Competitive Tenderness”, “Arsenic and Old Lace”) is the corrupt and frisky Kumranistan Ambassador, Gordon Crawford plays Jeremy Burnham: Director General of the BBC and Renee Chinn is Simone Chester: BBC Presenter. Bookings ONLY THROUGH WOY WOY LITTLE THEATRE’S WEBSITE: woywoylt.com. Performance Dates: Friday & Saturday evenings (8pm) on Feb 27, 28, March 6, 7, 13 & 14. Roll up, roll up for Powerhouse Museum’s circus spectacular!
CIRCUS FACTORY
20 December 2014 – 3 May 2015 The Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences’ Powerhouse Museum will explode over summer with Circus Factory, a program of spectacular proportions, featuring all the wonder of the circus with live performance, sideshow favourites, local and international exhibits and vintage toys and novelties. From 20 December 2014 explorers of all ages will have the opportunity to test their skill and showmanship in a world of imagination and discovery,
crafted in collaboration with renowned French scenographer Gérard Cholot and designer Alban Le Henry. A circus and carnival wonderland of this scale has never before been staged in Australia. “This exhibition is an immersive, hands-on experience for the whole family, glowing in neon, with a new discovery around every corner.” said Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences Director, Rose Hiscock. Circus Factory will present an exhibition of circus costumes and props - some over 100 years old. A 100 year-old carousel from Craig Robson’s Fairground Follies collection will be on show,
with rides offered all day, every day. On display will also be hilarious kinetic sculptures and contemporary mechanical figures created by Adelaide's David Archer, who will conduct a series of workshops for children to build their own wacky wire bugs. Visitors can delve a step further into sideshow activities like the Strongman Game and Laughing Clowns, with the opportunity to learn the scientific explanations that underlie the mystique.

Kenneth Grahame’s immortal story of life on the riverbank is a rollicking yet gentle adventure, starring the pompous, arrogant, vain, hilarious Toad – a favourite with children everywhere. With laughs and surprises for children and adults, this is interactive theatre at its best. Dinosaurs alive at the Australian Reptile Park! Although they have been extinct for millions of years, the mighty Tyrannosaurus Rex and the Spinosaurus will meet and greet visitors from Boxing Day, right through to the end of the Australia Day long weekend. The T-Rex is probably the most popular dinosaur of all and was found in North America over 66 million years ago. The Spinosaurus is bigger, and thought to be the largest carnivorous dinosaur. This giant was found in North Africa around 110 million years ago. There will be photo opportunities for kids throughout the day with these enormous beasts. Our most famous living dinosaur, Elvis the saltwater crocodile, will thrill crowds when he leaps for his lunch at 1.30pm every day of the holidays. Hugo the giant 165kg Galapagos tortoise will delight visitors when he walks through the Park at 12.30pm each day. Throughout the school holidays, brave reptile keepers will weigh an enormous reticulated python, raid the newly laid alligator nests and we’ll celebrate Elvis’ 49th birthday on Friday, 2nd January 2015. Elvis celebrates like no-one else – by devouring half a cow!
School Holiday Fun!
The Australian Reptile Park is simply the Best Family FUN Day Out and home to over 1,000 Aussie favourites and exotic reptiles. Free wildlife shows run daily and the new adventure playground is as popular as some of the animals! Visitors meet animals up close, handfeed kangaroos and have photos with a koala, wombat, Tasmanian devils and a giant Burmese python. There are native bushland and undercover picnic areas, with café, free BBQ’s and free, no-fuss parking. There are also loads of workshops running, with Kids 2 Keeper junior zoo keeping programs, a Behind the Scenes tour and a Devilish Encounter with the feisty Tasmanian devil. The Italian Restaurant Azzuro Blu Wharf, The Entrance
"What a lovely evening out. Although it was raining we were able to park within a few metres of Azzuro Blu Wharf, The Entrance where The Italian Restaurant, right on the Waterfront is situated. We were so well served, cold water on the table, a comprehensive wine list, friendly service along with authentic Italian food it doesn't get much better than that. Oysters, sweet fresh Sydney Rock Oysters were shared by 3 guests at our table. They were succulent Mornay, Kilpatrick and Natural, whilst I enjoyed a Chicken Caesar Salad as an entree. Our main dishes were delightful. 2 of our party of
4 had the Scampi Alla Grillia dressed with lemon juice and garlic with rocket salad and shaved parmesan and cherry tomatoes. They thoroughly enjoyed the scampi, our other guest had the Enzo Prawns sauteed with garlic and chili in Napolitana sauce. While I admired the presentation and taste of their meals my favourite was definitely my own. Home made light, fluffy gnocci with a delicate cream sauce accompanied by Sauteed King Prawns and fresh Asparagus - it doesn't get much better than that. The menu is more exciting than standard Italian restaurants, a great way to relax and enjoy." Carolyn Sinclair, Retired Chef, Old Courthouse Restaurant, Minmi.

Seacoast Fishing Operating from Kincumber for the past 10 years, we have the freshest fish in town, straight from the boat to our shop, which is located 400m from the scenic road roundabout towards Macmasters Beach. Our catch consists of Snapper, Ocean Jackets, Bream, Trevally, mullet (when in season ). We also have Lobsters, local Oysters and school prawns ready for Christmas and a variety of frozen products as well! As our weather warms up, our lobsters start heading out to sea for food. During the winter months when the mullet are running we keep the male mullet for lobster bait. The lobsters love the split and salted mullet and this feed also lasts longer in the traps. About mid November is when our lobsters are available. We have tanks on our premises, where we store them for up to a month ready for transport. If you need lobsters, just pick them from our tanks and we can pack them for you, we cook everyday, so your choices are cooked, live, or asleep! Open Thurs, Fri 11am - 6pm and Sat 9am - 6pm. Non Alcoholic Drinks from Alcofree Alcofree is a company new to the Central Coast and indeed new to NSW. They are the only company that specialises in retailing a wide range of non-alcoholic drinks – that is: beers, wines, ciders, cocktails and more. Not everyone chooses alcoholic drinks. Some chose not to drink on some occasions only - pregnant women, designated drivers, athletes and people on some medications for example. Others choose not to drink perhaps as a lifestyle or religious choice. Alcofree was established to give these people a selection of great drinks that look and taste the same or very similar as the alcoholic version, yet without the downside of alcohol. Great for celebrations of all types! And for corporate functions where the ‘duty of care’ factor is high (and the taxman is always looking), their range of alcohol free and non-alcoholic beers and wines go down very tastefully and responsibly. In fact most cannot tell the difference between their beers and the normal brew. Check them out at www.alcofree.com.au or visit their bar at Unit1/15-17 Ace Crescent Tuggerah. Ph: 4351 7176
Gardens & Gardening
Discover, play, relax, enjoy Whether you are a gardening enthusiast, photographer, bird watcher, belong to a community group or plan to catch up with family and friends, there is so much to enjoy at Mt Penang Gardens. Opened in 2003, the eight hectare gardens are truly a natural beauty on the Central Coast and offer a splendid change this season. Mt Penang Gardens is made up of themed garden rooms which feature a variety of permanent and changeable gardens modelled around a cascading water feature and outdoor amphitheatre, with all the water collected on site.
Mt Penang Parklands, Kariong (1 hour north of Sydney and 2 minutes from the Gosford exit off the M1). Open daily 9:30am-4:30pm (closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Years Day and special events). For more information call 02 4340 1002.
The Gardens is home to 1,000 native plant species and includes elements that acknowledge our indigenous culture, as well as striking inspirations from other countries. Since 2004, 12 magnificent Wondabyne Stone Sculptures have occupied an area in the Gardens. Having been moved from their original site at the Gosford Quarries, the sculptures are now more readily accessible to the community and are kept safe from vandalism. Come and explore the grounds by taking a guided tour of the gardens with the Blue Thumb volunteers, feed the ducks, bring a picnic, take advantage of the free BBQ facilities or drop by the Waterfall CafĂŠ, which offers a delightful menu and Devonshire tea.

Summer in the Garden
Looking after your soil is the key to a luxuriant and easy care garden. With a little “Tender Loving Care” for the soil, your precious plants will thrive and grow over the summer... even on the sunniest of days. The first step is to look after yourself.....Slip Slop Slap before you get down and dirty ! Try to garden in the cool of the morning or the longer evenings and leave midday for the Lizards. Next step is to provide some food for your plants. Spread around some manure or pelletised organic fertilizer such as OrganicExtra to gently feed the new growth over the growing season. If the soil seems dry, consider using a soil wetting agent to improve water penetration and save on water. Its easy to scatter on at this stage, or use a liquid form from a watering can. Now you need to provide some insulation and protection for those important roots.... a little summer blanket ! There are many types of mulch from pine bark, through sugar cane to pebbles. The common factors are that they hold moisture in the soil, keep the heat out, and help reduce weeds. It’s hard to think of a plant that does not appreciate mulching, just keep it a little away from the trunk of the plant, and make it nice and thick. Lucerne and Sugar Cane are best for the veggie and flower gardens. Use Tea Tree or Eucalyptus mulch around shrubs and natives. Polished pebbles really highlight your succulents in a pot or the garden. Last of all is the watering. With rain still scarce it is important not to waste town water, so irrigate gardens deeply a couple of times a week. Use the cooler times of the day so that the water doesn’t just evaporate back into the atmosphere. Small pots might need watering every day in the height of summer, larger ones maybe every second day.
