Dogs in Open Spaces Strategy Gosford City Council is developing a Dogs in Open Spaces Strategy to replace its existing Dog Exercise Areas Policy. The Strategy will aim to enhance the opportunities for exercising and enjoying dogs, whilst protecting natural environments and managing impacts on users of open space areas such as beaches, parks, cycle ways and playgrounds. In recent years Council has received various comments from the community regarding dogs in open space areas. The Dogs in Open Spaces Strategy will respond to these and other dog related matters and provide equitable directions for dog management in open space areas in the future. The Dogs in Open Spaces Strategy will involve considerable community engagement over February and March including a ‘Have Your Say’ online forum, surveys, community ‘Speak Out’ workshops, shopping centre consultations and targeted sessions with community, school and other groups. The surveys are available on Council’s web site www.gosford.nsw.gov.au under the Open Space and Leisure Services topic titled Dogs in Open Spaces Strategy.

‘Hard copy’ surveys can also be obtained through Council’s Customer Service Centres, community centres and libraries. Workshops will be held in late February and details of the dates and locations will be made available on Council’s website as they become available. You can become involved in this important study by participating in the ‘Have Your Say’ online forum, completing a survey and/or attending a community session. This will ensure that the Strategy is a balanced document that considers the needs of all people in the community, including dog owners and people who do not own a dog. Join the forum….. www.haveyoursaygosford.com.au/ dogsinopenspaces If you have any enquiries about the study or the surveys and workshops, please contact Council’s Coordinator Parks, Playgrounds and Foreshores, Kim Radford, on 4325 8222.

The Mantelpiece I can’t identify the precise moment when I thought, “capture this”. As I cleared my family home of 35 years after the deaths of both parents, I paused in front of the sitting-room mantelpiece. I photographed it , and looking at the image weeks later I realized the brica-brac of china, photographs, and dusty flowers was not just a collection of sundry bits, but a document. Here, in all its unique, mismatched glory, was the story of my family. On the beige tiles of my parents’1950s fire surround, objects gathered in peace over decades of family changes; on the gas-fire ledge was the blue vase, one of my last gifts to my mother. The frame in front has a photograph of my paternal grandparents. Behind that is my parents’ wedding photograph, my mother wearing a smart 1950’s suit and a corsage. In another frame is my mother’s mother, Annie Gething, raising a glass in a bar in Jersey, where they lived. She was, and remains, my role model. Widowed young she stayed on Jersey through the occupation to save the family home. The floral pot I brought back from Poland; inside it is the usual accumulation of loose change and safety pins. On the mantelpiece itself, the Remembrance Day poppy reminds me not only of my mother’s charity collecting but of the little-spoken-of loss of her father when she was 13. The card at the back is poignant. It is a get-well card I gave my father when he first became ill. It is an unashamedly soppy card : a large bear in bed. It stayed there 12 years until his death in 2004, and remained even as the bereavement cards were placed on and removed from the mantelpiece. For every mantel bristling with formal invitations, there will be another brimming with child life – school reports and photos, home-made calendars and cards. The mantel is a landscape of lost and random objects. Outsiders judging a family by their mantel array tread into fact and fiction. The language of the mantel is a private code. A neighbour remembers the school dinner money behind the mantel clock. My newsagent has just had a mantel in his new house – “it’s just not a home

without one”. Another neighbour tells the story of the day in the 1960’s when his brother ran 5 miles home to say they had won big time on the pools. The coupon was always left ready for posting beside the clock on the family mantel – and it was still there as he went to share the news with his mother, who had forgotten to post it. I am still living in my family house, for the moment, and I have that same childhood mantelpiece all to myself. It is – unconsciously or otherwise – Zen-like. What I put on it are temporary objects – stones, shells, driftwood, bleached bone. There is always a candle, flowers, a postcard of some art. Sometimes it seems to grow; but never enough for it to be excavated in quite the same way.

Maitland Bell One of the valued items that is held in Brisbane Water Historical Society’s Henry Kendall Museum is the original Bell from the SS “Maitland” that was wrecked in a violent storm at present day Maitland Bay (previously Boat Harbour) on May 6th, 1898. It is a very interesting and moving story. The bell from the “Maitland” was found by fishermen in 1957 under a reef and was eventually hauled up the steep hillside by John and Josie Wall. Their grandson, Ray Sheldrick of Tyalgum was a past visitor to the Museum. They resisted offers to buy the bell for scrap and it was erected in a Memorial on the Scenic Highway overlooking Maitland Bay. However, what the books or Google don’t tell you, is that the bell was given to Brisbane Water Historical Society by National Parks and Wildlife and is displayed in Henry Kendall Historical museum, as well as other artifacts from the “Maitland”. The bell at Maitland Bay is a replica.

Booker Bay Cemetery This little cemetery was never sanctified but contains not only the remains of William Booker, who died in 1850, but also those of the victims of the SS “Maitland” which was wrecked in 1898. There has been quite a bit of speculation over the years as to the cemetery’s locality. It would be covered now by developments but according to Gosford City Council Records its location is Lots 201 and 202 Bogan Road and No. 159 Booker Bay Road.

The Carousel This historic icon has charmed and delighted young and old at The Entrance since 1930. It has seen a number of owners since its arrival in Australia from France in the early 1900s and is now part of the National Trust classified Haas Family carnival, a family that has 400 years of carnival ancestry. The carousel, which was built in the late 1800s in Germany, was originally ‘powered’ by a pony but was converted to steam at the turn of the century. It remained steam driven until the 1950s when an old chev. engine was installed, and was converted to electricity in the 1970s. Its reed pipe organ, operated by bellows, remained in commission until 1950. Music is now supplied by tape, although the organ front has been restored. The carousel has pride of place on The Entrance waterfront where it is visited by not only today’s children, but by the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents of those children.
