Autumn on the Coast From the Editor

With March comes a gentle cooling of temperatures and this gives us a new burst of energy. Hopefully the heat and humidity has passed as there is an abundance of entertainment and events over the next two months to keep you very busy. Get out your diary and start writing as we have a bumper issue of wonderful things for you to do. I had a call from the loveliest lady, Penny who told me of a very disappointing occasion she and her family had at a local restaurant. We have all experienced this why I am so choosy about who I promote. I sent them along to The Italian Restaurant and asked her to write a review. Well I am happy to say that they are now big fans and like us, will return often. Read Penny’s review on p50. Thank you to Steve, Kelly and their team for always doing their best. If you have not yet booked for Opera in The Arboretum I suggest you do it now, as last year they had a full house and I am sure this one will be too. Sculpture on the Greens is on again and will be even bigger this year, see p21. Ecoburbia is now in its 2nd year, after its great success last year. There is so much happening here for you to enjoy the day. See pages 48 & 49.

6

www.monthlyimag.com.au

Hot Pans on Fire a steelband was formed after the Bush Fires in Victoria, and are here to entertain you at Narara Ecoburbia so read their story on p39 - then go and listen to them. WOW! What a great day out they have planned for you. Clara Boutique is having a SALE. I bought some Spanish, German & Italian leather shoes from her and the price will please you as it did me, the 3 pairs were the cost of 1 pair elsewhere. See p35 for more information. ON A PERSONAL NOTE. I am so very proud of iMag and thank all of you who take the time to call or email me to let me know how wonderful you think iMag is too. I find businesses that we can proudly promote and know that you will have a good experience when you visit them. May you always have Love to share, Health to spare and Friends that care.

Gosford/Edogawa Commemorative Garden Gosford formed a Sister City Agreement with Edogawa, Japan in 1988. A gift from Edogawa, the garden was officially opened in September 1994 and is based on a traditional ‘shuyu’ (strolling style) garden, incorporating Japanese features. With meandering pathways, a roofed Japanese pavilion overlooking the Koi pond, raked dry stone garden and traditional Japanese teahouse, the Gosford/Edogawa

Commemorative Garden offers a tranquil setting in which to relax and enjoy art and nature. Philosophy of the Japanese garden Chinese and Japanese philosophy tell us that ones life can be lived more fully by being open to the universal rhythms of nature. A Japanese garden seeks to give us a tranquil setting for meditation and reflection. We hope you enjoy your visit to this garden and find pleasure in its beauty and tranquility. Informal tours detailing the Japanese aesthetics of the garden are conducted by trained guides every Wednesday at 11.00 am or by request. The garden is open daily from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm. Entry is free. Gosford Regional Gallery & Gosford-Edogawa Commemorative Garden 36 Webb Street, East Gosford 2250 Phone: 02 4325 0056 www.gosfordregionalgallery.com/garden.htm

Bringing Fashion to the Valley Summer 2014 we started a range of fashion in my shop. We sourced out what we thought would be a range that would suit a wide range of ages and sizes. We launched our “fashion in the valley” with a fashion parade at the shop, using the local talent and the footpath as a catwalk. The night was made a huge success and lots of laughter brought on by the commentary of our master of ceremonies Klara Kaye, whom I will be forever grateful to for being a part of my network. Due to the success of the range and the enjoyment of those who attended, we will be bringing in our next range for Autumn and Winter, hopefully with another fashion parade at the end of April. If anyone would like to receive information on our events you can email us on sales@daorah.com.au or alternately phone 0438 534 954 or 4353 4954 Monday-Friday.

Bowen Therapy Bowen therapy can be the quickest and most effective correctional therapy ever experienced. Through a thorough assessment I can determine what are causal and secondary imbalances of the body, and using AOIT MYOPRACTIC (Bowen therapy) I can adjust muscle tension resulting in the skeletal system to relax back to it's correct position. This means that skeletal adjustment is made using muscles NOT forced manipulation or cracking.

Bowen therapy and help to develop new techniques, which continually evolve my treatments. I am also a qualified massage therapist and am able to use other modalities such as remedial, trigger point or myofacial release techniques to treat imbalances if Bowen doesn't suit you, and for those having issue with fluid, Manual Lymphatic Drainage is also available.

Sculpture on the Greens 2015 The exhibition will run from 11 April and 24 May 2015 at Mecure Kooindah Waters Golf and Spa Resort with the gala opening night, 10 April 2015. This year’s event has attracted over 60 local and interstate professional sculptors, with their works being of a very high caliber, pointing towards an interesting, contemporary exhibition with a diverse and eclectic range of sculptures assembled for the exhibition. This year we have several International Sculptors, one of which is the winner of Sculpture by the Sea 2014, exhibiting a new large abstract bronze work. During the event, other exhibitions will be offered under the umbrella of Sculpture on the Greens, including Bobby P Fine Art Gallery in Wyong and Forest of Tranquility. Mentorship of Local Emerging Sculptors This year, our mentorship program, has run over 18 weeks, allowing 4 local emerging sculptors to each create a large outdoor work for the exhibition, This is a remarkable opportunity for these artists.

Westfield Plaza Promotion International and Australian Sculptors will exhibit major works in the foyer of Westfield Tuggerah, to promote the exhibition. The Director and his team invite you to view the works during daylight hours. Entry is FREE. Information about the Exhibition, Donations and Volunteering can be requested by contacting the Director of Sculpture on the Greens, Col Henry on 0448512788. Convict Footprints on the Old Great North Road is an award winning play that is performed in remote bushland on the convict built road in Dharug National Park, within the Gosford LGA. Considered the most spectacular section of the road and the only World Heritage listed area on the Central Coast, Devines Hill comes to life with this theatre performance. This immersive, ‘theatre in the wild’ takes its audience on a journey back to the 1830s when times were tough and the act of stealing a handkerchief could get you life in “god forsaken Australia”. The play engages audiences in a way that no ordinary visit to the road can do. Script writer, Stephen Hopely and Director Jerry Retford have combined the tortured stories of these men with what has become known as “good old Aussie humour” to tell the story of building this historically significant road. limited season: 2nd, 3rd, 16th and 17th May 2015. Tickets from www.ticketbooth.com.au, search ‘convict’. www.convictfootprints.com.au

The Carousel This historic icon has charmed and delighted young and old at The Entrance since 1930. It has seen a number of owners since its arrival in Australia from France in the early 1900s and is now part of the National Trust classified Haas Family carnival, a family that has 400 years of carnival ancestry. The carousel, which was built in the late 1800s in Germany, was originally ‘powered’ by a pony but was converted to steam at the turn of the century. It remained steam driven until the 1950s when an old chev. engine was installed, and was converted to electricity in the 1970s. Its reed pipe organ, operated by bellows, remained in commission until 1950. Music is now supplied by tape, although the organ front has been restored. The carousel has pride of place on The Entrance waterfront where it is visited by not only today’s children, but by the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents of those children.

Umina Beach becomes Retail Gem In recent years, after much hard work by the Peninsula Chamber of Commerce and Gosford City Council, Umina Beach has become a thriving retail centre boasting all the major supermarkets (Coles, Woolworths and Aldi) together with Bunnings Hardware and McDonalds. These anchor retailers have complimented a host of smaller retailers, service stations (Shell and Caltex), banks (Commonwealth and Westpac), cafes and restaurants in what is now arguably one of the best retail strip shopping centres on the Central Coast. All the major retailers are spread along West Street with easy pedestrian access and generous Council car parking to the rear of the busy main street. The town centre has a busy daytime café culture and has become the destination of choice for shoppers looking to fulfil their daily shopping needs. Residents have easy access to two major medical centres, Council library, Post Office, chemists and newsagency all of which provide a range of essential services. Umina’s resurgence came from the highly successful Peninsula Chamber Mainstreet Program

and Gosford City Council’s Financial Strategy which saw the streets upgraded, power lines placed underground, the planting of Cabbage Tree Palms and repaving of footpaths. The upgrade led to renewed property owner confidence and major investments from key retailers who now underpin the local economy and provide employment for over 500 locals. The main access, West Street, runs parallel to Ocean Beach and Umina Beach which boasts some of the safest beaches on the Central Coast patrolled by both volunteer lifesavers and Council Lifeguards. The proximity to the beach has greatly influenced the seaside culture of the town which is only minutes from the award winning NRMA Ocean Beach Resort & Holiday Park and the Umina Precinct Park. With excellent public bus connections to both Woy Woy and Ettalong Beach, the town is ideally located to serve the large surrounding residential catchment and cater for holiday makers during the busy summer period. Enjoy the bustling town and its wonderful retailers.

Boat propellers pose a risk that often ignored because they are ‘out of sight and out of mind’. A strike from a propeller can cause serious injury or even death. NSW Roads & Maritime records show that in the past six years there have been 41 propeller strike incidents in NSW, resulting in five fatalities, 39 serious and seven minor injuries. The risk is high for anyone in the water near a moving powerboat. Swimmers, water-skiers and wake-boarders are vulnerable to prop strike. A typical 3-blade propeller spinning at 3200 rpm can make 160 cuts a second. The skipper is responsible for safety. Every skipper should be vigilant and consider the area around the boat’s prop as a ‘hazard zone’. Follow these rules for the safety of your friends and family: • Check near the back of the boat to ensure the area is all clear before starting the engine. • Turn the engine off when near people in the water; many propellers continue to spin even in neutral. • Keep a proper lookout when underway, especially when near swimmers. • Stay out of designated swimming areas. • Observe ‘distance off’ rules, keep clear of people in the water and other vessels. • Brief any other person driving the boat about the risks. Reminder sticker for your boat is available from Roads and Maritime

Get involved!

FLASH Creative Festival is back in 2015! Following the success of last year’s inaugural FLASH Creative Festival, Woy Woy Little Theatre has announced it’s coming back in 2015! Theatre President Christine Vale said that the original festival gave dozens of creative people from the Central Coast the chance to work with professional theatre tutors at a nominal fee. “Woy Woy Little Theatre heavily subsidised the fees paid to the tutors and gave a lot of people a golden opportunity to learn more” said Ms Vale. Three of the original tutors have been retained to refresh and expand on the three vital elements of theatre: writing, directing and acting (including voice). The man regarded as the world master of the short play form, Alex Broun, will be hosting a short play writing weekend workshop from March 27 to 29. This Writers’ Workshop will introduce participants to the skills of writing a short play as well as exploring the five areas that make up a great ten minute play - character, story and situation, dialogue, theatricality and dramatic

tension or humour. The Directing Workshop with Aarne Neeme is scheduled for the weekend of June 6 and 7 while the third workshop is the Voice and Acting Workshop under the direction of voice and acting coach Gabrielle Rogers on June 20 and 21. Christine Vale added that this year’s theme for Flash was the word FREE. “This means the word ‘free’ – in any of its meanings or forms - must be integral to every script as ‘FLASH’ was last year,” said the president. Bookings for the three workshops are open now and additional details are available on line: www.woywoylt.com.au and the dedicated FLASH website www.ccflashfestival.com. You must register as a participant or observer to be involved. Cost: Participants $50. Observers $30. WWLT at The Peninsula Theatre Corner of McMasters and Ocean Beach Road, Woy Woy NSW 2256

Festival Packs A Punch! “Bellisimo” is the general comment when asked “did you enjoy the food at the Italian Festival?” said Alex Quinn, Festival co-ordinator! The festival now in its sixth year, was the result of residents encouraging the owner of Ettalong Beach Tourist Resort, to showcase this unique venue, with an annual event. Built by an Italian family, this unusual resort contains a 40 room boutique motel, the stunning Cinema Paradiso complex with 6 theatres decorated in Italian, Moroccan and Art Deco themes and a bustling European style village market with fresh produce, locally made crafts, and five cafes – one roasting their own coffee. In addition to the weekend market, ten restaurants surround the exterior of the resort, offering traditional Italian, Spanish, Turkish, Chinese, Japanese and contemporary Australian cuisine, all week. Situated only one hour by road from Sydney or a short ferry trip from Sydney’s Northern beaches, the festival fun starts onboard FantaSeas’ vessel from Palm Beach with captain and crew dressed as Italian sailors and an accordionist serenading the passengers! During the Festival, sponsored by the National Australia Bank and Campbell’s Home Timber and Hardware, who supplied every screw, nut and bolt in the resort, a plethora of stalls fill stunning piazzas adorned with Italian Renaissance Art, offering authentic homecooked Italian cuisine such as pasta dishes,

Ladies - don’t miss our pop-up Fashion Show by designer Clara and Wishsister Boutique, on the balconies of Piazza Giulietta and check out the Italian Murano glass jewellery. Explore our function room displaying an Italian photographic exhibition, or catch an Italian film in the cinema. Italian cars line up for viewing and our own “Michael Angelo” local artist Simon Sawell, will be on site with paintbrush in hand, adding to the collection of Italian Renaissance art found throughout the resort. Punch & Judy (originating from Italy) and the Pinocchio puppet shows will entertain the kids, along with Piccolo the Clown and Benino the Donkey. “Hot Pans on Fire”

Steelband concert at Narara Ecoburbia festival 11 April 2015 Every Australian will remember the terrible and tragic Victorian bushfires of February 2009, in which 173 people died and 414 were injured. After the fire residents of the town of Marysville got together to form the steelband “Pans on Fire”. Most of the band members had lost their house and all of their belongings. “Pans on Fire” started as a music therapy project to help the people overcome the trauma, and the problems of the long recovery process. With the exception of the project initiator, none of the members had ever played a steel pan, but all were ready to give it a go! In 2011 the band combined with another local steelband, “Hot Pans”.

“Hot Pans on Fire” has been invited to the Narara Ecoburbia festival, on Saturday 11 April 2015, to give the lunchtime concert at

12pm and to tell the story of how music is helping to rebuild their community. They will be introduced by the founder of the Narara Ecovillage, Lyndall Parris, who will describe how the Ecovillage is building its own community. At 3.30pm “Hot Pans on Fire” will lead a grand finale which will include young children playing the instruments they have made at the festival.

at over 100 concerts. In April 2013 the members, along with other community volunteers, organised the first ever Australian Steelband Festival, held in Marysville. Even the Sultan of Oman sent his band! On Tour in France in 2014. In August and September 2014 “Pans on Fire” toured Southern France.

Admission to the festival and all the performances is free.

The festival will also see performances by the award winning Narara Valley High School band, local music group Los Bonkers and local buskers.

Since 2009, the steel band has had an astonishing journey. Growing in numbers, it has developed a varied repertoire that includes calypso, latin, afro, jazz, folk and classical music. In December 2011 “Pans on Fire” released its first CD entitled “Recovery”. The Marysville steelbands have now performed

“Ecoburbia” festival at Narara Who would want to miss the quirky and engaging “Narara Ecoburbia” festival? Combining “eco” and “suburbia”, this festival celebrates everything that makes our suburbs different, interesting, more sustainable and, of course, more fun. And it’s free! Community music from Trinidadian steel bands and ukuleles. Miriam’s scones and Tastes of Mexico. Kids entertainment, puppets and making your own musical instrument. Eco hair dressing, recycled fashions, electric bikes, DIY mud brick homes, growing herbs and organic vegetables, composting, keeping chooks, natural health, forums on community and environmental issues. There is something for everyone. A very “cool” festival highlight, and a first for the Coast, is the lunchtime concert by steel band “Hot Pans on Fire”, from Marysville, Victoria. A moving story, of how non-musicians got together to form a band as a way to rebuild their community after the terrible fires. Kids activities include Art Tank’s continuous, drop-in workshops, making music from recycled materials; circus performers, jugglers, puppets, and visits to the school farm. Angus Stewart of ABC’s Gardening Australia, talks about composting and worm farming, Gosford Council’s free workshops include keeping chooks. Check out the festival’s innovative “Worm Trailer”. Discuss native orchids, buy native plants, learn to grow herbs, and hear about encouraging birds in

backyards. The Health Hut allows you to explore or experience massage and meditation (as taught to the South Sydney Rabbitohs), yoga for kids, gut health (including preparation of raw and fermented food), kinesiology, energy healing, and reflexology. There will be talks and demonstrations of building natural homes, including mud-brick making, advice on non-toxic paints, alternative energy, healthy cleaning products and food preparation including Thermomixes. For your “Mind Food”, controversial Sydney Morning Herald opinion writer Elizabeth Farrelly takes on the planning establishment. Local politicians are asked to prove that they have actually thought about future generations, and not just getting elected in 2 years time, and people from the pioneering Narara Ecovillage tell you about their plans to create better ways of living together. With great food, chill-out areas, music, entertainment, information, massage and free workshops, why wouldn’t you be there? The festival will be held from 10 am to 4 pm on Saturday 11 April at the Narara Valley High School, Cnr. Fountains and Pandala Road, Narara, 5 minutes drive north west of Gosford. Admission is free. Food worth travelling for

The Italian Restaurant "foodie heaven" Azzuro Blu Wharf, The Entrance

“A restaurant experience so complete, it was "foodie heaven"! A little taste of The Mediterranean right on the waterfront at Azzuro Blu Wharf in The entrances' restaurants hub. The Italian Restaurant offers delicious regional fare with a seafood bias. We chose a mix of traditional dishes, succulent garlic and chilli prawns served in a rich spicy tomato sauce, beautifully balanced salt and pepper calamari accompanied by the freshest of fresh rocket and shaved parmesan salad. Entrees not to be forgotten. Mains were equally delicious, tender lamb backstrap; gnocchi deftly prepared in a variety of different tasty sauces and grilled scampi beautifully prepared.

Food worth travelling for! As was expected, desserts were a treat to round off a truly scrumptious meal. Menu options would be a staple in most high end city restaurants and were completely supported by a comprehensive bar and wine list, quality ingredients, highly skilled culinary expertise along with delightful professional service. An added bonus was a Piano Accordionist serenading diners with Italian inspired compositions further enhancing the warm summer evening's atmosphere. A more memorable dining experience would be hard to find in this vicinity. Regular return visits are now definitely on our dining out agenda. Penny Martin Always seeking a "good food experience"

Seacoast Fishing Operating from Kincumber for the past 10 years, we have the freshest fish in town, straight from the boat to our shop, which is located 400m from the scenic road roundabout towards Macmasters Beach. Our catch consists of Snapper, Ocean Jackets, Bream, Trevally, mullet (when in season ). We also have Lobsters, local Oysters and school prawns ready for Christmas and a variety of frozen products as well! As our weather warms up, our lobsters start heading out to sea for food. During the winter months when the mullet are running we keep the male mullet for lobster bait. The lobsters love the split and salted mullet and this feed also lasts longer in the traps. About mid November is when our lobsters are available. We have tanks on our premises, where we store them for up to a month ready for transport. If you need lobsters, just pick them from our tanks and we can pack them for you, we cook everyday, so your choices are cooked, live, or asleep! Open Thurs, Fri 11am - 6pm and Sat 9am - 6pm. Non Alcoholic Drinks from Alcofree

the same sophisticated taste, your choice of drinks is pathetic. And this poor choice even extends to restaurants, pubs and clubs.

Drinking is such an enjoyable part of life!

Well, we’ve discovered Alcofree. At Alcofree they believe in offering drinkers and nondrinkers a choice – a choice of a growing range of non-alcoholic and alcohol free beverages to suit every occasion and almost every palate. Their range of nonalcoholic beers, wines, ciders, cocktails and more is the best you will find.

Almost all of our social occasions include drinks of some kind, and at the end of a long day’s work it’s hard to beat the relaxing feeling of a lazy refreshing drink. And who doesn’t enjoy a long cool drink with their meal or when vegging-out in front of the entertainment box? The range of drinks available to us is huge, both at the supermarket and the bottleshop. Huge that is if you drink alcohol or are happy with sugary water-based drinks. But if you don’t drink alcohol, or are cutting down, and want

And best of all Alcofree is located here on the Central Coast. Check them out at www.alcofree.com.au or visit their bar at Ace Crescent Tuggerah. Mention ‘iMag’ and they will even give you FREE tastings.

Bistro 14 gold star dining experience! The Hardy’s Bay Club has had a makeover of great proportions and has new owners that do not mind letting the professionals they have hired run the show and they sure can.

Their menu features fresh ingredients sourced locally where possible, especially the seafood, house-baked breads and daily specials, which make for a very interesting menu.

We started with the freshest local oysters and the mushroom arancini balls with grilled eggplant: tight balls of al dente rice with a crunchy crust that had us wanting more, they were wonderful. “One of the best we have eaten” Emma had the king prawn orecchiette pasta with chilli, lemon, cherry tomatoes and garlic & rosemary crumbs so delicious. I had barramundi with a crisp crunchy skin & vegetables. The skin was like crackling, the fish tender, moist and totally mouth-watering. Emily had the Thai beef salad with crispy noodles and toasted cashews; I had to have a taste as it looked so good. It was just absolutely the most delicious dish, eaten very rare as she likes it and I do to. The beef was aromatic, tender and just won me over completely. Food The servings were so generous we worth skipped desert: we will have to try travelling for! them on our next visit.

We were ready to order, after changing our minds several times as there was so much we wanted to try.

Bistro 14 has a gold star from us; this is definitely “FOOD WORTH TRAVELING FOR”

There are many changes already and more to come. Emma and I joined Emily Carryer the Club Coordinator for dinner on a Saturday night. We arrived at 5.45 and to our surprise the car park was already quite full. There were families here for dinner, visitors ready for a great night of food and entertainment and locals proud to have a place they can call their own. This night a blues band was playing and they were so good, it wasn’t long before we were bopping to the music. Emily is gorgeous and will look forward to meeting you, lovely smiling faces will greet you at the bar or seat you to a table in the dining room. Actually the Club is set up so you can dine wherever you choose, outside on the deck or anywhere inside. Bistro 14’s team is led by Damien Battye, former Head Chef at Audrey’s, Macmasters Beach and a recipient of a SMH Chefs Hat. Not many of them on the Coast so you know you are in good hands.

Electricity the unseen threat Over the last few editions of iMag I’ve spoken about how you can better protect yourself from viruses and scams on the Internet. In this edition I’m going to continue Richard Krupka the theme of protection but Owner PC Wrangler with a focus on something that can be even more dangerous, electricity. We are all aware of the potential dangers of electricity and the devastating consequences if something were to wrong. Let’s be clear, the threat is real. The image in this article was taken by myself late last year that resulted in a destroyed PC. It could have been much worse and you should always use surge boards. Ok, so what traits make a good quality board? Below is a list of 10 things you need to know when purchasing a surge board. • Response Time: Electrical equipment is damaged after 8ns. Some boards sold have a response time of 25ns. Boards must respond in <8ns, anymore and it’s a waste of money. In fact, anything >3ns is probably a waste of money. • Power Filtration: Actively improves the quality of the power delivered to electrical equipment by regulating noise, power factor correction and impulse correction. • Clamping Voltage: Maximum voltage that is received before the board reacts. You want a board that reacts at no more than 275volts. Anymore, what’s the point? • Joules: When a power disturbance strikes, the energy must be directed somewhere, preferably not into your equipment. That’s where joules come in. They are the reserve bank that takes the hit and absorbs the extra voltage. Joules are also non-replenishable, meaning, when they are used they are gone for good. Once all the joules are used up, the board cannot protect your equipment from further surges.

58

www.monthlyimag.com.au

Note: This is very important as most people believe that a surge board is a surge board forever and they just wack them under the desk, safe secure and forgotten, this is not true (and dangerous). • Fire retardant plastic: you don’t want the board catching fire and burning the place down. • Individual port protection/isolation: You want the board to protect on every port so that if something dies in port 2, the fault does not flow to other devices connected and back into the buildings internal grid. • Australian Made: so you can be sure the board is designed to Australian conditions and adheres to the Australian standard. Overseas boards are not specifically designed to Australian conditions and many countries operate on 200volts rather than 240volts. • Equipment Warranty: does the manufact-urer put its money where its mouth is? • Replacement Warranty • Auto power cut-off: When the joule bank is depleted and unable to protect you, will it cut power or continue to work? One of the biggest problems I see is boards that don’t cut-off, giving the customer a false sense of security.
