Winter on the Coast From the Editor
Welcome to the Central Coast for July & August. This issue embraces not only our winter but also spring and the Springtime Festival. Make a Scarecrow & join in the fun of going into the competition, see page 12 for instructions. One of my favourite things to do on a Sunday morning is to go to the Farmers Markets at Gosford Racecourse. Every week is better than the last with new stalls joining in. Imagine my surprise to find the boys from Café Camino cooking the most delicious Paella. Then I found my favourite German Sausages, made by a butcher in Taree and cooked for us from Oma’s Kitchen in Newcastle. I just love coming here every Sunday to buy the freshest produce, if you have not yet been, this is a must do so put it in your diary. We have a new Gallery Café in Wyong for you to visit, Nadia’s Gallery Café p14, great coffee and Art only a few doors away from Bobbie P Gallery. I also introduce you to Marians Flowers and The

Gosford/Edogawa Commemorative Garden Gosford formed a Sister City Agreement with Edogawa, Japan in 1988. A gift from Edogawa, the garden was officially opened in September 1994 and is based on a traditional ‘shuyu’ (strolling style) garden, incorporating Japanese features. With meandering pathways, a roofed Japanese pavilion overlooking the Koi pond, raked dry stone garden and traditional Japanese teahouse, the Gosford/Edogawa
Commemorative Garden offers a tranquil setting in which to relax and enjoy art and nature. Philosophy of the Japanese garden Chinese and Japanese philosophy tell us that ones life can be lived more fully by being open to the universal rhythms of nature. A Japanese garden seeks to give us a tranquil setting for meditation and reflection. We hope you enjoy your visit to this garden and find pleasure in its beauty and tranquility. Informal tours detailing the Japanese aesthetics of the garden are conducted by trained guides every Wednesday at 11.00 am or by request. The garden is open daily from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm. Entry is free. Gosford Regional Gallery & Gosford-Edogawa Commemorative Garden 36 Webb Street, East Gosford 2250 Phone: 02 4325 0056 www.gosfordregionalgallery.com/garden.htm

A history of painted finishes From the beginning of our time, we have been using painted finishes to enhance and colour our lives. Pre-civilization, the people around the world dipped their fingers into wet clay to decorate the walls of caves where they dwelled. Along with burnt wood and different coloured clays they developed a basic kind of paint. Over the centuries we discovered adding animal fats, honey or egg would make the colours more durable. With the pleasure that painted finishes gave to our senses we continued to develop and grow, with improving the durability and colour range becoming a constant demand. With the beginning of civilization, wealth, power and the use of monuments, the demand for more and brighter colours lead to the development and use of precious stones and minerals for colour, the brighter and more complex the painting the more prestigious the image of the items. Examples of the stones are malachite and azurite for green colourings, orpiment and cadmium for yellow colours, lapis lazuli for the brilliant blues and the list goes on. So as you can see Painted Finishes are as old as mankind and every generation and culture has embraced them and found their own signature with them. Sydney Male Choir and Warringah Concert Brass Band Sunday 30th August 2015 Sydney Male Choir in concert with the Warringah Concert Brass Band at St Peters Catholic College, Tuggerah. The Sydney Male Choir is a not for profit organization which has, “Bringing joy through song, as its major objective: joy to ourselves as singers, and joy to our audiences. The Choir started in Petersham in 1913 and has sung at every ANZAC Day dawn service in Martin Place since its inception in 1930. In 2013 the choir had the honour of being invited by the Department of Veteran Affairs to be part of the ANZAC Day dawn service at Villers-Bretonneux - a euphoric way to celebrate our centenary. We are proud of our long history which has only been possible by maintaining the very highest musical standards. This tradition is upheld today by our professional Music Director, Dr Houston Dunleavy, Accompanist, Dewi Liu, and a committed group of over 60 singers prepared to attend rehearsals every week. Our roots may have been
local, but today our singers come from a radius of more than 150km around Sydney. Such is their enthusiasm for vocal harmony! Singing in four part harmonies, we add the full and rich sounds of mature male voices to our diverse repertoire that includes songs from the shows, the movies, the pop charts, stirring Welsh hymns, folk songs, popular songs, operatic extracts, sacred works and even a few nonsense rhymes. The Sydney Male Choir is proud to be part of this years Yarramalong Valley Spring Festival.

The Carousel This historic icon has charmed and delighted young and old at The Entrance since 1930. It has seen a number of owners since its arrival in Australia from France in the early 1900s and is now part of the National Trust classified Haas Family carnival, a family that has 400 years of carnival ancestry. The carousel, which was built in the late 1800s in Germany, was originally ‘powered’ by a pony but was converted to steam at the turn of the century. It remained steam driven until the 1950s when an old chev. engine was installed, and was converted to electricity in the 1970s. Its reed pipe organ, operated by bellows, remained in commission until 1950. Music is now supplied by tape, although the organ front has been restored. The carousel has pride of place on The Entrance waterfront where it is visited by not only today’s children, but by the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents of those children.
What to See & Do The Pelican Feeding in The Entrance Memorial Park is a highlight of any visit. Daily at 3.30pm The Entrance Heritage Walk is one of the best on the Central Coast and visitors will also enjoy the Coast to Lake Walk. Vera’s Watergarden is a children’s water playground opposite the Pelican Feeding area

MARINE RESCUE Central Coast
Some Tips for Boating in Winter Some cold-weather boating hints to implement before you leave the ramp or mooring. They may help keep you safe on the water this winter. • Tell someone exactly where you will be going. Give them a map or GPS coordinates. • Tell a relative when you will be home. Call if you are going to be late. • Write and leave the names of the people with you, your car’s brand and number plate plus details of the boat ramp where it will be parked. • Check the weather forecast before you go. • Only use waterways with which you are familiar and only go out on mild days. • Check your marine radio before you go and take your mobile phone in a waterproof container. • Take a GPS along with pre-set coordinates, so if darkness or fog sets in you still have a way to get home. • Take extra batteries for everything that is battery operated. • Take extra clothing, food, water and a first-aid kit, all in waterproof bags. • Make sure your boat has enough fresh fuel and is in good operating condition for winter weather. • Make sure your navigation lights and torch are operating. • Check you have flares on board in case of emergency. • Wear a life jacket. Cold water quickly saps your strength, so wearing a life jacket could give you the time you need to re-board the boat if you fall overboard.

Umina Beach continues to perform In recent years, after much hard work by the Peninsula Chamber of Commerce and Gosford City Council, Umina Beach has become a thriving retail centre boasting all the major supermarkets (Coles, Woolworths and Aldi) together Bunnings Hardware and McDonalds. These anchor retailers have complimented a host of smaller retailers, service stations (Shell and Caltex), banks (Commonwealth and Westpac), cafes and restaurants in what is now arguably one of the best retail strip shopping centres on the Central Coast. All the major retailers are spread along West Street with easy pedestrian access and generous Council car parking to the rear of the busy main street. The town centre
has developed a busy daytime café culture and has become the destination of choice for shoppers looking to fulfil their daily shopping needs. Residents have easy access to two major medical centres, Council library, Post Office, chemists and newsagency all of which provide a range of essential services. Umina’s resurgence came from the highly successful Peninsula Chamber Mainstreet Program and Gosford City Council’s Financial Strategy which saw the streets upgraded, power lines placed underground, the planting of Cabbage Tree Palms and repaving of footpaths. The upgrade led to renewed property owner confidence and major investments from key retailers who now underpin the local economy and provide employment for over 500 locals. The main access, West Street, runs parallel to Ocean Beach and Umina Beach which boasts some of the safest beaches on the Central Coast patrolled by both volunteer lifesavers and Council Lifeguards. The proximity to the beach has greatly influenced the seaside culture of the town which is only minutes from the award winning NRMA Ocean Beach Resort & Holiday Park and the Umina Precinct Park. With excellent public bus connections to both Woy Woy and Ettalong Beach, the town is ideally located to serve the large surrounding residential catchment and cater for holiday makers during the busy summer period. Enjoy the bustling town and its wonderful retailers.

Peninsula Theatre Woy Woy The world's most famous fictional sleuth adds a novel chapter to his repertoire with playwright Jeffrey Hatcher's electrifying new whodunit Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Suicide Club, which opens at Woy Woy’s Peninsula Theatre on Friday August 14. The play is an inventive mash-up of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's iconic characters and the Robert Louis Stevenson short story The Suicide Club, providing an clever, intricately woven new mystery for Holmes. CATS The Musical Following its triumphant season in London’s West End, the acclaimed revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s recordbreaking musical CATS comes to Sydney from 30 October for a strictly limited season.
This hit revival, which was reworked for the most recent season in the West End by the original creative team including Director Trevor Nunn and Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber – received excellent reviews and extended its season due to overwhelming demand. The 2015 Olivier Award-nominated CATS introduces a rapping ‘street cat’ in the famous Rum Tum Tugger role, who performs some serious breakdancing moves. Based on T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, the show
is set amongst a larger-than-life junkyard playground and is alive with our favourite feline characters including Rum Tum Tugger, Mr. Mistoffelees, Macavity, Jennyanydots, Old Deuteronomy, Grizabella and Skimbleshanks. The Jellicle Cats come out to play on one special night of the year – the night of the Jellicle Ball. One by one they tell their stories for the amusement of Old Deuteronomy, their wise and benevolent leader, who must choose one of the Cats to ascend to The Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a whole new Jellicle life. www.catsthemusical.com/australia

Conservation Month at the Australian Reptile Park Calling conservation kids everywhere! It’s Conservation Month at the Australian Reptile Park these holidays and there are stacks of cool conservation animals and activities on offer! We have dingo pups! Parents “Adina” and “Fred” have given birth to 5 gorgeous puppies and we are over the moon! During the June/July school holidays, visitors will have the opportunity to meet the pups and even have their photo taken with them! The Park will also be introducing a NEW experience for visitors. ‘Animal Encounters’ gives guests the opportunity to get up and personal with some of the stars of the Australian Reptile Park. You can choose to have your encounter with either our newest additions the dingo pups, Hugo the Galapagos Tortoise or ‘Kraken’ our Komodo Dragon. Each ‘Animal Encounter’ lasts for 15-20 minutes and offers participants a hands-on, fully interactive, once in a lifetime experience! They are available for booking online or on the day of your visit at the front desk. Our special Conservation Show will run daily at 12:30pm and educate visitors about the Park’s most threatened species, including the Purebred dingo, Greater bilby, Komodo Dragon, a variety of frogs, Woma python, Ring Tailed Possum and Alligator snapping turtle. We will also be bringing back our ever popular ‘Conservation Workshops’ where participants are able to learn about how to attract native wildlife to their back yard by learning to build possum boxes and frog ponds. In addition, our Kids 2 Keeper workshops run throughout holidays, with an emphasis on conservation. Kids can learn about conservation and get their hands dirty at the same time! Food worth travelling for
The Italian Restaurant Review Azzuro Blu Wharf, The Entrance
The Italian Restaurant at The Entrance has a modern approach to Italian cuisine. It is situated in a great location, at the edge of the lagoon, overlooking the sea. A group of six of us went to eat there on a beautiful winter’s Saturday, which was warm and comfortable enough for us to sit in the outside area. We chose a bottle of Squealing Pig Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc to complement our meal. We jointly decided to share the seafood starters, which was a gastronomically wonderful experience. It consisted of seafood stuffed cucumbers, prosciutto wrapped scallops, goat’s cheese stuffed capsicum wrapped in smoked salmon, and my favourite: sautéed prawns with pink grapefruit, all presented on pop-in-your-mouth Chinese soup spoons.
We enjoyed a wide variety of main courses ranging from traditional gnocchi Food with a delicious arrabiata worth sauce, a scotch fillet with travelling for! sautéed prawns on a bed of mashed potatoes, two crispy salmons served on a bed of tomato salsa with avocado, a lobster Mornay served with a rucola salad, roma tomatoes and parmesan cheese and a very well-executed duck with salted caramel sauce and roasted truss tomatoes. The journey to the facilities was tricky as the toilets are situated outside the building, but it was a covered walkway so one would not get wet if it rained. Desserts continued to be delicious and varied. We experienced the panna cotta with mixed berries, crème brulee, apple crumble and a coconut gelato presented in a martini glass with dark chocolate. Coffees were served by very attentive staff and the good service did add to the great enjoyment of the meal. We would highly recommend the Italian Restaurant. Emilia Risi

Non Alcoholic Drinks from Alcofree
the same sophisticated taste, your choice of drinks is pathetic. And this poor choice even extends to restaurants, pubs and clubs.
Drinking is such an enjoyable part of life!
Well, we’ve discovered Alcofree. At Alcofree they believe in offering drinkers and nondrinkers a choice – a choice of a growing range of non-alcoholic and alcohol free beverages to suit every occasion and almost every palate. Their range of nonalcoholic beers, wines, ciders, cocktails and more is the best you will find.
Almost all of our social occasions include drinks of some kind, and at the end of a long day’s work it’s hard to beat the relaxing feeling of a lazy refreshing drink. And who doesn’t enjoy a long cool drink with their meal or when vegging-out in front of the entertainment box? The range of drinks available to us is huge, both at the supermarket and the bottleshop. Huge that is if you drink alcohol or are happy with sugary water-based drinks. But if you don’t drink alcohol, or are cutting down, and want

Busby's Restaurant Review On a picture perfect day Klara, Emma, Ian and I went to a restaurant worth travelling for again and again. Busby’s at Wisemans Ferry was that wonderful surprise you always hope for. The menu has all your favourites, the ones you look for but never find at one venue. We all chose something different so we could taste each other’s meals. So glad we did. We started with the Seared succulent Scallops, perfectly cooked in with virgin Salsa, Chive Oil and Prosciutto Scrolls. We added the King Prawn Pappadelle (freshly-made pasta) in garlic, chilli, basil and home-grown tomatoes white wine sauce with roasted capsicum and black olives, topped with shaved parmesan. The subtle blend of the garlic and chilli left us wanting to have this again next visit. We shared these two dishes as entrees between the four of us. They complimented each other beautifully. We eyed off the salt and pepper quail (GF) on crisp veg. salad with chilli lime mayonnaise which the neighbouring table had. They assured us it was equally wonderful. (Next time). Emma chose the Lamb Loin with Mediterranean Potato and Vegetable Galette, Klara the Barramundi Fillet and King Prawns, Ian had the Freshly Made Pappadelle with bacon, mushrooms, spinach leaves and semi dried tomatoes in a creamy white wine sauce with pecorino cheese, and I chose the Sirloin Steak with Red Wine Jus with salad

and homemade chips.
We each had a taste of each other’s and it would be impossible to fault any meal. All delicious with the meat and fish dishes moist, succulent and perfectly cooked. The sauces were subtle and complimentary to the dishes, meal sizes were great and the wine list was well thought out and reasonably priced. Something for every taste and pocket. The children’s menu is well-chosen and priced as well. The desserts were so beautifully presented it seemed a shame to eat them but we sacrificed art for the sake of our tastebuds and they were as fabulous as the rest of the meal had been.

Strawberry Flan
Caramelised Maple Creams
Klara chose the Lime and Coconut Cheesecake, Emma the Chocolate Mocha Tart with espresso ice cream and Toasted cinnamon Macadamia nuts, Ian had a Strawberry and crème friache flan with chocolate motifs and I chose the Caramelised Maple Creams with Toffeed Banana and Caramel Wafer. Hard to pick a favourite however, I never choose cheesecake as I make my baked Lemon cheesecake (from our Restaurant days at Old Courthouse Minmi) however I must say the Lime and Coconut cheesecake was light, flavoursome and my favourite. We are looking forward to our next visit to Busby’s and we strongly recommend this lovely restaurant with its’ fabulous food and lovely staff to everyone. Worth the drive and a great way to spend a day. Enjoy. 5557 Old Northern Road, Wisemans Ferry Ph: (02) 4566 4787

Social Media How to stay safe
Richard Krupka Owner PC Wrangler
In the last issue we talked about social media, what it was and what it does. Continuing on in our series, this time let’s take a look at security and how to stay safe.
We hear almost daily about internet scams, identity theft and online fraud yet many social media users are unknowingly exposing themselves online. So how do we stay safe? Be Mysterious Limit the amount of personal information you display online. Most social media platforms provide fields to input all your personal data but that doesn’t mean you have to. Unless you’re a business avoid sharing your address and phone number, as well as birth date and other sensitive information, especially bank details, credit cards and PIN numbers. Keep It Private Know how your privacy options and settings work and use them. Facebook for example, gives users multiple and varied privacy options that allow you to control who see every piece of information you share. Photographs may be shared with just a select group of your network or you may choose to share a certain piece of information globally. Stranger Danger Keep your network small and restricted to people you know. The internet provides a certain level of anonymity, and while it has allowed access to new long distance friends and bought the world into our homes, it is important to ensure the person you are sharing information with at the other end is indeed who they say they are. Health Checks It is vital when using the internet to have good quality firewall and antivirus software and keep it up to date. Social media is no exception. With the ability to share links and documents and the use of third party software programs, social media can
58
www.monthlyimag.com.au
expose you to malicious attacks that can leave you vulnerable and be costly to correct. Content Control The internet is a public resource so as a general rule don’t post anything you are not comfortable with the world seeing. If you wouldn’t advertise publicly that your house will be unoccupied while you are away for the next week, don’t do it on social media! And remember what goes online stays online. Parental Guidance Most social media platforms have a minimum age requirement for children to join. Facebook, for example requires children be a minimum age of 13 to access the site and its content. With children it is especially important to monitor their internet usage and social media is no exception. A great way to monitor your children’s social media activity is to be ‘friends’ with their accounts. Make sure you know who they are talking too and what they are posting. Now that we have touched on the darker side of social media, in the next issue we will conclude our social media series by looking at how you can best utilise these tools both personally and for business.
