It’s all about the ‘Blanket’ It was a cold Saturday afternoon in my shop, the wind was howling, Meagan and I both decided we would love to be curled up on the lounge with our Blankets. This is when the beautiful Blanket stories came out. Louise, who is an amazing crocheter herself, tells the story of the rug she made with all the skills her grandmother taught her, and she snuggles into it reflecting on the great gift of knowledge that her grandmother gave her. I told the story of my blanket, one of my most treasured possessions. My girlfriend had it on her lounge and every time I went there I would snuggle into it. She had hand crocheted it herself, and when she gave it to me, I was so happy because I loved it. Meagan had two stories, one of a beautiful crocheted Bedspread that her Grandmother had made in 1920 for her glory box, and it has been a treasured possession in her family ever since. The workmanship in it is amazing. Meg also has a blanket that she loves, it was crocheted from all the scrap wool that her best friend’s mother had, and it is a work of art that Meg adores. Then in walked Annette with another story - she had brought in her blanket which had been beautifully crocheted by Mrs McGinnis even though she was blind. Annette has had it for years and loves it. Then there were more, everyone seemed to have a blanket story. It was lovely to hear the stories and the sentiment that was attached to them. We all agreed that from babies on, we all love our blankets and being underneath them, the world was a better place. If you would like to send me all your Blanket stories I would love to see them. Send them to me at 1/111 Gavenlock Rd. Tuggerah or email info@ dbapaintedfinishes.com.au

Bowen Therapy Bowen therapy has been developed into a modality used to treat many imbalances, discomforts and conditions. A large percentage of pain that we experience in the body is due to postural imbalances, which affects the mechanics of the body. The pain is usually a symptom or effect from the postural imbalance and most body therapists tend to go straight for the pain and rub or treat the sore bit. All though this usually feels good and temporarily relieves the pain, it does not fix the issue and in most cases the pain will return with time, however, to correctly treat this issue, we need to dig deeper using assessments and testing, to find the underlying cause of the problem and treat the cause, resulting in the symptoms to subside and along with selfhelp exercises and/or stretches bring about a longer lasting, if not permanent solution to the problem. Bowen therapy can also be used to treat and/or

help alleviate symptoms of medical conditions such as Planter Faciatis, Tennis Elbow, Chronic Headaches, Migraines, Asthma, Parkinsons, MS and Cerebral Palsy just to name a few. There are also specific treatments for organs of the abdominal cavity based on the Traditional Chinese Medicine technique of Chi Nei Sang. There are hormonal treatments used for treating many issues from painful periods to help with pregnancy to menopause, developed using ayurvedic principles. With such an amazing therapy developed and available right here in Australia, if you haven’t experienced it yet or you have an issue that other modalities just don’t seem to be helping, then give Bowen therapy a try.

The Carousel at The Entrance

The Carousel This historic icon has charmed and delighted young and old at The Entrance since 1930. It has seen a number of owners since its arrival in Australia from France in the early 1900s and is now part of the National Trust classified Haas Family carnival, a family that has 400 years of carnival ancestry. The carousel, which was built in the late 1800s in Germany, was originally ‘powered’ by a pony but was converted to steam at the turn of the century. It remained steam driven until the 1950s when an old chev. engine was installed, and was converted to electricity in the 1970s. Its reed pipe organ, operated by bellows, remained in commission until 1950. Music is now supplied by tape, although the organ front has been restored. The carousel has pride of place on The Entrance waterfront where it is visited by not only today’s children, but by the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents of those children.

The Peninsula Ettalong Beach, Umina Beach & Woy Woy

Pearl Beach from Mount Ettalong Lookout Š Ken Duncan Photography

The Peninsula a truly special place For those who live on the Peninsula, we all appreciate how truly special the area is with its safe and beautiful beaches, picturesque waterways, accessible National Parks, vibrant town centres, good transport and easy access to Sydney. Woy Woy is one of the busiest rail stations in New South Wales as locals commute to Sydney for work each morning and return each night to the relaxed Peninsula lifestyle. It is no wonder that more people choose to live and visit the Peninsula as they discover its wonderful attributes. Few places can boast one of the best ferry rides in Australia from Ettalong Beach to Palm Beach via the Palm Beach Ferry or the spectacular train ride from Woy Woy to Sydney via the Hawkesbury River. Nor can you ignore the wonderful Ettalong Beach Foreshore, the Woy Woy Waterfront or the many spectacular lookouts and National Parks. Without doubt our beaches are the cleanest and

safest on the Central Coast boasting Ettalong Beach, Umina and Ocean Beach, Pearl Beach and Patonga. Importantly, our town centres have become more vibrant with the bustling Umina Beach one of the busiest retail strip shopping centres on the Central Coast. This is supported by major shopping facilities in Woy Woy including Deepwater Plaza and Peninsula Plaza and boutique shopping in Ettalong Beach. In recent years we have seen the emergence of a great cafĂŠ culture and a range of high quality restaurants especially in the Ettalong Beach village centre. With great schools, terrific services and a full range of shopping centres, the demographics of the Peninsula are changing with young families and professionals moving in to complement our older population. No longer just somewhere to retire (and why not), the Peninsula has become a place for younger people to raise families and enjoy a lifestyle that is the envy of Sydney. Come visit the Peninsula and discover the reasons why others have chosen to make this area their home and a holiday destination.

MARINE RESCUE CENTRAL COAST

Woy Woy Little Theatre presents Frederick Knott’s “Wait Until Dark” A sinister con man and two ex-convicts have traced the location of a mysterious doll to the Greenwich Village apartment of Sam Hendrix and his blind wife, Susy. Sam had apparently been persuaded by a strange woman to transport the doll across the Canadian border. When the woman is murdered the situation becomes more urgent. The con man and his cronies convince Susy that the police have implicated Sam in the woman's murder, and the doll, which she believes is the key to his innocence, is evidence. Susy refuses to reveal its location and, with the help of a young neighbour, figures out she is the victim of a bizarre charade. A deadly game of cat and mouse ensues but Susy knows the only way she’ll survive is to play by her rules. Melinda Does Doris

After forging a dazzling country music career that has won her 6 Golden Guitars, and stunning audiences on Dancing with the Stars, Australian favourite, Melinda Schneider steps back

in time to pay homage to one of her musical heroes, Doris Day when she performs at Wests New Lambton on Sat 20 August. Following on from hugely successful capital city seasons of her theatre stage show DORIS, Melinda is bringing the songs from the show that audiences love so much to new territories in a concert format called Melinda Does Doris. Melinda’s love affair with Doris began when, in childhood, Melinda laid eyes on Calamity Jane, Doris Day’s 1953 film tour de force and was smitten by all she saw. “She was such a huge talent” she enthuses now, “a triple threat as they say – she could sing, dance and act. I thought then she was the best of everything a woman

can be and when I grew up I wanted to be just like her. This nostalgic celebration includes such timeless hits as “Sentimental Journey”, “Que Sera, Sera”, “Everybody Loves a Lover”, “Secret Love” and a whole slew of hits from “Calamity Jane”, “Love Me or Leave Me” and “The Pajama Game”. “I am really excited to be able to bring this wonderful music to smaller centres” Melinda says, “I am constantly being asked when are you bringing the Doris music here Melinda, and by putting together this concert version of the show, it all becomes possible!” Saturday 20th August Wests New Lambton Tickets available from the club phone: 49351 200 www.westsnewcastle.com.au www.melindaschneider.com work – indeed, it will be the first performance in Australia, so the Central Coast will play an important part in rescuing this fine composer from obscurity. The Chorale is certainly excited about performing this work.

The Central Coast Chorale presents its second concert for 2016:

Lacrimae “A Mother’s Tears”

Sunday 7th August at 2.30 pm at St Patrick’s Catholic Church in East Gosford.

The theme is taken from two of the most beautiful settings of the “Stabat Mater” which reflects on the sorrow and grief of Mary as she looks up at her son, Jesus, dying on the cross.

The major work of the program, the “Stabat Mater” is by Emanuele d’Astorga, surely one of music’s most enigmatic composers, whose life was extraordinary to say the least.

The program will also contain excerpts from Pergolesi’s haunting “Stabat Mater” and a new work “Sunt lacrimae rerum” by Christopher Bowen, all exploring the theme of “tears”. We invite all lovers of fine classical music to share our journey of discovery, which has unearthed one of music’s hidden treasures.

Born into Sicilian nobility, d’Astorga’s precocious musical gifts were soon recognized. He worked in Rome, Barcelona, and Vienna before fleeing to Lisbon and then into oblivion. He in fact became quite a cult figure after his death with plays, books and even an opera written about his bizarre life. This is a rare opportunity to hear the extraordinary beauty of this

Crossroads Chamber Music Festival

Central Coast is known for its beautiful beaches and its wonderful countryside. Less well known is its rich chamber music heritage. Two outstanding locals in this realm are the internationally famous concert artists Charmian Gadd (pictured), violin, and Erin Helyard, harpsichord. They work in close association with the Central Coast Conservatorium and a wide range of other local musicians to bring us many exciting concerts each year. Perhaps most exciting is the upcoming

Concertante Ensemble

Crossroads Festival; a series of four concerts at the Greenway Chapel, Kincumber, on the weekend of 20-21 August. Featuring Charmian & Friends and the Concertante Ensemble, the programme includes a baroque concert, one devoted to the chamber music of Brahms, another devoted to Mozart, and a closing concert devoted to Haydn. A further concert at Brentwood Village in Kincumber on the Saturday will feature some of Australia's most talented young musicians in a varied program of sparkling solo and chamber music. Subscription tickets include lunch on the Sunday. Further details and tickets are available from the Central Coast Conservatorium, ph. 4324 7477. Saturday 30th July 12pm till 5pm mingara Recreation Club Tumbi Umbi

Wyong Drama Group presents the world premiere

SEPIA SECRETS

Written by our own Andy Kabanoff This sweetly moving play will resonate with many of us with immigrant background. It will touch hearts and make connections with both the past and the present. A retired Australian man makes a trip to Europe to retrace his parents' footsteps and hopefully to find answers to questions that have troubled him. In Dubrovnik and in an Austrian village the family story unfolds; one which explores the confusion and loss caused by war and revolution, and the reasons his parents, like so many others, wanted to make a fresh start a long way from the tragedies they'd experienced. This is Andy's story, and his parents' story, but also the story of so many Australians – people past and present who hope for a better future in a new land. Performances: Friday 1 to Saturday 9 July at 8pm. Tickets $25. There is 10% discount for group of 10+ and reduced rates for under 18. Free tea and coffee. Matinees: Saturday 2 and 9, Sunday 3 at 2 pm. Other evening performances on Friday 8th, Saturdays 2nd and 9th with a special performance on Wednesday 6th all at 8pm. Escape to Vie Spa” When you enter, the feeling of calmness washes over you and you are relaxed and ready to enjoy your’ treatment. Emma (my cousin) joined me again as we had such a wonderful experience on our last visit. Emma had AROMA- FUSION, Back Exfoliation & Massage. Essential Aroma Facial with a Nourishing Foot Treatment. 90 Mins. This is the treatment she had booked again from her last visit. The treatment was with Natalie. I had the AYURVEDIC HOT OIL MASSAGE & COCOON 90 Mins. Hot therapeutic oil is continually poured into a ring of clay applied to the back before the oil is spread along the body’s energy pathways in combination with massage strokes to deliver pure relief for aches and pains. As an extra winter warmer you are covered in a complimentary warm hug of hydrating wrap to restore and nourish dry winter skin. Guaranteed to leave you feeling warm and fuzzy. I can recommend this wonderful treatment to everyone, especially if you are feeling a bit sore anywhere. My pamper treatment was with Cherish, thank you so much. I have not needed any back treatment now for 2 weeks. Emma and I were so pleased with the iKOU products used, that we bought them to use at home. Wrapped in a soft robe I joined Emma in The Lounge room for a T2 Tea. We relaxed while listening to the water feature serenading us into a wonderful, blissful state. Leaving here was not what we wanted to do but you can’t stay for ever. We will now have to wait for our next visit. I hope you enjoy yours as much as we did. The Italian Restaurant

Foodth wor ling l traveor! f

We had had a scary start to the day, driving in the pouring rain and blowing a tyre right off the Volvo halfway to the Central Coast. We have been to the Italian restaurant many times but thought a rainy day and the new menu were perfect matches. One hitch - Klara has become Gluten intolerant however the staff were so helpful, and sorted out every item. The menu is clearly marked with (GF) to make it easy. We shared most items so we could comment.

eater) and Klara the Chicken Ripieni breast filled with sundried tomato, chorizo and ricotta wrapped in prosciutto with mushroom, bacon Marsala sauce. The mains were perfectly done with tasty potato gallettes and broccolini. Choice of Salad or vegetables is readily available if you want to change accompaniments.

Entrees: We had a new dish Seafood Share (for 2), a selection of chilli lime Scampi; Prosciutto-wrapped Scallops; Lobster Ricotta Chorizo mousse stuffed cucumber; cream-cheese filled roasted capsicum wrapped in smoked salmon. Beautifully presented with such lovely tastes this platter was a delight. We accompanied this with the freshest oysters natural we have ever had.

Sweets; a delightful cheesecake, Creme Brulee, and wild strawberry & Balsamic Mouse with chocolate sauce. There is a choice of 13 sweets and it is hard to choose, ours were fantastic.

Mains: I had the Meat and Seafood Grill, Angus Sirloin, Med-Rare topped with prawns mussel, calamari, fish, scallop and bug with Citrus Chilli Aoli. Ian had Grilled Scampi (GF) with Garlic Parsley marinade served on Salad (he is a lighter

Our favourite Italian restaurant and its staff ensured the day improved. The new items on the menu were superb, the chef blew us away and we felt 150% better than we had. I thoroughly recommend this restaurant. They provide for every taste and pocket.

The Coast Restaurant & Bar

A wonderful change has come to the waterfront in Gosford with the establishment of the Coast Restaurant. Owner Alain Alpha has got a great team together to look after your every need. The location is superb, and the day was idyllic: it was warm, sunny and the reflections on the water created a relaxed, lazy afternoon feeling. Giselle Foundrey, our waitress, was knowledgeable about the menu and what choices to recommend. Klara, Dawn, Emma and I chose a variety of entrees. We had the freshly dusted calamari fillets with harissa aioli, which were tender, the authentic buffalo burrata with tomatoes - subtly herbed and delicious, the soft shell crab tacos with tartar salsa and the prawn chilli, cherry tomato bruchetta. These last two dishes were both filled with amazing mouth-watering flavours and were devoured within minutes. For main course we chose a gluten free pizza base topped with a slow cooked beef ragout with jalapenos, which was a great combination of taste and texture. (There are other unique and authentic Italian choices on the pizza menu that we would have loved to try.) We also had grilled salmon fillet with a tomato coriander salsa, roast chat potatoes, and French green beans. The fish was moist and well accompanied by the beans and crispy potatoes. We added a superb Mediteranean inspired haloumi salad that had roasted pumpkin, zucchini, fresh rocket, pine nuts and a delicious pesto dressing. Great creativity and careful execution was on display by head chef Arnold Underwood and sous chef Lewis Hilaire. We finished our meal with a light chocolate mousse trio, a saucy sticky date pudding and a gluten free orange and almond cake that was better than most! Floor manager Kayla Murphy gave us a heads up about the cocktail

bar that has just been completed and on upcoming events. Coast has a new winter menu that does not disappoint. It is a great venue for all ages, celebrations, dates and without a doubt, for good food experiences! Coast is definitely food worth travelling for! Emilia Krumm

Looking for great Chinese food on the Coast? I had the pleasure of attending a luncheon recently at the Black Sesame Restaurant in East Gosford with the Imag Team. I hadn’t set foot inside this restaurant for probably 25 years when I remember lots of red everywhere, so was pleasantly surprised that new owners May, Zeng-Yuan, Chris and Timothy had updated everything and the new decor was very impressive. Busby’s Restaurant & Café

It was a crisp clear day when Klara, Emma and I drove to Wisemans Ferry to dine at Busby’s restaurant and cafe. We sat on the balcony with a gorgeous view. To start Klara had the house-smoked salmon and horseradish crème crepe roulade with salsa verde, and orange fennel and pomegranate salad. Emma had hand rolled veal ravioli (served al dente) in tomato sugo with Buffalo mozzarella, fried basil leaves and parmesan wafer. I had the chicken rice paper rolls (which are gluten and dairy free) with sweet chilli vinaigrette, sweet soy, coriander ginger pesto, julienne vegetable salad and fried shallots. The service was good, with very attentive wait staff. For main course Klara had a delicious tender cabernet sauvignon braised beef cheek on creamed mash potato with bean medley, roasted cherry tomatoes and parsley oil. Emma had sweet crispy skinned duck breasts on baby bok choy,

I had the for! papardelle pasta (al dente) with a beautiful dill cream sauce, black mussels, lobster medallion, salmon, and king prawns served with shaved Grana Padana cheese. Pullman’s Magenta Shores Barretts Restaurant Locals Menu Review The dinner special for locals on a Thursday and Sunday night at Barretts Restaurant at Pullman’s Magenta Shores is worth travelling for! There were three of us for dinner and that worked well as we could try the three entrees, mains and desserts. The food is exquisitely tailored, not only using the region’s best produce, but also for people with intolerances. I started with the chicken and pistachio wrapped in speck with tomato chutney, charred onion and toasted sourdough, which was a gorgeous combination of textures. This dish went superbly with the Tai Nui sauvignon blanc. Emma enjoyed a Sandpiper pinot gris with the delicate flavours of the cured Huon salmon, watermelon gel, shaved fennel, lemon powder, crème fraiche, with yuzu, while Klara had the Euen Trails riesling that she had with Persian fetta, beetroot medley, pumpkin puree, toasted pine nuts, brioche crumb and petite mizuna - a great marriage of flavours. My main course was Petuna ocean trout, celeriac puree, spiced corn, grilled broccolini, semi dried tomatoes and dukkah, that I had with a Norfolk Rise merlot (we all wanted to come back to experience these unique combinations again!) There was also a tender pork fillet and braised neck, crushed turnips, red kale, grain mustard and pork jus (with a Mitchell cab. sauv). The pan-seared chicken breast, white bean cassoulet with chorizo,

winter vegetables and herb crust combined well with a Totara pinot noir. The dishes were superbly crafted and created by talented head chef Paul Clune and sous chef Gary Burns. It was hard to choose a favourite dessert! We had the white chocolate parfait with Bailey’s anglaise, coffee crumb and almond fudge, the rhubarb and apple crumble with cinnamon custard served with a delicious salted caramel ice cream and a date pudding with butterscotch sauce, vanilla bean ice cream and milk chocolate crumbs. The dishes were beautifully and delicately decorated with colourful, edible flowers – presentation details that did not go unnoticed! Barretts restaurant is a great destination for people who enjoy fine food and it is highly recommended! www.centralcoastimag.com.au

iGallery Horizons at Killcare Gallery of Art Directly overlooking beautiful Killcare Beach, Horizons Gallery of Art has over 100 magnificent works on display from many of the Central Coasts finest artists. The gallery was established in August 2015 by local multi-award winning photographer Brendon Weston and his wife Jude. As partners in their landscape photography business "FineArt Photography Australia" they travelled Australia photographing and exhibiting but have now found the perfect venue to show their work and have been joined by a number of other

celebrated local artists and photographers. Each exhibition lasts for around 8 weeks after which time it is refreshed with new art and artists to ensure the vibrancy and diversity of talent is maintained, and that a larger number of established and emerging artists are accommodated. Whilst the artists are often in attendance at the gallery, periodically a "Meet the Artist" function is held at which time they gather to discuss their methods and techniques and offer advice to clients and the public in general. These events are advertised on the Horizons at Killcare - Gallery of Art Facebook page. The venue is magnificent whatever the weather, with plenty of parking, fabulous views over the beach and Bouddi National Park, wheelchair access, lift, licensed restaurant/cafe, bar open, and first and foremost, fabulous art which can be added to your collection at reasonable prices.
