Autumn on the Central Coast MAY/JUNE

From the Editor May is usually still very mellow as the last month of autumn, but there is still so much for you to do out and about. When you look through our iMag, have your diary handy so you can fill the days in and have a wonderful time. Our restaurants and tearooms will have special Mother’s Day lunches and High Teas organised for your pleasure - book early so you won’t be disappointed before they do book out. I have some amazingly fantastic new businesses for you to visit. Ladies fashions all tried and tested by me, including Clara Boutique at Ettalong who sells the best non-slip coat hangers, as well as handmade one-off garments. I have been back several times. We also have Eco Diva, Two Ewes and OOO that’s Nice. Coralblu and Clara Boutique are both at Ettalong Markets, which also has some

fantastic new businesses like Indra - Fine Jewellers. If you love Amber and Silver you will find something of interest here. We introduce Fredo Pies at the Wyong end of Tuggerah; this is “Food worth Traveling for” with their delicious pies (see p13). Divine Tours will take you on a tour of the Vineyards in the Hunter (p4). Make your booking for the June long weekend. At last I have an assistant! Renee is now my sales manager and will help me to produce special new publications for your interest, the first being “iMag Celebrations”. More news on that soon. Please don’t forget to let our wonderful businesses know that you found them in iMag, as without them we would not have this FREE publication for your pleasure. Stay well; enjoy yourselves and HAPPY MOTHERS DAY to all the lovely Mums.

Autumn in the Valley A hidden fire burns perpetually upon the earth, the flame mysteriously consuming the leaves on the trees, Revealing a glow of colour that speaks of love and renewal. This year's Autumn brings a close to my second year of trade in the “old shop” at Yarramalong. In the time (which has flown) the shop has evolved taking in the needs and requirements of the valley people and visitors alike. It has been a joy and a

constant energizing to me. The pace and peace in the valley allows the luxury to connect with the people, hear their stories and share some experiences. My shop is not just a shop, it is a place that inspires and energizes me. I feel blessed to have had the experience and hope the growth and success continues for many years to come. SCULPTURE ON THE GREENS

A great attendance at the opening including Councilors from Wyong and Gosford Council, confirmed that this is the “Flagship Cultural Event for the Central Coast”, as described by Doug Eaton, the Mayor of Wyong. The Local Member, Mr. Weber, was astounded at the caliber of the exhibition. The exhibition has grown with over 75 large outdoor sculptures, including prominent National Sculptors, two international Sculptors from Berlin in Germany, and Columbia, 20 Central Coast Sculptors, and ‘Students on the Greens”, sponsored by Delta, culminating in over 20 individual sculpture of high artistic integrity on show at Kooindah Waters until the 25 May 2014. Free workshops to Five local Primary Schools resulted in over 250 beautiful drawings crafted by the 125, 5th and 6th class students. These images, drawn in the ‘3D Drawing Workshops’, are on show until 25th May, 2014 in both foyers of Wyong Council, and Kooindah Waters Golf and Spa Resort. ‘Community Grants, Wallarah 2’, allowed a local emerging artist to have a 4 month mentorship delivering a great work. If you are interested in the Mentorship Program, becoming a volunteer, or may like to attend Sculpture Workshops and develop new skills and passion, contact the Director of SOTG. The exhibition has a diverse range of styles and materials, highlighting the incredible ability of the exhibitors to call on their talents, ingenuity and creativity, to ensure the show will entertain, and raise questions from the viewing public.

Irene Anton, Germany

Michael Sheill

This years exhibition has attracted a great variety of works with five major stipends awarded to the following sculptors. Janek Wankowski with his work ‘Reef Song Complex’, John Fitzmaurice, ‘Rhythm of Life, Will Maguire, ‘Waymaker’, Michael Sheill, ‘Fools Vessel’, and Susanne Davey, ‘On The Edge’. These stipends are to encourage the artists to pursue their dream and make greater works that extend their capabilities and resourcefulness. The five adjudicators all chose several works independently, and then considered their choices with the other adjudicators to ensure the process was both transparent and fair. Sculpture on the Greens Inc. has a vision to extend the exhibition to become a major yearly event putting the Central Coast on the cultural map of Australia. The unusual adjudication process ensures that the ‘Game’ has a level playing field and is not a competition, but more an egalitarian method of encouraging local sculptors to network and associate with other great sculptors, to live the dream and grow as important members of our community.

The Carousel This historic icon has charmed and delighted young and old at The Entrance since 1930. It has seen a number of owners since its arrival in Australia from France in the early 1900s and is now part of the National Trust classified Haas Family carnival, a family that has 400 years of carnival ancestry. The carousel, which was built in the late 1800s in Germany, was originally ‘powered’ by a pony but was converted to steam at the turn of the century. It remained steam driven until the 1950s when an old chev. engine was installed, and was converted to electricity in the 1970s. Its reed pipe organ, operated by bellows, remained in commission until 1950. Music is now supplied by tape, although the organ front has been restored. The carousel has pride of place on The Entrance waterfront where it is visited by not only today’s children, but by the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents of those children.

Conservatorium along with guest artists. They recently held two successful Dance/Tango concerts in Greenway Chapel and in Toukley.

What's on at the Central Coast Conservatorium MAY/JUNE The events calendar for May and June is once again packed with regulars and a few surprises. Concertante Ensemble Concertante Ensemble is an ensemble comprising string tutors from the Central Coast

For their next concert on Sunday May 4th, the Ensemble will be joined by senior Conservatorium students performing Five Pieces for String Orchestra, Opus 44, No.4 by Paul Hindemith. Hindemith began his self education by becoming proficient on a total of fourteen instruments! “Five Pieces for String Orchestra" was written as study material to display a student’s virtuosity on the concert stage. Hindemith had a much more humble purpose these pieces though; to introduce young players to contemporary musical language. Also on the program will be Pergolesi’s Sinfonia in F; Mozart’s String Quintet in C Minor and Bartok’s Divertimento for Strings. Steve Smillie & Friends Now for something completely different, Steve Smillie & Friends will present a concert of jazz, pop and blues standards and some original material from master guitarist Smillie on Thursday May 8th in the Robert Knox Hall at Central Coast Conservatorium. Seen around the coast performing in his duo Open Fire with powerhouse vocalist Danielle Kelleher, the duo will be joined at this concert by trumpeter Kathy Morrison and guitarist Mauro Bortolin. A Whale of a Celebration! At Norah Head Lighthouse Sunday 6th July (10am-2pm)

This year we have an extra reason for a whale of a celebration! On Monday 31 March, the United Nation's International Court of Justice announced its ruling: Japan's whaling in the Antarctic is ‘not’ scientific – and therefore illegal – and must stop immediately! Nine years ago the Whaledreamers Festival was born as a proactive response to the news that Japan would begin hunting our Humpback Whales (Megaptera nouviangliae) down in the Antarctic. The collective whale dream of four Central Coast women – Colette Baron, Jeannie Lawson, Nikki Freeburn and Roberta Dixon-Valk – was to garner support for whales by engaging people across the Central Coast in the magic of the annual Humpback Whale migration; and by highlighting the wonder of whales and the incredible marine environment they call home. The Whaledreamers Festival is now an anticipated Central Coast event. This free family event features local bands, drumming, whale watching, conservation information, living art, interactive games and activities for all ages. Pack a picnic or support our wonderful local food vendors and titillate your taste buds! Bring your rug and join us for the 9th annual Whaledreamers Festival: 10am – 2pm, 6 July, Norah Head Lighthouse. Further info call Nikki Freeburn on 0415 207 887 or www.whaledreamers.org.au

MARINE RESCUE CENTRAL COAST

To Anchor effectively.... Your anchor must be the right size for your boat. The anchor must have chain and a long line attached. A 5m boat needs at least 7.5m of chain (1.5 times the length of the boat). Mark the anchor line at intervals of 7.5m so you know much line you have let out. Use the proper anchor scope. Scope is the ratio of the distance from the anchor to the boat’s deck, divided by the distance from deck to the bottom. Recommended scopes for anchoring are: • 5:1 for anchoring while aboard in good holding ground. • 7:1 if anchoring overnight. • 10:1 in a storm or in strong wind. For a water depth of 5m and a bow 1m above the water line (total 6m), let out 30m of line and chain. The scope is 5:1 (30 10 : 1 or more divided by 6). For rougher conditions

To deploy, head into the wind and bring the boat to a stop with the bow over the selected spot. Slowly lower the anchor while maintaining control of the rope; don’t let it run out fast. Shift into reverse and slowly back downwind while paying out the line. Shift into neutral and drift until the anchor line begins to tension. Make the anchor line fast, and then shift into reverse to set the anchor. To check if the anchor has dug in, test the tension on the anchor line with your hand. If there is continuous and strong tension, it is set. If the rope vibrates with just slight resistance, the anchor is not holding. Retrieve and redeploy the anchor or simply let out more rope until strong resistance is met. Remember if anchoring at night a 360° white anchor light is required.

5 : 1 - For calm conditions or temporary anchoring

2 : 1 - Too short. Anchor may not hold

What is Henry Kendall Cottage? Henry Kendall Cottage is the second oldest building on the Central Coast. It was built by Peter Fagan, an Irish convict who was transported to Sydney in 1821. In 1836 he bought the land and shortly after built the cottage which he named Cooranbean which means ‘creek that winds’. The cottage was built of local sandstone by convicts. The walls are approximately 45cm thick and the original roof was made of oak shingles. Peter and his wife Margaret raised a family of 9 children at Cooranbean and made a significant contribution to the area with their timber business, farming, mail contracts and breeding of cattle and race horses. The Cottage is named after Henry Kendall, one of the leading early Australian poets who is best known for his poem Bellbirds. He lived in the cottage and worked for the Fagan brothers for about 2 years.

“A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE” at Peninsula Theatre Woy Woy The highly anticipated Woy Woy Little Theatre production of Tennessee Williams’ Pulitzer Prize winning play A Streetcar Named Desire opens at the Peninsula Theatre in Woy Woy on Friday night May 16 for a three weekend season. The story opens in a seedy section of New Orleans as faded Southern belle Blanche DuBois comes to visit her sister Stella. The steamy, urban ambiance of Stella's home is a shock to Blanche's nerves. Stella, who fears the reaction of her husband Stanley, welcomes Blanche with some trepidation. As Blanche explains that their ancestral Southern plantation in Mississippi has been "lost" due to the "epic fornications" of their ancestors, her veneer of self-possession begins to slip drastically. Stanley suspects Blanche of holding out on his wife’s inheritance money, while his wife’s concern for her sister's well-being emboldens Blanche to hold court in the Kowalski apartment, infuriating Stanley and leading to conflict between him and Stella, who is pregnant. On the fringes of sanity, Blanche soon discovers that she cannot outrun her past and the stage is set for her final, brutal confrontation with her brother-in-law. The much coveted role of Stanley Kowalski is played by Central Coast newcomer Xavier Ryan who brings 20 years acting experience from Melbourne. Stella is played by another WWLT newcomer Kellie Martin while her sister Blanche is played by award winning actor Christine Vale. Others in the cast include Graham Vale, Keith Conway, Jessica Alex, Robert Cottam and Sierra Phillips. Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire, one of the most acclaimed plays of all time,

was first staged in 1948 playing two years on Broadway and is continuously revived by professional theatre companies. Woy Woy Little Theatre will present the play at the Peninsula Theatre in Woy Woy. Good Health & Wellbeing

A good Detox will make your engine purr.... Just like your car runs better after a tuneup, our bodies function better when they’re purged of the built-up waste products and toxins that compromise health. A truly effective detox must go beyond fasting or juicing by supplying the specific ingredients needed to boost the body’s own detoxification system. The toxins and chemicals of modern industrial life assault our bodies every day. Our systems are constantly neutralizing and eliminating them, but the problem is, over time, this exposure overwhelms the detox organs, (primarily the liver and the gut). So, instead of getting eliminated, toxins wind up being stored in various tissues, bodily functions start to slow then falter, setting the stage for the development of chronic diseases. A periodic detox will keep your engine humming and help you to maintain good health in the long-term. A detox has wonderful side effects. Although the primary goal of a good detox is to reset and optimize detox function, the side effects are wonderful too – most people will experience: Weight loss, a boost in energy levels, less bloating and puffiness, clearer

Valentina explains

“What the …. are the Akashic Records?” The Akashic Records are a dimension of consciousness that contain a vibrational record of every soul and its journey. The feel of this energetic field is extremely refined, crystal clear, sparkling clean and imbued with unconditional love, personal safety and genuine goodwill. When I teach people how to enter the Akahsic Library they often burst into tears from the sheer intensity of love and connection to their Soul truth … very beautiful and a little bit scary the first time. The word “Akasha,” is a Sanskrit word meaning “primary substance” –‘ that out of which all things are formed’ and from the perspective of the records all souls are eternal and the Akasha energy itself, although interpreted in different ways by different cultures, religions and organized belief systems, is generally recognised as love, light, peace, power, beauty, harmony, joy, strength, order and balance.

The Mystic Earth Shop has been founded by Carlos De Sousa whose mission is to create a place that caters for all kinds of needs and interests. The Mystic Earth Shop features key therapists who are well known in their field of practice. Carlos aims to provide a location where people can find wellness, health, therapy, beauty, and above all a mystical experience.

Crystals, Gift Ware, Jewellery, Books, Cds, Herbs, Teas, Incense, Oils

The Records are known in every spiritual tradition. For example, in the Judeo-Christian tradition as both “The Book of Life” and “The Book of God’s Remembrance.” On a simplistic level, it is like a library in the sky maintained and protected by light beings. In fact this is how I first discovered the Akasha, by dreaming as a young child of being escorted into a library and pulling out scrolls to read and having conversations with ‘tall men in robes’ in great details about various events, planetary, familial and personal.

Seasonal Advice from Penrose Garden and Aquarium The cooler conditions means you can take on larger tasks, such as laying a new path or digging a pond. There's always work to be done in the garden, and it doesn't have to be strenuous exercise. Rake the leaves and pick up twigs, sticks and bark. Autumn winds have left their mark and debris has built up. Fallen leaves and bark, along with twigs and sticks, accumulate on lawns and paths over winter. You can gather leaves, bark and small twigs for mulch or to add to the compost heap. Sticks can be collected for use as fuel for indoor winter fires, for a family barbecue or as plant supports. Aerate the lawn Many lawns are compacted and weedy after the long drought. Aerating now lets moisture into the soil so you can begin to rejuvenate the lawn in spring. • Use a garden fork or hire a powered aerator. • Top dress with a fine layer of coarse sand or loam. • Fertilise in spring. • If rain is puddling and not soaking in, even after aeration, apply a hose-on soil wetting agent. Dig the vegie garden & plant new crops Provided your soil isn’t sodden, winter can be a great time to dig a new vegie or garden bed or to turn in green manure crops to get the garden ready for planting in spring. It’s also a good time to pull or hoe out weeds and cut back invasive plants. There’s still plenty of time to grow some tasty fresh vegetables in your garden. Plant snow peas, English spinach, rhubarb, potatoes. 60

Violets and Helebores make a lovely Autumn/Winter showing. Pruning your shrubs and roses While plants are bare you can more easily remove dead or crowded growth or spot invasive climbers and remove them. Don’t prune late winter or spring-flowering shrubs but do get stuck into roses and grapevines. Potplants Plant up a couple of pots with annuals. Choose pansies or polyanthus that are already in flower for an instant show. Water well after planting and keep in bloom by deadheading and watering every 10 days with a liquid plant food.
