Born to run? Get out and about on the Coast! November’s a month where the feet pound the pavement (and mud, and bush!) on the Central Coast... so get your running shoes on and get moving! This month the region is home to three great events to test your stamina – on the weekend of November 9 & 10 the Great North Walk 100’s, organised by the Terrigal Trotters running club, offers 100 kilometre and 100 mile races along the Great North Walk from Teralba in Lake Macquarie through to Yarramalong in the lush Central Coast hinterland (100km) or Patonga on the Hawkesbury River (100mi). Two weeks later on November 24, the Central Coast Half Marathon & 10km Fun Run sees the southern shores of Tuggerah Lake come alive with pounding feet on the coastal track between Chittaway Bay and The Entrance. The Stampede is Australia’s leading obstacle course event series and as part of its national tour, it returns to Glenworth Valley for another year! Held over two days on November 16 & 17, this epic adventure race is a challenge that will push you to your limits, with a gruelling 5km or 10km course taking in thick mud and plenty of obstacles - it’s one crazy day! With summer approaching it’s also a great time to go exploring in our State Forests. Strickland State Forest, located at Narara, and Olney State Forest,

bordering the Watagan Mountains to the north, are popular recreation areas with plenty of hiking, camping and picnic opportunities. Check in with our Central Coast Visitor Information Centre at Kariong and mention the “Getaway Plan deal” to claim a free Frisbee! Details and more great offers can be found at www.getawayplan.com.au. The Brisbane Water Oyster Festival on November 10 continues to support the region’s primary industry of Oyster Farming. Held at Ettalong Beach, you can also enjoy fine wine from local and regional producers, live entertainment, interactive fun for adults and kids... and plenty of gourmet food! Toward the end of the month, attention turns to Christmas! Several market events including the Handmade Craft Market, Davistown Charity Markets and Avoca Beachside Markets present the perfect opportunity to pick up an early Christmas gift. The beginning to the festive season is marked on the last weekend of November with the Gosford City Christmas Parade (Saturday 30 Nov) and Lighting of the Christmas Tree in Toukley (Sunday 1 Dec).

Good Health & Wellbeing The Aloha Gallery | Centre for healing and well-being in Holgate In the Hawaiian language, ALOHA stands for much more than just “hello” or “goodbye” or “love.” Its deeper meaning is “the joyful (oha) sharing (alo) of life energy (ha) in the present (alo).” As you share this energy you become attuned to the Universal Power that the Hawaiians call mana. And the loving use of this incredible Power is the secret for attaining true health, happiness, prosperity and success. We invite you to retreat to an oasis of calm in Holgate.

Valentina explains … “What the …. Is Reiki?” Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation involving the channelling of unconditional love through the practitioner’s hands into the client’s energetic and physical bodies; thus promoting healing. It’s literal meaning in Japanese is: “Rei” meaning “God’s Wisdom or the Higher Power” and “Ki” meaning “life force energy” … and there you have it - “spiritually guided life force energy.” Simple and divine at the same time! I would like you to know that besides being deeply relaxing, non-invasive and beneficial both to specific areas of pain and the overall well-being of the client; Reiki also works effectively and harmoniously in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques; assisting in the relief of side effects and promoting recovery. There is nothing required from the client except to lie down and receive the bliss! Is this weird and wonderful technique only practiced by a select few gifted healers? No! not at all –a relatively easy technique to learn, the ability to use Reiki is not taught in the usual sense, but is transferred to the student during a Reiki class. This ability is passed on during an “attunement” given by a Reiki master and allows the student to tap into an unlimited supply of “life force energy” to improve one’s health and enhance the quality of life. As an enjoyable taster, I also offer complimentary Reiki Healing Attunements as part of my adults meditation groups on Tuesdays and Sundays (see timetable), assisting you to spontaneously and harmoniously continue releasing pain and stale patterns until the next class. I do this because the more space you make in your energetic body by releasing old stuff the more room there is to bring in all the fabulous, warm, yummy new stuff you want, need and deserve in your life … whatever that is for you. I myself am an Usui/Tibetan Reiki Master and my lineage is with the Karuna Reiki as taught by William Lee Rand at the International Center for Reiki Training on the island of Maui in Hawaii so if you choose to commence your Reiki journey with me, this is where you it will ultimately lead you – lineage is extremely important in Reiki as it imparts both power and integrity to your ability as a practitioner (even if you are only ‘practicing’ on yourself ). If you have any questions or are interested in learning Reiki please email me at valentinaearthealer@gmail.com

Spring is a fantastic time to get the whole family involved in some productive outdoor fun. Children love to dig in the soil and with just a little assistance can develop a lifelong interest in gardening. Choose something easy to start off with such as Strawberries or Sunflowers. Both will grow easily in a nice sunny spot in the garden, or can be planted in pots if space is limited. Herbs are another great first choice and many types can be purchased in small pots or grown from seed. With a little creativity these can be grown in a wide range of recycled containers..an old bath, laundry tub or wheel barrow. Spring is Tomato time, so grow the old favourite cherry variety “Sweet Bite. Its quick to grow, disease free and the fruit can be eaten off the vine with the warmth of the sun still in them. Like all

tomatoes keep them well fed with a liquid food and plant them in the sun Garden art is another way of getting littlies involved. Some colourful paint can turn an old gate into a garden feature, dress up some old pots, or brighten up a fence. Keep up the colour with flowers in amongst the veggies, Lavender attracts pollinating insects and Nasturtiums and Marigolds keep off the bugs. A small frog pond is an easy weekend project. Use a small pre formed pool, square of pond liner, or the old sand pit. Plant with a couple of native reeds and pop in a couple of Native fish to keep out the mozzies. The kids will enjoy watching and waiting for the first tadpoles to appear over summer. Whichever project you choose, Spring is natures planting time so give it a go now!

“Everything old is new again” Furniture of yesteryear was constructed of beautiful timbers and built by highly crafted tradespeople. Polished by French polishers and made to wear the test of time. Today we live in a throwaway society, not only do we throw away these beautiful pieces of quality, but we buy, and then in a short time, throw away what I call fashion accessory pieces, made in China and made for a fashion which is not meant to last.

These are inexpensive, look the part, but definitely have a time limit. So what do we do with our treasures of yesteryear? We reinvent them, appreciate their longevity and understand where they can fit into today’s designs. It is amazing what a coat of paint can do for the look of an item, it can transform a tired old piece into a new “work of art” with a little imagination new handles, some

slight adjustments and then..... “ Everything old is new again”. Please see the images below of our before and after shots of four different pieces of furniture with explanations that can be attached as below.

After

After Before

Before

This is an intricately carved timber side table which we have gilded with silver leaf, distressed and given a white wash finish to tone it down.

The pictures above are of an vintage occasional table which had been very poorly lacquered, so we sanded it all back, painted the base white and to keep the beautiful detail of the top we created a lime wash finish.

Before Before Before

After

An early 18th century hand carved French mirror, made of fruit tree wood, had been painted grey so we tried to strip all of the paint off to take it back to its original beauty. This was not possible, so the only thing that we could do for it was to make it more beautiful than ever before by gilding it in a 23 carat gold leaf. Then we antiqued it and sealed it for protection.

After This is an antique timber box that we added mouldings to, and finished it in one of our real liquid metal coatings (aluminium) Great for use on furniture that could be put out in an outside area and not be affected by the weather, as it leaves a coating of metal on the substrate.

Renovating or Updating?

I have been specializing in painted finishes on kitchens and furniture on the Central Coast for 20 years. There are many advantages to paint finishes, whether you are revamping something old or creating something new. Not only are the advantages of paint an aesthetic appeal, in today’s living there is also the environmental issue. A lot of synthetic coatings are being used today which omit toxic fumes for the lifespan of the product. Once paint has cured, it omits no harmful vapours and can also lock in vapours from the underlying substrate, making it environmentally friendly. Whether it is new or updating your home. You can get as creative as you like. Using paint and the beauty of it is that you can always paint over it at a later date as fashions or trends change. An easy way to change your furniture, whether updating or moving house, is to have your existing furniture repainted professionally, to create a whole new look and feel. Phone us to find out all of your options. You will be amazed.

Truly unique, rare and beautiful Australian furniture and giftware handcrafted with love With Christmas approaching fast, you may be thinking about that ‘One off Piece’ Dining Table that will be a real talking point at your Christmas dinner, or that gift that will make your friend or family proud to own,… and not end up in the next garage sale. We have a great selection of furniture and gifts to die for, handcrafted right here on the mountain, starting at around $20:00, as well as beautiful art by our local photographer. Having been here for almost two decades, the Rod Murray Gallery has earned a reputation for fine craftsmanship, consistently delivering magnificent and timeless pieces of furniture to customers who keep coming back, and recommending us to their relatives and friends. We are very grateful to your continued support! We’ve also been ‘that stopping point’ for that special gift, for a lot of regulars on their way to a wedding, birthday, etc. Using aged, reclaimed Australian Hardwoods and sustainable timbers, we ‘keep the trees alive’ by turning them into beautiful pieces of furniture, each individually handcrafted with old fashioned integrity. No two pieces are the same. I could rave on, but why not pop in and see for yourself?

Quality hand crafted & custom built locally

So, where are we? I can’t believe the number of people who still, even as recently as last weekend, say to me ‘I’ve been going past here for years and never knew you were here’ ..best kept secret?! Only 20 min from Gosford, 30 min from the North of Sydney, an hour from Newcastle, the Rod Murray Gallery is located at the iconic Old Oak Milk Bar site at the Peats Ridge Village, PEATS RIDGE. It’s a beautiful scenic drive to the quaint village, with the local café, as well as the award winning restaurant across the road. When you came to the ‘Barn’ type building, let yourself be surprised by our stunning pieces of furniture and giftware and art. Indulge in the old fashioned friendly customer service. At the Rod Murray Gallery you’ll never feel like you’re imposing, whether you come to buy or just say Hi! "Look forward to seeing you soon" Odette, 0439 731 771

Wollombi is located north-east of Sydney, just 90 minutes from Sydney’s northern suburbs. A significant meeting point on the northsouth trade and travel route for coastal Aboriginal peoples, the Wollombi Valley was inhabited for thousands of years by Aborigines. Wollombi later played a key role in the expansion of the Sydney colony in the 1820s. The Great North Road, an extraordinary engineering feat built by convict labour, branching at Wollombi as it extended from Sydney to the north and north-east. Today, the tranquillity of the valley hides a vibrant lift with strong artistic and social activities. Continue along George Downes Drive after visiting Kulnura and enjoy the beautiful scenic drive to Wollombi.

Honey, have you been Sugared yet? Phâro Sugaring Gel is made from only NATURAL INGREDIENTS, beautiful fragrance and the therapeutic benefits of Manuka Honey, Kiwifruit and Lemon. A real spa experience. Less discomfort, Less redness, Less Ouch! Sugar wax adheres to hair not the skin, traditional resin based wax products often adhere to the skin resulting in lifting live skin cell layers when removed. Sugaring reduces broken and ingrown hairs. One of the most common problems with waxing is early regrowth due to broken hairs. Waxing can leave 15-30% breakage behind. Since wax hardens on the hair, it has the tendency to break the hair off at the surface, rather than pull it out. Phâro Sugaring Gel wraps around the hair shaft making it pliable, while seeping below the mouth of the follicle and lubricating the hair to make the hair removal experience more complete and gentle. At KarmaSpa we only use Pharo Sugar, and best of all we don’t charge any more for this! We have 3 full time, CIDESCO qualified beauty therapists with over 30 years combined experience in this industry. We pride ourselves on providing our clients with excellent service and outstanding value for money.

Verre Eglomise

Verre Eglomise is the term for reverse gilding and painting on glass. With most artwork the artist works from the background first and the highlights are last to be done. With reverse decorative glass painting the

highlights are done first and working to the background, which leaves no room for error. It is a decorative glass painting technique that dates back over 2000 years, I have created my own style of Verre Eglomise, creating the designs to today’s modern living styles. With the use of many types of leaf with varying colours and incorporating products such as mica powders and paints. Each piece is commissioned with colour requirements being the priority, being

totally unique. It has huge and exciting possibilities for interior design and architectural features. Deborah Buckley Artisan Showroom: 1629A Yarramalong Rd, Yarramalong. Ph: 4356 1958 Factory: Unit 1/ 111 Gavenlock Rd, Tuggerah NSW 2259. Ph: 4353 4954

Marine Rescue Central Coast

On the Water

Good Seamanship Good seamen know and manage their boats. They learn about their local waterway to ensure safe navigation; they can handle their boat properly in varying sea and wind conditions; they know the most common knots used for good boating; they can set and retrieve their anchor without fuss; they maintain the boat’s engine and electrics to avoid operational problems; they make sure all family and friends on board are aware of the boat’s safety equipment and where it is stowed; and they know the appropriate emergency contacts and responses.

Do you know everything about your boat? Are you familiar with its construction, layout, carrying capacity, limitations, and capabilities? Can you find equipment on board readily? Do you know where all items are stowed? What do you know about your boat’s propulsion and electrics? Can you deal with common problems? Knowing the characteristics and limitations of your boat is important for safe boating. You can find this information in the boat’s operating manual. If possible, find out the boat’s wind and sea limitations. If the operating manual doesn’t state it specifically, contact the manufacturer to find out the maximum sea conditions for your boat.

If you are not sure and need some help with navigation, knots and splices or boat handling consider a Seamanship Course with Marine Rescue Central Coast. Call 4325 7929 for more details or visit the Unit’s web site at www.vmrcc.org.au Photo: Education and Training Room at Marine Rescue Central Coast Unit’s Point Clare Base

Seacoast Fishing SPRING AND SUMMER

Our commercial fishing business has been operating from Kincumber for the past 9 years and we have the freshest fish in town, straight from the boat to our shop, which is located 400m from the scenic road roundabout towards Macmasters Beach. Our catch consists of Snapper, Ocean Jackets, Bream, Trevally, mullet (when in season ) and Lobsters. We also have local Oysters, school prawns and a variety of frozen products. As our weather warms up, our catches continue to increase and our lobsters start to move heading out to sea for food. Our boys know when and where to put their traps out. During the winter months when the mullet are running we keep the male mullet for lobster bait. They split and salt the mullet and hang out to dry for a few weeks, the lobsters love this feed, it also lasts longer in the traps. About mid November is when our lobsters are available. We have tanks on our premises, where we store them for up to a month ready for transport. If you need lobsters, just pick them from our tanks and we can pack them for you, we cook everyday, so your choices are cooked, live, or asleep! We are open Thurs, Fridays 11am to 6pm and saturday 9am to 6pm. Ph: 43686160 Patanga Street, Kincumber

Seachange - a dream come true When South African Gary Berman moved to the Central Coast from Sydney he had no idea his long forgotten hobby would end up shaping a dramatic career change. Gary had worked in the hospitality industry in the USA, South Africa and the UK for over 20 years culminating in the role of General Manager in various hotels across Australia, but it wasn’t until his daughter was born that he realised the continual travel wouldn’t suit the family lifestyle he envisioned. As his wife had grown up on the Central Coast, he was no stranger to the beauty of the area and when it came time to move, it was he said “an easy decision”.

After successfully developing a hotel accommodation website, which he in turn sold to a larger company, Gary started dabbling in a hobby he had always enjoyed – photography. Soon he was up at dawn capturing images of the local beaches he would mount on canvas and hang in the house. It wasn’t until an associate offered to buy one that he believed others may also want to purchase them. After testing the waters at many local markets, he decided to turn his passion into a lifestyle and opened his gallery at Avoca Beach, almost a year ago. “I have always believed you must love the work you do and getting to live and

work on the Central Coast is a dream come true. Not only do I enjoy my job, but I love to create something that will bring others enjoyment for years to come.” Together with Gary’s Central Coast landscape photography, he also specialises in unique family portraits capturing natural, relaxed images in beautiful outdoor locations. Recently Gary’s entrepreneurial spirit has been further extended with the launch of the Central Coast’s own street wear clothing brand “drøm”. Meaning “to dream”, drøm is designed by Gary based around his images of the local area, but are not your typical tourist shirts, Gary says. I want to grow this brand, which currently comes in a range of singlets, t-shirts, hoodies, caps and more, to become something that will expand across the country, and represent this great area we live in. We are proud to say that drøm is conceived, designed and printed locally. This concert will feature the young talented soprano, Tiana Dimech, as a soloist for the very first time and you will be delighted by her angelic voice. Of course the audience will be asked to participate in the singing of carols and share the Christmas spirit with one another as the year draws to a close. Woy Woy Little Theatre Woy Woy Little Theatre has announced their 2014 Subscription Season of four plays. The season includes the successful West End comedy, “Straight and Narrow” which centres around partners Bob and Jeff and a personal crisis in Jeff’s life and the classic Tennessee Williams’ Pulitzer Prize winning “A Streetcar Named Desire” to be staged in the first half of 2014. The third play is “Insignificance”, written by Terry Johnson who strips back the veneer of four cultural icons to reveal the human beings behind the legends - Albert Einstein, Joe DiMaggio, Joe McCarthy & Marilyn Monroe. The scenarios are funny and engaging, while the dialogue is fast, historically accurate and razor sharp. Insignificance will be presented at the Peninsula Theatre in August, followed by Neil Simon’s classic comedy, “The Odd Couple”. The Odd Couple won four Tony awards when first staged on Broadway and is widely regarded as Simon’s best play. Directors for the four plays are Denise Main, John Hickey, Gavin Critchley and Shea Wicks. Woy Woy Little Theatre 2014 subscription forms are currently available from the Peninsula Theatre and local libraries. For more information contact David Wicks, Marketing Manager Woy Woy Little Theatre Ph: 4344 4737

Woy Woy Little Theatre presents Competitive Tenderness Competitive Tenderness, a wonderfully funny Australian comedy penned by the brilliant Hannie Rayson, is directed by Christine Vale who won high praise for her interpretation of the fastmoving farce The Thirty-Nine Steps staged twelve months ago. Dawn Snow (Annie Bilton) is a tenacious woman, whether running a highly successful chain of weight loss clinics, or the simple act of reforming the Ugandan Prison System. Brian, The Mayor of Greater Burke (Paul Russell), is far less tenacious. In fact he’s the opposite of tenacious. He’s a mayor. Kel (Bob Farmer), Trevor (John Lusty) and Piggy (Richard Holz) are just your average Aussie blokes. Except one is Greek. Spot him if you can. Delia (Jen Mealing) and Amelia (Charlotte Otton) are two well meaning Secretaries. Enough said. Dragi Smilevski (Graham Vale) is a megalomaniac smallgoods magnate who, when he’s not concocting delicious (if a little off putting) sausage recipes, dreams of taking over the world-one cured pork loin at a time. So then, Dawn is the CEO of Greater Burke Municipality. Brian is the Mayor of Greater Burke. Brian is infatuated with Dawn. Dawn not so with Brian. Kel is in Traffic and Local Laws, Trevor is in Dog Catching and Pig is fat and has bad skin. They are all a part of Dawn’s plan to overhaul the local Municipal Council of Greater Burke (to say nothing of Kenny the Dog!). Woy Woy Little Theatre presents Hannie Rayson’s Competitive Tenderness only at the Peninsula Theatre Woy Woy from October 25, 2013 – 10 performances only.
