Sizzling summer fun this January Summer fun is never too far away on the Central Coast in January – from kids activities to big sporting events, exciting new events, live entertainment and of course trueblue Australia Day celebrations! Our local racecourses have plenty of great horse racing meets scheduled throughout the month – Gosford’s Gold Cup event is staged on Thursday 10 January, while Wyong Race Club’s Australia Day meet marks the club’s 100th anniversary. The Central Coast Mariners are flying high in the national A-League football competition, and they host two games in January, facing local rivals Newcastle on January 19 as well as Adelaide on January 25.
Kids will love the Central Coast for their summer school holiday fun – from January 1 til 5 SUFM free kids activities start up in Memorial Park at The Entrance, while later in the month, Dip, Dip, Dip Days at Kariong’s Mt Penang Gardens are a fun, educational experience for primary school aged children. Starting on January 15, Gosford Musical Society Juniors are staging a production of “My Son Pinocchio” which is sure to be a hit with the young ones at Laycock Street Theatre! On January 20, the Weetbix Kids TRYathlon comes back for its second year to Woy Woy, where kids can get active and have fun with a range of different sports! Keep an eye out for X-Up – Australia’s Freeride Festival which brings three days of BMX and slopestyle mayhem to Warnervale between January 18 and 20, and then before the holidays wrap up, it’s time to celebrate the Australia Day weekend!
There’s also some great entertainment at a range of venues on Australia Day, including an Oz Rock tribute show at Mingara, 6 Strings Degustation Night at Lizottes Central Coast, “Spank” Massive Party by the Water at The Beachcomber and of course the Race Day at Wyong Racecourse! In the days in-between, why not tick some of our 52 Local Secrets off your list? The full 52 can be viewed on our website – from scenic spots to markets, fish and chip spots to culture, and everything in between! There’s also some exciting new places to visit – browse new chocolate boutique at Wyong, with Luka Handcrafted Chocolates recently opened to the public at the Old Milk Factory. A new craft beer enterprise, Six String Brewing Company, is also new to the Coast and can be found at Erina! Check out our website for all the details on these sizzling summer events and activities… and so much more!
Festivities begin on Friday 25 January with Canton Beach’s annual waterfront event, while Mingara will host Shannon Noll in The Show Room that evening. Saturday sees grand Australia Day

celebrations across the region, with The Entrance providing live entertainment all day and into the evening, finishing with Fireworks , while Gosford City’s celebrations are spread across Wagstaffe for breakfast, Gosford waterfront at lunch, then culminate in the evening at Woy Woy, with the spectacular fireworks display at 9:15pm.

Marine Rescue Terrigal Haven We are a relatively small base of volunteers and therefore don't have the multitude of members, needed for actively canvassing for donations or selling raffle tickets, that the larger bases have. We spend most of our man/woman hours, manning the base, training, assisting people in need and for boat and base maintenance. Our members are from all walks of life. Rather than being an old men's club, as has often been the case in organizations of this kind in the past, we are a base with a broadly spread age range, with a weighting in the median age group. One of the advantages of our being a small base, is that we get to do hands on work all the time, which is great for "learning the ropes" so to speak, if you don't come from a maritime background. So, you definitely don't need a boating background to become a member of Marine Rescue, as there is a whole diversity of tasks to be learned on the job, both on board our rescue Boat the "Mary George" and at the base. Once you become a member, you are entitled to gratis courses such as radio, first aid, boat license and many more, that provide the individual with skills necessary for giving the community of the Central Coast significant help in regard to safety of life in a marine environment. So, should you be interested in getting an insight in what we do, we are always open on Sundays and on call out at other times.

Come and try our locally caught seafood. On Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays our boys Peter Mark and Blane, bring in their daily catch for Sue and staff to sell direct to the public. Snapper’ ocean jackets’ bream and trevally are plentiful, we also sell fresh local oysters and buy in Tasmanian and NZ salmon, ocean trout, and fresh crystal bay prawns or fresh tigers or kings (what ever is the best this week). Peter has been fishing for about 30 years and has plenty of experience, knowing where to place his traps, Mark is our youngest partner and is very knowledgeable also and Blane is our excellent deckey. Seacoast fishing moors their 16 mtr boat Spinnaway 11, from Pretty Beach wharf, where the boys can travel as far as 50 miles and find new territory, especially looking for Lobsters (season starts in November). Australian Reptile Park Visit the Australian Reptile Park these holidays and you’re in for a monster of a good time! We have so many monsters, we’ve created Monster Month and the fun starts on December 27th.
We have monsters in our alligator lagoon too, with over 30 breeding males and females. The exciting annual nest raiding will be on again in early January; keep an eye on the website where we’ll announce the date. For more details and school holiday show time visit www.reptilepark.com.au
Andersons
The star of Monster Month is Elvis, who at 5 metres long and over 500 kilos is the monster of all monsters! He’s Australia’s crankiest croc but we love him all the same. Elvis is fed at 1.30pm every day of the school holidays and one lucky person each day will be chosen to feed him. That’s right! One lucky visitor per day will actually have the spine tingling experience of entering his enclosure and feeding him, supervised by our experienced keepers of course! You just need to be in the crowd at 1.30pm for your chance to feed the monster.
Andersons offers a variety of boats for hire, half cabin, open boats, aluminium boats with canopy and the BBQ boats. Bring the family or friends along for a great day out, you don’t need a boat licence all the boats are very easy to operate, hire fee includes the boat, fuel, map and full instructions. We also offer unique BBQ boats which can carry up to 12 people, these are the best way to get out on the water with your group. They include electric start motors with steering wheel, along with toilet facilities, BBQ and stereo system. Great for Birthday parties or any type of group function. Hires are available from a couple of hours through to the full day every day all year round, just bring your food to cook, cutlery, drinks and we can look after the rest. Fishing gear available at the boatshed shop along with bait, tackle, ice, hire rods, fishing licence, coffee, cold drinks and snacks. The boats are pet friendly, wheelchair access is good.
We’re home to many wonderful and colourful monsters: Hugo is our giant Galapagos tortoise and his daily walks through the Park are very popular with adults and kids alike.

Three Reasons to try a Segway Central Coast based tourist operator - Segway Central Coast (www.segwaycentralcoast.com.au) is all about offering their visitors an experience they’ll never forget! With summer on the way now’s the time to get outside and have some fun and here’s Segway Central Coast’s top three reasons to do just that! 1. It’s the family outing EVERYONE will want to go on! Little Creek Cheese is the only cheese factory on the Central Coast of New South Wales. Located at the historical Old Milk Factory, in the back of Wyong. Being established now for just over 20 months they are opening their doors to the public and teaching cheese making. Owners and cheese makers Russell and Sue Parsons are excited about passing on their knowledge to anyone who would like to learn the traditional cheese making ways. Using everyday things that you would find in your kitchen they will show you how to make Haloumi, Ricotta, Yoghurt and Labna. Having started this as a family hobby, they hope that other families will be interested in taking up cheese making as a family hobby as well. What better reward for a day’s work than some delicious cheese.
Just near Wyong Railway Station you’ll find Alberts Café & Takeaway. The Coffee at Alberts is excellent and we enjoy it often. We also love their toasted ham, cheese and tomato sandwiches, these are delicious but our very favourite is THE BIG BREAKFAST, especially when you can sit outside with your furry friend by your side. Alberts big breakfast is on the Menu all day every-day and is probably the best value on the Coast for $12.95 you get eggs, bacon, sausage, mushrooms, tomatoes, toast and a glass of orange juice... Simple food lovingly prepared and served with a smile, that’s Alberts. We look forward to meeting you soon!
Sue said “We always have people asking us how we make cheese, so the next step was to open the doors and teach people how to make it, with a hands on lesson, rather than just a verbal answer” The response has been great and anyone interested in attending a class can contact Little Creek Cheese direct for more details and dates on classes. Deborah Buckley Artisan ‘Happy New Year to all’, Now that Santa has been, and we’ve all feasted too much, time to get on the move and try to take some of the extra kilo’s off before they settle. As many of us have some time off, this time of the year, and are making new year resolutions, making a goal to do some of the things we want to do around the house this year is a great idea. For inspiration in our kitchens and bathrooms come visit me at either our factory or my beautiful showroom at Yarramalong. One product we are suppliers of, is pressed tin Panels, which are a very inexpensive and versatile way of adding interest to bathrooms or kitchens. This can be painted with any of our finishes and can complement either modern , contemporary, or provincial designs. Also for something very unique a technique of ancient art, I do reverse glass painting which is an art on the back of the glass working in reverse to the way that you would on canvas. Using some really beautiful products including gold and silver leaf. Something you would not have seen before, ‘ come check it out ’.

www.centralcoastimag.com.au supported us; many of whom have become very good friends. Christmas stocks came in early this year and have brought forth a steady stream of compliments. Our extended range of hand-made glass is stunning. Besides vases and bowls the glass masters have ventured into sculptural pieces this year. They are quite lyrical and reasonably priced. We have an entirely new range of plates, platters and candle holders in unusual colours and have already had to send for more stock. The whimsical metal range for ’nuts and bolts’ sports figures have been augmented with a number of motor bikes. So clever and so attractive, there‘s nothing quite like a Harley! So do drop in to Toowoon Bay Gallery and see the vast and varied items we are showing this year. The Carousel
This historic icon has charmed and delighted young and old at The Entrance since 1930. It has seen a number of owners since its arrival in Australia from France in the early 1900s and is now Sunday 6th part of the National Trust classified Jimpin Jivin Sundays Haas Family carnival, a family that with DJ Vinnie has 400 years of carnival ancestry. Sails Stage 11am-3pm The carousel, which was built in the late 1800s in Germany, was Saturday 12th originally ‘powered’ by a pony but was Kerrie Garside converted to steam at the turn of the Sails Stage century. It remained steam driven until 11am-3pm the 1950s when an old chev. engine Sunday 13th was installed, and was converted to Keystring electricity in the 1970s. Its reed pipe Sails Stage organ, operated by bellows, remained 11am-3pm in commission until 1950. Music is Friday 18th now supplied by tape, although the PCYC Summer of Fun organ front has been restored. Memorial Park The carousel has pride of place on 11am-3pm The Entrance waterfront where it is visited by not only today’s children, Saturday 19th but by the parents, grandparents and Farmers Market great-grandparents of those children. Kay Haerland Foyer Gallery: 1 December to 9 January 2013 An exhibition of quilts by Central Coast textile artist Kay Haerland. Kay is internationally renowned for her beautiful and intricate work, using fabric and thread, rather than canvas and paint. Her work consists of realistic landscapes and contemporary abstract compositions. Like a painter, she uses design, colour, texture and light to make her work ‘believable’ and inspire the viewer to connect emotionally with the work.

Peat Island Project Gallery Two: 1 December 2012 to 27 January 2013 The Peat Island Project was initiated by a group of artists contemplating the cultural significance of Peat Island, north of Sydney. The island gradually transitioned from a location visited by the local indigenous community to the site of a psychiatric hospital. Its future is currently the subject of community debate. Following a site
visit, organised with the permission of the State Property Authority, artists including Ana Pollack, David Collins, Peter Zanetti, Matt Glendenning, Mel Anderson and poet Bhupen Thakker set about unravelling the stories of the island’s fixtures, attributes and people in order to document and reflect upon its history, present and future.
How Yesterday Remembers Tomorrow Gallery One: 1 December to 27 January 2013 This exhibition features work by six contemporary Australian artists and artist partnerships who are past recipients of the Helen Lempriere Travelling Art Scholarship for emerging artists. Presenting early works alongside more recent projects, the exhibition offers a unique insight into the conceptual and artistic development of early career artists, highlighting how artists’ practices develop over time through sustained research, experimentation and refinement. The exhibition encourages us to rediscover the past in order to look to the future. Featuring work by Lauren Brincat, Sean Cordeiro & Claire Healy, Todd McMillan, Ms&Mr, Tony Schwensen and Sam Smith, and ranging across photography, drawing, digital video and installation, the exhibition provides stimulating commentary on an array of current social and political issues, shedding light on the concerns of young artists today. How Yesterday Remembers Tomorrow is supported by the NSW Government through Arts NSW as a result of the Visual Arts and Craft Strategy. An Artspace exhibition toured by Museums & Galleries NSW.

The Italian Restaurant Azzuro Blu Wharf, The Entrance. "What a lovely evening out. Although it was raining we were able to park within a few metres of Azzuro Blu Wharf, The Entrance where The Italian Restaurant, right on the Waterfront is situated. We were so well served, cold water on the table, a comprehensive wine list, friendly service along with authentic Italian food - it doesn't get much better than that. Oysters, sweet fresh Sydney Rock Oysters were shared by 3 guests at our table. They were succulent Mornay, Kilpatrick and Natural, whilst I enjoyed a Chicken Caesar Salad as an entree. Our main dishes were delightful. 2 of our party of 4 had the Scampi Alla Grillia dressed with lemon juice and garlic with rocket salad and shaved parmesan and cherry tomatoes. They thoroughly enjoyed the scampi, our other guest had the Enzo Prawns sauteed with garlic and chili in Napolitana sauce. While I admired the presentation and taste of their meals my favourite was definitely my own. Home made light, fluffy gnocci with a delicate cream sauce accompanied by Sauteed King Prawns and fresh Asparagus - it doesn't get much better than that. The menu is more exciting than standard Italian restaurants, a great way to relax and enjoy." Carolyn Sinclair, Retired Chef, Old Courthouse Restaurant, Minmi.

After parking your vehicle, you will have a short stroll through the Arboretum to the opera venue. NOTE: Be mindful of the convenience of Pearl Beach residents when parking in street-side areas. Please do not park in or across an obvious resident's property vehicle access point. Consider how you would feel if someone parks across your driveway! What to bring! This is an open air event amidst the beauty of the native forest. You should bring chairs, a picnic hamper and drinks and clothing applicable for the
weather. Remember, in the village there is only the Pearl Beach General Store and Café and this is located some distance from the venue. So selfcatering is recommended. Excellent coffee can be purchased onsite. To those bringing young children, we ask that they be supervised and noise be kept to a minimum during performances. Medical assistance will be available onsite if required. A very exciting line-up of opera artists will perform an outdoor concert on Saturday, 23rd March, 2013 - Ben Makisi - Tenor, Dominica Matthews - Mezzo Soprano, Michaele Archer Soprano and Dallas Watts - Baritone. Accompanied by Jem Harding - Pianist and the Central Coast Conservatorium String Orchestra. Proceeds of this event to support Guide Dogs NSW & ACT and ROTARY Projects and Charities. For ticket information visit www.opera.pearl-beach.com Bookings essential.
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang HAS LANDED IN SYDNEY AND RECEIVED FABULOUS REVIEWS "9/10...bursting with colour, optimism and humour, and it boasts some of the finest stage talents in town... the car is the star and it doesn’t disappoint. Its flying sequences are a marvel of stage magic." Sun Herald "David Hobson and Rachael Beck, as the inventor Caractacus Potts and feisty maiden Truly Scrumptious, are the heart and soul of the musical. Both sing beautifully while the craziness of Ian Fleming’s story unfolds around them. Huge fun" Sun Herald “Chitty Chitty really goes off with a Bang Bang...a fantasmagorical machine that draws gasps of delight when it flies, in a genuinely magical moment.” The Sunday Telegraph SYDNEY SEASON Venue: Capitol Theatre, 13 Campbell Street, Haymarket Season: 16 November 2012 – Sunday 13 January 2013 Performances: Tue 7pm, Wed to Sat 8pm; Matinees Wed 1pm, Sat 2pm & Sun 3pm Tickets: from $69.60 to $129.90 Bookings: Ticketmaster 1300 723 038 or ticketmaster.com.au

Licks Ice Cream LICKS is a family owned and operated business. We have been making our own ice cream, sorbet and yoghurt since 1984. We source our ingredients from local suppliers and make our ice cream on-site following a traditional formula. Available from our shop at The Entrance or from our butterscotch coloured, mobile coffee and ice cream cart found at many local markets. LICKS can cater for customers with special dietary requirements. Our fruit based sorbets are not made with dairy, all our ice cream and yoghurts are egg free and most of our flavours are gluten free. If ice cream is not your thing but you still crave a rich creamy treat – we make our own fudge too! LICKS proudly drink, serve and recommend Morgan’s Handcrafted Coffee. Roasted at the base of the Blue Mountains and sourced using Fair Trade Principles. We grind Morgan’s Handcrafted Coffee on-site once you have ordered. We choose to use their M-Organic and Swiss Water Decaffeinated coffee blends and their organic drinking chocolate.
