Ken Duncan’s World of Light Ken Duncan’s brand new exhibition, World of Light, has now been unveiled in his Erina Heights Gallery. And what a world of light this exhibition reveals... From an incandescent image of the Taj Mahal taken from a refreshing new angle, to a seemingly ancient Chinese man poling his fishing boat down the Li River in Guilin; from autumn gold reflected in the mirror of Lake Tekapo, New Zealand, to a family of Indian elephants at rest by a waterhole; from an aerial image of swirling turquoise water and white sand near the Great Barrier Reef to the pastel hues of twilight crowning The Dolomites in northern Italy - this new series of images evokes a raft of emotions. To coincide with the new exhibition, Ken Duncan also launched his new book, Life’s a Journey – the Adventure Continues. In this long-awaited sequel to his 25-year retrospective Life’s an Adventure (2008) Ken shares previously untold stories from his extensive career and presents a series of exquisite new photos captured worldwide. It tells much more of the unique Ken Duncan story. Ken’s Erina Heights Gallery is open 7 days from 10am – 5pm at 414 The Entrance Road, Erina Heights, 02 4367 6701 or www.kenduncan.com

The piece de resistance will be the steam engines. There will be two steam portable engines - one from the USA and one from England. “Sooty the traction engine that is coming is road registered and for the first time in many decades the public will see a steam engine trundling down the main street of Gosford - a sight not to be missed. SUMMER IN THE GARDEN Looking after your soil is the key to a luxuriant and easy care garden. With a little “Tender Loving Care” for the soil, your precious plants will thrive and grow over the summer...even on the sunniest of days. The first step is to look after yourself..... Slip Slop Slap before you get down and dirty ! Try to garden in the cool of the morning or the longer evenings and leave midday for the Lizards. Next step is to provide some food for your plants. Spread around some manure or pelletised organic fertilizer such as OrganicExtra to gently feed the new growth over the growing season. If the soil seems dry, consider using a soil wetting agent to improve water penetration and save on water. Its easy to scatter on at this stage, or use a liquid form from a watering Can. Now you need to provide some insulation and protection for those important roots....a little summer blanket ! There are many types of mulch

from pine bark, through sugar cane to pebbles. The common factors are that they hold moisture in the soil, keep the heat out, and help reduce weeds. It’s hard to think of a plant that does not appreciate mulching, just keep it a little away from the trunk of the plant, and make it nice and thick. Lucerne and Sugar Cane are best for the veggie and flower gardens. Use Tea Tree or Eucalyptus mulch around shrubs and natives. Polished pebbles really highlight your succulents in a pot or the garden. Last of all is the watering. With rain still scarce it is important not to waste town water, so irrigate gardens deeply a couple of times a week. Use the cooler times of the day so that the water doesn’t just evaporate back into the atmosphere. Small pots might need watering every day in the height of summer, larger ones maybe every second day.

“Everything old is new again” Furniture of yesteryear was constructed of beautiful timbers and built by highly crafted tradespeople. Polished by French polishers and made to wear the test of time. Today we live in a throwaway society, not only do we throw away these beautiful pieces of quality, but we buy, and then in a short time, throw away what I call fashion accessory pieces, made in China and made for a fashion which is not meant to last. These are inexpensive, look the part, but definitely have a time limit. So what do we do with our treasures of yesteryear? We reinvent them, appreciate their longevity and understand where they can fit into today’s designs. It is amazing what a coat of paint can do for the look of an item, it can transform a tired old piece into a new “work of art” with a little imagination new handles, some slight adjustments and then..... “ Everything old is new again”. Have a look at the images of our before and after shots of four different pieces of furniture with descriptions of the process.

Before A Television cabinet/wine cupboard that we stripped & sanded. We removed the wine rack and replaced it with a single shelf making this piece more versatile, it can now be used as a dining room sideboard or as a TV Cabinet or whatever you would prefer. We then resurfaced in a chalky white finish leaving the top timber. This finish has given the piece a beachy/Coastal feel.

After

Before Two old light fittings rescued from the junk yard, reinvented by covering it in our liquid bronze metal coating & adding some verdigris. These pieces have now been transformed into great garden sculpture that doubles up as a candelabra. Beautiful for added ambience for any occasion.

After

Before The lounge we stripped and took it back to its original timber finish then had it upholstered in a beautiful velvet print fabric. We also did the same process to an old rocker used a complementary fabric on this and added some throw cushions using the fabric used on the lounge. A beautiful & very vintage look, homely and welcoming.

After

Before The utility seat we sanded back and applied our liquid metal iron coating to rusted it and now it is a very cute and handy seat to sit on and take your shoes off while storing them inside the seat. Sit back with a glass of wine and read your latest magazine.

Renovating or Updating?

I have been specializing in painted finishes on kitchens and furniture on the Central Coast for 20 years. There are many advantages to paint finishes, whether you are revamping something old or creating something new. Not only are the advantages of paint an aesthetic appeal, in today’s living there is also the environmental issue. A lot of synthetic coatings are being used today which omit toxic fumes for the lifespan of the product. Once paint has cured, it omits no harmful vapours and can also lock in vapours from the underlying substrate, making it environmentally friendly. Whether it is new or updating your home. You can get as creative as you like. Using paint and the beauty of it is that you can always paint over it at a later date as fashions or trends change. An easy way to change your furniture, whether updating or moving house, is to have your existing furniture repainted professionally, to create a whole new look and feel. Phone us to find out all of your options. You will be amazed.

No two pieces are the same. I could rave on, but why not pop in and see for yourself?

So, where are we? I can’t believe the number of people who still, even as recently as last weekend, say to me ‘I’ve been going past here for years and never knew you were here’ ..best kept secret?! Wollombi is located north-east of Sydney, just 90 minutes from Sydney’s northern suburbs. A significant meeting point on the northsouth trade and travel route for coastal Aboriginal peoples, the Wollombi Valley was inhabited for thousands of years by Aborigines. Their unique shape and style are very different to the normal marquees available through other companies, and the beautiful chandelier creates an absolutely stunning feature in the marquee. The high quality canvas used in their manufacture keeps the marquee cool and totally waterproof ensuring complete comfort. A recent wedding at Fernbank was themed by Decorations to You, and Central Coast Carriages delivered the bride to the ceremony site adjacent to the Rotunda by the lake. “Who said there is no Santa Claus...ridiculous!” I’ve been reading many stories about Christmas, All full of love to mankind, and the generosity of people to those less fortunate. There are many stories where someone asks “is there really a Santa Claus?” I say ,of course there is. You see signs of him everywhere at Christmas time. On cards, in shopping centres for photos, blow up versions of him on front lawns, and of course don’t forget the Santa parades. No Santa? RIDICULOUS… Yes we do all get caught up in the commercial Hype of Christmas, but we

allow ourselves to do that. A gift can be very inexpensive, something we use or look at everyday which reminds us of the person that gave the gift. As simple as a mug we drink out of every day, who doesn’t like a special mug? A little decorative bird for the window sill, or a lovely scented candle, which when lit sends out a glow that only a candle can do. Kind regards

Toowoon Bay Gallery

www.centralcoastimag.com.au Our thanks to all who have supported the gallery since 1977. Our move into dramatic pieces of handmade glass amazes and delights our customers. The vibrant colours absolutely “lift” white and off-white rooms. Not only are they producing stunning vases, but the makers are getting very adventurous and the sculptural pieces are a delight. At this time of the year we have to stock not only magic Christmas presents but also cater for the season’s holiday makers. Come and see our expanded range of 3-D bookmarks, solar “groovers” and many metal sports figures. Can we ask one more thing of our friends and customers? The Carousel This historic icon has charmed and delighted young and old at The Entrance since 1930. It has seen a number of owners since its arrival in Australia from France in the early 1900s and is now part of the National Trust classified Haas Family carnival, a family that has 400 years of carnival ancestry. The carousel, which was built in the late 1800s in Germany, was originally ‘powered’ by a pony but was converted to steam at the turn of the century. It remained steam driven until the 1950s when an old chev. engine was installed, and was converted to electricity in the 1970s. Its reed pipe organ, operated by bellows, remained in commission until 1950. Music is now supplied by tape, although the organ front has been restored. The carousel has pride of place on The Entrance waterfront where it is visited by not only today’s children, but by the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents of those children.

The Italian Restaurant Every now and then you just have to say thank you to those that look after you when you go out to enjoy a meal at a favourite place. My friends and I want to say just that to Steve and his team at one of the most pleasant dinning venues on the Coast. On the waterfront at The Entrance the view is so relaxing you are already in the right frame of mind when you sit down. When you look over the Menu to choose your sumptuous meal expect this to take a little time, as the menu is extensive and mouth-watering you may change your mind a few times before you finally decide on something and that could be to come back often enough to work your way through the menu, as we have done many times now. This is why we come back often because the food is always delicious and well presented; we have never been disappointed, ever. There are not many places you can say that every time you dine there the food is getting better and better. Some of our favourite dishes are the Pork Spare Ribs, Oysters Kilpatrick, The Barramundi, Scampi, scaloppini any of the Pizzas. The pasta is made on the premises and the Gnocci is just superb. The Bruschetta is the best we have tasted, one could just go on and on, it is all so good. As you see by this photo our last meal was the Seafood Platter. Now my friend this is finger licking good. Finished with a superb coffee and a Mr Pissa gelato. YUM. Another good reason to come here is it is pet friendly if you have your dog with you ask for a table to be made up on the boardwalk and they will comply. Beautiful smiling faces will make your time here a joy. See you there soon.

Carry an EPIRB for Safer Boating An EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon) is an electronic device that, when activated, assists rescuers locate those in distress. If you are going offshore, you are required to carry a 406 MHz EPIRB. Marine Rescue recommends that all vessels, whether voyaging inshore or offshore have one onboard. Marine EPIRBs float in the event of a major incident and can still send their signal to the satellite. Personal EPIRBs are also available for fitting to lifejackets and provide additional safety for crew on boats offshore.

An EPIRB is compulsory for offshore boaters. They are an invaluable tool for boaters, particularly in our popular bays and inlets. An EPIRB fitted with GPS narrows a search to within 120 metres, dramatically increasing your chance of survival. Orbiting satellites will calculate your position if the EPIRB has no GPS capability, and this can take about 90 minutes on average, but may take up to five hours depending on conditions. The position has an accuracy of around 5km. Rescuers must wait for confirmation of the beacon’s position before sending a

SAR team. After purchase, register your EPRIB with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), simply contact beacons.amsa.gov. au. A registered 406 beacon provides rescuers details of you and your boat and your emergency contact. This saves time and enables rescuers to provide positive assistance. A life-saving investment of around $300 with built in GPS – what a bargain, and a perfect gift for any boatie. Photo: An EPIRB with or without built in GPS are a great safety investment

Seacoast Fishing SPRING AND SUMMER

Our commercial fishing business has been operating from Kincumber for the past 9 years and we have the freshest fish in town, straight from the boat to our shop, which is located 400m from the scenic road roundabout towards Macmasters Beach. Our catch consists of Snapper, Ocean Jackets, Bream, Trevally, mullet (when in season ) and Lobsters. We also have local Oysters, school prawns and a variety of frozen products. As our weather warms up, our catches continue to increase and our lobsters start to move heading out to sea for food. Our boys know when and where to put their traps out. During the winter months when the mullet are running we keep the male mullet for lobster bait. They split and salt the mullet and hang out to dry for a few weeks, the lobsters love this feed, it also lasts longer in the traps. About mid November is when our lobsters are available. We have tanks on our premises, where we store them for up to a month ready for transport. If you need lobsters, just pick them from our tanks and we can pack them for you, we cook everyday, so your choices are cooked, live, or asleep! We are open Thurs, Fridays 11am to 6pm and saturday 9am to 6pm. Ph: 43686160 Patanga Street, Kincumber

SNOW WHITE will be performed by the students from Marian Street Drama School and will enchant young audience from Saturday 11 January playing twice Sydney’s all-time favourite summer treat is back…

Kenneth Grahame’s Wind in The Willows “You’ll love this production - no matter what age you are” – The Sun Herald “Pure charm for adults and children alike” – The Age Sydney’s favourite family entertainment The Wind in the Willows continues its well-loved summer tradition returning to the beautiful surrounds of Royal Botanic Garden, Sydney, playing from Tuesday 7 to Saturday 25 January 2014. Kenneth Grahame’s immortal story of life on the riverbank is a rollicking yet gentle adventure, starring the pompous, arrogant, vain, hilarious Toad – a favourite with children everywhere. Toad, along with his better-behaved friends, Ratty, Mole, Otter and Badger, as well as the rascally Weasel, have come to life every summer for the past 13 years providing enchanting and lively entertainment for all the family. This critically acclaimed outdoor theatre production delivers music, songs and laughs. There is fun for young and old as the Head Chief Rabbit transforms the audience into rabbits with a waggle of the ears and a wiggle of the nose. The young ‘rabbits’ are encouraged to get involved in the action, and are given every opportunity to scream out loud,

Centre for healing and well-being in Holgate Valentina explains … “What the …. Is Ho’oponopono?” Ho’oponopono is an ancient Hawaiian healing technique for reconciliation and forgiveness; extremely useful for clearing patterns and made famous more recently by the work of clinical psychologist Dr. Ihaleakala Hew Len in a clinic for mentally ill criminals at the Hawaii State Hospital. Instead of treating each patient in the traditional sense he would focus his attention on the files of each patient and practice ho’oponopono. He was so successful in healing people and changing the work culture that after his tenure there the ward was closed down; the need for it no longer existed. This is documented in a renowned book written by Joe Vitale with Dr Ihaleakala Hew Len - ‘Zero Limits – the secret Hawaiian System for Wealth, Health, Peace and More’ Self Identity Ho’oponopono brings you back to a clean slate, back to zero point. To explain it laterally ho’oponopono acts like a rubber – you focus on the issue and say four key phrases until all the negativity is rubbed out, bringing your life force back to a clean slate. Sounds silly I know but keep in mind that although you address the ‘issue’ when doing ho’oponopono, you are actually saying the phrases to God Source – expressing love, asking for forgiveness, being grateful and

apologising for anything you may have done at any time to cause this pattern to exist … you are sweeping the path ways clean between you and the issue, allowing the energy of the issue to be released. The four simple phrases are: I love you, I’m sorry, please forgive me, and thank you. This technique can be used in any situation, business, relationship or household. If you want to clear a recurring issue or pattern that someone is repetitively exhibiting then clear the pattern in yourself. Clients say ‘why? I’m not the one behaving badly or constantly manifesting this or that illness, etc.’ If that pattern exists anywhere in your life you are on some level holding it on the planet … you would not even be in the same room with another person if your weren’t holding the same patterns ….. so don’t be resentful, just focus on the issue and clear it … what you clear in/for others you also clear for yourself … and miraculously some other ‘problem’ area of your life changes … this is because you never

know how the pattern is representing itself. Any drawbacks? You can feel exhausted and flat after a session of ho’oponopono as the negative patterns rise and release – you kind of feel the ugliness as it passes out of your field of 3D existence (by that I mean your everyday life). The shift and incredible lightness of being usually occurs within 1hr – 36hrs and is really quite remarkable; carries with it a definite WOW factor. As a footnote Dr Ihaleakala Hew Len learnt his technique from Morrnah Simeona famous for having a plaque in her office inscribed with the ultimate ho’oponopono phrase of personal responsiblity: “Peace Begins with me”

The KarmaSpa Relaxation Clinic is now open!

Yoga Nidra

Jacqui Fletcher will guide you through a Yoga Nidra Session, leaving you deeply relaxed, ready to take on the world! Jacqui trained fulltime with the Satyananda Yoga® Academy at Mangrove Creek. In addition to a comprehensive study of all aspects of Satyananda Yoga®, she has also had extensive training in anatomy & physiology as well as exercise science. Relaxation is something we do naturally, and we don't need any special training or techniques. However, deep relaxation is something very different. It quietens your mind and releases physical tension in your body. In a state of deep relaxation, your heart beat and breathing slow down, and your body and mind become deeply calm. There are many techniques to help you relax deeply, including the practice of yoga nidra, or 'psychic sleep'. Yoga Nidra comes from the Indian yoga tradition. The technique could be described as a lying down form of meditation that uses the whole body as a focus of awareness. Practitioners say that with regular practice, Yoga Nidra, like meditation, can have profound physical, psychological and spiritual benefits.

Places are limited, so we ask you to please reserve your space by calling us at KarmaSpa on 43 51 0777. Please also refer to our website for more information.
