Your first commission Commissioning an artwork by your favourite artist is exciting and a great way to get an insight into the creative process. Here are four tips to help you towards taking the plunge: 1. Find an artist whose work you already love and check out as much of their previous work as possible. 2. Think about your requirements including size, ideas, colour palette, and yes, budget. 3. Bite the bullet and discuss your ideas with the artist. 4. Discuss terms including time -frame, delivery, costings, and whether it is possible to view early and mid stage progress. Bobbie P Gallery specializes in commissioned artworks, with a selection of local artists

producing original works including paintings, sculptures and glassware. For further information, contact Bobbie P Gallery on 0490 061 949 or visit us at 11 Alison Road, Wyong.

Aluminium panels are proving to be a versatile product and they are now being used in kitchens, bathrooms, feature walls and counter fronts as well as stunning ceilings and restoration projects. This allows for easy installation. They come in a large selection of patterns. We can paint them for you in a polyurethane finish which can come in any colour or gloss level. The benefits of a regular massage... Many people would agree that a massage will make you feel good mentally and physically. To educate my clients to maintain their wellbeing a regular massage will aid the body into feeling better. "Mother Lotus" by Rhonda Castle & Nardja Williams

Sculpture on the Greens This year’s Sculpture on the Greens, open from 8th April to 22nd May and hosted at Mercure Kooindah Waters - Wyong, will feature an array of sculptures. Primarily an outdoor exhibition, 2016 will also see an extended indoor area, so there will be something for everyone on display. Among the many artists contributing to this year’s Sculpture on the Greens, several will be making their event debut. New exhibitors will include Ron Royes with “The Blind leading the Blind”, comprising of a 15 piece ceramic sculptural installation. Other new exhibitors are Ian Bell from the South Coast, Simon Hearn from the Blue Mountains and Keith Chidzey from Sydney. These three recently participated in the inaugural Wood Symposium at Rylstone. Returning exhibitors include Ro Murray with “Bush Tucker Doesn’t Use Plastic” made from repurposed materials, and Al Phemister – ‘Anenomes’ a steel sculpture. Sculpture on the Greens has a diverse setting, from gardens, a lake, golf course fairways, and channels flowing through the grounds, which always entices an array of work by artists influenced by water, such as Angela van Boxtel “Cosmogony - A Plastic Micro Cosmos” which is a floating installation. Last year saw

a collaboration with Nardja Williams and the Castles called “Mother Lotus” which was lit at night. Established artists who regularly exhibit at Sculpture on the Greens include Jacek Wankowski, this year with “Inflorescence 1-6” a site-specific installation of six independent and separate pieces. Another regular is John Fitzmaurice with “Think Big”, a mirror finished stainless steel piece. Sculpture on the Greens also runs an education program for High school children from the local region and has 4 Mentorships for Emerging Artists. Come along to the exhibition to see what they have produced. Admission to 2016’s Sculpture on the Greens, which is open daily from 8th April to 22nd May, is free. Coast to Lake Walk

Discover Wyong Shire Summer may have come to an end and with it the long hot days spent at the beach, which now seem like distant memories as we all head back to work and school. That is no excuse to stay in, instead it is the perfect reason to get out and about and discover what else is happening in Wyong Shire after all it is a great place to holiday and live all year round. While we may have some of the most beautiful beaches in the world (so say we) we also have much, much more at our finger tips with a food and cultural renaissance happening right in front of us. Walk down the main strip of any town centre from Bateau Bay to Norah Head and back to Yarramalong and find vibrant cafes serving cold drip coffees and delicate patisserie or locally owned shops selling quirky clothing, handcrafted furniture and unique homewares. You can find an art, craft or farmers market on every weekend to wander through and if you want to keep wandering bush walks and boardwalks are plentiful. Do yourself a favour and pick one weekend this month, take a drive to a suburb other than your own and go try something or somewhere new. If you need some help getting started follow @ discoverwyongshire on Instagram where we

Now that temperatures are on a downward slope and the days are still long it is the perfect time to try the Coast to Lake Walk if you haven’t already had the pleasure. This pearl of a walk includes easy use paths and boardwalks, grassy knolls with parks and play equipment and rock platforms with rock pools ripe for discovery. Along the way you will discover the diversity of our coast line, you’ll see swans on the lakes and pelicans at the channel and if you keep our eyes peeled you can see whales and dolphins out to sea. If you have all day to spend on the walk stop for a short detour up the Long Jetty, a play in the park at Toowoon Bay, a skate at Picnic Point, a swim at The Entrance Ocean Baths or simply take a sit on a bench and enjoy the exhaustive views at Edith Ring Rest. Dogs are allowed on the majority of the walk as long as they are on a lead so why not take your fur family along to join in the fun. The walk covers 7.6 kilometers, can be covered in two and half hours at a moderate pace and is divided into four sections (see map). The Carousel This historic icon has charmed and delighted young and old at The Entrance since 1930. It has seen a number of owners since its arrival in Australia from France in the early 1900s and is now part of the National Trust classified Haas Family carnival, a family that has 400 years of carnival ancestry. The carousel, which was built in the late 1800s in Germany, was originally ‘powered’ by a pony but was converted to steam at the turn of the century. It remained steam driven until the 1950s when an old chev. engine was installed, and was converted to electricity in the 1970s. Its reed pipe organ, operated by bellows, remained in commission until 1950. Music is now supplied by tape, although the organ front has been restored. The carousel has pride of place on The Entrance waterfront where it is visited by not only today’s children, but by the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents of those children.

What to See & Do The Pelican Feeding in The Entrance Memorial Park is a highlight of any visit. Daily at 3.30pm The Entrance Heritage Walk is one of the best on the Central Coast and visitors will also enjoy the Coast to Lake Walk. The Peninsula a truly special place For those who live on the Peninsula, we all appreciate how truly special the area is with its safe and beautiful beaches, picturesque waterways, accessible National Parks, vibrant town centres, good transport and easy access to Sydney. Woy Woy is one of the busiest rail stations in New South Wales as locals commute to Sydney for work each morning and return each night to the relaxed Peninsula lifestyle. It is no wonder that more people choose to live and visit the Peninsula as they discover its wonderful attributes. Few places can boast one of the best ferry rides in Australia from Ettalong Beach to Palm Beach via the Palm Beach Ferry or the spectacular train ride from Woy Woy to Sydney via the Hawkesbury River. Nor can you ignore the wonderful Ettalong Beach Foreshore, the Woy Woy Waterfront or the many spectacular lookouts and National Parks. Without doubt our beaches are the cleanest and

safest on the Central Coast boasting Ettalong Beach, Umina and Ocean Beach, Pearl Beach and Patonga. Importantly, our town centres have become more vibrant with the bustling Umina Beach one of the busiest retail strip shopping centres on the Central Coast. This is supported by major shopping facilities in Woy Woy including Deepwater Plaza and Peninsula Plaza and boutique shopping in Ettalong Beach. In recent years we have seen the emergence of a great cafĂŠ culture and a range of high quality restaurants especially in the Ettalong Beach village centre. With great schools, terrific services and a full range of shopping centres, the demographics of the Peninsula are changing with young families and professionals moving in to complement our older population. No longer just somewhere to retire (and why not), the Peninsula has become a place for younger people to raise families and enjoy a lifestyle that is the envy of Sydney. Come visit the Peninsula and discover the reasons why others have chosen to make this area their home and a holiday destination.

portraiture and abstracts. Gallery proprietor Monique McDonnell is now living on the Central Coast, although originally from Melbourne and has always been fascinated by the art of portraiture and she discovered her love for colour at an early age. However due to her work which took her around the globe for many years she found it difficult to invest in further artistic training after school. Over the past few years she found the time and the opportunity to seek private tuition while living in The Channel Islands. And while spending long stretches of time in France she developed her style in Pop Art using acrylics and diverse media. Since moving to NSW in 2013 she sought local tuition to concentrate on her artistic journey, enabling an extension of her style on a number of levels. Monique is currently concentrating on portraiture, working mostly with acrylics and multi media.

Instantly Enhance Your Look – A Whiter, Brighter Smile is Perfect for every Occasion! Until now the choices for cosmetic teeth whitening have been: pay lots of money to a dentist or buy a retail product that you take home which hurts and/or doesn’t work very well. SmileLABS gives you whiter teeth immediately without hurting your hip pocket or your teeth! Our revolutionary combination of patented gel and LED lights gives your teeth the whiteness your smile deserves! It’s fast, painless and less than a third of what the dentists charge for the same result. Our product and system is non-invasive, non-burning, it leaves no after-taste; importantly whilst giving great whitening results it does not damage the enamel, the dentine or the teeth at all. Instead of teeth whitening costing between $500 and $1500 at the dentist, we have a premium affordable whitening system that is incredibly inexpensive as we charge $99 for a Single (15 minute) session and $149 for a Double (30 minute) session. A Triple (45 minute) session is $199 and a Quad (1 hour) session is $249. The results are spectacular and our clients leave very happy. Don’t spend thousands at the dentist for the brighter whiter smile you’ve always wanted. Experience the revolution that is already changing smiles today at SmileLABS Terrigal. Let's go Walkabout! Going into the Australian bush is like wondering into a different world. There are gentle creatures all around you, but if your eyes and ears don’t know what to look for, you will feel as if you are completely alone. You pass by unaware of the swamp wallaby standing perfectly still just meters away. Butterflies flitter silently. A honey eater dances like a shadow amongst the banksia flowers. A family of skinks basks in the crevices of a sandstone rock face. Even a huge emu disappears in front of you, lying on the ground, feathers blending with the leaf litter. The days are wonderful, but it is as night falls that the magic really starts to happen. The almost imperceptible whoo-whoo-whoo of the tawny frogmouth. The flap of a flying fox with its black wings barely visible against the inky sky. The rustle of a bandicoot with a pouch full of joeys digging for bugs in the moonlight. The possum hanging motionless by its tail to reach the tastiest leaves. For those who love the idea of going bush but don’t really know how to go about it, just book in for a “Wild Sleep Out” at Walkabout Park. Your ranger will guide

you along the bush tracks and introduce you to some amazing Aussie animals, many roaming free in the bush. After dark your ranger will take you spotlighting for wild creatures. The evening ends with a campfire before everyone heads off to bed. You can choose whether to camp comfortably under canvas, or enjoy a little luxury in an eco-cottage. Wake up with the kangaroos, breakfast amongst the gum trees and go ‘behind the scenes’ for more animal encounters before the park opens to the general public. Go to www.walkaboutpark.com.au for details about the different ways you can enjoy the animals and bush at Walkabout Park. An exciting place for kids. A fascinating place for adults. Whether you want to stride out along the tracks or relax at the visitor centre, this is a great adventure for everyone.

Peninsula Theatre Woy Woy

Dinkum Assorted by Linda Aronson

Probably the only play in the world written for a cast of fifteen women and a nanny goat, “Dinkum Assorted” is a wild comedy with music, moods and mirth, set alongside some thought-provoking stories about women striving for personal and professional freedom. Set in a remote North Queensland country town biscuit factory during World War II, the play shows how the all-female cast factory workers fight to save the factory, run a ‘Mum’s Army’ Civil Defence Unit, put on a show for the War Effort – and cope with the fact that two thousand US airmen have just been stationed outside town. “Dinkum Assorted” is Woy Woy Little Theatre’s second production for 2016 at Woy Woy’s Peninsula Theatre, and the first to be directed by Fran Kendall since 2008 when she directed another Australian classic, “Lipstick Dreams”. “Dinkum Assorted” was a success from its opening night at the Sydney Opera House and has for many years been a perennial favourite across Australia because of its many fine parts for women. The cast includes Lonny Edge, Wendy de Beyer, Teanau Mason, Catie Elgood, Amelia NewellClose, Christine Cherry, Lianne Haddock, Helen Herridge, Pamela Brown, Kathryn Peterson, Shea Wicks and Ann Wilden. Bookings can be made through Woy Woy Little Theatre’s website: woywoylt.com or phone 4344 4737 and leave a message after the beep. Performance Dates: Friday & Saturday evenings (8pm) on May 20, 21, 27, 28, June 3 & 4. Sunday matinees (2pm) on May 22, 29 and June 5, with an additional matinee on Saturday March 14 @ 2pm. Be a Responsible Boater Boat responsibly – always be alert and careful when using your boat. Make sure you are prepared and always wear your life jacket every time you are on the water. Accidents happen very quickly and unexpectedly. If you are geared up, you are ready to help yourself and your passengers. Develop the Life Jacket habit! Know the Nautical Rules of the Road Knowing the nautical rules of the road is important for all boaters. Understand what to do when meeting, crossing or over-taking other boats. This can prevent costly damage to your boat, personal injury or even loss of life. If you think there is a chance of collision you should slow down, stop or steer away from the situation. Maintaining a good lookout and travelling at a safe speed are part of the navigation rules and should be an important part of your boat procedures.

Stay Sober While Boating It’s dangerous to operate a boat when drinking. Operating a boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs is illegal. A boat driver with blood alcohol content over .05 is ten times more likely to die in a boating accident than one with a zero blood alcohol level. Be safe – stay sober. www.centralcoastimag.com.au

The Italian Restaurant Review Our party of five chose a scorching hot day in the middle of a heat wave, to visit Azzuro Blu Wharf at The Entrance. We were immediately refreshed by a Valley of the Giants Semillon Sauvignon Blanc 2016, along with the amazing view of the Sea. The meal was outstanding! We had a great choice of seafood starters ranging from fresh oysters that tasted heavenly, stuffed squid with chorizo, chilli and breadcrumbs which was so tender and delicious, lightly battered calamari that melted in the mouth and also a wonderful fresh tomato bruschetta.

Main courses ranged from Scampi alla Grillia – beautifully grilled prawns - that were tasty and fleshy on a bed of rocket and parmesan salad, a traditional pasta Marinara which was subtly herbed with continental parsley, a whole champagne lobster Mornay that had a gorgeous cheese sauce, chicken Ripieni - tender chicken breast fillet that was filled with chorizo, ricotta and sundried tomatoes and had a tasty creamy masala, bacon and mushroom sauce. A lot of these great choices on the menu were suitable for

our gluten intolerant guests. We noticed other patrons Food enjoying a meat worth and seafood grill travelling for! that we wished we had ordered, (good reason to visit The Italian Restaurant again) as the quality of food is truly amazing all round. Desserts were fantastic, everyone loves gelato and we tried mango and passion fruit which were presented in beautiful cocktail glasses and which were consumed with relish. There was a delicious baci (Italian kiss) filled with a tasty hazelnut chocolate ice cream and a cannoli filled with a superb ricotta custard. Coffees were hot and of good quality served by Kaitlin, our attentive waitress. Congratulations to Kelly the manager for the way the establishment is run, as the food and service were excellent! We can’t wait to eat there again. Emilia Risi

Seacoast Fishing Our commercial fishing business has been operating from Kincumber for the past 8 years and we have the freshest fish in town, straight from the boat to our shop, which is located 400 metres from the Scenic Road roundabout towards Macmasters Beach. Our catch consists of snapper, ocean jackets, bream, trevally, mullet. Mullet being the catch of the month (April) and also Eastern Rock Lobsters. We also have local oysters, school prawns and a variety of frozen products. As our weather cools and the westerly winds start, mullet season begins for us. This happens each year, when the mullet ‘ school up’ in large patches and head out of the estuaries and travel out to sea to spawn. Our licenced boys use the hauling nets to catch mullet travelling along the coastline before the fish head out to sea. Mullet has the best omega 3 oil content, which is so good for us, flavour is strong, but a great fish to eat. Open: Thurs, Fridays 11am to 6pm and Saturdays 9am to 6pm. SEACOAST FISHING at Scenic Rd, Kincumber, 400m from Cullens Road roundabout “a real fishing home”. Come and try the freshest fish in town!

Karinyas Restaurant Our group of three were eager to try Karinyas restaurant at Mercure’s Kooindah Waters. The establishment has undergone a wonderful transformation at the hands of general manager Stephan Leroy. Once Klara, Pam and I read the selections on the Karinyas menu, we could not wait to experience the plethora of tastes created by head chef Keiron Brabender. Murphy Grimes took great care of us on the night and recommended a variety of Robert Oatley wines to match our choices of entrees and main dishes. The service was outstanding and we were comfortable in her capable hands. The entree platter contained a selection of seared Japanese scallops, pork and pistachio terrine, crispy skin Barker Creek pork belly, and roaring forties King Island blue cheese that we shared, but we also chose the Vietnamese crunchy salad of shredded vegetables, spiced wantons and candied chillies and the wonderfully fresh and subtly flavoured SA Coffin Bay oysters. They all met our expectations. (We wallowed in the flavour of the creamy blue cheese and the wonderfully cooked pork belly!) The 2014 Robert Oatley Riesling and 2014 Chardonnay married well with these fantastic selections. There are set menus with good choices of starters and main courses for affordable prices which are recommended. People with dietary needs are also well catered for. We wanted to try a variety of main courses which consisted of a beautifully pink Veal cutlet with Cafe de Paris butter and grilled asparagus, slow roasted pork neck marinated in honey and white Miso paste on stir fried bok choy, and

Kooindah Waters

Food worth travelling for! crispy skinned duck breast, cauliflower puree, pan fried asparagus and sour cranberry jus, all cooked to perfection and with flair. The flavours were delicious and were enhanced by the Robert Oatley Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 and the Shiraz 2014.

Keiron Brabender suggested that we definitely keep room for dessert, and we could not agree with him more! Pam Duncan chose the white Belgian Callebaut chocolate orange tart with fresh raspberries and she was transported to a heavenly place. We also tried the Eton mess with meringue, berry compote and vanilla crème fraiche. Klara loved the crème caramel with fresh raspberries and almond tuille, and my personal favourite was the apple hazelnut frangipani puff pastry galette with caramel macadamia ice cream which was truly delicious. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal at Karinyas Restaurant and can highly recommend it as a great place for a sensational taste experience! Emilia Krumm www.centralcoastimag.com.au

Cloth: From Seeds to Bloom by Julie Paterson 6 Feb - 3 Apr 2016

Contemporary textiles commonly sit at the practical end of art and design. Cloth: From Seeds to Bloom is comprised of Julie Paterson's domestic textile objects, Cloth: From which take the viewer on a journey from Seeds to Bloom the humble seed through to the luscious - Julie Paterson bloom. Nine key textile groupings are broken into individual rooms with each displaying objects rich with pattern.

www.monthlyimag.com.au

The annual extravaganza held in the small town of Aberdeen in the Upper Hunter, renowned for its strong Scottish heritage, is being held on Saturday, July 2 at Jefferson Park, Aberdeen. Now in the 17th year, the highland games is an event for the whole family. It features the massed pipes and drums, individual pipe band displays, Tartan Warrior’s with their feats of strength, Scottish highland and country dancing and many stalls. Being Aberdeen’s signature event, the highland games involves the whole community and in the past has been well patronised by families from all over the Hunter Valley and beyond. Visitors, guests, pipe bands and others will be coming from as far as Lithgow, Moree, Dubbo, Tamworth, Armidale and the Sydney metropolitan area as well as interstate to take part in the grand combination of history, pageantry and novelty. A grand parade within the grounds will kick the programme off at 9.00am. Honoured Guest for this year’s event will be Lachie Macdonald, High Commissioner for Clan Donald in Australia. Aberdeen Highland Games president Charles Cooke said, “We are indebted to the mining industry, the thoroughbred industry and many others within the Upper Hunter region for their ongoing support. Surplus funds, have each year been put back into the local communities which has amounted to a figure in excess of $80,000 since 2000.” The games will be followed by a Ceilidh, a Celtic social gathering with a fine meal, music, stories and dancing at St Joseph's high School MPC on Saturday night from 6.30pm. For more information visit the website at www.aberdeenhighlandgames.com or Facebook. Tickets may be purchased on line via TryBooking. com.au or through the Scone Visitor Information Centre.
