Welcome to the Central Coast in November!
his team at Avoca Beach Butchery with 8 new Awards this Year.
November is a wonderful month to really enjoy the sensational Central Coast.
You will need to go over the iMag from cover to cover as there is too much happening to list it all here.
Not only is the weather usually perfect, with warmer days and nights, starry skies, the smell of the freshness that is nature dancing through our nostrils. You can hear the hoofs pounding the ground because it is our Spring Carnival Season and we celebrate the Melbourne Cup, we also celebrate my birthday. As a Sagittarian I love horses and am so happy to start my birthday celebration from then to the end of the month. The Coast never lacks for entertainment and this month we start with the Oyster Festival, horse racing, fishing & yachting, the new Ken Duncan Exhibition, Gosford City Christmas parade, a singing workshop and the fantastic NAISDA Dance group is on at Laycock again .
It is with great pride I can tell you this month we have added 8 new pages to our magazine.

Let your feet do the walking (or running) on the Coast! Born to run? The Central Coast has your November sorted! This month the region is home to three great events to test your stamina – on the weekend of November 10 the Great North Walk 100’s, organised by the Terrigal Trotters running club, offers 100 kilometre and 100 mile races along the Great North Walk from Teralba in Lake Macquarie through to Yarramalong in the lush Central Coast hinterland (100km) or Patonga on the Hawkesbury River (100mi). The route passes through some of Australia’s most outstanding scenery. The Stampede is coming to Glenworth Valley for the second year. This November 17 adventure race is an epic challenge that will push you to your limits, a gruelling 5km or 10km course taking in thick mud, huge cargo nets, giant slip & slide, live wires... one crazy day! On November 25, Central Coast Half Marathon rounds out a month of pounding feet – sponsored by
Mingara One, the course takes in the picturesque southern boundary of Tuggerah Lakes. Starting and finishing at The Entrance, there are turnaround points at Chittaway (half-marathon) and Killarney Vale (10km fun run). Now in its 12th year, the Brisbane Water Oyster Festival continues to support the region’s primary industry of Oyster Farming. Held at Ettalong Beach on November 11, you can also enjoy fine wine from local and regional producers, live entertainment, interactive fun for adults and kids... and plenty of gourmet food!
As November winds to a close, attention turns to Christmas! Several market events including the Handmade Craft Market, Davistown Charity Markets and Avoca Beachside Markets present the perfect opportunity to pick up an early Christmas gift. The beginning to the festive season is marked on the last weekend of November with the Gosford City Christmas Parade (Saturday 24th) and Lighting of the Christmas Tree in Toukley (Sunday 25th). For details on these events, things to do and much, much more – head to our website!

Marine Rescue Terrigal Marine Rescue Terrigal is one of the smaller Marine Rescue units in the Central Coast region. Size however, is not a significant issue, since service to the community and the safety of life in a marine environment are the reasons for its existence as a voluntary organization. Size of membership does not restrict Marine Rescue Terrigal in its essential duties of risk response in a marine area ranging from Box Head in the South, to Norah Head in the north, approximately 20 nautical miles (37.04 km) and 30 nautical miles (55.5 km) seawards, which amounts to an area of 1111.2 sq km of sea surface. During fundraising activities within the community, which are necessary for the unit's survival, a larger number of members would be of advantage as through more members and supporters fundraising would be more effective. New Members are always welcome and contact can be made via the Marine Rescue NSW website. Patron is the honourable Chris Hartcher MP.

The Gosford Art Prize Galleries One, Two and Foyer: Until to 25 November The Gosford Art Prize dates back to the early 1970s where it began in community halls and shopping centres. Since that time, the prize has found a home at the Gosford Regional Gallery and has become an important part of the annual program. The prize supports local artists and encourages artists and visitors from across New South Wales to visit Gosford. This year’s judge was Anthony Bond OAM, Director, Curatorial, Art Gallery of NSW. Lezlie Tilley was announced as this year’s overall winner, receiving $10,000 for her optical landscape painting After Fire. Other category winners were Mike Worrall in the 2-dimensional category, Jason Christopher in Sculpture, Declan Dovell in Photography and Keiko Matsui in the Ceramics section. Each winner receives a prize of $2,000. Graeme Balchin and Juz Kitxon were highly commended in the 2-dimensional and ceramics categories respectively. This year 390 artists entered a total of 534 artworks, all competing for a total of $19,000 worth of prize money. Entries were received from the four states of Eastern Australia displaying the continued growth of the importance of the Gosford Art Prize. In the spirit of bringing artists together, the Gallery will be hosting free artist talks every Saturday afternoon at 2pm throughout the Prize, giving the public a chance to meet and listen to four different artists each week. The Gallery would also like to extend an invitation to visitors to vote for their favourite work in the Viewers’ Choice Award; an opportunity for everyone to pick their favourite work from the exhibition. Morning Star New Day, New Spirit,
New Life
The Morning Star holds major significance in Aboriginal Cultures around Australia. NAISDA Dance College celebrate new life, each day reinvigorating the spirit through the physical ceremony of DANCE with our visiting Elders from Elcho Island. Aboriginal cultures celebrate the interconnectedness of being one with our environment not only through ceremony but in day to day life… While the Morning Star greets us each day it is up to us to take that opportunity to change our focus toward a positive future. NAISDA’s end of year production for 2012 will feature the haunting music and dances of the Datiwuy clan from Elcho Island in North East Arnhem Land as we celebrate the Morning Star. MORNING STAR is directed by acclaimed principal artist from Bangarra Dance Theatre, Patrick Thaiday. MORNING STAR will be Patrick Thaiday’s first directing role as he returns to NAISDA where he studied in the 1990s. “It’s such an honor for me to be invited back to NAISDA to direct the famous end of year production,” Thaiday said. “I’m looking forward with working with the Developing Artists and the contemporary choreographers to create a really exciting show. “It’s so exciting to see the young Developing Artists responding to the challenges not only of the traditional dances, but also the contemporary pieces created especially for this show,” he said. A highlight of SONG LINES will be the remounting of Graeme Murphy’s Trio from his popular work VAST.
MORNING STAR will feature all 30 of the NAISDA developing Artists, as well as Cultural Tutors – dancers, singers and musicians. MORNING STAR is on at Laycock Street Theatre on December 6, 7 and 8. Evening performances at 8pm. Matinee performances at 11am on Friday (including for school students) and at 1pm on Saturday. Princes $28 and $17 child/concession. Group bookings $25 and $15 child. School groups $10 with one teacher free for each 10 students. www.centralcoastimag.com.au

Amazement
Little Creek Cheese
The word is out on Amazement’s magical days out for families.
When locals are asked about Little Creek Cheese and what cheese they like best, most will state Little Creek Cheeses award winning BBQ Cheese (Haloumi) and the Awarded Garlic and Dill Salad Cheese (Fetta). But how many know of the latest cheese that they are producing?
We have hosted birthday parties, weddings and family get together. The grounds are looking better and better and 2 new mazes are in the planning. The café is making a name for itself as a gorgeous venue, serving scrumptious homemade food and is open to everyone Friday through Sunday from breakfast. What could be better than a delicious lunch sitting and chatting with friends in the sunshine on the café veranda, with peacocks, geese and ducks strolling by? Amazement will close to the public from December the 15th til Boxing Day, only opening for pre booked end of year functions. Our Christmas trees will be on sale for one day only on Saturday December 15th from 8am.
What is this new cheese? It’s a low salt, Spreadable Fetta that is available in two different flavours. One of the flavours is a straight Garlic Spreadable Marinated Fetta and the other is their Scarborough spreadable Marinated Fetta. What Flavour is the Scarborough? Believe it or not Russell and Sue came up with the flavour first and then the name just fitted. The herbs used are Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme. I am sure many will remember the song the name came from. These go wonderfully on to crackers or toast and can also compliment any salad but without the salty taste that Fettas are known for. Why make one with less salt? Really to just allow even more people to enjoy the tastes of handmade cheeses over the mass produced ones that you would buy in the supermarkets.
Gennie thanks the many friends of Amazement and her staff for supporting her this year.
Little Creek Cheese is located in the Wyong Milk Factory along Alison Rd, Wyong and their shop is open 10am till 4pm, 7 days a week for cheese tastings.

Spring has Sprung
Homewares Gifts Art Collectables
What a way to start spring, with the burst of fresh blossoms and renewed life in our gardens. My burst of renewed inspiration was winning an award in the Central Coast Business Women’s Connect Awards. I am the 2012 Winner of the Arts and Culture Award. In our busy schedules it is easy to get bogged down in the challenges that come our way; it is very humbling and rewarding to be acknowledged this way. Speaking of blossom trees, the children of Wyong Creek School have put a beautiful spring tree together, with an arrangement of very unique paper blossoms, to brighten up “The old delivery shed” at my shop, do come visit and see how delightful it is. The children have done a fantastic job. Well done. Fernbank Farm Fernbank Farm is a wonderful heritage property at Wyong Creek and has recently become available as a Farm Stay and boutique wedding venue. Built in 1904, Fernbank has been lovingly restored and has 4 double bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. Over the course of her 25 year ownership, Meg Gossert has tried to reinstate all of the original materials of the building. So much so, the home is considered one of the Central Coast's most treasured heritage assets. The property is set on 25 acres, 8 of which are beautiful gardens. The garden features a gorgeous rotunda by the lake, a lovely Somesby pebble area and hand-made iron gates to lead you along the hedged dam bank. Home of Central Coast Carriages and beautiful Santosa Clydesdale Stud, guests can enjoy a ride in the newly imported Landau Carriage. www.fernbankfarmstay.com

Charlie’s Cottage A Heritage Cottage with modern conveniences Circa 1900. Rustic, as of yesterday with modern conveniences. Timber and tin are a style of dwelling, distinctly “from here” built in mid 1800-1930’s and are something to behold. “Red roofed dots” on the scene, each glued to the scene, to these sheer hillsides, ram shackled, weatherboard , tongue and grooved houses, perched proudly on a hillside. This red roofed tenuous collage of disparate elements of wood and tin, concrete and iron, the chaos of strange legged houses built high to catch the cooling breezes or to evade flash floods, or the once in a hundred years of floodwater of the snake like Wyong Creek. Single skinned timber houses, bedecked by a wide return veranda to shade from the boiling sun in summer. The climate dictated the propped on stick ventilated & openness, to attract new settlers, here to log for cedar. 25 Ravensdale Rd., Ravensdale -Yarramalong Valley nfo 4356 1254 or gailbrigden@hotmail.com

Rule of Thirds By Justin Aveling Innocent Eyes Photography The “Rule of Thirds” is one of the very basic photographic principles used to compose a photograph. This grid identifies the ‘rule of thirds’ being, four important parts of a photo that you should consider placing points of interest in as you ‘frame’ your image. Not only this – but it also gives you four ‘lines’ that are also useful positions for elements in your photo. Studies have shown that when viewing images that people’s eyes usually go to one of the intersection points most naturally rather than the centre of the shot. In a similar way a good technique for landscape shots is to position horizons along one of the horizontal lines also as I’ve done with the following shot. I look forward to sharing more tips with you next month. Happy shooting! info@innocenteyesphotography.com www.innocenteyesphotography.com
Three Reasons to try a Segway Central Coast based tourist operator - Segway Central Coast (www.segwaycentralcoast.com.au) is all about offering their visitors an experience they’ll never forget! With summer on the way now’s the time to get outside and have some fun and here’s Segway Central Coast’s top three reasons to do just that! 1. It’s the family outing EVERYONE will want to go on! How many times have you had family get togethers where the conversation has struggled and you find yourself just plain bored?! Organise a family function that everyone will WANT to talk about for years to come! Segway Central Coast will cater for large groups so the whole family can enjoy the day. Make some exciting memories and imagine all the fabulous photo opportunities! 2. Add another “set of wheels” to your repertoire Our first “set of wheels” is usually in the form of a bike or trike. Then a skateboard, razor and ultimately a car; and perhaps a scooter or motorbike. Give a Segway a spin and enjoy the freedom that two wheels can give you. There’s no exhaust – so you can enjoy the fresh air at Segway Central Coast’s lush location at Mt. Penang Parklands – just 45 minutes from Sydney’s northern suburbs. 3. Anyone can ride a Segway How often have you wanted to get together with the kids and your friends and wanted to do something everyone could enjoy? Segway Central Coast is the perfect solution for everyone aged 9-89! The Segway’s are easy to operate and at all times a Segway Central Coast guide will be on hand if you need assistance. No longer will younger ones feel left out or parents sitting on the sidelines watching! It’s truly something you can learn and enjoy together.

The Carousel This historic icon has charmed and delighted young and old at The Entrance since 1930. It has seen a number of owners since its arrival in Australia from France in the early 1900s and is now part of the National Trust classified Haas Family carnival, a family that has 400 years of carnival ancestry. The carousel, which was built in the late 1800s in Germany, was originally ‘powered’ by a pony but was converted to steam at the turn of the century. It remained steam driven until the 1950s when an old chev. engine was installed, and was converted to electricity in the 1970s. Its reed pipe organ, operated by bellows, remained in commission until 1950. Music is now supplied by tape, although the organ front has been restored. The carousel has pride of place on The Entrance waterfront where it is visited by not only today’s children, but by the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents of those children.

Central Coast Singing Workshops 2012-2013 Central Coast Singing Workshops is a music project organised by three choral leaders: Jane Becktel, Barb Shearer-Jones and Kerryn Cooper, all of whom live in Empire Bay. Between them they direct half a dozen choirs on the Central Coast. The Singing Workshops received a Cultural and Community Grant from the City of Gosford to offer people of all levels of experience the chance to sing in massed singing lowcost workshops. They are led by both local and interstate community singing leaders. Many people love to sing, and the social and health benefits of singing together in large groups are well documented – but the Coast has a large population of busy people who do not have time to commit to joining a weekly choir. The very popular workshops have been filling this need for people to come together to learn, get to know each other and experience the exhilaration of singing together in harmony. More information is on our Facebook page. To be placed on an email list to receive workshop updates, please contact: Jane Becktel: jubilasingers@gmail.com, SMS/ring 0422 005 901 or 02 4339 1336 Kerryn Cooper: kerryn.cooper@gmail.com Barb Shearer-Jones: bjay@justknowledge.com.au

Seacoast Fishing The freshest seafood on the Coast...
Rockpool Retreat Visiting the Central Coast this weekend the best find was definitely the Rockpool Retreat. This busy cafe is in a divine location. We sat on the verandah and immediately noticed the blankets to cover your legs if you feel cold. The staff were caring too and the menu was very reasonable. There is a reason they are so busy. With an extensive menu our food was fresh, delicious beef wraps with salad and the best chips on the coast. The smell of good coffee was delicious whilst our iced coffees drew envious glances. Service is swift and a wonderful singer caroused us as we ate. I recommend this Cafe to anyone who wants to enjoy a leisurely Breakfast, lunch or brunch all of which are served up until 5pm everyday. There is live music on Sundays, a book club, and all sorts of community based activities along with fresh local produce. This Cafe is essential on your 'must do' list and I am sure once you have been it will be on your favourites list. 8 Bush Street Norah Head. 0243974859. Come and try our locally caught seafood. On Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays our boys Peter Mark and Blane, bring in their daily catch for Sue and staff to sell direct to the public. Snapper’ ocean jackets’ bream and trevally are plentiful, we also sell fresh local oysters and buy in Tasmanian and NZ salmon, ocean trout, and fresh crystal bay prawns or fresh tigers or kings (what ever is the best this week). Peter has been fishing for about 30 years and has plenty of experience, knowing where to place his traps, Mark is our youngest partner and is very knowledgeable also and Blane is our excellent deckey. Seacoast fishing moors their 16 mtr boat Spinnaway 11, from Pretty Beach wharf, where the boys can travel as far as 50 miles and find new territory, especially looking for Lobsters (season starts in Nov). Please call us anytime for updated catch info on: 43686160 Patanga Street, Kincumber
