Sight and sound warm the soul in July on the Central Coast No matter what type of music you’re into, there’s something for everyone at a diverse range of venues. Starting with Andre Rieu’s Hometown Concert being beamed direct via satellite into Avoca Beach Picture Theatre, next you can check out a huge array of artists at a range of local venues, including Lizottes Kincumber, Laycock Street Theatre and The Entrance Leagues Club. The Whitlams’ Tim Freedman and Split Enz’s Tim Finn both go solo early in the month, while WA rockers Karnivool come to town on Wednesday 11th. Beccy Cole, Wendy Matthews, Bruce Mathiske also drop by for a visit, and a range of exciting local productions come to life at Laycock Street and Peninsula Community Theatres. If you prefer sight to sound, then take your pick! Ongoing exhibitions feature at all our galleries around the Coast, with Gosford Regional Gallery (and the adjacent Japanese Gardens re-opening

on July 27th!), the Ken Duncan Gallery, Somersby Photographic Gallery and the wonderful enclave of Two Birds Gallery each offering something unique, stunning and breathtaking for you to take in. Out on the road, check out the Woy Woy Art Markets on Sunday 8th, while the 5 Lands Art Trail continues to grow in popularity, with open studios right around the region on the 14th & 15th of the month. July doesn’t pass without some great community events – on Sunday 1st celebrate the Whale Dreamers Festival at Norah Head Lighthouse, then the following Saturday 7th, the Food Fun and Music Festival takes over Toukley

with plenty of feasting options to be had. Speaking of food – don’t miss Bells at Killcare’s Cooking School, on monthly, with the July class set for Wednesday 4th July. Want to learn more? Gaining the edge Monthly iMag’s from your Website Big Birthday Bash New websites and upgrades to old websites. Local businesses are now competing in a global marketplace and now more than ever they must have a superior online website presence. It is not enough to simply have a website; it requires so much more than that. What the team at RCS Websites does is speak one on one with the business owner. We then take those requirements and convert then into a website that is appealing to the eye and can be found on the major search engines. Right at this very moment there are potential customers on the search engines looking for what your business has to sell, and without ranking prominently on the big search engines you are missing out on opportunity for a sale or a quote. RCS Websites have taken things a step further by also including social networking with Facebook integration. Facebook is a major force on the Internet and every business needs to have a piece of that opportunity in order to maintain a competitive edge. This is achieved by engaging consumers online. Companies who make the decision to work with RCS Websites can expect impressive results at a very affordable rate. We've built our business on providing “Simple yet cost effective Internet marketing solutions” that always produce results for our clients and the countless testimonials we've amassed over the years will attest to that fact. Little Creek Cheese wins silver awards Little Creek Cheese was thrilled to have found out they won two silver awards for their gourmet handmade cheese after only being in operation for 14 months. Little Creek Cheese is set up in the grounds of the Old Milk Factory in Wyong by the Parsons family, who turned their passion and hobby into a full time job. The 2012 DIAA Australian Dairy Product Competition results were only announced at the awards dinner in Melbourne on the 17th May 2012. The first of the awarded cheese was their BBQ Cheese, which is made in the style of a Haloumi but made out of Cows milk. The other awarded cheese was their Garlic and Dill Salad Cheese which is made in the style of a fetta. Again this cheese is made with Cow milk and not the traditional goat and sheep milk. Marinated in Canola oil, which is an excellent carrier for flavour, this is a perfect addition to salads, pizzas etc. The Factory is open 7 days a week, 10 am till 4 pm and everyone is welcome to come and have a free tasting and judge the quality for themselves.

Wyong Museum & Historical Society Snippets From History... 1886 The Victorian Government Gazette of May 28, contains interesting figures, published by the Government Statist (sic), in reference to the population of the different colonies up to the end of 1885. The population of Victoria is estimated at 961,869, or an increase of 90,593 over the previous year; New South Wales 930,573, an increase of 50,803; Queensland, 836,916, an increase of 17,003; South Australia 316,769, an increase of 6987. Grand total of all colonies, including New Zealand, 3,370,524, or an increase over the year 1884 of 107,483. 1894 The tremendous heat which prevailed last summer in the south of France induced an inventive genius in Bordeaux to provide his horses with straw hats, and the scheme proved so successful that very soon all the cab, ‘bus, and cart horses in the neighbourhood were rigged out with similar head-gear. The hat covers the eyes and forehead of the horse, whilst a couple of openings are left for the ears. At first the horses look very strange in their new rig-out, but one soon grows accustomed to the sight.

Charlie’s Cottage A Heritage Cottage with modern conveniences Circa 1900. Rustic, as of yesterday with modern conveniences. Timber and tin are a style of dwelling, distinctly “from here” built in mid 1800-1930’s and are something to behold. “Red roofed dots” on the scene, each glued to the scene, to these sheer hillsides, ram shackled, weatherboard , tongue and grooved houses, perched proudly on a hillside. This red roofed tenuous collage of disparate elements of wood and tin, concrete and iron, the chaos of strange legged houses built high to catch the cooling breezes or to evade flash floods, or the once in a hundred years of floodwater of the snake like Wyong Creek. Single skinned timber houses, bedecked by a wide return veranda to shade from the boiling sun in summer. The climate dictated the propped on stick ventilated & openness, to attract new settlers, here to log for cedar. 25 Ravensdale Rd., Ravensdale -Yarramalong Valley nfo 4356 1254 or gailbrigden@hotmail.com

Marine Rescue Annual Boat Raffle Winter is traditionally the ‘quiet’ time for recreational boating, so you would think it could be assumed that the volunteers from Marine Rescue Central Coast would also enjoy a break from their constant vigilance of the marine radio and their on-water rescue responsibilities. In fact, the winter period actually becomes busier because in addition to the ongoing radio and on-water duties the Central Coast volunteers use wintertime as their principal fundraising time. Commencing in June, the ‘boys (and girls) in blue’ will be seeking public support for their Annual Boat Raffle, their main fundraising activity that helps ensure that this life-saving volunteer organisation remains viable in the coming year. The prize this year is a 3.59m Stacer Proline hull designed for rivers, estuaries, creeks, dams and lakes, fitted with a 5HP Vortex outboard motor, lifejackets and other safety gear all on a registered genuine Stacer boat trailer. Tickets are only $2, and will be on sale from June. So when you see the Marine Rescue volunteers in your local shopping centre buy a ticket or two to help such a worthy group, it won’t break the bank and you may be the lucky winner.

It’s Crossroad’s Festival fifth birthday! The prestigious festival of classical music on the NSW Central Coast celebrates its fifth year in 2012! For the first time, we bring to Australia a prominent international artist, British violist Paul Silverthorne. Paul is a leading international figure in contemporary music, as Principal Viola of the London Symphony and London Sinfonietta. We are excited to join Paul with some of Australia’s leading classical musicians as well as the music community of the Central Coast. Opening the festival is a ravishing program of works for voice, viola and piano, culminating in the gorgeous classic written for this exotic trio combination, Brahms’ Two Songs Op. 91. Silverthorne will be joined by the acclaimed Australian pianist Phillip Shovk as well as rising star of Australian Opera, Victoria Lambourn. On the second Festival morning, I and my good friend Chris Pidcock are joined by New York-based Australian ex-pat violinist Asmira WoodwardPage for a magical all-Bach morning, which will be introduced by Silverthorne to tell the fascinating story behind the music (hint: it involves a Russian Count and a bad case of insomnia!). Back by popular demand is the astonishing young violin sensation Harry Ward, who amazed audiences last year with his depth of musicality and flawless technique.

Harry joins familiar friends to present the concert that I am most excited about - a heart-stopping program of music filled with powerful imagery and exhilarating joy, including this year’s world premiere: a new piece to match Bach’s Brandenburg 6 written by rising star of Australian composers, Londonbased Daniel McCallum. We are also proud to provide listeners with a ‘PreFestival Recital’, a chance to warm up the senses with some piano passion offered by the entrant declared ‘Best Australian Pianist’ for 2012. This concert will also feature famous violin works by Beethoven and Massanet. I am sure you will discover new favourites at this year’s Crossroads, and I, along with this year’s lineup of artists, can’t wait to share the joys of music with you all. 18-26 August Bookings phone 0437 399896 Brochure at www.asa.edu.au/crossroads Glen Donnelly, Artistic Director

This historic icon has charmed and delighted young and old at The Entrance since 1930. It has seen a number of owners since its arrival in Australia from France in the early 1900s and is now part of the National Trust classified Haas Family carnival, a family that has 400 years of carnival ancestry. The carousel, which was built in the late 1800s in Germany, was originally ‘powered’ by a pony but was converted to steam at the turn of the century. It remained steam driven until the 1950s when an old chev. engine was installed, and was converted to electricity in the 1970s. Its reed pipe organ, operated by bellows, remained in commission until 1950. Music is now supplied by tape, although the organ front has been restored. The carousel has pride of place on The Entrance waterfront where it is visited by not only today’s children, but by the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents of those children.

Bavarian Bakehaus

Follow the aroma of freshly baked bread down a cobble stone driveway leading into the Ettalong Market, and you’ll find the Bavarian Bakehaus. Owners Kath and Holger Blaschek are working hard to introduce their German sourdough breads to the public. The freshly baked goods fill their new, slick bakery, which is quickly transforming into a rustic café as word of their mouth-watering products, spreads. The excellent Di Stefano coffee, with its rich, silky, yet earthy roast, is served in quality, black ceramic cups and mugs so you can warm your hands on a cold winter’s day. Or if you are “on-the-run” take away cups and a crusty bread roll are the go. Sample the range of loaves and rolls which include Schwarzbrot, rye, chia, gluten-free plus get a real Bavarian pretzel! Those with a sweet tooth can go straight to the freshly baked, flaky Danish pastries filled with apple, cherry and apricot or try the croissants with their rich buttery taste. The Bavarian-themed Bakery/Café is both a home away from home for those from Europe and popular by locals. Last’s years Oktoberfest was successful and plans to expand the event to give you more of a taste of German culture are underway. Drop in for the details – remember follow your nose! The Little Frog (with the big heart) 66 Pacific Highway, Wyong.

When my friends said they were taking me to a Restaurant that had big fat German sausages such as I have been mouth-watering for and this was served with sauerkraut and Bratkartoffeln, I didn’t get too excited as I have been disappointed so many times before. You can’t imagine my surprise when this was the genuine thing, real German sausages. If you are a lover of German food I can recommend that you will be satisfied when you visit the Austrian Schnitzelhaus because they specialise in the real meal. Next time I had to have the roasted Pork Knuckle, be very hungry when you order this as it is HUGE and very, very good. There is nothing better on a cold winters night than a hot Gluehwein or 2. So please turn to page 2 and see the latest Winter special to tempt your taste buds and priced at a very affordable $29.90 now you pay more than that for most mains and still leave hungry. Not here bring your appetite with you and join us for some ooompapa. The Hive, Erina Fair 02 4367 4874 www.austrianschnitzelhaus.com.au

Tasting on the Coast

Austrian Schnitzelhaus

I love to find new dining experiences that are so special I have to tell everyone. The Little Frog in Wyong is one of those. The restaurant is opposite the railway station for those of us (retirees) lucky enough to enjoy railway adventures. Lunch Special - it sure is. We could choose from the main menu, dearest main course $19.00 or the lunchtime special - who could resist - 2 courses for $15 or 3 courses for $18. Our friends had mains - Emma had the vegetarian platter, Klara the Steak Dianne with creamy mushroom sauce which she declared she could have chewed without teeth it was so tender. My husband and I had the 3 course special. My tomato and fennel soup was delicious, followed by Steak with pomme frites and green salad and gelato (3 flavours), my husband had French Onion Soup, Chicken with red wine jus, pomme frites, green salad and Crepes Suzette for sweets. All our meals were delicious. The specials were small, succulent and with 3 courses made a large meal. For small appetites 2 course special would be plenty and we are already planning our next visit. Maybe for the new Sunday buffet breakfast in June? I'm not sure I can wait that long. Dinner at night - A la carte menu. This is a truly special restaurant, the chef is planning all sorts of special events (see p.11 Imag) . There is a midweek dinner special coming up as well. Check www.thelittlefrog.com.au and don't miss out. Carolyn Sinclair – Chef/Owner (retired) Old Courthouse Restaurant, Minmi.

Seacoast Fishing What's happening this month... Our commercial fishing business has been operating from Kincumber for the past 8 years and we have the freshest fish in town. Straight from the boat to our shop, which is located 400mtrs from the scenic road roundabout towards Macmasters Beach. Our catch consists of Snapper, Ocean Jackets, Bream trevally, mullet (which is the catch of the month!) and Lobsters. We also have local Oysters, school prawns and a variety of frozen products. As our weather cools and the westly winds start, mullet season begins for us April and May, this happens each year when the mullet schools up in big patches coming out of our estuaries and they travel to the sea, this is where our licensed boys use the hauling nets to catch some, most of the mullet schools head straight out to sea, but some travel along the coastline for a while, these are the fish the boys try to catch. Mullet has the best omega 3 oil content, which is so good for us, flavour is strong, but a great fish to eat (our favourite). Fresh is Best! Open Thursday & Friday 12.30 to 6pm and Saturday 9 to 6pm. Please call for updated catch info 43686160 Patanga Street, Kincumber
