Sight and sound warm the soul in July on the Central Coast No matter what type of music you’re into, there’s something for everyone at a diverse range of venues.

Yarramalong Winter Art Show Saturday/Sunday, August 4/5 The first weekend in August is a great time to take a drive into the glorious hinterland of Yarramalong Valley and visit the Yarramalong Art Show, which this year features the works of no less than nine prominent artists and sculptors including Greg Hyde, Noeline Millar, John Wright, Belinda Lindhardt and Danielle Morrison.

The Yarramalong district has long been an inspiration to artists with many choosing to live in the region.

Represented at the show from among these will be works by two distinguished botanical artists, Tanya Hoolihan (illustration) and Marion Farley, sculptor Nardja Williams and glass artist Alison Mortiss, winner of the 2012 RAS Award of Excellence for best exhibit over all glass classes.

The exhibition runs between 10am and 4pm and admission is $5, which includes a complimentary glass of wine and cheese. Proceeds benefit Yarramalong Hall.

Little Creek Cheese wins silver awards Little Creek Cheese was thrilled to have found out they won two silver awards for their gourmet handmade cheese after only being in operation for 14 months. Little Creek Cheese is set up in the grounds of the Old Milk Factory in Wyong by the Parsons family, who turned their passion and hobby into a full time job.

The 2012 DIAA Australian Dairy Product Competition results were only announced at the awards dinner in Melbourne on the 17th May 2012.

The first of the awarded cheese was their BBQ Cheese, which is made in the style of a Haloumi but made out of Cows milk.

The other awarded cheese was their Garlic and Dill Salad Cheese which is made in the style of a fetta.

Again this cheese is made with Cow milk and not the traditional goat and sheep milk. Marinated in Canola oil, which is an excellent carrier for flavour, this is a perfect addition to salads, pizzas etc.

The Factory is open 7 days a week, 10 am till 4 pm and everyone is welcome to come and have a free tasting and judge the quality for themselves.

1886 The Victorian Government Gazette of May 28, contains interesting figures, published by the Government Statist (sic), in reference to the population of the different colonies up to the end of 1885. The population of Victoria is estimated at 961,869, or an increase of 90,593 over the previous year; New South Wales 930,573, an increase of 50,803; Queensland, 836,916, an increase of 17,003; South Australia 316,769, an increase of 6987. Grand total of all colonies, including New Zealand, 3,370,524, or an increase over the year 1884 of 107,483.

1894 The tremendous heat which prevailed last summer in the south of France induced an inventive genius in Bordeaux to provide his horses with straw hats, and the scheme proved so successful that very soon all the cab, ‘bus, and cart horses in the neighbourhood were rigged out with similar head-gear.

The hat covers the eyes and forehead of the horse, whilst a couple of openings are left for the ears. At first the horses look very strange in their new rig-out, but one soon grows accustomed to the sight.

Marine Rescue Annual Boat Raffle Winter is traditionally the ‘quiet’ time for recreational boating, so you would think it could be assumed that the volunteers from Marine Rescue Central Coast would also enjoy a break from their constant vigilance of the marine radio and their on-water rescue responsibilities.

In fact, the winter period actually becomes busier because in addition to the ongoing radio and on-water duties the Central Coast volunteers use wintertime as their principal fundraising time. Commencing in June, the ‘boys (and girls) in blue’ will be seeking public support for their Annual Boat Raffle, their main fundraising activity that helps ensure that this life-saving volunteer organisation remains viable in the coming year.

The prize this year is a 3.59m Stacer Proline hull designed for rivers, estuaries, creeks, dams and lakes, fitted with a 5HP Vortex outboard motor, lifejackets and other safety gear all on a registered genuine Stacer boat trailer.

Tickets are only $2, and will be on sale from June.

So when you see the Marine Rescue volunteers in your local shopping centre buy a ticket or two to help such a worthy group, it won’t break the bank and you may be the lucky winner.

It’s Crossroad’s Festival fifth birthday!

The prestigious festival of classical music on the NSW Central Coast celebrates its fifth year in 2012!

For the first time, we bring to Australia a prominent international artist, British violist Paul Silverthorne. Paul is a leading international figure in contemporary music, as Principal Viola of the London Symphony and London Sinfonietta. We are excited to join Paul with some of Australia’s leading classical musicians as well as the music community of the Central Coast.

Opening the festival is a ravishing program of works for voice, viola and piano, culminating in the gorgeous classic written for this exotic trio combination, Brahms’ Two Songs Op. 91. Silverthorne will be joined by the acclaimed Australian pianist Phillip Shovk as well as rising star of Australian Opera, Victoria Lambourn.

On the second Festival morning, I and my good friend Chris Pidcock are joined by New York-based Australian ex-pat violinist Asmira WoodwardPage for a magical all-Bach morning, which will be introduced by Silverthorne to tell the fascinating story behind the music (hint: it involves a Russian Count and a bad case of insomnia!).

Back by popular demand is the astonishing young violin sensation Harry Ward, who amazed audiences last year with his depth of musicality and flawless technique.

Tracey Moffatt: Narratives A Monash Gallery of Art Travelling Exhibition Gallery Two: Until 15 July Tracey Moffatt: Narratives features three important photographic series by the internationally-recognised Australian photographer Tracey Moffatt that each engage in story telling.

The Residency will take place from 18 June to 29 June 2012 and an exhibition of selected work will be shown at Gosford Regional Gallery from 21 July to 16 September 2012 The 2012 Gosford Artist Residency is part of an ongoing strategy to engage the local community with quality contemporary art and revitalise the CBD of Gosford.

Four contemporary artists have been selected for the 2012 Gosford Artist Residency: Wendy Abel Campbell, Kath Fries, Kylie Rose McLean and Janet Meaney. They will be based in shop 153/154, The Imperial Centre, Gosford from 18 to 29 June 2012.

Each artist will interpret and respond to the Gosford CBD its people, places, past, present and future, working from the shop and in the public domain.

Reconciliation Gallery One: Until 15 July This annual event provides an opportunity for the local Aboriginal community to showcase work and continues to work towards reconciliation within the community.

The TOUKLEY and DISTRICTS ART SOCIETY, in its home at the Federation Gallery and Information Centre, Wallarah Park, Wallarah Rd, Gorokan, just before the Toukley Bridge, is the showcase for the Wyong Shire art scene. The Society’s 115 members are all residents of the Central Coast.

On display at the gallery are paintings in oil, acrylics, watercolour and pastel, along with hand-painted porcelain, hand-painted silk, craftwork, jewellery and original cards which are all for sale.

A workshop by Donna Gilbertson will be held on Monday July 3 from 9:30am to 3:30pm.

Peter Tassell runs a painting class every Wednesday morning, 9am to 12pm, for the price of $5. All are welcome.

Open Tuesday to Friday 10am to 4pm, Saturday and Sunday 10am to 1pm. The entry is free, a donation is welcome.

Food, Fun & Music Festival in Toukley The Annual Food, Fun & Music Festival is on again and will be held in the Village Green, Toukley on Saturday 7th July, 2012 from 11am.

This historic icon has charmed and delighted young and old at The Entrance since 1930.

It has seen a number of owners since its arrival in Australia from France in the early 1900s and is now part of the National Trust classified Haas Family carnival, a family that has 400 years of carnival ancestry.

The carousel, which was built in the late 1800s in Germany, was originally ‘powered’ by a pony but was converted to steam at the turn of the century. It remained steam driven until the 1950s when an old chev. engine was installed, and was converted to electricity in the 1970s. Its reed pipe organ, operated by bellows, remained in commission until 1950. Music is now supplied by tape, although the organ front has been restored.

The carousel has pride of place on The Entrance waterfront where it is visited by not only today’s children, but by the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents of those children.

When my friends said they were taking me to a Restaurant that had big fat German sausages such as I have been mouth-watering for and this was served with sauerkraut and Bratkartoffeln, I didn’t get too excited as I have been disappointed so many times before. I love to find new dining experiences that are so special I have to tell everyone. The Little Frog in Wyong is one of those. The restaurant is opposite the railway station for those of us (retirees) lucky enough to enjoy railway adventures.

Lunch Special - it sure is. We could choose from the main menu, dearest main course $19.00 or the lunchtime special - who could resist - 2 courses for $15 or 3 courses for $18.

Our friends had mains - Emma had the vegetarian platter, Klara the Steak Dianne with creamy mushroom sauce which she declared she could have chewed without teeth it was so tender.

My husband and I had the 3 course special.

My tomato and fennel soup was delicious, followed by Steak with pomme frites and green salad and gelato (3 flavours), my husband had French Onion Soup, Chicken with red wine jus, pomme frites, green salad and Crepes Suzette for sweets. All our meals were delicious. The specials were small, succulent and with 3 courses made a large meal. For small appetites 2 course special would be plenty and we are already planning our next visit. Maybe for the new Sunday buffet breakfast in June? I'm not sure I can wait that long.

Seacoast Fishing What's happening this month...

Our commercial fishing business has been operating from Kincumber for the past 8 years and we have the freshest fish in town. Straight from the boat to our shop, which is located 400mtrs from the scenic road roundabout towards Macmasters Beach.

Our catch consists of Snapper, Ocean Jackets, Bream trevally, mullet (which is the catch of the month!) and Lobsters. We also have local Oysters, school prawns and a variety of frozen products.

As our weather cools and the westly winds start, mullet season begins for us April and May, this happens each year when the mullet schools up in big patches coming out of our estuaries and they travel to the sea, this is where our licensed boys use the hauling nets to catch some, most of the mullet schools head straight out to sea, but some travel along the coastline for a while, these are the fish the boys try to catch.

Mullet has the best omega 3 oil content, which is so good for us, flavour is strong, but a great fish to eat (our favourite). Fresh is Best!

Aberdeen Highland Games The Aberdeen Highland Games takes place on the first weekend in July each year and it is the final event of Scottish Australia Heritage Councils Heritage Week.

During the day more than twenty three events take place with stalls providing food and Celtic displays all of which represent traditional Celtic culture and recreation. The Games are a gathering together from Sydney and regional NSW of bands, Clans, dancers, heavy events and State and interstate tug of war teams to celebrate the Celtic history of the Upper Hunter.

The Aberdeen Highland Games starts with the Grand Parade of massed bands and Clans at 9.30am. The Event usually hosts 12 pipe bands and up to 18 Clans making the Opening Ceremony a spectacular and colourful sight.Encircle the ground offering a wide variety of wares, many of a Celtic theme. A wide variety of food, including haggis, is available at the Food Court. The day concludes with a ceilidh in the evening, this is a ticketed event and very popular with visitors.

The Aberdeen Highland Games is a great day of entertainment and gives visitors the opportunity for one or two nights stay, (even more if so desired) in the Upper Hunter. There is much to see and plenty of accommodation available.
