March Welcome to the Central Coast in March! With March comes a gentle cooling of temperatures on the Coast. But as the weather cools the Coast revs up for some top quality entertainment and cultural events. We have some wonderful Artists on the Coast and they are working very hard to bring you some exciting exhibitions, craft sales and amazing photography. Enjoy finding something interesting to do as you read through this issue of iMag. We must also congratulate one of our young thespians for winning the role of PUGSLY in THE ADDAMS FAMILY stage show. Liam Faulkner-Dimond is all of 12yrs old and is one of 5 boys playing this role. He lives at Chittaway Bay and his wonderful Mum created Billie Goat Soap. (I have several friends that are very grateful to her for that). Do go to the Capitol Theatre to cheer him on. See p26 for more information.

Contents day to spend on our waters. Something you should all try if you can. It is very safe and very comfortable as they have a loo on board and are Pet friendly. I want to say thank you to the readers that take the time to tell me how much they love our iMag. This is so encouraging as we always like to know if we are doing it right. When you visit any of the advertisers in iMag please let them know how you found them and how much you enjoy reading iMag. Till next month stay well and enjoy the Coast.

I took some friends out on an Andersons BBQ Boat, you can read about that on page 10. We are so looking forward to our next trip and already have 9 very keen friends ready to go. This is such a fantastic

Central Coast... A sporting mecca!

Bluetongue Stadium was recently voted as the favourite rugby league ground in Australia in the 2012 Rugby League Week Fans’ Poll – so get to these games and find out what all the fuss is about!

Whether it’s football, rugby league or any range of sports that catch your interest, the Central Coast is the place to be in March. The region’s only professional national sporting team, the Central Coast Mariners, have spent much of the current 2012/13 Hyundai A-League football season atop the competition table and will host three crucial home games this month at their bayside home ground of Bluetongue Stadium in Gosford. Get to a game – on Saturday 2nd (vs Western Sydney), Sunday 17th (vs Brisbane) and Saturday 30th (Melbourne Heart) – all three are set to be must-see football as the club fights to retain the Premier’s Plate it earned last season. Two “Community Spirit” events have been organised in conjunction with these fixtures, with the Western Sydney and Melbourne Heart matches to feature celebrations and entertainment in Gosford’s nearby Kibble Park. Central Coast NRL fans don’t miss out either – two feature NRL matches come to Bluetongue Stadium in March, with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs hosting the North Queensland Cowboys in Round 1 on Saturday March 9, while the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles will play the Wests Tigers on Thursday 28 March, a perfect lead-in to the Easter weekend.

Community festivals add colour to the Coast this month – starting with the Easy Street Hot Rods Show & Shine at Toukley on March 3. The Avoca Beach Picture Theatre hosts the Coasties Film Festival on Friday March 15, while the Ettalong Beach (Friday 15th – Sunday 17th) and Kariong (Sunday 17th) communities celebrate with local festivals. Music buffs will have choice in March too – the annual Central Coast Country Music Festival takes over The Entrance and nearby venues from Friday 8th to Sunday 10th March, with crowds sure to flock to the area. Pearl Beach’s Opera in the Arboretum is another key feature in the region’s event calendar and features amazing local and international opera talent. It will take place on Saturday March 23.

Marine Rescue A Boating Licence in One Day from Marine Rescue Central Coast Marine Rescue Central Coast has introduced a new service to enable applicants to complete all requirements for a Boating Driver’s Licence in one day. The new Practical Experience Course, the Boating Safety Course and the Boating Driver’s Test may be completed sequentially at the Point Clare Base. For many years, Marine Rescue Central Coast has provided the compulsory Boating Safety Course that is the precursor to a General Boat Drivers Licence Test. Marine Rescue is also authorised by Roads and Maritime Services to conduct monthly Boating Driver’s Licence Tests and these services will continue. Since 2009, those wishing to obtain a Boat Driver’s Licence must also complete a practical experience Log Book. The Marine Rescue Central Coast Practical Course will enable the assessor to issue a Certificate of Completion on conclusion of the ‘on water’ course enabling issue of the licence by Roads and Maritime. A fee of $170 will apply, plus the usual cost of the Safety Course and Boat Licence test, $45, making a total of $215 to get all licence procedures completed in one day. Bookings may be made with Marine Rescue Central Coast at its Point Clare Base or by phone on 4325 7929. Our commercial fishing business has been operating from Kincumber for the past 8 years and we have the freshest fish in town, straight from the boat to our shop, which is located 400mtrs from the scenic road roundabout towards Macmasters Beach. Our catch consists of Snapper, Ocean Jackets, Bream trevally, mullet (which is the catch of the month!) and Lobsters. We also have local Oysters, school prawns and a variety of frozen products. As our weather cools and the westly winds start, mullet season begins for us April and May, this happens each year when the mullet schools up in big patches coming out of our estuaries and they travel to the sea, this is where our licensed boys use the hauling nets to catch some, most of the mullet schools head straight out to sea, but some travel along the coastline for a while, these are the fish the boys try to catch. Mullet has the best omega 3 oil content, which is so good for us, flavour is strong, but a great fish to eat(our favourite) . Fresh is Best! We are open thurs, fridays 11am to 6pm and saturday 9am to 6pm. More info on: 43686160 Patanga Street, Kincumber

Having started this as a family hobby, they hope that other families will be interested in taking up cheese making as a family hobby as well. What better reward for a day’s work than some delicious cheese. Sue said “We always have people asking us how we make cheese, so the next step was to open the doors and teach people how to make it, with a hands on lesson, rather than just a verbal answer”. The response has been great and anyone interested in attending a class can contact Little Creek Cheese direct for more details and dates on classes. Have you ever wondered about the history of chocolate? If you have, these words might evoke the images of stone altars and the dark powder of ground cocoa beans, surrounded by proud Mayan chiefs who revered cocoa as ‘the drink of the gods’. But how did the esteemed cocoa change thus to the chocolate we know today? The answer can be found in the story of European chocolate; for in the tapestry of family recipes, of rivalries, and of the aristocracy lay the tale of artisan chocolate and of Belgian chocolatiers. And it is this story we wish to bring to you.

The store is open 7 days a week, excluding Good Friday and Christmas day. Opening hours are Tuesday 9am – 12pm, Wednesday to Monday 8am – 5pm.

Through combining classic recipes and premium Belgian couverture with the freshest local and imported ingredients, we aim to give you a taste of past luxury, where every piece is a work of art.

Sculpture in the Greens A new egalitarian model, exhibiting contemporary outdoor sculpture held at Kooindah Waters Golf and Spa Resort, Wyong during April and May 2013. GALA OPENING NIGHT 5.00PM 5 APRIL 2013, with entertainment, wine tasting and a great party atmosphere. ‘Sculpture on the Greens’ subscribes to the belief that Art should be considered an opportunity for expression, rather than a subjective competition. NEWS ABOUT THE EXHIBITION The entries have been selected with a very high caliber, pointing towards an interesting, contemporary exhibition with a diverse and eclectic range of sculptures assembled for the exhibition. The exhibition is not a competition, as art is a subjective and personal expression of ones passion. With this in mind, 6 high profile selectors from different backgrounds in sculpture will be chosen to recommend the major stipends. The adjudicators will not know who else is recommending the stipends and can only make their preferences known. This will level the playing field and reduce subjectivity. LEGENDS OF SCULPTURE Three high profile and world renowned Australian Sculptors are supporting the event – see our web site for more details. MENTORSHIP A young talented Torrens Straight Islander, James Roger, has been selected for mentoring by the team. His commitment will be to create a work that talks in the ‘Language of Sculpture’ - an international language – and uses as his reference, his heritage and culture in a contemporary way. His studies have already given him a good grounding, and this mentorship will encourage his growth as a sculptor, and expose him to the realities of working in a pubic domain, with a team dedicated to high quality and aesthetic principles. INVOLVING THE COMMUNITY Plans are underfoot to visit 5 Primary Schools in the Wyong area to take Sculpture on the Greens to the students and involve the classes with a lesson on drawing in 3D. Any schools who would like to take advantage of this innovation, please contact Col Henry. SCULPTURE WORKSHOPS As part of the Sculpture on the Greens exhibition, at least 2 x two day workshops will be run to introduce sculpture to the community, culminating with each ‘student’ designing, developing and physically making a sculpture during the workshops held at Col Henrys Studio, near Wyong. Costs and dates will be advertised, or contact Col to book early. DONATIONS Please support this innovative and bold initiative by becoming a ‘Proud Sponsor’. All donations ensure you are in the running for a prize, you can vote for the Peoples Choice, and will receive 5 Newsletters about the Artists, and their work, interesting articles about contemporary sculpture, and more. VOLUNTEERS We are looking for volunteers, who are interested in helping with the event, and becoming one of the ‘family’. If you have a special skill, our just enjoying meeting interesting and new people, join the team by contacting us. An event like this needs many layers of expertise, and we are very interested in involving the community to create an exhibition owned by the Central Coast. For more information contact Col Henry 0448512788 or email sculptureonthegreens@gmail.com See our 'Proud Sponsors' at www.sculptureonthegreens.net .au Front cover image 'Eureka' by Vikki Holik-Blazley (Wind-Wood sculpture 2m long)

www.centralcoastimag.com.au supported us; many of whom have become very good friends. Christmas stocks came in early this year and have brought forth a steady stream of compliments. Our extended range of hand-made glass is stunning. Besides vases and bowls the glass masters have ventured into sculptural pieces this year. They are quite lyrical and reasonably priced. We have an entirely new range of plates, platters and candle holders in unusual colours and have already had to send for more stock. The whimsical metal range for ’nuts and bolts’ sports figures have been augmented with a number of motor bikes. So clever and so attractive, there‘s nothing quite like a Harley! So do drop in to Toowoon Bay Gallery and see the vast and varied items we are showing this year. The Carousel This historic icon has charmed and delighted young and old at The Entrance since 1930. It has seen a number of owners since its arrival in Australia from France in the early 1900s and is now part of the National Trust classified Haas Family carnival, a family that has 400 years of carnival ancestry. The carousel, which was built in the late 1800s in Germany, was originally ‘powered’ by a pony but was converted to steam at the turn of the century. It remained steam driven until the 1950s when an old chev. engine was installed, and was converted to electricity in the 1970s. Its reed pipe organ, operated by bellows, remained in commission until 1950. Music is now supplied by tape, although the organ front has been restored. The carousel has pride of place on The Entrance waterfront where it is visited by not only today’s children, but by the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents of those children.

Christo: John Kaldor Family Collection Artist Room 2 February to 1 April This touring exhibition is comprised of works from The Kaldor Collection. For more than 50 years, John Kaldor has been a passionate collector of international contemporary art, developing lasting relationships with some of the most important artists of our time. Recently gifted to the Art Gallery of NSW, the John Kaldor Family Collection comprises over 200 works, including in-depth representation of Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Jeff Koons, Sol LeWitt, Robert Rauschenberg and Ugo Rondinone. In 1967 John Kaldor met Christo and JeanneClaude, and was instrumental in securing the site for their Wrapped Coast project.

Christo – Wrapped Book Modern Art, 1978, polyethylene, twine, book, edition 71/120, John Kaldor Family Collection at the Art Gallery of New South Wales © Christo

Christo (1935 - ) and Jeanne-Claude (1935 – 2009) were a married couple who created iconic environmental works of art. In 1967, Christo had already made his first drawings for a wrapped coastline, initially planned for California as a ‘packed coast’. The following year, Christo and Jeanne-Claude welcomed the young Australian collector John Kaldor to their home in New York. Kaldor invited them to Australia as part of the AlcorsoSekers Travelling Scholarship and it became the first visit to Australia for international artists to make new work and the first in the series of Kaldor Public Art Projects. Kaldor secured a site 14.5 kilometres south-east of the city centre at Little Bay and a team of more than 100 workers and 11 volunteers

spent four weeks climbing, wrapping, sewing and securing the work in an atmosphere of camaraderie that defined the mood and memory of the experience. Somewhere between a monument and an event, Wrapped Coast was an extraordinary project that changed perceptions and had an enormous impact on art in Australia.

PerspectiveS Gallery Two: 2 February to 1 April Perspectives is a touring exhibition from the Australian War Memorial. Perspectives presents the unique insights of two contemporary artists responding to the subject of peacekeeping. As official artists commissioned by the Australian War Memorial, Jon Cattapan travelled to Timor–Leste in July 2008 and eX de Medici went to the Solomon Islands in March 2009. Both artists gained insight into the role of Australian peacekeepers and from these experiences, created a series of works that reveal a personal vision and artistic style. Jon Cattapan: Cattapan’s paintings and drawings deal with universal themes concerning how people interact and communicate with each other, all the while playing with our everyday notions of space and time. Cattapan makes his works specific to his deployment, interspersing them with depictions of Australian peacekeepers and Timorese people, topographical and night-time landscapes, and the daily activities of the Australian Defence Force (ADF). eX de Medici: De Medici’s series of watercolours and pen and ink drawings highlights the complexity of peacekeeping operations. She is concerned with showing the daytoday work of the ADF in the Solomon Islands, however, she has also placed the ADF within the broader context of the Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands (RAMSI). The artist explores the legacy of colonisation and questions the effects of foreign exploitation of natural resources on national sovereignty. A Central Vision 15 February to 13 March A Central Vision is an annual element of the Gallery’s exhibition program celebrating the achievements of Central Coast Secondary Public Schools within the Visual Arts arena. In 2013 over 70 students were selected from 300 entries from the 17 participating high schools from across the Central Coast.

After being raised on a family farm growing naturally and caring for the land, Bill developed a love for nature and natural healing. After seeing children being told they could not eat fresh fruit without bringing on asthma attacks or hyperactivity, Bill asked “WHY?” To get answers, he sent the worst trigger – a red apple, to be tested at the Agriculture Department and the University of Sydney. The tests found seventeen (17) introduced chemicals and fourteen (14) after the skin was peeled. After a large range of fruit and vegetables tested for chemical residue, with alarming results, he opened a fruit and vegetable shop in Wyong, specializing in only naturally grown foods. After many years “organic” was recognised and an official certification system was put in place. Central Coast Organics became the first fruit and vegetable farm to be certified organic with Biological Farmers of Australia. His interest in the land and natural healing lead me to do extensive research into natural remedies and eatable weeds (such as nettle) with healing properties.

The Addams Family Australian Premiere Saturday 23 March THE ADDAMS FAMILY features an original story and it's every father’s nightmare. Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family. A man her parents have never met. And if that weren't upsetting enough, she confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now, Gomez Addams must do something he's never done before - keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday's "normal" boyfriend and his parents. In a prolific career spanning six decades, Charles Addams created several thousand cartoons, sketches and drawings, many of which were published in The New Yorker. But it was his creation of characters that came to be known as The Addams Family that brought Addams his greatest acclaim. With a unique style that combined the twisted, macabre and just plain weird with charm, wit and enchantment, Addams’ drawings have entertained millions worldwide and served as the inspiration for multiple television series and motion pictures.

Headlining Womadelaide and performing in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Listening to Illapu’s songs is like hearing the whisper of the wind from the Andes…as they create music with songs about love, life, justice and social issues…. ILLAPU was founded in 1971 by four brothers from Antofagasta in northern Chile. As freedom advocates from Chile they became well-known for their cultivated rendering of Andean folklore and Bolivian rhythms, a fusion that later developed into the Nueva Canción movement. ILLAPU fuses their Andean roots with elements of improvisational jazz, the harmonic constructions and counterpoints of classical music, and the syncopation and polyrhythm’s of AfroCaribbean music, all combined with the terrestrial force of rock music. From the beginning, ILLAPU has sung to the emerging and urgent problems of Chile, Latin America and humanity. Their lyrics talk about daily life, justice, the preservation of ancient Latin American culture, the contradictions between human beings and nature, and the tensions created in the process of modernization. In 1976 they released what was to become a huge radio hit in both Argentina and Chile, and subsequently rose to fame for their guitar-based songs featuring strong vocals, pan flutes and enrapturing rhythms. Following a tour of Europe in 1981, they were denied re-entry into Chile, which at the time was under the dominance of the Pinochet dictatorship. Forced into exile, they lived in France and Mexico until the political climate in Chile changed. The group was cheered by throngs of fans upon their return home in 1988. Hi Tide Cafe Hi Tide Cafe is an icon in Avoca Beach. It was established many years ago and still remains very popular amongst locals and tourists alike. Julie and Trevor bought the business in July 2012 and have kept the menu the same except for the introduction of roast chickens which are proving to be very popular. This, along with their great coffee (arguably the best in Avoca Beach), fantastic wraps, burgers and fish and chips, as well as fresh juices, smoothies and milkshakes makes Hi Tide Cafe the one stop shop for breakfast and lunch and anything inbetween!
