Global Creatures presents

Baz Luhrmann’s Strictly Ballroom the Musical Directed by Baz Luhrmann Global Premiere Sydney Lyric from 25 March, 2014 STRICTLY BALLROOM THE MUSICAL will tango, sashay and bogo pogo its way onto the Sydney Lyric Theatre stage from 12 April 2014 thanks to the original creative team behind the classic 1992 film, including director and co-writer Baz Luhrmann, set and costume designer Catherine Martin, choreographer John “Cha Cha” O’Connell and cowriter Craig Pearce. STRICTLY BALLROOM THE MUSICAL is the inspiring story of a championship ballroom dancer who defies all the rules to follow his heart. This uplifting and courageous tale originated as a stage play that Baz Luhrmann devised with a group of students at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) back in 1984. Strictly Ballroom the movie went on to become one of the most successful Australian films of all time, earning more than $80 million at the box office. In this brand new theatrical production, STRICTLY BALLROOM THE MUSICAL will bring this iconic story to life on stage. It will feature break-into-song numbers created from original classics from the film, Love is in the Air, Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps, and Time After Time as well as newly composed songs. www.strictlyballroomthemusical.com 4

OPERA IN THE ARBORETUM Pearl Beach – 29 March If you think that our last opera was excellent, wait and see what we have lined up for next year. After being unavailable the last time, Opera Australia has released the wonderful baritone José Carbó. José, who is currently performing in La Traviata at the Opera House, will be topping the bill. He is among Australia’s top baritones and has some great arias planned to perform for you. Soprano Jacqueline Marbardi, who this year had the title role in Tosca and will sing Amelia in Un ballo in maschera in Melbourne, will sing for the first time in the Arboretum, as will Soprano Taryn Fiebig. Taryn has performed in Los Angeles and in London. This year she will sing Musetta (La Bohème), Oscar (Un ballo in maschera) and The Woodbird (Der Ring des Nibelungen) for Opera Australia. Henry Choo, one of Australia’s finest lyric tenors will complete the line-up of performers. Henry has recently sung in The Pearlfishers and The Merry Widow for Opera Australia. He has also appeared in Handel’s Messiah in Queenstown. The ever popular Jem Harding will entertain you on the piano plus guest artist for 2014, classical guitarist Giuseppe Zangari and the event would not be the same if we did not have those super young musicians, The Central Coast Chamber Orchestra performing for us under the baton of Patrick Brennan. (See ad for booking/ticket details) This is a charity event where money raised will go to Rotary’s Polio Eradication Program, needy organizations & other rotary projects.

Welcome to the Central Coast in autumn

MARCH/APRIL

From the Editor As it always is a very special time on the Coast we have made it easier for you to take your iMag with you or download it. Now you will be able to find that special place or thing you want to do a whole lot quicker. I have so many wonderful delights for you to sample; firstly we congratulate Little Creek Cheese for winning more GOLD at the Sydney Royal 2014. I am so in love with the Cheese made by this wonderful family, especially their new Block Cheddars. Chilli and the Onion are my favourite, you have to go and try the whole range to choose yours. While you are at The Dairy visiting Little Creek Cheese call in to the new Luka Chocolateria, the Coffee is worth the trip and offcourse so is the Chocolate, the best handmade chocolate you will

find. The Factory has a viewing window so you can watch it being made; certainly you will get no fresher delights than this. Opera in The Arboretum at Pearl Beach is here again on the 29th March, see page 5 for details. A wonderful day listening to great music in a beautiful bush setting with friends should be enjoyed by all. Get there nice and early, take a chair, bottle of good wine and a picnic. You will then join us for years. Promise, you will love it. Spent a lovely Saturday at Avoca, saw a film at the Cinema and then lunch at CafĂŠ Camino. If you are a lover of PORK RIBS this is where you need to come. Cooked slowly for 6 hours, the meat separates from the bone with ease. Absolutely delicious. As are the potatoes with the garlic tomato sauce. We shared as it is a BIG serve. I must wish you a very happy March and a very happy Easter. Enjoy looking through your new iMag and please let our advertisers know where you found them.

Creating the perfect chocolate... Visit The Luka Chocolate Factory and Chocolateria at the Wyong Milk Factory newly opened in February and take this opportunity to see how premium quality handcrafted chocolate is made. Luka handcrafted chocolate is made from fresh chocolate and all chocolate products sold at the retail shop are made by the company, using traditional methods and metal moulds dating from 1910 to 1940 - a time when the chocolate industry was just starting to grow in Europe. A window observatory area will be available for viewing the chocolate making process from start to finish, with specially organised chocolate demos every day! The finest chocolate made right before your eyes is available to sample for free. After seeing the chocolate demonstrations and learning about chocolate you might like to enjoy a traditionally made hot chocolate (French style, thick Italian style, spicy hot chocolate) from the Chocolateria. French crepes and desserts will be available as well. Luka Handcrafted Chocolates have relocated their current chocolate manufacturing operations to the historic Wyong Milk Factory. The heritage ambience and cultural context of the site complements the chocolate factory and retail shop and will include the Australian Artisan Chocolate School which will provide Chocolate Making Classes for adults and children, Chocolate theme parties and

The Carousel This historic icon has charmed and delighted young and old at The Entrance since 1930. It has seen a number of owners since its arrival in Australia from France in the early 1900s and is now part of the National Trust classified Haas Family carnival, a family that has 400 years of carnival ancestry. The carousel, which was built in the late 1800s in Germany, was originally ‘powered’ by a pony but was converted to steam at the turn of the century. It remained steam driven until the 1950s when an old chev. engine was installed, and was converted to electricity in the 1970s. Its reed pipe organ, operated by bellows, remained in commission until 1950. Music is now supplied by tape, although the organ front has been restored. The carousel has pride of place on The Entrance waterfront where it is visited by not only today’s children, but by the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents of those children.

What to See & Do The Pelican Feeding in The Entrance Memorial Park is a highlight of any visit. Daily at 3.30pm The Entrance Heritage Walk is one of the best on the Central Coast and visitors will also enjoy the Coast to Lake Walk. Ettalong Beach, Woy Woy & Kincumber Ettalong Beach Foreshore Reserve Redevelopment On the 21 December 2013 a large area of the Ettalong Beach Foreshore Reserve was reopened to the public. The $5.2 redevelopment included a new sandstone seawall, the upgrade of park and stormwater infrastructure, a Beach Facilities Building, the renourishment of Ettalong Beach. Completion of the shared cycleway/footpath from Picnic Parade to the Ferry Wharf and the construction of the new amenities building at Ferry Road in 2012 were also completed with the funding. Gosford City Council worked closely with the neighbouring property owners, the Peninsula Chamber of Commerce and the Ettalong Beach Business Group to ensure the redevelopment enhanced the natural characteristics of the area and met the 28

needs of the local community. The upgraded park includes two new playgrounds, barbeques, picnic settings, bench seats, a shared cycleway/footpath, a drinking fountain, fitness equipment and a dinghy launch. Improved access and a greater area for passive recreation were achieved through the realignment of the car park and reclamation of a section of the foreshore. The redevelopment had a $2 million dollar funding contribution from the Federal Government, $300,000 from the NSW Government’s Metropolitan Greenspace Program and just over $83,000 from the NSW Office of Environment & Heritage, and $2.79 million from Gosford City Council.

Woy Woy Little Theatre

The highly anticipated Woy Woy Little Theatre production of Tennessee Williams’ Pulitzer Prize winning play “A Streetcar Named Desire” opens at the Peninsula Theatre in Woy Woy on Friday night May 16 for a three weekend season. The story opens as faded Southern belle Blanche DuBois comes to visit her sister, Stella, in a seedy section of New Orleans. Stella’s husband Stanley suspects Blanche of holding out on his wife’s inheritance money. On the fringes of sanity, Blanche soon discovers that she cannot outrun her past and the stage is set for her final, brutal confrontation with her brother-in-law. Stanley Kowalski is played by newcomer Xavier Ryan who recently moved to the coast after 20 odd years acting in Melbourne.

“Straight and Narrow” When the play “Straight and Narrow” was first presented on the London West End, theatre critics went overboard with their praise. This “funny, touching, clever comedy” (Sunday Mail) is about three siblings, their partners and a domineering mother. The central couple are partners Bob and Jeff whose relationship is in crisis. Meanwhile Nona’s husband Arthur has run off with a younger woman. The third couple’s marriage is under a cloud as their fifth child is on its way while demanding mother Vera is totally confused. A cast of seven bring this production to life Gerard Dunning, Will Burke, Helen Herridge, Trevor Doyle, Christine Cherry and John Lusty while well-known character actress Joan Dalgleish is having a lot of fun with the role of the meddling mother Vera.

Front: Xavier Ryan and Kellie Martin, Rear: Christine Vale and Graham Vale

“STREETCAR” on track for Woy Woy Little Theatre:

His pregnant wife in the play, Stella, is played by another WWLT newcomer Kellie Martin while her sister Blanche is played by award winning actor Christine Vale. Tennessee Williams’ “A Streetcar Named Desire” is one of the most acclaimed plays of all time. First staged in 1948, Streetcar is a classic drama that is regularly revised professionally. For tickets, book on line (woywoylt.com.au) or on the phone 4344 4737 (leave your name and number – a volunteer will get back to you). “I love characters like Vera,” said Joan. “You can have so much fun in creating this interfering domineering soul and it turns out that mother has a secret of two of her own” laughed Joan. Book on line (woywoylt.com.au) - by phone on 4344 4737 - or in person at the Peninsula Theatre Box Office one hour before the show. WWLT shows are no longer booked through the Laycock Street Theatre website.

the lakes, by the sea and near the trees. Surrounded by water on three sides with Tuggerah Lake to the South, Budgewoi Lake to the North and the ocean to the East. The area is a waterfront haven for fishermen, boating enthusiasts, windsurfers, jet skiers, divers, surfers and beach lovers. The North Wyrrabalong National Park is located within 5kms of the Toukley CBD on the North Entrance Peninsula between the townships of Norah Head and the North Entrance. A network of walking tracks help you explore the varied landscape of the park. The ocean side is mostly coastal dunes with beach access which leads to popular unpatrolled surfing and fishing areas. On the western side there is a lovely strip of red gum forest, open scrubland, wetlands and the last significant littoral (coastal) rainforest on the Central Coast.

April Term three is just around the corner and enrolments are open now. There are classes for young and old, ensembles for beginners to advanced, and musicianship and music appreciation courses for those who would like to understand better the music they’re listening to. If you’ve ever wanted to understand how music works, wanted to read music and never got the chance to learn or wanted to play a musical instrument, Central Coast Conservatorium is offering a Music Foundations Course, including an introduction to music theory and basic keyboard skills. It’s a perfect introduction to music for those who have always wanted to learn! We also hope to run an Introduction to Improvisation course in Term 3. This class is to introduce students to improvisation: using their imagination to create music on their instrument as they perform. The styles of music covered include contemporary popular music, blues, jazz and Latin music.

Students need to have at least 4 years experience on their instrument. Classes are conducted in a fun & friendly atmosphere. Enquiries are welcome. Enrolments are also open for primary school students wanting to join our Super Band. Super Band, or the Central Coast Primary Wind Ensemble (CCPWE) is an extension program for student musicians playing woodwind, brass or percussion in their school band programs across the Central Coast region. Anyone wanting to audition should contact the Conservatorium on 4324 7477 for rehearsals on Tuesday evenings from 5pm to 7pm. You can call the Marine Rescue radio base at any time to get current weather information. The Bureau of Meteorology sends the marine forecast to every MR base whenever it is updated. The operators on duty often talk to boaties about the conditions they are experiencing so they are aware of local conditions. Many bases also have a local weather station so they are a good source of weather information that will help keep you safe on the water. Volunteer Bob Knowles ‘on the job’ at the Marine Rescue Base at Point Clare

An important duty for any skipper is monitoring the weather not only before you go boating but also while you’re out on the water to ensure the safety of your passengers. An important monitoring tool is your marine radio.

Seacoast Fishing The freshest seafood on the Coast... Our commercial

fishing business has been operating from Kincumber for the past 9 years and we have the freshest fish in town, straight from the boat to our shop, which is located 400m from the scenic road roundabout towards Macmasters Beach. Our catch consists of Snapper, Ocean Jackets, Bream trevally, mullet (which is the catch of the month!) and Lobsters. We also have local Oysters, school prawns and a variety of frozen products As the weather cools and the westly winds start, our mullet season begins in April and May. This is when the big mullet schools come out of our estuaries and travel to the sea. Mullet has the best omega 3 oil content, which is so good for us, flavour is strong, but a great fish to eat (our favourite). Fresh is Best!

Valentina explains...

“What the …. Is a Crystal Grid?” Manifestation, Magic and Mayhem! It’s all in there in your crystal grid as send Love and Light to yourself and/or others, re-invigorating healing and abundance in all areas of your life. As you activate and direct crystals for vibrational (or energetic) clearance be prepared for change … that’s where the mayhem can come in! You may find after a week or so you have the feeling of enhanced inner guidance … a renewed confidence in your own abilities to navigate every area of your life. Clear a small area for your crystal grid that you can keep just for you – I have one on the dresser in my bedroom and one in my healing room for clients. In the middle place a picture of yourself and/or a friend you wish to help; write something positive on the back. You could also write down goals on a piece of paper. Place your central crystal on top of the papers/ pictures – the central crystal is traditionally an amethyst pyramid but you could also use a single pointed crystal, a double terminated crystal, a cluster or a crystal ball.
