Embrace your sense of adventure this October! Whether you want to get out on the land or have a splash the water, the Central Coast has the fun you’re looking for! The range of adventure activities at Glenworth Valley Outdoor Adventures, located at Peats Ridge, will get your blood pumping – choose from horse riding, abseiling, kayaking and even quad biking! Just up the road at the Australian Reptile Park the 50th birthday celebrations for roadside icon Ploddy the Dinosaur continue, and as always kids (and the young at heart) can get handson with a range of reptiles as well as some cuddly mammals! There’s also lots of family fun to be had at Amazement, Wyong Creek – with an animal farm, magical mazes and games galore. Treetop Adventure Park offers a chance to get adventurous in high in the trees. Monkey around with a range of challenges and obstacles including breathtaking flying-foxes! October also sees the Surf Life Saving Season underway – selected beaches become patrolled as the weather heats up! If you’d prefer to be on the water than in it, you can get out and about on pedalboats or stand-up paddleboards from Aquafun at Avoca Lake, or hire a BBQ Boat from Anderson’s Boat Shed at Booker Bay and spend a relaxed

afternoon on the water. The Coast loves its sport and there’s no shortage of major sporting events coming up this month too: the Eastern Region Roller Derby brings teams from all over the state to Niagara Park on the October long weekend (5th & 6th – and it’s set to include a Guinness World Record Attempt for the longest conga line on roller skates!); our local A-League club, Championship winners the Central Coast Mariners kick off their new season with a grand final re-match against Western Sydney Wanderers at Bluetongue Stadium Gosford on October 12; and the annual Central Coast 7’s International Rugby Event bringing in a range of domestic and international rugby sides with men’s, women’s and schoolboys competitions all take centre stage from October 25 to 27! Chromefest rounds out the month with a huge weekend of classic hot-rods and rock ‘n’ roll which is set to take over The Entrance for a three-day festival (October 25-27). Make sure you keep an eye out early in November for the Brisbane Water Oyster Festival too – more adventure and event details at www.visitcentralcoast.com.au.

New playground coming soon to Elizabeth Ross Park! Located adjacent to the Japanese Gardens in East Gosford, the new playground will cater to all ages. With picnic facilities including a double BBQ, picnic tables and plenty of space to throw out a picnic rug, you can make it a memorable day out for the whole family. There is a flying fox for those who are a little daring, an enchanted garden with mushrooms, toadstools, a large log tunnel and a rainbow where children of all ages can lose themselves in imaginative play. Smartie seats are scattered around the flying fox through the garden which makes a great space to sit and chill out. A special area for toddlers with their own pint size lady bird slide and sunflower swing. A beautiful timber quad swing to accommodate all ages and abilities. Relax and unwind in this space or run around and kick a ball. Take a walk along the friendship walk to the Caroline Bay Arts Centre and visit the Japanese Gardens, there are so many things to do. The playground has been designed to form a link with the Japanese Gardens and includes a meandering blossom tree walk, a large timber swing set shape reflective of Japanese Kanji Script and cute toddler equipment including a ladybird slide and sunflower swing. The Mayor of Edogawa, Gosford’s Sister City, planted a Magnolia tree in the playground as a commemorative symbol of our 25th Sister City Anniversary and of the bond of friendship that we share. For more details on Gosford City Playgrounds visit www.playgrounds.mygosford.com.au or contact Council’s Parks Development Officer on 4325 8458.

IS YOUR BOAT READY FOR SUMMER? Our mild winter, recent warm weather and now daylight hours growing longer many boaties are thinking ahead about their summer weekends on the water. Now is the time to prepare your boat so those days are trouble free. The most common problems experienced by boaties who call Marine Rescue Central Coast for help are electrical, fuel and mechanical. Mechanical problems are often due to lack of maintenance, failed lubrication and lack of replacement of worn parts. Fuel is usually due to ‘old’ petrol (the fuel left standing in the tank over winter) or using E10 unleaded fuel. Adding fresh premium grade unleaded to the tank often clears up those problems. Electrical is another matter. Just charging the battery a day or two before you go boating is not good enough. Charge and check to see that the battery holds the charge for at least week. Check the function of items powered by the battery, the marine radio, the bilge pump and the navigation lights. Before hitting the road, check the trailer tires and its lights as well. With good preparation you will enjoy your summer boating and hopefully not require the services of Marine Rescue Central Coast.

“Everything old is new again” These are inexpensive, look the part, but definitely have a time limit. So what do we do with our treasures of yesteryear? We reinvent them, appreciate their longevity and understand where they can fit into today’s designs. It is amazing what a coat of paint can do for the look of an item, it can transform a tired old piece into a new “work of art” with a little imagination new handles, some

slight adjustments and then..... “ Everything old is new again”. Please see the images below of our before and after shots of four different pieces of furniture with explanations that can be attached as below.

Interiors & Exteriors

Furniture of yesteryear was constructed of beautiful timbers and built by highly crafted tradespeople. Polished by French polishers and made to wear the test of time. Today we live in a throwaway society, not only do we throw away these beautiful pieces of quality, but we buy, and then in a short time, throw away what I call fashion accessory pieces, made in China and made for a fashion which is not meant to last.

After

After Before

Before

This is an intricately carved timber side table which we have gilded with silver leaf, distressed and given a white wash finish to tone it down.

The pictures above are of an vintage occasional table which had been very poorly lacquered, so we sanded it all back, painted the base white and to keep the beautiful detail of the top we created a lime wash finish.

Before Before Before

After

An early 18th century hand carved French mirror, made of fruit tree wood, had been painted grey so we tried to strip all of the paint off to take it back to its original beauty. This was not possible, so the only thing that we could do for it was to make it more beautiful than ever before by gilding it in a 23 carat gold leaf. Then we antiqued it and sealed it for protection.

After This is an antique timber box that we added mouldings to, and finished it in one of our real liquid metal coatings (aluminium) Great for use on furniture that could be put out in an outside area and not be affected by the weather, as it leaves a coating of metal on the substrate.

Renovating or Updating?

I have been specializing in painted finishes on kitchens and furniture on the Central Coast for 20 years. There are many advantages to paint finishes, whether you are revamping something old or creating something new. Not only are the advantages of paint an aesthetic appeal, in today’s living there is also the environmental issue. A lot of synthetic coatings are being used today which omit toxic fumes for the lifespan of the product. Once paint has cured, it omits no harmful vapours and can also lock in vapours from the underlying substrate, making it environmentally friendly. Whether it is new or updating your home. You can get as creative as you like. Using paint and the beauty of it is that you can always paint over it at a later date as fashions or trends change. An easy way to change your furniture, whether updating or moving house, is to have your existing furniture repainted professionally, to create a whole new look and feel. Phone us to find out all of your options. You will be amazed.

Spring is a fantastic time to get the whole family involved in some productive outdoor fun. Children love to dig in the soil and with just a little assistance can develop a lifelong interest in gardening. Choose something easy to start off with such as Strawberries or Sunflowers. Both will grow easily in a nice sunny spot in the garden, or can be planted in pots if space is limited. Herbs are another great first choice and many types can be purchased in small pots or grown from seed. With a little creativity these can be grown in a wide range of recycled containers..an old bath, laundry tub or wheel barrow. Spring is Tomato time, so grow the old favourite cherry variety “Sweet Bite”. Its quick to grow, disease free and the fruit can be eaten off the vine with the warmth of the sun still in them. Like all

tomatoes keep them well fed with a liquid food and plant them in the sun Garden art is another way of getting littlies involved. Some colourful paint can turn an old gate into a garden feature, dress up some old pots, or brighten up a fence. Keep up the colour with flowers in amongst the veggies, Lavender attracts pollinating insects and Nasturtiums and Marigolds keep off the bugs. A small frog pond is an easy weekend project. Use a small pre formed pool, square of pond liner, or the old sand pit. Plant with a couple of native reeds and pop in a couple of Native fish to keep out the mozzies. The kids will enjoy watching and waiting for the first tadpoles to appear over summer. Whichever project you choose, Spring is natures planting time so give it a go now!

Woy Woy Little Theatre presents Competitive Tenderness Competitive Tenderness, a wonderfully funny Australian comedy penned by the brilliant Hannie Rayson, is directed by Christine Vale who won high praise for her interpretation of the fastmoving farce The Thirty-Nine Steps staged twelve months ago. Dawn Snow (Annie Bilton) is a tenacious woman, whether running a highly successful chain of weigh loss clinics, or, the comparatively simple act of reforming the Ugandan Prison System. Brian, The Mayor of Greater Burke (Paul Russell), is far less tenacious. In fact he’s the opposite of tenacious. He’s a mayor. Kel (Bob Farmer), Trevor (John Lusty) and Piggy (Richard Holz) are just your average Aussie blokes. Except one is Greek. Spot him if you can. Delia (Jen Mealing) and Amelia (Charlotte Otton) are two well meaning Secretaries. Enough said. Dragi Smilevski (Graham Vale) is a megalomaniac smallgoods magnate who, when he’s not concocting delicious (if a little off putting) sausage recipes, dreams of taking over the world-one cured pork loin at a time. So then, Dawn is the CEO of Greater Burke Municipality. Brian is the Mayor of Greater Burke. Brian is infatuated with Dawn. Dawn not so with Brian. Kel is in Traffic and Local Laws, Trevor is in Dog Catching and Pig is fat and has bad skin. They are all a part of Dawn’s plan to overhaul the local Municipal Council of Greater Burke (to say nothing of Kenny the Dog!). Not sure how? Me either. Woy Woy Little Theatre presents Hannie Rayson’s Competitive Tenderness only at the Peninsula Theatre Woy Woy from October 25, 2013 – 10 performances only.

Wollombi is located north-east of Sydney, just 90 minutes from Sydney’s northern suburbs. A significant meeting point on the northsouth trade and travel route for coastal Aboriginal peoples, the Wollombi Valley was inhabited for thousands of years by Aborigines. Wollombi later played a key role in the expansion of the Sydney colony in the 1820s. The Great North Road, an extraordinary engineering feat built by convict labour, branching at Wollombi as it extended from Sydney to the north and north-east. Today, the tranquillity of the valley hides a vibrant lift with strong artistic and social activities. Continue along George Downes Drive after visiting Kulnura and enjoy the beautiful scenic drive to Wollombi.

Honey, have you been Sugared yet? Phâro Sugaring Gel is made from only NATURAL INGREDIENTS, beautiful fragrance and the therapeutic benefits of Manuka Honey, Kiwifruit and Lemon. A real spa experience. Less discomfort, Less redness, Less Ouch! Sugar wax adheres to hair not the skin, traditional resin based wax products often adhere to the skin resulting in lifting live skin cell layers when removed. Sugaring reduces broken and ingrown hairs. One of the most common problems with waxing is early regrowth due to broken hairs. Waxing can leave 15-30% breakage behind. Since wax hardens on the hair, it has the tendency to break the hair off at the surface, rather than pull it out. Phâro Sugaring Gel wraps around the hair shaft making it pliable, while seeping below the mouth of the follicle and lubricating the hair to make the hair removal experience more complete and gentle. At KarmaSpa we only use Pharo Sugar, and best of all we don’t charge any more for this! We have 3 full time, CIDESCO qualified beauty therapists with over 30 years combined experience in this industry. We pride ourselves on providing our clients with excellent service and outstanding value for money.

It has seen a number of owners since its arrival in Australia from France in the early 1900s and is now part of the National Trust classified Haas Family carnival, a family that has 400 years of carnival ancestry. The carousel, which was built in the late 1800s in Germany, was originally ‘powered’ by a pony but was converted to steam at the turn of the century. It remained steam driven until the 1950s when an old chev. engine was installed, and was converted to electricity in the 1970s. Its reed pipe organ, operated by bellows, remained in commission until 1950. Music is now supplied by tape, although the organ front has been restored. The carousel has pride of place on The Entrance waterfront where it is visited by not only today’s children, but by the parents, grandparents and greatgrandparents of those children.

How wonderfully spoilt we are on lunc l specia the Coast with the Restaurants From we now have to choose from. $ .90 This is one of those surprises... The food at ‘N THAI SING is cooked with love by BOW. She makes all her own sauces and creates some amazingly delicious dishes. We are working our way through the specials and recommend this as one of the best on the Coast. The Siam Duck is so very tender and delicious you will want to lick the plate. Panang Prawns and Scallop Lychee is another favourite, it is so hard to not keep ordering the ones tried previously because they create a gastronomic memory and when you see the name on the Menu the mouth waters. Seacoast Fishing The freshest seafood on the Coast Our commercial fishing business has been operating from Kincumber for the past 8 years with the freshest fish in town, straight from the boat to our shop, which is located 400mtrs from the scenic road roundabout towards Macmasters Beach. We supply Snapper, Ocean Jackets, Bream trevally, mullet and Lobsters. We also have local Oysters, school prawns and a variety of frozen products. As our weather cools and the westly winds start, mullet season begins for us April and May, this happens each year when the mullet schools up in big patches coming out of our estuaries and they travel to the sea, this is where our licensed boys use the hauling nets to catch some, most of the mullet schools head straight out to sea, but some travel along the coastline for a while, these are the fish the boys try to catch. Mullet has the best omega 3 oil content, which is so good for us, flavour is strong, but a great fish to eat (our favourite). Fresh is Best! Open Thursday & Friday 11am to 6pm, Saturday 9am to 6pm. The best Haloumi Outside of Cyprus... The Judges of the 2013 Sydney Royal have awarded Central Coasts own Cheese Factory “Little Creek Cheese” a Gold Medal for their BBQ Cheese (Haloumi). The only one issued in this class. Up against large companies that specialize in Haloumi from around Australia, the local family claimed the title. Russell Parsons, owner and Cheese maker said “It’s satisfying to know all the hard work has paid off." He also stated “we know it is the best but to get the recognition from the cheese judges is the icing on the cake." Their Haloumi is all hand made from cow’s milk, which they receive from the Riverina area. It’s made fresh, sold fresh and has a wonderful texture and flavour but does not go as rubbery as other ones that are on the market. Located in the Old Milk Factory at Wyong, Russell and Sue work 7 days a week with the help of Sues’ son Alex to produce their Haloumi, Fetta’s, Soft Curd, Ricotta and Labna. Open 10am till 4pm, 7 days a week. They also attend lots of Farmers Markets where they have their Gold Medal winning Haloumi for sale. www.littlecreekcheese.com.au littlecreekcheese@hotmail.com Old Wyong Milk Factory 02 4353 2433 or 0488 481 441

Luka Handcrafted Chocolates Luka Handcrafted chocolate is a young, Central Coast based company, specialising in premium handcrafted chocolates. As such, at “LUKA®”, only the most premium ingredients are used. The chocolates are classical in style, reflecting his background, with the emphasis on a wide variety in flavours and textures, displaying all the skills of the true chocolatier. As the main ingredient, premium Belgian couverture is used. In keeping with current European trends, part of the range is based on single origin couvertures. Rather than being couvertures blended from a variety of beans sourced from different areas, these couvertures use beans sourced from unique, single regions only, bringing out their varietal characteristics. As with wines, these couvertures show “terroir “ indeed. Single origins used include Java, Grenade, Cuba, Vanuatu, Tanzania and Ariba(Equador).

It’s birthday time at the Australian Reptile Park! We’re inviting everyone to join in the celebrations these Spring school holidays! Our giant dinosaur Ploddy, modelled on the ancient diplodocus, is having a Golden Jubilee and is celebrating 50 years as Australia’s first big roadside icon in September. Ploddy has been the faithful Park mascot at both Wyoming and Somersby locations. Constructed in 1963 with steel and cement, Ploddy weighs a whopping 100 tonnes and is 26 metres in length. Local schools have been decorating cards, designing posters, writing poems and sending birthday wishes to Ploddy and these will be displayed at the Park during the holidays. Our visitors will enjoy a free piece of Ploddy birthday cake every day of the school holidays. The Reptile Park shares its birthday with its most lovable resident, Hugo, the giant Galapagos tortoise. The Park and Hugo turn 63 these holidays and kids can meet Hugo up close during his daily walk at 11.30am. There’s only one thing Hugo loves more than his daily walk and that’s hibiscus! It’s his favourite food and keepers will do their best to spoil

him with the colourful flower. Our beautiful baby wombat, Ruby, turns one and our Alligator Snapping Turtle, Terminator, turns 30. Terminator was one of just three animals to survive the devastating fire of 2000 in which many reptiles perished. The Reptile Park has been bringing smiles and saving lives for 63 years and continues its venomous snake and funnel web spider milking programs with pride. The Park is the sole supplier of venom to CSL, who produce lifesaving snake and spider anti-venom. Our contribution has saved over 300 funnel web spider bite victims since its inception 31 years ago. The venomous snake program helps save 300 lives every year and the snakes we milk include the deadliest in the world. Enjoy wildlife shows every day, pose for a photo with a giant Burmese python, wombat, koala or alligator and see Elvis, our resident crocodile leap for his lunch at 1.30pm every day of the holidays. Join us for birthday celebrations and free cake every day of the Spring school holidays at the Australian Reptile Park – the hands-on zoo!!!
