September September – spring on the Coast It’s a wonderful time on the Central Coast, throw in a fishing line when you hire your boat from Andersons Boatshed or just cruise around enjoying the scenery. I love the BBQ Boats because they have a toilet on board are pet friendly and you don’t need a special licence to drive one, as long as you have a drivers licence you can skipper your boat. This is one of my favourite things to do on the water. The other are, riding at Glenworth Valley or a day at the Reptile Park. I also love good food and you will find some of the best on offer in your iMag. This month we have increased the size of your iMag by 8 pages and the circulation is now up to 9,000 issues. We have 2 new sections to interest you the home decorator “Interiors & Exteriors “with good advice given to you by Deborah Buckley and Penrose Nursery “Your Good health & Wellbeing” is another new monthly feature and hopefully this will help you to find organic medications to pampering you and your soul. When you visit the Hinterland it is just a short drive to either Spencer (for the best

Contents hamburgers or scones) or Wollombi, here you will find the Wollombi Wool store and some magnificent wineries. We are so lucky that we have the best of everything one could want all within a short distance away. Farewell to an Icon. It saddens me to tell you we are losing my favourite book shop. Richards Old Books will be closing down in November. From now till then they are having a MASSIVE BOOK SALE. Richards have been in iMag since we started 21yrs ago, it is such a shame that modern technology means people no longer wants to read a book but go on line to read. Here is your chance to become a COLLECTOR go and see the 6,000 books on SALE. See page 26 for more details. HAPPY FATHERS DAY When you call in to any of our wonderful advertisers, without whom this free guide would not be possible, please let them know you found them in iMag!

Bushcare Program Seeking Volunteers The Gosford Council Bushcare Program provides an opportunity for volunteers from the community to help restore areas of their local bushland. The Bushcare Program is open to anyone, including children under parental supervision, as there are volunteer groups throughout the Gosford area. You can choose the location and the meeting times to suit you, with most groups meeting once per month for 2-3 hours. You are welcome to try out a number of different groups, in numerous vegetation communities, to find one that you feel most comfortable with. The social side of being a Bushcare volunteer is equally rewarding, especially when sharing a morning tea with homemade treats after tackling weeds. When you join a team more often than not you’ll make friends with a like minded group of people that find reward in doing something practical for the bushland reserves

close to where they live. As a Bushcare volunteer you will become a part of a larger network of people who like to stay healthy, happy and want to contribute to positive change all over Australia. If you want to volunteer and help to restore Gosford’s beautiful bushland

there’s bound to be a group to interest you. To find out more about the Bushcare Program contact Council’s Bushcare Officers Anna Deegan or Michael Smith from Monday to Friday between 9am – 3pm on 4325 8222 or send an email to bushcare@gosford.nsw.gov.au

Marine Rescue NSW What’s your Emergency Plan? All recreational boaters should prepare an emergency plan. Skippers should think about what to do in the event of an incident so that they can give clear instructions to family or friends onboard. If your boat suddenly began to take on water, you need to raise the alarm by radio. You could set off flares and activate your emergency position-indicating radio beacon (EPIRB). Part of the plan should include teaching others how to use the marine radio to call for help in the event of an injury to the skipper. When boating offshore, it is critical that you have the appropriate safety gear readily accessible. Items such as - • A marine radio for communication with Marine Rescue • Red (for night) and orange (for day-time) flares that are ‘in date’ • A registered type 406 EPIRB (preferably with built-in GPS) • A lifejacket of the correct size for every person onboard, especially children Marine Rescue Central Coast radio bases at Gosford and Terrigal monitor 27MHz and VHF marine radio calling frequencies seven days-a week. If you carry a mobile phone please put Marine Rescue Central Coast’s number in your call list, ‘just in case’ – 4325 7929.

Renovating or Updating?

I have been specializing in painted finishes on kitchens and furniture on the Central Coast for 20 years. There are many advantages to paint finishes, whether you are revamping something old or creating something new. Not only are the advantages of paint an aesthetic appeal, in today’s living there is also the environmental issue. A lot of synthetic coatings are being used today which omit toxic fumes for the lifespan of the product. Once paint has cured, it omits no harmful vapours and can also lock in vapours from the underlying substrate, making it environmentally friendly. Whether it is new or updating your home. You can get as creative as you like. Using paint and the beauty of it is that you can always paint over it at a later date as fashions or trends change. An easy way to change your furniture, whether updating or moving house, is to have your existing furniture repainted professionally, to create a whole new look and feel. Phone us to find out all of your options. You will be amazed.

“Everything old is new again”

Today we live in a throwaway society, not only do we throw away these beautiful pieces of quality, but we buy, and then in a short time, throw away what I call fashion accessory pieces, made in China and made for a fashion which is not meant to last. These

Before

are inexpensive, look the part, but definitely have a time limit. So what do we do with our treasures of yesteryear? We reinvent them, appreciate their longevity and understand where they can fit into today’s designs. It is amazing what a coat of paint can do for the look of an item, it can transform a tired old piece into a new “work of art” with a little imagination new handles, some slight adjustments and then..... “

After

This piece was totally striped back and then finished in one of our acrylic decorative paint finishes and reupholstered in the customer’s choice of fabric.

Before

Everything old is new again”. Please see the images below of our before and after shots of four different pieces of furniture with explanations that can be attached as below.

After

This is an old bathroom wash basin cabinet which we have revamped with a white distressed finish but still showing the inlay work from the original piece with some new handles and it is now back to a beautiful piece.

Before

Interiors & Exteriors

Furniture of yesteryear was constructed of beautiful timbers and built by highly crafted tradespeople. Polished by French polishers and made to wear the test of time.

After

This piece was striped and then covered in our liquid metal coatings with a lace embossed pattern put into the top. This a beautiful finish which leaves a 2mm coating of metal of the piece. Great for use on furniture that could be put on an outside undercover area.

Before

After

This setting was truly in a state of depression. We had it sandblasted, metal primed and finished in this gorgeous exterior grade 2pac polyurethane high gloss finish. Definitely a WOW factor.

Penrose Spring inenthe Gard Spring is a fantastic time to get the whole family involved in some productive outdoor fun. Children love to dig in the soil and with just a little assistance can develop a lifelong interest in gardening. Choose something easy to start off with such as Strawberries or Sunflowers. Both will grow easily in a nice sunny spot in the garden, or can be planted in pots if space is limited. Herbs are another great first choice and many types can be purchased in small pots or grown from seed. With a little creativity these can be grown in a wide range of recycled containers..an old bath, laundry tub or wheel barrow. Spring is Tomato time, so grow the old favourite cherry variety “Sweet Bite. Its quick to grow, disease free and the fruit can be eaten off the vine with the warmth of the sun still in them. Like all

tomatoes keep them well fed with a liquid food and plant them in the sun Garden art is another way of getting littlies involved. Some colourful paint can turn an old gate into a garden feature, dress up some old pots, or brighten up a fence. Keep up the colour with flowers in amongst the veggies, Lavender attracts pollinating insects and Nasturtiums and Marigolds keep off the bugs. A small frog pond is an easy weekend project. Use a small pre formed pool, square of pond liner, or the old sand pit. Plant with a couple of native reeds and pop in a couple of Native fish to keep out the mozzies. The kids will enjoy watching and waiting for the first tadpoles to appear over summer. Whichever project you choose, Spring is natures planting time so give it a go now!

Wollombi is located north-east of Sydney, just 90 minutes from Sydney’s northern suburbs. A significant meeting point on the northsouth trade and travel route for coastal Aboriginal peoples, the Wollombi Valley was inhabited for thousands of years by Aborigines. Wollombi later played a key role in the expansion of the Sydney colony in the 1820s. The Great North Road, an extraordinary engineering feat built by convict labour, branching at Wollombi as it extended from Sydney to the north and north-east. Today, the tranquillity of the valley hides a vibrant lift with strong artistic and social activities. Hooray it’s Spring “Spring is nature’s way of saying let’s party” Robin Williams I can’t believe how quickly the years go by, here we are at Spring again. The valley is celebrating with our Spring festival. The scarecrows are out and about. It is a great outing for the kids to enjoy the creativity of the valley community and vote for your favourite scarecrow, so come for a drive to my shop and see them along the roadside on the way. A nice idea to create interest to your Spring trees is to hang ornaments from the tree limbs adding to “the Party feel”. We have lots of ideas so come in to our shop and be inspired. Central Coast Conservatorium presents

STOMP The Broadway, West End and international sensation STOMP is back, and it’s better than ever! Following their acclaimed performance at the Closing Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics, STOMP returns to Sydney from 10 to 15 September, with new routines, new choreography and new music. Wordless, witty and fun, STOMP has become a global phenomenon over the last 22 years. Its universal language of rhythm, theatre, comedy and dance has resonated with audiences throughout the world, setting feet stamping, fingers drumming and adrenalin rushing for over 15 million people in 50 countries across 5 continents. STOMP is a show that continues to evolve – new music and choreography combine with signature high-octane slick choreography, tight ensemble work, industrial percussion, and continuous comedy; as the irrepressible troupe of eight performers turn brooms into soft shoe partners, clapping into intricate conversations and water cooler bottles into sophisticated instruments. From 10 September at Theatre Royal Sydney. Book at Ticketmaster.com.au or 1300 723 038

The Entrance The Carousel

This historic icon has charmed and delighted young and old at The Entrance since 1930. It has seen a number of owners since its arrival in Australia from France in the early 1900s and is now part of the National Trust classified Haas Family carnival, a family that has 400 years of carnival ancestry. The carousel, which was built in the late 1800s in Germany, was originally ‘powered’ by a pony but was converted to steam at the turn of the century. It remained steam driven until the 1950s when an old chev. engine was installed, and was converted to electricity in the 1970s. Its reed pipe organ, operated by bellows, remained in commission until 1950. Music is now supplied by tape, although the organ front has been restored. The carousel has pride of place on The Entrance waterfront where it is visited by not only today’s children, but by the parents, grandparents and greatgrandparents of those children.

Her medium of choice is watercolour because it has a ‘beautiful soft quality’. There are many things that inspire Rita, for example, her mood can dictate which direction her painting will evolve. She loves colour and when her mood is energetic and happy her paintings are bright & colourful and darker moods create darker paintings. Many people inspire her, including her son, class friends and Australian artist Ken White. Rita paints as often as she can in between running a business, and general home maintenance. Best wishes to Rita in her ‘Art World’ journey.

NEW! Organic and Middle Eastern food Following feedback from our customers, we have expanded our product range to now include Organic and Middle Eastern groceries. So next time you’re in, be sure to ask us about what’s new. Also, we are always looking for suggestions about what you would like to see on our shelves, so please be sure to let us know! If you haven’t stopped by recently, you may not know that we’ve changed our name to Chan’s Asian Supermarket (previously Vplus). But other than expanding our product range, everything else is unchanged – same location, same management and same quality service. Why not start with one of our top sellers including BBQ Pork, Roast Duck or Dumplings and even do your own Yum Cha or short soup. Now that winter is upon us, maybe it’s time for a traditional ‘Steamboat’ – ask us about the equipment and ingredients to make it happen. Seacoast Fishing The freshest seafood on the Coast Our commercial fishing business has been operating from Kincumber for the past 8 years and we have the freshest fish in town, straight from the boat to our shop, which is located 400mtrs from the scenic road roundabout towards Macmasters Beach. Our catch consists of Snapper, Ocean Jackets, Bream trevally, mullet (which is the catch of the month!) and Lobsters. We also have local Oysters, school prawns and a variety of frozen products. As our weather cools and the westly winds start, mullet season begins for us April and May, this happens each year when the mullet schools up in big patches coming out of our estuaries and they travel to the sea, this is where our licensed boys use the hauling nets to catch some, most of the mullet schools head straight out to sea, but some travel along the coastline for a while, these are the fish the boys try to catch. Mullet has the best omega 3 oil content, which is so good for us, flavour is strong, but a great fish to eat (our favourite). Fresh is Best! We are open Thursday and Fridays 11am to 6pm and Saturday 9am to 6pm. More info on: 43686160 Patanga Street, Kincumber

The best Haloumi Outside of Cyprus... The Judges of the 2013 Sydney Royal have awarded Central Coasts own Cheese Factory “Little Creek Cheese” a Gold Medal for their BBQ Cheese (Haloumi). The only one issued in this class. Up against large companies that specialize in Haloumi from around Australia, the local family claimed the title. Russell Parsons, owner and Cheese maker said “It’s satisfying to know all the hard work has paid off." He also stated “we know it is the best but to get the recognition from the cheese judges is the icing on the cake." Their Haloumi is all hand made from cow’s milk, which they receive from the Riverina area. It’s made fresh, sold fresh and has a wonderful texture and flavour but does not go as rubbery as other ones that are on the market. Located in the Old Milk Factory at Wyong, Russell and Sue work 7 days a week with the help of Sues’ son Alex to produce their Haloumi, Fetta’s, Soft Curd, Ricotta and Labna. Open 10am till 4pm, 7 days a week. They also attend lots of Farmers Markets where they have their Gold Medal winning Haloumi for sale. www.littlecreekcheese.com.au littlecreekcheese@hotmail.com Old Wyong Milk Factory 02 4353 2433 or 0488 481 441

Luka Handcrafted Chocolates Luka Handcrafted chocolate is a young, Central Coast based company, specialising in premium handcrafted chocolates. As such, at “LUKA®”, only the most premium ingredients are used. The chocolates are classical in style, reflecting his background, with the emphasis on a wide variety in flavours and textures, displaying all the skills of the true chocolatier. As the main ingredient, premium Belgian couverture is used. In keeping with current European trends, part of the range is based on single origin couvertures. Rather than being couvertures blended from a variety of beans sourced from different areas, these couvertures use beans sourced from unique, single regions only, bringing out their varietal characteristics. As with wines, these couvertures show “terroir “ indeed. Single origins used include Java, Grenade, Cuba, Vanuatu, Tanzania and Ariba(Equador).

When the bright, warm rays of spring sunlight begin to finally stream through our windows, most of us feel the urge to make sure everything in our homes is fresh, shiny, and dirt-free. But this year, don’t stop with sponging the baseboards, dusting off the shelves, and washing your windows. Take this opportunity to clean out your life, too! Think about it this way: Just as it’s easy for dust and clutter to accumulate (relatively) unnoticed during the short, dark days of winter, it’s also easy for bad habits, poor outlooks, and unhealthy relationships to pile up in your life. If you don’t make a conscious effort to detox, these things will continue to hold you back and weigh you down. There’s no better time than during the renewal of spring to refresh your mind, body, and soul. Here are a few ways you could go about it: Clean your closet. A messy closet is a metaphor for a messy life. First, get rid of any clothes that are old or worn, that don’t fit, that you never wear, or that don’t honor you and your lifestyle. Ask a friend for help if you want an outside perspective. Then, organize what’s left and treat yourself to a few new pieces that embody the blooming spirit of spring. Get some fresh air. Welcome the sunshine and springtime air by taking a walk (or run!) outside a few times a week. Not only will this help you clear your mind and make you feel more energized, it will also aid in shedding some of those unwanted pounds we all put on during the cold winter months. Set healthy boundaries. Moving away from toxic people is a good start when it comes to filling your life with healthy relationships…but don’t stop there! With everyone in your life— even with people who make you feel good and who have your best interests at heart—it’s important to set healthy boundaries. I Get rid of bad habits. Chances are, you can name several of your bad habits off the top of your head. Maybe you’re always running late, or you’ve been overspending lately. Perhaps you tend to procrastinate on big projects until the last minute, or you stuff yourself with junk food when you’re stressed. The truth is, we all have bad habits. And here’s the good news: You can change them! You can consciously improve your reactions, change your routines, and become healthier—mentally, emotionally, and physically. For this spring cleaning project, pick one bad habit—something that causes you a lot of stress would be a good choice. Plant yourself in something new! If you want a flower to bloom as beautifully as possible, you make sure it’s planted in nutrient-rich soil and placed in a spot with

just the right amount of sunlight, warmth, and water. The same principle will hold true for you, too. You’ll blossom when you’re doing things that make you feel happy and fulfilled. Spoil yourself. Have a Full Body Salt Scrub to get rid of dead skin cell, pep up circulation & nourish your skin. Or have a Super Detox Mud Body Wrap to relax, indulge and cleanse your body from toxins, bacteria & pollutants. Visit us at KarmaSpa where we offer a fully range of beauty & pamper treatments. Overall, as you work to spring clean your life, simply be aware of what feels good and what

doesn’t, of what’s healthy and what isn’t, of what makes you happy and what makes you sad. Try to pay attention to areas of your life that you normally take for granted and ask yourself, Is this working? Does it honor the person I am right here and right now? You may be surprised by how much dead weight has been holding you back…and by how quickly you bloom when it’s gone! www.karmaspa.com.au 3 Alison Road, Wyong Ph: 43 51 0777
