May Welcome to the Central Coast in May! Mellow May is such a lovely time of year on the Central Coast. The mildness of Autumn invites us to get out and take long walks on golden beaches or around picturesque lakes. The more adventurous can discover interesting bush tracks in the Coast’s many national parks. Part of the famous Great North Walk can be accessed near Yarramalong in our scenic hinterland. A drive up there will delight the senses and there are many places to stop for nourishment along the way. See our Wyong to Spencer pages for a wonderful days outing. Many establishments are geared up to make Sunday the 12th of May a very special day. There are so many wonderful places to take your Mum on Mother’s day. Ken Duncan & Neale Joseph have a very special May discount as does Karma Spa. You can pamper her and give her a gift she can admire on her wall forever. Please visit Toowoon Bay Gallery for a wonderful selection of Glass, paintings and gifts of a very special kind. See page 20 for more information.
Contents I used to take my Mum to Edogawa Gardens at the Gosford Art Gallery for a stroll around the grounds and a visit to the Gallery. See back page. Gourmet @ Home can come to you and make Mother’s Day a special day at home, especially if Mum cannot travel. What a wonderful surprise for her, the food is mouth-watering, YUM. Opening night of Sculptures on The Greens was a fantastic evening. My dear friend Sharon Ridsdale won a first for her Ceramic “Dragons Lair” series and Kylie Rose for “Fat Quarters”. See page 12. Now this is somewhere you can take Mum as it is on till the end of May. Whatever you choose to do or wherever you choose to go, enjoy the Coast and yourselves. Please take your iMag with you and tell our advertisers how you found them. Till next month... Happy Mothers Day!

Come and see our Seven Wonders on the Central Coast! The crisp autumn air invites you this May – and it’s the perfect time to explore the seven natural wonders of the Central Coast – our National Parks! Along our coastline are three stunning parks – Munmorah State Conservation Area, Wyrrabalong National Park and Bouddi National Park. Coastal bushwalks, secluded beaches and breathtaking lookouts are dotted along these locations and are waiting for you to explore. The stunning vistas in Bouddi National Park look out over an expansive marine conservation area. If you’re looking to get back to nature, both Bouddi and Munmorah parks offer camping grounds just metres from the beach. The coast walking track in the Wyrrabalong park is not to be missed, with great views from Crackneck Point lookout, one of the Central Coast’s amazing 52 Local Secrets! Four parks stand tall in the Central Coast hinterland – Brisbane Water National Park, Jilliby State Conservation Area, Popran National Park and the UNESCO World Heritage Listed Dharug National Park. These parks offer a range of unique activities and features including the waterfalls at Somersby Falls (another one of our 52 Local Secrets, in the Brisbane Water National Park), the Old Great North Road, the best preserved example of convict construction (Dharug) as well as varied camping opportunities along some picturesque river and mountain locations.
Celebrations of history and heritage will be front and centre around the region in May – the 2013 Gosford Regional Show celebrates 125 years on May 4 & 5! Held at Gosford Showground, there’ll be plenty of live entertainment, lots of free activities for the children, animal farm displays, rides & sideshows, Miss Junior Showgirl, cake baking competitions and more – visit www.gosfordregionalshow.com.au for details.

Marine Rescue NSW Communicating from your Boat If anything goes wrong when you are out on the water, you are away from all the usual forms of help available if you were ashore. If you have a mechanical or electrical failure, if you are short of fuel, if you have an accident or fall ill, getting assistance is not easy. Maritime authorities recommend the use of a marine transceiver. Marine Rescue Central Coast volunteers operate from bases at Point Clare on Brisbane Water and from Terrigal Haven 7 days-aweek, to provide help and advice to recreational boaters. To use this free radio service simply call either ‘Marine Rescue Central Coast’ or ‘Marine Rescue Terrigal’ when you leave the ramp, dock or mooring. Tell Marine Rescue (MR) where you are going, when you expect to be back and how many people are aboard. When you get back call again to tell MR you are home and safe. If MR doesn’t hear from you, and are unable to contact you, then they will declare you ‘missing’ and begin a search that will continue until you are located. Can you call by mobile phone? Yes (4325 7929), BUT mobile phones on the water are not as reliable as a marine radio and they provide only point-to-point communications. Radio is ‘broadcast’ and if not heard by the intended recipient may be heard by others who can either provide help or relay your call. Protect yourself and your passengers, ‘Log-On’ every time you venture out on the waterways.
Bushcare Program Seeking Volunteers In the Gosford Bushcare Program, people from the community volunteer their time to come along and help restore areas of their local bushland. The program is open to anyone from the community and there are groups throughout the Gosford area. You can choose which of the locations and meeting times suit you, with most groups meeting once per month for 2-3 hours. You are welcome to try out some of the different groups to find one that you feel most comfortable with. The social side of being a Bushcare volunteer is equally rewarding, especially when sharing a cuppa with homemade treats after tackling weeds. When you join a group more often than not you'll make friends with a like minded group of people that find reward in doing something practical for the bushland reserves close to where they live. As a Bushcare volunteer you will become a part of a larger network of people who like to stay healthy, happy and want to contribute to positive change all over Australia. If you want to volunteer and help to restore Gosford’s beautiful bushland there’s bound to be a group to interest you. To find out more about the Bushcare Program contact Council’s Bushcare Officers Anna Deegan or Michael Smith from Monday to Friday between 9am – 3pm on 4325 8222 or go to Council’s website at www.gosford.nsw.gov.au

Seacoast Fishing The freshest seafood on the Coast... Our commercial fishing business has been operating from Kincumber for the past 8 years and we have the freshest fish in town, straight from the boat to our shop, which is located 400mtrs from the scenic road roundabout towards Macmasters Beach. Our catch consists of Snapper, Ocean Jackets, Bream trevally, mullet (which is the catch of the month!) and Lobsters. We also have local Oysters, school prawns and a variety of frozen products. As our weather cools and the westly winds start, mullet season begins for us April and May, this happens each year when the mullet schools up in big patches coming out of our estuaries and they travel to the sea, this is where our licensed boys use the hauling nets to catch some, most of the mullet schools head straight out to sea, but some travel along the coastline for a while, these are the fish the boys try to catch. Mullet has the best omega 3 oil content, which is so good for us, flavour is strong, but a great fish to eat (our favourite). Fresh is Best! We are open thurs, fridays 11am to 6pm and saturday 9am to 6pm. More info on: 43686160 Patanga Street, Kincumber

Banff Mountain Film Festival Home-grown heroes headline the Banff Mountain Film Festival 2013 Australian tour. Australian audiences will experience incredible highs and agonising lows as they watch this year’s Banff Mountain Film Festival headlining film – Crossing the Ice. For the first time in many years an Australian film took out 3 awards at the weeklong festival in Banff, Canada: festival grand prize, people’s choice award and best film in the ‘exploration and adventure’ category. Since the festival in Canada Crossing the Ice and lovable Aussie larrikins, Cas
Chavez Chiropractic Arizona based medical device manufacturer Neuromechanical Innovations (NMI) announces that Dr. Jorge Chavez has recently incorporated computerized chiropractic adjusting technology at their facility, Chavez Chiropractic in Erina, NSW using the patented Impulse iQ Adjusting Instrument®. The instrument is called “iQ” because it is intelligent – monitoring spinal motion in realtime during each treatment. The Impulse iQ’s internal motion sensor communicates with a micro-chip computer to regulate the treatment creating more efficient treatments that are comfortable and just the right dosage. The developer of this technology, chiropractor, Dr. Chris Colloca, collaborated with biomechanists, engineers, and orthopaedic spine surgeons to conduct research on the new product before its release. The technological benefits of computerized technology allow chiropractors like Dr. Chavez to deliver high-tech controlled treatments that target the underlying source of patient’s pain.

& Jonesy, have been wowing audiences around the globe, being voted the audience most favourite film of the 2013 Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour. Crossing the Ice chronicles Cas & Jonesy’s attempt to be the first to ski unsupported from the edge of Antarctica to the South Pole. And back. The trip, considered to be one of the last great polar challenges, was made all the more epic by one small extra hurdle: To quote Jones, “If we are going to succeed, we should probably learn how to ski.” A good plan, considering they would be on those skies for 2,275 kilometres. Dragging their food and supplies across the unforgiving landscape, in temperatures as low as -40⁰C, the pair experiences the peaks and troughs of being alone and unsupported in one of the harshest environments on
Conditions ranging from low back pain to whiplash, neck pain and headaches are managed by chiropractors with the device. Dr. Chavez is also able to treat extremity conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, shoulder problems and foot pain such as plantar fasciitis with this technology. Chiropractic care is a covered health care service by most major insurances including Medicare.
Earth. Their journey heats up when they discover their record attempt is in jeopardy; there’s a Norwegian on the ice. He’s more experienced, he’s tackling same route, and he has a head start. Presented by World Expeditions, the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour will hit cinemas across Australia from mid-April until the end of June, 2013. Screening 40 times in 18 communities across the Australia, the Banff Mountain Film Festival World tour one of the most prestigious mountain festivals in the world. Deborah Buckley Artisan “Let’s put a little bit of Feng Shui in our lives” Feng Shui helps us to create a harmonious living and working environment. A good place to start is the front door to your home. Stand outside and look at what it faces and what surrounds it. Is there too much clutter? What about cobwebs and dust? The front door is the entrance to your home! The cleanliness and tidiness of your entrance has a great deal of influence on the qi (which is the energy) being bought into your home. A clean and uncluttered front entrance will allow good qi in, bringing good luck and opportunities. An uncared for front entrance does not encourage good qi. What does your front door face? Is it something beautiful, such as a lovely garden, a nice wide open space, or a driveway, or noisy intersection. Some good Feng Shui cures could be using a bagua mirror above the front door, or planting a pretty hedge to help slow down the qi. Enhancing your front door with a “welcome” mat. Plants on either side of your door in nice pots (avoid spiky leaves) And keeping the area well lit and clear of clutter will help to bring in opportunities and good “Feng Shui” into your life.

Wyong Creek Hall The old is new again. The Wyong Creek Hall has been a notable landmark on the Yarramalong Valley Road for almost 100 years, and recently, the Hall has had a facelift under the careful and meticulous hand of Paul Salmon. Paul is a direct descendant of Frederick Salmon, the man who donated the land to the community, and the original builder Mr. Reuben Greentree was a relative of the well-known Greentree family. Paul Salmon has toiled for months and the results of his efforts are depicted in the photos shown in the before and after illustrations. A beautiful new verandah and access ramp have been installed giving the Hall a whole new lease of life, and the new colour scheme has bought the building to life. The Hall is scheduled to undergo further renovations including a beautiful outdoor deck, new kitchen and if you would like to donate to the Hall’s Building Fund it would be greatly appreciated, or by using the Hall for a wedding, event, special celebration, it will ensure the Hall’s future plans can be built. The Hall is available to the Community and enquiries are most welcome. If you would like further information on the Hall, please call 43 56 1502.
Tickets $45 per person (includes lunch). RSVP by 30th April 2013 For bookings, please contact Sharyn Burgess on 0414 341 010 or email sharyn@wyongneighbourhoodcentre.org.au Proceeds to

are handmade. The glass makers are becoming increasingly daring in design, (see the new “Neutron” sculpture) and the vibrant colours are stunning. We have markedly increased our range of metal “nuts and bolts” pieces, in particular the motorbikes. We have also managed to track down some elaborate “gladiators”, and over the next few months we will be receiving sports figures and “Ned Kelly’s”. To meet ever increasing demand for items fitting into a beach theme we have extended our range with some very appealing items at very reasonable prices.

This historic icon has charmed and delighted young and old at The Entrance since 1930. It has seen a number of owners since its arrival in Australia from France in the early 1900s and is now part of the National Trust classified Haas Family carnival, a family that has 400 years of carnival ancestry. The carousel, which was built in the late 1800s in Germany, was originally ‘powered’ by a pony but was converted to steam at the turn of the century. It remained steam driven until the 1950s when an old chev. engine was installed, and was converted to electricity in the 1970s. Its reed pipe organ, operated by bellows, remained in commission until 1950. Music is now supplied by tape, although the organ front has been restored. The carousel has pride of place on The Entrance waterfront where it is visited by not only today’s children, but by the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents of those children.

In the 1990s Etta became recognized as one of the first to bridge the gap between rhythm & blues, rock & roll and pop. She has since inspired the careers of a new generation of artists such as Christina Aguilera, Joss Stone, Amy Winehouse and Adele.
The narrative concert will see Vika put her heart into telling the story of Etta’s turbulent life and give over her soul to voice Etta’s most beloved songs including ‘Tell Mama,’ ‘Something’s Got A Hold On Me’, ‘Pushover’, the heart rending ‘I’d Rather Go Blind’, her iconic signature song ‘At Last’ and many more.
In Cavalia, horses cavort with the many artists in front of a constantly changing digital background projected onto a 60 metre-wide screen, drawing spectators into dream-like virtual environments.

Etta James’ prolific career was shadowed by recurring problems with drug addiction; her time spent playing to thousands of fans juxtaposed with periods inside several prisons and rehab clinics.
How Danny solves his problem, with the help of a mysterious and magical creature, forms the basis for this warm-hearted play about family relationships, with surprising results for the whole family. Julie and Trevor bought the business in July 2012 and have kept the menu the same except for the introduction of roast chickens which are proving to be very popular. This, along with their great coffee (arguably the best in Avoca Beach), fantastic wraps, burgers and fish and chips, as well as fresh juices, smoothies and milkshakes makes Hi Tide Cafe the one stop shop for breakfast and lunch and anything inbetween! Edogawa Japanese Gardens
Looking for a touch of Japan on the Central Coast? Tucked away on the shores of Brisbane Water are the Edogawa Japanese Gardens and Gosford Regional Art Galley. The gallery and the gardens are open daily 9.30 – 4.30pm and are free to visit. Free guided tours of the garden are conducted every Wednesday at 11am by trained volunteer guides who skilfully explain the Japanese aesthetics and philosophies of this garden.
T
he gardens were a gift to the people of Gosford as a symbol of cultural exchange and friendship, by Gosford City Council’s Sister City, Edogawa, (near Tokyo in Japan). It is designed in accordance to the original principles of Japanese design of the Heian (700AD) period. The gardens were officially opened in September 1994 by the Mayor of Gosford and the Mayor of Edogawa. This garden is one of the most popular tourist attractions on the NSW Central Coast. It is based on a traditional 'Shuyu' (strolling style) garden, and covers an area of approximately 4000m2. The meandering pathways lead to traditional Japanese features including, a Japanese teahouse, raked dry stone garden (Karesansui), stone lanterns and a pond filled with Koi fish. 36 Webb Street, East Gosford NSW 2260 | Ph: 02 4325 0056
