From the Editor August Ah yes, the pleasure of being on the Coast in winter. Even though we have had very cold nights, the days when not raining, have been very sunny and perfect for exploring this beautiful region. The response to “FOOD WORTH TRAVELING FOR” has been wonderful. Thank you for letting me know some of your favourite places to visit. We will keep growing this section so more names are very welcome. This month we have Chan’s Asian Supermarket back again (was VPLUS) and they are bigger and better than before with an increased variety from other Countries. See pages 2 & 26. We introduce you to one of the best Thai Restaurants on the Coast; ‘N THAI SING. They have a discount of 20% for you if you purchase between 4.30 to 6pm. See pages 19 & 26. Emma and I are working our way through their menu! Avoca has a new Deli; COAST FINE FOODS. We love their cheeses and gourmet goodies. They are offering you a 10% off total purchases, if you spend what we do this is very welcome.

www.centralcoastimag.com.au

What better way of spending an afternoon than being pampered... Emma (my cousin) and I had a 2 hour treatment at KARMA SPA. I cannot begin to tell you of how magnificent we felt for days afterward. I have my weekly massage here and love it. This is essential to my wellbeing and this is one of the best Spas I have ever been to in my 69 years. Come and be spoilt, you’ll love it! If you listen carefully you will hear the bagpipes calling you to Norah Head... The Gathering of the Clans will exhilarate all those who love the sights and sounds of Scotland. See page 30. August is the perfect time to explore our many national parks as many of our beautiful native plants are in flower. There are some great walks you can take for checking out wildflowers on the Central Coast. You can pick up a brochure from your local visitor centre or Google National Parks & Wildlife Services. When you call in to any of our wonderful advertisers, without whom this free guide would not be possible, please let them know you found them in iMag!

Marine Rescue NSW Going Boating? Are you planning to enjoy some fishing or maybe just to explore the regions magnificent waterways in your boat? Do you have the latest weather forecast? Have you got all the right safety gear including correct size lifejackets for all on board? Are you carrying a type 406 MHz EPIRB? Are you going offshore? If so, do you have a working marine radio and do you know how to use It? Have you planned your trip and checked your fuel for freshness and quantity? If the answer to any of the above is ‘No’, are you really ready to head out? It is wise to have a checklist of all your safety gear and check it a day or two before so you can replace anything that is missing or broken. Check the marine weather forecast on the Bureau’s website or call Marine Rescue Central Coast (4325 7929) before you leave home. If children will be on board ensure you have child size lifejackets and remember to ensure passengers know how to fit them. Use your radio to ‘Log-On’ with Marine Rescue as you leave so someone knows where you are going and when you will be back. That’s a safe way to go boating.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of our Sister City relationship with Edogawa Japan and Nitra Slovakia Gosford City Council has invited delegations from each of the Sister Cities to participate in a range of formal, social and cultural events. The principal delegate from Edogawa City, Mayor Tada will be planting a tree in the revitalised Elizabeth Ross Park Playground to commemorate the anniversary visit. The plant specially selected will be part of a stand of Japanese specimens providing a fitting entry to the Gosford Regional Gallery and Edogawa Commemorative Gardens. The planting of trees in Gosford’s parks and gardens is a wonderful way to symbolise the warmth and friendship between our three cities. These trees grow reminding local residents that the vibrant and mutually rewarding friendship that has continued to blossom over the past twenty-five years.

In the 15th Century Gold Leaf was used Medicinally, sweets covered in gold were served during afternoon meals to sustain the health of your heart. The Elizabethans created decadent banquettes adding gold to theirs fruits and sweets. The Japanese used gold in their sake for centuries. The Italians used gold to decorate their risotto. These are all ideas to help your imagination. Now we have kits for sale in our shop. Take a drive out to the Yarramalong Valley and see for yourself. I can help you with other idea’s as well.

Charlie's Cottage c1900

Fernbank Farm

A QUAINT 2 BEDROOM COTTAGE OF YESTERYEAR

Fernbank Farm recently hosted a visit from the Fairlight and Kulnura Garden Clubs.

Charlie's Cottage in Yarramalong has all the charm of a miners cottage of it's past with modern conveniences. Gas fire, air conditioned, a home away from home. Perfect for that weekend break in the picturesque Valley abundant with bird life.

Our North Shore visitors were delighted with the ambience of the gorgeous sandstone edged lake and also toured the heritage house. Fernbank Farm’s garden is proving popular, and was designed by the renowned garden designer Michael Cooke. The beautiful Landau carriage was on display, and Meg paraded the largest of the Clydesdales in residence at the Farm to the delight of the visitors.

$250 per night per couple or family. Week nights $125 per couple or family. All linen and breakfast basket supplied. Cooking facilities. 25 Ravensdale Rd, Ravensdale Yarramalong Valley NSW 2259 Ph 43561254 0414 615233 www.yarramalongvalley.com.au

A Heritage Cottage with Modern Conveniences

Another lovely event for Fernbank this month was to be involved with a surprise carriage ride for a bride. The groom organized for the carriage to be hidden away at the Jessemma Equestrian Centre, and then, the bride and groom were driven all the way along Wisemans Ferry Road to Linton Gardens. The bride was estatic, and “it made her day”. Weddings at Fernbank are proving popular, and Fernbank is almost booked out until the end of 2014. If you are thinking of having a wedding, this beautiful venue is worthy of your consideration and you can contact Meg on 0414 541901 for a personal tour of the property.

The Entrance The Carousel This historic icon has charmed and delighted young and old at The Entrance since 1930. It has seen a number of owners since its arrival in Australia from France in the early 1900s and is now part of the National Trust classified Haas Family carnival, a family that has 400 years of carnival ancestry. The carousel, which was built in the late 1800s in Germany, was originally ‘powered’ by a pony but was converted to steam at the turn of the century. It remained steam driven until the 1950s when an old chev. engine was installed, and was converted to electricity in the 1970s.

Its reed pipe organ, operated by bellows, remained in commission until 1950. Music is now supplied by tape, although the organ front has been restored. The carousel has pride of place on The Entrance waterfront where it is visited by not only today’s children, but by the parents, grandparents and greatgrandparents of those children.

Such is what happened with Robyn Fisher. In earlier times she attended classes with Robert Doyle at Ourimbah Community College, then returned to the workforce. Much later came retirement and Robyn picked up her brushes again. She has since attended art workshops and classes in most mediums and has gathered a wealth of experience and knowledge. Mostly painting landscapes in oils, Robyn has taken a new direction in her art journey. She is currently working with mixed media in a contemporary style with inks and acrylics. Robyn finds the whole 'Art Experience' rewarding and enjoyable and JAG is proud to support and exhibit her work.

Coast Fine Foods

How wonderfully spoilt we are on the Coast with the Restaurants we now have to choose from. This is one of those surprises... The food at ‘N THAI SING is cooked with love by BOW. She makes all her own sauces and creates some amazingly delicious dishes. We are working our way through the specials and recommend this as one of the best on the Coast. The Siam Duck is so very tender and delicious you will want to lick the plate. Panang Prawns and Scallop Lychee is another favourite, it is so hard to not keep ordering the ones tried previously because they create a gastronomic memory and when you see the name on the Menu the mouth waters. Seacoast Fishing The freshest seafood on the Coast Our commercial fishing business has been operating from Kincumber for the past 8 years and we have the freshest fish in town, straight from the boat to our shop, which is located 400mtrs from the scenic road roundabout towards Macmasters Beach. Our catch consists of Snapper, Ocean Jackets, Bream trevally, mullet (which is the catch of the month!) and Lobsters. We also have local Oysters, school prawns and a variety of frozen products. As our weather cools and the westly winds start, mullet season begins for us April and May, this happens each year when the mullet schools up in big patches coming out of our estuaries and they travel to the sea, this is where our licensed boys use the hauling nets to catch some, most of the mullet schools head straight out to sea, but some travel along the coastline for a while, these are the fish the boys try to catch. Mullet has the best omega 3 oil content, which is so good for us, flavour is strong, but a great fish to eat (our favourite). Fresh is Best! We are open Thursday and Fridays 11am to 6pm and Saturday 9am to 6pm. More info on: 43686160 Patanga Street, Kincumber

The best Haloumi Outside of Cyprus... The Judges of the 2013 Sydney Royal have awarded Central Coasts own Cheese Factory “Little Creek Cheese” a Gold Medal for their BBQ Cheese (Haloumi). The only one issued in this class. Up against large companies that specialize in Haloumi from around Australia, the local family claimed the title. Russell Parsons, owner and Cheese maker said “It’s satisfying to know all the hard work has paid off." He also stated “we know it is the best but to get the recognition from the cheese judges is the icing on the cake." Their Haloumi is all hand made from cow’s milk, which they receive from the Riverina area. It’s made fresh, sold fresh and has a wonderful texture and flavour but does not go as rubbery as other ones that are on the market. Located in the Old Milk Factory at Wyong, Russell and Sue work 7 days a week with the help of Sues’ son Alex to produce their Haloumi, Fetta’s, Soft Curd, Ricotta and Labna. Open 10am till 4pm, 7 days a week. They also attend lots of Farmers Markets where they have their Gold Medal winning Haloumi for sale. www.littlecreekcheese.com.au littlecreekcheese@hotmail.com Old Wyong Milk Factory 02 4353 2433 or 0488 481 441

Luka Handcrafted Chocolates Luka Handcrafted chocolate is a young, Central Coast based company, specialising in premium handcrafted chocolates. As such, at “LUKA®”, only the most premium ingredients are used. The chocolates are classical in style, reflecting his background, with the emphasis on a wide variety in flavours and textures, displaying all the skills of the true chocolatier. As the main ingredient, premium Belgian couverture is used. In keeping with current European trends, part of the range is based on single origin couvertures. Rather than being couvertures blended from a variety of beans sourced from different areas, these couvertures use beans sourced from unique, single regions only, bringing out their varietal characteristics. As with wines, these couvertures show “terroir “ indeed. Single origins used include Java, Grenade, Cuba, Vanuatu, Tanzania and Ariba(Equador).
