Well, the annual whale migration is over, but the Far South Coast is gearing up for another migration visitors making tracks from all over Australia to enjoy our spectacular region and all it has to offer. The Eden Killer Whale Museum has a fantastic photographic exhibition documenting the work, life and play of the Eden community in the early 1900s - don't miss it. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn.

Reflections - A passion for photography leaves enduring legacy residents of the first half of the 20th century. For this exhibition, analogue and digital technologies merge. Digital technology has enabled Hall’s photographs to be reproduced larger than actual size, allowing viewers to wonder at the minute details that analogue photography captured close to a century ago. Costume, facial expressions, tools and all other such details of life caught at the time in a single photograph are now larger than life and more easily examined. Viewers have the chance to be drawn into the image as if they were standing alongside the photographer. Part I of the exhibition reproduces images associated with working and school life of the district and include images associated with the workings of the bustling port of Eden. Part II captures life in the main street of Eden - a time where cars and horses use the same untarred roads. many of them, from dignitary receptions at the Hotel Australasia to sporting matches and milestones associated with sports such as tennis and football. The large and heavy dresses and hats that ladies once wore to play sport are a stark contrast to the tight body hugging uniforms of today. Hall’s passion for photography has provided a lasting and important legacy for Eden and the district, and because of the generosity of his family, today’s viewers are able to be a part of the life that was during the early to mid 20th century. Reflections is open at Eden Killer Whale Museum until 31st December

William Hall's passion for photography has produced one of the best pictorial legacies of the region. Reflections takes a selective look at the working and recreational life of the region in the early part of the 20th century. William Thomas Hall was born in Bega in 1880. He grew up in Tanja, then moved to Rocky Hall with his new wife, finally settling in Eden, where his seven children were born. Hall’s occupations included farmer, newspaper correspondent, auctioneer and agent, and at one time conducted a coach mail and passenger service between Eden and Towamba and the Yambulla gold mines. Secretary of the Grand United Order of Oddfellows and the Eden Exhibition Society, he and his family were regularly involved in community activities and celebrations – more often than not he was also master of ceremonies. His favourite pastime however was photography. From shipwrecks and whale chases to local school events, Hall’s collection of photographs document the lives of the district’s

Merimbula Lake, Merimbula ÂŠ Paul Callaghan

Merimbula Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafes, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St has information and displays about the townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s early European history. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer

Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkelling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close. Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafes with great coffee. Merimbula lights up the skies on NYE To bring in the New Year, Merimbula’s Ford Park is set to light up the skies with fireworks, and a free Music On The Green Concert with the sounds of Soul Machine, one of Sydney’s top rated party bands, and Andy O’Donnell and the Figmentz. The Merimbula Chamber of Commerce, with support from Harvey Norman and Panasonic for the Music on the Green and Power FM’s Fire in the Sky, will present a great day of music, fun and fireworks. It’s family fun with kids entertainment, music, jumping castles, clowns and a few extra surprises. Proceedings start at 5:30pm with entertainment for the kids and fun for all the family. The music will kick

off at 6:30pm and finish with the skies lighting up over Merimbula at midnight. A fireworks spectacular at 9:30pm will entertain the young families, then the actions hots up with live music till midnight. Food, coffee, water and soft drinks will be available all night. This event could not take place without the generosity of the local community and major sponsors Bega Valley Shire Council and Workways. Tathra With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples. Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. Swimming at Tathra’s patrolled beach (summer only) may provide the added bonus of a dolphin sighting, or even a glimpse of a passing whale migrating south from September to November. Bermagui Bermagui offers visitors a myriad of things to do and places to go. Pristine beaches and lakes provide water activities from surfing to swimming, snorkelling, boating and canoeing. The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, the lower slopes of Gulaga became the site of much activity when gold was discovered in the 1860s. The village of Central Tilba was founded in 1895, when Sam Bate created a subdivision on his land and sold lots at auction.

Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. By the time mining ceased, the dairy industry was firmly established as the main source of income for the area. The village of Tilba Tilba, just a few kilometres south of Central Tilba, is protected by a National Heritage listing. Tilba Tilba is home to the magnificent Foxglove Spires, featuring one of Australia’s finest open gardens covering 3.5 acres. There is also a nursery on site. Tilba Tilba also has a

general store. The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by he National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. Central Tilba maintains its village atmosphere, and has become a centre for craftspeople and artisans, as well as ‘old-fashioned’ stores like the general store, lolly shop and toy shop. Shops with leatherwork, unusual clothing, cafes, antiques and giftware, as well as the pub, art studios, and the famous cheese factory are all located on Central Tilba’s main street.

Monthly Garden Advice The Plot Thickens Although we are well and truly into the vegetable growing season there are probably some of us out there who plan on establishing a new garden soon. Although in previous columns I have mentioned vegetable growing generally, it is now opportune to mention things to look out for in the actual construction of the garden. In selecting a site for the vegetable garden, a number of important factors need to be considered before the actual construction commences. Vegetables need sun and lots of it, so it's very important to locate the garden in a position that gives the site as much sun as possible. If actual hours of direct sunlight is a problem, then select a site that is getting morning sun and at least six hours of it. If there has to be shade, then late afternoon shade is better than morning shade. Narooma • Bodalla • Moruya Narooma is one of the most scenic towns on the Far South Coast, sitting between the ocean and the startling blue-green waters of Wagonga Inlet. Amazing New Maze opens at The Original Gold Rush Colony Run the Maze! Stroll the Maze and read the Panels! Puzzle out the Maze Panels! Win a Prize doing the Maze Crossword! The Original Gold Rush Colony in Mogo 10km south of Batemans Bay has just opened this new exciting activity. The Maze is fun for young and old at different levels. The Original Gold Rush Colony received support from the NSW Government, through Destination NSW’s 2011/12 Regional Tourism Product Development Program. The $25,000 government grant was to build a Palisade Timber Maze as an added

tourist attraction to the already popular Heritage and Culture Educational Tourism facility. The maze is built of palisade timber with gravel paths, and covers 500sqm. The maze will be used as an educational resource for Australiana, the Gold Rush, the Eureka Rebellion and give participants a feeling of being in a stockade. Staff and owners worked long hours to ensure that the maze is open for the summer season, to delight visitors and locals alike. The Official opening of the maze is scheduled to take place on December 3rd, the anniversary of the Eureka Stockade, with the panels reflecting

that historical event. Panels are currently based on the Gold Rush Theme for general use. The questions and answers on the panels can be personalised for functions from birthdays through to trivia, scavenger hunts, team building and educational programs held in the grounds of The Original Gold Rush Colony and the Diggers Rest Tavern. Maze Entry and Mini Train rides on Olga are independent of entry to The Original Gold Rush Colony. Combined Theme Park entry, maze and train tickets receive a discount.
