The Far South Coast is one of NSW's best spots to go whale watching, with humpbacks and southern right whales, dwarf minkes, and even the occasional orca and blue whale hugging the coast as they migrate south. Following are tour operators from Eden to Narooma who can get you out amongst the whales. Starting in the south at Eden is Cat Balou, celebrating their 23rd whale watching season this year. This makes owners Gordon and Ros Butt the most experienced whale watching operators in NSW. See page 5 for details on Cat Balou's whale watching cruises. Next port of call is Merimbula where you'll find Headland Fishing Charters and Merimbula Marina. Locals Joe and Andrew Gatt of Headland Fishing Charters offer whale watching cruises on their boat Jadele 11, which carries 12 passengers plus Joe and Andrew. Plenty of personal attention is guaranteed as you cruise Merimbula Bay and beyond tracking whales. See page 13

watching. Check out Merimbula Marina's great whale watching blog - details page 3. Island Charters Narooma offer whale watching cruises from September to November for those further north. From Narooma it's a quick trip out to spot whales as they migrate south - see below.

Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn.

Top Lake, Merimbula Š Paul Callaghan

Merimbula Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafes, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St has information and displays about the town’s early European history. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen.

10

www.monthlyimag.com.au

www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkeling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close. Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafes with great coffee. Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme. For a musical night out, there are lots of venues in Merimbula that offer live music; especially during the annual Jazz Festival in June. Whales migrate past Merimbula from September to November each year, feeding and frolicking in the Bay, making it easy to whale watch from on board a boat or from the beach.

Footprint Theatre presents Arsenic And Old Lace Elderberry wine anybody? Angie Dobson and Penny Hunt play the Brewster sisters Abby and Martha in Footprint Theatre’s latest production, the farcical black comedy Arsenic and Old Lace. The spinsters’ nephew Mortimer Brewster (played by Andrew Gray) discovers that his dear sweet aunts who run a boarding house have been poisoning lonely old men who apply to be guests in their establishment. The bodies are buried in the cellar where their mad brother Teddy has

been digging what he believes is the Panama Canal. The plot thickens when another mad brother, Jonathon (Matthew Watters) a homicidal maniac who is on the run from the law, arrives at the boarding house with his doctor, Dr Einstein. Following several appearances as an actor in earlier Footprint Theatre productions such as Banjo and On Our Selection, Karl Auer makes his directorial debut with this play. The cast includes seasoned actors such Andrew Gray, Angie Dobson, Robert Buck, Jesse Tankard and Martin McGee, as well as Footprint newcomers Matthew Watter and Michael Ubrihien. The talent is drawn from across the Bega Valley Shire. Tickle your funny bone whilst stimulating your intellect with a play that explores many complex themes around family, religion, sanity and a whole lot more. Arsenic and Old Lace runs from November 23rd to 1st of December at Pambula Town Hall. For more details check out footprinttheatre.org.au Left: Angie Dobson and Penny Hunt in rehearsals for their roles as Abby and Martha Brewster in Arsenic and Old Lace.

Spring antics at Potoroo Palace Find out about the spring antics of our native neighbours at Potoroo Palace Native Animal Sanctuary, just north of Merimbula. Learn about 'echidna trains' and meet Priscilla. But remember, there's only one direction to pat an echidna! Or young Sapphire, the southern koala, who's taught herself leaping and other mischievous tricks. She's carving love hearts for Evo, the koala next door. He's older, smaller, and a little sleepier, but equally fond of keeper cuddles and meeting people for pats and 'oohs' and 'aahs'. The pythons and dragons are out, the dingoes are howling. Phoebe the flying fox is trying to learn not to steal banana pieces from her friends' mouths, and hide them all in her cheeks, trying to look innocent (while chewing). John Paul Young & The Allstar Band play Club Sapphire As part of their 40th anniversary tour, Australian music icon John Paul Young & The Allstar Band will be dropping in to Club Sapphire on November 17th. One of Australia's most popular artists of the 70s, John Paul Young has cemented his place in music history with a string of hits, including The Love Game, I Hate The Music, I Wanna Do It With You, Standing In The Rain and the big hit from Strictly Ballroom, Love is In the Air. After performing the role of Annas 700 times in the rock musical Jesus Christ Superstar, JPY became even more popular after he performed Yesterday’s

Hero on Countdown. He went on to became a Countdown regular, both as guest and performer, his easy-going boyish personality making him a favourite with fans. Love Is In The Air was also a huge hit internationally, leading to television performances on Britain’s ‘Top Of The Pops’ and in the USA. With a special 40th Anniversary repackaging of the album I Hate The Music, JPY is sure to win over a whole new audience while delighting the already converted. John Paul Young will be performing all of his greatest hits spanning his

impressive 40 year career at Club Sapphire, where he will prove he is far from Yesterday’s Hero, but an enduring presence in the soundtrack of Australia for the last four decades. Tickets are on sale now from Club Saphire for $37.50. Doors open 8.30pm.

Tathra With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples. Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. Swimming at Tathra’s patrolled beach (summer only) may provide the added bonus of a dolphin sighting, or even a glimpse of a passing whale migrating south from September to November. Bushwalking, kayaking, mountain-

www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au biking, snorkelling and surfing are all popular around Tathra. There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground, both located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club. An easy 3km walking & cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well. Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at

Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary. Tathra also has great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafes and restaurants.

The picturesque historic village of Cobargo is more than a working village; it's a creative, vibrant place that reflects the diverse, talented locals. Saturday mornings see Cobargo come alive with the Laneway and beyond markets. Ello's Train Cafe, in the middle of the village, is home to the railway reading room. You can sit in the midst of a train and read through an extensive collection of books and magazines all about trains.

Food lovers can treat themselves at the newest cafe Chalk and Cheese. Life's Little Pleasures gift shop has now expanded into bigger premises also offering health and wellbeing treatments. Drop into Well Thumbed Books if you're looking for a good read. Cobargo still has it's old favourites like the butchers and newsagents, the wonderful leather shop, our unique Bangles Pottery shop - you may catch our local potter at work.

South Coast Leather Rogue's Gallery South Coast Leather, built in 1913, occupies what was originally one of Cobargo's butcher shops and still utilises the original chopping block as one of its display items. An interesting array of ancient battered hats sit overhead from an Akubra Hat competition. The winning hat was 46 years old. The previous owners still visit their old hats, affectionately known as "the Rogue's gallery". South Coast Leather are stockists of quality leathergoods from keyrings to luggage and everything in between in a variety of leathers, textures and colours.

Legendary gear from R.M. Williams, Akubra and Drizabone compliment the leathergoods and Australian Made is proudly promoted in the shop. Fashion hats, scarves, shoes and bags can be found in the extensive range and all just a little bit fabulous. Classic leather belts are hand-made on the premises. You can also pick up a brochure for the Cobargo Historic Village Walk, another reason to visit. Tilba

www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au

The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, the lower slopes of Gulaga became the site of much activity when gold was discovered in the 1860s. The village of Central Tilba was founded in 1895, when Sam Bate created a subdivision on his land and sold lots at auction.

Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. By the time mining ceased, the dairy industry was firmly established as the main source of income for the area. The village of Tilba Tilba, just a few kilometres south of Central Tilba, is protected by a National Heritage listing. Tilba Tilba is home to the magnificent Foxglove Spires, featuring one of Australia’s finest open gardens covering 3.5 acres. There is also a cafe, giftware, antiques and a nursery on

site. Tilba Tilba also has a general store. The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by he National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. Central Tilba maintains its village atmosphere, and has become a centre for craftspeople and artisans, as well as ‘old-fashioned’ stores like the general store, lolly shop and toy shop. Shops with leatherwork, unusual clothing, cafes, antiques and giftware, as well as the pub, art studios, and the famous cheese factory are all located on Central Tilba’s main street.

Tilba Living History

Gulaga Gallery & Bookstore HEMP CLOTHES to make a skinny bloke handsome, HIP CLOTHES to make a fat lady sing.... ENLIGHTENING BOOKS and CARDS that are awesome, HANDCRAFTED JEWELLERY and that SPECIAL THING! Gulaga Gallery and Bookstore is named after beautiful Gulaga Mountain which towers up behind Tilba. It was built at the end of the 19th Century from local eucalyptus timbers, and since 1991, this varied and enchanting shop has been owned by Shanti and Sol Ramana-Clarke. Sol has developed a unique style of jewellery using sterling silver and goldfilled wire to mount a huge variety of semi-precious stones. He might suggest you “pick a stone that jumps out at you” and watch him mount it into a pendant, ring ...or whatever... Sol also produced the widely acclaimed documentary film “The Hemp Solution - For A Sustainable Future”, so naturally you’ll find a full range of environmentally friendly hemp clothes, hemp seed oil and cosmetics. Shanti’s passion for colour and style is reflected in the varied range of women's clothing. Shanti and Sol’s love of universal spirituality is expressed in their range of interesting and insightful books & DVD’s, cards, and inspirational music. You may also be treated to the uplifting sound of Shanti and Sol’s own musical CD "Open To The Light". Most of all, just enjoy the warm and friendly atmosphere! Clyde River, Batemans Bay © Paul Callaghan

Batemans Bay

www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au

Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820s, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income over the past two hundred years. The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia. Now a thriving regional centre and major tourist destination, people come to Batemans Bay from all over Australia for its natural beauty. Situated on the banks of the magnificent Clyde River, water is deeply ingrained in the culture of ‘the Bay’. Swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, surfing and diving are all within easy reach of town. The Batemans Marine Park ensures that the coastal environment is protected for future generations. November is the last month of the whale-watching season, and they

last chance to see these magnificent creatures as they head south on their annual migration to enjoy the Antarctic summer. There are several whale-watching charter operators in and around Batemans Bay, or you can try land-based whale watching. Hire a boat, kayak or a houseboat to explore the spectacular upper reaches of the Clyde River. Batemans Bay is a great destination for families, with its array of outdoor activities and attractions such as minigolf, a cinema, animal park, tennis and a carnival in summer. There are lots of great national parks to explore within easy driving distance. Batemans Bay has a fantastic 27 hole championship golf course, and there are plenty of other courses to play within easy driving distance. The Bay is famous for its Clyde River oysters, and there are plenty of cafes, restaurants, clubs and hotels offering
