Tilba Easter Festival, Saturday 19th April
From the Editor
www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au
April Welcome to April on the Far South Coast - it's always a big month with Easter and school holidays, and 2014 is no different. It kicks off with the Bay Theatre Players production of 'Allo 'Allo; follow the trials and tribulations of cafe owner René Artois as he has to deal with the Germans and four women vying for his attention. Details are on page 31. The fabulous Narooma Oyster Festival is on the 5th - 6th April, with fresh oysters from some of the world's most environmentally sustainable oyster growing regions, tours, cooking demonstrations, oyster opening competition and much, much more. Details on pages 2 and 24. The Four Winds Festival is back in 2014, with Richard Tognetti plus three other international virtuosi performing in the truly spectacular location near Bermagui. There's also a free concert in Bermagui featuring local performers. See page 21 for more information.
Don't miss the wonderful Tilba Festival on Easter Saturday; it's a real celebration of community with live music, street performers, local produce and traditional games like cheese rolling - yes, cheese rolling! See page 19 for more details. The fun continues on Easter Saturday with the Tathra Moonlight Cinema - who doesn't want to watch movies under the stars? Read all about it on page 18. Head to Magic Mountain on Easter Sunday for their Easter Fair - the kids will have a great time with the Easter Egg scramble, Easter Egg balloon pop and a special visitor - details on page 13. Finally there's the National Parks & Wildlife Service's Discovery Program in April - see page 11 for details. Phew - that's a lot to do! Enjoy!

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century.
2
For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment.

Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. In 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation at the Mount Gahan site. Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses. Pambula today has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops and pubs. It's a great place to shop for something a bit different. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park.
Pambula Beach has an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth is great for families. Heading south toward Eden, turn left off the Highway to Pambula Lake, where there’s several oyster growers selling fresh Pambula Lake oysters, including Broadwater Oysters.

Magic Mountain, Merimbula
Merimbula Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafes, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access.

Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme. There are several Clubs, bars and the pub offering live music. Whales migrate past Merimbula from September to November each year, feeding and frolicking in the Bay, making it easy to whale watch from on board a boat or from the beach.

Bega is the business and administrative heart of the Bega Valley. It is also a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and forests hugging the escarpment. Views of Mumbulla Mountain to the north and the escarpment to the west are best appreciated from the Lookout, located just 3 kilometres north of town on the Princes Highway.

In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products, exporting millions of dollars worth of product every year. A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for all visitors to the region. The Heritage Centre has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900s, and provides an insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products. The Heritage Centre is also home to the Bega Tourist Information Centre, which provides information about
attractions throughout the region. Bega has a thriving arts community with its own Regional Gallery which hosts several major exhibitions each year, as well as the artist-run Spiral Gallery.

Built in 1862, the Wharf was built from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company and operated until 1952. Swimming at Tathra’s patrolled beach (summer only) may provide the added bonus of a dolphin sighting, and passing whales, heading south on their migration, are frequently seen from September to November. There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl and playground located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club. An easy 3km walking and cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well. Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary.

Annual Tilba Easter Festival
Easter Saturday 19th April 2014 9am to 5pm
The Tilba Easter Festival is an amazing day of entertainment and frivolity for the whole family. This year the festival is to be held in the main street of the historic town of Central Tilba Easter Saturday on the 19th April from 9am until 5pm. The Festival will be opened by none other than our local identity Paul West from the Australian River Cottage program. The Tilba Easter Festival bans the car for a day while families of locals and visitors alike fill Bate Street from end to end. Buskers, vibrant street stalls, clowns and musicians ensure that young and old are guaranteed to be entertained throughout the day. There is something new to see or do every 10 metres along the street. Entertainment in the form of the ever
popular Reptile Awareness show, fun activities for kids and live music fill four stages. This year the Tilba Festival is showcasing local produce with local growers bringing their produce and knowledge directly to the consumer. The famous Barabaroo award winning meats will be in attendance. There will be street games bringing together kids (both big and small) where people can try their prowess in the games of yesteryear. There will be the bushies boot throw, the egg toss and the cheese roll are open to all comers and are always a great laugh. Street events this year include wandering minstrels and magic shows. Local blacksmiths provide an insight into their craft with demonstrations. Face
painting for kids, jumping castle, CWA, Marine rescue, animal welfare league will all be there. The list of musicians includes Brigid Murane, Damon Davies, DJ Gosper Duo, The Chris Harlan Blues Band, Tommy M and the Master funk sounds and the Jazz Pack to name a few. Live music fills four stages from 9 am until 5 pm. Entry for the day is a $10 donation and visitors are reminded that Central Tilba does not have any ATM facilities. Ample parking is available with a free shuttle bus running from the car park to the entry gates. Put the date in your diary now and bring the family to join in the magic of the Tilba Easter festival.

Moruya Traditionally home to two indigenous tribes, the Walbanga and the BrinjaYuin, the name Moruya is derived from the word, mherroyah, meaning "home of the black swan". Black swans still feature in Moruya, frequently seen in the lakes and rivers around town. European settlement began in the 1820s, with the township gazetted in 1851. Moruya's granite quarries were famous for supplying the rock used in the piers of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. From 1925 to 1932, the Harbour Bridge works saw 250 stonemasons employed and relocated to Moruya by the contractor to produce 18,000 cubic metres of dimension stone for the bridge pylons, 173,000 blocks, and 200,000 yards of crushed stone that was used as aggregate for concrete. Moruya granite was also used for Sydney’s Post Office, the Bank of NSW, the Cenotaph in Martin Place and the base of the Captain Cook statue in

The first bridge across the Moruya River was erected in 1876, although frequent flooding meant new bridges had to be erected in 1900 and 1945 and, most recently, in 1966. World War 11 must have seemed a long way from Moruya to begin with, but as the war progressed, it had a direct impact on the town. The Moruya aerodrome became an advanced operational base, and in 1942 a trawler was attacked by the Japanese offshore between Moruya and Batemans Bay. On 25 December 1944 the US liberty ship SS Robert J. Walker was torpedoed off Moruya by the German submarine U-862. It sank the next day between Moruya and Bega, with 2 people dying and 67 survivors. These days, Moruya is known for its beautifully preserved heritage buildings and streetscapes, as well as the large, intricately carved wooden
poles that are dotted along the footpath of the main street. Fantastic cafes, restaurants and pubs can also be found in this bustling little country town that has lots to offer.

To experience what the town was like during the boom, a visit to the Original Gold Rush Colony is a must. Located in a natural Australian bush setting on 4.5ha, the Original Gold Rsuh Colony, formerly known as Old Mogo Town, is a great place to step back in time. After taking out the award for Cultural and Heritage Tourism at the South Coast Regional Tourism Awards in 2008, 2009 and 2010, in 2011 the Original Gold Rush Colony won the Heritage and Cultural Tourism - Hall of Fame award. Mogo is now famous for its great range of specialty stores, housed in replica nineteenth century timber buildings. There are potteries, galleries, antique stores, bookshop and coffee shops, many of which specialise in unusual and interesting items. Mogo is the perfect place to spend time browsing for something a little bit different.
Also in Mogo is the internationally recognised Mogo Zoo. Providing world standard facilities for over 200 animals of more than 39 rare and exotic species, Mogo Zoo is committed to the survival of endangered species, including the rare white lions of ‘Timbavati’. Mogo Zoo won the Tourist Attraction category and the People's Choice Award at the 2012 South Coast Regional Tourism Awards. Congratulations to the Original Gold Rush Colony and Mogo Zoo on their recent awards - they certainly did Mogo proud.

Batemans Bay Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820s, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income over the past 200 years. The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia. Now a thriving regional centre and major tourist destination, people come to Batemans Bay from all over Australia for its natural beauty. 'Allo 'Allo - it's 'Allo 'Allo live on stage Set during World War II, 'Allo 'Allo! tells the story of René Artois, a French café owner in the German occupied village of Nouvion. The Germans have stolen Van Klomp’s priceless painting (colloquially known as The Fallen Madonna with the Big Boobies). The commandant, the Gestapo, an Italian War Hero, Hitler and Rene himself all see the painting as their superannuation. Forgeries and duplicity abound. René has four women vying for his attentions as well as the seemingly gay German Lieutenant Gruber flirting
with him. The two paintings on canvas used in the Bay Theatre Players production are originals donated by artist June Lotzof, and are prizes in a raffle to be held at the end of the season. Tickets are available from Bargain Box Fabrics, 43 Orient St Batemans Bay. Phone 4472 5984 For more information, visit www.baytheatreplayers.org.au The Bay Theatre Players second production in the 2014 season is the musical 'Annie', to be directed by Candy Burgess.
