George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to

The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage
of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. Pambula’s historic past is still very much in evidence, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses. Pambula now has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, retailers, pubs, a wine bar selling locally made wines and local produce, a bakery, deli, organic and bulk food shop and even an oldfashioned milkbar.

Pambula Beach has an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth, with a playground and barbecue.

Explore Brogo Dam by canoe Autumn is a great time to explore the inland waterways of the Far South Coast - the days are fine, the water is still warm and it's not too busy. One of the best locations to go canoeing is the Brogo Dam, with its extensive catchment running back into the magnificent Brogo Wilderness area. The waterways are pristine, and the peaceful backwaters are a haven for local native bird life and fauna - sea eagles, swooping azure kingfishers, water dragons, goannas and shy echidnas have all been observed on and around the Dam. To really explore the beauty of the Brogo Dam and Brogo Wilderness, hire a fully equipped canoe from Dave and Sue at Brogo Wilderness Canoes. Their canoes are safe, stable 'Canadians', and all safety gear, maps and instructions are provided. For tranquillity and beauty it’s hard to beat - you can explore forest gullies, swim, bring a picnic lunch and stop wherever you desire. A 2 - 3 person canoe with all safety gear costs just $25 per person for a half day, with children half price. You'll find more information at www.brogocanoes.com.au For bookings contact Dave or Sue on (02) 6492 7328.
Lakeview Hotel wins Good Pub Food award
Once again the Lakeview Hotel in Merimbula has made it into the Sydney Morning Herald's Good Pub Food Guide. Only two pubs on the entire South Coast made it onto the 2014 final list, with the Lakeview taking out a coveted Two Schooner award. Deciding on finalists involved visiting more than 500 pubs across New South Wales, with 400 reviews written and scores allocated. These scores became the basis for awarding either a one, two or three Schooner award. The Lakeview received its Two Schooner award after being judged on its food, service, ambience and feelgood vibe. With fantastic views over Merimbula Lake, the Hotel is perfect for enjoying a meal with friends and family. The Lakeview's restaurant is open daily for lunch and dinner, with counter meals also available in the Bar. The food is of a higher standard than your average pub meal, as reflected by its Two Schooner win. So for a meal as good as anything you'll find in Sydney or the regions, make a reservation at the Lakeview. For bookings or more information, phone 02) 6495 1202 or go to www.merimbulalakeview.com.au

South Coast Leather
www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au The town was once known as Wattletown because from the 1860s, wattle bark was stripped from wattle trees and used in the tanning industry in Sydney and Melbourne. The industry ceased in 1964. Today, Cobargo is a creative, vibrant place reflecting the diversity and talents of those who live and work in the district. Cobargo combines the skills and craft of a working village with a genuinely historic past, its streetscape featuring many turn of the century buildings. With galleries, cafes and established businesses like South Coast Leather and the unique Bangles Pottery shop, Cobargo is a great little village to spend some time wandering about in. Saturday mornings in particular see Cobargo come alive with the fantastic Laneway markets. Browse fresh produce, seedlings, herbs, local crafts, craft supplies and other locally made goodies. There's also trashy treasures and treasured trash for the bargain hunters and the odd busker. Every February Cobargo becomes a very busy little village, with the
Cobargo Show followed by the Cobargo Folk Festival. The Show is a great country show, with horses, cattle, chickens, pavilion exhibits as well as bull riding, highflying motor bikes and dog high jump. Spread over two days, is supported by a hard-working team of volunteers. The Cobargo Show celebrated its 118th birthday in 2015 and looks set to continue for a while yet. The Cobargo Folk Festival takes over the showground at the end of February and attracts international artists and local performers alike. With a wide range of musical styles represented as well as dance, forums, comedy, bush poetry and more, the Cobargo Folk Festival attracts thousands of people for good reason - it's a fantastic weekend! Montreal Goldfield celebrates 10th anniversary To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Montreal Goldfield community project, the Heritage Centre is hosting its inaugural sculpture exhibition. This exhibition is a new undertaking for the Management Committee and is relevant to local history in many ways. The exhibition "Rust in the Blood" featuring the works of well known local and visiting artists, is a fitting way to remember the past, and showcase today's creations for the future. The exhibition is open from 10am 5pm from 28 March to 19 April. Join a tour round the goldfield before or after enjoying the great works on
display. A film is also available that tells the Montreal story. Tours leave from the Goldfield car park daily at 2pm and take about an hour and cost $5pp or $20 per family. Entry is by guided tour only. Montreal Goldfield is being preserved by not-for-profit ‘grey power’ volunteers. As a virtually intact 1880s alluvial goldfield, its preservation is important to conserve the past for future generations. The site is 7km north of Bermagui on the Wallaga Lake Road. For further information contact Judi on 6493 4645 or the Bermagui Visitor Information Centre 6493 3054.

Tilba Living History
Central Tilba and Tilba Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, gold was discovered on the lower slopes of Gulaga in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by the National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. The village has become a centre for crafts people and artisans, as well as the famous Bates General Store and ABC Cheese Factory, located on Central Tilba’s main street.

ABC Cheese Factory
www.monthlyimag.com.au
The ABC Cheese Factory is located in the heart of historical Central Tilba and is the home of Cheese on the South Coast of NSW. The ABC Cheese Factory was established in 1891 and was the first Cheese Co-op in NSW. Today the ABC Cheese Factory is owned by local dairy farmers Erica and Nic Dibden who bottle their unhomogenised milk onsite and make cheese. Their milk and cheese can be purchased at the Factory or at many retail outlets across the South Coast of NSW. Come and watch cheese being made, milk being bottled or come and sample some of their delicious products. Cheese tastings are available at all times, as are tastings and sales of a large range of local South Coast honeys. As well as cheese and honey, the ABC Cheese Factory also features a wide range of jams and preserves,
local produce, regional guides and books, souvenirs, gifts, ice-cream and other refreshments – including freshly ground and brewed Ona Coffee. Annual Tilba Easter Festival Easter Saturday 4th April 9am to 5pm
The Easter highlight on the Eurobodalla’s Nature Coast is the Tilba Easter Festival. As unique as the village itself, the Tilba Easter Festival has entertainment and activities to suit all tastes, including Town Criers, hilarious street games with prizes, live music on 4 different stages, roaming street performers and a fabulous parade. Of course, as Tilba is home to River Cottage Australia, the Producers Hall will be showcasing local produce, market stalls and delicious food. This all happens in the magical setting of Central Tilba’s main street and its 100 year old, colourful weather board buildings. The entire village and surrounding lush volcanic farmland
rolling down to the ocean, have been protected by the National Trust. Beautiful Mt Dromedary or “Gulaga - the Mother Mountain”, towers up 800 metres behind the village, and is widely known for its pristine rain forests and aboriginal sacred sites. Easter Saturday is the one day each year when Bate Street is closed to traffic and open to a huge array of culture and festivities. A modest donation ($10-adults, Free Entry for kids 2-16) covers all the entertainment, all day long! The festival is proud to be a volunteer non-profit community project, completely free of corporate sponsorship, and dedicated to a day of fun for everyone
who attends. There will be stilt walkers, buskers, street theatre, a continuous reptile awareness show, jumping castles, airbrush tattoos and face painting. Don’t forget to try your hand at the new Cheese Rolling Competition, the treacherous Egg Throwing Championship, the Bushies Boot Throwing Contest or one of the other many games and activities. To learn more about the events and accommodation visit www.tilba.com.au Tilba warmly welcomes you to join in the festivities and soak up some of Tilba’s special magic...rain or shine , see you there!

Narooma Oyster Festival, 5-6 April
Narooma • Moruya Narooma is one of the most scenic towns on the Far South Coast, sitting between the ocean and the startling blue-green waters of Wagonga Inlet, and it's also the perfect place for a relaxed coastal holiday. The town manages to retain a '1950s fishing village' vibe but modernised, with great shops, cafes and restaurants. It's a fantastic place for families, with a beach that's patrolled in summer, bike tracks and lots of waterways to explore or fish in. With a choice of flat stretches or hills, there are lots of places to walk around town and take in the spectacular views over the Inlet, the mountains and the ocean. Montague Island is located just offshore from Narooma and is a truly unique spot to visit. Twice voted as Tourism Australia’s top eco-tourism destination, you can take a National
Parks & Wildlife Service tour of the island covering its heritage-listed buildings, wildlife and history, or stay for a few nights in one of the Lighthouse Keeper's cottages. The island is home to the largest fur seal colony on the NSW coast, as well as being a breeding ground for 12,000 little penguins who come ashore at dusk after feeding at sea. Narooma is also renowned for its spectacular public golf course, ranked as one of the best in Australia. If you're looking for more leisurely pursuits, there are plenty of great cafes and restaurants to try, as well as shops to explore. The township of Moruya, north of Narooma, has beautifully preserved heritage buildings and streetscapes and is a great place to explore. It’s famous for supplying the granite used in the piers of the Sydney

Harbour Bridge, as well as Sydney’s Post Office, the Bank of NSW and the Cenotaph in Martin Place. These days however, Moruya is known for the large, intricately carved wooden poles that are dotted along the footpath of the main street. Fantastic cafes, restaurants and pubs with live music can also be found in this bustling little country town that has lots to offer.
What to See & Do Take a trip to Montague Island Nature Reserve to watch wildlife Explore Wagonga Inlet by boat or kayak Follow the Mill Bay boardwalk and look out for the magnificent stingrays Enjoy a round of golf Stroll or ride your bike through Moruya's Riverside Park Indulge in some retail therapy in Moruya's many specialty shops Take a drive alongside the beautiful Moruya River

Shaun Gladwell’s war art focuses on ordinary soldiers in harsh landscapes, on their physique, their inner world, and the training and rituals that shape them. The subjects depicted here, whether on military bases in Afghanistan, the Middle East or Australia, lie at the centre of the artist’s meditations on the role of technology in modern war and the nature of sacrifice and death. Gladwell’s work is a significant contribution to a tradition of official war art that began during the First World War. His use of the video medium is the first in the history of the official war art scheme..

To experience what the town was like during the boom, a visit to the Original Gold Rush Colony is a must. Located in a natural Australian bush setting on 4.5ha, the Original Gold Rsuh Colony, formerly known as Old Mogo Town, is a great place to step back in time. After taking out the award for Cultural and Heritage Tourism at the South Coast Regional Tourism Awards in 2008, 2009 and 2010, in 2011 the Original Gold Rush Colony won the Heritage and Cultural Tourism - Hall of Fame award. Mogo is now famous for its great range of specialty stores, housed in replica nineteenth century timber buildings. There are potteries, galleries, antique stores, bookshop and coffee shops, many of which specialise in unusual and interesting items. Mogo is the perfect place to spend time browsing for something a little bit different.
Also in Mogo is the internationally recognised Mogo Zoo. Providing world standard facilities for over 200 animals of more than 39 rare and exotic species, Mogo Zoo is committed to the survival of endangered species, including the rare white lions of ‘Timbavati’. Mogo Zoo won the Tourist Attraction category and the People's Choice Award at the 2012 South Coast Regional Tourism Awards.
