August Welcome to the August edition of the Far South Coast Monthly Imag. As I write, the frost is forming outside on the grass (but hopefully not too high up the trees - that's when you know it's really cold!) which means it's going to be a beautiful day tomorrow. That's not unusual on the coast; during the day it's sometimes warm enough to strip down to a t-shirt. That makes it wonderful for outdoor activities - bushwalking, bike-riding, kayaking, and of course, shopping. This month on the coast there's plenty of events to enjoy. In the south, Green Cape Lighthouse is celebrating its 130th birthday with a range of special events - details are on page 13. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre is celebrating National Science Week with plenty of hands-on
Contents activities for all ages and displays from local groups. You'll find more information on page 6. You don't have to be a revhead to enjoy the South Coast Nationals at Moruya on August 24th and 25th. Some of Australia's best show vehicles will be on display - everything from vintage cars to motorbikes and trucks, plus a kids activity centre. You'll find lots of information on pages 26 and 27. The Canberra region is celebrating winter too with the Fireside Festival, run throughout August by members of the Poachers Way. The Fireside Festival is all about curling up by the fire with delicious food and wine and good friends. Details on pages 2 and 31. Enjoy your stay on the coast, and don't forget to watch out for the wildlife on the roads, even when you're in town.

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century.

For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment.

‘Strike’ tells the tale of Eden's tuna fishing industry
EDEN
tuna weighing up to 50 pounds (22.6 kg). The season saw 1,000 tons of southern bluefin tuna landed at port and was mostly caught by fishermen using improvised equipment and learning the habits of the fish as they went. On 24 September 1950, the American owned tuna clipper Senibua (with its own spotting aircraft) arrived in Sydney and began to prepare for experimental pole fishing for tuna in Australian waters. On its first cruise in October in waters near Jervis Bay, Senibua poled 6 tons of southern bluefin in 40 minutes. The visit by the clipper was seen as an opportune time for Australian fishermen to learn tuna poling methods from experienced crews, assess tuna poling against purse seine netting, and explore the commercial viability of Australian tuna resources. Tuna poling involved the ‘chumming’ of waters, where either dead or live bait was thrown into the school of tuna to create a feeding frenzy. While tuna were actively feeding, fishermen stood in racks attached to the sides of the fishing vessel, and cast long lines with barbless feather lures or live bait. The fish strike the lure and once hooked, fishermen haul their long fishing poles overhead where the fish dislodge during the change in tension of the swinging action. The line and lure is then cast out again as quickly

as possible to maximise the catch numbers while the feeding frenzy is at its peak. If fish proved too large for a single pole fisherman, the pole configuration changed to double and triple polers which allowed two or three men to haul in a single fish. In the early 1960s, experiments began on mechanical poling machines. While they had benefits, vessels still required crews to resolve mechanical and fish release failures and stow the catch. A dangerous occupation, fishermen have been lost when hauled overboard by large tuna, and entire crews of vessels have vanished in poor weather conditions. This exhibition examines the evolution of methods and equipment associated with tuna pole fishing, and pays tribute to the fishermen who worked in the physically, financially and emotionally demanding industry of tuna poling. Strike is open until 9th February 2014.

In 1949, Eden’s fishing industry faced economic ruin. The two main fishing species of barracouta and salmon failed to arrive along the coast, leaving local fishermen wondering what to do next. Tuna was the answer. Thousands of tons of tuna could be found close to shore during the annual migration to spawning grounds off Tasmania. Fishermen at Bermagui claimed there were so many that they ‘could walk from their boats to the shore on the fishes’ backs’. Up until then, there was no market for Australian caught tuna either in Australia or overseas. With the reduced catch of salmon and barracouta the fishermen turned to tuna as a means to make their way clear of the poor season. Mostly caught by trolling up to seven lines, around 300, 000 pounds (136 kg) of tuna was caught in the first four weeks. Most of the tuna weighed around 20 pounds (just under 10 kg). Further out to sea, Commonwealth fisheries officers located schools of

Pambula The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830's, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. In 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation at the Mount Gahan site. Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic

buildings and farmhouses. Pambula today has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops and pubs. It's a great place to shop for something a bit different. At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a fantastic community conservation and heritage project that has transformed this part of Pambula over the past 10 years. Covering former farmland, areas of saltmarsh, billabongs and the former Pambula Racecourse, the area has been extensively re-planted and has great walking and cycling tracks. The old race track is a great spot for the kids to cycle around, with the centre of the track often inhabited by kangaroos. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park. Pambula Beach has an excellent
swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth is great for families. Heading south toward Eden turn off the Highway to Pambula Lake, where there’s a boat ramp for launching vessels. Several oyster growers sell fresh Pambula Lake oysters here too, including Broadwater Oysters.

At the southern end of Pambula is the project known as Panboola, extending from the edge of town to the Pambula River. Panboola, the Aboriginal name for the area, covers 77 hectares and is comprised of land that was previously privately owned, and sections of the Old Pambula Race course. It is a diverse esturine and freshwater wetland comprising billabongs, saline areas, a tidal channel, mud flats, mangroves and saltmarsh. The wetlands provide a final filter for the town's storm water and floodplain runoff before entering the Pambula Lake, and at times are dry. They provide important breeding and nursery areas for a large range of animals including birds, fish and invertebrates. By protecting and restoring habitat for native wildlife, the whole area is being rehabilitated as a wetland for the purpose of nature conservation. Planted corridors have been established (and protected by fencing) to link existing plantings at the front (north) of the site to the Pambula River in the south. A series of walking tracks takes visitors through a range of vegetation types, including saltmarsh, billabongs and the Pambula River. Areas of farmland are still used for
grazing, with income generated assisting with recurring costs. Panboola offers many recreational options, including bird-watching, picnicking, cycling, walking or just sitting and enjoying the view. Picnic tables and seats have been installed in Tips Billabong and the Waterbird Sanctuary making outdoor lunches easy, or just bring a picnic blanket. Shade, shelter and seating are also available in the re-vamped Kiosk, located beside the former race course in the south east section. Panboola is a favourite spot with locals for walking their dogs, but please note that dogs must be kept on a leash, and are restricted to roads; they are not permitted to enter through any gates. The main entrance to Panboola is off Bullara St, next to Robert Smith’s. Just down from the entrance over the arched bridge is an information booth that has brochures providing information about Panboola. Panboola is a wonderful place to experience nature, history and culture, and it doesn’t cost a cent.

Massage Therapy at Beach Street Dental Centre, Merimbula
A new Remedial Massage and CranioSacral Therapy practice has recently opened at the Beach Street Dental Centre in Merimbula. Massage therapist Ania Pawliszak is qualified in remedial therapies like myofascial release, craniosacral therapy, deep tissue massage as well as gestalt counselling. Originally from Poland, Ania has lived for the last 10 years in Sydney, where she studied and worked in Osteopathic clinics. She uses a holistic approach to her practice, taking into consideration the physical, mental and emotional aspects of the entire individual. The aim of her treatments is not only to alleviate the discomfort of injuries, but more importantly to promote the body’s natural healing processes. Remedial massage is one of the most effective and readily available ways to prevent and treat muscle injury. It eases pain that originates in the muscular-skeletal system and also effects and promotes the health of internal organs, resulting in overall regeneration of all body tissues. Massage is known to be very beneficial for psychosomatic disorders, as it influences equally body and mind. Craniosacral Therapy is a hands-on healing technique that gently mobilizes and releases the craniosacral system, which includes head, the spine down to its tail end and the pelvis. It focuses on the movement of the cerebrospinal fluid and in particular the irregularities in the flow of this fluid. Myofascial Release Therapy uses hands-on manipulation of the entire body to promote healing and pain relief. Myofascial Release Therapy is said to release disruptions in the fascial network that link every organ and tissue in the body with every other part. Pressure on the bones, muscles, joints and nerves is relieved in the process, and balance is restored.

Celebrating Green Cape Lighthouse's 130th Birthday Auswide is holding an open weekend at Green Cape Lighthouse on August 17th - 18th to celebrate the 130th birthday of this beautiful heritage listed site. Celebrations will include a rare lighting of the historic light tower on Saturday evening, tours of the Light Tower and Keeper Residences and displays and activities from the Atlas of Life linking to Science Week. Food will be available across the weekend. On the Sunday a guided walk will occur from
Bittangabee Bay to Green Cape. The event coincides with the 16th Annual International Lighthouse/ Lightship weekend, which promotes awareness of lighthouses and lightships, and their need for preservation and restoration. The Green Cape Maritime Precinct was listed on the State Heritage Register earlier this year. The site is of state heritage significance as a notable lightstation in the 'highway of lights' erected along the NSW coastline during the late 19th century. Auswide works in collaboration with
NSW National Parks to manage the Green Cape Lighthouse facility and accommodation, as well as developing a guided Eco Tourism venture. Auswide CEO Kevin Stevens said "The August 17th -18th weekend celebration is the first step of an exciting development, and will improve awareness of heritage places, stories, skills and the benefits of its conservation. Working in partnership with the local Aboriginal community will further enrich the long standing association with the original owners of the land and the parallel history that exists in the precinct”.
Green Cape Lighthouse 130th Birthday Open Weekend on 17 - 18 August You are invited to join the Green Cape Lighthouse 130th birthday. The weekend will include tours, entertainment and functions with access to the lighthouse keeper’s residences. Tathra Wharf, Tathra © Paul Callaghan
Tathra With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples. Tathra’s famous historic Wharf was built in 1862 from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company. The location of the Wharf was chosen as it was the only suitable site between Merimbula and Bermagui, with protection from southerly winds provided by the adjacent headland. Passengers travelling to Sydney shared the journey with local produce, and often pigs on their way to market, hence the name "Pig and Whistle Fleet" in relation to the Tathra steamships. Because there was no railway line or decent roads, the steamer service was crucial to the region, and it continued to operate until 1954. The Tathra Wharf is now classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline. Swimming at Tathra’s patrolled beach (summer only) may provide the added bonus of a dolphin sighting, and passing whales, heading south on their
www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au
migration, are frequently seen from September to November. Bushwalking, kayaking, mountainbiking, snorkeling and surfing are all popular around Tathra. Tathra has become a centre for mountain biking on the Far South Coast, with an extensive network of trails, plus annual races like the MTB Enduro which attracts riders from around NSW and beyond. There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground, both located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club. An easy 3km walking and cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well. Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary. Tathra also has great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafés and restaurants.

Enjoy bushwalking in the Tathra Forest Wildlife Reserve From Tathra, head back toward Bega on the Snowy Mountains Highway, and turn right into Thompsons Drive. The car park on the right marks the start of the Tathra Forest Wildlife Reserve. This 60 hectare wildlife corridor provides habitat for a range of fauna species, including glossy black-
cockatoos, listed as a threatened species. These rare birds feed on the black sheoaks (Allocasuarina litoralis) found in coastal forests, and build nests in the hollows of old or dead trees. The Main Ridge Track passes through coastal rainforest down to a secluded wetland, with a variety of waterbirds,
frogs and water dragons. Continue through the Reserve until you reach Dilkerra Rd; follow this until you reach the famous Tathra beach, winner of the 2008 NSW Clean Beach Award. The walk takes about 45 minutes one way, and is graded as easy - medium. www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au

South Coast Field Days return to the Valley The far south coast of NSW is well-known as a fantastic holiday destination, but it's also known for its strong and growing community of people who strive to live sustainably, with a lighter environmental footprint. A driving force behind this community is SCPA - South East Producers, who have been promoting sustainable living and sustainable agriculture for the past 20 years. On September 21st -22nd SCPA (Sapphire Coast Producers Association) will be holding the South Coast Field Days, an event focussing on Sustainable Land Use and Living at the Bega Showground.
This event will provide inspiring talks, like Rohan Anderson of Whole Larder Love blog and book, fun workshops, an array of stalls selling local products and services - anything and everything to do with living a more sustainable life. For example, get your hands dirty building a cob oven, or a mud brick wall. Or try your hand at tying a fencing knot, look at rare chook breeds, or even enter our chook tractor building competition. See how good compost is made, how to make cheese or propagate plants, weave your own fabric or build a grey water management system. There will be activities for the kids, great food and
drink, and live music. Living more sustainably is easier than you think and more rewarding than you can ever imagine. It's on from 9am - 5pm and only $10 entry for adults or $15 for a weekend pass, with children under 16 free. For more information, go to: www.southcoastfielddays.com.au

Tilba Living History
Central Tilba and Tilba Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, gold was discovered on the lower slopes of Gulaga in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by the National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. The village has become a centre for crafts people and artisans, as well as ‘old-fashioned’ stores, and the famous Cheese Factory, all located on Central Tilba’s main street.

Moruya The township of Moruya also has beautifully preserved heritage buildings and streetscapes and is a great place to explore. It’s famous for supplying the granite used in the piers of the Sydney
Harbour Bridge, as well as Sydney’s Post Office, the Bank of NSW and the Cenotaph in Martin Place. These days however, Moruya is known for the large, intricately carved wooden poles that are dotted along

www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au To experience what the town was like during the boom, a visit to the Original Gold Rush Colony is a must. Located in a natural Australian bush setting on 4.5ha, the Original Gold Rsuh Colony, formerly known as Old Mogo Town, is a great place to step back in time. After taking out the award for Cultural and Heritage Tourism at the South Coast Regional Tourism Awards in 2008, 2009 and 2010, in 2011 the Original Gold Rush Colony won the Heritage and Cultural Tourism - Hall of Fame award. Mogo is now famous for its great range of specialty stores, housed in replica nineteenth century timber buildings. There are potteries, galleries, antique stores, bookshop and coffee shops, many of which specialise in unusual and interesting items. Mogo is the perfect place to spend time browsing for something a little bit different.
Also in Mogo is the internationally recognised Mogo Zoo. Providing world standard facilities for over 200 animals of more than 39 rare and exotic species, Mogo Zoo is committed to the survival of endangered species, including the rare white lions of ‘Timbavati’. Mogo Zoo also won their category at the 2011 South Coast Regional Tourism Awards; they won the award for the best Tourist Attraction. Congratulations to the Original Gold Rush Colony and Mogo Zoo on their recent awards - they certainly did Mogo proud.

Batemans Bay
www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au
Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820s, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income over the past 200 years. The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia. Now a thriving regional centre and major tourist destination, people come to Batemans Bay from all over Australia for its natural beauty. Situated on the banks of the magnificent Clyde River, water is deeply ingrained in the culture of ‘the Bay’. Swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, surfing and diving are all within easy reach of town. The Batemans Marine Park ensures that the coastal environment is protected for future generations. Hire a boat, kayak or a houseboat to explore the spectacular upper reaches of the Clyde River.
Batemans Bay is a great destination for families, with its array of outdoor activities and attractions such as minigolf, a cinema, animal park, tennis and a carnival in summer. There are lots of great national parks to explore within easy driving distance. Enjoy the scenery along the Kings Highway on the way to the historic town of Braidwood with its beautiful buildings and interesting shops. The Bay is famous for its Clyde River oysters, and there are plenty of cafes, restaurants, clubs and hotels offering local seafood on the menu. Follow the coastline south to explore beautiful beaches to be found at Malua Bay, Rosedale and Broulee. Head north to Durras Lake for a spot of fishing, bushwalk in the Murramarang National Park or say hello to the kangaroos at Pebbly Beach.

Enjoy the delights of winter at Canberra region's Fireside Festival With winter well and truly here, celebrate everything good about the colder weather at this year's Fireside Festival. Run throughout August by members of The Poacher’s Way - a collection of more than 20 venues in the Canberra region including wineries, restaurants and cafes, galleries and accommodation providers, this monthlong festival is all about curling up by the crackling fire, with some hearty winter cuisine while enjoying a glass of fine local red with loved ones and friends. The Fireside calendar is packed with events throughout the whole month. There is everything from degustation dinners to tapas, wine master classes, vintage tastings, live shows and
music, lantern cinema, horse rides, chocolate making demonstrations and art exhibitions.... and of course there will be gluhwein and endless hot chocolate. For food lovers, Fireside will feature the finest regional produce as restaurants and cafes source the freshest local ingredients (including truffles!) for their winter-inspired menus. Signature events include the Duck & Pinot Dinner at Grazing and Podfood’s Truffle Dinner. With Canberra cementing itself as home to some of the world’s top cool climate wines, the finest wines will be showcased at vineyards and cellar doors with Muscat tasting at Clonakilla Winery, tapas and Tempranillo at Mount Majura Vineyard and wine and chocolate tasting at Lerida Estate!
Live music will also be a feature, with local musicians playing at many of our venues to create the perfect backdrop for that long lazy lunch, or to dance the night away. Fireside also offers a unique opportunity to meet the region’s internationally acclaimed artists at their studios and galleries. Celebrate the re-opening of Old Saint Luke’s studio or head to Beaver Galleries or Bungendore Wood Works. With so much on offer, be sure to stay the night at Country Guesthouse Schonegg, the newly-opened East Hotel or the Gundaroo Colonial Inn. The Fireside Festival runs from 1-31 August 2013. A full list of venues and events is available at www.firesidefestival.com.au.
Kayaking & canoeing in the land of many waters Eurobodalla, land of many waters, is kayaking heaven with four major river systems, 20 lakes, 83 beaches and many islands along 130 km of Batemans Marine Park coastline. Listed below are some great flatwater and sea kayaking routes, courtesy of Eurobodalla Coast Tourism's Kayaking & Canoeing brochure. Take a more detailed map if you’re paddling somewhere new and without a guide, or pick up the brochure from one of the Eurobodalla Tourist Information Centres. Don't forget these important safety tips when you undertake any of the routes in this guide: Be Seen-Be Safe - Wear bright coloured clothing. Keep out of mooring areas (where other boats hide your presence). Water safety - Be aware of water safety rules and procedures with information from boating, marine or water sports organisations. Skills - Take a lesson if you need to. Instruction is available in Eurobodalla for all levels of kayaking skills.
Safety Vests - Always wear a life vest or life jacket. Helmets - Recommended for surf and white-water kayaking and when paddling near rough water and rocks. Paddle with someone If possible and tell someone where you will be going and when you expect to return. Maps - Take a map with you if you are not familiar with the route. Be aware of local conditions - Including currents, tides, water levels, shoreline variations and special hazards. Check the weather - Plus know about likely changes, such as offshore winds that may occur. Wind - Will slow down paddling and the extra effort required will tire you more quickly than normal. Also think about offshore winds – don’t get blown away from shore. Waves - Can be larger than expected and can change in size depending on water depth. Tides - Can be strong and having to paddle against the tide can make you tire quickly. Tidal flow against the wind direction will make waves steeper and water more choppy – plan your paddle according to tides. Surf - Check the conditions and stay away from swimmers. Emergency Contact.
