George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century.

2

For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment.

J R Logan: Community & Nation exhibition at Killer Whale Museum When you turn on a light switch in Eden, think of John Ronaldson Logan, the local entrepreneur who established the town’s first public electricity plant a century ago. By some he is also considered the father of the Snowy Hydro-Electric Scheme, so passionate was he about the scheme and its potential for Eden and the district, he expended a great deal of personal time and finances planning and campaigning the merits of the project. Eden Killer Whale Museum also stands as testimony to Logan’s contribution to Eden. He showed great foresight in having the skeleton of the killer

EDEN

whale known as Old Tom preserved, and in securing a permanent home for it, allowing visitors from around the world to continue to experience the retelling of Eden’s killer whales and whaling stories. Logan built the beautiful Edrom Lodge as his family's home on the shores of Twofold Bay, now a heritage listed property located near the multipurpose wharf. Taking three years to build and employing many locals, the construction of 'Edrom' as it was then known, was a boon to the Eden economy. Another local landmark that remains a symbol of Logan’s community

spirit is the Log Cabin located in Bass Street. When he became aware that his daughter's girl guide brigade were desperate for a meeting place, Logan bought land and sourced information from overseas on designs of Canadian log cabins. He created a scale model of the cabin, secured building permission from the Girl Guide movement and oversaw the building of the cabin which was opened in 1936. When John Ronaldson Logan passed away at Edrom Lodge in 1937, an Australian newspaper article described his death as the loss of a ‘true patriot’. J R Logan: Community and Nation commemorates the contribution of this visionary man who served his country both formally during the First World War, and voluntarily upon his return. The exhibition also reflects on his determination and fervour to build the community’s infrastructure, and expand the town’s opportunities through utilising its natural wealth. The exhibition is on show until 8th February 2015. More information is available at www.killerwhalemuseum.com.au

Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. In 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation at the Mount Gahan site. Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses. Pambula today has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops and pubs. It's a great place to shop for something a bit different. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park.

Pambula Beach has an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth is great for families. Heading south toward Eden, turn left off the Highway to Pambula Lake, where there’s several oyster growers selling fresh Pambula Lake oysters, including Broadwater Oysters.

Bega

www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au

Bega is the business and administrative heart of the Bega Valley. It is also a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and forests hugging the escarpment. In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker. Views of Mumbulla Mountain to the north and the escarpment to the west are best appreciated from the Lookout, located just 3 kilometres north of town on the Princes Highway. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products, exporting millions of dollars worth of product every year.

A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must...housed in a reproduction of one of the first buildings on the site, the Heritage Centre has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900s. It provides a fascinating insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products. The Heritage Centre is also home to the Bega Tourist Information Centre, which provides a wealth of information about attractions throughout the region. Bega has survived the downturn in retail relatively well, and has shops stocking everything from antiques, unusual clothing, books, whole foods, cafes, nursery and major retail outlets. Bega has a thriving arts community, with its own Regional Gallery that hosts major exhibitions throughout the year, as well as the artist-run Spiral Gallery.

Gifted - The Shirley Hannan Collection The Bega Valley Regional Gallery celebrates the Hannan family’s generous gift of the Shirley Hannan Collection to the people of the Bega Valley Shire. Following closely on the heels of the Shirley Hannan National Portrait Award 2014, this exhibition pays homage to the woman whose generosity of both spirit and patronage continues to enrich the arts in the Bega region.

Shirley Hannan was recognised in the Bega Valley Shire, where she lived for more than 25 years, as a gifted artist who had a particular love and talent for portraiture. Her work was extremely popular and she garnered a long string of awards to her name. She was a generous patron of the arts and funded the Shirley Hannan National Portrait Award. Tathra Wharf, Tathra Š Paul Callaghan

Cobargo & Tathra The picturesque historic village of Cobargo is located half an hour north of Bega, in the midst of lush, green pastures rolling away to forested mountains. The village was established with a Post Office, General Store, school, Hotel, church and blacksmith during the 1870s around the butter and cheese making industries. Cobargo is a creative, vibrant place reflecting the diversity and talents of those who live and work in the district. Cobargo combines the skills and craft of a working village with a genuinely historic past, its streetscape featuring

many turn of the century buildings. With galleries, cafes and established businesses like South Coast Leather and the unique Bangles Pottery shop, Cobargo is a great little village to spend some time wandering about in. Saturday mornings in particular see Cobargo come alive with the fantastic Laneway markets. Browse fresh produce, seedlings, herbs, local crafts, craft supplies and other locally made goodies. There's also trashy treasures and treasured trash for the bargain hunters and the odd busker. Every February the Cobargo Folk Festival takes over the showground, attracting international artists and local performers alike. Featuring much more than folk music, the Festival brings together musicians playing a diverse range of music for dedicated fans. Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples, with beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by. Tathra’s famous historic Wharf was built in 1862 from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company. The Wharf has been classified by the National Trust as

the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline. If you're at Tathra Beach you might see dolphins or even whales; they head south on their migration from September to November and can sometimes be seen from the beach. There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl and playground located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club. An easy 3km walking and cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well.

ENLIGHTENING BOOKS and CARDS that are awesome, HANDCRAFTED JEWELLERY and that SPECIAL THING! Gulaga Gallery and Bookstore is named after beautiful Gulaga Mountain which towers up behind Tilba. It was built at the end of the 19th Century from local eucalyptus timbers, and since 1991, this varied and enchanting shop has been owned by Shanti and Sol Ramana-Clarke. Sol has developed a unique style of jewellery using sterling silver and goldfilled wire to mount a huge variety of semi-precious stones. He might suggest you “pick a stone that jumps out at you” and watch him mount it into a pendant, ring ...or whatever... Sol also produced the widely acclaimed documentary film “The Hemp Solution - For A Sustainable Future”, so naturally you’ll find a full range of environmentally friendly hemp clothes, hemp seed oil and cosmetics. Shanti’s passion for colour and style is reflected in the varied range of women's clothing. Shanti and Sol’s love of

Central Tilba and Tilba Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, gold was discovered on the lower slopes of Gulaga in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by the National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. The village has become a centre for crafts people and artisans, as well as the famous Bates General Store and ABC Cheese Factory, located on Central Tilba’s main street. universal spirituality is expressed in their range of interesting and insightful books & DVD’s, cards, and inspirational music. In Gallery 1: In Gallery 1: to 20 August: 'Love & Desire: an exhibition of erotic art' - Eroticism has been a theme in the art of nearly every culture and age. At times controversial, subversive and confronting, it can also be a reflection on life, beauty and the meaning of existence. Erotic works can range from profoundly sophisticated to crudely comic and from sad to hilarious. They add a very human face to the cultures that produce them. Many historical erotic artworks served not only sexual but also religious, political, economic and social functions. Therefore our classification of much 'erotica' may take it out of context and endow it with unintended meaning. Despite our sophistication here in the twenty-first century, erotica is still somewhat taboo. It explores the complexities of the human condition and is a window into cultural values. This exhibition brings together the area's finest artists exploring love between human beings, our desires, dreams and sometimes secret fantasies. In Gallery 1: 22 August - 3 September: 'Vivid Lines' - solo exhibition by Max Hannan. From original acrylic on canvas to coloured prints in timber frames, 'Vivid Lines' brings the viewer a unique collection of urban artwork and cultural ideas, combining fusionistic line work, transforming shapes, and colourful cartoon characters. Wagonga Inlet, Narooma © Paul Callaghan

Narooma Narooma is one of the most scenic towns on the Far South Coast, sitting between the ocean and the startling blue-green waters of Wagonga Inlet. Tucked between the coastal ranges and the ocean, Narooma is the perfect place for a relaxed coastal holiday. The town manages to retain a 1950s fishing village vibe but modernised, with great shops, cafes and restaurants. It's a fantastic place for families, with a beach that's patrolled in summer, bike tracks and lots of waterways to explore or fish in. With a choice of flat stretches or hills, there are lots of places to walk around town and take in the spectacular views over the Inlet, the mountains and the ocean. Moruya River, Moruya © Paul Callaghan

Moruya Traditionally home to two indigenous tribes, the Walbanga and the BrinjaYuin, the name Moruya is derived from the word, mherroyah, meaning "home of the black swan". Black swans still feature in Moruya, frequently seen in the lakes and rivers around town. European settlement began in the 1820s, with the township gazetted in 1851. Moruya's granite quarries were famous for supplying the rock used in the piers of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. From 1925 to 1932, the Harbour Bridge works saw 250 stonemasons employed and relocated to Moruya by the contractor to produce 18,000 cubic metres of dimension stone for the bridge pylons, 173,000 blocks, and

200,000 yards of crushed stone that was used as aggregate for concrete. Moruya granite was also used for Sydney’s Post Office, the Bank of NSW, the Cenotaph in Martin Place and the base of the Captain Cook statue in Hyde Park. The first bridge across the Moruya River was erected in 1876, although frequent flooding meant new bridges had to be erected in 1900 and 1945 and, most recently, in 1966. World War 11 must have seemed a long way from Moruya to begin with, but as the war progressed, it had a direct impact on the town. The Moruya aerodrome became an advanced operational base, and in 1942 a trawler was attacked by the

To experience what the town was like during the boom, a visit to the Original Gold Rush Colony is a must. Located in a natural Australian bush setting on 4.5ha, the Original Gold Rsuh Colony, formerly known as Old Mogo Town, is a great place to step back in time. After taking out the award for Cultural and Heritage Tourism at the South Coast Regional Tourism Awards in 2008, 2009 and 2010, in 2011 the Original Gold Rush Colony won the Heritage and Cultural Tourism - Hall of Fame award. Mogo is now famous for its great range of specialty stores, housed in replica nineteenth century timber buildings. There are potteries, galleries, antique stores, bookshop and coffee shops, many of which specialise in unusual and interesting items. Mogo is the perfect place to spend time browsing for something a little bit different.

Also in Mogo is the internationally recognised Mogo Zoo. Providing world standard facilities for over 200 animals of more than 39 rare and exotic species, Mogo Zoo is committed to the survival of endangered species, including the rare white lions of ‘Timbavati’. Mogo Zoo won the Tourist Attraction category and the People's Choice Award at the 2012 South Coast Regional Tourism Awards. Congratulations to the Original Gold Rush Colony and Mogo Zoo on their recent awards - they certainly did Mogo proud.
