August It's August on the Far South Coast - the last month of winter and spring is in the air. After a chilly July where snow fell all along the ranges behind the coast, some warmer weather will be very welcome! Still, the tanks, dams and creeks are full and that's always a good thing heading into summer. Just because it's winter doesn't mean you need to stay indoors all day - it might be cold at night, but a good frost is nearly always followed by a beautiful clear, sunny day. The cooler day time temperatures are perfect for bushwalking or an invigorating stroll along the beach - much nicer than sweating it out in the middle of summer! If you're into cars, well, even if you're not, the South Coast Nationals in Moruya is a weekend long family friendly vehicle extravaganza with all sorts of cars, bikes, trucks - the list

goes on. Also featured is a trade and careers expo, a great opportunity for anyone interested in pursuing a career in the automotive industry to find out what's involved. See page 26 for more information. The Fireside Festival, one of the Canberra region's most popular winter events is on during August. Find out more on page 32. Our What's On feature on page 3 details more events happening this month on the coast. Have a great time this August whatever you do!

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century.

2

For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment.

from overseas on designs of Canadian log cabins. He created a scale model of the cabin, secured building permission from the Girl Guide movement and oversaw the building of the cabin which was opened in 1936. When John Ronaldson Logan passed away at Edrom Lodge in 1937, an Australian newspaper article described his death as the loss of a ‘true patriot’. J R Logan: Community and Nation commemorates the contribution of this visionary man who served his country both formally during the First World War, and voluntarily upon his return. The exhibition also reflects on his determination and fervour to build the community’s infrastructure, and expand the town’s opportunities through utilising its natural wealth. The exhibition is on show until 18th October - details at www.killerwhalemuseum.com.au

When you turn on a light switch in Eden, think of John Ronaldson Logan, the local entrepreneur who established the town’s first public electricity plant a century ago. By some he is also considered the father of the Snowy Hydro-Electric Scheme, so passionate was he about the scheme and its potential for Eden and the district, he expended a great deal of personal time and finances planning and campaigning the merits of the project. Eden Killer Whale Museum also stands as testimony to Logan’s contribution to Eden. He showed great foresight in having the skeleton of the killer whale known as Old Tom preserved, and in securing a permanent home for it, allowing visitors from around the world to continue to experience the retelling of Eden’s killer whales and whaling stories. Logan built the beautiful Edrom Lodge as his family's home on the shores of Twofold Bay, now a heritage listed property located near the multi-purpose wharf. Taking three years to build and employing many locals, the construction of 'Edrom' as it was then known, was a boon to the Eden economy. Another local landmark that remains a symbol of Logan’s community spirit is the Log Cabin located in Bass Street. When he became aware that his daughter's girl guide brigade were desperate for a meeting place, Logan bought land and sourced information

The north-western section of Deua National Park is a karst or limestone layer containing 400 million year old cave systems. The Big Hole and Marble Arch are two fascinating features which can be seen without going underground. Please note that permission is required to enter some caves. The walk starts from Berlang Camping Area, 45 minutes drive south of Braidwood along the Krawarree Road. After fording the knee-deep Shoalhaven River, an easy walk leads to a viewing platform from where the remarkable Big Hole, a chasm some 96 metres deep and 50 metres wide, can be safely viewed. The resident lyrebird may appear in the early morning or late afternoon when it comes out to feed. The track to Marble Arch continues from below the viewing platform. From the base of the hill the track is gently undulating until the very steep 150 metre descent into the Marble Arch. Wide bands of marble can be seen in the walls of the canyon and cavern roof and beautiful ferns cling to the lower sides of the canyon. Please note: The Shoalhaven River may become impassable after heavy rain. Do not enter the Marble Arch if Reedy Creek has risen or there are storms in the area.

This newly constructed walk connects Boyd’s Tower to Green Cape Lightstation, about 40km by road south of Eden. This magnificent coastal walk can be done over a couple of days or in easy half day sections. Spectacular ocean views, red rock platforms, long sandy beaches and a surprising array of different coastal landscapes, plant communities and animal habitats are found on this walk. Humpback whales and perhaps southern right whales may be seen on their southern migration during the spring months. A detailed walk brochure is available at the NPWS office in Merimbula. Pambula

www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au

The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage

of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. Pambula’s historic past is still very much in evidence, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses. Pambula now has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, retailers, pubs, a wine bar selling locally made wines and local produce, a bakery, deli, organic and bulk food shop and even an oldfashioned milkbar. At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a community-managed recreational area that is restoring parts

of the floodplain and former race course. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park. Pambula Beach has an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth, with a playground and barbecue.

Merimbula Lake, Merimbula Š Paul Callaghan

Merimbula Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafes, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St. has information and displays about the town’s early European history. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen.

Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme. For a musical night out, there are lots of venues in Merimbula that offer live music; especially during January as well as the annual Jazz Festival in June. Discover local history at Merimbula's Old School Museum One of Merimbula's best kept secrets is the wonderful Old School Museum. A wonderful facility for locals and visitors alike, the Museum is a great place to immerse yourself in local history. Originally built in 1873 as a school with attached residence, the building now houses an excellent collection of objects and photographs that tell stories of life in Merimbula and neighbouring Pambula from their origins to the present day. Stories of ship-wrecked sailors, whalers, squatters, settlers and gold miners are all to be found in the Museum. The current exhibition at the Museum is a display of the story of the survivors of the wreck of the Sydney Cove in 1797. The ship was wrecked on Preservation Island, off Tasmania, while on her way from Calcutta to Sydney with a cargo of various provisions. Seventeen of the survivors set off in a

long-boat intending to get to Sydney, but they too were shipwrecked near what is now Lakes Entrance. Their only hope was to walk the 600 kms along the coast to Sydney. Only three men made it to the cove at Wattamolla, where they were rescued by a fishing boat which took them the rest of the way to Sydney. The display incorporates the story of the Scouts' re-enactment of the journey in 1997. This was part of the Museum's National Trust Heritage Festival event. Other permanent displays of local history include stories of: • Matthew Munn and his Maizena and his son, Armstrong, who inherited his father’s wealth and lost it by investing in the Pambula goldfields; • the Wharf and the Illawarra Steam ship Company that provided transport for people and goods up and down the coast before roads were built;

• Syms Covington, who travelled with Charles Darwin in the Beagle and lived in Pambula in a house that is now a restaurant; • gold and pyrophyllite mining around Pambula; • the wrecking of the William Dawes and the SS Merimbula; • mutiny and murder on an American whaling ship, and many more. The Museum is situated in Main Street (opposite the RSL) and is open from 1.30pm – 4pm on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday (closed Christmas Day). Entry is only $3 and children are welcome at no cost. Cobargo Art Gallery © Paul Callaghan

Cobargo The picturesque historic village of Cobargo is located half an hour north of Bega, in the midst of lush, green pastures rolling away to forested mountains. In the 1860s, Cobargo was known as Wattletown, as bark stripped from local wattle trees was shipped to Sydney and Melbourne to be used in the tanning industry. This industry only ceased in 1964. During the 1870s Cobargo had its own Post Office, General Store, school, Hotel, church and blacksmith, all supporting the local butter and

A Butter Factory and Co-op were established in 1901 and continued production, except for a short break due to fire, until 1980, when it closed because of changes in bulk milk production. Today, Cobargo is a creative, vibrant place reflecting the diversity and talents of those who live and work in the district. Cobargo combines the skills and craft of a working village with a genuinely historic past, its streetscape featuring many turn of the century buildings. The two storey building that is home to “Bangles Gallery” is a fine example of century-old architecture, and features beautiful wrought iron lace work around the verandahs. With galleries, cafes and established businesses like South Coast Leather and the unique Bangles Pottery shop, Cobargo is a great little village to spend some time wandering about in. Saturday mornings in particular see Cobargo come alive with the fantastic Laneway markets. Browse fresh produce, seedlings, herbs, local crafts,

craft supplies and other locally made goodies. There's also trashy treasures and treasured trash for the bargain hunters and the odd busker. West of Cobargo is the spectacular Wadbilliga National Park that contains the Brogo Wilderness Area. This wild area is a refuge for native flora and fauna, and is a great place for walking.

Tilba Living History

Central Tilba and Tilba Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, gold was discovered on the lower slopes of Gulaga in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by the National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. The village has become a centre for crafts people and artisans, as well as the famous Bates General Store and ABC Cheese Factory, located on Central Tilba’s main street. ABC Cheese Factory The ABC Cheese Factory is located in the heart of historical Central Tilba and is the home of Cheese on the South Coast of NSW. The ABC Cheese Factory was established in 1891 and was the first Cheese Co-op in NSW. Today the ABC Cheese Factory is owned by local dairy farmers Erica and Nic Dibden who bottle their unhomogenised milk onsite and make cheese. Their milk and cheese can be purchased at the Factory or at many retail outlets across the South Coast of NSW. Come and watch cheese being made, milk being bottled or come and sample some of their delicious products. Cheese tastings are available at all times, as are tastings and sales of a large range of local South Coast honeys. As well as cheese and honey, the ABC Cheese Factory also features a wide range of jams and preserves,

local produce, regional guides and books, souvenirs, gifts, ice-cream and other refreshments – including freshly ground and brewed Ona Coffee. The ABC Cheese Factory is open every day from 9am to 5pm except Christmas Day and Boxing Day. ABC Cheese Factory, 37 Bate St Central Tilba. Ph (02) 4473 7387

Wagonga Inlet, Narooma Š Paul Callaghan

Narooma Narooma is one of the most scenic towns on the Far South Coast, sitting between the ocean and the startling blue-green waters of Wagonga Inlet, and it's also the perfect place for a relaxed coastal holiday. The town manages to retain a '1950s fishing village' vibe but modernised, with great shops, cafes and restaurants. It's a fantastic place for families, with a beach that's patrolled in summer, bike tracks and lots of waterways to explore or fish in. With a choice of flat stretches or hills, there are lots of places to walk around town and take in the spectacular views over the Inlet, the mountains and the ocean. Montague Island is located just offshore from Narooma and is a truly unique spot to visit. Twice voted as Tourism Australia’s top eco-tourism destination, you can take a National

Parks & Wildlife Service tour of the island covering its heritage-listed buildings, wildlife and history, or stay for a few nights in one of the Lighthouse Keeper's cottages. The island is home to the largest fur seal colony on the NSW coast, as well as being a breeding ground for 12,000 little penguins who come ashore at dusk after feeding at sea. Narooma is also renowned for its spectacular public golf course, ranked as one of the best in Australia. It's also a great place to go bike riding, with a tracks around town that are perfect for kids to practice. If you're a hard-core bike enthusiast, there are mountain bike tracks and sealed roads aplenty to check out. If you're looking for more leisurely pursuits, there are plenty of great cafes and restaurants to try, as well as shops to explore.

Moruya Rivermouth, Moruya © Paul Callaghan

Moruya Traditionally home to two indigenous tribes, the Walbanga and the BrinjaYuin, the name Moruya is derived from the word, mherroyah, meaning "home of the black swan". Black swans still feature in Moruya, frequently seen in the lakes and rivers around town. European settlement began in the 1820s, with the township gazetted in 1851. Moruya's granite quarries were famous for supplying the rock used in the piers of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. From 1925 to 1932, the Harbour Bridge works saw 250 stonemasons employed and relocated to Moruya

www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au by the contractor to produce 18,000 cubic metres of dimension stone for the bridge pylons, 173,000 blocks, and 200,000 yards of crushed stone that was used as aggregate for concrete. Moruya granite was also used for Sydney’s Post Office, the Bank of NSW, the Cenotaph in Martin Place and the base of the Captain Cook statue in Hyde Park. Today Moruya is a bustling country town that's a fabulous place to shop - there are lots of great shops with fantastic fashions, funky homewares and artistic creations. There are plenty of places to grab a coffee too.

Batemans Bay

www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au

Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820s, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income over the past 200 years. The Old Courthouse Museum has a wonderful collection of historical items and is well worth a visit. The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia. Now a thriving regional centre and major tourist destination, people come to Batemans Bay from all over Australia for its natural beauty. Situated on the banks of the magnificent Clyde River, water is deeply ingrained in the culture of ‘the Bay’. Swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, surfing and diving are all within easy reach of town. The Bay is famous for its Clyde River oysters, and there are plenty of cafes, restaurants, clubs and hotels offering local seafood on the menu.

The shopping is great too with the Village Centre and Bridge Plaza, plus an array of national brand outlets and local specialty stores. The Batemans Marine Park ensures that the coastal environment is protected for future generations. There are also several great national parks to explore within easy driving distance. Batemans Bay is a great destination for families, with its array of outdoor activities and attractions such as minigolf, a cinema, animal park, tennis and a carnival in summer. Hire a boat, kayak or a houseboat to explore the spectacular upper reaches of the Clyde River. Follow the coastline south to explore beautiful beaches to be found at Malua Bay, Rosedale and Broulee. Head north to Durras Lake for a spot of fishing, bushwalk in the Murramarang National Park or say hello to the kangaroos at Pebbly Beach.
