December Well, we've made it to December; another year gone at the speed of light and another one to look forward to. There's probably not much chance that 2012 will be slower; whoever suggested that life in the country was quiet didn't live on the Far South Coast! Most people will be focussed on getting ready for Christmas and the holiday season. Whether you're in Eden, Batemans Bay or in between, there are some fantastic shops in the region. Quirky, unusual, unique, arty, hand-made, old, new; you're bound to find just the right things to put under the Christmas tree when you shop locally. Bega Chamber of Commerce is holding its annual Bega on the Go promotion for Christmas; this year there's over $10,000 worth of prizes to be won in the Rudolf Christmas Giveaway. Details are on page 23.

Contents If you need a little something to distract you from the whirlwind that is December, try an exhibition opening or two. Our What's On feature on page 7 and Art Trail listings on pages 12 - 13 lists three to choose from. The Bay Theatre Players are doing their bit to keep everyone sane with The Victorian Music Hall show. Described as "A scintillating, salubrious soiree of amusement, merriment and mirth", the Music Hall sounds like the perfect antidote to too much stress. We hope you enjoy your time on the Far South Coast. May you be blessed with good company and good health - and we hope you have a happy and safe season.

whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. Following on from a highly successful Eden Whale Festival in 2011, the Festival will return on 4th & 5th November 2012 - don't miss it!

Australia’s first settler houses show the way for reducing our carbon footprint. Despite recent efforts to make our homes more environmentally friendly, Australians now use more water and land per person than most countries including China, Russia, India and the UK. By the mid 2030s it is estimated that worldwide we will be consuming the earth’s renewable resources at twice the rate that they can be regenerated. The Historic Houses Trust exhibition Built for the Bush: Green Architecture of Australia which has been touring regional New South Wales since November last year, looks at traditional rural architecture and how many of the energy efficient strategies and practices of early settler houses have re-appeared in contemporary sustainable architecture. A range of both traditional and contemporary houses are showcased in the

exhibition to illustrate the use of these low energy strategies, including an example from Merimbula. For Australia’s early rural settlers, building simple, efficient homes was a necessity due to their limited access to materials, skills and resources. Now in the 21st century, traditional 19th century practices are inspiring a new generation to return to these low-energy solutions and minimize the environmental impact of modern housing. The exhibition highlights the benefits of early settler ways that used earth and timber, natural materials that were close at hand and easily worked and corrugated iron. Simple house designs used light and air for their heating and cooling properties and water, the most essential resource for survival, was carefully captured and conserved. Built for the Bush is open from 17th September until 13th February 2012.

Pambula Lake © Paul Callaghan Caption for photograph © Photographer

Pambula The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. In 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation at the Mount Gahan site. Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic

buildings and farmhouses. Pambula today has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops and pubs. It's a great place to shop for something a bit different. At the southern end of the town is Panbula, a fantastic community conservation and heritage project that has transformed this part of Pambula over the past 10 years. Covering former farmland, areas of saltmarsh, billabongs and the former Pambula Racecourse, the area has been extensively re-planted and has great walking and cycling tracks. The old race track is a great spot for the kids to cycle around, with the centre of the track often inhabitated by kangaroos. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park.

Potoroo Palace is running a raffle with first prize the right to choose a name for the new koala, plus a weekend

Bega

www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au

Bega is the business and administrative heart of the Bega Valley. It is also a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and forests hugging the escarpment. Views of Mumbulla Mountain to the north and the escarpment to the west are best appreciated from the Lookout, located just 3 kilometres north of town on the Princes Highway. In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products, exporting millions of dollars worth of product every year.

A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for all visitors to the region. The Heritage Centre has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900s, and provides an insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products. The Heritage Centre is also home to the Bega Tourist Information Centre, which provides information about attractions throughout the region. Bega has seen its demographics change over the past 30 years, with many people moving from cities to enjoy the relaxed country lifestyle. Bega has a thriving arts community with its own Regional Gallery which hosts several major exhibitions each year, as well as the artist-run Spiral Gallery. The new Sapphire Marketplace complex opens this month, bringing

nationally recognised brands to Bega, as well as local business relocating to the new centre.

Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. Swimming at Tathra’s patrolled beach (summer only) may provide the added bonus of a dolphin sighting, and passing whales, heading south on their migration, are frequently seen from

www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au September to November. Bushwalking, kayaking, mountainbiking, snorkelling and surfing are all popular around Tathra. There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground, both located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club. An easy 3km walking & cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well. Direct access to the ocean is available

at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary. Tathra also has great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafés and restaurants.

Enjoy bushwalking in the Tathra Forest Wildlife Reserve From Tathra, head back toward Bega on the Snowy Mountains Highway, and turn right into Thompsons Drive. The car park on the right marks the start of the Tathra Forest Wildlife Reserve. This 60 hectare wildlife corridor provides habitat for a range of fauna species, including glossy black-

cockatoos, listed as a threatened species. These rare birds feed on the black sheoaks (Allocasuarina litoralis) found in coastal forests, and build nests in the hollows of old or dead trees. The Main Ridge Track passes through coastal rainforest down to a secluded wetland, with a variety of waterbirds,

Explore with Brogo Wilderness Canoes Early summer is a great time to explore the inland waterways of the Far South Coast - the days are fine, the water is warming up and large numbers of visitors are still to arrive. One of the best locations to go canoeing is the Brogo Dam, with its extensive catchment running back into the magnificent Brogo Wilderness area. The waterways are pristine, and the peaceful backwaters are a haven for local native bird life and fauna - sea eagles, swooping azure kingfishers, water dragons, goannas and shy echidnas have all been observed on and around the Dam.

To really explore the beauty of the Brogo Dam and Brogo Wilderness, hire a fully equipped canoe from Dave and Sue at Brogo Wilderness Canoes. Their canoes are safe, stable “Canadians, and all safety gear, maps and instructions are provided. For tranquillity and beauty it’s hard to beat - you can explore forest gullies, swim, bring a picnic lunch and stop wherever you desire. A 2 - 3 person canoe with all safety gear costs just $25 per person for a half day, with children half price. For bookings contact Dave or Sue on (02) 6492 7328.

The mouth of the Bega River makes a little port for the steamers of the Illawarra and South Coast Steam Navigation Company Ltd and coasters that trade in farm produce from the rich lands lying between the shore and the ranges, which rise in lines of faint blue some 20 miles inland, the

As a beautiful, secluded and healthy resort, with boating, surfing, fishing, oystering and shooting in abundance, Tathra is not excelled on the Australian coast, and the tourist and visitor should certainly include this delightful seaside spot in their itinerary.

Tilba

www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au

The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, the lower slopes of Gulaga became the site of much activity when gold was discovered in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. By the time mining ceased, the dairy industry was

firmly established as the main source of income for the area. The village of Tilba Tilba, just a few kilometres south of Central Tilba, is also protected by a National Heritage listing. Tilba Tilba is home to the magnificent Foxglove Spires, featuring one of Australia’s finest open gardens covering 3.5 acres. There is also a cafe, giftware, antiques and a nursery on site. Tilba Tilba also has a general store, and is the base for the walk up Gulaga.

The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by he National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. Central Tilba maintains its village atmosphere, and has become a centre for craftspeople and artisans, as well as ‘old-fashioned’ stores like the general store, lolly shop and toy shop. Shops with leatherwork, unusual clothing, cafes, antiques and giftware, as well as the pub, art studios, and the famous cheese factory are all located on Central Tilba’s main street.

Tilba Valley Wines is magnificently situated on the shores of Lake Corunna under the foothills of Gulaga (Mt Dromedary), just a few minutes drive from Central Tilba and about ten minutes from Narooma. The vineyard was established in 1978, with the winery opening in 1983. Some 700 cases of wine are produced annually from the vineyard's 4.5 hectares of vines, which include Chardonnay, Riesling, Semillon, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz varieties. Tilba Valley Wines are only available direct from the winery, either at the

cellar door or by post. The Restaurant at the Winery features fresh, high quality local produce, including vegetables, salad items, herbs, fruit and eggs from the vineyard garden. The menu often incorporates Tilba Valley wines in its dishes, like lamb, eggplant and shiraz pie. Wines can be tasted free of charge in the rustic timbered tasting room and are available for purchase from $22 per bottle. Tilba Valley Wines is open throughout the year (closed August) for wine tasting, cellar door sales, snacks and lunches.

M o n t h l y G a r d e n Ad v i c e Summer Duties Well, here we are again with another year nearly gone and the warmer and drier weather on the way. As we move into summer, I feel it is opportune to give a reminder of the things that require attention in our gardens to get our plants safely through the following warmer and drier months of the year. Because of the recent rains and warm conditions there will no doubt be a lot of pests and diseases out there that will reduce the vigour of our plants, and a

keen eye should be kept out for them. Aphids, thrips, scale and chewing insects will be in plague proportions and these small and sometimes unnoticed pests can do a lot of damage before being actually observed. A simple method of control is to do a preventative spray more so than a spray when they are noticed. The control method is totally up to you as what you use. There are systemic insecticides and there are natural controls. Generally with natural controls you will have to apply them

more regularly but with the systemic controls the plant takes up the spray and acts upon the pest when they “invade. For those of us who have a coastal or near-coastal garden, humidity over the summer brings with it fungal diseases that can ruin that beautiful rose or spoil our fruits. There are some very good combination insect and fungal sprays on the market. Again it is better to do preventative spraying than trying to control the pest when it is noticed. Pests like fruit fly can be controlled by using traps or lures. Most are available at your local nursery. Finally one of the most important summer jobs is mulching. Whether you mulch with soft mulches like lucerne and sugar cane, or harder mulches like wood or gravel this practice is probably the most important thing that you can do for your garden in the warmer months. Till next time, Happy Christmas and take care.

All Saints Anglican Church was commissioned by the Mort family in memory of Thomas Mort and his wife. Work began on the Church in 1880 and was completed in 1901. Clyde River, Batemans Bay © Paul Callaghan

Batemans Bay Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820s, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income over the past two hundred years. The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia. aNow a thriving regional centre and major tourist destination, people come to Batemans Bay from all over Australia for its natural beauty. Situated on the banks of the magnificent Clyde River, water is deeply ingrained in the culture of

‘the Bay’. Swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, surfing and diving are all within easy reach of town. The Batemans Marine Park ensures that the coastal environment is protected for future generations. Hire a boat, kayak or a houseboat to explore the spectacular upper reaches of the Clyde River. Batemans Bay is a great destination for families, with its array of outdoor activities and attractions such as minigolf, a cinema, animal park, tennis and a carnival in summer. There are lots of great national parks to explore within easy driving distance. Head west along the Kings Highway past historic Nelligen and up Clyde Mountain to see beautiful escarpment forests in the Budawang National Park. The beautiful township of Braidwood is also worth a visit.

Victorian Music Hall in Batemans Bay Yes! It’s Music Hall - in full Victorian splendour with revealing glimpses of ankle and saucy looks galore (and that’s just the men). Led by Bay Theatre Players' rollicking and rambunctious Chairman (oooh!), the Players present for your delight and edification (oooh!) mesmerising acts of mentalism, tragic monologues to break the heart, gorgeous girls to mend them, strong men to sigh over, comic acts to split your sides, sentimental ballads and Cockney classics to sing along with. A fun fund-raiser for this popular community theatre company, the

Victorian Music Hall promises to be a "Scintillating Salubrious Soiree" to start the silly season and on into 2012. Enjoy quality acts and some jokes perhaps first heard at your mother’s knee (and other low joints). There are only 5 shows (the acts are fully booked before the crowned heads of Europe as far as Moruya), so make sure to book tickets before they sell out. Shows are on December 2nd, 3rd, 4th (matinee), 9th and 10th. Tickets $15 from Bargain Box Fabrics, Orient Street, Batemans Bay. Phone 4472 5984 or go to www.baytheatreplayers.org.au.
