December Well, here we are in December, the last month of 2014. Where did that year go? Even my 16 year old daughter notices that the time seems to be going faster! If you want to slow down, you've come to the right place. The Far South Coast is the perfect place to chill out, whether it's spending time on the beach with a book, contemplating art or hanging out doing fun stuff with the family. It's a great location to recharge your batteries and re-connect. Before all the relaxing takes place, there's Christmas to get through. There's a myriad of specialty shops where you can find beautiful handmade gifts, artworks, artisan foods and vouchers for all sorts of experiences. Help support our local communities and do your Christmas shopping
locally! There are also numerous venues that do a great Christmas lunch if you don't want to spend the day cooking. Once Christmas is over, it's New Year's Eve, and for families, Merimbula's Chamber of Commerce puts on a great night of music and fireworks - see page 26 for details. Another great New Year's Eve event is the Broulee Annual Sand Modelling competition, held at North Broulee Beach. It's a great opportunity to give your inner sculptor free rein. You'll find details of the competition plus a heap of other events on our What's On feature on page 26. Make sure you set aside some time for relaxing during this busy time of year, and look after yourself.

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century.
2
For a real taste of life in the whaling industry, visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shorebased whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. Eden is now famous as the number one whale watching destination in Australia, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. Cat Balou Cruises have won numerous awards for their whale watching cruises.

from overseas on designs of Canadian log cabins. He created a scale model of the cabin, secured building permission from the Girl Guide movement and oversaw the building of the cabin which was opened in 1936. When John Ronaldson Logan passed away at Edrom Lodge in 1937, an Australian newspaper article described his death as the loss of a ‘true patriot’. J R Logan: Community and Nation commemorates the contribution of this visionary man who served his country both formally during the First World War, and voluntarily upon his return. The exhibition also reflects on his determination and fervour to build the community’s infrastructure, and expand the town’s opportunities through utilising its natural wealth. The exhibition is on show until 22nd February - details at www.killerwhalemuseum.com.au

When you turn on a light switch in Eden, think of John Ronaldson Logan, the local entrepreneur who established the town’s first public electricity plant a century ago. By some he is also considered the father of the Snowy Hydro-Electric Scheme, so passionate was he about the scheme and its potential for Eden and the district, he expended a great deal of personal time and finances planning and campaigning the merits of the project. Eden Killer Whale Museum also stands as testimony to Logan’s contribution to Eden. He showed great foresight in having the skeleton of the killer whale known as Old Tom preserved, and in securing a permanent home for it, allowing visitors from around the world to continue to experience the retelling of Eden’s killer whales and whaling stories. Logan built the beautiful Edrom Lodge as his family's home on the shores of Twofold Bay, now a heritage listed property located near the multi-purpose wharf. Taking three years to build and employing many locals, the construction of 'Edrom' as it was then known, was a boon to the Eden economy. Another local landmark that remains a symbol of Logan’s community spirit is the Log Cabin located in Bass Street. When he became aware that his daughter's girl guide brigade were desperate for a meeting place, Logan bought land and sourced information

Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. In 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation at the Mount Gahan site. Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses. Pambula today has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops and pubs. It's a great place to shop for something a bit different. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park.
Pambula Beach has an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth is great for families. Heading south toward Eden, turn left off the Highway to Pambula Lake, where there’s several oyster growers selling fresh Pambula Lake oysters, including Broadwater Oysters.

Merimbula Lake, Merimbula Š Paul Callaghan
Merimbula Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafes, great shopping, attractions and an array of accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St has information and displays about the town’s early European history. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen.

There are several venues in Merimbula that offer live music in many different styles, with everything from intimate shows to bands on national tours. Whales migrate past Merimbula from September to November each year, feeding and frolicking in the Bay, making it easy to whale watch from a boat, from a plane or from a headland.

Once again the Lakeview Hotel in Merimbula has made it into the Sydney Morning Herald's Good Pub Food Guide. Only two pubs on the entire South Coast made it onto the 2014 final list, with the Lakeview taking out a coveted Two Schooner award. Deciding on finalists involved visiting more than 500 pubs across New South Wales, with 400 reviews written and scores allocated. These scores became the basis for awarding either a one, two or three Schooner award. The Lakeview received its Two Schooner award after being judged on its food, service, ambience and feelgood vibe. With fantastic views over Merimbula Lake, the Hotel is perfect for enjoying a meal with friends and family. The Lakeview's restaurant is open daily for lunch and dinner, with counter meals also available in the Bar. The food is of a higher standard than your average pub meal, as reflected by its Two Schooner win. So for a meal as good as anything you'll find in Sydney or the regions, make a reservation at the Lakeview. Bega is the business and administrative heart of the Bega Valley. It is also a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and forests hugging the escarpment. In the language of local Aboriginal
people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker. Views of Mumbulla Mountain to the north and the escarpment to the west are best appreciated from the Lookout, located just 3 kilometres north of town on the Princes Highway. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products, exporting millions of dollars worth of product every year. A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must...housed in a reproduction of one of the first buildings on the site, the Heritage Centre has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900s. It provides a
fascinating insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products.

The village was established with a Post Office, General Store, school, Hotel, church and blacksmith during the 1870s around the butter and cheese making industries. historic past, its streetscape featuring many turn of the century buildings. With galleries, cafes and established businesses like South Coast Leather and the unique Bangles Pottery shop, Cobargo is a great little village to spend some time wandering about in. Saturday mornings in particular see Cobargo come alive with the fantastic Laneway markets. Browse fresh produce, seedlings, herbs, local crafts, craft supplies and other locally made goodies. There's also trashy treasures and treasured trash for the bargain hunters and the odd busker. Every February the Cobargo Folk Festival takes over the showground, attracting international artists and local performers alike. Featuring much more than folk music, the Festival brings together musicians playing a diverse range of music for dedicated fans. Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples, with beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by. Tathra’s famous historic Wharf was built in 1862 from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company. The Wharf has
been classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline. If you're at Tathra Beach you might see dolphins or even whales; they head south on their migration from September to November and can sometimes be seen from the beach. There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl and playground located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club. An easy 3km walking and cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka.

Tilba Living History
Central Tilba and Tilba Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga Mountain, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, gold was discovered on the lower slopes of Gulaga in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by the National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. The village has become a centre for crafts people and artisans, as well as the famous Bates General Store and ABC Cheese Factory, located on Central Tilba’s main street. and Tilba Leather is one of the reasons why Central Tilba is considered the Arts and Craft Centre of the South Coast. From belts, bridles, whips, saddle repairs and all manner of things leather, Tilba Leather stocks both new and exciting merchandise, as well as Phil’s creations, but the focus is definitely on Australian leatherwork. Tilba Leather also has a fantastic range of footware, with beautiful Naot and other brands of leather shoes, and quality ugg boots to keep you toasty warm in winter. Wagonga Inlet, Narooma © Paul Callaghan
Narooma Narooma is one of the most scenic towns on the Far South Coast, sitting between the ocean and the startling blue-green waters of Wagonga Inlet. Tucked between the coastal ranges and the ocean, Narooma is the perfect place for a relaxed coastal holiday. The town manages to retain a 1950s fishing village vibe but modernised, with great shops, cafes and restaurants. It's a fantastic place for families, with a beach that's patrolled in summer, bike tracks and lots of waterways to explore or fish in. With a choice of flat stretches or hills, there are lots of places to walk around town and take in the spectacular views over the Inlet, the mountains and the ocean Narooma has some easy cycling tracks, as well as being a great base for serious riders who are happy tackling rides 50km or longer.
www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au
Montague Island is located just offshore from Narooma and is a truly unique spot to visit. Twice voted as Tourism Australia’s top eco-tourism destination, you can take a tour of the island and learn about its heritagelisted buildings, wildlife and history, or stay for a few nights in one of the Lighthouse Keeper's cottages. Both Narooma Charters and Island Charters offer tours of this spectacular destination. Moruya Riverside Park, Moruya © Paul Callaghan
Moruya Traditionally home to two indigenous tribes, the Walbanga and the BrinjaYuin, the name Moruya is derived from the word, mherroyah, meaning "home of the black swan". Black swans still call Moruya home, and are frequently seen in the lakes and rivers around town. European settlement began in the 1820s, with the township gazetted in 1851. Moruya's granite quarries were famous for supplying high quality rock used in the piers of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. From 1925 to 1932, the Harbour Bridge works saw 250 stonemasons employed and relocated to Moruya by the contractor to produce 18,000 cubic metres of dimension stone for the bridge pylons, 173,000 blocks, and 200,000 yards of crushed stone that was used as aggregate for concrete. Moruya granite was also used for Sydney’s Post Office, the Bank of NSW, the Cenotaph in Martin Place and the

base of the Captain Cook statue in Hyde Park. The first bridge across the Moruya River was erected in 1876, although frequent flooding meant new bridges had to be erected in 1900 and 1945 and, most recently, in 1966. These days, Moruya is known for its beautifully preserved heritage buildings and streetscapes, as well as the large, intricately carved wooden poles that are dotted along the footpath of the main street. Moruya's Granite Town Festival celebrates the importance of the town's granite quarry to its development in the 1920s and 1930s. Featuring jazz, food and funk, the Granite Town festival has grown out of the Moruya Jazz Festival. An expanded program includes Riverlights, a floating lantern parade on the Moruya River, Eat Street food precinct and musicians
from Australia and overseas. After a highly successful launch this year, the Granite Town Festival will be back even bigger and better in 2015.

To experience what the town was like during the boom, a visit to the Original Gold Rush Colony is a must. Located in a natural Australian bush setting on 4.5ha, the Original Gold Rush Colony, formerly known as Old Mogo Town, is a great place to step back in time. After taking out the award for Cultural and Heritage Tourism at the South Coast Regional Tourism Awards in 2008, 2009 and 2010, in 2011 the Original Gold Rush Colony won the Heritage and Cultural Tourism - Hall of Fame award. Mogo is now famous for its great range of specialty stores, housed in replica nineteenth century timber buildings. There are potteries, galleries, antique stores, bookshop and coffee shops, many of which specialise in unusual and interesting items. Mogo is the perfect place to spend time browsing for something a little bit different.
Also in Mogo is the internationally recognised Mogo Zoo. Providing world standard facilities for over 200 animals of more than 39 rare and exotic species, Mogo Zoo is committed to the survival of endangered species, including the rare white lions of ‘Timbavati’. Mogo Zoo won the Tourist Attraction category and the People's Choice Award at the 2012 South Coast Regional Tourism Awards. Congratulations to the Original Gold Rush Colony and Mogo Zoo on their recent awards - they certainly did Mogo proud.

award-winning artists love nothing better than showing off - that’s what talented people do. Truly amazing works, landscape photography, seascape acrylics and wildlife ceramic mosaics. Many of these works are replicated on mugs, 2015 calenders, bookmarks etc. Kala is clairvoyant, but of course she knows that. Clyde River, Batemans Bay © Paul Callaghan
Batemans Bay Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820s, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income over the past 200 years. The Old Courthouse Museum has a wonderful collection of historical items and is well worth a visit. The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia. Now a thriving regional centre and major tourist destination, people come to Batemans Bay from all over Australia for its natural beauty. Situated on the banks of the magnificent Clyde River, water is deeply ingrained in the culture of ‘the Bay’. Swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, surfing and diving are all within easy reach of town. The Bay is famous for its Clyde River oysters, and there are plenty of cafes, restaurants, clubs and hotels offering local seafood on the menu.
www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au
The shopping is great too with the Village Centre and Bridge Plaza, plus an array of national brand outlets and local specialty stores. The Batemans Marine Park ensures that the coastal environment is protected for future generations. There are also several great national parks to explore within easy driving distance. Batemans Bay is a great destination for families, with its array of outdoor activities and attractions such as minigolf, a cinema, animal park, tennis and a carnival in summer. Hire a boat, kayak or a houseboat to explore the spectacular upper reaches of the Clyde River. Follow the coastline south to explore beautiful beaches to be found at Malua Bay, Rosedale and Broulee. Head north to Durras Lake for a spot of fishing, bushwalk in the Murramarang National Park or say hello to the kangaroos at Pebbly Beach.
